IT’S PAYBACK TIME: WWE PAYBACK 2017 BY MIKAIL SYED
Several wrestlers competed for the annual Payback event in the World Wrestling Entertainment on April 30, 2017. The previous wrestling event, Wrestlemania 31, featured several wrestlers pit against each other to claim a trophy. Wrestlemania also was notable for the retirement of WWE Superstar The Undertaker, who had been in the ring for almost thirty years. Payback, for those that do not follow WWE, is the event that follows up to Wrestlemania to give specific wrestlers another chance to battle their rivals in the ring. To explain the WWE for those who may not follow it, it is basically a giant cube sticking out of the ground with three giant strings (sometimes referred to altogether as a ladder) on every side and a corner that wrestlers can use to their advantage. Essentially Iin wrestling you can battle however you want (despite this, there are specific ways that professionals like to use, like suplexes). The things that you do need to do would be pinning and submitting. Basically how WWE wrestlers wrestle is that they beat up the other guy and make them very tired and then pin or submit them to win the match. If the opponent is still down after the pin (which is a quick 3 count) then they lose. The same goes if the opponent is locked into a submission and cannot escape, they “submit” and lose. Tag team is when two teams of two wrestle one on one and can tag their teammate into the match. In the case of an elimination tag team, when one man gets out of the match in any way, only their partner can save the team and defeat the others. Despite this, there are two other ways to lose as well; disqualification and countout. Wrestlers can wrestle outside the ring, however, there is a major risk involved; the referee starts counting to 10, and if any wrestlers are out of the ring by the time the count is uphe counts to 10, they lose the match. Disqualification can happen in many ways. If a wrestler continually beats up a referee, he is disqualified, and loses. Another way that disqualification can take place is if the wrestler uses an outside item continually (such as a chair). They are technically allowed to use it, but they are warned by the referee, and if they continue to use it, they lose. There are many ways that wrestlers wrestle, and it can be anytime., For example, like once a wrestler was attacked by another during an interview, and Booker T and Stone Cold Steve Austin once dueled in a supermarket where Booker T was shoved all the way at the end of the supply aisle in a shopping cart. Also, every wrestler has a unique introduction with music, a video, a theme, and a dance. The only time an entrance is the same for two is if they are a well known tag team.
So let’s get to the results; there was one wrestling match in the pre-show, where Enzo Amore and Big Cass fought Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in a wrestling match. In this type of match, only one wrestler has to be pinned for a whole team to be issued the win or loss. To make a long story short, the end result had Enzo Amore and Luke Gallows in the ring together. With a roll up pin, Enzo Amore was successfully able to pin down Luke Gallows for the three count. Because Enzo Amore was able to pin Luke Gallows, he and Big Cass won the match and were finished with their battle. In Payback, it does not work like a tournament. Instead, once a wrestler has beaten the other wrestler in a match, they are done for the rest of the event.
The next event was the event that many people were waiting for. Kevin Owens, at Wrestlemania 33, defeated the current champion Chris Jericho for the title. This time, Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho battled another time in Chris Jericho’s hope to defeat Kevin Owens and exact revenge. Chris Jericho was on the Raw brand, or “faction,” and if Chris Jericho were to win the title, he would be transferred to the SmackDown brand. Towards the end, when both Owens and Jericho were tired and almost beat, Kevin Owens attempted to use the Pop Up Powerbomb on Chris Jericho. However, this failed, and Kevin Owens soon realized he was trapped. Chris Jericho had used the Walls of Jericho and locked Kevin Owens into a submission. Owens could not break the hold, and submit, giving Jericho the win. As a result, Jericho got his revenge and was also transferred to SmackDown. Next, Neville faced Austin Aries. This match was relatively short, because the match was stopped early. When Austin Aries was preparing a huge attack, Neville tried to defend himself, but grabbed the referee’s shirt, resulting in disqualification. As a result, Austin Aries won the match, but he did not get the title of WWE Cruiserweight Champion. Afterwards, Jeff and Matt Hardy faced Cesaro and Sheamus. The four dueled until Sheamus realized he was pinning the wrong man. This allowed Jeff, the man Sheamus was supposed to be battling, to grab Sheamus and pin him. Sheamus did not break out in time, and as a result, lost the match. Cesaro and Sheamus assaulted the two afterwards, which sparked bad blood between the two. In the only women’s battle for the Raw Women’s Championship, Bayley, the current champion, fought Alexa Bliss to keep the title. Alexa Bliss used the Snap DDT, first invented by Jake “The Snake” Roberts, on Bayley to win her very first Raw Women’s Championship. She became the first woman to win both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championship. Randy Orton fought Bray Wyatt in the House of Horrors, where only pin, submission, or forfeit can cause someone to win or lose. Randy Orton got into the house where Bray Wyatt attacked him. An attack spewed all over the house, where the two finally got into the kitchen. Wyatt threw a refrigerator on Randy Orton, stunning him for a long time. Wyatt broke out of the house, stole Orton’s limousine and drove to the WWE arena. Wyatt got to the arena and did his entrance, but Randy Orton ran in and attacked Bray Wyatt from behind. Orton tried to attack Wyatt, but was overwhelmed by the Singh Brothers and Jinder Mahal. Wyatt then finished Orton off and won the match. While the Wyatt-Orton feud was happening, Seth Rollins (from Davenport, Iowa) and Samoa Joe faced off in a wrestling match. Rollins countered Samoa Joe’s main attack, and rolled into a pin. The pin lasted for the three-count, resulting in a win for Rollins, and the first defeat for Samoa Joe since he was added to the main roster.
In the main event, Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman followed a heavily contested battle. Reigns was fighting a new man since he defeated the Undertaker, who ended up retiring. Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman used several signature attacks on each other, but only Strowman’s Running Powerslam was enough to finish the battle. Strowman ended up defeating Reigns, with Reigns hung on the corner and Strowman standing tall and celebrating his victory.
Payback was an event that caused major surprises everywhere, and showed that just because you beat a guy does not necessarily mean you are better than them. It also was a great place to start for anyone not really following the sport. Also, this event changed careers for many people, like Samoa Joe, who has been defeated for the first time, and Chris Jericho, who now is on the SmackDown brand and goodbyes the Raw brand. However, we can only guess what will happen next time on NXT TakeOver: Chicago...
WHY A NUCLEAR WAR COULD BECOME REALITY BY MIKAIL SYED
Bordering China and relatively close to Japan, there lay two countries recognized by many people. These two countries together would form “Korea” should it exist. Currently, the two countries are hostile towards one another and seek to take over the other. One of these countries is South Korea, a place with advanced technology, strong-U.S. relations, democratic government, and where people are treated with respect. The other country is called North Korea, and it is more of a dreadful place when compared to South Korea. North Korea is a place that uses energy minimally, violates human rights, communist government, and has very hostile relations with the United States. Recently, North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has been annoying the crap out of the United States with bomb threats. If you look up “North Korea,” you are very likely to find loads of articles where they threaten war against the United States. The United States has been asking China, a key factor between both North Korea and the United States, to help them out, and at the current moment the United States is successful in convincing them. The question is: will a war break out between the United States and North Korea? We’ll answer that as we go.
Let’s take a moment to talk about the history of North and South Korea and what life is like there. Both Korean countries were originally the land of Japan, but Japan later annexed the two countries. Henceforth,The two countries, known as North and South Korea, they have been fighting a war since they have been annexed. One of these wars was the Korean War, but once that war ended the two countries have been less physical towards one another, because the two countries made a truce to be militarily peaceful, but have bitter relations nonetheless. South Korea was a democratic country, while North Korea was a communist country. During the At the same time that the Cold War was happening, the Korean War was one of the United States’ major steps towards ridding communism, which was their goal throughout the Cold War. After the Korean War, both countries have been fighting a non-physical war with both sides having support from allies. North and South Koreans alike did labor work for Japan for a while, which may have explained why North Korea and Japan have a bitter relationship. South Korea and Japan, however, have great diplomatic relationships and are also both allies with the United States, despite the labor South Korea had to go through. Communism and democracy have been major differences of the two countries which cite how they are at war together.
OPINION
Life at North Korea is very poor. North Korea has been called one of the most dreadful countries to live in. If you visit North Korea, the government is already suspicious of who you are and will keep a very close eye on you. You are accompanied by guides who take you on a tour throughout your entire trip. The problem is, you can only go to where the guides take you. If there is a place you would likewant to go, but it is not already a part of the tour, you have to require government permission. If you end up going there and get caught, you face the near certainty of being executed and killed. Human rights in North Korea are extremely limited, and this includes execution as a result of freedom of speech or religion. North Korea is an atheist country where public religion is barren, and you worship the deceased leaders of North Korea, Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-il, as if they are gods. You also bow to Kim Jong-un, the current leader, if you see him. Even visitors have to bow and pray for the deceased leaders as well, whether they have a religion or not. There are also pictures of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-il in every North Korean home to bow down to. You have to obey everything the government tells you to do, which include following the leader, since the penalty may result in execution. things like not even thinking against the leader, and if you do not, you are faced with the threat of execution. North Korea also does not feed any people, which results in North Koreans being very thin, and actual food is very rare to find. There is a lot of irony with that, however, because many consider the North Korean Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un, to be very fat. It’s possible that all of North Korea’s food goes to him. In North Korea, no one, aside from the Supreme Leader himself, is safe from execution... literally! Kim Jong-un has executed government officials and even family members for not doing what he says or not living up to his expectations. This is different when considering the United States is opposite. The United States has a capital punishment, or death penalty, but is not usually issued unless extreme conditions are met. In the United States, the punishment for crime, or going against the government, is a trip to prison, where you are forced labor until you are released, and you eat rotten food. It sounds pretty bad, but it is better than death! The United States has a democratic government, which means you have the freedom of speech and freedom of religion. You can be of any religion and nothing crime-related happens to you. You also do not need to treat your leaders like gods, but you can if you want to. In the United States, there is a freedom of speech. This means that if anyone wants to speak against authorities or religion or really anything, they are by all means allowed to. In the United States, almost everyone has a right to food unless they can’t buy it,and the exception would be assisted by charities but there are charities in the United States for those people anyway, and that case is very rare. If you follow the very lenient rules of the United States, you have the right to a very good life.
SUPREME LEADER KIM JONG-UIN OF NORTH KOREA
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP OF THE UNITED STATES
PRESIDENT XI JINPING OF CHINA
South Korea is almost the complete opposite of North Korea(...not just in the name, but also in life). South Korea has a democratic government, much like the United States. Because of that, they have a similar lifestylemuch the same life as people in the United States. South Korea, in terms of quality, also exceeds North Korea. Only Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, really uses energy at night, and otherwise at night North Korea looks like a desert. South Korea uses a lot of energy, at night and during the day, at least showing some signs of life. South Korea has a great human rights record, better than the United States, as there is not a capital punishment. There is also the freedom of speech and religion, and again peopleyou do not worship theiryour leader and, like the United States, there is a president that can be impeached and removed if guilty. There is a right to food in South Korea, with no one necessarily starving. Refugees from North Korea, though it’s hard to leave the country, go to South Korea and have a typically better life from that point forward. The one thing South Korea lacks when compared to North Korea is the fact that North Korea possesses nuclear weapons while South Korea does not. South Korea is allies with the United States and Japan. The current tensions with North Korea are tensions to be concerned with. When Barack Obama left office in 2017, he warned President-elect Donald Trump that North Korea would be his “most urgent” problem. North Korea has been making frequent threats with its nuclear weapons if the United States takes action against them. Meanwhile, they have also been testing nuclear weapons far more often than before. China started to go towards the United States in helping them with the North Korea problem. The likely outcome of a war is very high now, and we will most likely go into a war. When the United States bombed Syria, many countries both welcomed orand condemned the attacks and worseninged relations with many countries, most notably being Russia. According to CNN’s report on a North Korean missile launch, North Korea tested anThese photos of former Supreme Leaders Kim other nuclear weapon, but it failed. More importantly, they broke a lot of Il-Sung (left) and Kim Jong-il (right) are present in almost every North Korean home. pressure from other countries, including China and the United States, to not fire another missile. Because they upset these many countries, with some of them having the best militaries in the world, they might end up causing a war. On independent.co.uk, President Trump stated he won’t be happy if North Korea conducts a missile test, but he is unsure if that will result in military action. Still, the chances of a war are rising and a future nuclear war is becoming more and more evident. Chris Kim ‘20 said that while he views North Korea negatively, he doubts they will start a war despite their possession of nuclear weapons. “North Korea’s economy is really bad, and it is far worse than that of the United States’ economy,” Kim said. He also said that China would not help the United States. “They have previous negotiations and alliances with North Korea,” Kim said. Kim also believes that Trump cannot solve the current North Korea tension. Will a war start? Most likely. But from what we can do, we can only hope for the best. However, we cannot just back down from the situation, as North Korea is targeting us. North Korea also stated an attack could happen at any moment, and if we do back down, we could be more susceptible to nuclear weapons. This is putting the United States at a crisis, and either we can solve the problem with diplomacy, or we can go to war. The war seems more likely than ever. Diplomacy will not work as this point, as tensions have risen too far. So if there is anything that is likely to happen in the future regarding foreign policy, it will probably be a future nuclear war that may be our military’s biggest challenge in history.

WHO’S WINNING IT? BY AARON FENNELL-CHAMETZKY
I know, I know. The NBA Playoffs are in full swing right now and are really exciting. Wizards-Celtics, Spurs-Rockets- two amazing series out right now (Tony Parker’s injury hurts San Antonio a ton). In the world of hockey, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are getting intense. I don’t watch much NHL, personally, but for Canadians it must be great! Even through playoff games are better than regular season games, the MLB season seems to be ignored a bit as of late. Maybe it’s because the Chicago Cubs, baseball’s most marketable team, are sitting with the same record as the Cincinnati Reds. Maybe? Or it’s because young people feel that the game is “boring” and “too slow.” I’m not one of those people, by the way. So, here is my list of the top ten teams mostly likely to win the World Series in November after a little over a month of play into the 2017 season. Cubs: They’re only one game above .500; remember, two years ago through 31 games, Chicago was one game above .500 and finished with 97 wins. My point is- you never know. It is far too early to give up on this young and talented squad.
Nationals- Bryce Harper is having an MVP season and the pitching is top-notch. Ryan Zimmerman, a 32-year-old, is in the middle of a breakout year!
Indians- Jose Ramirez is continuing his steady improvement and Francisco Lindor is solidifying himself as one of the game’s best.
Orioles- Although Manny Machado isn’t as good as we’d expect, the team is doing fine and keeps winning ballgames. Dylan Bundy, the team’s ace, is 5-1 by the way.
Astros- The pitching been really good, led by Dallas Keuchel. He is 5-0 right now with an ERA of 1.88.
Rockies- Nolan Arenado and the team’s batters are on fire like always. The team is also 11-5 on the road, in case you wanted something to show how good they are.
Yankees- Missing Gary Sanchez has helped the team somehow and they rank in the top ten for pitching, fielding, and batting. Rightfielder Aaron Judge is building a strong Rookie of the Year case (although Andrew Benintendi of Boston might have something to say about it).
Red Sox- Chris Sale is exactly what the Sox wanted: a Cy Young contender who racks up the strikeouts. A young core led by MVP runner-up Mookie Betts, shortstop Xander Boegarts, and Benintendi will be in the running for the World Series for a very long time.
Dodgers- With five wins and 53 strikeouts, 2014 NL MVP Clayton Kershaw is pitching phenomenally. They were off to a slow start but are now showing everyone that they are true contenders (or pseudo-contenders like their Los Angeles.
Cardinals- Veteran standbys Matt Carpenter and Catcher Yadier Molina are producing at a star level yet again. Currently, they have a better record than their chief rival, the Cubs (also, 2016 All Star Dexter Fowler, a starter on last year’s World Series champions, is playing.
Sorry if I left out your favorite team but the MLB season is 162 games and we’re hardly one fifth of the way in. Overall, I think that it would be good for the game of baseball if the Yankees and Cubs met each other because they are two youthful teams in huge markets. Anyway, an awesome season is unfolding and the World Series picture will only get clearer.
MOVIES TO WATCH FOR SUMMER 2017 BY AARON FENNELL-CHAMETZKY
Is there a better feeling? You wait patiently in line at the West High textbook checkout room as you are about to take a huge burden off of yourself. So many sleepless nights and anxiety pills… finally, you won’t have to worry about anything (except how to best use the time that we call Summer Break). Now you’re panicked; you don’t know what to do with all that time! No AP tests, useless formulas, and photosynthesis charts to keep you occupied. Well, luckily, summer is when all the big awesome explosion movies come out. Seems fun, right? In this article, I’ll give my top movies of summer ‘17 that need to be watched.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2- Releasing on May 4, this technically isn’t the summer although it is likely to stick around in theaters until June due to it being awesome and having a fire soundtrack. Seriously, if you think a mix with Fleetwood Mac, Parliament, and freaking George Harrison (from the Beatles) is great, this movie will bring nostalgia and excitement to you immediately.
Spider-Man Homecoming- Swinging into theaters on July 5, this reboot of the Spider-Man story looks really fresh! Instead of the God-awful Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, this time we have a younger man in Tom Holland. Featured briefly in last year’s Captain América: Civil War, everybody knows he’s ready to Make Spider-Man Great Again!
Dunkirk- For people who are not into the superhero genre that is taking over this summer, or just want to see a good movie, this film will show three perspectives of a WWII evacuation in 1940. Featuring an all-star cast including Tom Hardy (who starred in director Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises as Bane), Mark Rylance (known for playing Rudolf Abel in 2015’s Bridge of Spies), and Kenneth Branagh (amazing performance in Henry V from 1989 as King Henry).
Wonder Woman- So far, the DC Extended Universe has gotten off to a rocky start. Man of Steel, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad- all of them were duds. Hopefully, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine can bring DC back to the glory days of the Dark Knight Trilogy and the Superman series.
Detroit and Baywatch- Two completely different movies, both of which I don’t know if I’ll get around to watching. Baywatch is based off of the 90s show starring David Hasselhoff, but this time it has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Detroit is a historical film about the 12th Street riot in 1967 starring John Boyega (Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon in Captain América: Civil War).
NEW SCHOOL, NEW ACHIEVEMENTS Next year, there will no longer be two high schools in the Iowa City Community School District, ending the near fifty year streak of only two high schools. As fortunate as it is, one of them is not being demolished. Instead, there will be a third high school in the Iowa City Community School District as a result of overpacked students in the other two schools. Because of this, half of the West High School population (excluding seniors) are heading their way towards a new high school, and a new school life in general.
As the 2016-2017 school year progresses, Liberty High has slowly been releasing new information regarding their teachers, whether they are new or transferring from other schools, and designs and sports. The school is set to look more advanced and technological, and “shiny. The design prototypes include the main hall, which is a large room with signs pointing to where math, science, social studies, auditorium, etc. are, making Liberty High more organized by not throwing rooms at people. The cafeteria is also not its own separate room, going with the hallways as well. So exactly what types of people are staying at West High this year or going to a new school? Almost all former Northwest students, regardless of elementary school background, are staying at West, aside from requests of changes. The only exception to this are Northwest students who had previously went to Kirkwood. These students are going to Liberty to keep an equal sense of diversity and not keep one race particularly dominant. Former Southeast students have a different story. Depending on where they live, former Southeast people are mixed on where they might go next year. North Central has a sharp contrast to Northwest, however. Former North Central students are almost of no doubt going to Liberty, unless they live relatively closer to West or live outside of North Liberty. Aside from school directory, almost every high school student who lives in North Liberty has to go to Liberty High School.
Liberty High School was originally to have North Central be a feeder school, but this was overturned about a year later, so even some North Central students will remain at West High for the rest of their high school careers.
Liberty High offers the same athletics as the other two schools. This includes basketball, soccer, wrestling, volleyball, etc., with sports teams already created for students going to Liberty High. Because of this, West High had essentially had two teams with different games, similar to teams in middle school, one for Liberty and one for West, in almost every sport that supported teams. For example, West teams might fight City in basketball, while at the same time Liberty goes to Cedar Rapids Washington to play, but they practice in the same giant gym that belongs to West Senior High School. Of the many people going to Liberty, several say they are excited to go, but have not seen the design yet. Liberty High will be a uniting school that will bring people of different backgrounds together, like City and West have achieved, and many people will meet again, with both familiar and new faces, and enjoy every second at Liberty...including when they take AP and ACT tests. This may explain why Liberty High is a very anticipated school and also creates breathing room for staff. Liberty High thus creates a sense of organization.
Liberty High will be the first high school in the Iowa City Community School District to be located in Coralville. After several high school students living in Coralville had no convenience of going to a school near them, and possibly sleep more, their dream has now officially come true. There is now a school they can reach easily and allows for extra time and curriculars without having anything seriously bad happen.
All in all, Liberty High School will unite people of different backgrounds and elementary school origins, and look appealing to all people in terms of design. It will set the background of several fields, such as any sports students are interested, math, science, or extracurriculars such as debate, and obviously...journalism! Liberty High School is the kind of school that meets all expectations and also remove the problem of overflowing students at school. And for those reasons, Liberty High School is and should be well anticipated to be a great addition to the Iowa City Community School District.
HUMANS OF WEST HIGH AND O.J. SIMPSON BY AARON FENNELL-CHAMETZKY
After nine long years of sitting around and aging, O.J. Simpson could finally get on parole. For those of you who don’t know who O.J. is, he was one of the greatest running backs in NFL history who played for a solid decade (1969-79) and won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1973 while playing for the Buffalo Bills. Nicknamed “The Juice,” Simpson became one of the most popular athletes in the United States and was a celebrity, playing parts in movies such as The Towering Inferno from 1974 and The Naked Gun from 1988, as well as its two sequels. In 1994, his career took a downturn as O.J. was caught by police fleeing from the murder scene of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. The next year, he was put on the “Trial of the Century,” followed by millions of people around the world. Simpson’s defense team, the “Dream Team,” was led by Johnnie Cochran and Robert Kardashian (father to Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, and Rob); the prosecution was led by Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden. On October 3, 1995, Simpson was found innocent of murder after eleven months of bitter debate. The next decade saw O.J. venture into reality TV with the prank However, in 2008, O.J. went to jail for robbery. Since this is the year O.J. can get out of prison, a recent storm has been brewing about him and the trial. Last year alone three specials about Simpson on TV- O.J. Simpson Trial: The Real Story, O.J.: Made in America, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Made in America went on to win Best Documentary at the Academy Awards earlier this year. Ziad Hasabrabu, a freshman at West High School, said, “I liked it (Made in America) because it showed what inside a courtroom is really like and had the hard process of deciding on a verdict featured.” On the subject of whether O.J. should be released from jail, Hasabrabu ‘20 said, “Yeah, I think he should be. American’s tax money is being wasted on people like O.J. who we don’t even know; it’s time that he should get out.” Demetrick Byars, ‘20, agrees with Hasabrabu. “You know, everybody deserves a second chance.” A second chance.
