LETTER FROM
S
everal years ago, I arrived home from work and saw someone had left a large package outside my door. It was a shoe organizer. I laughed and called my grandmother, who I was sure had given it to me. She said it was a great idea but she was not the sender. I called other friends and family members, wanting and waiting for someone to take credit. I knew it was from someone who knew me well, but I never solved the mystery. It’s fun when mysteries pop up, but it’s even more exciting to solve one. This month, Managing Editor Sonia Thompson found out the answer to a longtime question of mine: “Who is Oxford’s street artist?” Any time I’ve passed the box of puppies painted on the side of High Point Coffee on the Square or the art on the back door of the Lyric (left), I’ve wondered who created it. Find out on page 73. The story illustrates the larger theme of our issue this month, which is appreciating art, even when it’s found in unexpected locations. We visited with painter Bradley Gordon, who has recently relocated his art studio from his house to a space he built off the beaten path. He says the new studio not only allows him to be creative but also reminds him of his childhood and is a place he can share with his family. We’ve talked to several young artists whose dreams are being realized by hosting or participating in art shows in nontraditional spaces. Pop-up art around town is a growing trend that seems to be good for everyone. On April 24 and 25 we celebrate the Double Decker Arts Festival, a true pop-up art show. For two days, the Square comes alive with art and music as we enjoy the work of both budding artists and seasoned professionals. And just before that, on April 23, Oxford’s first outdoor sculpture trail springs up in Pat Lamar Park and other places around town. I can’t wait to pop by.

MEET theARTIST Joe Worthem Oxford native Joe Worthem is the Invitation Magazines staff photographer, but he’s more of a jack-of-all-trades than his official title implies. He’s also a skilled graphic designer and artist, and this month – rather appropriately – he created the jack-in-the-box-inspired illustrations for the Pop-Up Art feature story on page 71. “When we were brainstorming concepts for this story, we started looking at circus-themed images and fonts,” Worthem said. “The thought was that the circus is kind of the original pop-up event. The illustration evolved from there.”

hen Melissa Ondrovcik moved to Mississippi from Massachusetts, she never imagined she would become a farmer. After graduate school, Ondrovcik and her husband, John, settled in Water Valley, Miss. She accepted a job teaching German, and he signed on as a history professor at the University of Mississippi. She envisioned books and papers, not mud and overalls. But she found herself longing to be outside. “I felt cooped up during graduate school,” Ondrovcik said. “Sitting at a computer nearly killed me. So I stopped working on my dissertation, and I picked up farming instead.” That interest grew into Mudline Farms, an all-natural Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operation, but Ondrovcik didn’t do it alone. The house she and her husband purchased on Water Valley’s Main Street didn’t provide enough acreage to farm. She connected with new friend Lee McMinn, who offered everything she needed to start planting. “Lee has been incredibly generous, allowing me to use 3 acres and a hoop house as well as his tractor and implements,” Ondrovcik said. “Thanks to this, I was able to start Mudline Farms. Now, I work on the farm every spare minute, and I can’t think of a more satisfying way to use my time.” Mudline now provides shares of the weekly harvest for paying members. Last season membership totaled about 55 families. By choosing natural farming methods, Ondrovcik’s produce is grown with no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides. “This means I sell my produce to a guaranteed local market every season,” Ondrovcik said. “In turn, my customers know who grows their food, where it is grown and how I grow it.” With three 10-week seasons, Mudline customers receive a variety of crops, but kale has been one of the superfoods Ondrovcik particularly enjoys. “I made this kale salad when I was hosting
a baby shower for a friend. The salad was the easiest dish to make, but it made the biggest splash at the party. Now I bring it to any potluck I attend,” Ondrovcik said, adding that people are always impressed that such a healthy dish can taste so delicious. Find Mudline Farms kale and other produce at the Oxford City Market, Water Valley Farmer’s Market and B.T.C. Old Fashioned Grocery in Water Valley. For more information, visit facebook.com/ watervalleymudlinefarms.
Raw Kale Salad 1 bunch kale (Ondrovcik suggests Lacinato kale, but any variety will work) 1/2 garlic clove, finely chopped 1/4 cup finely grated pecorino cheese, plus more for garnish 3 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for garnish Freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs Trim off the kale stems and pull out the center spine of the leaf if it is too thick. Slice the kale into 3/4-inch-wide ribbons. You should have 4 to 5 cups. Place the kale in a large bowl. Using a mortar and pestle, or with the back of a knife, crush garlic into a paste. Transfer the garlic to a small bowl. Add 1/4 cup cheese, 3 Tablespoons oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper flakes and black pepper, and whisk to combine. Massage kale with a drizzle of olive oil. This will help break down the kale’s waxy coating to better absorb the dressing. Pour the dressing over the kale, and toss to thoroughly coat. Let the salad sit for 5 minutes; then serve it tossed with breadcrumbs, additional cheese and a drizzle of oil. Serves 4.
Melissa Ondrovcik started Water Valley’s Mudline Farms, an all-natural Community Supported Agriculture operation that serves about 55 families.

STARTER Catch Them Being Kind, a new essay contest, helps eighth-grade students at Oxford and Lafayette middle schools open up on the topic of bullying.
C
hildren don’t usually want to talk about the uncomfortable subject of bullying, but a new essay contest inspired local students to write about it. Members of the Junior Auxiliary of Oxford created the Catch Them Being Kind essay contest, open to eighth-graders at Oxford Middle School and Lafayette Middle School, to help bring focus to acts of kindness rather than bullying. “With this particular project, we felt it targeted an audience that is kind of unreached,” Junior Auxiliary member Jeannie Zieren said. “You’re between being a teenager and an adult. We felt like a kindness campaign would be meaningful for that age group.” The contest was inspired by a nationwide project called Rachel’s Challenge, which honors the memory of Rachel Joy Scott, the first

person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. Participation was optional and 29 students submitted essays. Oxford Middle School student Edith Marie Green was named the winner by a panel of Junior Auxiliary judges. Lafayette Middle School student Jessica Quella and Oxford Middle School student Eve Gershon were named as runners-up. Green’s essay, titled Drawing on the Lives of Others, follows.
When I was in the third or fourth grade, I went to a regional science fair at Ole Miss with other children at my school. I didn’t have many friends at my old school, and the beginning of the trip was a moderate disaster, due to the varying forms of bullying that ensued on the bus ride down. I finally set up my table and project, and then
took out some paper and crayons my Nana had sent me with so that I could entertain myself. I started drawing the typical wonky pictures and flowers, feeling desolate. I didn’t have anyone to talk to. Just when I was positive nothing about today could be good, there was a tap on my shoulder. A girl who looked a few years older than me said in a rather European accent, “Excuse me … But could I have some paper to draw on?” Of course I let her borrow some, and thus we got to talking. The girl’s name was Anja, and she told me all about her project. She was an amazing artist, drawing all sorts of pretty things with the crayons. Right as we were about to leave our projects to see who had won, she handed me a picture she had drawn. It was a spot-on likeness of me, right down to the pink
buttons on my dress. I still have that picture. Even though I never saw Anja again, and I don’t even know her last name or what school she went to, I remember her. I remember what her project was and the way her voice sounded but most of all I remember her kindness. Anja turned my day from a depressing one to a good one, all by being friendly to a stranger. She taught me the importance of reaching out to people, even if you don’t know them. I hope that one day I’ll get to see her again, but until then I plan to spread Anja’s kindness. She helped me, a stranger, someone she didn’t even know, and I want to do that. The next time you see somebody looking sad, at school or maybe on the public bus, say hi. Even a simple hello can change someone’s day. And maybe even their life.
Oxford Middle School eighth-grader Edith Marie Green is the winner of the Catch Them Being Kind essay contest. She holds the drawing that was the inspiration for her essay. She received a package with prizes from the Lily Pad, Holli’s Sweet Tooth, Malco Theater, the Oxford Hand Clinic and the Junior Auxiliary of Oxford.

OXFORD’S ART SCENE IS SPRINGING UP IN UNEXPECTED LOCATIONS. WRITTEN BY Kate Lechler | ILLUSTRATED BY Joe Worthem

hen Claire Whitehurst glanced around at the art show she helped create and curate last June, she saw landscapes on metal, felt sculptures, woodcuts and hand-stitched quilted fabric portraits. It was exactly the kind of event that she imagined when she decided to pursue a degree in art at the University of Mississippi. She
chose Ole Miss not only for its art program, but also because she had heard about Oxford’s literary and arts culture. The best part of the art show for Whitehurst was that it was held in her living room. “I wanted to create a fun, no-pressure event that people my age would be more likely to attend,” Whitehurst said.

ROOTED IN ART
Whitehurst’s show was a collaboration with three of her artist friends that they named the Girls Art Show. It is just one recent example of the local pop-up art trend burgeoning in Oxford. The events are short-term exhibitions held at laid-back locations like someone’s home or a small business. Each show features a wide variety of art, often from less-established artists. They break art out of the gallery scene and into other locales. They’re fun and funky and anything but stuffy. Exhibits like the One Night Stand Motel Art Show, the Girls Art Show, the Secret Show, and even the YAC-fostered DaVendci, a vending machine at Cups coffee shop that sells art for $5, are rooted in the pop-up scene. “For a while art felt really exclusive – you
72
INVITATION OXFORD | April 2015
have to dress a certain way or talk a certain way – but pop-up shows are more casual and inviting,” said Adrienne Brown-David, a local artist who exhibited her work at the Motel Art Show last fall. Erin Austen Abbott is one of the founders of the local pop-up art movement. She created the One Night Stand Motel Art Show in 2008. The show transforms 10 rooms at the Ole Miss Motel into mini art galleries for one night only each October. She said the idea came to her when she visited the Ole Miss Motel and instantly had a vision of an art show with visitors moving from room to room, enjoying art set against the kitschy atmosphere of the motel. “The juxtaposition of motel to fine art has been perfect,” Abbott said.
In September 2013, YAC partnered with an anonymous group of artists and art lovers to create the Secret Show. Tickets were sold ahead of time, but the location was not announced until the day of the show. At the show, which took place at the Vieux Carre building, exhibits included a puppet show for adults, a community novel and a mini class, with Cindy Aune teaching people to paint with their hands. The second Secret Show was held at the University of Mississippi Insight Park March 20. Stacey Sanford, YAC’s outreach and programming coordinator, was the liaison between YAC and the Secret Show committee. She said that the idea was to take art beyond gallery shows. “They wanted to show people that art is live and interactive, and that galleries are not where art begins and ends,” she said.
SOLVING A STREET ART MYSTERY
PHOTOGRAPHED BY JOE WORTHEM
A
lmost as iconic as Oxford’s red phone booth or Double Decker Bus is the town’s charming street art. For many years, the pieces remained a mystery. Invitation Oxford was told the following: “They wish to remain anonymous.” “I know who most of them are but they prefer that to be a secret.” “It’s someone who cooked at one of the restaurants in town.” And the honest, “I have no idea.” So what’s the real story? A few pieces have been covered up over the years, but four that remain are the work of Chris LeFevre, Duncan Bass and some of their friends. LeFevre, known by the street tag Fillup (a play on his middle name) and Bass, who sometimes signs his work Dee Bee, said they were inspired by famous British graffiti artist Banksy. The original idea was Bass’, but LeFevre, a University of Mississippi art student at the time, created the stencils. LeFevre’s street art is mostly creatures with animal heads and human bodies, including the man-wolf drawn on the back door of the Lyric (1) and the chefpig commissioned by John Currence for the back of his Big Bad Breakfast smokehouse (4). “I thought having an animal head and a human body looked like it could mean something and evoke an emotional response,” said LeFevre, who moved to Atlanta four years ago. The box of puppies stenciled on the south side of the High Point Coffee building (2) and the cat chasing a bird near the Frame Up-Basement Gallery (5) were painted by Bass. Neither LeFevre nor Bass take credit for the saying painted on the walled staircase on the west side of the Powerhouse (3), so perhaps Oxford has a new Banksy. But that hasn’t stopped others from taking credit for art they didn’t create. “A few years ago, I walked past a guy telling a girl that he did [one of my pieces],” LeFevre said. “I was like, ‘No, you didn’t.’” April 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

BUDDING ARTISTS The first Secret Show was one of the inspirations for Whitehurst’s Girls Art Show. Whitehurst was a featured artist at the Secret Show, and it got her thinking. She began collaborating with three other young artists: Sarah Gardner, Jenny Barnes and Hannah McCormick. The four women had been talking about putting on a small art sale together, but as they began brainstorming, it turned into something bigger. McCormick is represented by Fischer Galleries in Jackson, Miss., but at the time, she was just excited to sell work that had been gathering dust in her studio.
“We talked about the Impressionist art salons in Paris, and wanted to create something similar, a bohemian gathering where people could experience art in an intimate, cozy atmosphere,” she said. The show featured paintings, prints, textile sculptures and quilt portraits from all four artists. Each artist also raffled off a chance to win a commission. About 100 people attended. “The response was incredible. I was blown away,” Whitehurst said. “People still talk about it.” The next Girls Art Show is planned for May 15.
POP-UP BENEFITS A bonus of these kinds of shows is that they usually feature more affordable pieces of art. “Pop-up art shows cater toward turning young people into collectors, showing them that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to be an art collector,” Whitehurst said. Abbott added that pop-up art shows can benefit younger artists, too, by giving them a chance to get ready for gallery showing. “They can learn how to edit themselves, to become their own curator,” she said. More important, these shows foster a living, breathing community of artists and art lovers. “If you meet an artist or talk to an artist in person, you’re more likely to want to see more of their work,” Sanford said. “You can meet the artist in real time, which helps them sell, which means they can produce more.” Abbott added that pop-up shows create a sense
74
INVITATION OXFORD | April 2015
of serendipity. “They are exciting for the buyer,” she said. “They might not have another chance to snag that great piece of art again.” Tangible benefits aside, pop-up art shows are fun. They provide a playful atmosphere to experience art. Attendees of the Girls Art Show sat outside on Whitehurst’s porch, eating hot dogs and drinking punch, enjoying music by Colin Sneed, a founding member of pop-punk band Unwed Teenage Mothers. At the first Secret Show, a benefit for United Way of OxfordLafayette County and YAC, dueling bartenders created fresh cocktails and attendees enjoyed a photo booth. At the end of the Girls Art Show last year, Whitehurst had sold eight pieces to people new to her work, but more important, she and her friends had created an art experience that people would continue talking about for months. “The show repaid every bit of good intentions that we had tenfold,” she said.

program provides 16 large-scale sculptures in three locations. Nine sculptures will be in Pat Lamar Park, four sculptures will be in the Powerhouse Sculpture Garden (in front of the Powerhouse), and three sculptures will be in the Rebel Sculpture Park (in front of Meek Hall). “We are excited to bring this caliber of art to Oxford’s public spaces,” YAC Director Wayne Andrews said. “We’re thrilled with the pieces submitted and chosen, and we know the
trail will bring many new visitors to town to appreciate art.” The installations will be on display on a staggered two-year exhibition schedule. The pieces selected this year will be on view until spring 2017. The trail unveiling and ribboncutting ceremony, at 5:15 p.m. on April 23 in Pat Lamar Park, features refreshments and a 30-minute Double Decker Bus ride to the Powerhouse and Meek Hall.

INVITATION OXFORD | April 2015
Until recently, he worked in a converted garage behind his house in the Northpointe subdivision. But when he and his wife, AnneMarie, sold it to purchase a smaller fixer-upper close to the Square, he had to find a new spot for his canvases and brushes. The search led him to 19 acres on a quiet county road just off Highway 7 South, close to Water Valley, Miss. Originally, it was more than he wanted. “I wanted, like, half an acre to build my studio on,” he said. “But my dad was looking for some land to retire on around here.” They decided the property could work for both of them. It was serendipitous that the flat, expansive patch of earth reminded them of the Mississippi Delta. Gordon grew up in Clarksdale, Miss. His father, Danny, managed Rogers Planting Company for 20 years. “A lot of the places we looked at while trying to find this were either down in a hole or up [a hill], and you couldn’t get to them,” Gordon said. “So that was one of the first things we said when we came through these woods for the first time. We were like, ‘Wow, a flat piece of land in hill country.’” Gordon sketched out what he wanted, designing a budget-friendly and efficient workspace. Construction began in November, and he moved into his studio in early February. A clear glass garage door provides plenty of natural light, and when the weather is nice, he likes it open. His record collection sits close to his paints, and when the mood strikes, the music lover and part-time DJ cranks up the tunes while he works. There is a comfortable living area, kitchenette and sleeping loft. A screened-in porch provides a quiet space to feel the breeze, and an outbuilding holds his finished paintings as they dry. His father’s cabin, just a couple hundred feet away, is nearly complete. His aunt and
GORDON LIVED IN JAPAN AND TAUGHT SCHOOL there in 2008. He drew inspiration from his living experience when designing his efficient studio space. “I found that, coming from Mississippi, we need bigger, better, more. When I lived overseas, I realized, ‘Oh, I really can just have a mini fridge and I’m okay.’ So I tried to kind of incorporate that.” He used simple, utilitarian materials, designing the studio with cypress siding, a metal roof and concrete floors. He found all the windows on Craigslist for a total of $400. The small outbuilding is a drying room for his paintings. He poured its concrete porch himself.

“I want people to come visit. I really want them to come and spend an afternoon, talk to me, hang out, whether you buy a painting or not. I don’t want it to become an art gallery, but I have visions of doing outside shows and dinners. Bring a chef in, bring an artist in, do kind of joint showings.” - Bradley Gordon THE LAND SURROUNDING THE STUDIO REMINDS GORDON OF HIS CHILDHOOD. “Growing up in the Delta,” Gordon said, “people go there in the winter and it’s gray and flat and there’s mud, and it’s the most depressing place ever, but I think it’s peaceful. Everything slows down and is quiet.” Reminders of his childhood are found inside as well. For example, the bar (pictured below) belonged to his grandfather. Gordon sold it to a friend years ago and recently bought it back. The personal items further cement his connection to the space. “I’m always out here,” he said. “I come out here when I’m not working. Like yesterday I was cutting trees on the pond. It’s grueling, awful work, but I had the best day – fresh air and skinned knuckles. There’s no place I’d rather be than here. I love being outside. I love being in the woods. There’s something to be said about it being your own little spot. It makes working very enjoyable.”
uncle have plans to build on the land someday, too. While children’s toys don’t litter the landscape yet, they likely will in the near future. Bradley and Anne-Marie are expecting their daughter this spring. Gordon hopes the land will provide her the same things he loved about living in Clarksdale as a child. “Growing up on a farm and playing in
cotton trailers and in the creeks and in the woods, I’m really excited to be able to raise a kid and have this,” he said. “I want her to get muddy and pick up sticks. I want her and the dogs to run around and pick up frogs and do whatever little kids do.” The budding Gordon family compound is as much a place where he envisions the future
as it is as a workspace. “I don’t need all this just to paint. I could have built a smaller studio,” Gordon said. “But with a little one, and with my dad out here, I wanted it to be a family place where we could come spend the weekend and cook out. To me that’s just as important as making a living. I just want to hang out with my family.” April 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

ON A RECENT TRIP TO SAN ANTONIO, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER JOE WORTHEM WAS CAPTIVATED BY THE CITY’S HISTORIC MISSIONS. INTERVIEWED BY Sonia Thompson | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem WHEN INVITATION OXFORD PHOTOGRAPHER Joe Worthem visited San Antonio, Texas, last fall on a family vacation, he made sure to pack his camera. After touring the Alamo on a previous trip, he was intent on learning more about the city’s other mission churches. “I took art history in college and we studied cathedrals,” Worthem said. “I’ve always found them beautiful. To be able to walk among history is an amazing thing to me.” He spent a day exploring the four southernmost Spanish colonial missions – Concepción, San José, San Juan Capistrano and Espada – all part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Opposite page, mission San Juan Capistrano; below, the grounds of mission San José.

SPANISH PRIESTS ESTABLISHED five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River in the 1700s, primarily to extend Spain’s dominion north from Mexico and to convert and educate the local American Indians. Today, those five missions (the Alamo, San José, Concepción, San Juan Capistrano and Espada) represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America. Top left, mission San José, known as the Queen of the Missions, is the largest in San Antonio and was built in 1720. Bottom left, a rustic cross peeks out from the cacti at mission San Juan Capistrano, which was established in 1731.

The flying buttresses, carvings and quatrefoil patterns are good examples of Spanish colonial ornamentation. At its height, the mission provided a social and cultural community for more than 300 American Indians, and it was surrounded by acres of fields and livestock herds.

University of Mississippi alumnus chef Kelly English brings his Memphis-based restaurant, The Second Line, to Oxford’s downtown Square this spring. WRITTEN BY Lena Anderson | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Justin Fox Burks
When he bought
the property at 208 South Lamar last fall, Kelly English saw his future and his past. Amidst the dusty boards and Sheetrock scraps, he envisioned a new restaurant. One with an open, laid-back atmosphere, similar to how it felt 20 years ago when it was Smitty’s, one of English’s favorite spots to eat as a University of Mississippi student. “It was the perfect place to go after a long night out,” he said. “You sat down at a window seat, had your greasy breakfast and felt better when you left.” The Louisiana native, who is executive chef and owner of Restaurant Iris and The Second Line in Memphis, Tenn., has wanted to open a restaurant in Oxford ever since he worked here as a cook in various restaurants, paying his way through school.
AWARD-WINNING CHEF Kelly English brings his restaurant, The Second Line, to Oxford. He describes the menu as “casual, delicious and true New Orleans” food.

INVITATION OXFORD | April 2015
“HAPPY ENCHILADAS,” will be served, along with other menu items such as po’ boys and country-fried steak, English’s tribute to Smitty’s, a beloved breakfast spot at the 208 South Lamar location from 1974-2001.
“This has been a dream of mine since I got here as a freshman in 1996,” he said. “When this space became available, I decided to jump on it.” It will house his second location of The Second Line, a casual restaurant with New Orleans-inspired dishes. He says there is a misconception that the flavor of his home state is just blackened food. That’s the tourists’ version, according to English, who prefers to serve what he grew up eating, like simple, honest po’ boys. “People try to fancy them up too much. A po’ boy is what it is, and you should let it be that,” he said. According to English, that means good bread, high-quality meat or seafood, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and cheap dill pickles. “The cheapest ones you can find,” he said. He gave Oxford a small taste of those po’ boys and other favorite dishes in February. He cooked two nights at Big Bad Pop-Ups, a dinner series at City Grocery hosted by executive chef and English’s good friend John Currence. English enjoyed cooking for the event (which raised money to benefit the University Medical Center Children’s Hospital Fund) and appreciated the chance to work with Currence. “When I was in school, I never worked

for John,” English said. “As a cook, you always want to get to the City Grocery kitchen. It was fun to be back there with him.” English credits Currence for turning Oxford into the culinary destination it is today. English, who was a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast in 2010 and in 2012 was named Memphis Restaurant Association’s Restaurateur of the Year, will add to the reputation Currence has helped establish for Oxford’s food scene. Along with his award-winning restaurants in Memphis, English opened the fine-dining restaurant Magnolia House in Biloxi, Miss., last May and is currently assisting with the menu for a new restaurant concept set to open inside Memphis’ legendary bar and hamburger joint Earnestine & Hazel’s. He’s a busy man, but English – who last fall was inducted into the University of Mississippi Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame, winning the Outstanding Young Alumni Award – is looking forward to spending more time in his old stomping grounds. “John really took a chance on this small college town and look at all he’s done,” English said. “I’m very excited to be a part of what’s going on here.”

A NEW HAMLET OPERA, COMPOSED BY A UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI ALUMNA, PREMIERES IN OXFORD APRIL 18. WRITTEN BY MELANIE ADDINGTON
A NEW TWIST ON A CLASSIC PLAY
premieres in Oxford this month. The University of Mississippi Opera Theatre ensemble performs the world premiere of a new opera version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark on April 18 at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts. After the Oxford show, the cast and crew will take the production to Prague, Czech Republic, for a European premiere in May. Directed by University of Mississippi Director of Opera Theatre Julia Aubrey, the opera was composed by Ole Miss alumna Nancy Van de Vate. “She has composed exceptionally beautiful music to convey the drama that is Hamlet,” Aubrey said of Van de Vate. “Hamlet’s aria ‘To be, or not to be’ is a powerful moment as he struggles to answer this famous question.” At a time when it can be difficult to find funding for the arts, the Ole Miss premiere is meaningful to Van de Vate. “Universities are among the few places in the United States where any kind of new operas are being performed,” she said. “Unfortunately, there’s less classical music now than there used to be in the U.S., and I think it’s important for people to know that. Germany, for example, has 133 full-time, year-round symphony orchestras. The U.S. only has 17. It’s wonderful
when a university takes on the production of a new opera, because that may be the only time it will be performed.” Van de Vate lives in Vienna, Austria, and holds dual U.S. citizenship. She has developed the project over several years and said she was drawn to adapt Hamlet in particular because of the beauty of its language. “When I am looking for words to set to music, I either hear music or I don’t,” Van de Vate said. “The words in Hamlet are so powerful they practically write the music themselves.” Born in New Jersey, Van de Vate attended Eastman School of Music and Wellesley College. She earned her master’s degree in music from the University of Mississippi in 1958 and then a Ph.D. in composition from Florida State University in 1968. She has composed more than 115 works, including previous operas. Her music has appeared frequently at major international music festivals in Bulgaria, Japan, Norway and Poland, among others. Aubrey is the associate professor of music and assistant chair at the department of music at the University of Mississippi. She is past president of the National Opera Association (NOA). Under her tutelage, the UM Opera Theatre Ensemble won first place in the National Opera Association Collegiate Opera Scenes competition in 2011 and third place
in 2010. Her opera ensemble won first place in 1999 with the NOA Opera Production Competition. Locally she is also well known as associate artistic director of the now defunct Oxford Shakespeare Festival, where she directed many of the musicals each summer. The opera features University of Mississippi faculty and students. Graduate student Jacquelyn Skoog plays Ophelia, and faculty members Bradley Robinson and Jennifer Robinson play Claudius and Gertrude, respectively. Guest artists are Christopher Schager, who will play the Player King and serves as the fight choreographer; G. William Bugg as the Ghost of the late king; and tenor Ryan MacPherson as Hamlet. MacPherson is one of the most highly sought tenors of his generation. With a vast and growing repertoire, he is known for his captivating stage presence, as well as his expertise in modern and contemporary music. His 2014-15 season engagements currently include a return to Portland Opera as Alfred in Die Fledermaus, and singing Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance for Pensacola Opera. He makes his company and role debut as Gérald in Lakmé with Baltimore Opera and Delaware Concert Opera, followed by a return to Colorado’s Central City Opera as Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata. performances with the Delaware Symphony, the Cleveland Pops and Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra. French composer Ambroise Thomas previously made Hamlet into an opera in 1868, and his version was performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 2010. But Van de Vate’s version is different than Thomas’ operatic telling of the story, Aubrey said. Besides the fact that the Thomas version is in French, there are other key differences. “They changed the story of Hamlet, and we are staying true to Shakespeare’s story,” Aubrey said. She added that the show is a momentous occasion for the university’s opera program. “This is an extraordinary event for our music students and faculty,” Aubrey said. “Not only are we presenting the world premiere of an opera, we are the first university opera program to take an entire cast and crew abroad for a European premiere.” In addition to the live performances, a film by the Southern Documentary Project is in the works to make footage of the trip to Prague into a documentary. Mississippi Public Broadcasting will also film the Oxford premiere and broadcast the production throughout the region. See the Hamlet opera at 7:30 p.m. April 18. Visit fordcenter.org for more information.
Unrelated to the Ford Center performance, but happening on the same weekend, Oxford High School students perform the traditional version of Hamlet April 16-18 in the Kayla Mize Auditorium at Oxford Middle School. “It has been four years since we have done a Shakespeare piece, and this particular title was at the request of the students,” OHS Theatre Director John Davenport said. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. Student tickets are $5. All seats are general admission seating. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. each night.
INTRODUCING THE LIVING MUSIC RESOURCE CONNECTS STUDENTS TO CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL MUSICIANS.
Finding new ways to appreciate the classics is also the mission of the Living Music Resource (LMR) program at the University of Mississippi. The goal is to promote contemporary classic artists through an online video library of educational interviews in vocal music. Live-streamed discussions with musicians give students (and anyone else who wants to participate) a chance to interact with musical experts in real time. The “Beat” interview series (broadcast from the Ford Center) allows music fans to ask real-time questions or participate online from anywhere in the world. “Living Music Resource is on a music research revolution and working to make Ole Miss the portal for this interactive musical learning experience,” Nancy Maria Balach, creator and host of Living Music Resource, said. “Currently the way information is being shared about living classical artists is out of date. Classical musicians in the 21st century must find ways to bridge the strong traditions of the art form to the needs of today.” Past events have included participants from 15 states and four countries. Among those who have participated are not only university students and professors but also community members interested in the arts and public school students. Three events held in February included a discussion on the “Art of Collaboration” with composer Price Walden; a discussion with Grammy- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom and acclaimed mezzo Joan Morris as they work with UM singers and instrumentalists on selections by Bolcom; and a cabaret performance that was a ticketed event featuring Bruce Levingston, Bolcom, Morris and others. An interview with Nancy Van de Vate (composer of the Hamlet opera) will be added to the site soon. Watch broadcasts and learn about upcoming discussions by visiting livingmusicresource .com, like the Facebook page, or follow on Twitter @LivMusRes.

I AM OXFORD Kathryn McGaw York
INTERVIEWED BY Meaghin Burke | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem
Kathryn McGaw York is the executive director and producer of Thacker Mountain Radio, a weekly radio show that features author readings and musical performances broadcast from Off Square Books and is syndicated statewide.
Q: Why is Thacker Mountain Radio important? A: It’s the original words and music radio show of Mississippi. I love the idea of putting those two things together. The show started 17 years ago and has grown up with the town. Thacker is such a great way to get to know people. It creates a space where community can happen.
Q: What is Thacker’s role in the Double Decker Arts Festival? A: This year, we’ll have a Friday night concert at 6 p.m. with the Water Liars; then we have a live Thacker show at 7 p.m. that features the Water Liars, authors Greg Iles and Jamie Brickhouse, and Jim Dees and the Yalobushwhackers. We’ll close with the Rev. John Wilkins and his eight-piece soul band, and then they will play for an hour after the show. It’s an honor to kick off Double Decker, and it’s a great way for us to highlight what Oxford is truly about.
Q: How do you choose the music? A: We look for bands that are connected to the South. Sometimes when people hear “Southern music,” they think it needs to be country or the blues. Our interpretation is more broad. How culture intersects is so interesting, and that’s something we strive to represent.
Q: What is your goal for the show? A: I hope that Thacker is doing a good job highlighting the diversity of the South. That’s what we want to capture every time we’re on the radio. We want our audience to experience the South in its fullest form. That is incredibly important to feel, being part of something. It’s such a lovely visual reminder of what the show is and what is important to this community.
reach. We’ve been going to the Neshoba County Fair since early 2000, and we have a remote show in Ocean Springs, Miss., every August.
Q: Do you always broadcast from Oxford? A: As a statewide show, we want to build our

to pre-K through fifth-graders. I grew up singing and playing piano. When I joined Teach for America [before working for Thacker], they asked me to start a choral music program in the Delta. Lots of the things I did in the classroom are skills I now use in my job with Thacker.
