Disney’s F BY AVA WESSINGER AND CORISSA GAVIN
Disney has many small projects that not many people know about. Or a lot of people know about but don’t talk about. Here are two that should be known.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire The movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire came out in 2001 and has since been left out of the spotlight. This movie has a very diverse cast, one that you wouldn’t find in any other Disney movie. It also has lessons that are good for your child and you to learn. The movie is about a group of people finding the lost city of Atlantis. Then later on in the movie there’s a huge plot twist.
Aladdin Released: November 13,1992 Total Domestic: $217,350,219 Total Foreign: $286.700,000

Kingdom Hearts (without the of) is a videogame series that came out in 2002. While the game is made by Square, Disney is a main aspect of the game. When you play the game, you’ll most likely be confused. Once you get past the confusion, the game has a good lesson. This game is a mix between the Final Fantasy franchise and Disney. You follow through the life of Sora, a boy who will do anything to save his friends.

Dear Newsie Mouse, This past week I’ve spent time with my friends. I say friend loosely because in the past we’ve wanted to drop her as a friend. Should I continue pretending to be her friend to help her through her life, or just drop her and find new friend? Sincerely, All The Single Ladies
Dear All The Single Ladies, Giiiirl drop her like it’s hot! If she’s tearing you down then tear her out of your friend ship. I am all about being fake, but if she is really irritating you but also she gives you stuff then keep her around. If she doesn’t do anything then say “buh bye”. Sincerely, Newsie Mouse
Dear Newsie Mouse, I went to a party a while ago and something odd happened. The host of the party, let’s call her Panda. Panda invited 15 people, but only six showed up. Then later in the night, Panda cuddled up with someone, they weren't even dating! The other invitees and I did not know how to confront her about it. Even now we don’t know what to do. What should we do?
Dear Newsie Mouse, I have been having trouble at school. There’s a group of girls who won’t stop picking on me. They would slam my locker on From, Anonymous my fingers. Smack my books onto the floor. Dear All The Single Ladies, It’s important to tell her how you feel. If she’s doing something that irritates you then share how you feel before cutting her off. If she really is going through something serious like she seems to be, then try to work things out with her before you make any rash decisions. But if she’s just dragging you down then maybe it’s time to say goodbye. Sincerely, Newsie Mouse

At a breakfast stop we were being insane and probably illegal. I followed behind my friends as we raced across a four lane highway to get to a Waffle House for breakfast after a long night on our charter bus. Upon arriving we came to the realization that the Waffle House was full of other band kids who had the same idea. Of course no one listened to me when I told them that it would be packed. So, what did we do? We ran back across the highway of course. Later that day, as the bus pulled up to the Rosen Plaza Hotel, you could just hear the excitement as the students packed their bags to venture into their new homes for the week.
All three buses unloaded their suitcases and backpacks and went in to see their hotel rooms. My group was tired of just sitting around, and for good reason, the bus ride to Florida lasted 25 hours. So, we decided to relax at the pool. I guess lots of other people had the same idea because most of the band students hit the pool after getting settled into their rooms. The pool was so full that bumping into someone was a regular occurrence. We were so busy throughout the rest of the trip that we only got one other chance at going to the pool.

Since we were in Florida, the home of Universal Studios and Disney World, the band went to both parks. On our first day there we went to Universal Studios. Things were crazy! My group was the last to meet at the Men in Black gift shop before we started marching. Half of our group arrived ten minutes late. To makes things worse, the other half of our group got lost! We made it, with the Medds sort of angry at us, and spent the day paying more attention to the time.

The next day was our first one in Disney! We got a day off from marching and a full day to enjoy the wonders of Magic Kingdom. My group spent about an hour waiting in line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It was super fun, but I’m never going to wait in a line that long again. There’s not much to say about this day other than we blew all our money at the gift shops. That day ended with a viewing of the firework show.
The Pool at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. All of the band kids spent time in the pool on the first night of the trip.
Before I went on this trip I did not even know that I wanted to see Cinderella’s castle so badly. It was truly breathtaking.Other than the castle and Wishes the most eventful part of the day was when my group went on Splash Mountain, a water roller coaster with a drop height of 52.5 ft. Another great part of the day was crashing in the hotel room with friends to shower and be lazy for the rest of the night. It was both a long day and a memorable one that I will not forget anytime soon.
I was in a group of about ten people, we all split up after arriving. I decided to squeeze in as many rides as possible. We ended up all the way across the park from where we were supposed to meet up with the rest of the band before our performance. We boarded the train at the station and got to the right side of the park three minutes before we were supposed to meet. We did not know where the gift shop was. Our whole group took off at a dead sprint and somehow managed to arrive on time despite being seriously judged by the people we ran past in our attempts to make it on time. It was finally the day. We got to march in Epcot. The first thing we did was head to the backstage area of Epcot. Then we prepared ourselves to march. After the dreaded time in the heat and in our stuffy uniforms we rejoiced in the air conditioning of the bus. Later, we got to venture around Epcot. We went on Mission; Space many times and at night we watched the firework show there. Though, I wasn’t too impressed with it. It’s not just because I could not see the Earth in the middle because I was standing behind a group of tall people. I wasn't impressed because there weren’t many fireworks. Though one exciting part was when the boats set on fire.
I must admit, I was afraid for this day. Sure, I wanted to see Epcot but did my wish to see it really outweigh my fear of marching in the Florida heat? No. It did not. After mentally preparing myself for the ordeal I got in my row. The performance actually ended up being one of my favorites! I think this really was one of the best days of the trip. We had some amazing food, travelled around the world of Epcot, went to Hollywood Studios to ride the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror, and then back to Epcot. We got to the hotel late, hit the pool one last time, and spent the rest of the night in the comfort of our hotel room watching television.
During the Spring, Epcot has a flower festival where you can see hedges of your favorite Disney characters.

The iconic Rock ‘n Roller Coaster in Holleywood Studios at Disney World in Florida.
On our last day in Disney, we started off in Animal Kingdom. We ate breakfast at the Rainforest cafe and went into the park after. We went on Expedition Everest and were thrilled to go on more rides. We rode the bus to Hollywood Studios and we found something odd. The Disney bus was playing Harry Potter music. We got off and went into the park. We rode some of the iconic rides including Rockin’ Rollercoaster and Tower of Terror.
Bus Ride Home
We began our bus ride back home in the afternoon and it seemed a lot shorter than the way there. Mostly because everyone slept for half of the ride. The fun rest stops during the middle of the night kept us all wondering when we would stop and what food places would be there. According to the Medds, after one breakfast stop that went over the time frame, we couldn’t get Steak & Shake When we finally got back to West High we were sad and wanted to go back.
The bus ride home felt a lot shorter than the ride to Florida. All in all the bus ride home was better and faster than the ride there but the destination was not nearly as fun. Although I partly wanted to return home to take a nice shower and sleep in my bed I also wished I could be in Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios once again. The worst part of the trip was leaving. When we got back to West High I wished we could turn around and go back. One of the worst parts about being back home is missing my group of friends there. At least I will have the memories and I will hopefully return the next time the band goes to Florida.
For me, this day was really about appreciating Disney World before we left for Iowa. My group stayed together for the most part and we tried to take advantage of all the rides we could.
The narrow passageway on the second bus. The kids are eager to go home.

Negative
The Power of Disney We learn many values when we are younger which may carry on into our adulthood. They are all of some importance in shaping us into who we are today. BY CARMELA COHEN SUAREZ
Movies are more powerful than we think. The topic of whether Disney movies are a positive or negative influence on children is open to debate. Here are two different views on the topic. Remember, there are some movies whose messages should be discussed with children.
Most of the Disney princesses, especially in the earlier movies are very similar in appearance. For young girls who want to be as much like a Disney Princess as possible, this image can be damaging to their confidence and how they view their own bodies.
“You’ll have your looks, your pretty face and don’t underestimate the -Ursula (The Little Mermaid)
Throughout earlier movies, it is a recurring theme that if you are beautiful things in life will automatically go well for you. “You’ll have your looks, your pretty face and don’t underestimate the importance of body language!” says Ursula from The Little Mermaid when Ariel is unsure whether to get rid of her voice for legs in order to be with a man. Ariel exchanges her voice for legs to please a man. She cannot voice her opinions or thoughts in any way and relies entirely on her looks to captivate him… It works! Ariel sacrifices her voice in order to do what she believes a man wants. They end up together even though they cannot communicate with each other. Some Disney movies give the message
that girls do not need to speak their minds and that men will love them as long as they look good. “It’s about time you got your head out of those books and paid attention to more important things. Like me. The whole town’s talking about it. It’s not right for a woman to read. Soon, she starts getting ‘ideas’ and ‘thinking’” says Gaston to Belle in Beauty and the Beast. This gives girls the idea that good looks will get you through life and education will not. There have not been many characters of different skin tones in their movies. The ones that are tend to be shown in a negative light or are just plainly portrayed wrong. In Dumbo, which came out in 1941, there is a group of crows that smoke and sing and sound African American. The name of the main crow is Jim Crow. This name does sound quite familiar… Do the Jim Crow Laws ring a bell? They were laws made to segregate, or divide whites from colored people in the south after slavery was outlawed. People with lighter skin are mainly portrayed as good while darker skinned characters are portrayed as a bad character or a villain. An example of this is Jafar in Aladdin he is the villain and is also one of the darker skinned characters in the movie.
“ I remember Daddy told me, fairy tales can come true. You got to make them happen, it all depends on you!” -Tiana (The Princess and the Frog)
Rapunzel’s chameleon Pascal always stays by her side no matter what adventure she goes on, the mice help Cinderella out in many ways and Flounder and Sebastian stay friends with Ariel even when Sebastian almost gets cooked by a French chef while he is trying to take care of Ariel. Disney also helps to teach family values. In Beauty and the Beast Belle values her father above all else. She trades her own freedom for her father and even after falling in love with The Beast, Belle returns to her father. We also learn not to judge others only on appearance. There are many other important life lessons to be learned from Disney movies, which is why children should not be entirely banned from watching them. In Snow White you are taught to not take things from strangers and that being too vain will only bring you pain. In Pocahontas you are taught to not let someone’s skin tone decide what you
think of him or her and to love and care for nature. Women’s roles are also becoming more realistic and stronger. In Aladdin, Jasmine says, “I am not a prize to be won!” When her father is trying to marry her off to a man she does not love. This shows that women are not to be objectified. Although Mulan must dress as a man to gain honor and to protect her family, she proves that women are just as able and valuable
“I am not a prize to be won!” -Jasmine, (Aladdin)

Positive
Disney movies have some good life lessons and themes in them and they als teach children to hope and to dream. The portrayal of women has also gotten better over the years. One important theme in Disney movies is how friendship is important to happiness.
as men. She fights for her family and ends up saving her country. Elsa and Anna show that women do not need a man to come and rescue them. They also show that family is the most important thing and should be valued. Merida shows bravery and independence and does not adhere to what is the normal personality of a Disney princesses. Disney movies also teach children not to lose their innocence. They teach them that a little hope can go a long way and they teach them to have an imagination. They show that your dreams and aspirations for life can come true. Disney movies have happy endings, which teaches children that no matter how bad life may get you cannot give up; you will reach your happy ending eventually. We need to be aware of both the positives and negatives of Disney films and we need to help educate others, especially kids, on these things. We simply cannot just cut these movies out of their lives; a little awareness goes a long way. The power of hoping and dreaming is important and must be preserved.

Whittaker Knows Best
The Newsies
Ms. Whittaker is like Alice because she is really nice and she seems like the person who would go on adventures. I know that Alice is technically not a princess, but she is a Disney female character. Not to mention, Mrs. Whittaker has blondish hair, while Alice has blonde hair. -Corissa Gavin Ms. Whittaker is definitely like Rapunzel because she is fun, and curious, and kinda spontaneous. She makes wacky voices to represent a group of people, kinda like how Rapunzel mocks Flynn. Ms. Whittaker also has about the same hair color as Rapunzel. -Enyo Okeoma Ms. Whittaker could be like many different princesses or female Disney characters. I agree with Enyo because she is free-spirited and has a lot of energy like Rapunzel. She also has similar hair color. I think that her hair is a mix of Rapunzel’s color and Merida’s curls. I also think she could be like Anna from Frozen because Anna is adventurous and optimistic. -Carmela Cohen Suarez

OPINON
MAY 26, 2017
Ms. Whittaker is most like Merida. Obviously, a big similarity is the long curly hair. But also, like Merida, she’s brave. Some of the things she’s done in the name of journalism required a lot of courage. And like Merida, she’s confident in that she’s willing to share those stories without worrying about what others think. -Razan Abdelrahman
Ms. Whittaker is a lot like Rapunzel because, she’s fun and outgoing. She doesn’t really mind being herself with her classes. She’s also very giddy and nice. But when it’s needed, she knows how to put her foot down and take control in a gentle yet aggressive tone. Even the way she looks, also reminds me of Rapunzel because of the blonde hair. I don’t know she just looks a lot like her. -Moira Iglecias
I think that Ms. Whittaker is like Merida when it comes to looks because of the curly hair. But I also think her and Show White are also similar, because they both have fair skin and have an easy going personality. But Ms. Whittaker isn’t as helpless and guillable as her; she’s the opposite. -Ava Wessinger

Summary A musical in 1899 about paper deliverers in New York City. If it sounds boring, you’re thinking wrong. Newsies are boys who spend their time selling newspapers to get money. Jack wants to sells papers with David and his little brother called Les, so that he can sell more papers. The first important lesson that they learn is that the headline does not sell the paper, the Newsie does. They spend their days running and selling newspapers, while they have to face the struggles of life. While they try to sell newspapers, the pay is lowered so
Summary (THIS SUMMARY CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS) This musical is based off of the 1989 movie, Heathers. It follows the life of Veronica Sawyer, a girl who wants to fit in. She joins a girl gang at school, The Heathers, consisting of Heather Chandler, Heather Duke, and Heather McNamara. One day, Veronica meets a new student called Jason Dean (J.D.). Throughout this musical there are many unexpected events. At the end Veronica saves the day and fixes her relationship with everyone that’s still alive.
the Newsies form a Union and go on strike. Opinion For my first time watching this musical, I love it. It’s fun and truly makes you want to start singing along. This takes place in an interesting time period and talks about what life was like back in 1899. It includes strikes, workers getting dropped, and many other hard realities of life. If you’re going to see it, bring your newspaper and cap and sing along to your heart’s content.

Opinion This is still one of my favorite musicals. Not only is there drama, but also there are good life lessons. For example, “If your boyfriend tells you his plan to blow up the school, try and find a way to stop it.” This is one of the many lessons that you can learn from this musical. If you’re looking for a musical to watch, then go find a showing of Heather’s. Be sure you bring tissues and your sense of “This isn’t right, and I know this, but I like it anyways.”

Summary This musical is based off of the book written in the late 1800s by Victor Hugo. It follows the life of Jean Valjean who is freed from prison and meets a woman named Fantine. Fantine had a young child named Cosette that she could not pay for. Fantine dies and it is up to Jean Valjean to take care of Cosette. Later, when the July/June Revolution is upon them, Jean Valjean must keep Cosette from blowing his cover to Javert. Opinion In the beginning of April, West High School performed Les Mis-
erables. Which I thought made this review needed. Although this isn’t a review of the West High rendition, this musical is one of my favorites. This is because I spent many days rewatching the movie and listening to the music on repeat, like most of the other musicals. This one really interests me because it’s not something you’d learn about in History Class. If you go to see this, you could prepare yourself and read the book, but I don’t think you should do that, unless you love reading 19th century literature. Overall, it’s a good musical and there are many lessons you can learn from it.
Welcome to the small little corner where no one will care if you burst out into song and dance. All of these reviews are my opinion and all of these musicals are ones I love dearly. I based it off of how many times you can watch it and not get tired of it. 10 being I’ll never get sick of it and 1 being “I only need to watch it once.”
Summary Before Lin Manuel-Miranda wrote Hamilton, he wrote another musical called In the Heights. This musical is about three days in Washington Heights and what Usnavi, Vanessa, Nina’s life is like when the unexpected happens. It keeps true to the hardships of life; winning the lottery, death, college dropouts, and rent payments. Though they all come together in the end to make the neighborhood better for everyone.

Opinion After I was finally through with my Hamilton phase, I needed some more music from Lin Manuel-Miranda. This was my choice. I love the spunkiness of this musical. Summary This musical goes all over the place. First, We follow Roxie Hart’s time through jail as she is held for the murder of Fred Casley. After, Roxie goes around with another convicted woman and they perform shows together as Roxie & Velma.
the twenties, this musical is surely my favorite story that takes place during the time. I also love murder mysteries, this musical has the best mix of upbeat jazz and the struggles of being a murderer. If you go to see this one, make sure that you know what you’re getting into, you don’t want to go in blind or you’ll be wondering why all of the prisoners can do a musical number without wearing their jail uniforms.

Something unexpected happens during the show, and now Christine must find a way to save the others from the Phantom. After a few years, Christine gets engaged

When I was watching it I had no idea of the plot, turns out it’s a lot different than you may think. An opera of an opera. My kind of show. If you’re bored, you should watch Phantom of the Opera. For some, there are many insecurities, with trying something new… Do I look weird? Will people judge me for what I’m wearing? Is there something odd about this outfit? Opinion: Everything was so well written. It got straight to the
point and did not stall to get to the best parts. It was just such a rush, I couldn’t stop reading.

What about poor Xander? Opinion: Rating: 4/5
I really enjoyed reading this novel. Although the plot can be hard to follow, there is a really great story line that has a variety of characters which make it easier for the reader to relate to them. Like The Selection, this book is about young adults making startling realizations about the world they live in. Unlike The Selection, Matched does not incorporate competition as a central theme. For me, the book took a little more time to read than The Selection, but it has just as many plot twists to keep you flipping the pages.

story takes place in a futuristic version of North America where there is a casting system. This system ranks you and your family from the numbers 1-8 with 8 being the lowest and most poor of the castes. The main character, America, a 5, takes part in a reality show-like competition called The Selection to win Prince Maxon’s heart and to become the princess in the nation’s capitol. The televised competition is almost like a version of The Bachelor where Prince Maxon will eliminate girls at regular intervals until there are only a few left. This competition is a problem for her because America is already in love with Aspen, who is from her hometown and a 6. America does not want to be in the competition at all. She goes thinking that she will not outlast the other girls but ends up finding something special with the crown prince.
Opinion: This book did not let me down at all. I read it for the
first time about two years ago and to this day it remains being one of my all time favorite stories. For some, romance is not their thing… But believe me when I say that this book is worth it. It is not just another novel with a love triangle in it, it is much more. The Selection takes a look at the nature of love, poverty, competition, personal freedom, feminism, and society as a whole.

Opinion: The Year We Fell Apart was one of those books where Rating: 5/5
you had to somewhat push yourself to read to get to the good parts. Although that may be, I think this book was totally worth the push and the read. The supporting characters and the fun little side plots and drama made this book so amazing that you just wanted to find out more. This book can also be relatable in some ways if you’re in a relationship or just having family troubles. It hit me hard and I just wanted to bawl my eyes out. I love how this book pretty elatable in some ways. The ending is everything you could want in a romance book, it isn’t one of those book where it just ends suddenly without you knowing what happened to the characters after the whole plot was settled.

Teachers have lives outside of school. They all have their own interesting personas and some are even connected, in a way, to the personalities of Disney characters. BY ENYO OKEOMA AND CARMELA COHEN SUAREZ
We would like to think that our personalities are distinct and special to only ourselves, but that is not always the case. Many of us have similar personalities and characteristics to others which includes Disney characters. There are tons of ways we can relate Disney movies to our everyday lives. One of which is linking the personalities of our teachers to those of Disney’s unique characters.

McGrane says she’s Cinderella “I hate to admit it, but I’d like to be Cinderella where Cidnerella’s kinda taken care of by the guy. But at the same time I like to be kind of adventurous. I guess I want someone there to support me (...) But who really wants to be saved by a guy?” -Science Teacher, Ms. McGrane
