Samara Burnett ‘24 Everyone has different summer plans. Sometimes they look back at the memories fondly, sometimes they look back and cringe. For Samara Burnett ’24, her summer plans were more enjoyable than not. The most exciting, or memorable thing that Burnett had done last summer was accidentally swimming with dolphins. She had been jet skiing with family in Florida when she was thrown off, and given a pretty big bruise. At first, she thought that sharks were swimming around her, which would terrify anyone, but to her relief and luck, the sharks were actually dolphins! Coincidentally, when she was thrown off, it was right next to a pod of dolphins. Now that’s a cool experience.
Burnett’s favorite thing about the summer was getting to see family she hadn’t seen in a while, while her least favorite thing was Covid-19. Quarantine happened in March of 2020, which probably ruined a lot of summer plans for a lot of people, so it’s a good thing that Burnett was still able to visit her family. Another of her least favorite things about her summer was that her trip to Belize got cancelled. In the spring of 2019, a few teachers at Northwest Junior High organized plans to take a group of students of the Central American country of Belize for a week in the summer of 2020. Unfortunately, Burnett and several other students did not get to go on the trip. Burnett also tried something new last summer. She went hiking for the first time, real hiking that is. She mentioned that she also thought that a serial killer would try and sneak up on her most of the time, but other than that, it was smooth sailing. This summer, Burnett said she plans on doing a lot more hiking, something she found enjoyable. She said she was going to Florida again, and she had a lot of weddings to go to. She also jokingly mentioned that she would spend 90% of her time playing video games like most other kids, being a no-life. It’s obvious that Burnett had fun last summer, and is sure to have more this upcoming summer.

Jaxon Wells ‘23 “Different” is one word that Jaxon Wells ‘23 would use to describe his summer. One of his favorite things from the past summer was doing football workouts. Every morning, he had an hour-long lifting workout followed by field work, consisting of running, lots of body movement work. As they got farther into summer, they did more and more conditioning and learning how to really play football. One of his least favorite things from last summer was quarantine. “...All I did was stay up, my sleep schedule was all over the place. I’d stay up till like, five, six AM, and then like, wake up at noon.” Wells also fitted jumping off a roof into his summer. He said it was because of boredom. He was over at his friends house, when he climbed up onto his roof and onto the trampoline below. “I wondered what would happen.” Wells said, sporting a sheepish grin.
Last summer, the main thing that Wells did was protest. He went to many Black Lives Matter protests, even to some of the ones that got violent. Tear gas and rubber bullets were the most common weapons used against protesters in the summer of 2020. “I never got shot, but the tear gas hurt.” He says that all he really remembers from the protests was a lot of yelling and loud noises, along with his throat, eyes, and nose burning from the tear gas. This summer, Wells is planning on doing more football workouts, along with going to Atlanta to visit his dad’s side of the family in July.

Emily Vogt ‘24 A lot of plans got cancelled last summer, most summer camps included. Online camps are no fun, and they just don’t hold the same fun and thrill that in person summer camps do. Emily Vogt ‘24, tried some new things last summer. She and her family went on lots of hikes to pass the time. They also went on a vacation to Yellowstone for two weeks, which was an easy way to have a fun time and stay socially distanced and safe. Vogt said that they did a lot of swimming and canoeing, along with a lot of hiking. At some point, they might have encountered either a mountain lion or mountain goat, she said she wasn’t too sure. “It was like a cheetah-ish thing, not with spots though.” Vogt said that her favorite thing was making bracelets with friends. Vogt’s least favorite thing was that many anticipated plans got cancelled, such as visiting relatives and summer camps. “It just wasn’t the same.” Slowly though, over the summer things seemed to start going back to normal, and hopefully this summer she can see people she hadn’t seen in a while.
This summer, Vogt said she is very excited to go back to in person camps a lot. She is looking forward to seeing family and friends that she hasn’t seen in a long time, and going to family weddings as well. She had that her family has a vacation planned to Glacier as well, by which she meant Glacier National Park. Glacier is in Montana’s Rocky Mountains, with glacier-carved peaks and valleys running to the Canadian border. Vogt has an exciting summer planned, and hopefully it goes better than last summer!

Malachy KedlyBergman n ‘23 .
During the summer, not many people would want to move houses. Summer is a time to relax from school and responsibilities, and moving seems like a daunting prospect. For Malachy KedleyBergmann ‘23, moving from Philadelphia, ‘Philly’, made for a “relaxing summer”. Because of COVID-19, Kedley-Bergmann had the opportunity to live with family in Iowa, and took the chance. He said that he exercise, going on walks during lockdown to stay active. He said that he ran a lot, and that the weather was a nice plus. One thing that he didn’t like, however, was the derecho. Kedley-Bergmann was getting a tour of West High when it started, and when he was told to leave, he did. He was driving home with his mother when it happened, and was driving home when things started to get bad. “My mothers house was actually under some pretty serious construction.”
Not seeing many people was the average summer for most students, and people in general during COVID times. Other than moving, KedleyBergmann didn’t do much. This summer, he plans on getting a job where his stepmother work. She volunteers as a translator for Spanish speakers who want to get the vaccine. Hopefully KedleyBergmann can help out as well, seeing as he speaks pretty good Spanish. Other than moving back and volunteering, he says that he probably won’t be doing much this summer. Everyone’s summer is different, both this year and last year. Hopefully everyone has a better summer this year than the last, and we can only hope that nothing like COVID happens again and that summer plans can go on.

SUMMER SPORTS
Summer sports are staring. Many students at West are joining sports. Some of the sports students are joining are Softball, Baseball, Track and Field, and Golf. The students that are doing one of these sport either just started playing or have been playing for a while. The ones who have
been playing their sports for a while have became fond of the sport. And the ones who just started playing their sport wither became fond or just does not like the sport. So I took photos of some West athletes and then asked them what their favorite part of the sport they play. What I
notice from a lot of peoples when they told me what their favorite part was, they all have something in common. They have say that they enjoy the team and what they do.
