Dawn Fuge, Co-Chair of Perth’s Traders’ Association, on Perth’s unique retail offer

At the heart of Scotland’s road, rail and air transport networks, Perth delivers a superb proposition for investment and business start-ups and relocations. Our thriving and forward-looking city, voted the best place to live in mainland Scotland, offers all manner of benefits for those seeking the perfect place in which to work, live and visit. Characterised by its green spaces, clean air and the pristine waters of the Tay, Perth is a city that offers something different – a creative city with a distinctive retail offer famed for its range of independent outlets. Supported by an increasingly diverse and vibrant city centre events programme, this is a city that offers something for everyone. It’s also a city that is continually looking to the future. Supporting sustainable growth is a strategic focus for the region, ensuring opportunities exist for all, while minimising the impact of that growth on our stunning natural environment. In this latest issue, we look at how Smart City technologies are helping to reduce energy consumption and enable economic growth, while groundbreaking innovations at the Binn Eco Park have the potential to revolutionise how we, as a society, manage and process plastic waste. It’s clear from everything that is going on, that Perth truly is the place.

COLLECTIVE THINKING FOSTERS A SPECIAL COMMUNITY

A POWERFUL COMBINATION OF CLOSE PUBLIC/PRIVATE SECTOR WORKING, INCREASED VISITOR NUMBERS, THE ADOPTION OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY, PUBLIC REALM IMPROVEMENTS AND A YEAR-ROUND EVENTS PROGRAMME IS HELPING TO ENSURE PERTH’S UNIQUE RETAIL SECTOR HAS MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO. As recent news has highlighted, the modern high street – especially large UK multiples – face unprecedented challenges amid shifting consumer trends and business uncertainty. However, according to Dawn Fuge, Co-chair of the Perth Traders’ Association, the city’s distinct character and diverse offering of independent retailers is giving rise to “cautious optimism”. With the September launch of Mi Rewards, the UK’s first smart city rewards programme (see page 4), Perth traders and event organisers will be able to access essential insights into shoppers’ preferences in order to not only encourage local spend, but also inform and improve future city centre events. Dawn, owner of Precious Sparkle, has been involved in Mi Rewards’ development. “What I love is the programme’s simplicity – it potentially covers dozens of local businesses. Because the rewards aren’t linked to one particular business, the programme does not pitch one business against another but rewards customers for shopping with us all. People often come to Perth because they’re seeking something different from cloned high streets.

Mi Rewards means we can all share in and benefit from that special appeal.” As Dawn explains, city centre events remain vital to attracting new shoppers into Perth. “Events can give local traders new ways of engaging with customers – whether that’s through promotions, late night opening or taking up the opportunity to have a market stall. It’s all about getting in the spirit of things, especially as we approach the festive season. “Equally important is the close collaboration we enjoy with the local council, which actively seeks thoughts and opinions from the Perth Traders’ Association in terms of development and when and where events are located. Local councillors, MSPs and MPs attend our meetings and genuinely listen to concerns.” As Dawn says, promoting Perth as a great place to live, work, visit and invest requires the entire community to pull together, which is why a two-way dialogue with the Council is so important. “We’re all in this together.” Dawn continues: “It’s exciting to see investment in the fabric of the city centre coming to fruition and that’s helping to drive up footfall,” adds Dawn. “Marginal gains such as 15 minutes free parking, the roll

out of RingGo pay as you park services and additional parking has certainly helped. But so too will measures to improve active travel and making the city centre more accessible while managing traffic volumes. “Perth is a special place; a city that, due to its strong sense of community, feels like a village. That’s worth celebrating and showcasing.”

SMART THINKING FOR PERTH’S RETAIL SECTOR Mi Rewards, the UK’s first smart city rewards programme, was launched in Perth, in September. Customers earn points by spending money with participating businesses – whether shops, leisure attractions or restaurants – without a need to present a separate physical loyalty card. The points can then be converted into Perth Gift Cards which can be spent back in Perth. The programme is free, and participants will also be offered perks, such as VIP access to events and automatic entry to competitions. Using any existing credit or debit card that customers choose to register online, local spending is tracked securely and automatically, and the anonymous data collected will support the development of a strategy for place-planning in future: it provides clarity on how different events, marketing and planning decisions impact consumer behaviour.

As a straightforward, ‘frictionless’ process, Mi Rewards will help drive loyalty and help Perth’s retailers benefit from the kind of data insights into consumer habits usually only available to their online competitors. Miconex, the Perth-based organisation behind the successful Perth Gift Card, has developed the Mi Rewards programme, working with Perth & Kinross Council and local businesses.

CREATIVE ACCELERATOR ELEVATES BUSINESS PROSPECTS In 2018, as part of the Famous Grouse Ideas Centre initiative, Perth and Kinross Council is working with Elevator, a forward thinking, innovative Social Enterprise that runs business growth accelerators across the North East of Scotland. The first entrants to the 12-week Famous Grouse Ideas Centre Accelerator in March were selected from an initial 127 enquiries, which progressed to around 60 applications before a final group of 14 were chosen and graduated in May. Caryn Gibson, Accelerator Manager for Elevator, says; “the 12-week programme was tailored to inspire a growth mindset with a creative twist, bringing together a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience through specialist workshop providers and

They can also be signposted to two other programmes run in parallel to the Creative Accelerator: Creative Pipeline and Incubator are segmented entrepreneurship programmes, both support creative industries. “The programme changed how I manage my business day-to-day,” confirms Karen Hamilton, a dressmaker who has perfected a 3D-printed lace to create unique wedding dress designs. During the programme, Karen secured the intellectual property for her idea, was awarded an Interface Innovation Voucher and £5,000 in grant-funding; and secured a place pitching for investment at Elevator’s Angel’s Share event. “It has given me confidence and skills that will enable me to make my business idea a reality.”

Perth Food and Drink Park has a new tenant. Local entrepreneur, Praveen Kumar has achieved great success since taking over Tabla, an Indian restaurant in Perth’s city centre, in 2009. Named world cuisine chef of the year in the Scottish Food Awards, Tabla has also been declared the Best Indian Restaurant in Scotland and Takeaway of the Year, and the menu includes the winning dish in the Outstanding Curry Award. Now, Praveen plans for everyone in the UK to be able to enjoy his curries, thanks to a new unit set to open in October. “It’s taken two years to get to this point, with support from Perth & Kinross Council for the factory; and from Interface, the Scottish government programme that

She has been able to help us get the ingredients perfected for food regulations and labelling, such as our vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options.” Praveen’s recipes use locally sourced ingredients. “We work with local farmers for all our fresh vegetables and our poultry, fish and lamb. Those relationships are only possible somewhere like Perth, where you deal personally and can build trust,” says Praveen. “Perth is ideal for road, rail, air and shipping connections,” he adds. The Park is strategically situated just off the Inveralmond Roundabout on the A9, with more than half of Scotland’s population reachable within a 60-minute drive. From a range of 50 options, “any orders made online by 2pm will be cooked and sent by courier, as packs of 12 frozen curry dishes, which can be delivered to any home on the UK mainland before 7pm the next day.” With room at the unit for immediate expansion, Praveen is already in talks with potential commercial customers, including pub chains. The new business has launched with eight staff, but Praveen hopes to scale this quickly over the course of the next year. “We can recruit good staff here, who want to stay with us thanks to the quality of life in Perth.”

As one of the leading food manufacturers in the UK, 2 Sisters Food Group has an ambition to provide healthy, convenient and affordable food to consumers, with poultry a growth market. In June, the firm announced a major investment into its Coupar Angus plant, following support from the governmentbacked Food Processing Marketing and Co-operation Grant Scheme. 2 Sisters will be investing around £3.5m, which will be topped up by the grant to total £5m. The business is doubling cutting capacity in the portions department, creating more than 250 new jobs in the Perthshire town. The funding will support staff development, the purchase of new equipment and underpin the recruitment of the additional workers. Opportunities will be created across all departments and range from production operatives to technical management, in addition to two new engineering apprenticeship positions.

PERTHSHIRE’S VIBRANT ECONOMY Perth & Kinross has been ranked 3rd most successful economy in Scotland in The Vibrant Economy Index, published by Grant Thornton LLP in September 2018. The analysis of economic success maps out places across the UK where people and businesses can flourish. It examines themes – or baskets – such as prosperity; dynamism; inclusion; wellbeing; sustainability and sense of community as defining characterisitics of a healthy regional economy. Using multiple datasets, the Index provides a robust, independent framework to support a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities in a local area. It supports collaboration between citizens, businesses and place-shapers to make their places thrive. The report particularly highlighted Perth & Kinross as an area whose strengths lie in resilience and sustainability, as well as community, trust and belonging. On all other baskets its performance is consistently above the national average.

RECOGNITION FOR CHAMPION OF PERTHSHIRE FARMING Having been honoured with an outstanding achievement award at the annual Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards earlier this summer, local Perthshire farmer, Jim McLaren, remains as committed to the cause of Scottish agriculture as ever.

IT’S A HUGE HONOUR TO RECEIVE RECOGNITION FROM MY PEER GROUP.”

Jim has been farming in the area all his life, overseeing his 900 acre mixed arable and livestock farm near Crieff. Specialising in pedigree simmental cattle, he not only raises his own stock but also has a bull beef finishing operation. The award served as recognition for more than 15 years’ work championing Perthshire and Scottish farming. Jim has served as chair of Quality Meat Scotland, a role he recently stepped down from having held the post since 2011 and, previously, as president of NFU Scotland. “It’s a huge honour to receive recognition from my peer group. We live in a diverse region in terms of its agricultural production: with Highland Perthshire and the uplands north of Crieff, where dedicated, skilled livestock farmers raise high quality cattle and sheep on the rolling hillsides; in the Tay Valley we have some of the best and most productive arable land in Scotland. Blairgowrie is known as the Berry Capital of the UK, in the heart of soft fruit territory, while we also have a lot of

vegetables grown in Perthshire, including a large percentage of the UK’s broccoli grown around Coupar Angus.” Jim continues: “Perthshire’s central location is one of the reasons why the area is such a hub for high quality meat production, something for which Scotland is famed. Scottish farming may be facing big changes, but with challenges come opportunity and it is up to the industry and Government to work together to maximise those opportunities.”

FIGHTING POLLUTION WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN Across the UK, 22% of people reportedly visit a fish and chip shop every week – and a staggering 80% of Brits buy a chippie at least once a year. The most recent figures for annual spend in fish and chip shops topped £1.2bn. That’s a market to whet the appetite of any entrepreneur, and Malcolm Wood, inventor and director of Peel Tech, is obviously a man with an eye on an opportunity. He first branched into potato processing after

CHIP SHOPS PEEL THEIR OWN SPUDS – EACH CREATING APPROXIMATELY

420KG OF WASTE ON AVERAGE EVERY WEEK 6

INVEST IN PERTH_AUTUMN 2018

he developed the only UK grown potato used for commercial chips in Britain. (Prior to this, pre-prepared chips had all been imported.) The Woody’s chip brand was a success, but that led to a new challenge: the drains at Malcolm’s processing unit were constantly getting blocked with peelings and starch. An expensive issue to deal with, the smelly waste became illegal in 2016 with the implementation of the Waste (Scotland) regulations. Malcolm began to develop a prototype device, eventually patented in collaboration with the University of Abertay. Chip shops peel their own spuds – each creating approximately 420kg of waste, on average, every week. With a £10,000 fine introduced in 2016 for any unlawful discharging of food waste into UK mains sewers, the Peel Tech became an instant hit, serving up several awards for innovation along the way. The system works by taking waste from the potato peeler, separating the skins and compressing the residual starch to remove

the waste for recycling. Compact and cheap to install, each unit only needs emptied after every 125kg of potatoes. Malcolm now offers the units for sale or lease, making it an obvious solution for the more than 10,500 fish and chip shops up and down the UK. It can even help them turn a waste product into an asset, as the waste peel is an excellent feed for farm animals and can be used in anaerobic digestion for green energy, creating a commercial option for disposal.

VISITOR NIGHTS ACROSS PERTH AND KINROSS IN 2016, GENERATING IN EXCESS OF £564M FOR THE REGIONAL ECONOMY

Rising visitor numbers, visitor days and visitor spend reflect a thriving tourism sector across Perth and Kinross, boosted by favourable exchange rates, an ever improving tourism offer and increasingly sophisticated marketing methods. And with fresh opportunities to capitalise on, Caroline Warburton, Regional Leadership Director (East) for VisitScotland, is optimistic about future prospects. Reflecting national performance across Scotland, Perthshire in particular has witnessed more than a 9% rise in yearon-year tourism visits, sustaining a trend over recent years that has seen overall visitor numbers increase 7.7% since 2009. More than 58% of those visits involve an overnight stay, generating in excess of 5.2m visitor nights for the region’s accommodation providers. “Favourable exchange rates and the increasing number of direct flights to both Edinburgh and Glasgow have helped to increase international visitors to the region, in particular from the USA and Germany,” explains Caroline. “While international visitors might spend more, it’s important to remember the vital domestic market, which accounts for more than 60% of all visitors to the region. Day visits in particular have an immediate impact on local cafes and restaurants, bringing essential spend into our towns, cities and rural areas.” In fact, the number of day visits to Perthshire has grown even more rapidly, increasing nearly 16% between 2015-16. “People want to stay in stunning locations with attractive towns and cities and great food and drink to explore. With

that in mind, you can see why Perthshire is proving so popular. We’re certainly seeing the benefits of recent public realm improvements and landscaping in and around Perth city centre,” adds Caroline. “We would expect to see those figures continue to grow this year, especially after a particularly successful summer with a packed events programme in 2018. Headline events such as BBC Radio’s Biggest Weekend, Rewind Scotland and major events on The Inches have all helped to put Perth and the surrounding area on the map.” With the recent opening of the V&A Dundee, local businesses have a once in a generation opportunity to forge new relationships and create new regional itineraries. “One such example is Scotland’s Tay Country Campaign, in which VisitScotland has worked with the four local authorities to showcase the area to the rest of the UK and inspire people to visit. We also have a new phase of marketing activity surrounding the wider Scotland is Now campaign, so there is plenty to look forward to.”

The number of day visits to Perthshire has increased nearly 16% between 2015-16.

PERTHSHIRE’S ENDURING AND GROWING VISITOR APPEAL Undoubtedly, challenges exist and as Caroline points out, past performance is no guarantee of future success. “Uncertainty remains around future domestic spending capacity, so we can’t be complacent. However, tourism has always been a resilient industry and we are well placed to cope with any challenges that might come.”

investment, but increasingly the sector is witnessing the rebirth of new and exclusive independent hotels. As John Shevlin, General Manager of Dunkeld House Hotel explains, standing still is not an option. “Since our new owners took over the hotel in 2016, more than £3m has been invested in our spa facilities, the bar and brasserie, as well as the creation of additional meeting rooms. We’ve refurbished the majority of our bedroom stock, installed a biomass plant to boost our green credentials and invested heavily in our people, with a new restaurant and management team in place. The result is an exclusive 98-bedroom venue set in 250 acres of picturesque Perthshire woodland. It’s a similar story at the equally breathtaking Fonab Castle Hotel, overlooking the waters of Loch Faskally in the heart of the Tummel valley. The 42-bedroom five star venue has recently undergone a £1.5m transformation that has not only seen the refurbishment of bedroom stock, but significant investment in staff accommodation, new lounges and bar area. “We recently celebrated our fifth birthday since opening,” adds Niall Thompson, General Manager, “but we’re continually looking to the future to see how we can enhance our offer and cater for future expansion in order to meet growing demand from the incentive meetings and events market.” Overlooking Scone, the 365 acre Murrayshall Country House Hotel has just embarked on a £750k upgrade which will complete the soft refurbishment of its 40 luxury bedrooms and suites, including public areas. As Kevin Keenan, General Manager explains, this follows an earlier £1m investment in the hotel, which delivered new heating systems, as well as the complete refurbishment of its brasserie, cocktail bar and function suites. “Continual investment in our product and people is essential to ensuring we deliver a consistent, high

‘Big Tree Country’, ‘The Heart of Scotland’: it’s no wonder visitors find it hard to resist the allure of the region’s landscapes, opportunities for adventure and famed food and drink offer. Boosted by favourable exchange rates and improved international connections to Scotland, there has never been a greater interest in exploring Perthshire. Total visitor numbers exceeded two million in 2016, the most recent figures available, up 9.4% on 2015: and 58% of visitors stayed at least one night. The visitor economy brought £564m to the area in 2016 – a 17% increase on a 2009 benchline. Whether seeking a true taste of the best Scotland has to offer, an inspiring venue for a business conference or the perfect place for an adventure-filled family break, Perthshire is catering for everyone, all year round. “That’s one of the surprising things,” says Nassar Khalil, Director of Hotels and Leisure at Henley PLC and owner of the luxurious design led Dunalastair Hotel Suites. “When we opened we were told we would probably have to close two to three months each year during the off season, but that’s not been the case at all. The Winter season has proved hugely popular.” Offering 32 luxury suites and fine dining at its exclusive restaurant Edina’s, the five star Dunalastair on the shores of Loch Rannoch is one of several destinations making a mark, re-opening in May 2017 following a £5m investment. The venue, an official partner of Tesla and a member of the prestigious Conde Nast Johansens hotel collection, has quickly established itself as a wedding venue and host for high-end events including car launches and other corporate events. “We love Perthshire. We’ve been well supported by Perthshire and Scotland as a whole. Our occupancy rates underline the popularity of our high-end luxury offer, all year round,” adds Nassar. Dunalastair’s commitment to excellence is replicated across Perthshire’s unmistakable high-end tourism product, an offer delivering venues with character, offering the finest locally grown produce and exceptional levels of customer service. The enduring appeal of flagship five star venues, such as Crieff Hydro and Gleneagles Hotel and Spa, continue to benefit from significant

quality offer to guests,” says Kevin. “We’ve even been able to buck the national trend by growing golf memberships, thanks to investment in our courses in 2017, while weddings have grown from six in 2017 to 40 already booked in 2019.” For those looking for something different but equally memorable, the Lamotte family has spent the past 18-months transforming the family’s 150-acre hilltop farm, with its unparalleled panoramic views across the Tay valley, into an experiential rural retreat. Investment has seen former outbuildings and steadings transformed into a combination of off-grid and luxury accommodation while providing an informal wedding venue for parties of up to 150 guests. “We can accommodate up to 30 guests across the farm,” explains Anna Lamotte. “We limit wedding parties to every other week, but demand means we’re already booked up until the end of 2020! In the weeks between, our combination of sustainable cabins, cottages and the farmhouse offer the perfect chance to enjoy a digital detox, breathe fresh farm air and soak up the view.”

DESIGNED TO ACCELERATE AND TRANSFORM THE DELIVERY OF PUBLIC SERVICES, SMART CITY PROJECTS ARE PART OF AN ERDF (EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND) STRATEGIC INTERVENTION THAT HAS BEEN RUNNING ACROSS ALL SEVEN OF SCOTLAND’S CITIES SINCE 2014.

KNOW-HOW:

THE SMART MONEY IS ON THE SMART CITY Perth has been piloting new technologies that can help cut pollution, improve traffic flow and air quality, and help planners gain insight into the way the city is working. Such investment in the enabling infrastructure will ultimately improve the quality of life for everyone who lives and works here. “Perth has an outstanding reputation for quality of life, but by working together, Scotland’s cities are driving forward a vision to make city living even more attractive and resilient, through data and digital technology,” explains Doug Young, Smart Perth Project Coordinator.

Six projects are underway in Perth, including the Innovation Hub, part of the wider Perth Creative Exchange, which will open next year; a centralised and modernised City Operations Centre, controlling CCTV and integrated into the wider Tay region network; digital infrastructure, with free city centre Wi-Fi to be launched in the next few months; a mobile working project, which enables front line staff to do admin tasks in situ, rather than having to return to the office; and an open data platform to share information and leverage additional benefits. Intelligent street lighting is another key project under the theme of smart infrastructure. “We’ve been able to tie the project into scheduled work to replace lamps with LED units,” explains Doug. “We’ve installed a Central Management System (CMS), which can monitor individual street lights as well as adjust the lighting levels on each LED lantern. In addition, some lanterns are fitted with an intelligent light sensor. These can record footfall and vehicle traffic, as well as adjust the lighting levels on each LED, with units being piloted at Broxden Park & Ride car park. Work is underway to enable 2,200 street lights within the Perth City Centre area to integrate with the CMS, with over two-thirds of the nodes currently installed by the supplier. The aim is to complete installation and be fully operational by the end of the year.

53,000

KNOW-HOW

Scott Denyer, Senior Engineer with the Street Lighting Partnership, says: “The LEDs are more efficient and less prone to faults, making the system more economical. With the ability to monitor each lantern and control light intensity, we can make areas more secure, welcoming, and increase the appeal of the city centre after 6pm.” There is also the potential to leverage the capabilities of the Intelligent Street Lighting system for events. This year’s Festival of Light ran between 26 January – 14 February and brought more than 53,000 people into the city after 6pm, a 5% uplift on 2017. Themed events celebrated Burns Night, Chinese New Year and St Valentine’s Day, while Riverside light nights saw landmarks and buildings across the city centre lit by colourful spotlights and animated projections. With this new, enhanced capacity to control and monitor street lighting, light levels can be adjusted for any future event or where there is an operational need. In the case of an event like the Festival of Light, this could enable dynamic lighting to maximise visual effects, while not compromising public safety at other times. In addition, analysis of other sources of data will be used to enhance the city centre experience by, for example, looking at local spend at specific events using the Mi Rewards programme (see page 4)

and Perth City Gift Card. Being able to combine travel data collated by transport operators; city Wi-Fi usage data (Perth will launch a free city centre Wi-Fi service later this year); and adding that layer of consumer payment data, will give planners a powerful tool to make a step-change in how the city operates. Networked sensors have also been fitted to city centre bins, enabling the scheduling of pick-ups to keep the city centre cleaner and specific areas tidy, as required in real time. And there are plans to add sensors

to glass collection points, making service delivery smarter through better, more targeted use of resources. The vision for the ERDF Smart City programme is to enable cities to become more vibrant, liveable and resilient through the use of data and digital technology. Perth will share its findings using open data and be able to learn from the experience of projects across Scotland. “Smart projects allow us to learn, plan, and make improvements that develop our local economy and improve service delivery,” says Doug.

Marine pollution is a serious issue . The marine system provides approximately 14% of global protein and 70% of our oxygen.

systems, it also represents a clear and present danger to our natural environment. Working with Zero Waste Scotland, John Ferguson, director of Perthshire-based EcoideaM Ltd and founder of Pi Polymer Recycling has been able to bring together three companies: Recycling Technologies Ltd, Impact Recycling Ltd and PI-Polymer – to create a joined up approach to plastics recycling. The result is Project Beacon. John explains the challenge facing existing recycling infrastructure. “As far as the public is concerned there are perhaps five or six different types of plastics they come across on a regular basis. In fact, a recent EU study identified more than 5,000 different plastics in common use, all with different chemical properties. Polyethylene alone has hundreds of variants. In order to make recycling a commercially viable option, and support the circular use of plastics in manufacturing, we need to be able to secure maximum utility from the material.” To do that, the first step is to create an advanced plastics sorting facility, which will be delivered in two phases. Phase one is underway and combines separation

content in new packaging production. Each RT7000 system can convert 7,000 tonnes of plastic waste per annum into 5,300 tonnes of Plaxx. 25% of its output, a light hydrocarbon gas, is used to power the process, making it 85% energy efficient. “Project Beacon is a world-first facility and an example of companies across the waste plastic sector working in partnership to rethink the future of plastic recycling, starting in Scotland,” explains Operations Director, Will Garrard. “Recycling Technologies is delighted to be installing its first RT7000 chemical recycling machine at Binn Eco Park to help the region convert 90% of its plastic waste into valuable resources. Project Beacon will contribute to a more sustainable, competitive and vibrant economy and keep plastics out of the oceans and off our beaches.” With effective advanced sorting, it will become possible to collect ALL plastics for recycling and treat a far greater range of plastics than ever before, including previously unusable plastics used in food packaging, such as wrappers and black meat trays. Phase 2 of Project Beacon intends to build an Advanced Plastics Sorting Facility. This will target smaller rigid plastics commonly found in the domestic waste stream for recycling, as well as non-sortable plastics (small films and foils, black plastic etc) via the chemical recycling route, offering recycling of more than 90% of collected plastics. With work on the Project Beacon facility expected to begin by the end of 2018, John and Will hope to see the plant operational by mid-2019. “Project Beacon has the potential to not only transform how we treat and manage our plastic waste, but also act as a catalyst for an entirely new plastics manufacturing industry in Scotland,” adds John.

technology developed by Pi-Polymer Recycling with chemical recycling through Recycling Technologies’ RT7000 process. By harnessing infra-red light, Pi Polymers has developed technology capable of automatically sorting up to 12,000 tonnes of large rigid post-consumer plastic each year with a single plant operating on a single eight hour shift. Up until now, such material would be landfilled or blended for incineration. Up to four plants placed strategically around the country would be able to sort almost all of Scotland’s large rigid plastic waste for eventual recycling. Phase one of Project Beacon also heralds the first commercial installation of Recycling Technologies’ innovative chemical recycling process. Its patented RT7000 process uses thermal cracking technology to recycle waste plastics that are not typically mechanically recycled, including plastic films, coloured and composite plastics and even laminated plastic waste such as crisp packets and pet food pouches. The oil produced, Plaxx®, is a valuable raw material that can be used in making new, virgin-quality plastics. Demand for Plaxx is growing rapidly from global plastics producers seeking to use recycled

MANAGED GROWTH ENGINEERS KILMAC’S SUCCESS OVER THE PAST 14 YEARS, CIVIL ENGINEERING BUSINESS KILMAC HAS ESTABLISHED A REPUTATION FOR PROJECT EXCELLENCE, NURTURING TALENT AND INVESTING BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY. INVEST IN PERTH CAUGHT UP WITH CO-FOUNDER ATHOLE MCDONALD, RECENT RECIPIENT OF THE “INSPIRATIONAL BUSINESS LEADER” AWARD AT THE PERTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS STAR AWARDS, TO FIND OUT WHAT IS BEHIND THE COMPANY’S SUCCESS.

When Athole and Richard Kilcullen founded the business in 2004, they set out to leverage their extensive civil engineering expertise and knowledge of the local market to make an impact on construction in east and central Scotland. Today, the company, which operates out of Perth and Dundee, boasts a highly skilled and motivated 100-strong workforce and an increasingly diverse business portfolio. “The trick has been re-investing the money we have made over the years,” explains Athole. “We didn’t get ahead of ourselves. Growth has been self-financed throughout and that’s meant we’ve been able to maintain control of our own destiny and remain profitable as we’ve expanded.” Based on strong personal relationships, the business has gone from strength to strength, remaining as Athole highlights, “firmly committed to our own back garden.

developers, for example infrastructure, such as laying access roads. The business also installed a 500kw turbine in Finavon, Angus, which is now generating clean power for local businesses. Looking further ahead, the team has secured a consented development for a 42MW windfarm on Skye. “We’re in the process of bringing a developer onboard to secure the local grid connections,” adds Athole. Adding another string to Kilmac’s business is an extensive property portfolio, which now extends from Montrose to Musselburgh. The business stream specialises in rejuvenating smaller retail parks by providing a turnkey solution for new tenants seeking fresh, cost effective opportunities to reach market quickly. Underlining Kilmac’s adaptability is a partnership with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, helping to deliver essential infrastructure in support of The Open Championship. “We’ve completed work at St Andrews, Troon, Royal Birkdale and Carnoustie over the years. It’s not necessarily core business, but Richard and I are both keen golfers, so it’s been an interesting area of work.” Through the Kilmac Foundation the business actively seeks to provide career opportunities and support to those left behind in the job market. “There is a huge range of careers available in the modern construction industry,” Athole highlights. “We need engineers, surveyors and accountants to name a few. That’s why we partner with Perth College UHI, Abertay University, as well as Career Ready to provide young people with rewarding career options and vocational training. We can’t do that without the full buy-in of all our employees. Day in, day out they give something back by mentoring some of our young people, engaging them in the world of work and, in doing so, helping to break a cycle that if left unchecked, results in parts of our society simply getting left behind.” Describing the award he received from Perthshire Chamber of Commerce as a huge honour and a complete surprise, it’s clear Athole remains as passionate about Perthshire and re-investing in the community as ever as he looks to the future.

Through the Kilmac Foundation the business actively seeks to provide career opportunities and support to those left behind in the job market.

“We recognised that the opportunity for us was fast-track, high end project delivery for blue chip clients. At the outset, that meant supporting public projects such as new build schools before moving into retail, including significant groundworks for large retailers. Such projects are delivered to a tight timeframe, often as little as 15-weeks, so quick turnover.” Risk mitigation has also been a staple of Athole and Richard’s approach to their business dealings and key to cementing relationships with national and multinational blue chip companies. “We definitely have an advantage through our local connections and as a result perform better in Tayside. From day one, we’ve remained committed to looking after our supply chain – fair terms and prompt payment. As a small company starting up, it was difficult to secure credit at the outset. We’re delighted to be able re-pay the faith shown in us by several key suppliers when we first set up. Those relationships mean we get competitive prices, while our local connections mean we know who to talk to.” In recent years the company has delivered infrastructure works for renewable developers and as such decided to move into self-delivery of these projects. Athole stated: “As civil engineers, we’ve looked at hydro, wind and biomass to see where we can add most value. Hydro has long lead times – up to eight years – and we looked at smaller, single stick commercial wind developments, but despite support from local authorities, onshore wind has become a contentious subject.” Despite those challenges, Kilmac has successfully supported other wind

SOLHEIM CUP COMES TO GLENEAGLES The 2019 Solheim Cup, the biennial women’s match play event in which Europe goes head-to-head with the United States, will be held at Gleneagles on 9-15 September. It will be the first time the prestigious tournament, viewed by many as the pinnacle of women’s golf and the most exciting, competitive golf format, has returned to Scotland since 2000. Scotland was among 10 countries to submit expressions of interest for the 2019 event and was chosen ahead of Bro Hof Slott in Sweden in the final vote. The tournament will once again see Gleneagles playing to packed galleries – both near and far – as millions of fans and amateur golfers tune in to global TV coverage of the event. The event is expected to attract more than 30,000 spectators each day, as well as around 5,000 staff and journalists from around the globe. Described by its designer, golf legend Jack Nicklaus, as “the finest parcel of land in the world I’ve ever been given to work

with” Gleneagles’ PGA Centenary Course has a proven track record of hosting global sporting events. The venue welcomed the world’s top male golfers when it successfully hosted The Ryder Cup in 2014. No doubt Europe will be seeking to maximise home advantage when the

two teams tee off next September, with Europe’s women hoping to emulate the success of their male counterparts in 2014 as they seek to reclaim the Cup.

As additional jobs and businesses are created, the talent pipeline is healthy. Perth College UHI is the largest campus of Scotland’s newest university – the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) – and has more than 600 students enrolling annually in its School of Creative and Cultural Studies. While most craft and design businesses are small (88% employ fewer than 10 people), a recent study commissioned by Royal Mail shows that two-thirds (65%) have seen their sales increase in the last year. Online sales are the driving force, with 72% now selling directly from their own websites. International sales growth is regarded as a top priority and almost half (49%) already export. All good news for Royal Mail Parcels of course, but particularly good for

Perthshire’s creatives in particular. They can grow their business while enjoying the beautiful and inspirational lochs, glens and forests that surround the city. Tempted?

PERTH ROCKS SUMMER 2018

PERTH HAS ENJOYED A SPECTACULAR OFFERING OF LIVE MUSIC, FESTIVALS, MARKETS AND SPORTING EVENTS OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS.

A packed events programme has helped to generate millions for the local economy. Festivities kicked off in May, with the arrival of BBC Radio’s Biggest Weekend; two days of live performances in the stunning grounds of Scone Palace. Headliners included virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, alongside Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Simple Minds and country stars, The Shires. Music lovers had a few days to catch their breath before Lionel Ritchie played to a sold out McDiarmid Park on Sunday 3 June. The former Commodores front man made Perth his only Scottish date on his sell out All the Hits tour. The focus was on young people in June, when Diverse CiTay delivered a full day celebration of music, theatre, art, culture, sport, health and wellbeing events across the city, all aimed at under-25s. Those with slightly longer memories were treated to a star studded line up of 80s performers on 19-21 July, at Rewind Scotland. The biggest 80s music festival in the world celebrated its 10th birthday in some style with OMD, Status Quo, UB40, The Boomtown Rats, and Midge Ure among the acts, while families were treated to all sorts of entertainment throughout. A few days later, some of the biggest names in Americana arrived in Perth for this year’s Southern Fried Festival, featuring live performances at the recently restored historic Perth Theatre and Perth Concert Hall. If the country, gospel, rock ‘n’ roll and bluegrass on offer wasn’t tasty enough, the authentic Southern soul food helped add extra spice. Two giants of British rugby union took to the field on 18 August as part of the

celebrations behind Perth Rugby Club’s 150th anniversary. ‘The Famous Grouse Pre-Season Challenge’ saw Pro14 side Glasgow Warriors go head to head with Aviva Premiership team Harlequins in front of 5,000 people at Perth RFC’s North Inch ground. The rugby showcase was supported by coaching sessions for youngsters, as well as a food and drink court celebrating the finest fare from the region’s larder. On the same day, Perth Racecourse hosted its sell-out Summer Carnival with a bumper eight-race card in front of the biggest crowd of the season. If that wasn’t enough, the return of the flamboyant Perth City Centre Salute on 19 August saw bands from across the world join local musicians in a colourful spectacular. Reflecting Perth’s Scottish Food Awards status as Food Town of the Year, 14-16 September saw many of the region’s leading chefs and restaurants present a tantalising array of dishes and cookery demonstrations during the Taste of Perthshire Food Festival. And there’s plenty more to look forward to!

The magical allure of Enchanted Forest beckons throughout October and November leading into a parade of zombies, ghosts, and creepy crawlies as part of Perth’s Halloween Party on 26 October. And what better way to prepare for the Christmas Lights Switch On, on 17 November, than enjoying The Perth Chocolate & Gin Street Fest?

ST CATHERINE’S RETAIL PARK OFFERS FRESH OPPORTUNITY

Following a £10m redevelopment over winter, the St Catherine’s retail park in Perth welcomed Homesense (TJX UK) and Tapi Carpets and Floors Ltd this summer, both of which have started trading from 10,000 sq ft units. A further 15,000 sq ft is already under offer, while a new phase of development is offering a 10,000 sq ft unit for let, alongside a 3,000 sq ft potential restaurant unit. The redevelopment increased tenant diversification and improved the overall appearance of the Park. Work included the addition of an

FORMER AUCTION HOUSE HAS LOTS TO OFFER Perth’s stunning location on the River Tay, and its strategic position at the heart of Scotland’s road, rail and air transport networks, offers a superb location for new investment and business relocation. Situated on Canal Street, part of Perth’s inner ring road, the previous premises of Love’s Antiques has been a landmark in the city since it was constructed in the 19th century, with distinctive and characterful mock ‘Tudor’ frontage. The former auction rooms offer a developer a substantial mid-terraced period building with more than 10,000 sq ft on the ground floor, 8,415 sq ft on the first floor and a smaller attic offering 1,000 sq ft. Proximity to a public car park is another benefit. “The premises could be suitable for a number of uses including a restaurant, leisure facilities or event space,” explains Keith Scobbie, partner at Graham and Sibbald, the agents. Being of special historical and architectural interest, the property is listed and consent for change of use will be needed.

PROPERTY

2021 will see the start of work on the city’s Perth West expansion, a 240 hectare, four phase development that will ultimately deliver more than 3,000 new homes, new schools, commercial and retail space, public amenities and a dedicated 20+ hectare national eco-innovation park tailored towards clean tech. A key tenet of the Tay Cities Deal, the development will be supported by a forward-looking Innovation Highway: a suite of enabling infrastructure designed to unlock the benefits of smart city technology and mobile working, while reducing the carbon footprint of residents and businesses. An open platform fibre optic data network is planned to facilitate research, manufacturing as well as domestic need, while electrical charging infrastructure will support the transition to zero emission transportation. In addition, a district heat and power feasibility study has been commissioned. Further details are in the Investor Prospectus from Scottish Cities Alliance, and in Scotland Investment Opportunities from DIT’s Capital Investment Directorate.

The Perth West expansion will deliver a dedicated 20+ hectare national eco-innovation park.
