LETTER FROM
T
here’s something about the fall I enjoy more than any other time of year. I think it has to do with the beauty of the sunlight at dawn and dusk, which is captured on the cover of this magazine. The image reminds me that the time has come to get outside and celebrate slightly cooler autumn temperatures, whether on a bike trail, a golf course, a football field or in your own backyard. Be sure to look through our fashion section beginning on page 19 where you’ll find some of the hottest styles of the season. We hope it helps our readers get wardrobe-ready for both high school and college football games. There’s something there for everyone. Don’t miss the story on page 52 about cyclist Adam Morris. Morris spends the weekdays welding and his weekends racing bikes. His love for the sport has transformed him physically, and his dedication to cycling is inspiring. Our staff photographer Joe Worthem captured breathtaking photos of Morris that we are excited to share. You won’t want to miss his story which is just as exciting as his bright blue mohawk. Another Tupelo-area sports legend is gearing up for a big benefit taking place later this fall. Dave Clark has been in Major League Baseball for more than 30 years, first as a player and now as a base coach. Last year he helped put on the first Dave Clark Celebrity

“We believe an addict, any addict, can be delivered and restored to abundant life through a union with Jesus Christ,” said Gary Dawson, pastor at Broken Lives.
HOW THEY HELP Founder Shane Scribner started the ministry a year ago in a rented warehouse building in east Tupelo. Already more than 200 men have been residents, and nearly 40 have graduated from the four-month program. The residents participate in daily 6 a.m. devotionals, Bible study classes and work therapy that includes tending a large garden and volunteer work around the community.
DONATE The mission is funded entirely by donations. During the past year, donors have given money, clothes, food, Bibles and their time. According to Dawson, the most pressing needs today are gasoline for vehicles, money to pay the electric bill and assistance with maintenance on the building. They also need large-print Bibles and Bible study materials.
LEARN MORE To seek help or get more information on Broken Lives, call 662-260-4171. Monetary donations can be mailed to Broken Lives, 3019 Highway 178, Tupelo, MS 38804.

IN SEASON Muscadines
WRITTEN BY Melanie Crownover | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem
F
ormer AT&T lineman Lonnie Neaves of Saltillo, Miss., enjoys his summer harvest year-round, especially when it comes to muscadines. His freezer is full of the Southern grapes and their juice, and his pantry teems with jars of homemade muscadine jelly. Neaves, 65, works 2 acres with his nextdoor neighbors. Traditional Southern produce such as peas, corn and tomatoes covers much of the plot, but muscadine vines rule a sizable share too. “Bronze, dark blue or reddish pink, I love them all. The sweeter the better. But using them for wine is just a waste of a good berry to me,” he said. “I think we made 160 pints of
16
INVITATION TUPELO | September 2015
muscadine jelly on the two-eye cooker in my shop last year, and I gave most of those away for Christmas presents.” Muscadines aren’t the fruit for impatient gardeners, though. Neaves recommends buying a two-year-old plant from a nursery to plant between January and March. Then prepare to wait at least three years for the first fruits, which should appear in mid-August. A pollinator plant is needed to produce fruit if the breed is not marked as “self-fertile” at the nursery, and those looking to grow jelly grapes should choose varieties with higher sugar content. Neaves believes the sweetest are the wild bronze variety, known as scuppernongs.
All forms of the frost-resistant vines prefer loamy clay soil. They need regular fertilizer and water, but pesticide isn’t usually necessary unless wasps are prevalent. However, animals like deer, birds and raccoons can also present challenges, as they love the sweet berries too. Neaves’ advice? “When they get ripe, you better pick them fast.” “I’ll eat them right off the vine or drink muscadine water all summer. I just have to make sure I save enough berries for later,” Neaves said. “We make this juice that tastes just like you’re eating them off the vine in the middle of winter, and it’s really good to pour into a cobbler mix or make dumplings with.”
Apple-Muscadine Dumplings 1 package crescent rolls 1 large apple 1 cup muscadine juice (see recipe below) ¾ cup sugar 1 stick butter Cinnamon to taste Preheat oven to 325°F. Peel and slice apple into 10 pieces. Roll each slice into a portion of crescent dough until the dough meets. Cut off extra dough. Use excess dough to cover the last 2 pieces of apple. Heat juice on the stovetop over medium heat. Mix sugar and butter into juice while heating. Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Place dumplings in the dish, about 1 inch apart. Pour juice over the dumplings, and sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 10 servings.
Muscadine Juice Fill blender most of the way with ripe, washed muscadines. Blend until all large chunks are chopped. Strain mixture through a colander to remove all hulls, and place in the freezer in a zippered freezer bag. Later thaw mixture for use.
Muscadine Water 1½ cups muscadines, washed 1-quart canning jar ½ cup sugar Water Put washed muscadines in the jar with the sugar. Fill jar with water, leaving 1½ inches at the top. Let the sugar dissolve, and then seal the jar. In two weeks, the combination makes a muscadine-flavored water reminiscent of KoolAid. The mix keeps as long as the seal remains unbroken.

Major League Baseball comes to Tupelo in November for a celebrity golf tournament that benefits local organizations. WRITTEN BY Melanie Crownover PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem
48
INVITATION TUPELO | September 2015
This November’s second annual Dave Clark Celebrity Golf Tournament will benefit the American Red Cross and Regional Rehabilitation Center through tournament fees, sponsorships and a silent auction featuring sports items autographed by college and pro athletes and coaches, including a bat signed by 2015 Home Run Derby winner Todd Frazier.
Tupelo native Dave Clark
has been part of professional baseball as a player and coach for 33 years, but the Detroit Tigers third base coach never approached his co-workers about a fundraiser until last season. “Baseball is like a huge fraternity,” Clark said. “Once they found out what we were doing and why, they were all in. If they couldn’t be here, they were signing merchandise to auction off and help raise money.” As co-founder of a new nonprofit, the Clark and Enis Family Foundation, he had a great cause: to help the people in his hometown bounce back from the recent tornado. The catalyst was the organization’s inaugural Dave Clark Celebrity Golf Tournament and Auction, which raised $7,500 for the local Red Cross last November. The goal for the 2015 tournament is to at least double those proceeds. “Each year we want to split the money raised between the Red Cross and another local organization – this year, Regional Rehab. We
would love to cut them both a $10,000 check, and I think we could do it,” said Josh Enis, a friend of Clark’s and co-founder of the foundation hosting the tournament. “We had people coming up to us on the golf course in June talking about how they couldn’t wait to be a part of this again, and that was five months out.” By that time, six teams were already signed up for the November tournament, and a growing number of local businesses were committing as hole sponsors. Clark and Enis both cited the success of last year’s tournament and auction as the reason for the anticipation. Among the 18 four-man teams last year were celebrity competitors such as current Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier from Fulton, Miss.; Chicago Cubs pitcher Wesley Wright from Alabama; and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Xavier Hall from New Orleans. The auction included a signed bat from retiring New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter,
and already buzz is rising over an autographed bat up for bidding this year from Cincinnati Reds third baseman and 2015 Home Run Derby winner Todd Frazier. Clark also hopes to persuade Texas Rangers first baseman Mitch Mooreland of Amory, Miss., to come home for the tournament. “We’re going to have a lot of players coming back and a lot of great merchandise for auction this time,” Clark said. “I hit up the local boys first and then fan out because they know what kind of difference this can make here. The response this year has been just as good, and we have a ways to go until we play.” The 2015 cocktail party and auction opener is planned for Sunday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in the Tupelo Country Club Ballroom. The shotgun-start, four-man scramble tournament tees off at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the Tupelo Country Club Golf Course. Dave Clark is pictured above during his college baseball days at Jackson State University. He has been in professional baseball since he was drafted in 1983 and now is outfield instructor and third base coach for the Detroit Tigers.
Dave Clark has been a fixture in profes-
sional baseball for more than three decades. After getting his start with the American Legion, Verona Black Sox and Shannon High School in his early years, the Shannon, Miss., native became the MVP and top hitter for Jackson State University his sophomore and junior years. His record earned him a first round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 1983. He spent time in the minors and debuted three years after the draft with the Cleveland Indians as a right fielder. Before his retirement in 1998, Clark played in Chicago, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Houston, building a career batting average of .264 with

284 RBIs and 62 homeruns as an outfielder and pinch hitter. One year post-retirement, Clark began his coaching career, first as a hitting coach for the AAA Nashville Sounds and then for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then he turned to managing. Clark won two league titles and was named manager of the year twice in his six seasons as a minor league manager. He served five seasons as the Houston Astros first base coach and third base coach before taking on his current role as the Detroit Tigers outfield instructor and third base coach. Jackson State University inducted Clark into the JSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

AMATEUR CYCLIST IS A FORCE IN THE REGIONAL RACING CIRCUIT AND AN ADVOCATE FOR BIKE SAFETY. WRITTEN BY Melanie Crownover | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem When the regional Palmer Cycling Team invited Tupelo cyclist Adam Morris to ride with them last year, it was because of his expertise on the bike. “It was all about his last couple of years racing and his personality,” team leader and Olympic medalist Frank Moak said. “His racing is pure performance, he has the wins, and he just gets that team racing isn’t all about him. He’ll do anything for the team to see a blue jersey cross that line. That’s not easy to find.” His cycling career record of 122 races with 21 wins and 47 top-three podium stands is pretty impressive; but perhaps more inspiring is Morris’ backstory. This is only his sixth year as a cyclist. He was 26 years old when he first mounted a racing bike. “I’m a diesel mechanic and welder by trade, and I had gotten way out of shape,” he said. “I started running to lose some weight

and ended up learning to swim and bike to do the King of the Hill Triathlon. You could say it changed my life.” Morris altered his eating habits and began running five days a week and cycling the other two. He traded a four-wheeler for a road bike and went from 208 pounds to 144 within six months. Then he found out how good he was on a bike. Morris won his first bike race at the Oxford Endurance Weekend in August 2010. A month later he suffered a knee injury at the Tupelo Marathon and then a meniscus tear at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. The running injuries led him to focus on cycling. He quickly began progressing up the amateur cycling ranks once he healed. So far this year, Morris is the leading best all-around rider for Mississippi and Louisiana in Category 1 – the highest you can go in

2013: CATEGORY 3 As a Category 3 cyclist Morris races with
elite Category 1 and 2 riders. He wins the Feliciana Road Race with an 84-mile breakaway. He gets into mountain biking, winning the Mississippi State Championship 6 Hour Endurance Race. In cyclocross, he wins the Single Speed State Championship for Mississippi and Louisiana and a bronze medal in the 1, 2, 3 category.
2014: CATEGORY 2 Now ranked in Category 2, Morris wins
second place in the Category 1, 2, 3 Road Race Mississippi/Louisiana State Championship. Another third place in the Cyclocross Mississippi/Louisiana State Championship qualifies him for the 2015 Cyclocross Nationals in Austin, Texas.

racing as an amateur. He has also been successful in mountain biking and cyclocross (in which cyclists race over rough terrain and carry their bicycles over obstacles). “I guess the funny thing is that now I have a normal diet of 5,000-7,000 calories a day just to maintain my optimal power weight of 153,” Morris said. “I have four bikes in my kitchen and no table. It’s like a second job I love too much.” It’s also a year-round commitment. Road race season is February through September, and cyclocross season is October through December. Morris trains by riding 280 to 350 miles a week along the back roads before and after his 45-hour-a-week day job. He makes his training as tough as possible
so races with his team are the fun part. He still also meets with the local cycling club every Tuesday for 25-mile group rides during the summer and takes time out to promote bike safety in the Lee County area. That level of dedication to the sport is one of the things about Morris that Moak, who has been racing for 35 years, says is infectious for the team and for him. “I’d love to go pro, but I may be too old. I’ll just have to see where everything leads,” Morris said. “Right now I’m still having a dream come true every time I race for Palmer. Being able to deliver wins for them is even better. That’s what I want right now.” Interested in cycling? Find tips from Morris on breaking into the sport at invitationtupelo.com.

works on his latest project, weaving electrical cord through holes drilled into a piece of old wagon wood. He checks the tarnished pulley that will anchor the piece to the ceiling and screws light bulbs into three sockets that are covered by a reclaimed Vermont sap bucket that serves as a shade. The walls around him are filled with little trays of organized sockets, wire and screws, while rows of other worn and rusted items line the shelves. As he plugs in the cord to test his creation, the glow from the Edison bulbs reflects in his eyes. He pauses to take the plastic chip he keeps on his keychain out of his pocket – it’s a sobriety coin he was given to mark six months without drugs and alcohol. He’s now been clean for two years, and his new life is full of joy and responsibility as a remarried newlywed, a father to five children, and a J Britt Lighting associate specializing in lighting designs made from reclaimed materials. “I have a passion for using lost things because God gives us all second, third, fourth and fifth chances. I know because this was mine,” he said. “Shining a light through something someone else thought was useless and September 2015 | INVITATION TUPELO

helping people see its worth is part of why I’m still here.” This second-chance job came courtesy of Ability Works in Tupelo, a Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services organization that helps people get into the workforce. The organization offers preparatory classes on topics such as interviewing and résumé building, and it arranges contract work with local businesses.

For Taylor, Ability Works offered a transition after a 90-day addiction rehabilitation at Lifecore Health Group. He worked through Ability Works by day and attended counseling and meetings at night during his last 30 days of treatment. Eleven years of experience as a furniture factory worker got him connected with his new boss at J Britt through their LINCS, or Linking Innovative Networks
of Community Service, program. “LINCS gives our clients a chance to work up to 120 hours with an employer to either get experience or get back out there. We pay the client minimum wage and keep them on our Worker’s Comp, and the super visor there gives us feedback on how they’re doing,” facility manager Tracy Hester said. “They don’t have to stay the full stint, but many

times they stay on after as employees.” Such was the case with Taylor. Although he’d never built a light in his life, watching his dad do carpentry work in his early childhood and later learning electrical work has paid off. Not only did he have the creativity to design new fixtures, but he also had natural talent for repair work. When the LINCS hours were up, he was quickly offered a full-time job doing something he truly enjoyed. “We’ve probably had about 40 workers a year from there since we started with them – there are three with us now,” store owner Britt Caldwell said. “They spend a season of life

with us, and we try to build them up before they leave. But Will was supposed to be here. I consider him a friend that just happens to be my employee.” Now his co-workers and customers brag on Taylor’s ability to make a light out of just about anything. It’s a compliment he also accepts as a challenge. He and Caldwell work together to find forgotten treasures online, at estate sales and other sites to keep a backlog of possibilities for the store’s popular Restoration Collection and Second Chance line, both undeniably influenced by the life of their maker. The collection’s
feature fixtures are made out of everything from rescued globes and film tins to discarded wine bottles. When Taylor works with new staff members, he hopes to share more than his strong work ethic or marketable skills. “Every day I hope they can see where I come from is no different from them. I never thought I would have two days of sobriety when I couldn’t see the way out, but I wouldn’t go back now for anything,” he said. “I want to show them that they don’t have to go back to that life and die either. You just have to focus on the light.”

TUPELO SPIRIT Bill and Taylor Rosenthal
Shannon High School principal Bill Rosenthal feels honored to play golf alongside his son, Taylor, in the Special Olympics. This July, 21-year-old Taylor earned a silver medal in golf at the World Games in Los Angeles. For the full interview, visit invitationtupelo.com.
Q: How long has Taylor been an athlete? A: Forever. I was a football coach at Shannon, so he was in sports from the start. Down syndrome never got in the way of that.
Q: How did Taylor find Special Olympics? A: As he got older, it became obvious that we would have to find somewhere he could compete besides the Parks and Rec leagues. He started with Special Olympics when he was 8.
Q: Did he stay involved with other sports? A: Oh, yeah. We found the [therapeutic recreational] Challenger League, and he started going to that. Now he’s with them in softball, soccer, basketball and swimming. Tupelo Parks and Rec has made that and Special Olympics a big deal for people like Taylor in our area.
Q: How did he progress to the World Games? A: In October of 2013 he went to New Jersey for the National Invitational Golf Tournament and won gold. Then he won gold at the National Games in New Jersey this June.
Q: How does unified sports work in golf? A: They have partners [to play alternate shot with]. I’m Taylor’s. He tees on odd-numbered holes and after he hits his shot, I hit next and so on until it goes into the hole. I’m honored to just be on the course with him competing.
Q: Does he enjoy the limelight? A: He just loves to play. There were cameras on every tee box and putt in L.A., but that fazed me a lot more than him. His focus is the game. interviewed by Melanie Crownover photographed by Lisa Roberts
