ADVICE
SHOULDI GOFOR IT? Everyone’s got their crushes, their first love and their questions.
BY JANAYA BUNS Most high schoolers everywhere can relate in one way or another, whether it be favorite classes, hobbies or what high schoolers are notorious for having, crushes. Ranging from the simple “he’s cute” to the “her smile makes my day one hundred times better” and all the way to “guys I may just be going crazy, but I think I’m in love.” When it comes to crushes anything can happen, and if you’re like most teenagers who aren’t sure of what they want to do or can’t imagine life after graduation, the idea of taking the risk to make a move, heartbreak, or even succeeding and being in a relationship can be quite the daunting task. But when it comes down to it, you’re not alone. Those butterflies in your stomach, crazy dreams of a happy relationship, and racing pulse is normal. You may hate these feelings or they may just be leaving you wondering, “Why do I have to feel this way?” Well have no fear, the answer to this complex feeling is rather simple: the reason being that you are human and not to mention a teenager! Don’t think of your first crush or your millionth crush as pointless or awful. Instead view each crush as a building block as you go along your journey of self discovery. You may be thinking that because your crush is a good friend you have no chance or the complete opposite, you may know nothing about your crush. These sometimes agonizing feelings aren’t the end, they’re just another step down the road. Now here’s the real question, should you go for it? It depends on the situation, say for example; you find that you rather fancy a classmate that you have never really conversed with and just want to talk to them, well here are some things that you can do; Message them on facebook or Instagram and ask about an assignment, send them a friend request, discuss the class, or just ask them to have lunch together sometime. DESIGN BY SHARON AMOUZOU
Remember, relationships or relationship development is like high school itself; time flies so savor the development. And if there is no development in the relationship you can at least say that you had a good time till the end. And hey, if it doesn’t work out with one person you at least have a world full of possibilities. Another example could be that you’ve fallen for your best friend, now here is where things can get dicey. Here is where the risk game is strong. On one hand you have the risk of friendship endangerment and on the other you have the chance of progression, the chance of becoming something more than friends. In this case it really depends on how big a chance you are willing to take and what all is at stake. If you do go for it great! But remember you may have built this crush up over a long period of time whereas your crush may have not, so take it easy instead of unleashing a tidal wave of pent up forwardness upon your crush. What’s sometimes the best way to go about this is to give subtle hints ( though not too subtle they can’t tell at all) get them thinking about you as something more than a friend. Also don’t do things like give them constant compliments especially if they aren’t genuine. Remember the end goal isn’t to crush your crush in affection. This is a matter of getting the point across to your crush that you like them while being true to you. Because you obviously like your crush for who they are, so wouldn’t you want them to like you for who you are? Another bit of advice, if you find yourself in a position where there is a ‘love’ rival don’t try to show off or to show them up, be the better person, because if you really think about it you both can relate and being a better person has it’s perks. Overall in the end relationship progress and setbacks depend upon situation, risk, chance and most of all you. INTRO.WSSPAPER.COM MAY 2016 ADVICE 3

I’m not a fashionista
“There’s this part of me that thinks oh clothes shouldn’t matter, and then there’s this part of me that likes to embrasse that what I wear does make me feel good.” BY PARIONNA ROBY
“It’s just fun and I think part of it for me is because I didn’t shop when I was little,
it just wasn’t part of my life so there’s times where I feel like I’m making up for that and I really enjoy it,” said by Amy Shoultz, a high school teacher that teaches during 2nd period and a clinical professor at the University of Iowa. Shoultz describe her style as “age appropriate clothing but still not boring...likes color.” Shoultz doesn’t like to wear the stereotypical teacher outfit such as: pants, dull colors, suits, dress shoes, etc. Shoultz outfits are very creative, but not complicated like Ms. Frizzle. Shoultz style is simple, no jewelry, no makeup, does her hair and she is out the door. Favorite color combination? Favorite colors to wear? Shoultz likes to wear a black pencil skirt with a color top. Peripherally likes the top to be short sleeves or no sleeves. “I like the look of my arms,” said Shoultz. Shoultz also likes to wear lots of color. Shoultz enjoys wearing reddish colors in her outfits. “I like to have green in my wardrobe because I work at West.” Did you always have this style when you were young? Shoultz tells us about her memory of buying tennis shoes from Kmart and only owning a few pair of pants and about 3 t-shirts.“When I was young, we just didn’t go buy clothes.” Shoultz said. “We didn’t necessarily have a lot of money or at least I didn’t think so. I just put something on and went to school and did my studies.” How do you get inspired for your style? Where do you usually shop? “What not to wear. I bet I learn a lot from Stacey and Clinton,” said Shoultz. “I like to shop...I really do.” Shoultz likes to go to Dillards, especially when things are on sale. Shoultz usually shops at Von Maur, Dillard’s and Banana Republic. “Just when there are sales...I go straight to the sales!” Do you have any fashion role models? “A teacher who used to work here...Margaret Shullaw. She and I are very good friends and we have very different styles. She will just go online and say ‘oh, I like that’ and just buy it.” Shoultz said. “Her approach to clothing, she’s my role model. So there’s a part of me that likes to embrace that clothes is apart of your identity and there’s apart of me that wants to push against that because I don’t think it should be but at the same time I do find some joy in clothes and I shouldn’t feel like I have to hide that and Mrs. Shullaw is like that and I am really inspired by that. ” 4 PROFILE MAY 2016 INTRO.
