s we looked around to find hidden treasures for this month’s cover story, we found a few right under our noses and others a little farther away. It was indeed a trip down memory lane for me while we selected places to highlight. I found myself thinking back and wishing the Harvest Café was still here. I even did some calling around to find out if anyone knew how or where I could get apricot strudel like they used to serve at the original location of James Food Center. Though I sometimes wish those memorable treasures were still around, it turns out Oxford and the surrounding area still have plenty of hidden gems to explore. For this issue, we uncovered the Downstairs Bar, where down a secluded alley off the

Square, you can find one of the tastiest latenight grilled cheese sandwiches in Oxford. And you don’t have to travel far for an experience that will be both educational and appetizing when you visit Double L Auction barn. You can go to learn about livestock and stay for a delicious fresh steak. It’s a bit off the beaten path but worth the drive east for an experience not to forget. Whether you find that special place or unforgettable meal right on the Square or a few miles down the highway, we hope you will enjoy the adventure – and perhaps the memories – this treasure hunt will bring.

THE PRISON WRITES INITIATIVE written by Ginny McCarley photographed by Joe Worthem
The Mississippi State Penitentiary, commonly called Parchman Farm, seems an unlikely literary enclave, yet students in Louis Bourgeois’ writing class devour essays, poetry and philosophy by writers ranging from Malcolm X to Margaret Atwood before crafting their own narratives for publication. The class is part of the Prison Writes Initiative run by Vox Press Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Oxford. The program began in January of 2014 and has since expanded to include five classes in correctional facilities across the state. “People who had never even thought about writing, had no concept of it, by midterm were churning out 20-, 40-, in some cases 60-page narratives that were just stunning,” Bourgeois said. Stories from the first group of writers were published in Vox’s In Our Own Words: Writing From Parchman Prison, a collection of narratives ranging from tragic to touching. Gregory Frazier, an inmate serving a 20year sentence for aggravated assault, writes lyrically of summer days spent in the Mississippi Delta on Snake Creek. The carefree milieu is shattered when the family moves to Cleveland, where his mother struggles to support eight children, and his youngest nephew, Toby, dies of pneumonia complications. “Gone was the sound of the flowing creek and the night creatures that formed its orchestra. Gone was the sight of the large trees
20
INVITATION OXFORD | March 2016
that danced to the beats of the spring winds,” Frazier wrote. This semester, Frazier has delved deeper into prose poetry, particularly The Cantos by Ezra Pound. “He loved it. He just took off with it,” Bourgeois said. “That’s the point of education, particularly philosophy – to shine a light in a dark place. It’s really amazing to find people who never even have a literary background … when they see it, when they catch onto it, it’s like finding a new continent. It’s an amazing kind of experience.” The experience is therapeutic as well. At the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (commonly called Pearl, for the closest city), approximately 80 percent of the women in the class are serving time for murder and will never be released. “These are mothers. These are people who have children who they’ll never be reunited with, and they write about that stuff,” Bourgeois said. “One lady said that was the best she felt in years when she finally just got it all out.” The class is extremely popular at Pearl, with a waiting list for every open slot. “They were starving for a creative writing class, and they were so grateful that someone was offering one,” Bourgeois said. Johnny Snow, a student at Parchman, noted in his course evaluation that the class helped him process difficult emotions in a positive way. “[The class] has helped me by allowing me to write out a lot of my intimate and emotional feelings that I’ve been holding inside for a long time, relieving a lot of depression and stress, being a very positive ventilation outlet for me,” Snow wrote. The inmates are not the only ones noticing the impact. Because of the clear benefits, Parchman asked Bourgeois to open a class in Unit 29, which houses the most violent criminals. Mississippi does not currently allocate any money for prison writing programs, but Vox receives funding from the Mississippi Humanities Council, which recently awarded Bourgeois the prestigious Humanities Educator Award. “[The Mississippi Humanities Council] believed in this project from the very beginning, and we’re very appreciative of the support they’ve given us,” Bourgeois said.
Bourgeois believes one of the most important benefits of the class for students is achieving a feeling of human dignity. “Just offering human worth is important,” Bourgeois said. “Some of these people were told their whole lives that they’re worthless.” To order a copy of In Our Own Words: Writing From Parchman Prison, go to amazon .com or voxpress.org. Vox Press is set to publish a second book from the program this year.

SALAD DRESSING written by Sunny Young Baker photographed by Joe Worthem
C
laudiaette Goliday has helped serve Oxford schoolchildren lunches since 1991. As Oxford High School’s cafeteria manager, she is responsible for helping plan the menu, order food and feed around 500 students daily. “The part I like most about it is working with my awesome team and watching the students enjoy our food,” Goliday said. She is especially proud to serve fresh vegetables, which she came to love by growing up with a backyard garden. “The only things we cooked at home were things we could grow in our garden,” Goliday said. “If we did not plant it and harvest it ourselves, we didn’t eat it.” That is why Goliday is excited about the new salad bar that was installed last year in the high school’s cafeteria. She has seen more and more students making healthier lunch choices. “I love the fact that we now serve more fruits and vegetables and that students walk away with a beautiful, colorful plate,” she said. Students are especially interested in the salad bar when homemade salad dressings are on the line. The school district has started making almost all salad dressings from scratch, including
22
INVITATION OXFORD | March 2016
Goliday’s Sweet and Sour Salad Dressing. “The students love something that is homemade, like ‘grandma’ recipes,” she said. According to Goliday, the dressing is a tastier and healthier alternative to overly processed packaged dressings the school was receiving in the past. The simple recipes also help show students the benefits of eating locally, through ingredients like the local honey featured in the Sweet and Sour Dressing recipe, which Goliday says is great for relieving seasonal allergies. “Our students are starting to look at food now as ‘How can this help my body?’” she said.
Mrs. Claudiaette’s Sweet and Sour Dressing 1/4 cup local honey 1/4 cup mayonnaise* 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice (may use unsweetened concentrate) 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Add all ingredients to mixing bowl. Mix well using a wire whisk or electric mixer. Chill for 20 minutes before serving. Yield: 4 servings (2 ounces each) *Sub light mayo, or replace half the mayo with plain yogurt for a lower-calorie option.

AND greet Auction Block Steakhouse, located inside the Double L Auction barn, is serving up more than just fresh rib-eyes and burgers; it’s dishing out an authentic experience. written by Melanie Crownover photographed by Joe Worthem
Auction Block Steakhouse, run by Summer and Ryan Bramlett (pictured top right with daughter Sydnei), serves fresh steaks, hamburgers, fried fish and more every Thursday-Saturday night. The restaurant is especially busy the first Saturday of every month, when diners can see the horses coming in for the monthly sale at the adjacent Double L Auction barn.
Nestled halfway down Highway 278 between Oxford and Tupelo in Thaxton, passersby might not peg the Auction Block Steakhouse as an ideal destination for a weekend dinner spot. But this steakhouse lobby is packed every Thursday through Saturday night, especially the first Saturday of every month, when the horse sale happens. “You know that old steakhouse joke that goes ‘Just run the cow by the table’ when someone hungry is ordering? Well, here we almost do,” said Summer Bramlett, who co-owns
the restaurant with husband Ryan. “We have people who come in and ask if we butcher our own in the back, but that’s not quite it.” The meat served in the restaurant is locally sourced and brought to the Auction Block restaurant, which is located inside the Double L Auction barn, a livestock sale site open since 2011. Burgers are available for lunch each Monday during the cattle sale, but it’s the weekend dinners that have customers licking their chops. The fare is Western steakhouse meets
down-home dining room: Signature Angus ribeye and burgers, along with fish and chicken entrées, are served on black plates with copper cutlery, sweet tea in oversized Mason jars and homemade desserts, such as old-fashioned caramel layer cake and Twinkie cake piled high. Outside the restaurant and into the auction house, buyers file into the arena for the cattle and horse sales. The repurposed stadium-style seating – like much of the walls, decorative windows and wainscoting in the building – came from a torn-down Mantachie March 2016 | INVITATION OXFORD

schoolhouse. Employees say the history in the timber and glass perfectly matches the rustic décor, from the black-and-white family photos and tin-tiled ceiling in the restaurant to the well-used antiques scattered about the lobby and the mounted steer’s head in the arena. “It’s kind of historic anyway,” said arena operations manager Mark Carnes. “When our boss built it he wanted it to be a place built for farmers by farmers where anyone could get a fair deal on livestock because there’s usually a lot of the buddy system in our business. And most of the other auctions have concession stands, not steakhouses.” While ranchers from states around the Southeast fill up the restaurant, workers load livestock behind the arena. The cattle travel from the covered pens outside down a gated alley called the “no back” shoot, a walkway leading them one-by-one through the scale doors and into the indoor arena to be weighed and sold by the pound. The Double L is one of the only local
46
INVITATION OXFORD | March 2016
auction houses where livestock are weighed before the buy, and efforts are made to make the whole operation as humane and stress-free for the animals as possible. The state-of-the-art gating system is designed to motivate movement, so the use of cattle prods is prohibited. “When our barn burned, we looked at several places before we came to them to lease a space for our auction,” West Point Stockyards owner Billy Scott said. “I’ve made sales all over Mississippi and Alabama, but their arena is probably the nicest I’ve ever been in. They’re great to team up with, and the cattle almost work themselves into the building because of how they have it set up.” The Double L Auction has gone from almost shutting down to bustling since they leased the arena to Horsemen Central almost a year ago for a recurring horse sale the first Saturday of each month. The upward trend only multiplied when West Point signed on in November 2015 to hold their weekly cattle sale. Now the Double L staff sees approxi-
mately 250 head of cattle through the pens each week instead of just 50 every quarter, and the horse auction brings in buyers from all over the country. With business booming, the Bramletts hope to one day extend the hours of the restaurant and are currently working on updating their menu. Larger portions and meatier selections, such as a 24-ounce steak, are in the works, thanks to the popularity of the auctions and an increase in business. And the added draw of the auction makes waiting for a table on a busy weekend a little easier to endure for patrons, even for those not looking to take home an animal. “A lot of people don’t realize we actually have a livestock auction here until they visit on the right weekend and see them loading the horses while they’re waiting,” Bramlett said. “The kids crowd around the catwalk, and that gives the grown-ups an excuse to peek before they get seated. Around here, it’s never your average meal out.”
Double L Auction holds weekly cattle sales every Monday at 2 p.m. and monthly horse sales the first Saturday of every month. Owner Lawrence Lindsay (pictured top left) and his operations manager, Mark Carnes, see almost 250 head of cattle through the pens every week, including livestock from West Point Stockyards (owner Billy Scott is pictured left). Much of the interior of the auction barn, including the stadium-style seating, is made of repurposed materials from a torn-down Mantachie schoolhouse.

come
AS YOU ARE
Worship doesn’t come in an average one-size-fits-all package at the Hayseed Cowboy Church (next door to Double L Auction barn) on Highway 76. Sunday morning’s casual dress code means cowboy hats, caps, jeans and boots. The praise band’s brand of contemporary Christian music has a lot more twang than usual. And fellowship time often involves roping and riding following the devotional when the weather allows, because most members are farmers and ranchers. “I think the thing that stands out about us most is that we focus on outreach instead of in-reach,” Pastor Joey Moody said. “Everything we have is Jesus-centered with Western flavor and open to anyone.” This nondenominational church started with a small Bible study four years ago, and now they host around 150 members and their guests each service. The Double L Auction barn has been instrumental in helping the church grow. For two years, the congregation met there, but in 2014 the Hayseed Cowboy Church built their current barn-style worship center behind the Dollar General, next door to the auction house. Their open-door policy is especially evident at the annual Halloween barrel race/team roping event, held at the Pontotoc County Agri-Center, and the Fourth of July ranch rodeo at the Double L’s outdoor arena, both of which drew almost 500 people in 2015. The group still holds a weekly Friday night ministry with riding events at the Double L in the spring and fall, a time to study and bond outside the pews. “People ask all the time what a cowboy church is and why even have it,” said Greta Moody, the pastor’s wife. “I tell them that it’s come-as-you-are worship the way it’s supposed to be. It may seem different to some, but it’s a good kind of different.”

A late-night speakeasy, a 19th-century cemetery and an off-the-menu dessert are just a few secrets waiting to be discovered in and around Oxford. written by Kate Lechler
Secrets and treasures abound near
and in Oxford. Sometimes they’re tucked away along a winding road; other times they may be in plain sight. Some can be found on a map; others are known only by word-of-mouth. However they are uncovered, these gems are worth exploring. Hidden away on a back road in Sardis, off Highway 315, is the Backwoods Bar, a honky-tonk saloon in the middle of the woods. Miranda and Mark Brown have owned it for five
illustrated by Laurie G. Fisher
years but took over the management last July. The Backwoods Bar serves beer and bar food, including the signature appetizer, the Bacon Bomb, a mix of biscuit dough, bacon and mozzarella cheese. The bar is located in Panola County, whose liquor laws prohibit them from selling any liquor, but patrons can bring in their own favorite libations for a cover fee. Along with traditional parlor games like pool and darts, there’s also a punching bag and beer pong tables for entertainment. On the
weekends, Backwoods turns into a dance party with a Friday night DJ and local bands such as the Whiskey Barrels playing on Saturdays. “The best thing about this place is the laidback atmosphere,” Miranda said. “Everyone has a good time.” While most bars and restaurants in downtown Oxford are front and center, the Square is not without its secret spots. In an alley named for one of Oxford’s most famous denizens is the entrance to the Downstairs Bar, Oxford’s March 2016 | INVITATION OXFORD

only speakeasy. Open at 10 p.m. WednesdaysSaturdays, its exact location remains publicly undisclosed; to find it, one must ask around. Owner Jim Bulian started it almost three years ago, hoping to provide a quiet place on the Square and to maintain an air of mystery. “As I get older, I want different things from my bar experience,” Bulian said. “Now I want solace.” The Downstairs Bar, which only hosts 25 patrons at a time, is designed with quietude and intimacy in mind. The unassuming alleyway
54

entrance leads to a dimly lit space decorated with paintings and antiques that evoke the early 20th century. Bulian permanently reserves one table for William Faulkner, furnished with an antique Underwood typewriter and a can of tobacco. The Downstairs Bar is known for its handcrafted cocktails – often mixed with Bulian’s own vodka label, Artist Vodka – and its gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. Quietude isn’t limited to the bar scene, though. For people interested in history, genealogy, or just a pleasant afternoon wandering
among gravestones, Oxford is home to several unique, out-of-the-way cemeteries. One of the oldest is the Buckner-Craig-Isom cemetery, also known as the Founders’ Cemetery. Tucked in a small plot of land on Old Taylor Road, this small cemetery is ringed with tall trees and features flat gravestones with beautiful carvings. Several of the early settlers of Lafayette County are buried here, with graves dating back to 1837. Another important Oxford cemetery resides on the campus of the University of Mis-
BATESVILLE, MISSISSIPPI
sissippi. Just up the hill behind the C.M. Tad Smith Coliseum, a large, carefully groomed plot of land features a tall stone monument in the center. This monument memorializes hundreds of Confederate soldiers who died after the Battle of Shiloh. The university buildings became hospitals for the wounded. Those who succumbed to their wounds are buried there, sheltered by a low brick wall. A couple of miles past the city limit, College Hill Presbyterian Church, erected in 1844, sits in a grove of cedars just off Highway 102.
56
INVITATION OXFORD | March 2016
Behind this white-columned brick building is the church’s cemetery, which contains graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers and slave burial sites. The monuments in this cemetery are carved with images of trees, obelisks, wreaths and plaques. They are some of the oldest and most ornate gravestones in the area. There are also plenty of delicious secrets to lure adventure seekers back to the land of the living. Although Oxford is known for its great dining, only insiders know about certain items at various restaurants. One of these is the
Pies-Cream Sandwich at Ajax Diner. Invented by Oxford High School teacher Joe Sabatier, this dish consists of a slice of pecan pie, covered with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with a slice of chocolate chess pie facedown. “It was invented to solve the dilemma of wanting two different kinds of pie,” Sabatier said. Another little-known delicacy is the Rotel spaghetti at Mama Jo’s Country Cookin’ on North Lamar. Popular with regulars for about 15 years, the dish consists of cream of chicken

soup, Rotel, Velveeta, American cheese and a mixture of veggies, all cooked together with spaghetti noodles. The Trash is on the After-Five menu at one of Oxford’s newest additions, the Neon Pig. With its flagship restaurant in Tupelo, Neon Pig is best known for its Smash burger. But its Trash, a ¾-pound hamburger steak, made of a combination of ground aged filet, rib-eye, sirloin and New York strip and topped with pickled onions, corn, arugula and a farm egg, is equally delicious, if not quite as famous. Laws Hill Fish House in Holly Springs is
58

a local favorite of those lucky enough to know about it. The restaurant, which used to be called Edwin’s, has been around for about 50 years. Sue Day took it over from her great aunt and uncle 13 years ago. “My parents used to bring me here from Memphis when I was just a little girl,” she said. Day is especially proud of the crab legs, which aren’t on the menu but are popular with regulars. But it’s the catfish, brought in fresh from the Delta daily, that the restaurant is famous for. For nearly 30 years, Torie MarionWhite has gone to Laws Hill Fish House
almost every Sunday with her family for that special dish. “Even with all the years I’ve been going there, I only order the catfish,” Marion-White said. “It’s that good.” There’s much more to Laws than just great food. Marion-White appreciates the tradition of getting out of town, driving to Holly Springs and eating lunch at a place with family-friendly service and a special atmosphere. “You can take your family and be around people who know you,” she said. “It just feels like home.”

TAKING the
REINS
Last year, the University of Mississippi was the only SEC school without an equestrian team. One incoming college freshman decided to change that. written by Lanie Anderson photographed by Joe Worthem
Colleen Stimola, pictured at left with horse Jelly, founded the Ole Miss Equestrian Club. The team has more than 30 members and this spring will participate in five competitions in both Western- and English-style horseback riding under the guidance of coaches Beanie Cone and Kevin McDavitt.
In August 2014, Colleen Stimola
moved more than 1,200 miles from her hometown in Connecticut to attend the University of Mississippi. Horseback riding was what she missed most about her New England home, and at the time Ole Miss was the only school in the Southeastern Conference without an equestrian team. The freshman decided to take the reins and start one. Today the Ole Miss Equestrian Club has 30 young women on its roster and participated in its first competition, hosted by Georgia College, on Feb. 6-7. But creating the team required a great deal of Stimola’s time and energy. Over her winter break as a freshman, Stimola, with the assistance of her parents, fulfilled requirements to start the equestrian club team, wrote bylaws for its constitution and brainstormed ways to recruit members. When
she returned to campus in January 2015, Stimola hung flyers in the student union, library and academic buildings. She was overwhelmed by the response. “Within the week, I had 20 people sign up [for the club],” Stimola said. “A lot of people emailed me. They were so excited and wanted to get involved.” After members joined the club team, Stimola faced another dilemma: The team needed coaches. Because Ole Miss does not have the facilities or horses needed for practices, Stimola had to find coaches for both Western- and English-style horseback riding who would also share their training facilities. The styles differ mainly in their respective courses: Western riding includes reining, while English riding involves more jumps. “I wanted this team to be really competi-
tive,” Stimola said. “I wanted to rival some of the other SEC schools, so if we wanted to be a good team, we needed good facilities and excellent coaches.” Two coaches rose to the challenge. Beanie Cone of Hunters Edge Stables in Memphis, Tennessee, currently coaches English-style riders on the club team, and Kevin McDavitt of McDavitt Stables in Senatobia coaches Western-style riders. Cone has coached many Ole Miss students during his 17 years as a trainer, and he encouraged them over the years to start an equestrian team at the university. He knew a club team had to start with the students’ initiative, so Cone was excited when Stimola asked him to be one of the team’s coaches. “I love getting this program up and running and watching these students excel at what March 2016 | INVITATION OXFORD
61
they’re doing,” Cone said. “I know they miss horseback riding and the trainers from their hometowns. They come to me, and I can tell that they are back into [riding] again.” Last fall, the equestrian club team officially started practices with its new coaches. During the first week of practice, the team had lessons so that Cone and McDavitt could assess skill levels. Then Stimola and the team created a practice schedule that allowed them to carpool in groups to the stables a couple of times a week. “We have two to three people at each practice,” Stimola said. “This way, our coaches can really focus on the riders and critique them. We also grouped them according to skill level.” The team currently uses horses and equipment owned by the stables. Stimola’s long-term focus for the Ole Miss Equestrian Club is to have facilities on campus, and the sophomore is continuously looking for donors and opportunities to raise money. “Having facilities on campus will be my goal until I graduate,” Stimola said. “I’m constantly thinking about and working on that because that takes money, land, contractors and equipment.” Until then, Cone said he does not mind the team using his facilities because they bring a positive energy to the stables and are good stewards of the horses and equipment. Offcampus practices also give the riders a break from the stresses of college life. “These girls drive an hour to me,” Cone said. “They hop out of their cars, and they are smiling and in a good mood. They are able to get away from school and the books to come out to the barn where they just enjoy being around the animals and the farm.” The Ole Miss Equestrian Club is currently in the middle of its first season, but Stimola already feels a sense of victory in seeing the team come to fruition. “It’s been a lot of work,” Stimola said. “But it’s nice when you put a lot of work into something and it pays off, which this definitely has.” To make a donation to help fund an oncampus practice facility, go to gofundme.com/ olemissequestrian.

A taste OF THE
BIG APPLE
On a recent trip to New York, staff photographer Joe Worthem captured the excitement and flavor of the city. photographed by Joe Worthem
INVITATION MAGAZINES’ STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Joe Worthem, along with his brother and a friend, hit the streets of New York City last fall. Instead of the typical agenda packed with art museums and popular tourist sites, the travel buddies opted to wander without an itinerary. “We just decided on an area and headed there, but along the way we stopped to check out anything and everything that caught our attention,” Worthem said. “The idea was to just explore various neighborhoods rather than specific places. I think that you can really get a feel for the city that way.” The group did choose to visit some famous destinations, such as Central Park (pictured on opposite page) but did so with a unique perspective. “This is an area where people can climb up rocks and boulders and look out over a section of the park. “TO WALK DOWN THE STREETS OF NEW YORK is to be hit by a torrent of sights, sounds and smells,” Worthem said. “On every corner, in certain areas, is a little unique shop, restaurant or bakery selling something that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. The food scene is world class, but the best food is usually at the holein-the-wall restaurants that, in many cases, are better than the big-name places.” Worthem was especially drawn to the many markets around the city, including a spice shop located inside Chelsea Market and an art market that has booths of locally produced art, handbags, jewelry and more.

WITH CAMERA IN HAND, Worthem focused on casually capturing the city in its most authentic state and without force. While on a Circle Line boat tour that took the group around Manhattan Island, Worthem photographed New York’s famous architecture, including a waterfront skyline and a view from under one of NYC’s many bridges. But it was back on land where Worthem took his favorite shots. “The thing that stood out the most to me about the city is the hustle, the energy of the city, the people and the sheer amount of things that are going on at any time,” he said. “I have been to a lot of different cities, and each one has its own vibe. Each one is uniquely beautiful. New York, however, literally has a beautiful moment around every corner, from buildings to some random moment on the street that presents a great photo opportunity.”

JAMES G. THOMAS JR. interviewed by Meaghin Burke photographed by Joe Worthem
James G. Thomas Jr. is the associate director for publications at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and director of the Oxford Conference for the Book, being held March 2-4. He recently published the book Conversations with Barry Hannah. Q: How did you get involved with the Conference for the Book? A: I started working at Square Books in 1991, which is where I first met Barry Hannah. In 1993, Square Books co-sponsored the first Oxford Conference for the Book with the Center for the Study of Southern Culture. Barry was one of the readers that year. So things have come full circle, in a way. Q: What is the conference like? A: It’s a three-day conference and an opportunity for people who love books to interact with authors in some social settings, to hear them speak about their own works and then read from those same works.
Q: What are some of the activities planned? A: There are four social events that are tied to it. All but one are free. The Friday sessions are going to be in the courthouse. That’s not a place that people think to spend time, but Faulkner wrote about it; it’s the center of Oxford. We’ll have an event at the University Museum. We’ll have an opening lecture and luncheon in Special Collections of the J.D. Williams Library. A lot of folks in town have never been to the third floor. There is a great reading room. Q: Can you tell us about your book, Conversations with Barry Hannah? A: The book is a compilation of 18 interviews with Barry from 1980 to 2010. I consider the volume to be an autobiographical narrative. I was lucky enough to take creative writing classes from Barry in the early ’90s, so in making this book, it was wonderful to be in his presence again. It’s a great opportunity to hear his voice again, and to introduce it to others.

Let’s fight colon cancer together. Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. If you’re 50 years old or older, getting a screening test for colorectal cancer could save your life, either by finding precancerous polyps or detecting cancer early enough for treatment. So for your sake — and your family’s — contact your physician and schedule a screening today.
