the publisher

PUBLISHER Rachel Malone West

T

his month, we’ve decided to share advice for weddingday bliss from the members of the Invitation Magazines staff. Enjoy this issue, and we will see you Aug. 1.

My advice: A nice

gift for your bridesmaids is to let them select a dress from a color palette you have chosen. This offers them the chance to choose something they are both comfortable in and will actually wear again.

Rachel M. West, PublISher “Wedding planning can be stressful so on the big day just relax and enjoy it.”

-Alise Michael Emerson

“Accept the fact that at least one thing will go wrong on your wedding day. Don’t let it bring you down. These mishaps always make the best stories in the long run.”

-Hallie Marshall Thomas “Consider getting married in a sentimental spot because it will mean so much to you in years to come.”

-Moni Reynolds Simpson

“Don’t worry about the things that don’t go as planned – you are still getting married!”

-Leigh McLaurin Lowery

“One of my bridesmaids helped me make a notebook where I could collect photos and clippings and write down notes. It kept me organized, and it’s a great keepsake.”

“Check the Ole Miss football schedule before setting the date.”

-Sheena Hagemann

-Emily Welly “Make sure you and your groom don’t have too much fun the night before the wedding. I’ve seen too many grooms (even a bride) whose day was ruined by a self-inflicted headache.”

-Emily Rawlings Suber “Laugh and enjoy your day; don’t miss the big things by stressing over the small ones, and, of course, wear fabulous shoes.”

-Julie Cook Clark

12

INVITATION OXFORD | June/July 2013

“Make a list of all friends and family members who should be in formal pictures so the photographer won’t overlook anyone or have to guess.”

-Sonia Thompson “Eat something! Ask someone to prepare a plate for you and your groom. Otherwise you’ll be whisked along from one hugging relative to the next and forget to eat.”

-Cindy Galloway Semmes

Always a Bridesmaid Bridesmaid dresses are beautiful but are usually worn just once. These creative uses can bring new life to bridesmaid and wedding dresses. By Emily Gatlin

INVITATION OXFORD | June/July 2013

Illustrated by Laurie Fisher

the bouquet tossed, and the happy couple is gone for a week of newlywed bliss. The bridesmaids are thrilled for their friend, but what to do with their dresses? Oxford resident Morgan Walter had several bridesmaid dresses hanging in her closet, so she thought, “Why not have some fun with them?” For her 27th birthday, in November, she had a bridesmaid dress-themed party, based on the movie 27 Dresses. Each partygoer wore an old bridesmaid dress and hit the Square for drinks. “It was nice to be able to wear our dresses a second time around and get a little more use out of them,” Walter said. “It was fun to do our hair and makeup and get dolled up without the pressure of actually being a bridesmaid.” Other groups of women have found that bunco night is a good opportunity for reusing bridal accessories. Bri Samuels, a University of Mississippi alumna who plays in a regular bunco group in Memphis, said when her group gathers to play the popular dice game, they have made a tradition of the winner wearing a bunco hat made of ribbons threaded through a paper plate, similar to a rehearsal-dinner ribbon bouquet. Samuels thinks that old bridesmaid dresses would tie in nicely with bunco hats. To have a bridesmaid-themed party, create place cards with questions like, “What is the most bridezilla moment you have ever witnessed?” Serve finger sandwiches, cheese straws and Arnold Palmers, and the bridal bunco party is complete. Bridesmaid dresses are often made of fabric that is easy to repurpose. Certain silks and satins can be used to make throw pillows or a do-it-yourself pin board.

Peggy Myles of Peggy’s Specialty Alterations and Dress Making on North Lamar Boulevard said she is often asked to repurpose bridesmaid dresses. “We cut them off and make long dresses into short dresses that can be worn again, or take off or add straps for a different look,” Myles said. “Some girls come in after the wedding, and we make them little purses.” Bridesmaids can also consider donating their gently worn dresses and shoes to charitable organizations. Brides Against Breast Cancer held a Charity Wedding Gown Sale event in April at Castle Hill Resort to benefit breast cancer research. Other national organizations like Fairy Godmothers and donatemydress.org make it possible for bridesmaids and brides to donate their dresses to underprivileged girls for prom night. Visit fairygodmothers.org and donatemydress.org for more information. Community theater programs often accept dresses as costume donations, so what was once a red bridesmaid dress worn for a Christmas wedding could get a second life as Eliza Doolittle’s vesture at the horse race. The costume shop for the University of Mississippi Theatre Arts Department accepts costume donations at certain times of the year. Call the department at 662-915-1818 for more information on making a donation. If closet space is not an issue, bridesmaid dresses can be kept for future use as dress-up clothes for children. Lindsey Faust of Oxford held on to her old bridesmaid dresses, and they now have a second life as her step-daughter Harper’s favorite dresses. “Harper takes dance lessons, and she loves to play ballerina in my old dresses,” she said. “I love the memories that come with the dresses, so it is very special for both of us.”

With the rise of DIY websites such as Pinterest and the fall of the economy, the handmade wedding is making a comeback. A wedding made from scratch doesn’t have to look homemade. Personalized details make the occasion – and memories – that much sweeter.

Amanda Sutherlin Owens Amanda Sutherlin Owens began wedding-related DIY projects before she even started thinking about the day itself. She designed her own engagement ring, created from the diamonds and gold of wedding rings from her and her fiancé’s families.

That set the tone, and from there Owens continued crafting. She said she was motivated to have a wedding with so many personal details to make the day memorable for her guests. “I really wanted to honor all of our family and friends and make it their day, too,” Owens said. The wedding, held Dec. 1, 2012, in Little Rock, Ark., had a fourleaf-clover theme because Robert proposed on St. Patrick’s Day. The allwhite color scheme was just like Owens’ mother’s wedding. It was important to Owens to intertwine her Mississippi background with Robert’s Arkansas roots and family. Although she now calls Little

Do-it-yourself bride Amanda Owens, pictured center with her bridesmaids, made her own bridal bouquet out of antique brooches. Rock home, she attended the University of Mississippi, lived in Oxford for several years and asked many of her Oxford friends to serve as bridesmaids. Robert attended the University of Arkansas and is a big Razorbacks fan, so together they built Ole Miss and Razorbacks stands with pompoms for their departure from the reception. Other do-it-yourself details were made with great care. Owens’ friend Molly Ryle, owner of Thrifty Chic Love in Ocean Springs, Miss., created large paper flowers to adorn the staircase leading to the reception. Nancy Miller of Oxford, who is Owens’ aunt, hand-painted Ryle’s paper flower creations to give them color and depth. The save-the-date cards were adorned with miniature envelopes featuring hanging ribbon that took Owens 30 minutes per invitation to create. When the ribbon was pulled, the wedding date popped out in tiny numbers that took her almost a month to print on a Cricut crafting machine. Instead of a traditional guest book, Owens gathered smooth stones and asked guests to sign their names and well wishes in gold pen on the “little rocks,” a nod to the city the couple calls home. For her bridal bouquet, Owens collected more than 50 brooches – each representing a close family member or phase of her life, plus a clover for Robert – to create an heirloom piece that she now displays in their living room. She also made Here Comes the Bride cups for she and her bridesmaids to use on the day of the wedding. Owens’ family pitched in. Her mother made entertainment bags filled with goodies for children to enjoy during the ceremony. For the flower girls, Owens’ mother also sewed bags personalized with their names to match their tutus. Owens’ aunt created a watercolor portrait of Owens to display at the reception, and she baked a seven-foot tall wedding cake that had quotes about love displayed between each layer. She also created an ornate cake pedestal using an antique plant stand (pictured opposite page). “In the end, our family and friends really made the day special for us,” Owens said. “We definitely couldn’t have pulled it off without them.” Rather than using a traditional guest book, Owens gathered smooth stones and asked guests to sign the “little rocks,” to pay homage to the Little Rock, Ark., wedding location. She made Here Comes the Bride cups for the wedding party using a Cricut crafting machine for the lettering. Family members helped her construct a pedestal for the wedding cake from an antique plant stand.

Catherine Ann Herrington Davis When Catherine Ann Herrington married Parker Davis in February in her hometown of New Albany, Miss., making the event personal was key. “We got engaged July 4, and I immediately started planning,” said Davis, an artist with a degree in graphic design from the University of Mississippi. “I knew I wanted to incorporate a lot of my art and have people saying, ‘That was so Catherine Ann and Parker’ when they left.” Davis drew from her graphic design background and created all the printed pieces herself, including wedding and party invitations, the wedding program and cocktail napkins. For her engagement announcement, she used a reproduction of one of her own paintings of a heart. An invitation to a coffee held in honor of the bride included a sketch of the teacup from their china registry. And each printed piece tied in her wedding color scheme – ivory, inspired by her mother’s wedding dress, with black and pops of red. Davis also designed graphic pillows for her bridesmaids as gifts. Her

Catherine Ann Davis designed many of the printed pieces for her wedding, but her creative contributions didn’t end with invitations, wedding programs and napkins. She also designed a giant graphic focal point that hung behind her wedding cake and custom boots for her husband.

husband still wears the ceremonial tuxedo boots she had made from her own design, and the 6-by-8-foot framed canvas graphic focal point she painted for the wedding cake backdrop now hangs in the couple’s living room. Davis sells her artwork in local stores and helps other brides make their days special with products from her company, Hi Y’all! Made in the South. “The one thing I tell any hands-on bride like me is to not take it too far,” she said. “Make sure you hire that planner, florist and caterer so you can sit back and not worry on the wedding day. And don’t forget the photographer to help you remember later. I’m so glad to have done so much for our wedding, but at some point you have to turn it over to professionals you trust to enjoy it.”

More Than Words: Brides looking to make their wedding a bit more graphic can follow these tips on graphic design from Catherine Ann Davis. • Websites such as myfonts.com, fonts.com and dafont.com are great free resources for fonts for invitations and thank-you notes. • Quality, heavyweight paper (at least 80-100 pound) makes all the difference when printing something special. • Besides the font, color choice is everything when setting the mood in writing. Davis prefers traditional colors, such as ecru paper with black ink, and a few splashes of her favorite color, red, to keep things classic and formal with a dose of whimsy.

The bride designed red and black graphic pillows that matched her invitations and wedding decor. She gave the pillows to her bridesmaids as gifts.

• Consider contacting a local artist or graphic designer to create original art for printed pieces. Have the artist scan the work so you will have a digital copy and free rein to use the image on anything.

rides have been calling Campbell McCool for years, asking if they could rent his building in Taylor’s Plein Air community. This year, he finally said yes. “I’ve been watching the wedding industry explode in Oxford,” McCool said. “It’s become a resort destination for weddings.” To meet that demand, McCool recently turned the building, which formerly housed Tin Pan Alley Antiques (now relocated next door) into the Mill, a 9,000-square-foot wedding and event space that can accommodate up to 500 people for seated dinners and boasts 14foot ceilings, a full catering kitchen, exposed brick and maple floors (reclaimed from an old textile mill in Virginia, hence the name), and combination indoor/outdoor entertaining areas that include a 6-acre park and a 50-acre cotton field. “It’s got unbelievable character,” McCool said. “I think it’s going to blow people away

when they see the finished product.” The final phase of the renovation will be complete this summer, and the venue’s first wedding is already on the books for August. In addition to the reimagined space, the Mill will also offer wedding coordination services by Elizabeth Paine, who formerly ran a bridal boutique in Taylor, as well as an upstairs, two-bedroom loft, a couple of one-bedroom cottages and the four-bedroom Southern Living Idea House as sleeping options for bridal packages. “That way, if a bride’s family wants to stay together for the weekend, they can do that,” McCool said. It all adds up to a space McCool knows brides will love. “It’s just beautiful out here,” he said. “It’s the perfect spot for a Mississippi wedding.” Visit themillatpleinair.com for more information and rates.

Say Yes to the Dresses

The big day isn’t the only occasion for a special gown. Other wedding-related events, like engagement parties, bridesmaid brunches and rehearsal dinners, offer more opportunities for brides to wow in white. Photographed by Scott Burton and Caroline Beffa Franks

Bridesmaid Brunch

A short-sleeve lace dress is an easy option for a brunch with the bridal party. Oxford bride Jarrett Kincade Schmitt, who married Ryan Schmitt March 16, said she chose this dress for her bridesmaid brunch at McEwen’s (pictured above) because it tied into her “sophisticated Southern-theme.”

72

INVITATION OXFORD | June/July 2013

Rehearsal Dinner

Schmitt picked a knee-length pencil dress with ruffles for her rehearsal (pictured above) and rehearsal dinner at Bouré. “I thought it was classy but still had a little flair,” she said. “I didn’t want it to overshadow my other dresses, but I still wanted it to make a statement.”

Ceremony

Schmitt chose a lace dress with a scalloped sweetheart neckline by Augusta Jones for her wedding ceremony at Paris-Yates Chapel. “I love lace,” Schmitt said. “I wanted a romantic look and I liked the way this fit.” Schmitt, pictured with bridesmaid Sarah Hunt Heres, customized the dress by adding cap sleeves and a satin belt with a diamond brooch.

74

INVITATION OXFORD | June/July 2013

Reception

For the reception (pictured above), Schmitt chose a one-shoulder cocktail dress. “This was the first dress I found,” she said. “I thought it’d be fun to wear. It’s a party dress, and I thought it would set the mood for the reception. Plus, the lace mimicked the wedding dress. I found it online and Ryan surprised me with it as a Christmas present.”

Nesting as Newlyweds When Emily and Robert Gatlin bought their first house, a 1940s cottage, the couple was so in love they failed to notice the money pit warning signs. essay by Emily Gatlin

W

ILLUSTRATED BY MIChAEL IKEDA-CHANDLER

ith a June wedding quickly approaching, my fiancé, Robert, and I purchased our first house in May. There are important things one doesn’t take the time to consider when buying a house in a rush, like “Can newlyweds share a bathroom?” or “It comes with appliances, but are they under warranty?” The little two-bedroom, one-bath cottage seemed like a perfect fit. It was located on Magnolia Drive, and we live in Mississippi. We saved money buying directly from the owner and convinced him to throw in the two front porch rocking chairs and leave the stand-alone pantry in the kitchen. We felt like expert negotiators. It wasn’t until we moved in that we realized we had ovelooked

a few things, like the fruit-basket wallpaper in the kitchen, complete with American flags and coordinating floral ceramic tile. We did not notice the light fixture with matching floral stained-glass panels. More importantly, it seemed the toilet was about to fall through the bathroom floor. Surely the home inspector would have caught that. As it turned out, my husband and I, along with the home inspector, missed quite a lot. The house was built in the 1940s, and the kitchen – the bane of my existence – came complete with an out-of-date circuit breaker. One night while sleeping, I awoke to the smell of burning metal. I couldn’t remember if you tasted or smelled metal when having a heart attack, so I made sure my left arm was in good shape and jumped out

of bed. When I didn’t hear the noisy hum of the ancient refrigerator, I realized the power was out. Smoke was coming out of the old circuit breaker. The fire department sent two engines. After receiving a stern lecture from the firemen (“your house nearly burned down”), we hired an electrician and blew through our savings to fix a problem that we never should have encountered in the first place. We were broke, but not burning up is an important priority. I took my aggression out on the house. A few weeks later, Robert went to run an errand and returned to find me ripping up the patriotic, fruit-basket-filled kitchen. I tore the fruit-basket wallpaper down, only to expose even more hideous floral blue wallpaper. I had no choice but to scrape the walls inch by inch until all four layers of paper were gone. After three coats of paint, voilà! I had a kitchen I could almost tolerate. We couldn’t afford to buy new appliances after our washing machine broke and flooded the laundry room, but my new orange and yellow walls were still an improvement. The holidays weren’t easy. Our first Easter, we hosted lunch for Robert’s entire family: four large men and his parents. There were a lot of people crammed in our tiny house. It didn’t go well. When I checked on my casseroles, the oven door fell off. I couldn’t get it back on track, so I had to hold the door closed with my backside. We celebrate Thanksgiving with friends every year, and 2010 was our year to host. “Friendsgiving” is a special tradition, but it becomes even more special when the hot water goes out and sewage bubbles up from the shower drain. I have been trapped in the house by a fallen tree and had to wait for city workers to cut me out. I fell through the back porch and broke my ankle. The carport is caving in because it was built before people drove big SUVs, so it isn’t quite wide enough for them. I spent two hours locked in the bathroom before Robert finally got a crowbar. Yes, many precious memories are made in a first home. I am glad I have stories to tell from our little old cottage, but I think our second home will be new. June/July 2013 | INVITATION OXFORD

Baby Steps Many brides can’t imagine getting hitched without nieces, nephews or their own children present, but there are certain things to consider when asking youngsters to be flower girls, ring bearers and guests at the reception. Hire a sitter for children at the reception so guests can enjoy the night. Sitters usually run under $100 per event and are appreciated by parents.

B

If things don’t go exactly as planned, don’t fret. Sometimes the sweetest and funniest memories come from kids just being kids.

M

cClatchy, who has worked in New York and Washington, D.C., suggests the following to brides considering asking children to be part of the wedding ceremony.

• If a large number of children are invited to the reception, create a special food station for them. Consider a root beer float station, a popcorn cart or a milk-and-cookies station. It provides not only entertainment but also a source of child-friendly food.

• It is a great idea to ask a child to be a ring bearer or a flower girl, but understand that if they are under the age of 4, they could steal the show.

• Set aside a couple of small tables with stacks of board games. • Have a separate guest book for children to write notes and advice to the bride and groom. It can be a sweet and hilarious keepsake.

loome has coordinated more than 100 unique and memorable weddings. To help ensure wedding receptions remain stress free, she suggests the following to brides.

• Create an area at the reception for children to make arts and crafts. Put together a personalized coloring book with pictures of the bride and groom, flowers, cakes and other wedding details.

Claire Kiamie

• If children are a little older, have them participate in the ceremony as junior bridesmaids or junior groomsmen. They’ll enjoy feeling grown-up. • If it’s a second marriage, consider having the bride’s children give her away. Teenagers can also fill the role of maid of honor or best man. • Be flexible. Children can be unpredictable. Have a parent sit near the aisle, in front, in case a child won’t or can’t stand for the entire ceremony. Also have a parent in the back of the church to help coax children down the aisle.

Have older children play photographer and invite them to the wedding photo session with disposable cameras. It can produce cute shots and make children feel special.

K

iamie has worked with brides in weddings throughout the South, St. Lucia and Ireland. She suggests the following to successfully involve children in pre-wedding activities, from photos to the rehearsal dinner. • Hand out goodie bags with age-appropriate toys before the wedding rehearsal begins so children don’t get bored waiting for their turn to practice walking down the aisle. • Set up a table at the rehearsal dinner with paper, crayons, markers and colored pencils and give children specific assignments. For example, ask each child to draw a picture of what he or she thinks the bride and groom will look like on their wedding day. • Ask parents of young children in the wedding party to make sure they get a nap and eat a healthy snack before the ceremony.

• Bribery is acceptable. If you want to offer a post-ceremony treat in exchange for good behavior, that’s okay.

I Am Oxford beth hunt Interviewed by Meaghin Burke

Photographed by Joe Worthem

Wedding calligrapher Beth Hunt talks to Invitation Oxford on the importance of pretty penmanship. Q: How did you start doing calligraphy?

Q: How did it become a business?

Q: What calligraphy styles do you offer?

A: I had shown a little interest when I was 10; I asked for a calligraphy set for Christmas. I played around with writing and lettering at that time, and then I picked it up 13 years later when I was living in France teaching English. I was shopping at a stationery store in Paris, looking at pretty papers, and I came across an old-fashioned calligraphy set, the kind where you dip the pen in the ink. I bought that set and a little handbook that showed the French script. The French cursive alphabet has more flourishes and is a little more delicate than the script we use in America.

A: I realized that my calligraphy skills could come in handy about five years after I returned to the United States from Paris, when I was addressing the save-the-dates for my own wedding. My husband (fiancé at the time) said, “You can really do this. You could do it for other people.”

A: I have lots of different styles, and each has its own name. I name them after friends or celebrities. I have one named after Elizabeth Taylor. Some people like me to mimic the font on their invitations. You choose a style that speaks to you that also mirrors the formality of your event. Q: Why is it important for envelopes, which get tossed, to look nice? A: The outside of the invitation is the first thing a guest sees. It’s their first glimpse into your wedding. It will tell them what they can expect, and it really sets the tone for the occasion. That’s one of the reasons I love doing calligraphy.
