A place like no other in the UK, South Lakeland is a stunning, world-class business destination. Combining astounding natural beauty and a vibrant culture, it’s a place where innovative, knowledge-based industry sits alongside leadingedge agriculture and rural enterprise, as well as one of the UK’s busiest tourism and hospitality sectors.
As well as its excellent local, regional and national transport links, South Lakeland benefits from exceptional virtual connectivity through the on-going roll-out of a superfast broadband plan covering 97% of the county. Cumbria is also one of five regions in the UK to benefit from a Rural Growth Network, part of a £165m DEFRA funded programme of measures to support new projects in rural areas; this is supported by an extra £8.8m from the Regional Growth Fund for infrastructure improvement to meet South Lakeland’s future needs.
Operating alongside these multinational brands are a huge variety of established, independent businesses that capture the spirit of enterprise, innovation and entrepreneurship, making South Lakeland a unique place to do business. This includes a flourishing digital and creative sector that thrives off the inspiring location in which it operates.
Energy South Lakeland also has strong links with the oil, gas, nuclear and renewable energy industry on Cumbria’s ‘Energy Coast’. Here, companies such as Sellafield Ltd, E.ON, BAE Systems, NuGen and URS enjoy cutting-edge R&D facilities, manufacturing capability, an abundance of natural resources, as well as a potential £90 billion investment during the next 15 years.
Experience The area’s long tradition of manufacturing and specialist engineering, coupled with rapid service sector growth and a thriving technological industry, has created an experienced and highly skilled workforce who are the driving force behind many of South Lakeland’s iconic companies, including: GlaxoSmithKline, HJ Heinz, Furmanite, James Cropper PLC, Marl International, Siemens, Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon, Lakeland, Mardix and Lowe Alpine (UK).
