Collin Strabala

“I knew the name right away, I could picture his face. Which means he stood out in a positive way. He was nice hard working man.” Mrs. Burger, Math In 9th grade as a student Collin was quiet and caring. He wasn’t the kind of kid that stands out in a flashy way. But he was always a plessure to have in class. And I will miss seeing him in the community.” Mrs.McGrane Foundations of Science

“How he always had the greatest sense of humor and really the nicest guy.” Caleb Crosset ‘17

“He was a polite, kind and quiet kid, but when you had a conversation with him, he was very knowledgeable. You kinda had had to pull it out of him to get him going. He was a normal high school students. He might not have stood out because he was shy, but his work stood out.” Mr.Gast, Business and Futures

“He is someone who, if you were close to or not, impacted your life. He is someone who will always be in our mind. He is forever and always there.” Kaylub Ripperton ‘17

Collin was born on February 5, 1995 and died May 7, 2015. He graduated West High in 2013. He worked at Fareway in North Liberty. His favorite thing was to be outside; fishing, hunting, golfing. He also loved his family and the fun times with them. “Sometimes in life, you find a special friend. Someone who changes your life just by being a part of it. Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is forever a friendship.” -Unknown. With anyone who knew him, knew that he was an amazing friend!

Tyler Herring Saturday nights after work is what Tyler Herring ‘15 is going to really miss, a after work with Mya Wallace ‘16 Jared Kiebel ’16 and sometimes Emma Abels ’15 would go to Pancheros, or Ihop. Also maybe go to Tylers house and just chill until midnight. Lately they have been doing bonfires at the Zierke’s household. “I love Saturday nights because we don’t have school the next day and we can just be out until whenever,” said Herring. Work! Work! Work for summer! But also enjoy life and spend time with friends and family before he starts the next chapter in his life. He is planning on balancing it out social and work life. With him having senior and Junior friends, there isn’t really a toll.

Tyler Herring ‘15

“The seniors, we are in the same boat like we are leaving next year and so many things are happening for us as compared to the Juniors.” says Herring. Tyler created a group of companions, with an unbreakable bond. “And once he leaves the bond will still be strong.” Mya Wallace ‘16 What is going to happen when he leaves.’’ They people are going to be distances but the friendship is still going to be there.” With Tyler and Megan which is her sister being so close, he will come visit often. “I’m sad, but i’m also happy im getting his rom and possibly his car. But i feel like there is going to be a missing part of me. Tyler is like my other half.” says Megan Herring ‘18

Elise Femino “Swimming. It’s the only thing I do. I practice six to seven times times a week, with two to three hour practices.” said Elise Femino, ‘18. Swimming is a part of who Femino is, with the sport helping her realize that discipline is key, whether it be in or out of the of the pool. With swimming taking up most of her time, it can be hard to balance both swimming on IFLY and school, but she has learned to balance both. “School always comes first, even if it can be hard at times to balance both swimming and school.” said Femino. Femino started swimming unexpectedly, when her mother told her that she wanted her to try swimming when she was 9, nearly 10. Before swimming, Femino had done a number of sports, but she really hadn’t enjoyed them. Femino said yes to her mother, but she didn’t think that she would be able to stick with it due to past experiences, but she ended up getting hooked with the sport. Swimming is difficult, especially when you’re devoting so much time and effort to it, but for Femino, all that hard work and effort is worth it in the end. “When you get the time you wanted and accomplished your goals, it’s just the best feeling in the world.” said Femino. To accomplish her goals, she claims that the key attributes to be a good swimmer is hard work, swimming as much as you can and getting better, the determination to get better, the motivation to get better, and the will to do what you need to do to become a better swimmer and athlete. “ (Swimming) is like being part of an awesome community of people and an amazing sport to be apart of.” said Femino. Caleb Crossett Graze it would be a pub, bar place. Caleb Crossett has been dreaming about owning his own restaurant, and being a chef. Right now he is a sophomore with school he also works three jobs. On Tuesday he works at Fareway from around 5-10 PM. (quote from manager) Then a couple nights other than Tuesday he works at the Brown Deer Golf Course restaurant or the Marriott. He is getting up to his dreams one step at a time. “He is good worker, he is studious and ambitious young man that is destined for success.” Says Senor Mcnair, Spanish 2 and 2H teacher . He has known Caleb for a while, because of Caleb’s uncle. As summer starts to come he will only work three or four days a week, so he can have time to spend with friends and family! But school isn’t over yet, his grades have slipped but he has to stay up pretty late to get homework done. “Caleb is a good friend, never lets you down. He is very hard working. He focus on school but yet cracks jokes all the time. He is fun to be around and it’s hard not to smile when he is there. And he is very cute!” Says Kaylub Ripperton ‘17

Caramel Cupcake with whipped frosting and caramel glaze Rate: 7 out of 10 “Wasn’t very moist, the whipped frosting took over the flavor of the cupcake.”

Is going to school during bikini season really a good idea? by Sierra Frost

frostsr3710@gmail.com

The biggest misconception, one that I had when going to a year round school, is that there are more school says in the school year, which actually isn’t true. Most students in year-round school are in class about the same number of days as students on a traditional school calendar. Year-round schools have trouble with coordinating band and sporting events if the whole school district doesn’t have the same year-round schooling schedule. The schedule of year round schooling is also difficult for vacationing, with only 3 weeks off every 45 school days. With three months of summer off, you can have proper “rejuvenation” time that you don’t have with the three weeks. But with year round school, it’s proven that students retain more information because they don’t have that big block of time off. When I first started going to year round school, I’ll admit I hated the whole idea of year round school. I found it preposterous that in the month of June, when everyone else was out of school and swimming and hanging out with their friends, we had to be solving math equations in the middle of the afternoon. The first day of school wasn’t really a big deal for anyone, because being at school all year long, there wasn’t really a “first” or “last” day of school in the school year. So on the first day I felt horribly misinformed as I was the only one dressed up in anything better But as time went on, I became to realize the benefits of year round school. In the middle of October, when every other school was studying for first trimester finals, we were off of school for a blissful three weeks.
