LETTER FROM

I

Publisher Rachel West in 1985 at Alma Spikes Elementary School in Pocahontas, Ark.

n the fall of 1985, I began the third grade. I’d had difficulty in second grade, and my marks were just good enough to advance. It was evident to my parents and teachers early into the school year that I was struggling. After many tests, we found out why: I’m dyslexic. My parents were given two options. I could be placed into special education classes for the rest of my school days, or I could return to second grade. Neither decision was easy, but my mom and dad opted for the latter. It was hard on me as an 8-year-old, but with my kind teachers, friends (who to this day are like sisters) and the constant love and support of my parents, I pulled through. It was difficult, but I fully believe repeating second grade helped me become who I am today. Following that, my parents thought it was important to help me find a hobby. At age 9, I began studying voice with a professor from a nearby college who directed a regional children’s choir. It was the first time in my life I can remember excelling. Even today, that feeling of confidence stays with me. That’s why this month we’re highlighting some local programs that are as fun as they are educational. Children are learning how to play in a rock band, exploring the flora and fauna around them and taking an interest in growing their own food. Read more on page 58. In this world of hours of homework, early college test prep, scholarship competition and more, it’s refreshing to realize that while academics are essential, lots of learning happens outside the classroom, too. As many of our children head back to school this month, let’s remember that learning can be fun and inspire confidence, no matter where it takes place.

COMMUNITY

Back-to-school time usually means new clothes and pencils, but this fall in Water Valley, Miss., it also means a spruced-up playground. Water Valley Angels, an organization formed in May by B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery owner Alexe van Beuren and Davidson Elementary School librarian Andrea Clement, is a school support team whose volunteers tackle small, easily achievable yet high-impact projects. The first was to upgrade the Davidson Elementary School playground. “The playground is large and lovely, with tons of trees, but with hundreds of kids on it on a daily basis, it needed some TLC,” van Beuren said. “Twelve out of the 42 swing sets were broken, there were large sandy depressions underneath that held water and there wasn’t much to do on the playground except swing.” The Angels raised about $1,200 and replaced 30 swing-set seats; painted the equipment; spread mulch (donated by the city of Water Valley); and bought kickballs, soccer balls and jump ropes. The second project, which is still in its early stage, is to hire local artists to decorate the entrance to the elementary school. Visit the Water Valley Angels Facebook page or email watervalleyangels@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer.

INVITATION OXFORD | August 2015

E

lizabeth Heiskell, owner of Woodson Ridge Farms, wants to change the way people think about eggplant. “They have such a love-hate relationship with it or stay completely away because they don’t know what to do with it,” Heiskell said. “Eggplant has one of the most distinct flavors and textures.” But the vegetable’s versatility and its ability to take on the flavor of what it’s cooked or seasoned with is what makes it a favorite of Heiskell. She grows several varieties at the farm, which she owns and runs with her husband, Luke. The couple opened Woodson Ridge Farms in 2011 after moving to Oxford from the Mississippi Delta. In addition to selling fresh produce, they also host special events and have a catering business. One of Elizabeth’s favorite dishes to prepare is ratatouille, which combines eggplant with other farm-fresh produce. She says this is

key to getting the right flavors in a dish. “Pretty much everything that goes into ratatouille – basil, tomatoes, eggplant – grow at the same time and live right next to each other in the same field,” she said. “They’ve literally grown up together, so when combined they make the most amazing dish, especially in the summer when everything is so fresh.”

Ratatouille 1/4 cup olive oil 2 eggplants, cut into 1/4-inch cubes Kosher salt and pepper 3 zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 2 red bell peppers, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 large red or white onion, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 3 garlic cloves 4 tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch cubes (keep juice) 1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped 1 thyme sprig 2 bay leaves 3 Tablespoons tomato paste

In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. Add eggplant; sauté until tender and caramelized, around 10-15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and transfer to a separate dish. Set aside. In the cooking pot, follow the same procedure with the zucchini and peppers, adding more oil as necessary. Add to dish with eggplant, and set aside. Add more oil to pot; add chopped onion. Cook until slightly caramelized. Add garlic; cook around 1 minute. Return zucchini, eggplant and peppers to pot. Add tomatoes and their juices. Add basil, thyme sprig, bay leaves and tomato paste (reserve some of the basil for garnish). Cook 15-20 minutes on low, adding a little water if necessary to keep from sticking. Remove thyme sprig and bay leaf. Top with remaining basil, drizzle with olive oil and serve. Dish can also be served cold. August 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

A MARKET with a

MISSION

The Oxford City Market is implementing new initiatives to help make healthy, locally grown food more accessible and affordable for Oxford’s low-income residents. WRITTEN BY Katie Morrison | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

MOST PEOPLE KNOW that eating a balanced diet of healthy, locally raised protein and locally grown fruits and vegetables is important. But those kinds of foods are not easily accessible to everyone. To help make healthy food more widely available in Oxford, the Oxford City Market (OXCM) was established in 2013. It’s a farmers market with a mission: to support local farms; expand access and reach consumers typically absent from traditional Saturday morning markets; and cultivate new customers for Oxford and north Mississippi farms. In two short years, OXCM has attracted patrons including University of Mississippi college students, Oxford residents and a burgeoning and important new group: individuals and families who use subsidized programs to buy groceries. On any given Tuesday afternoon, OXCM

shoppers include beneficiaries of the Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as food stamps), and the Senior Citizens Farmers Market Assistance Program. Last year, thousands of dollars were spent with local farms and food purveyors by hundreds of shoppers previously shut out of the farmers market scene. The benefit is twofold: low-income residents have access to healthier foods, and local farmers experience a bump in revenue from a previously untapped source. To expand the appeal and the reach, OXCM Director Betsy Chapman identified avenues to start a matching program for SNAP users to begin this fall. Once established, SNAP users will receive “double dollars” to multiply the amount of fresh produce they can buy with SNAP benefits. “We are excited to partner with the Ameri-

can Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation and Wholesome Wave, a national nonprofit that helps underserved consumers make healthier food choices, to initiate our SNAP matching program,” Chapman said. “They will assist with technical support and outreach training so we can implement best practices from around the country while identifying what works best in Lafayette County. OXCM also joined United Way’s roster of community partners working to make good health a priority, which will be a huge plus as we work to reach more citizens.” Thanks to a spring fundraiser hosted by chef John Currence and Lamar Lounge, $1,500 will provide foundational support for the matching program. Yokna Bottoms Farm raffled off a year’s CSA (community supported agriculture) share (a weekly box of produce for a family or individual), contributing an additional $420. This will make OXCM one

The Oxford City Market is open Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. until Nov. 24. This fall, the market moves from West Oxford Loop to the new pavilion at the corner of Bramlett Boulevard and University Avenue. Besides local produce, there are incentives for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program shoppers and entertainment by musicians like Luke Fisher (bottom right).

Weekly programs, such as the new Chef at the Market, help educate shoppers on affordable ways to eat seasonally. of the first markets among pilots in Tennessee and Mississippi to participate in AARP’s pool of partners using a $3.3 million award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to incentivize SNAP users to purchase fruits and vegetables locally, improving nutrition and health outcomes for low-income consumers. Oxford and Lafayette County residents can help support OXCM and its outreach programs by becoming regular OXCM shoppers and “Friend of the Market” sponsors and by attending fundraisers. Community support has become crucial, as city leaders declared the 2015 season would be the last to receive financial support from the city of Oxford. “We hope that people see, feel and taste our value to the community,” Chapman said. “Primarily we hope people shop and support our farmers. But also buying a T-shirt or even just a glass of watermelon-mint iced tea at the market supports our efforts to expand access to healthy food and educate the community about nutritious eating.” OXCM features weekly programming, including live music, yoga, crafts and on-site cooking demonstrations from local chefs such as Sean Adams of Honeybee Bakery, Cameron Bryant of Ravine and Corbin Evans of Oxford Canteen. Their presence has helped shoppers learn how to cook and plan meals based on what is in season. “Mississippi farmers markets are not going to have heat-loving okra in April or young, tender lettuce in the heat of summer,” Chapman said. “We started Chef at the Market to capture the spontaneity and creativity involved when one chooses to eat seasonally. Our chefs show up with salt, pepper, olive oil and not much else. They have no idea what ingredients they’ll be using until they get to the market, yet they come up with incredible dishes. OXCM shoppers have loved watching them in action, getting great recipe ideas and sampling their creations.” The Oxford City Market is open 3-6:30 p.m. every Tuesday from April through November on West Oxford Loop. The market will move to the new pavilion underway on University Avenue once construction is complete. Visit oxfordcitymarket.com for more information or contact Betsy Chapman at 662-832-7257.

School was out for summer, but that didn’t mean children took a break from education. Students of all ages rocked out, ate healthy, labored on farms and explored nature while learning important lessons outside the classroom. WRITTEN BY Kate Lechler PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

aking music lessons can conjure childhood thoughts of painful hours of forced practice and stern instructors. That’s one reason Tad Wilkes and business partners Lydia and Carter Myers started Roxford University, to teach students how exciting performing music can be. Wilkes, a singer/songwriter, is the dean of Roxford University, which opened in April to put an innovative twist on music lessons. Children take individual lessons on the instrument of their choice, but when they participate in Roxford, they are grouped into rock bands to learn how to perform together. “Having them work as a team gives the kids a sense of accountability,” Wilkes said. “They also learn what it’s like to be in a band and how different instruments work together.” In June and July, Roxford ran two-week camps where bands practiced classics like Nirvana’s Come as You Are and Cheap Trick’s I Want You to Want Me. Innovation was encouraged. Davis Whitwell, 15, worked with Roxford professors to create her own arrangement of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. the contemporary selections. “I loved being able to come together and make music, and play something that people liked,” he said. The summer sessions culminated with a concert at Proud Larry’s, where children played to a packed house. Kent Jackson, the father of Roxford drum student Charles, 12, said seeing his son perform at Larry’s was a highlight. “I was so proud when I saw him onstage, rocking out,” he said. Amanda Hyneman, mother of Henry, echoed Kent’s feeling of excitement for the show. “From the hair and makeup to the green room and the stage, the kids felt like rock stars,” she said. Wilkes said the performance is crucial to the Roxford philosophy. “We wanted to make music accessible, to teach kids fundamentals. But we also wanted to teach self-confidence.” For the students, such as Charles, the philosophy came second to fun. “I can’t wait to start my next semester,” he said. While Roxford students were busy rocking out, other children ventured outdoors to listen to nature’s musicians, the cicadas, and explore the world around them. On many Tuesday or Thursday mornings, Katie Boyle leads groups of toddlers on interactive, educational walks on Thacker Mountain Trails. Boyle came up with the idea for Wonder Walks when she left her position as education director of Strawberry Plains Audubon Center to be home with her son, Eamon, 4, and daughter, Connolly Jean, 10 months. “I could see how growing up at Audubon affected Eamon positively, so I wanted to create a program to inspire him and other kids to be outside,” Boyle said. With this in mind, she began leading informal hikes through the Oxford Moms and Tots group. In March, Boyle decided to develop those hikes into an eight-week curriculum. With her as their guide, the small students explored the natural world and witnessed the life cycle of animals and plants. They learned how to identify native species like funnel spiders, lacewing larvae, sassafras and even poison ivy. “One of the best things about it for kids is that they start to feel like nature is their own,” Boyle said. Student Athena Delauter, 5, said she loved the class because Boyle made learning “lots August 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

of fun” with activities like hide-and-seek and making leaf imprints with Play-Doh. Athena’s mother, Marie Ann, said that she noticed her daughter enjoying the outdoors. “It’s a great chance for them to get muddy, be a little loud, explore and be a kid,” Marie Ann said. Fun and learning was also a summer theme for Oxford High School Food Club members. Organized by Good Food for Oxford Schools Program Director Sunny Young, Food Club is a place where high school students learn where the food on their school tray comes from and work with the school’s food service team to make food healthier. Oxford High School senior Jordan Repka, 17, said that the club has been inspirational. “I have learned to play an active role in a healthy society by participating in our school garden,” Repka said. Over the summer, club members maintained that garden, planted with help from Students for a Greener Campus, a University of Mississippi student organization. The students grew carrots, cabbage and kale, and used the food to cook meals for the club. In addition, Repka joined senior Faridah Salau, 16, to represent OHS in the Rooted in Community Food Justice Youth Summit, held in Detroit July 15-19. The summit, planned and led entirely by high school students, featured workshops, activism events, and chances to make and eat healthy food. “When you give youth power, they’ll surprise you with how they respond,” Young said. This was the second time that OHS students have participated in the summit. Two years ago, two students attended a summit in Los Angeles. This year, Repka and Salau enjoyed meeting people from across the country and sharing ideas for how teens can improve the environment by changing food systems in schools. They came back with ideas for rallying more Oxford youth around food justice. “We want to get involved in more community service projects,” Repka said, adding that the club has grown in one year “because our fellow classmates want to join in the fun.”

Yokna Bottoms Farm Interns

(from left) Ethan Norvell and Hunter Barr with Austin Keating (far right). Third from left, Will Bunch, a part-time summer volunteer. The interns help harvest certified naturally grown organic produce, which is sold at the Oxford City Market and the Mid-Town Farmers Market and is available through CSA shares.

Planting vegetables and growing healthy food was also the mission of college students Austin Keating, Hunter Barr and Ethan Norvell. They spent their summer working as interns at Yokna Bottoms Farm, a community supported agriculture farm started by Doug Davis, a University of Mississippi professor. The three men lived and worked together on the farm, opting to dig in the dirt rather than sit indoors in front of a computer screen. They answered a few questions about their experience.

enjoyed the people I meet on farms.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS INTERNSHIP? I was looking for something to do related to farming. I had some interest in the South. Being from the north, I wanted to get a taste for a different part of the country. They are polar opposites culturally. HARDEST PART OF THE JOB? Hoeing MOST REWARDING PART OF THE JOB? SCHOOL: Colorado Mountain College PREVIOUS FARM EXPERIENCE: My time here at

Yokna Bottoms has been my first experience working on a farm. HOW DID YOU END UP WITH THIS JOB? I live in Oxford, and I had heard about the farm. I came to volunteer, and they offered me the internship. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO FARM WORK? I like being outside, and I also like eating good food. HARDEST PART OF THE JOB? The hardest part of the job is hoeing. MOST REWARDING PART OF THE JOB? Hoeing is also the most rewarding part of the job. FAVORITE VEGETABLE: Potatoes WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OXFORD? I like the music around Oxford and also all the nice people involved in the local food scene (and the food).

NAME: ETHAN NORVELL, 22 HOMETOWN: Rienzi, Miss. SCHOOL: Mississippi State University PREVIOUS FARM EXPERIENCE: Taking care

of the yard and gardening from an early age. When I was in junior high school I began to try to start plants from seed and sell them to local community members. My grandma has always had a large summer garden, so I’ve helped with that through the years. My Poppa from the other side of my family lives on a old farm and has grown hay and beans and crops such as those through my lifetime that I’ve had the privilege to work with him on.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO FARM WORK?

There’s a sense of independence. I know that the skills I’m developing and learning can help me throughout life. I know I can always feed myself. HOW DID YOU LAND THIS INTERNSHIP? I applied to work with the Mississippi Sustainable Agriculture Network as summer intern, and they hooked me up with Yokna Bottoms. HARDEST PART OF THE JOB? The hardest part of this job, like any job for me, is knowing that what I’m doing is worth it. This sounds ironic in contrast to my answer for “why I’m attracted to farm work,” but I find myself often asking if this is what I should be doing, and then having to encourage myself that it is, whether in ways I’m aware of, or ways I’ve never even thought of. MOST REWARDING PART OF THE JOB? On top of the fact that we have a direct supply of fresh food at any given time, the most rewarding part of the job is relationships with people. This covers a lot of ground, but anything from talking to people at the market to just us interns chatting out in the field while we’re sweating in the blazing sun is rewarding to me. What can I say? I’m a person and I was meant to be with people. FAVORITE VEGETABLE: The onion. Well, technically, I’m a big fan of all the alliums: onions, garlic, and their wild cousins that we tend to have in all the yards in Mississippi.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE LOCAL FOOD SCENE? It’s pretty cool to get orders from the

local restaurants and know that within a few hours after I’ve harvested something it will be finely coerced into a wonderful dish.

Form Meets Function A mother-daughter duo with a passion for pleasing and practical interiors say curating their antiques booths provides them a chance to spend quality time together and guides the design of their own houses. WRITTEN BY Lanie Anderson | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

M

ary-Kathryn Herrington and her mother, Kathy Millner, have always been close, even though they now live in different cities. They like finding reasons to get together for more than the occasional visit, such as Mother’s Day or birthdays. For the last five years, they’ve had plenty of opportunities. The two own Rambling Road Interiors, which has space inside Sugar Magnolia Antique Mall. The family business is a blend of their styles, which include an affinity for masculine fabrics and cowhide rugs. “Rambling Road is a conglomeration of things that we both like,” Herrington said. “We have similar tastes, but our houses are very different. Mom’s house is more traditional, and I really love industrial things, so we’ve tried to stick with rustic and industrial pieces.” Their booths boast a collection of eclectic pieces, such as mirrors made from the siding of an eighteen-wheeler, cows painted on wood that favor Andy Warhol’s pop art, children’s school posters and other funky or repurposed items. Millner and Herrington opened Rambling Road Interiors in July 2010 at Tin Pan Alley in Taylor, Miss. Their goal was not to start a long-term business but to simply purge Herrington’s garage of some pieces they had purchased but no longer needed for her new home in Oxford after she graduated from the University of Mississippi. “If we could just make $100, we thought it was better than things just sitting in the garage,” said Millner, who lives in Memphis. “Since then, Rambling Road Interiors has blossomed. Every month, we sold more and more, and five years later, here we are.” Herrington and Millner often share the business demands of Rambling Road. Herrington has two part-time jobs and mainly manages the finances. Millner, who is retired, has more time for trips to auctions and flea markets in search of unique pieces, which she and Herrington call junking. She also occasionally finds pieces on the back roads of Arkansas, where she and her husband own a second home. “I called Mary-Kathryn one day and said, ‘You know I’ve bought the last two pieces on the

Kathy Millner and her daughter Mary-Katherine Herrington own Rambling Road Interiors. Their personal styles are reflected in the items they purchase for their antiques booths, and of course for their homes. Herrington prefers a more rustic look, which can be seen throughout her Oxford house (pictured).

way to Arkansas, so why don’t we name [the business] Rambling Road?’” Millner said. “She liked that, so it stuck.” That’s when Herrington’s husband, Lewis, a graphic designer, designed the logo with a bicycle for Rambling Road Interiors. The women also refer to him as the “muscle” of the business, as he often constructs wooden backdrops for their booths and moves the bigger pieces into and out of their space. At home, Herrington said she and her husband describe their style as mixing form and function. For example, a garage door hangs above their dining room table and serves as an entrance to the screened-in porch, and pieces

of metal roofing line their bathroom shower. In the same way, Millner and Herrington play with the function of a piece when decorating the booth for Rambling Road Interiors, where a chemistry test tube might become a vase or a rolling countertop from an old factory might serve as a kitchen island. “I can’t tell you how many times we’ve carried stuff into Sugar Magnolia, and people have asked, ‘What are you going to do with that?’” Herrington said. “But I enjoy creating a space that’s kind of a conversation piece.” They said being in business together has strengthened their relationship. “Rambling Road has allowed us to go on

some really fun trips together,” Herrington said. “We call them ‘adventures’ that we get into with each other, and nobody will ever know the silly things we’ve done or the laughs we’ve had loading a trailer.” In fact, the profit from Rambling Road Interiors often goes toward another one of Millner and Herrington’s “adventures.” “It’s been very rewarding that we’ve earned enough money to take a trip or do something to Mary-Kathryn’s house or mine,” Millner said. “We never set out for this to be a big business; we started it because we were having fun.” Follow Rambling Road on Instagram @ramblingroadinteriors.

Herrington says form and function are important to her both as an owner of Rambling Road Interiors and as a homeowner. A garage door helps marry her kitchen and dining room with the screened-in porch. Open shelving shows off her pretty collection of plates and glasses and allows them to be easily accessible.

Mary and David Shaw’s miniature petting zoo brings joy not only to their home but also to many area children, who delight in petting the miniature horses, goats, pigs and more. WRITTEN BY Melanie Crownover PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

Looking back, David Shaw may

have given his wife Mary a bit too much leeway many years ago when they bought a large piece of property in Lafayette County. “I made the mistake of saying she could have as many of whatever kind of animals as she wanted because we would be out in the country. I just didn’t know what extent that would be when I said it,” he said. “I knew when I married her 36 years ago what an animal lover she was, but she really took me for my word.” August 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

INVITATION OXFORD | August 2015

Animal lover Mary Shaw holds one of her fluffy bunnies. Right, her husband, David, unloads hay bales for his wife’s barnyard pets. The animals require a lot of care. They have an early morning feeding schedule and an afternoon routine, but Mary doesn’t mind the work. In addition to spending time with all her creatures, she enjoys sharing them with local children. The animals are a regular attraction at the Oxford Park Commission Easter egg hunt, at birthday parties and sometimes at Willie Price Lab School, where Mary teaches.

Now David lives in a zoo. Or at least, there’s one in his backyard. After years of collecting the pets she wished for as a small-town California girl, Mary has her little lamb plus 15 miniature horses, one donkey, six pot-bellied pigs, three goats, two ducks, a couple of bunnies and a few barn cats and dogs that make up her happy menagerie of 36 animals. Some came from exotic pet and horse auctions; others were gifts from family friends. Many even found the Shaws’ 6-acre sanctuary on their own. “Our two labs just showed up one day in the yard last fall. We checked with the humane society and put up signs to find their owners, but they stuck around even when we let them run free. Animals find us and just don’t leave. I think it’s because they know right off they’ll be loved and cared for,” Mary said. Caring for her animals begins around 5 a.m. for Mary, who is a teaching assistant at Willie Price Lab School at the University of Mississippi. Before leaving for work, she has a list of barn chores and hungry mouths to feed.

“Even on the weekend, if the donkey doesn’t get his breakfast by 5:30 a.m., he starts braying,” she said. “Most people wake up to a cup of coffee, maybe a few minutes sitting out on the porch after they get ready. I’m out loving on and feeding my animals.” When she gets home in the afternoon, she goes back to the barn to feed and bring everyone in for the night – sometimes enlisting David’s weather expertise as the county emergency management director to make sure everyone is in from the rain or covered with blankets for the cold. The only thing Mary loves more than caring for the animals is sharing her little zoo with the world. Whenever members of the community call, the Shaws load up Bambi the goat and others into horse trailers for events ranging from birthday parties to the annual Oxford Park Commission Easter egg hunt. She even sometimes brings her smaller animals to Willie Price and other local schools upon request for the students. The children enjoy miniature pony rides,

grooming the goats and horses and, of course, just petting the animals. David helps, even though he admits his love for the animals may not quite measure up to that of his wife. “I try to make it very clear when we go out that this is Mary’s zoo, these are Mary’s animals,” he said. But when he gets to see how happy it makes his wife, it makes all the hard work and caretaking worth it for both of them. “When I lead those horses around for the kids to ride, it all makes sense,” he said. “It’s easy to forget that most children these days have never been up close to a goat or pig. There’s something very satisfying about seeing such amazed faces when they get next to these.” “Small children and animals are my two favorite things in the world, and you can’t go wrong with putting those two together,” Mary said. “It really is a zoo around here. This is a full-time job. Most people think I’m crazy for doing it, but if you could see those kids’ smiles, you’d understand why.” Email maryfshaw55@gmail.com or call 662-832-1526 for more information. I AM OXFORD Adrian S hipman

INTERVIEWED BY Meaghin Burke | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem Oxford School District Citizen of the Year Adrian Shipman is active in promoting Initiative 42, a citizen-driven ballot initiative to fully fund public education in Mississippi. Her two children are Oxford School District students. Q: What is Initiative 42? A: Initiative 42 says that students have a constitutional right to adequate education, using standards previously established by the legislature. If 42 passes [on Nov. 3], then there will not be a debate every legislative session over whether school will be fully funded. Q: How did you get involved? A: When I heard about the ballot initiative, I got involved during the signature-collecting process. The petition was signed by more than 200,000 citizens from every Mississippi county. Q: Then what happened? A: We found out the legislature put an alternative to Initiative 42 on the Nov. 3 ballot. We believe this legislative alternative – called 42-A – is a ploy to confuse voters. We wanted to challenge the unclear language of 42-A. An individual had to bring the lawsuit, and I said, “I can absolutely do that.” It’s upsetting. This is the first time in history state legislators have put an alternative to a citizen’s initiative on a ballot. Q: What motivates you? A: My mother was a special education teacher and a school administrator before she retired. She was passionate about public education. I see how much our parent-teacher organizations, the Oxford Foundation, and our teachers are working, and it’s amazing to me how hard we have to work to get our teachers and children what they deserve. I watched my mother scrimp to make things work, and 30 years later, things are still the same. The Mississippi Supreme Court heard arguments about the language of 42-A on June 9. The decision had not been announced at press time. Visit 42forbetterschools.org for more info.
