A staircase spirals to one of many West High’s entrances. After a recent snowfall, the air is chilly and the trees are drooping from the weight of the heavy, slightly melting snow. A lone car waits for its passenger in front of the steps.

Down the seemingly narrowing art hallway, a few students walk through with silent footsteps as classes go on. The warm brick colors of the columns leading to the hallway make it hard to miss the rather obscure hallway leading off of the large front door area.

From one of the many windows in West High is the view to the back parking lot. After a fresh snow fall is plenty of soft white snow covering the school grounds in a blanket of silence and cold. The area looks much cleaner. 2 FEBRUARY 2016

Framing The metal bars of the stairs leading the West High Courtyard, cold and slick with melting snow frame the oncoming other Intro students returning to the warmer indoors from their own picture taking.

A broken plastic robot raising its hands in surrender in front of Ms. Whittaker’s room in a patch of bright sunlight coming through from the large windows in the stairwell. The gritty floor looking almost clean in the light.

Perspective Rows of plastic black folding chairs are put up by custodians in the cafeteria before parent teacher conferences at West High. The floors having been cleaned of food and dust reflect light from the overhead fluorescent lights and transform the cafeteria from an eating place to a business-like room.

Shati Cooper ’18 poses in a clown head in the semi-frozen and slushy West High School courtyard where it is slippery, cold, and mostly silent. She sits on the damp bricks without a complaint and makes us laugh from her brilliant posing.

Portraiture Samalya Thenuwara ’18 pauses from her own picture taking and looks up in time for a photo in the language arts (?) hallway leading to the main entrance. The afternoon sunlight is weak and does not quite reach to the double doors she stands in front of.

On the way to school, the view from the window from the back seat. The houses and the ground and sky blurring together creates an unreal effect, and reminds of of something you might see in a dream.

The distinct and delicate sound of the music box plays as the ballerina inside twirls slowly to match the serene tune. A mechanical whirring sound can be heard just under the music. Outside of the music box depicts graceful long-legged ballerinas performing what appears to be 2 FEBRUARY 2016

FEBRUARY 2016

The blinding winter sun situated between two grand trees located in the West High courtyard spreads its feeble warmth to those below, and makes the harsh winter weather slightly more bearable.

Light

The view of an early morning sky on a warmer winter day from my house’s driveway. The faintest hint of the day’s sun sends its rays across our silent and still neighborhood, signaling the beginning of a new day, tinging the clouds with hints of orange and pink.

A bike rests on the bike racks in front of West High’s Ninth Grade Center in direct afternoon sunlight, casting its shadow neatly onto the icy snow beneath it. More bikes are propped in the iron holders off to this one’s left.

The outline of my shadow reflected on a set of stairs behind a large window where the light hits the heaviest in the early afternoon. The sun is as warm as it looks.

In the middle of an orchestra class when the second violins are taking a brief break in playing an orchestra concerto. The many paged music is yellowing but soft.

Aperture At newly opened Chinese Restaurant Minghin in Naperville, a lunch dessert dish awaits on a rotating middle. The final part of my meal, these warm, sweet treats are perfect for a cold day in Illinois. FEBRUARY 2016 3

Samalya Thenuwara ’18 and my shadow in the West High courtyard in bright light. The cement path is wet and the imprints of wet shoes and scuff marks from the courtyard shortcut users remain in the afternoon sun.

Free-Form An American flag in front of one of West High’s many enterances into the school building. It is fluttering lanquidly in the frigid wind, surrounded by a pile of snow a few days old.
