It’s hard to believe, but 2016 is all but over. In a few weeks, the Estate will empty out, the builders will take a break and Silver Lakes almost becomes a holiday resort in its own right. If you have not made plans for December, why not take a holiday in Silver Lakes? You can go on a game drive, take a hike through the reserve, go mountain biking in the Estate or on the multitude of cycle tracks around us, or sharpen up on your golf! Over the past two years in the December Intra Muros, I have written about water supply uncertainties that are facing us, and this year the situation has deteriorated even further with the Vaal Dam at its lowest levels in a generation, water restrictions being put in force and some suburbs in Pretoria having gone without water for a few days already. The HOA is working on contingency plans to at least have water available at certain points in the Estate where our boreholes are situated, but we cannot ensure an uninterrupted supply of piped water in the Estate. The onus is therefore on residents to make plans to minimise the effect of water disruptions, which unfortunately seem to be unavoidable. Water usage with the drought conditions we are currently facing are a major cause for concern and we will continue to urge all residents to comply with the municipal directives and restrictions that are communicated from time to time. The golf course obviously consumes large volumes of water, but I
would like to assure residents that we are managing and monitoring this usage closely and working responsibly with the boreholes and dams that supply the golf course with its water. We are proud of our Golf Environment Organization accreditation for sustainable golf course management, not because we are the first golf course in Africa to achieve this, but to remind ourselves that we need to be sensible with our water usage to maintain this accreditation. Ironically, we had some of the worst flooding in the Estate’s history on the 7th of November 2016, with Silver Lakes Drive flooded, a portion of our perimeter wall collapsing and the golf course essentially under water for a few hours. Thanks to quick reaction from our Security and Operations staff, the clean-up and repair took place swiftly, but the destructive effect of the floodwaters was frightening. I won’t forget Norman Riley’s comment as the driving range started disappearing under a brown mass of water, saying “The new irrigation system is working better than we thought!” On behalf of the Association, I lastly want to wish all our members, residents and staff a relaxing and enjoyable festive season. Safe travelling and we look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year. Regards Jan

ing new people and developing new content, ideas and designs. Silver Lakes is an incredible estate, one that has made me very proud to be part of. Our journey here has come to an end. Estates in Africa from 2017 will be taking over the publishing of the Intra Muros. We would like to thank all the contributors who on a monthly basis supplied interesting content. This played a huge role in developing a final product for residents to enjoy. We would also like to thank our front row supporters: Lance Evershed, Luanne Evershed, Johnny Romanos, Maria Marias, Silver Lakes Estate Agents and many resident friends. Your continual enthusiasm and support is what made the Intra Muros a long-term success. May your festive season be filled with happiness and laughter and may the New Year bring joy into your homes. Kind Regards Bianca Romanos

The building of the Clubhouse
KATHY O’CONNOR LIAISON MANAGER
The original Silver Lakes was developed on a 256-hectare farm owned by Dr Stefanus Lombard, a respected veterinarian. The title deed for the property described the farm as the remaining extent of portion 7 (a portion of portion 1) of the farm Zwartkoppies 364, Registration Division JR, Transvaal. The farm was originally owned by the family Lintveldt and later by the van der Merwe family. Dr Lombard bought the farm from the estate of the deceased EMR van der Merwe for the sum of R290 000 and transfer took place on 28 April 1976. Apparently, an old carriage road to Maputo (previously Delagoa Bay) ran through the farm. Remnants of a wagon and horse skeletons were found near the current 12th fairway. The farm was previously a dairy farm, but after Dr Lombard bought the property it was used as a cattle farm for the breeding of prized, pedigree Brahman cattle. In the late 1980’s Dr Lombard requested the town planning firm of van Wyk and Partners to submit an application to amend the zoning of the property from agricultural to residential. On 18 September 1989 approval for the rezoning was
THE BEGINNING of
Silver Lakes granted by the Minister of Constitutional Development and Planning, the Honourable Eugene Louw. Together with Mr Dirk Swart, a well-known estate agent and keen golfer, the idea of developing a residential golf estate on the property slowly became a reality. The property was offered to various developers at the time and also to the Pretoria Country Club. Anglo American Property Services (Pty) Ltd (Ampros) requested a right of first refusal on the property and on 10 May 1990 Amaprop Townships Limited bought the property from Dr Lombard. The name ‘Silver Lakes’ was not an easy choice and was decided upon after much debate. According to an article that appeared in the August 2001 Intra Muros, the ‘Silver’ refers to an old silver mine situated to the north of the Estate, near Mamelodi, while the ‘Lakes’ was derived from the pools formed by the river running through the estate. The Pretoria News of 28 September 1990 reported that “South Africa’s first professionally-managed golf course together with a resi-

dential estate of 1400 houses is to be developed east of Pretoria”. The marketing of the residential stands began in 1991, while construction of the first houses started in January 1992. Messrs Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes were appointed to design the golf course and were requested to take advantage of the natural environment and topography of the area. Mr Ernst de Jong was commissioned to create the Silver Lakes logo which is still in use today. The logo portrays the green landscape, the water, the golf flag and ball.
Pebble Beach Drive close to the Clubhouse
The construction of the Clubhouse began in June 1992. Pebble Beach Drive was officially opened by Mr Danie Hough, Administrator of the Transvaal in August 1992. It was mentioned at this opening by Mr Peter Gardiner from Ampros that “despite the fact that the golf estate idea was a relatively new concept in South Africa and that Silver Lakes was still in its development phase, the advantages of such a lifestyle was catching on fast, as nearly 200 stands had already been sold”. On 14 August 1992 the Silver Lakes Homeowners Association was formed and its first Chairman was Mr Jimmy Metcalfe.
Dr Stefanus Lombard
The official opening of the Clubhouse and Golf Course by Mr Clem Sunter took place on 10 July 1993. The first Manager of the Club was Mr Mike Passmore from Glendower Club, followed by Mr Martin de Beer. When Mr de Beer was appointed Manager of the Estate, Ampros appointed Club Corporation of America to manage the Club with Mr Mike Stevens as Manager. The first get-together of Silver Lakes residents and stand owners took place on 3 November 1993 at the Clubhouse. A light supper was served for the princely sum of R20 per person. Various events have been organised for residents over the years, from entertainment by Annabel Linder to a disco where males were dressed as females and vice versa, to a hobo evening and a social event called “Under the Sea.”
First house built in Armours Close
In 1999 Ampros withdrew from property development and sold the second phase of Silver Lakes to Messrs Rian Booysen and Erhardt Burger. This phase consisted of approximately 320 stands. In the same year, the Clubhouse and Golf Course were sold to Mr Piet Geyser who in 2005 sold the Clubhouse to Mr Nick Valakelis. In 2009 it was decided at an Annual General Meeting that the homeowners would buy both the Golf Course and Clubhouse to secure the future of these valuable assets. The total amount paid was R31 million. Silver Lakes was further expanded in 2001 with the incorporation of phase three (Willow Acres extensions 3 and 4) into the existing Silver Lakes. The developers were again Messrs Rian Booysen and Erhardt Burger. This addition of just over 77 hectares included a nature reserve and approximately 180 residential stands. The area also has several heritage sites which date back to the Late Iron Age.
Fountain at Lynnwood Gate and Gatehouse
The Hans Strijdom Gate was opened in May 2002 to serve the needs of a growing Estate and the Estate Administration Office moved from the Lynnwood Gate into its new premises at the Hans Strijdom Gate in 2005. A restaurant was added to the Club facilities and the Golf Course received an upgrade. Over the last 20 years, the Estate has grown and flourished. The Golf Course has become a favourite amongst golf lovers. An exciting new addition to the Country Club in recent years was the establishment of the Silver Lakes Golf Academy which boasts some of the most sophisticated golf training equipment in the country. The spectacular Clubhouse with its grand colonial architecture is still the focal point of the Estate. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy an early breakfast, sumptuous lunch or late afternoon sundowners and dinner in a relaxed, secure atmosphere. Silver Lakes Golf Estate will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2017. There is much to be thankful for and we look forward in anticipation to the next 25 years.

SILVER LAKES OUTFALL SEWER
That time of the year... We are nearing the end of the year and we are all very busy getting lots done before the festive season and – of course – the year-end holidays. 2016 was a fast year once again and there are so many things that have been accomplished/happened/will still have to be done. Herewith we wish all our learners at school, students studying at tertiary institutions end especially all our Matriculants of 2016 finalising their last year at school good luck. We trust you have been working (and studying) diligently and that you will be applying what you have learned as well as use effective study/exam techniques. Good luck with your assessments and exams. Everything of the best with your future studies and/or careers.
WATER RESTRICTIONS At the time of writing this article, all the water restrictions announced by the City of Tshwane were still applicable. We are all thankful for the rain we have received to date. Thank you to all our Intra Muros readers – Homeowners, Residents, Visitors, Directors, Management and Staff on our Estate – who have been co-operating and diligently complying with the water restrictions. Water is a scarce, life-dependant resource and we depend on each other to use it sparingly. Continue to be water-wise on our Estate. Please be aware: • The golf course uses water from our registered boreholes for irrigation operations. Storm water also enters our dams and waterways via the water reticulation infrastructures. Golf course staff pump borehole water into our dams and then irrigate the golf course from the dams with the irrigation system. No municipal water is used for these operations. All our boreholes are registered with the Department of Water Affairs. • There are some homeowners that use subterranean water from their properties as irrigation on their properties (e.g. where there is a high water table, pumped to keep the basement structures of their properties dry to prevent flooding). In these instances they do also not use municipal water.
The HOA received official notification regarding the intended Silver Lakes Outfall Sewer Phase 1 and 2. Our consulting engineer was appointed to act on our behalf from a technical perspective and our legal advisor was consulted. The HOA is registered as an interested and affected party and does not support the phase 2 proposal. Formal follow-up meetings were held at our Estate with our engineer, TLM (technical) officials and our Environment Director. Basic images were presented and perused. The concerns of the HOA as in previous official correspondence were reiterated - the serious impact (immediate & cumulative) of the proposal on the Estate as a whole (properties, golf course,

businesses ) and long-term effects. An alternative must be planned. TLM agreed to involve SLHOA in the process as requested. The HOA was also reassured that their current budget for that project (Phase 1) was also postponed by the Council. The matter is in hand and monitored by both the HOA and the engineer.

The HOA received notice regarding the widening of N4 highway for the new intersection just east of our Estate that has an effect on our property, namely the game reserve and the closest property. The HOA is registered as an affected and interested party. We have officially requested detail of how our property will be affected. Correspondence received has confirmed that detailed drawings, once completed by the engineering department, will be provided to the HOA. We are aware that 0,5 hectares of SLHOA property will be required for this road widening and we would like to assure you that this does not affect the minimum 50 hectares for our game reserve permits.

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS Since this will be my last article for 2016, I will touch a bit on the year as a whole. There were MANY positives as well as a few negatives‌. but I would like to emphatically say that the positives far outweigh the negatives! We had such a wonderful year, and yes, some projects stand over until next year, but a whole lot of them were finalised and we reported in Intra Muros about them. As you would well remember, the year started off with a February AGM which saw two portfolios in dispute for 2 months. Because of this we suffered some lost time in projects and uncertainty where the issues were going. Once the dispute was settled, we all tucked in and tried to make the best of the year ahead. We received revised electrical and water bills for the Estate which obviously had a big influence on our budgets for the year ahead‌. and then we had the flood! The flood, due to 100mm of rain in 1 hour, was definitely NOT a negative, but it did leave us with some budget restraints in fixing what was damaged. Luckily we did not have too serious damage and, as we always do, the HOA staff jumped in heels and all and made plans to make the Estate work seamlessly.

On this note, I HAVE to THANK ALL OUR STAFF at the HOA offices for all they do for us on the Estate! We REALLY appreciate all you do for us. Hennie and his team make us all safe and secure on the Estate, while Mike and Ollie and their team keep our Estate in working order. Eddie and his Garden Group team have also been working very hard to neaten our gardens to the standard we would like on the Estate. Kathy and ALL the staff at the HOA offices – thanks for a super well-run estate! ALL of us in Silver Lakes really appreciate it a lot!
the intrusive grasses. The process does not damage fish or birds and it really helps that our people do not have to wade in the water for hours and load the grasses onto our raft! We can use them in areas where they are much needed…such as the gabion and rock packing programs to prevent erosion.
A few other points to ponder: We were challenged on the legitimacy of our water license and so we wrote many reports and got an outside company to verify our legitimacy. We did this and got the confirmation of our legitimacy in October 2016.
Some of our work was held back because of this process, but we are slowly but surely getting back on track. One example is the lateness of our reed removal program – this will be definitely be tackled in April next year when the water is still nice and warm for the people working on this programme. The birds are also not breeding in April – so it will also be less of a disturbance to them. As you would have seen on our Facebook page and if you drove by the dam on the 5th on 7 November – also known as cloudburst day – we are using a very innovative mechanical way of taking out

the process, but a very necessary way. All these concrete balls and rocks are illegal according to municipal bylaws, but we as HOA are still given a hard time from homeowners regarding their concrete balls and rocks on the sidewalks. - We MUST REMEMBER – sidewalks are for each homeowner’s account to keep neat and tidy, BUT they are COMMUNAL areas and we cannot prevent other homeowners from using them for walking OR even parking in case of overflow from their private properties, e.g. for parties, but obviously not by home-businesses – they need to have their own parking INSIDE their properties. - Unifying the Estate design through tidy and ‘clean’ streetscapes. - Finishing the street corners and the signage walls on the golf course tee boxes. These will both add to this feeling of unity on the Estate. - A programme of contacting homeowners to either tidy up or have some help with caring for their sidewalks on the Estate. - We will start a programme of replacing all palisade fencing with ClearVu. - Street trees will be planted on the corners where lawns were replanted in 2015. - But mostly, we will do our utmost to keep our gardens uniform in design and neat and tidy. This was just a bit of what will be happening in 2017….enjoy! The long and the short of this year is that we have had a wonderful year as an environmental team. We still have much to do with outstanding gardens to be tidied up, gabions to be installed, so many tasks I cannot list them all.
Some photos taken on the Estate when we had the cloudburst made the national news with 100mm of rain in 1 hour! Other programmes still on track for 2016 will be to finish the corners and gardens of Pebble Beach Drive before Christmas 2016. In 2017 we will be back with new enthusiasm and start with the corners on the other street corners of Silver Lakes. As I mentioned in my article of last month, my main focus in 2017 will be to try and create more pleasing streetscapes for our Estate. Not only does it create a calm and tidy Estate, but it ALSO adds to the salability of our homes. It actually adds a percentage to your selling price if you have a pleasing streetscape (Intra Muros October 2016)! We will aim for this by: - Getting rid of the ‘hard elements’ on the sidewalks. We have had Tshwane on site and they have issued notices of removal before fines in the past month. To me, this is a very negative way of handling
We just want to ensure ALL homeowners of our hard work and dedication to the Estate – we are here to serve and to make our Estate beautiful. On this note, I want to reiterate that we are NOT here for our self-interest but for the estate, for the homeowners. As you all well know, Jan – our CEO – and Kathy’s doors are always open to you all. Those of our team who stay behind will take good care of your properties. Have a wonderful time and drive safely – see you all in 2017! Enjoy your summer holidays!

Floods in Silver Lakes Some interesting facts about the weather patterns which brought on the flood on Monday 7 November 2016……the photographs speak for themselves – we were all affected in some way or another. Not being able to get in or out of the estate, properties under water and most definitely the flooded golf course! The golf course, as we all know, is actually situated mostly in a river bed. Therefore, since it is wide and has enough ‘space’, we are mostly safe from flooding – unless of course the property is close to or below the 1:100 year flood line.
According to statistics, Pretoria normally receives about 573mm of rain per year, with most rainfall occurring during summer. Our lowest rainfall (0mm) obviously being during the winter months, particularly June, and the highest (110mm) in January. So, with the 100 mm we received in the 1 hour of the downpour, we received more rain than we usually receive over a 31-day period! In one hour!
We have all been hearing about La Nina…the opposite of the drought (El Nino) were having just a month or so back... and now …wetter weather.
From Wikipedia the following : La Niña is a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon that is the counterpart of El Niño as part of the broader El Niño–Southern Oscillation climate pattern. This means the temperatures of the ocean and the temperatures and therefore movement of the atmosphere above the continents and oceans plays a big part in these changes in our ‘normal’ weather systems. The name La Niña originates from Spanish, meaning “the girl”, analogous to El Niño meaning “the boy”.
During a period of La Niña, the sea surface temperature will be lower than normal by 3 to 5 °C. This has to happen for at least three months to classify as La Niña conditions. It has extensive effects on the weather such as the wet weather that has been coming in from the equator – in comparison to our normal weather patterns where our rainfall is mostly a result of the flow of the weather systems along the south coast of Africa.

Most local and international forecasting systems are indicating that South Africa’s summer rainfall areas can expect wetter conditions during the early and mid-summer periods of 2016/17. The expected warmer conditions from the previous forecast have also subsided somewhat, which may be further evidence of wetter conditions in the seasons mentioned above. Uncertainty of these forecasts remains since la Nina has not yet strongly manifested, and this casts doubt on the accuracy of the forecasting systems.
So, for the time being…it seems we are in for some wet weather…but maybe not as much as we need to break the severe drought we have had the past season. Time will tell.
Enjoy the holidays and have a wonderful festive Season. Corlia Mathews

on the
Social side We have had our very popular trick-or-treat through the streets of Silver Lakes. Note to all – we apologise to ALL HOME-OWNERS who turned up at the Club and there was no food for supper available! Due to a misunderstanding the staff at the Club packed up earlier than expected. This was a year of learning for us all with Café41 taking over the food services at the Club – we all learned many new lessons during the year….but one thing is for certain – Minas and Helen know about food. The food at the Club is delicious!! Thank you for a great restaurant and restaurant service. We will all DEFINITELY pull together and have a more streamlined set of homeowner events next year. We are already planning all our Social Events for 2017. Have a look in on pg 6 for all you can look forward to. A new event will be our very own SILVER LAKES CHARITY DAY in May 2017. Come and join us and not only support the day, but also the charities we will be supporting through the funds raised at this charity day. You will see from the items up for auction for our charities that many will be game-related items (weekends away and leopard experiences) brokered for us by our own game warden, Dr. Douw Grobler. We would like to thank him in advance for all his efforts. We have to ensure all that the charities we will be supporting are NOT ONLY game related! - We will be supporting a worthy student, we will be supporting a programme at TUT (Technical University of Tshwane) - Together with the above student a program of cameras in urban veldt to investigate the influence of fences on game and night life; - A research programme in leopard care in populated areas. Our other charities we will support that are very close to our hearts - A programme supporting child cancer patients, - A children’s home in Bronkhorstspruit; - A hospital food programme. Enjoy our 2016 Christmas Carol and Lights Evening on Saturday the 26th of November, as well as a sumptuous Christmas Lunch at the restaurant at the Club. Lastly, but not least as the saying goes…THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all our homeowners who support our events!! We had a wonderful year. Have fun over the holiday season and come back safely.

THE BIRD CLUB
The Bird Club’s talk by Mark Anderson, CEO of Bird Life South Africa, in October was not only super informative, but we are also pledging our help at the Pretoria Zoo with a BirdLife Africa project on the flufftail project. Mark mentioned that Africa was the ONLY continent that has not lost ANY birds to extinction. Therefore, we will support the flufftail project at the Pretoria Zoo. Some detail from the white-winged flufftail conservation website : The White-winged Flufftail is an endemic resident to Africa and is only known to occur in high altitude wetlands of South Africa and Ethiopia. There are isolated records from Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is speculated that the bird migrates between these two countries, arriving at suitable habitat within South Africa in summer. However, this has not been proved. Ten years ago the South African population was estimated at 235 nonbreeding individuals occurring in ten sites ranging from 50–1,000 ha in areas and at altitudes of 1,300 – 1,870 m in the east of the country. The only known breeding population, estimated at 201+ pairs, is found at three sites in highland marshes in the central highlands of Ethiopia near Addis Ababa. More recent estimates show that there is a mere 50 birds left in South Africa and less than 250 globally.
Pelecanus rufescens
A breeding facility will be constructed with input from Mr Colin Wintle, the current world expert on the captive keeping of crakes, rails and flufftails. Mr Wintle, who now lives in the UK, successfully kept these species in Zimbabwe. A handful (< 10) of Red-chested Flufftails (a closely related species with similar habitat requirements to White-winged Flufftails) will be obtained in South Africa under the necessary permits and with the private landowners’ permission. The Red-chested Flufftails will be kept at the facility at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria and will be used to master the flufftail’s needs in captivity and serve as an attraction to raise the profile of the flufftail and wetland conservation. Only once the keeping of Red-chested Flufftails is mastered will Whitewinged Flufftail be introduced to the facility. Research will be undertaken in collaboration with Prof. Andrew McKechnie at the University of Pretoria in order to study the call, behaviour and habitat requirements of the species. Mark D. THE COOK ON THE CORNER THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY! It’s in the air. Can you smell it? It’s high summertime and the impending journeys of families across the country are so close that we can almost smell the fresh ocean air. I love the excitement of December; the longing for holiday is palpable and you can see the relief on people’s faces the closer and closer we get to the 16th of December, which usually signals the start of the holidays for most South Africans. The summer holidays are my favourite time in South Africa. Not only is the sun out, but we also get beautiful summer rainstorms up in Gauteng, and all the plants and flowers seem to be in full bloom. We have the most gorgeous fruits and vegetables in our stores at this time, with so many options of what to make or incorporate into our day. My favourites will always be litchis, mangoes and watermelons, which I swear I eat more of than I should. I grew up in the northern parts of the North West province, and being so close to the Botswana border it had us melting in the heat of the December weather. The days can easily reach between 38-44 every single day, meaning that we ended up lounging around in the pool for most of the day and snacking on anything that was cold or frozen. I still cut slithers out of mangoes and watermelons and freeze these, eating them as cool-me-down snacks.

Our family is quite big on Christmas – we have a different family member in charge of all the menu planning and organising every year although we all chip in with requested dishes or as helping hands when the time comes. We usually do a Christmas lunch under the trees in the garden, but sometimes we’ve experimented with some more unconventional ideas like brunch or even doing a gluten-, dair y- and sugar-free one once. Needless to say, the latter was neither my idea nor pleasant. There’s just something about a celebration event – the food needs to be beautiful and moreish. It needs to be a little over-the-top and slightly gluttonous. Don’t get me wrong, it is certainly not practical or healthy to eat like that every day or every week, but I do feel like we need to do at least one of these kinds of meals a year. It’s almost like its good for your soul.

Just because you perhaps don’t celebrate Christmas, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t host an event like this. We have a little holiday house in the middle of nowhere at a natural spring at which we spend most of our New Year holidays. Ever y single year, without fail, one of our neighbours has the entire family over for a lengthy New Year’s Day luncheon. They sit under the trees, chatting and laughing with family members spread over 4 generations. They always look so happy and I’ve always thought these kinds of events are so special – they build memories. Who knows how long we have to live? May we spend this festive season being jolly, free and happy. Regardless of whether you had a tough year or a really great year, may you find something to celebrate and may you ring in the new year with the hope that 2017 will be a bunch better than 2016. And may it be so…

Changing destructive communication in marriage DR. ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY
Communication is, of course, important in marriage. But communication includes every message: every feeling, every desire, every thought that is conveyed to the other person. Some communication can be helpful, but sometimes it is destructive. The most useful knowledge is knowing how to avoid the unhappy, harmful interactions. Seeing how happy and unhappy couples communicate differently might help. A stereotype of a happy marriage is a couple who like each other, understand each other well, and settle disputes easily. Yet, some stable marriages do not fit this stereotype: some are volatile (fighting openly but making up passionately) and others carefully avoid conflicts, i.e. they don’t “work things out” but agree to disagree. Apparently, happy couples have developed various ways of handling the inevitable conflicts; unhappy couples haven’t. Unhappy couples first criticize the partner’s behaviour, but that gradually evolves into attacking his/her personality, which eventually degenerates into expressing abusive contempt. Naturally, the attacked partner becomes defensive, perhaps by saying “it’s not my fault”, by feeling indignant and counter-attacking, or by completely withdrawing emotionally (stonewalling). Both the attacks, usually by women, and the defensive refusal to deal with the issues, usually by men, are big parts of the problem. Men, in unhappy marriages especially, do not listen to the verbal messages nor pick up on their wives’ non-verbal messages. Unhappy couples frequently just exchange hostile accusations (“You don’t care about me, only about yourself”) whereas happy couples may argue, even yell, but would then explore the topic more (“Are you really as unconcerned with this problem as you look?”), ending up resolving the difficulty. It has been found that in most marriages the wife is the one who tries to maintain the relationship. So when she is unhappy she complains and gets emotional. Men don’t like negative emotions, so they try to downplay the emotions and rationally solve the problem... or men withdraw. His withdrawal makes the wife even madder. Sometimes she will suggest a truce or some solution, but often in the heat of battle both go on “emotional overload”, feeling contempt for each other. The couple gradually comes to think of and remember their
marriage negatively. The failing relationship typically dies a slow death when the male shows little understanding, gets irate, and starts hard-core blaming (“You’re full of hate” or “You’re so stupid”), which makes it hard for the wife to give in or compromise. Finally, she grows bitter too and the marriage fails. Fortunately, if caught soon enough, the warring couple can learn to increase the positive feelings and actions and decrease the negative. The main task is not to solve (or stop) every argument but to stop the escalating bitterness. Coping with communication differences and hostile attributions (views of the partner). In general, women are more socially sensitive than men. They are better listeners, more empathic in some ways, and give more comforting (warm, caring) responses. However, some evidence indicates that married men, when interacting with their wives, do more “good communicating” than married women, including showing concern for the wife’s feelings, reassuring their wives, seeking forgiveness, suggesting compromises, and remaining calm and problem-oriented when arguing. Actually, both sexes need to be good at detecting nonverbal cues. Early in a romantic relationship, the ability of women to read a male’s nonverbal cues seems to be important in building intimacy. Later, during periods of conflict, the woman’s nonverbal skills and control of the male seem to be critical in avoiding destructive fights. On the negative side, women show stronger negative emotions during a conflict. They are more demanding, using threats, “guilt trips” and personal attacks to persuade. They send more double messages: smile and say, “You’re terrible!” It has been suggested that women more often reject their husbands’ attempts at reconciliation. Often the dissatisfied spouses in troubled marriages (both men and women) attack, threaten, and walk out during fights, but the difference is that women are more open to making up, accepting the husband’s plans, showing concern, and appealing to fairness. There seems to be a difference of opinion about which sex makes up first. I suspect “making up” is a function of how angry the person is, the seriousness of the issue, general satisfaction with the marriage, etc., more than a gender difference.

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS
There is some general agreement among women about men, however. Their major complaint is that men can be noncommunicative and lack emotional responsiveness. Men avoid interactions when dissatisfaction is or may be expressed. This could be male’s way of avoiding uncontrolled anger. In a very general sense and in milder disagreements, the sexes seem to be at odds: women give more emotional responses and want an emotional response back. Men give more informational, unemotional responses and want practical, constructive, rational responses in return. Neither response is bad, so if both sexes could learn to give both kinds of responses, we might be on the right track to improving understanding and relations between the sexes. Changing our communication habits require awareness and practice Partners must learn to recognize their negative communications. Often we don’t even know we are being nasty and hurtful. Also, some couples disagree so often that they just come to expect almost every interaction to become a disagreement; therefore, they hardly listen to the other person’s opinions and start attacking right away. If your discussions almost always end in unresolved, irritating disagreements, then why talk except to vent some of the resentment that is festering? Obviously, such couples must learn to talk differently. First, since negative communication may have become an unconscious habit, we have to be confronted with our comments and gestures that spill out negativity. One way is to audio or videotape one of your arguments and then review it together. Carefully observe every statement and movement, stopping the tape frequently and discussing openly the critical, hurtful, counter-attacking comments and looks. Another way is to have only one person talk at a time and have the listener give immediate feedback to the talker about how they (the listener) are feeling about each comment. Do this by using +, -, and 0 signs, meaning “that is positive and makes me feel good,” “that is negative and upsets me,” and “that is neutral and I feel okay.” This feedback is an interesting, often eye-opening experience. Second, both partners must study and practise “I” statements and good listening with empathy responding. It is helpful to have some discussions using these rules: each partner must carefully listen and accurately give empathic feedback to the person who has just spoken before he/she can express an opinion or reaction to what was said. This forces each person to hear what the partner is really saying and feeling... and it prevents the machine-gun like exchange of angry, critical comments. (Also, look for the attacked person’s denial of responsibility responses and his/her avoidant, stonewalling reactions.) Third, each partner needs to attend to his/her physiological reactions that signal being upset, mad or hurt. It isn’t easy to do, but it is
important to be able to stop a destructive, out-of-control exchange. So, when either partner gets beyond the point of being civil and rational, you must learn to ask for a “time-out”, taking some time to calm down. Don’t just drop the discussion, however. Be sure to agree on continuing the discussion when you have had time to think about it more reasonably and less hostilely. A long string of negative comments can override hours of ordinary conversation. Your feelings need to be communicated, but not in a brutal, uncaring manner, which happens when we get really mad. Lastly, during a calm moment, it is very important that both partners realize (and maybe tell each other so) the secret, unexpressed feelings that often underlie the anger and criticism. What feelings are these? Frequently, feeling unloved, rejected, hurt or neglected gives rise to the cutting criticism and nagging comments. In other words, what we really want is more love, tenderness and attention, but when those needs are frustrated, we respond with critical, hurtful comments and outrage about all kinds of petty annoyances.. If the criticized partner can see the underlying reasons for the hurts and anger, the entire interaction can change. The hurtful comments are disarmed. If a couple can become understanding, get closer and show they care, the marriage can be turned around. When the ongoing talk between two people is laden with criticism, subtle demands, expressions of annoyance or signs of rejection, therapy aims to teach partners to be more “accepting”. Too often when we are unhappy with someone, we want them to change... and when he/she doesn’t change, our frustration starts to dominate our view of the relationship. Instead of letting the situation escalate, building more anger, therapists ask the couple to consider a different alternative, namely, to learn to tolerate or accept the faults of the partner and their disappointment in the relationship, realizing (if it is true) that the partner’s trait that bugs the hell out of you is, in fact, a minor factor relative to the good aspects of the marriage. In short, keep in mind that perfect relationships do not exist, so some weaknesses, faults, self-centeredness, disturbing attitudes or beliefs, or whatever, will just have to be accepted in any relationship. If both can learn to accept the other, warts and all, the two people are well on their way to rebuilding a satisfying relationship. Of course, if the partner’s negative behaviour or attribute is unchangeable, as shown by unsuccessful marital counselling, and too serious to be accepted, then the relationship may be over. In summary - there are many communication skills that can help a strained relationship. We can learn to listen better and be more assertive instead of hostile; we can improve our social skills by role playing and learning to use “I” statements and empathy responses; we can check out our hunches, fight fairly, and negotiate compromises; we can reduce our anger. There are many books specifically written for improving couples’ communication. Marriage counselling is another excellent way to learn how to communicate more effectively.

Sensory Gardening Article by Elize Malan
By choosing plants that appeal to all our senses, tranquillity and joy in a garden is enhanced.
SIGHT Brightly coloured plants appeal to all people, no matter what season we are having. Due to our habit of not gardening seriously in winter, we often end up with a garden producing beautiful spring flowers and very little plants with colour during the remainder of the year.
Herbs Shrubs Annuals Melissa Michelia figo Carnation Bergamot Choisya Narcissus
Winter to spring flowering: Trees/shrubs Perrenials Makaya bella Azalea Barleria Mayflower Coral tree Zantedeschia
Annuals Allysum Petunia Candytuft

Summer to Autumn flowering: Bougainvillea Agapanthus Tecomaria Roses Peltophorum africanum Gaura

TOUCH Texture or feel of plants are important. Beds on either side of pathways are easy to touch and are especially important for small children. Fluffy grasses, fleshy Echevaria, papery Statice, silk-like Lilies and downy groundcovers like Lamb’s-ear should be considered.
SMELL Some plants release their scent into the air. Others need to be touched or bruised first. These scents can be relaxing, invigorating or even stimulate the appetite. Herbs Shrubs Annuals Basil Rosemary Sweetpea Mint Scented roses Stocks Thyme Gardenia Iris Lavender Lemon Verbena Violet
Fruit, herbs and vegetables can successfully be planted between shrubs and perennials. Avoid spraying the edible garden with chemicals. Strolling in the garden early morning or evening can provide a healthy snack for family members. Fruit trees Vegetables Herbs Lemon Cabbage Parsley Orange Lettuce Thyme Apple Radish Sorrel Figs Strawberries Lemon grass
SOUND Do you ever listen to your garden? Poplar trees moving in the wind have music of their own. Plants utilized by birds will add the joy of birdsong. Wind chimes are made from a variety of materials. The sound from bamboo chimes will provide a Zen feeling. The tinkering of glass or metal wind chimes gives a completely different mood to the surrounding area. Never underestimate the value of a water feature bubbling somewhere in the background.
