FRAMING. Above, Sandrah Ochola ‘19 preforms a Scorpion in a window frame creating a silhouette around her stretching body. On the right, the sun is setting and a door frames the streetlight downtown.

Shutter Speed Above, the Pacific Ocean waters crash on the beaches of California, creating small splashes of water caught by the camera. The camera had a few water splashes after, but it was worth it to stop the motion of the water below. To the direct right, Jada Dachtler ‘22 kicks the ball in an indoor soccer tournament, the slightly slower shutter speed allows you to see the movement from her foot, nearly connecting to the ball To the far right, a slow shutter speed allows the trails of lights from the cars in downtown Iowa City, a parking garage gives the perfect view of the rushing cars below. Although it was barely ten degrees, the end results were worth it. 6 FEBRUARY 2016

To the left, Sofia Perez ‘17 and Thomas Gumpper ‘16 perform in SPIT at West High, the low light of the theatre forced a high ISO, the show was amazing by the way. In the top left, Briar Martin ‘24 poses with her hermit crab, Peanut. She refused to take family photos unless one of her three crabs got to join in on the fun. To the top right, a man looks at records in the background in a old antique shop in downtown Iowa City.

Portraits Above, Kiah Martin ‘19, poses in front of the sunset, giving her beautiful back light that creates a golden glow. We explored the country roads repeatedly trying to find the perfect spot, eventually, as you can see, we did. To the right, Kim, Briar ‘24, Willa ‘22, and Kiah ‘19 Martin are caught laughing during family photos. Briar had made a face at me while her family thought she was smiling big, she turned to show her the girls in her family and they all found it amusing, as I did.

Above I found an old truck on my grandparents farm, the doors were almost gone and the red was rusting pretty noticeably. The windows had been cracked many years ago by some grand kids throwing rocks that should have stayed on the ground. To the left, Kiah Martin ‘19 searches for records to fill her room with. In the top right, one of my families favorite ornaments hang with a small snowman peeking around the edge.

Light
Above, Avery Lawler ‘19 poses in the summer downtown as the light casts a beautiful shadow over her body and eyes. Her eyes are trained on the harsh setting sun, and the sun is creating a beautiful pattern along her body. To the top right, the sun is setting over the Education Building in downtown Iowa City. The position and focus of the camera gave the sun a ‘ray’ flare effect. To the direct right, the sun sets behind downtown buildings creating a silhouette over each of the towers.

Perspective On the left, I got to the ground to show the usually unseen side of the flowers, although it was close to dying, the colors are still vibrant and the flower is still beautiful. Up on the left I got a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge as the tour bus passed under while in California. While most photos of the famous bridge are from the few of nearby mountains, this gives an alternate perspective from below. To the top, Kiah Martins reflection gives a good perspective from behind. Photography Kiah Martin ‘19 and I were walking downtown, trying to find new inspiration and the man to the left stopped us. He smiled and waited for a little bit, then asked if I would take his picture, that he wouldn’t charge me anything. He then stuck his hand out, smiled, and said cheese. To the bottom left, a young child was crying after leaving the Englert. Below, the cigarettes surrounding the ‘No Smoking’ sign was too ironic to miss.
