F OJ THOUGHTS
IOWA CITY WEST HIGH SCHOOL | 2901 MELROSE AVE. | IOWA CITY , IA 52246 | INTRO.WSSPAPER.COM | MAY 25, 2018
In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”He didn’t say any more, but we’ve always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores. The abnormal mind is quick to detect and attach itself to this quality when it appears in a normal person, and so it came about that in college I was unjustly accused of being a politician, because I was privy to the secret griefs of wild, unknown men. Most of the confidences were unsought — frequently I have feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realized by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon; for the intimate revelations of young men, or at least the terms in which they express them, are usually plagiaristic and marred by obvious suppressions. Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope. I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my JOHN nobbishly suggested, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parcelled out unequally at birth. And, after boasting this way o COOPER I come to the admission that it has a limit. Conduct may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marshes, but after a certain point I don’t care what it’s founded on. When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction — Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous abouwt him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away. This responsiveness had nothing to do with that flabby impressionability which is dignified under the name of the “creative temperament.”— it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again. No — Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men.My family have been prominent, well-to-do people in this Middle Western city for three generations. The Carraways are something of a clan, and we have a tradition that we’re descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather’s brother, who came here in fifty-one, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries on to-day. I never saw this great-uncle, but I’m supposed to look like him — with special reference to the rather hard-boiled painting that hangs in father’s office. I graduated from New Haven in 1915, just a quarter of a century after my father, and a little later I participated in that delayed Teutonic migration known as the Great War. I enjoyed the counterraid so thoroughly that I came back restless. Instead of being the warm centre of the world, the Middle West now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe — so I decided to go East and learn the bond business. Everybody I knew was in the bond business, so I supposed it could support one more single man. All my aunts and uncles talked it over as if they were choosing a prep school for me, and finally said, “Why — ye — es,” with very grave, hesitant faces. Father agreed to finance me for a year, and after various delays I came East, permanently, I thought, in the spring of twenty-two. The practical thing was to find rooms in the city, but it was a warm season, and I had just left a country of wide lawns and friendly trees, so when a young man at the office suggested that we take a house together in a commuting town, it sounded like a great idea. He found the house, a weather-beaten

DRINKS TO TRY THIS SUMMER
Frosted & Frozen Lemonade
BY SIMONE WILLIS Everyone knows that during the summer, the heat can be pretty aggressive. Pulling out the ole' fan and turning the AC all the way is one of the many solutions to cooling down. Eating and drinking cool foods or drinks is another way to avoid the heat. Here are some amazing and tasteful drinks you should try during summer of 2018.
A twist on lemonade with an extra kick. Because on a hot day what's better than lemonade? Some ice cream to go with. It doesn’t take long to mix it all up. So take a little time so you have a great twist on that burning hot day.
Virgin Bue Margarita This Virgin Blue Margarita is a refreshing drink to help you cool off all summer long. Your parents won't complain cause its a drink for you to have no need to be scared because cause the only thing you might have afterwords is just a brain freeze. No alcohol need to have lots of fun, mix this up and you will have the mostest of fun.
Strawberry Lime Slush Try something new with strawberry and lime. Make it a slushy cause slushies can never be denied. Squeeze that lime, let it mix all up cause summer is a coming and there’s no other drink to try but this one over there on the side.
Boba Tea With this nice cool drink, there's a lilttle surprise at the end. Coming with a thick straw, this tea has small jelly balls at the bottom adding extra flavor. There are many different flavors this tea can be. If you wanna go basic there's always strawberry, peach, mango and others like that. Or if your more on the unexpected side there's lychee, passion fruit, and even plum.

MY VEGETARIAN LIFE BY CHLOE STENCE
When most people think of becoming a vegetarian, they are very hesitant because let’s be honest, meat is delicious. In my case, I also love meat, but I am also a huge animal lover. This is the main reason I decided to become a vegetarian because of animal rights, and how animals deserve just as much freedom as humans, and how sad it is that millions of animals are slaughtered and tortured in the meat industry everyday without their consent. What really sparked my interest in becoming vegetarian was my love for animals, and as soon as I really thought about becoming vegetarian, the next day I was already sticking to my new diet. Growing up, I was an avid meat eater, I would typically have meat in every single meal I ate, sausages for breakfast, turkey sandwich for lunch, and steak for dinner. There were also fruits and vegetables thrown into my diet as well, but meat was a big part of it. Like most kids, I couldn’t go outside and play unless I had finished everything on my plate. One of my initial concerns about being a vegetarian was that I wouldn’t be getting enough protein, because I am in cheerleading, which a very intense sport, and I lift weights, which means I work out about 8 times a week, so I need a lot of protein in my diet to replenish my body after a hard workout. However, I soon learned that there are many different types of ways to get protein you can eat besides
instead of meat for protein. The first couple days of being vegetarian was very hard, I was surrounded by meat at every meal, and trust me, I wanted to eat it. But I’d just have to tell myself no and reminded myself why I'm doing this and then the temptation would fade away. As the weeks went on, I was doing very well at not eating meat and I felt pretty good about myself. My parents were very supportive of my decision, although my mom would always lecture me about not getting enough protein. At first I didn’t really listen to her, but as time went on, I wasn’t really making room for any other proteins in my diets and I started losing muscle. This came as a surprise to me, because I thought I was doing very well but it turns out I was not balancing my diet enough. I had been a vegetarian for about a month before I first cheated on my diet, and I decided to break my streak and eat a chicken caesar salad. I was very disappointed in myself and I decided that I needed to start eating a balanced diet so my body would get the nutrients it needs. One of my biggest struggles with being vegetarian was the judgement I would get. When I would tell people I don't eat meat, they would be all surprised and ask me numerous questions, make fun of me, called me stupid and say that humans are meant to eat meat. I would just reply and say that although I don't agree with their opinion, I respect it and I’m not going to push my

JOHN COOPER'S TEACHING EXPERIENCE BY CHLOE STENCE
“There's a difference between teachers who want to teach and teachers who just need a paycheck.” In the English department near the library, is a classroom. It's not just any classroom, it is John Cooper's classroom. A classroom that tells a story. Cooper is a favorite among students who have him, because of his relatable humor, fun personality, and his interesting stories. But like any person, John Cooper has a life story. He has had his ups and downs in his teaching career like any other teacher, and his story is anything but normal. John Cooper was born on August 31st, 1990, in Des Moines, Iowa. “I first realized I wanted to be a teacher in 2008” says Cooper. “I was starting my first year of college, and I was actually majoring in something else, which was theatre acting and I switched majors from that to teaching” says Cooper. Only a year after switching majors, John was already doing his clinicals as a student teacher. Because John skipped kindergarten, he was 2 years younger than everyone in his class, making him 19, and already ahead of everyone in work. “This disgruntled everyone else in my class, because I was already ahead of them, and had completed two years of college already. This really made me feel like I could actually accomplish something and be something great” says Cooper. After clinicals, John got an internship as a student teacher at Nole Community High School, and soon got hired and actually paid at a school Jerseyville, Missouri.

John worked in Missouri for two years, and then resigned. “I resigned because my whole family lived in Iowa, my grandmother had just passed away, and the school district just wasn't a match for me.” John and his family all decided to regather in Iowa City and continue to live there. When John went back to Iowa, he was not planning on teaching again, and was just taking classes at The University of Iowa. “A friend of mine had asked me how I was supporting myself, and in that point of time I wasn't really working, and had just saved up a ton of money. But him asking me this became clear to me that it would be smart for me to continue working.” says Cooper. About a year later, Cooper started working in The Iowa City School District. Cooper has been to many schools, and has had bad experiences with some of them. In Saint Louis, the principal of the school called John in. She then proceeded to ask him how she should organize the English department. “This made me think of two options. Either I was the most experienced teacher in the english department, or that she was just asking everyone for advice on what she should do with the department.” The staff at his old school was troubling, and no one could ever agree on what they wanted to do with the department he worked in. “Nobody was agreeing on anything, whether it was curriculum, whether it was who gets what classes, really just anything they could argue about. That for me when it comes to a career was tough because I came to that school with the sole purpose to teach individuals and work with kids, not argue about who does what.” says Cooper.
Out of all the schools John has went to, West High has been his favorite. “The best part about West High is that everyone just does their own thing, and there's still so much respect, and everyone is aiming towards the same goal, to be the best in Iowa, and even the best in the nation.” says Cooper. John's favorite thing about West High is the atmosphere and the care all the staff put into their job. “The atmosphere at West is different than any other, here we truly care about education. When you feel good in a school, you’re going to do better things. Within my first week, I knew I had found the right school.” says Cooper. One of the most notable things about John is his personality. His quirky nature and funny sense of humor makes him a favorite among the students of West High. “ I had Mr. Cooper as a substitute in World History and he was really cool. My favorite part about him was his sense of humor and how I could learn material while getting a good laugh.” Says Lucas McCool 19’. “There are times where I've been frustrated because students were not living up to their potential, but I have not met a kid at West that I have not gotten along with, and I think that is really cool.” says Cooper.

WEIRD GIFTS
From gifts you don’t need to gifts you’ve never seen, picking gifts is hard so it’s kinda common to be in shock when it’s time to open that present up. Or maybe you’re on the other end, unsure what they will like. So you just pick up anything and hope for the best. In times like these, weird gifts always seem to be a thing.
Recieved: Assen Olivo ‘20 “The weirdest gift I have received is pencils and a talking pig toy. I got them from my mom for my birthday. A hard battery like feel covered in soft cloth pig that talks at random times when walking past it. It snorts and says a few words.”
Given:
“The weirdest gift that I have given to someone is my sister’s used earrings. She had recently gotten them for her birthday. But I had forgotten to get my friend a gift so I took my sister’s earrings she had recently gotten and wore.”
Ahjianna Walker ‘20 “The weirdest gift I have received was an iPhone 5c because it wasn’t working and broke recently before that, and then my grandma just bought me another Iphone 5c knowing it would do the same thing as the other.”
“The weirdest gift I have given was just one shoe. I lost the other and just wanted to make sure they knew I was actually giving them a present.”
Lucas McCool ‘19 “The weirdest gift I have recieved is a used candle. It didnt have much time left until it was gone and melted all away so I was kinda confused by it.”
“The weirdest gift I have ever given would be a mouse. I thought it would be funny to my friend would enjoy it. Neither of those came true tho. He mostly hated it.”
