Camryn Benge ‘18, Nathan Dill ‘18, Anna Buckingham ‘18, Joe Briddle ‘18, and Brittan Gregoire ‘18 bounce around at Airfx. It’s too hot to be outside and staying home is too boring. Here’s a solution! Get together a group of friends and head to Airfx. There you can have fun jumping on the trampolines and playing games. You will have a blast, no doubt.

What’s better than a break from the sun for a shopping day? Spend some time at the Coral Ridge Mall with friends, or go up to Jordan Creek in Des Moines. When walking gets tiring take a break to eat see a new movie at the theaters. This is a great way to take a day off and relax a little.

3.

At the rec downtown there are many activities to do. Even many you could actually do outside. The rec has an amazing rock wall and pool that has a whirlpool and a rockwall in the pool. And don’t forget about the steam room. If you want to get a little exercise there is exercise equipment. They have it all! And don’t forget to treat yourself to a smoothie on your way out.

4.

When it is too hot to handle and you don’t feel like going anywhere either, friendship bracelets are a great option to free you from boredom. Not only can you find countless ways to make them, but you can make them with friends or give them as gifts. Who doesn’t love wearing some cute and colorful bracelets in the summer?

Sidewalk Talk: What is your favorite summer activity? Hannah Krupp: My favorite inside summer activity is watching movies and TV series, also not having to do homework. Sidewalk Talk: How do you cool off in the summer? HK: I cool off by going to the pool or the Reservoir to swim. Sidewalk Talk: What do you think the best thing to do indoor is? HK: Hangout with friends and make some food. WSSPAPER.COM JUNE 2015 ENTERTAINMENT 3

“Summer Body”?

We’re all a little insecure, especially when it comes to summer and the time to start wearing swimsuits. You should feel confident with your body image and flaunt your figure. There is no need to have the so called “perfect body”, but there is a need to love yourself. Everyone is beautiful no matter what shape or size and society is too caught up in “perfection.”. We need to remember that we’re all different and don’t need to lose 20 pounds, go on a diet, or get a new makeover to better our body image. Loving yourself and your body is important. Feeling confident is a mental thing, so stop comparing yourself to others and embrace your body.

Karli When you think of summer, you think hot - which means wearing less clothes. Whether it be a swimsuit or a crop top, people think about their weight. Society has put a standard in our heads on how someone should look in a swimsuit, but don’t mind what the scale and magazines say, just make sure you feel good. If you don’t feel comfortable, maybe try some things that will make you feel better about yourself. Not necessarily dieting, but if you aren’t happy with the way you look - you have the power to change it. Maybe try going on a bike ride since the weather is nicer or even try replacing your food habits with a healthier substitution. For example, instead of triple fudge brownies, try frozen yogurt bites (see pages 10-11). However, just make sure you are doing it for yourself and not anyone else because you are you and your happiness comes from within.

Ellie It’s important, especially with young teenage girls, to learn to embrace their figure. Society has a huge impact on most young girls, especially through social media. They log onto their social media accounts and the first thing they see is a supermodel wearing a size 00. Maybe they hear a song on the radio about how they are supposed to look. It’s important, especially in summer, that everyone remembers it’s fine not to be stick-thin as long as you feel confident in your appearance and feel beautiful.

Elle The minute you type summer body into google, the suggestions to keep typing include: diet, workout, challenge, tumblr, and workout plan. Many social media sites or inspiration sites are advertising ways to get ‘the perfect summer body’ but is that really what summer is all about? Putting on a swim suit may make someone feel very self-conscious and may make others feel very confident. But remember, when you’re at the pool enjoy the quality time with your friends and don’t worry about what others think. Don’t be hard on yourself because everyone is different and everyone has something that makes them feel insecure. You’re not alone in feeling this way, so rock out and be unique. Show confidence in your originality and it will bring you happiness. 3 OPINION MAY 2015 WSSPAPER.COM

hris Mott ‘18 has grown up around hunting. Hunting has become a frequent tradition and has brought his family closer together throughout the years. “We’ve traveled to hunt before, we go to New York and my dad, brother, and I become closer. It’s good bonding time with each other,” said Mott ‘18. The outdoors have become a place Mott likes to spend a lot of time. Since a young age, he has been outdoorsy. Spending time playing with the neighbors or in the woods. Iowa provides all four seasons which allows a change up of outside activities. “My favorite season is winter because I like to ski and sled in the snow.” said Mott ‘18. You can find Mott spending leisure time outdoors during any weather. Weather can affect mood too. Rain can relax and sun can brighten your attitude. Mott admits his liking of rain for relaxation. He loves every outdoor activity from Ziplining in forests of Honduras to deer hunting in New York. Mott once captioned a photo,”Nothin’ better than a night hunt.” Always up for an adventure, always having fun outside. Life is exciting outdoor, you just have to get out and explore.

Red, White, and Blue drink

Ingredients: Cranberry Juice Blue Gatorade Sierra Mist Ice cubes Directions: 1. Fill a drinking glass up with ice. 2. Pour cranberry juice into the cup one-third of the way up the cup. 3. Next, pour the Sierra Mist on top of the cranberry juice filling the cup another third. Try pouring this slowly directly on a ice cube to prevent from pouring directly into the juice. If you pour directly on the juice or pour it too fast, it will mix and not stack. 4. Finally, pour the Gatorade into the glass. Follow the same precautions when pouring it into the cup to be positive the liquids will not mix. Enjoy your very festive and patriotic drink.

Gummy Bear Popsicles

Ingredients: Gummy bears Glacier Cherry Gatorade Popsiicles Directions: 1. Drop a few gummy bears into your popsicle mold. 2. Pour the Gatorade into the molds on top of the gummy bears. 3. Freeze your popsicles for about four hours or until they are completely frozen. 4. Once frozen, take your popsicle mold out of the freezer. 5. Run warm water over an individual popsicle mold to help it thaw faster. For a hot summer day, these are the perfect treat. To make it a bit healthier, try using coconut water. 10 ENTERTAINMENT JUNE 2015 WSSPAPER.COM

Watermelon Lemonade:

Ingredients Watermelon Simply lemonade Container/jar Directions 1. Place some watermelon chunks in container where you will hold the lemonade mixture (this is more for presentation and to also enhance the watermelon flavoring). 2. Blend 2 slices of watermelon and a 1 ½ cup of Simply lemonade in a blender. 3. Pour your mixture into a jar or container & you’re ready to serve! This is a great way to have a spin off of the basic lemonade. It is perfect for refreshments at a summer bonfire or pool party. This would also be a great way to have a lemonade stand but watermelon lemonade is less common so more people might be more willing to try it.

Frozen Yogurt Bites

Ingredients: Yogurt Plastic baggie Pan/plate Directions: 1. Put yogurt into plastic bag and cut off a little bit of one corner. 2. Squeeze a penny sized amounts of yogurt on the pan/plate. 3. Freeze for 30-60 minutes. 4. Peel off and enjoy. These are great switch up from the basic yogurt and spoon! Its also great if you’re on the go in the morning and need something mess free. Just make sure you can spare an extra half hour for freezing. WSSPAPER.COM JUNE 2015 SECTION 11

Hosting at a restaurant:

Little did you know, you don’t have to be at least sixteen for every job opportunity. You can be slightly younger to host at a restaurant, and for the most part it is easy work. There is basic work like bringing people to tables, keeping track of reservations, answering phone calls, and cleaning tables if the restaurant gets busy. Simple tasks and helping out can help you earn some extra cash this summer. This is a great job for young workers who can’t wark at some other places because they only higher older employees. It’s a great opportunity to interact with customers too.

ROADTRIP BY ELLIE GRETTER

gretter.ellie.18@icstudents.org

A picture perfect summer usually consists of an awesome road trip. At the same time it’s hard to plan it out just as you imagined . Most importantly, you have to decide where you want to go. Do you want to go to a city? Hit the beach? Or does spending a few days at a waterpark resort sound like a blast? This is your guide to plan the road trip of your dreams. First, the most important part of any road trip is where to go. If you love the city the place that you will be fun is Chicago. “There are about a million reasons I love Chicago. I like the Garrett’s popcorn, shopping, and especially going for volleyball.” said Colby Greene ‘18. If you prefer the mountains and going on hikes anywhere in the Grand Canyon is perfect for you. “I thought it was so beautiful, and it was a great trip and I’m so glad I could spend it with my family!” said Rory Brady ‘16. Another entertaining trip would be to the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. “I like going to the Ozarks because I like waterskiing, boating, and going to the dock restaurants.” said Lauren Schuchard ‘18.

LEWIS: My favorite place to go is to the ocean, although those are the longest rides. ST: What do you dislike about roadtrips?
