N
atural disasters change people. They change families and businesses, and they change forever the way communities work. I was living in Jackson, Miss., when Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast in August 2005. After the downed trees were cleared from roads and power lines, water was safe to drink, and power was restored, I decided to go to work in the heart of the disaster. I learned the Federal Emergency Management Agency desperately needed public information officers to let storm victims know where and how to access help as they recovered from the devastation. With a few years of journalism and public relations experience behind me – and seeing the storm damage every day – I was hired as a public information officer for FEMA. The experience of helping people through a time of heartache and loss was rewarding. It was not an easy job, but it was an important job for me to do – professionally and personally. I met my husband while working for FEMA on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For us, Katrina was a terrible storm, and we continued to live with it many days after most had moved on. But in the end, new life emerged. Something beautiful and unexpected came from it – a lifelong love for each other and for helping others along the way. We’ve seen up-close the misery these storms cause. But we’re also heartened by the way people pull together to begin rebuilding. It is our sincere hope that those affected by Tupelo’s recent disaster also find new beginnings as they recover, rebuild and reflect. Look for these inspirational stories in our coming issues.

The style: Vintage Country
The couple:
The entertainment:
Kylie Estes of Baldwyn, Miss., and Jacob Forrester of New Hope, Miss. Kylie works at Mississippi State University, and Jacob is working on his master’s degree there.
The family strung white lights over the dance floor. Guests danced to music from The Legendary Icebreakers of Memphis, Tenn.
The food and drink:
The vision: A barn wedding in the country. “I wanted something very romantic using lots of family heirlooms somewhere that was meaningful,” Kylie said. “A day full of love and family.”
How they pulled it off: When Kylie had no luck finding a barn nearby that would work as a wedding site, her parents offered to build her one. Kylie’s dad, Len, a former construction worker, and a five-man crew constructed what Kylie envisioned. “This place was a labor of love to make sure our only daughter could have that wedding of her dreams,” Monica Estes, Kylie’s mother, said. “The land the barn sits on is special because her great-grandfather bought it to farm around 1900, and Kylie used to have campouts and picnics there as a child.”
48
INVITATION TUPELO | June/July 2014
The space: A custom barn that seats 250 people. The space includes a kitchen, two dressing rooms and bathrooms. Three chandeliers hang from the center of the natural-wood ceiling, and the concrete floors are stained brown to add to the room’s rustic look.
The décor: Antique snuff bottles filled with wildflowers covered the tables. Homemade citronella candles fashioned from empty liquor bottles with monogrammed wax seals kept the mosquitos at bay.
Lemonade and water kept guests cool in the humid August heat. Comfort food, including barbecue cups, macaroni and cheese and a loaded potato bar, all matched the down-home setting.
The personal touch: Bully goes with everything. Mississippi State University was bound to play a supporting role at the wedding of the former cheerleader and Miss MSU. Guests enjoyed an ice cream bar featuring MSU-made treats. The newlyweds left the ceremony to pompoms and cowbells. Groomsmen also tied cowbells to the back of the couple’s getaway car, a 1967 maroon Corvette restored by Kylie’s father.

The style: Celebrity Glam
The couple:
Glam:
Baldwyn, Miss., natives and Mississippi State University alums Chelsea Griffin and Michael Scudiero. Chelsea is a May 2014 graduate with a degree in elementary education, and Michael is a Cerner systems engineer.
A custom-made monogram appeared throughout the venue, from the dance floor to a backlit glass sculpture at the bar. Groomsmen shot streamer and confetti cannons, and guests waved ribbon wands as the couple ran to their limo. The wedding party rode to the reception in a tour bus used by famous musicians, including Kid Rock and Nickelback. The newlyweds even received congratulatory letters from famous people, including the coaches of the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, the owner of the New Orleans Saints, a senator and all of the MSU coaches.
The inspiration: “I’ve always loved the way celebrities have timeless celebrations that are upscale and classy,” Chelsea said.
The decor: Black and white with light pink and silver accents. Lots of pearls and crystal to add glitz.
Where and when: A traditional wedding was held at First Baptist Church in Baldwyn with a rock star reception following at Elkin Place in Tupelo. Chelsea and Michael married in September in their home state of Mississippi surrounded by family and friends before they moved to Kansas City, Mo., for their jobs.
50
INVITATION TUPELO | June/July 2014
Helping hands: The couple enlisted wedding coordinator Deborah Simmons of Signature Occasions in Ridgeland, Miss., to help. Even with a good idea of what they wanted, it took about six months to finalize their plans. “Theirs was a very tastefully done over-the-top wedding,” Simmons said. “The attention to detail was amazing. I don’t think one thing was overlooked, and that’s why girls love to look at pictures of it when they come in to start planning their weddings.”
Music: Chelsea located the a cappella quartet who sang When You Wish Upon a Star to her on her 12th birthday at Hollywood Studios in Florida, to perform during a cocktail hour. Memphis rock band DMP performed during the reception.
Wedding cowbells: Chelsea and Michael created a Twitter hashtag for guests and turned a side wall of the reception area into a projection screen for event tweets and Instagram photos. By the end of the night, the area became a screen for the Bulldog fanatic newlyweds and guests to watch a live feed of the MSU vs. Auburn football game.
The response: “We felt so loved the whole time that it really was like being a star for a day,” Chelsea said.
Bridal Etiquette 101 Virginia Chambers teaches etiquette classes to children at her Tea for T’Arts Tea Room. This month, she shares the importance of bridal etiquette with Invitation Tupelo readers.
Q: Are there traditional bridal etiquette rules that no longer apply? A: In a world of email, the handwritten thankyou note is still essential. I’m not sure Emily Post would even understand some of the questions facing her in today’s world, but her word is like the Bible. You don’t need to rewrite it. The situations may change, but good manners are timeless.
Q: Are there standards even casual weddings should meet?
A: Never offend, and try to include everyone. My mother always said that if you only have $100 for the reception, you have punch and cookies.
Q: What do guests most often overlook? A: Be gracious. There are few receiving lines now, but you should never forget to express your thanks to the bride and her parents, or whoever is hosting, for inviting you to be there for the special day before you leave the reception.
Q: How should brides who wish for a childfree wedding day handle that? A: If you don’t want children there, provide a babysitter to care for the children and take pressure off the guests and yourself. Why should someone be penalized and miss your wedding because they have children? Good manners are all about thinking about the other person.
Q: Is there a correct way to tip the event staff? A: Caterers usually include the tip in their estimate, unless you hire extra help like waiters or a bartender. In that case it’s 15-25 percent, depending on the job they do. Churches many times dictate what a minister or organist may be paid. It’s not necessary to tip the florist, but any delivery person should be [tipped].

When I saw it, I fell in love ...IT’S SOFT BUT AT THE SAME TIME ELEGANT. -MARIELA MEJIA-ROMAN
THE HAPPY COUPLE: When Mariela Alejandra Mejia-Roman was planning her Nov. 9, 2013, wedding to Daniel Mejia, color was one of her primary concerns. She chose radiant orchid, the soft shade of purple that two months later was named Pantone Inc.’s 2014 color of the year. GAZEBO GREENERY: “The gazebo – that was my favorite,” Mariela said of the outdoor decorations that incorporated radiant orchid into the wedding day details. The outdoor ceremony and reception were held at Birdshot Lodge (now called Southwind) in Shannon, Miss. Florist Kevin Hinton of Bankhead Flower Shop in New Albany, Miss., worked with Mariela to include her chosen shade of purple in the flowers on the gazebo and in the bouquets and centerpieces. LITTLEST DETAILS: Even the ring bearer and flower girl, Kenny and Krystal Mac, donned coordinating pops of color in his boutonniere and her bouquet.
54
INVITATION TUPELO | June/July 2014
BRIDESMAIDS KNOW BEST: Mariela’s bridesmaids convinced her radiant orchid was the best shade of purple for her outdoor wedding celebration. “I had a clear vision about my wedding, and I realized this color would fit perfectly for all the decorations and the ambiance,” she said. “This color was easy to work with since it matched with other tones of purple and also with different colors,” she added. HERE COMES THE GROOM: While the groomsmen’s ties matched the bridesmaids’ dresses, the groom chose a dark purple shade for his tie. “He loved it,” Mariela said. “He thought it was elegant.” RUSTIC ELEGANCE: For the centerpieces, Mariela wanted a rustic and elegant look to complement the outdoor venue, and she wanted a short arrangement with a mix of colors to bring life to the tables. Other wedding details that were designed to complement the dominant radiant orchid shade included custom purple matches and purple chocolates on the candy table, and the cake made by Katie McCustion was decorated with green and dark purple to match the centerpieces. Since the April 28 tornado, the community has come together to recover, reflect and rebuild. by Melanie Crownover

INVITATION TUPELO | June/July 2014
RECOVER For the founders of 25/35 Ministries, the importance of volunteering really hits home.
A
my and Chaz Kirby covered the tornadodamaged roof of their Joyner home with a tarp just before dark on April 28. They spent that night in a hotel room, and Chaz surveyed the destruction more closely the next morning. Only half the roof was left, the windows were shattered, the siding was stripped, and the interiors were soggy, but there were also blessings to count. The couple and their teenage daughter were safe in the First Baptist Church basement when the storm hit. The house, while damaged, was still standing. Many of their neighbors of seven years suffered much worse. Some of the neighborhood was unrecognizable. The damage was reminiscent of what the Kirbys saw in 2013 when they volunteered in Hurricane Isaac-ridden LaPlace, La. That experience inspired them to co-found Tupelobased 25/35 Ministries last July, an organization that brings warm meals to volunteers and victims of such disasters. It’s named for Bible verse Matthew 25:35, which reads, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” “It’s ironic that our first major disaster we’ve helped with is in our hometown, in our own neighborhood. It was almost like a test to our commitment to follow through,” Amy said. “We were ready to work on our house, and Chaz just looked at me and said, ‘This isn’t what we should be doing. We need to go feed people.’” They put out a call for donations and volunteers through email and Facebook before taking their 20-foot trailer to the hard-hit apartments at the corner of Clayton Avenue and Jackson Street. The ministry served 250 lunch plates that day. The trailer was relocated to Oak Ridge Christian Church off of Joyner Avenue for lunch and dinner the next six days, serving 4,500 additional meals. “I just couldn’t believe the number of peo-
ple who came out to help,” Chaz said. “People brought out their kids to help deliver meals, and some just walked up who had never heard of us [but] were looking for a way to help.” Donations came in the same way. The Kirbys used all of their funds for food that first day, and although they spent the week not knowing what would be served at the next meal, supplies kept coming. Donations ranged from individuals offering $20 or a case of water to a food donation from Cooper Tire that fed almost 800 people. The Kirbys will reside in a hotel until their home is repaired but their temporary relocation won’t affect their community service. The couple plans for 25/35 Ministries to help feed the army of volunteers coming into town with disaster relief organizations Eight Days of Hope and World Changers in July.
“Our little trailer isn’t done cooking for those who need it. The debris is clearing, and lots of people are waiting on insurance to rebuild, but they still need our prayers and help.” -Chaz Kirby June/July 2014 | INVITATION TUPELO

REFLECT
REBUILD
“We talk about the Tupelo Spirit a lot, but that phrase didn’t exist until 1936. What we call the Tupelo Spirit came about because of how the people responded to that tornado. We’re having a rebirth of that spirit now. Every meeting and talk has been about how we can get through this and build back together to make it better… and that’s from the neighborhoods hit the hardest.” -Mayor Jason Shelton “We ran our regular route through the path of the destruction, and those neighborhoods came out in full force to support the run. A lot of the runners were just in awe of these people standing in their front yards with trees down and tarps on the roof to cheer them on. It really showed the spirit of our city.” -Andy Hughes, director of the May 10 GumTree Run
“I’ve had a storm house for 34 years and never used it before this one. In the long run, I think it’ll have a positive effect on our history, like the 1936 tornado did. Tupelo always takes four or five steps forward for every one back, and it’s already bonded our community together again.” -Dick Hill, Tupelo resident
“There’s still such a need. I don’t think people day to day realize how deep it goes. It takes a long time to get back on your feet from something like this, and we can’t abandon the people in need because a little time has passed.” -Janie Williams, intake/inventory coordinator at the Multi-Agency Warehouse at 1031 S. Green St.
“There was no pressure to dismiss that morning … but we’ve gotten lots of thank-yous for that response. We monitored the weather until the last minute to make that decision. The buses had already made it home to unload, and our teachers were home to take care of their own families just in time.” -Gearl Loden, Tupelo Public School District superintendent
“I was 7 when the tornado hit in ’36 … There were trees everywhere like now … This one was almost the same path. The death toll then was [more than 200]. I still don’t understand how we came out at zero this time.”
-vOz Vanelli, owner of Vanelli’s Restaurant

INVITATION TUPELO | June/July 2014
Volunteers from near and far are making plans to assist Tupelo this summer. Some planned events include: TOUCHDOWNS FOR TORNADO RELIEF Proceeds from a one-day football camp for children ages 7-12 will raise money for the Create Foundation’s Tornado Relief Fund. Camp takes place June 28 with registration at 7:30 a.m. and camp kicking off at 9 a.m. Registration is $30. For more information, visit touchdownsfortornadorelief.com. EIGHT DAYS OF HOPE Tupelo-based nonprofit recovery organization Eight Days of Hope, which has rebuilt nearly 1,500 homes around the country following natural disasters, has sprung into action. The group is rallying its national network of volunteers and will be in Tupelo July 12-19 to rebuild neighborhoods. To sign up to help or for more information on the group’s mission, visit eightdaysofhope.com.
-Bill Lyle, Tupelo resident
“I am humbled by all of the expressions of goodwill by the entire community and public officials and government agencies assisting all of us impacted by this tornado. All I can say is it is our intention to rebuild, but our plans are undefined until we finish details with our insurance. That’s where a lot of us stand right now.”
Roddy Thompson and Kelly Bowers clear trees from the rooftop of a home in the Joyner neighborhood.
A service was held in Fairpark May 8 to bring the community together to pray in response to the April 28 tornado.
WORLD CHANGERS World Changers organizes mission trips for church youth groups from around the country, and they are bringing youth groups to Tupelo July 21-26 to assist with rebuilding efforts. To learn more, visit lifeway.com/ worldchangers.

TUPELO SPIRIT Matt Laubhan
Pictured with Laubhan are WTVA meteorologists Dick Rice, Kara James and John Dolusic.
WTVA’s chief meteorologist saved lives with his forthright reporting and urgent on-the-air evacuation of the WTVA studio during the April 28 tornado.
Q: When did you know you had to go to the basement?
A: The Friday before, we had a staff talk about strategy and sheltering in case of emergency for the first time ever. Because of that, the basement was cleared that week. Most of the crew was already down there when the tornado warning came. The second wave went in at the nonessential-personnel call. I heard the tower creaking in the winds and knew it wouldn’t take the tornado hitting the station for the rest of us. I thought, “You have a baby girl who needs a daddy.” That did it. No job is more important than your life. I was only in there about a minute because I knew it should have passed over by then. I couldn’t stand the thought that people could die because I was down there and this storm was still going.

INVITATION TUPELO | June/July 2014
Q: Is there a protocol for when you have to
Q: You’ve been interviewed since on CNN and
take cover?
the Today show. You’re all over the Internet. What’s the fame like? A: The whole thing is bizarre and totally undeserved. I stand in front of these monitors every day and did nothing different that day. I would trade all that in a heartbeat to take the tornadoes away.
A: There’s no regulation on that. It’s on one of us to make the decision. I’ve never done it before, but that’s the closest I’ve ever come to a tornado.
Q: How did the team work together that day? A: It was all damage control when we came up. We were on backup generator. We were still on the air, but people with cable and satellite were having trouble seeing us because a line was cut. People with an old-school antenna could still get us, and we were doing everything we could to make sure we could get out on KZ103 and the Internet. The radar was down for almost an hour, so I was on the phone with the National Weather Service in Memphis to keep updates going. Our Internet was down so we had people tweeting and posting to Facebook from their cell phones. [WTVA meteorologist] John [Dolusic]’s house in Joyner was hit, and he still remained calm and dedicated.
Q: What’s the best response you’ve gotten from the community? A: I’ve cried with more grown men in the past weeks than in my life. There are so many people who have come up and thanked me for saving their lives. There’s no greater compliment anyone can give you in this industry than that, but I didn’t save them. They did by respecting the tornado that day. interviewed by Melanie Crownover photographed by Joe Worthem
