A “Cool” Summer Vacation BY EMILY JETTON
Anchorage, Alaska
According to Young, they like going “exotic places” for their summer vacations. “We don’t really go to normal vacation spots,” she claimed. These include Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, England, and France. They have also been to a lot of different national parks, though Young remarked that these “might not be as exciting as the other places.”
As summer approaches, many students will be heading south to warm beaches, or perhaps getting on planes to nice cities. Caroline Young ‘19, however, has very different plans. Young’s sister, who is graduating this year, chose the family’s destination. According to Young, “she had different criteria and different things she wanted to do.” Her suitcase will not be packed with shorts, flip-flops, and bathing suits, but with winter coats, “pretty warm things”, and hiking boots. They are traveling to Alaska. Caroline Caroline Young ‘19 We don’t really go to normal vaction spots, we go to exotic places such as Peru, Mexico, England, [...] Caroline Young ‘19
In August, before the start of school, the Young’s will spend “a very long day” flying 12 hours to get to Alaska. For the two weeks they are there, they plan to visit Denali National Park and the city of Anchorage. Their planned activities include hiking and exploring glaciers, as well as visiting a dog-sledding place to meet the dogs and learn more about the sport. They will be staying in remote lodges. According to Young, this is so they “can just have a good time as a family”. Young self is most looking forward to taking photos. “I bet it’ll be really pretty there,” she said. Traveling is no new experience for the Young family.
ALASKA FACTS Young will no doubt enjoy great seafood-most of America’s salmon, crab, and herring come from Alaska Dog mushing is the official state sport. Alaska is the largest state-twice the size of Texas! Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city

Zootopia review BY EMILY JETTON
Another Disney movie about animals. Wonderful. Actually, Disney’s 2016 release Zootopia presents creatures in a way we never saw in Snow White or Cinderella. In this movie, the animals wear clothes, walk on two feet, and, yes, speak. They are also divided into two groups--predators and prey--which reside in relative peace in a huge metropolis known as Zootopia. Main character Judy Hopp’s story may sound familiar--a girl from a small town (Bunnyburrow, in this case) wants to move to the city to pursue her dreams, while overcoming obstacles fate has thrown at her. Judy’s dream is to become the first rabbit police officer, and she is hindered by the fact that she is a rabbit. Because of her species, she is believed to be “too small” to do her dream job. However, you see her overcome the disadvantage of her height and graduate top of her class at the police academy. She is assigned to Zootopia. Life in the big city as a new police officer isn’t anything like Judy expects. For one thing, on her first day, she is assigned to parking duty, much to her dismay. However, considering the rest of the movie, this may be the best thing that could happen to her. For on this day, she meets a sly fox named Nick Wilde. The next day, she uses his criminal history to blackmail him into helping her on a case she has taken up-investigating the mysterious disappearance of certain predators. While working together, Judy and Nick solve the crime and develop a genuine friendship. They also encounter political corruption, discrimination, and violence. This movie has a wonderful message. It is about following your dreams, and that you can always be more than what society expects you to be. As a rabbit, Judy struggles to be respected as a police officer. As a fox, Nick fights to be seen as something over than a con artist. This is a theme many people can connect to. It also teaches you that there is evil and corruption even in the most unexpected places. Without spoiling anything, I will say that Judy finds herself surprised and betrayed by two leaders whom she respected and thought of as friends. Finally, there is also the theme of how prejudice and discrimination can tear apart a community. Because of an insidious plot, the predators find themselves the targets of suspicion and fear. This affects Zootopia in very negative ways, and nearly destroys the bond between Judy (a prey) and Nick (a predator). Considering the country’s current attitude towards blacks and Muslims, among other minority I believe this movie contains a very serious political undertone. In Zootopia, this problem is solved through encouraging unity and peace. This, not hostility and suspicion, is the course I believe our leaders should be taking to rid America of destructive racism. This is a Disney movie through and through. In addition to the deeper themes-which adults appreciate and kids will understand later, Zootopia contains many instances of light humor. One instance is when, as part of their investigation, Judy and Nick go to the DMV where, much to Judy’s dismay, the workers are all revealed to be sloths (literally). I really respect Disney for making this movie, as it teaches the all-important lesson of looking beneath the surface, something I believe so many Americans have forgotten to do. Yet again, they have created a movie people of all ages will be able to enjoy. Another Disney movie about animals. Wonderful. Must Try popsicles in the summer. Capachino Popsicles
Ingredients: -1 sachet Enrista Cappuccino -1 sachet Enrista strong coffee (or 2 sachets of Cappuccino) -250ml (1 cup) boiling water -60ml (1/4 cup) condensed milk Directions: -Pour all of the above ingredients into a jug and mix to dissolve. You essentially need 1 cup of fairly strong milky coffee. Allow to cool. Pour the mixture into small shot glasses (as I did) or popsicle molds. Place in the freezer to partially set (the time will depend on how big your popsicles are). Remove and top with either fresh whipped cream, or condensed mill (optional) and place a stick in the middle. Return them to the freezer and leave until they are frozen solid. When you are ready to serve, briefly dunk them into a bowl of warm water and pull them out of the molds *if they are sticky, insert a sharp knife down the inner edge to help loosen it. -And or pour the coffee mixture into a freezer proof tray until frozen solid. Using a fork, scrape the ice into small crystal chunks and serve straight away.
Strawberry Popsicles Ingredients: -1 pound strawberries, hulled and halved -2 ½ cups orange juice - the zest of 3 oranges -½ cup agave nectar Directions: - Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Cook the strawberries for 15 minutes. Turn the heat off and, using a hand blender, puree the strawberries. Carefully taste the puree to see if it needs more agave. Pour the mixture in popsicle molds, let it cool completely, and freeze it.

Divide this mixture between the cups, filling 1/3 the way up each cup. Freeze for two hours or until mixture starts to solidify enough to hold an ice pop stick upright. Insert ice pop stick into each cup. Continue to freeze until mixture is completely frozen. - Now pour root beer into the cups, leaving the top 1/3 of the cup empty. Continue to freeze until the root beer is completely frozen. - Make the same mixture as in step 2, and top off the cups with the yogurt mixture. Again, place and freezer until the ice pops are completely

Fold in the whipped cream and cookie chunks (not the crumbs – only the chunks). - Pour mixture into popsicle molds or wax-lined disposable cups. Strawberry and Lemonade Popsicles
Ingredients: For the Lemonade Layer: -1 1/3 cups of lowfat yogurt, plain or vanilla -1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice -5 tbsp of sugar For the Strawberry Layer: -1 pint of strawberries, cored and quartered -1/4 cup of sugar -2 tablespoons of water -1 teaspoon of lemon juice -1 cup of plain yogurt Directions: -First, make the lemonade layer mixture. Heat the lemon juice in a small, microwaveable bowl for around 45 seconds and dissolve all the sugar into it. Pour this mixture into a medium bowl with the yogurt and whisk until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to assemble popsicles. -Make strawberry layer mixture. Place the strawberries, water, and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a bowl. Simmer for around five minutes until the strawberries are soft. Pour this mixture and the lemon juice into a food processor and pulse until almost pureed, but not liquefied. Chill in the refrigerator until cool, and then whisk the yogurt into the strawberry mixture until well combined. -Assemble the popsicles. Use a teaspoon or tablespoon to carefully spoon alternating layers of lemon and strawberry mixture into your molds. If you typically like your lemonade more sweet than tart, use more strawberry layers than lemon. If you prefer more tart than sweet, use more lemon layers than strawberry. Freeze overnight. To unmold, dip molds into warm water and gently pull popsicles out. Serve immediately.
Bluberry and Pomegranate Popsicles Ingredients: -1 (8 oz.) bottle of pomegranate juice. -1 pint of fresh blueberries, plus some extras for “garnish” if you’d like. -1 (6 oz.) container Greek yogurt. Directions: -Combine all ingredients in a blender, and pulse until combined. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds or Dixie cups, add popsicle sticks (and some extra berries for “garnish” if you’d like), and then freeze until frozen. -If they do start to fall over, just cut a small slit in a square of wax paper, thread the popsicle stick through it, and then place on top of the Dixie cup. Remove wax paper once the popsicles are frozen.
