ELLIE BROWN’S PHOTO PROJECT

ABOVE: Allie Harvey ‘19 stands at the top of a staircase at West High School as she moves in between classes during the school day. RIGHT: Avrill Gratton ‘19 photographed at West High School says, “I like the idea of school, learning and furthering my education. However, school has become something different and now some students don’t feel safe, whether it’s mentally or physically. I think we as a whole need to work on bettering the environment for all students whatever the situation.

LINES

ABOVE: Students Maggie Towler ‘19, Allie Harvey ‘19, and Avrill Gratton ‘19 admire the mural in the science hallway at West High School during their lunch period.

FRAMING BELOW: A sign stopping people from going up the down stairs that lead up to the L tracks in a suburb of Chicago. The sign is framed by the tracks of the track that stretches above the city.

PERSPECTIVE LEFT: Emma Hall ‘21 looks through a dirty window that is centered in a door closing off a hallway in West High School during a lunch period so people don’t disturb the classes that are still in session. BELOW: Emma Hall ‘21 looks up at the camera as she walks down the stairs of West High.

APERTURE

LEFT: Christmas lights are year round things when they are wrapped around a color coordinated bookshelf. These lights are featured in my room. BELOW: This small forest sits right in my backyard and features a tree house that my neighbors build a few years back. I stood on my porch in my backyard to get this downward view.

ABOVE: Lexi Moore ‘19 was able to roll the windows down in her car on a surprisingly warm day in January. I managed to snap this shot out of the window of her moving car, making the background blurry but was able to focus on the side mirror of the car. RIGHT: Mia Nolte demonstrates a turn to the rest of her peers in the Jazz 8 class at Nolte Academy of Dance after her teacher compliments her turns and asks her to show the class.

SHUTTER SPADE

PORTRAIT RIGHT: Emma Hall ‘21 stands outside in the West High School courtyard on an unusually warm day in December. However not warm enough for the courtyard to be crowded with people eating lunch like during the warmer months. NEXT PAGE: Camille Yuen poses for the camera with different funny poses. “CC do a normal smile,” her mother tells her from across the room.

LIGHT

LEFT: These are hanging lights above my kitchen table. I focused on the light of the bulbs and changed the aperture and shutter speed so the rest of the room was dark, even though there was light in the room. BELOW: These are reflections of my Christmas lights that I have wrapped around my bookshelf. These lights are reflections on the wall next to the lights.

TOP: Madeleine Roberts-Ganim ‘19 puts her hair in a bun for her ballet class in the dressing room at Nolte Academy. For ballet class you have to wear a black leotard, pink tights, and a bun. BOTTOM LEFT: “Dancing really gives you the opportunity to explore different elements about yourself, both mentally and physically, which is really cool,” says Mia Nolte.

BOTTOM RIGHT: Students Kristin Asa ‘19 and Sandrah Ochola ‘19 look on as some of their friends do a combination across the floor during a jazz class at Nolte Academy of Dance.

EVENT

ABOVE: The dancers in this Jazz 8 class at Nolte Academy watch as their teacher demonstrates a dance step that they are learning for their recital dance that they will perform in June. LEFT: Lydia Mcintire ‘20 from City High does a cartwheel during a jazz class at Nolte Academy when she finds out that I am going to be taking pictures of her and the rest of the students.

ABOVE: A crack in the glass of Lexi Moore’s ‘19 car window makes for a cool pattern. I was able to get this shot while the car was in motion driving along the Coralville Strip. RIGHT: My rainbow colored fish, King Charles the 72nd, swims around in his bowl after getting new water. His bowl is actually a glass flower vase because my mom didn’t want to buy a tank.

FREE FORM Below: Tessa Brown, my dog, gives me this look whenever she has done something bad. This happened to be taken right after she has knocked over the garbage can.

ABOVE: Maddie Brown ‘21 sits in the kitchen with her tutu and leotard still on after coming home from a long day of dance.

ABOVE: A light bulb in my ceiling that I noticed while I was lying in my bed. I took a picture of it and noticed that you could see up into the ceiling.

BELOW: My mom bought these Christmas lights but we didn’t have anywhere to put them so they are just chilling in a bowl in our bathroom.
