FRAMING

On the cover: I took this picture on my way to school one morning. I noticed that on this particular morning the sun appeared to be glowing and the fog just enhanced this. When I was on the bridge on Rohret Road, I loved the way the sun looked behind the little wires and knew it was definitely a picture worthy of the title page. On the title page: Though this photo doesn’t show a glorious landscape or someone doing a really cool trick, I like the way it looks. Using the aperture setting, I was able to get Kara Wagenknecht ’19 in focus with the background blurred. The downtown Iowa City lights also attract attention and I love the way the snowflake one looks as it is blurred.

Left: Sandrah Ochola ‘19 being framed by the window frame. Ochola was able to perform this in a very tight space, seen by her foot touching the ceiling. She is doing a scorpion, showing her amazing flexibility. Above: A couple of my friends and I were eating at Noodles & Co. downtown before our photoshoot, and when I walked outside, I saw the railing and knew it would make for a great framing or lines picture, ultimately choosing it for framing. Here Kaitlyn Klosterman ’19 poses while standing behind the railing, with her eyes being framed by it. FEBRUARY 2016 5

Top left: This picture actually turned out by mistake. I was experimenting with the different shutter speed settings on my camera and didn’t turn it up enough. I was meaning to stop the action when I asked Molly Howes ’17 to spin for me, but looking back at it, I really like how her scarf, especially the lines, show her movement. Left: Kaitlyn Klosterman ’19 decided to go ‘ice skating’ on an icy patch downtown. This specific day was so cold that there were several spots on the sidewalk that were covered with ice. This photo shows Klosterman trying to keep her balance while skating. Top right: When taking this picture, I had to ask Sandrah Ochola ‘19 to leap multiple times so I could get the picture to turn out the way I wanted it. I really like how you see lines on all sides going to the middle, when Ochola is in the air. 6 FEBRUARY 2016

APERTURE 8 FEBRUARY 2016

Above: My friends and I were warming up inside a hotel downtown during our photoshoot when I decided to take this photo of Kara Wagenknecht ’19. I like how the background is simple and the picture gives you a different angle and perspective of the subject. Top right: In this picture, Molly Howes ’17 stands smiling in a staircase at West High. I thought the background was very simple, yet looked nice with her haircolor and the railing. I also like the fact that when it’s blurred it doesn’t attract as much attention and it’s easy to focus on the subject. Bottom right: Olivia Dachtler ’19 was just sitting down at her desk, looking at her photos on her camera, when I decided it was a good time to take an aperture photo. I like how this picture provides contrast to my other aperture pictures, because the background is busier and gives something else to look at.

PORTRAITURE Top left: Caroline Young ’19 was standing against a plain wall for her portrait while I was trying to get her to laugh naturally. After a couple minutes of doing that, I finally got her to and captured it. Bottom left: I love the way the brick walls at West High look and think they provide great backgrounds. I got Sandrah Ochola ’19 to stand in front of one, which I think looked great with her skin tone, and just asked her to smile. Top right: For this picture, I wanted to capture Sandrah Ochola ’19 naturally. I gave her little guidance except for asking her to stand in front of the railing, and from the angle I captured her at, Ochola looks like a goddess.

LINES

Below: I thought the bricks worked really well as leading lines. When standing from afar, it looks like they’re coming closer together toward the middle of the picture, directing the viewer to the subject, Olivia Dachtler ’19. Right: There was this little wooden structure downtown with 4 posts keeping it up and the roof was simply wooden panels across the top. I had Kara Wagenknecht ’19 stand on the other side, but instead of having the lines point to Wagenknecht, I wanted to show them horizontally.

LIGHT Left: It is very hard to finding good lighting in a school, but after a lot of looking, I found some in one stairwell with a large window. In this picture, Molly Howes ‘17 stands at the top of the stairs, looking down and facing the light. I love the shadows of the hair strands the light casts on her face. Above: I took this picture on a morning on my way to school, the same morning I took the cover picture, actually. This was on Rohret Road before I had gotten to the bridge, so the sun was covered by the trees and you could see the streaks the flying jets created in the sky.

FEBRUARY 2016 15

Top left: I took this picture of Kara Wagenknecht ‘19 when we were taking a break during out photoshoot. I was upstairs in a hotel and she was below me. I caught her looking up and the second level. Top right: This picture was taken at the same time and place as the picture next to it, except for in this picture, Kaitlyn Klosterman ‘19 and Kara Wagenknecht ‘19 are on the upper level and I am directly below them. Bottom Left: Sandrah Ochola ‘19 looking directly at the camera. I liked just having a picture of her eyes, because I think it shows intensity and feeling, without knowing where she is.

PERSPECTIVE FEBRUARY 2016 17

SPEED OF LIGHT

Below: Caroline Young ‘19 looking on at West High in front of the doors. I like this picture because half of her face is lit up and the other half is in the shade. Right: I again took this picture in the morning on my way to school and wanted to capture the streaks the jets were leaving in the sky. I also thought the sky looked really pretty during sunrise and liked the contrast with the trees and bridge.

SPEED OF LIGHT

Left: I also took this picture during my ride to school in the morning. I was sitting in the passenger’s seat while my dad was driving and looked out the fogged-up window. I really liked how the sun looked through this specific window, since it wasn’t was clear. Above: This is a photo of Molly Howes ’17 by the window on a stairwell at school. I really like how the sun is showing all the marks on the window and how Howes is just a silhouette.
