editor’s letter

MY, HOW MOM HAS CHANGED Sometimes my friends and I talk about how when we were young our moms seemed so old to us. My recollection of my grandmother, who passed away at 48, is of a tiny little Italian lady (4’10”, to be exact) with twinkling green eyes and an infectious smile, wearing a housecoat while mixing up apple cake batterr in the kitchen. (Or waving her fists in the air and chasing the neighbor’s kid after having witnessed him pulling my hair through the window.) She was everything to us—just as wee want our grandmas to be. This was about 45 years ago. Today, most of the 48-year-old old women I know look closer to 35, rocking glamorous hair and fit bodies, Louboutins and skinny jeans. They are moms to younger children as well as grown children, and can juggle 100 things at a time. They have businesses, blogs, degrees, and can take care of themselves; they’re single or married— whichever they choose—and they have blown to bits the concept that we as women can’t have it all. Because as it turns out, yes—we can. Every year in this issue we preface Mother’s Day by featuring a few examples of such fabulous women in our

26 inWESTON MAGAZINE

“Moms That Rock” feature (p. 78). It’s always a lot of fun to not only hear their perspectives on motherhood but also to see them with their children, which only reinforces how many fantastic women there are here in our midst. We also pay tribute to Mother’s Day with our Mother’s Day Gift Guide, which offers up some interesting options that might not occur to you when you’re trying to come up with an original idea; that can be found on p. 106. And then, of course, we turn to the onset of Spring (or what passes for it here in South Florida—the temps rocket to mid-80s from mid-70s overnight) and look at ideas for Spring makeup and beauty, as well as fashion that’s sure to kick your wardrobe up a notch. Or even Mom’s wardrobe. Because these days, style knows no age limits. Enjoy the issue.

Viva la Spain Purificación Garcia opens a boutique in South Florida. Spanish designer Purificación Garcia has been around the world and back—born in Spain, she grew up in Uruguay, lived in Canada for two years in her 20s, followed by a year in New York before heading back to Spain and ultimately, opening her first boutique in Belgium. All that time, Garcia was cultivating her knowledge of her true passion: fashion. DRIVING THE MARKET

“The population in South Florida doubles during the winter, and while they’re here, they’re buying and servicing cars. That’s one of the reasons we sell so many more cars per dealer than anywhere else in the country—the population supports it.

MORE THAN A BILLION DOLLARS IN SALES LAST YEAR ISN’T SLOWING DOWN RICK CASE. HE’S JUST CHRISTENED ANOTHER DEALERSHIP—THIS TIME, THE LARGEST KIA DEALERSHIP IN THE WORLD—RIGHT HERE IN BROWARD COUNTY. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

In addition to boasting the world’s largest Honda, Hyundai and Volkswagen dealerships, which just happen to be located in West Broward, Rick Case can now add Kia to that list. “We have more than 600 cars inside under showroom lights, both new and used,â€? says Case of the new Kia dealership, located on Sunrise Blvd. at the Sawgrass Expressway, which also houses the company’s new national headquarters. “It’s a great location that’s easily accessible. We’re surrounded by ďŹ ve other dealers, so it’s the right place, but our inventory simply can’t be matched.â€? And that’s exactly what the Rick Case Automotive Group has come to be known for over the years: an unbeatable inventory inside—to avoid those hot and muggy South Florida days—along with stellar customer service that includes doubling the factory warranty, access to discount gas prices, free car washes for life anytime and a rewards card that allows customers to earn points and discounts on future purchases. “‘We always give you more for less,’â€? says Case, “and that’s one of our slogans. The other one, ‘Our customers are our friends,’ couldn’t be any more accurate. I love what I do and making people happy. I want to make the car-buying experience fun and easy for them, so everyone here goes out of their way to make sure that’s the case.â€? Rick Case Kia Florida, 14500 W. A PERFECT PARTNERSHIP BY RELYING ON EACH OTHER’S STRENGTHS, ROSE AND DEAN SKLAR SUCCESSFULLY SELL THE WESTON LIFESTYLE. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer Rose and Dean Sklar weren’t always Westonites. In fact, before relocating to Weston in 2001 they were snowbirds, traveling back and forth from New Jersey to West Broward during Dean’s off-season as part of the PGA, where he’s currently elected to the Quarter-Century Club, an elite group of members who’ve been part of the organization for 25 years or more. “Dean was coming down pretty frequently but once the kids were born, it was harder and harder to go with him. And I hated the winters; it was definitely time to move,” says Rose. With a degree in marketing and advertising, along with her high energy, Rose was a success from the start, and it’s continued to get better. “We’re passionate about selling Weston

because it’s our home, too. We raised our kids here—both of whom were able to go to A-rated public schools in the area. But now that our children are grown, we’re intrigued by all the new construction in East Fort Lauderdale, so much so that we’re considering purchasing a small property for weekend fun. We’re season ticket holders at the Broward Center and enjoy exploring the local restaurant scene, so it should be a great fit.” While Rose stops short of calling herself and others in the Weston community empty-nesters—“I prefer asking clients, ‘What’s your right size [home] now?’— she knows she and Dean are the right people to help other Westonites looking to move East. “Just like I helped fellow Northerners relocate South, we’re ready to help Westonites move East. Fort Lauderdale is going to be the next Miami, and we’re incredibly knowledgeable about all the city has to offer.”

“Being in partnership with Coldwell Banker is the best of both worlds for everyone involved, and most importantly, our clients. Coldwell’s marketing and Internet presence is second to none and my clients can rest easy knowing they are associated with the global market leader.”

Honey, Let’s Take the Tuxedo Tonight AND THAT WOULD BE THE 2015 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPÉ NIGHTHAWK EDITION. Text & Photographs by Steve Siler 52

This is not a car. It has four wheels, a steering wheel and four places to sit—or lounge, more appropriately—but to call the 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé Nighthawk Edition a “car” is problematic. First of all, when an automobile contains seven words in its name, the word “car” borders on insult. “Automobile” is more fitting; “chariot” or “carriage” hit even closer to the mark. The word “car” also invites crass comparisons to other mere “cars,” and as we found during our weekend with this rolling

masterpiece, there is little that compares to a Phantom Drophead Coupé. The Rolls-Royce Phantom is already regarded as the most superlative form of transportation available today. It comes in three varieties: saloon (British for “sedan”), Coupé (pronounced “coop-ay,” of course) and “Drophead Coupé” (British for “convertible”). Each is dimensionally palatial, lavish in its accoutrements and, of course, stratospherically expensive. It is rendered in exquisite materials, every one of them authentic, and if it looks like

something—wood, carbon fiber, leather, metal, aluminum—it is not only that very thing, but the best possible version of that thing. You won’t find better hides anywhere in the animal kingdom; you won’t find more exquisitely polished wood, metal or, in this car’s case, carbon fiber slabs in any car. And running one’s bare toes through the deep lamb’s wool carpeting in a Rolls Royce should be on everyone’s bucket list. While each and every Rolls is a masterpiece, the Nighthawk Edition—one of nine being produced exclusively for the US market—is a masterpiece among masterpieces. It is essentially a rolling billboard for the so-called “Bespoke” division of Rolls-Royce, which tailors its cars to its clientele’s most curious specifications. Examples 54

inWESTON MAGAZINE

of bespoke touches on the Nighthawk include its matte black metallic finish on the hood and windshield surround, red leather seat piping and interior accents, and an entire dashboard, including gauge faces and the center-mounted clock, gleaming in carbon fiber. Thus equipped, the Drophead Coupé Nighthawk represents a rather formal, even sinister, expression of this iconic automobile. Alas, as with every Drophead Coupé, the Nighthawk provides a majestic transportative experience. At any speed, the car—ahem, carriage—glides along with the eerie silence of a mausoleum, as if the world around it has been placed on mute. The 453-hp V-12 underhood makes nary a peep, even at full throttle. Top down, wind and tumult are notably absence well into to highway speeds, while top-up, it is as airtight as a vault. Cracks and expansion joints seem suddenly filled by the time the wheels cross them. It is swift, but not fast. It steers obediently, but offers too little feedback through the thin-rimmed steering wheel to carve corners. Indeed, the DHC feels as utterly disengaged from the road as its customers feel to the bourgeoisie. And for that, the Phantom makes no apologies: if its driver wants to feel the road, he or she could take one of the supercars with which the Phantom will assuredly share space in the stable. Put another way, if this customer’s garage is akin to a closet, offering an array of choices to drive, it’s fair to say that the dapper Phantom Drophead Coupé Nighthawk Edition is the tuxedo.

THE ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS CELEBRATES ITS 10TH YEAR WITH AN EXCITING SERIES OF PERFORMANCE AND VISUAL ARTS COMMISSIONS.

56

inWESTON MAGAZINE

It may have taken 30 years to actually go from concept to fruition, but when it finally did open, The Adrienne Arsht Center was greeted with great fanfare and excitement—and for good reason. Now, nine and a half years later, the venue will be celebrating its tenth year with a series of 10 commissions, known as “10@10”. Encompassing both the performing and visual arts, the original pieces, which were announced in late February, will be created by various longtime Arsht Center collaborators and highlight the rich cultural relationships the Center has fostered over the last 10 years and its commitment to commissioning new work. Additionally, an education or community engagement component will be incorporated into each new work to support the Center’s mission of making the performing arts accessible to all. “As Miami has evolved into a destination for arts and culture, so has the Arsht Center as a

The CEO of Liberty Grande, LLC, and CEO/ President of Logictech Construction Group, LLC, Moses Bensusan is developing Melia Costa, a luxury condo-hotel and the first beach resort in South Florida managed by the Melia brand. Designed as a beachfront oasis, it’s part of the burgeoning Hollywood Beach Village located just steps from the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk. Originally based in Quebec, where he spent 25 years in the industry, Bensusan came to South Florida eight years ago and opened Liberty Grande, LLC, a familyowned and operated real estate and development company based in Hallandale Beach. As a complement to his role with Liberty Grande, Bensusan is also co-founder and acting CEO of Logictech Construction Group, LLC, which opened in Hallandale Beach in 2009; the company’s project portfolio includes property extensions for Port Everglades, Florida International University, Broward General Medical Center; as well as River Plaza Garage and Commercial Park and it was named one of the Top 25 construction companies by South Florida Business Journal.

Bensusan’s largest joint venture to date is Costa Hollywood Condo Resort, which is expected to play a leading role in the resurgence of Hollywood’s real estate market thanks to its affordably priced “smart” units, which up until now have more commonly associated with Miami and Miami Beach. “Our project offers the best of everything under the sun with an appealing low-maintenance lifestyle,” says Bensusan. “Costa Hollywood is also helping to propel the resurgence of Hollywood Beach as an international vacation destination.” The environmentally friendly residential-resort development, located at 777 N. Ocean Dr., will house 307 fully furnished, turnkey “smart” units— studios and one- and two-bedroom residences ranging from 390 to 1,500 square feet—with terraces, ocean and Intracoastal views, advanced technology, high-end furnishings, energy-efficient appliances and an automatic valet parking system. A rooftop infinity pool and courtyard and entertainment lounge areas are added attractions. All the units will incorporate Apple’s state-of-the-art home system, with a long menu of interactive features like housekeeping service requests, in-room dining, spa reservations, electronic concierge, inroom TV, and video on demand. “Hollywood Beach has great untapped potential as a world-class oceanfront destination,” Bensusan says. “We enjoy the energy of this remarkable community and look forward to playing a role in transforming the city. We believe the future of Hollywood Beach is now.” For more information, visit costahollywood.com

REGALIA IN SUNNY ISLES BEACH Louis Montello and his Regalia Beach Developers have redefined the Sunny Isles Beach skyline with the 2015 completion of the developer’s flagship project, Regalia, a 46-story contemporary oceanfront jaw-dropper of a project. Montello, who is president of Regalia Beach Developers, has more than 25 years of experience as a transactional attorney and is the principal of Montello Law, a boutique law firm that represents high net worth individuals and entrepreneurs in various industries, including commercial and residential real estate closings; real estate development and construction; mergers and acquisitions; corporate and securities law; finance; and maritime law, including yacht construction matters; and aviation law. So he knows what the well-heeled want, and with Regalia, he gives it to them. Describing this project as “luxury” doesn’t quite cut it (in fact, they call it “ultra-luxury”)—the oceanfront property has 40 units outfitted with top-of-the-line everything, from the security system and multiple private elevators to the fixtures, like copper sinkss and Wolf warming drawers in the kitchens, ens, to 360-degree water views. Then there are the building amenities, which include a media room and theater, billiards room with cigar lounge and wine bar and private beachfront cabanas. That’s just LOUIS MONTELLO scratching the surface. Regalia is located at 19575 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach. For more information, visit regaliamiami.com.

Down Levy TO THE

LATIN HEARTTHROB

WILLIAM LEVY WANTS YOU TO KNOW HE IS MORE THAN JUST A HUNK. There is a moment in the 1989 movie Steel Magnolias when Olympia Dukakis’ character referred to her perfectly chiseled nephew as being so physically perfect he appeared to be “carved out of cream cheese.” That moment comes to mind when gazing at any photo of William Levy—let alone watching him in motion onscreen, washboard abs rippling, hazel eyes gazing seductively, tousled hair begging to be, well, tousled some more. Then again, the Cuban-born actor—who moved to Miami 20 years ago at age 14 with his mother—did work as a model before launching his acting career. So the gorgeous thing is a given (and one of the reasons he was the cover of People en Espanol’s 2012 “Sexiest Man Alive” edition). He’s even been called “the Cuban Brad Pitt,” which, he told Fox News last October, “gets annoying, because I have my own name.”

He does indeed. And there’s more to Levy than the heartthrob status, as he will tell you—if you just take the time to pay attention. “I’m an actor,” he said in the same interview. “I prefer someone saying ‘He’s a good actor.’ I like to interpret a character, not really being seen as the good-looking guy. I don’t like that.” While he may not be able to escape that characterization given his looks, he’s working hard to make his acting the main focus, something he’s been doing just about from the start. After starring in the play La Nena Tiene Tumbao in Puerto Rico 10 years ago, he hit the small screen, debuting on Univision in the Venevision International production of Olvidarte Jamás. He later appeared in Mi Vida Eres Tu and Acorralada. In 2008, he appeared in his first film, Retazos de Vida, and was subsequently asked by television producer Carla Estrada to star in Pasión, marking Levy’s breakthrough in Mexican soap operas. Televisa cast him as the lead in Cuidado con el Angel with actress and ex-RBD singer Maite Perroni. The show, first broadcast in Mexico in June 2008, began airing in the US in September of that year on Univision, averaging 5 million viewers every night. In 2009, Levy starred alongside Jacqueline Bracamontes on Sortilegio on Univision; the finale drew 6.6 million viewers, beating ABC and CBS for viewers in that time slot. Later that year, the actor lent his voice to the Spanish version of the animated movie Planet 51, and from there he toured several Mexican cities with the play Un Amante a la Medida, followed in the summer of 2010 by a tour with the play in the United States. His career took a more mainstream turn in 2012, when Levy appeared in two episodes of the VH1 series Single Ladies with Denise Vasi, and joined the cast on Season 14 of Dancing with the Stars, where he and his pro partner, Cheryl

Lionsgate

Levy has worked his way through Hollywood’s numerous scenes, including appearing alongside Jennifer Lopez in a steamy music Û `i Æ Ì Ã v> ½Ã Õ«V } w ] The Veil; the popular reality competition Dancing with with Stars, and Addicted, a movie based on the erotic novel of the same name.

“I’m an actor, I prefer someone saying ‘He’s a good actor.’ Burke, finished in third place. But it was his recent role as “the other man,” Quinton, in the steamy drama Addicted, months before Fifty Shades became the buzz of the country, based on best-selling author Zane’s erotic novel of the same name, that really made the American public sit up and take notice of Levy as one of Hollywood’s potential leading men. The press surrounding the film, which also featured fellow sex symbols Boris Kodjoe and Tyson Beckford, often veered off the topic of the film itself and onto the subject of the effects it was having on the acting trio’s admirers—both male and female. During a Huffington Post interview with the guys, all three admitted

they were cool with their rampant gay following—semi-nude pics of all three were popping up on hundreds of gay websites. “They’re great,” Levy said at the time. “I love them all. Women. Gays. I have an uncle who is gay, and I saw him going through a lot of stuff back in Cuba when I wasn’t well known. A sad scene. I’m sorry. My English isn’t very good-looking. So I respect them. They’re all really very nice people. Human beings. You got to give it to them.” Despite not wanting to be known for his hunkiness, Levy does heartthrob with expertise. No doubt, the fact that he’s a true Latin lover helps. His first kiss came at age 13 in Cuba. He’s gone on the record

I like to interpret a character, not really being seen as the good-looking guy. I don’t like that.” as saying, “I like women to be coquettish, romantic, affectionate, who engage in a hot exchange of looks;” that he prefers to do it “on the beach, in a lift or in a car,” and “I love making love a lot. I do not know whether I should be considered a good lover. It is up to women who have been with me to say it. So far, I have never been left for being a bad lover.” He’s also romantic—he says flowers “are mandatory” on Valentine’s Day—and named as his ideal woman his son’s mother, actress Elizabeth Gutierrez, with whom he has two children. But Levy’s next three films, all in postproduction at press time, have nothing to do with romance. He’s rounding out his

oeuvre with the Emilio Estefan project, A Change of Heart, a movie centering on the story of a Cuban immigrant that was filmed in areas of Miami, including Aventura, and that costars James Belushi and Virginia Madsen; Term Life, a crime drama, with Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn; and this September’s The Veil, with William Moseley, set in a war-torn land where a warrior betrayed by his troops is taken in by a hidden tribe and recruited to fight. But as busy as he is working, Levy still finds time to hang out in his hometown for fun as well as work. In February, he was the guest of honor at the official launch of

Miami Rum Club’s ad campaign at the RitzCarlton South Beach, and in late January, he heated up the room at the Miss Universe Pageant, where he served as one of the judges alongside Manny Pacquiao, Kristin Cavallari and Lisa Vanderpump at Florida International University. And last October, he was given the keys to the city by Mayor Tomás Regalado. His response showed as much affection for the Magic City as it has for him. “God gave me the opportunity to be here doing what I love and being where I am today,” he said, “in a city that seemed so far away that it was almost like a dream to me. Today our Mayor has given me that recognition. To me, this is unbelievable!” APRIL 2015

A 21ST-CENTURY EDUCATION

TIME FOR MOM

“Since having my kids I’ve learned that family is the most important thing in the world—it’s your foundation. Business isn’t, and that was a hard lesson for me to learn because I love to work. But when the kids get sick or something happens in your family and you can’t show up for something that you thought was so important, you realize your priorities have shifted.”

“Eithan really loves technology and it’s hard to control because he is completely surrounded by it. We have a strict rule prohibiting all electronics during dinner, even for me and my husband. Apart from that, he can only use his electronics during privilege time, which is during the weekend. And there’s no Instagram or Facebook allowed at all, at least until he’s a little older.”

“I’m a Buddhist and I meditate regularly. Five years ago, I met the Dalai Lama and it changed my life. It gives me such mental peace to be at the beach and feel connected to nature. That’s when I relax and balance my chakras. It’s so important to learn how to be at peace with yourself and not pay attention to the noise everywhere.”

Aaron Lurie/myvmastudios.com

“Having kids rid me of the selfishness I previously had. I’m an only child, so before I had them I was always more focused on me because I never needed to take care of anyone else. I am amazed at the things I’m able to do for my kids. Being a mom is the greatest gift.”

“It’s given me so much happiness to watch my children grow day by day and see them develop into young men and women. I was an uncomplicated mom, taking each day as it came, with its good and bad. Perhaps I was able to handle motherhood in this way because I was very young when I became a parent.”

t Botaniko Weston, Terra Group’s brand-new 100-acre residential community, an innovative lifestyle is being created for couples and families. Terra Group developer David Martin, together with architects Chad Oppenheim and Roney Mateu, is celebrating Weston’s tropical environment along the Florida Everglades by designing a gated community of 125 one- and two-story homes that will range in size from 4,200 square feet to 7,200 square feet. Prices start at $1.7 million and head north to more than $3 million. When Botaniko Weston begins delivering these homes by the end of this year and the beginning of 2016, the development should bring back the natural habitat of the Everglades. and pocket parks for bike riding, jogging, dog walking, showcasing art and sculpture, even for practicing yoga. Flowers will enhance the lakes, and the beauty of nature will urge families to venture outside and mingle with their neighbors. When completed, light, water and sky will be as integral to the design as the materials used. Martin selected Weston for this project because it’s a growing city with some of the best schools and parks in South Florida. “As the community continues to evolve and housing expectations are raised, there is an inherent need for new residential development, which the area hasn’t seen in more than a decade,” says Martin, who, with his father, Pedro Martin, founded Miami-based Terra Group in 2001. “With artful landscaping and

The city, which was established in 1996 and developed by Arvida/JBM Realty, offers the full package: natural ecological beauty, diverse international residents, a low crime rate, shopping and dining options, 14 parks and a number of other recreation facilities. In 2012, Money magazine named it one of the best places to live in the US. All of these factors contributed to Martin choosing Weston as the place to create an environmentally pristine community of modern homes. Oppenheim, who has designed many of the most important buildings anywhere—among them 10 Museum Park in Miami and a major green project in Manila, Philippines—is creating modern homes with wood, stone and glass for this project. He is using dramatic arches, but will make them warm and inviting with his indooroutdoor emphasis. “I have been an architect since I was 6 or 7 years old and have always wanted to do a dream home,” e,” says Oppenheim. “To craft a life to a dream am totally fascinates me. Thanks to Jonathan Adler’s sense of style, each guest room at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in Manalapan has come alive. Inspired by the bright blues of Capri, the stark white rooftops of Santorini and the classic nautical Palm Beach vibe, Adler has transformed the hotel’s 309 rooms, infusing them with sophisticated glamour. In an effort to define a new guest room experience in this luxury hotel, which was recently rebranded from a Ritz-Carlton, Adler, who lives in New York and owns a second home in Palm Beach with husband Simon Doonan, wanted to create a youthful vibe of kicky, vibrant elegance. But he also needed to pay homage to the more mature Palm Beach set and their love of tradition and the beauty of the ocean. “Palm Beach design is at once traditional and modern; it’s like lemon sorbet for your mind and soul,” says Adler. “The rooms needed to appeal to oldsters and youngsters alike, so they have a nod to the traditional with a healthy heap of modern.”

Adler didn’t forget about the importance of outdoor living, where luxe balconies overlooking the ocean are framed by draperies and outfitted with whimsical hanging chairs and a dining area— perfect for breakfast al fresco.

Adler, who finds inspiration in mid-century modern art and global pop culture, has eponymous retail stores and wholesale businesses around the world. They carry his ceramic designs, decorative objects, tabletop collections, furniture, lighting, rugs, bedding and bath accessories and even his handbags. His clever 2004 redesign of the Parker hotel in Palm Springs, CA (the former Givenchy Resort), was later the subject of a reality show on Bravo TV. For Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, he re-envisioned 98

For example, the white entry with silver bamboo detail draws the eye into the guest room, which shines in ocean-inspired blues and teals with the occasional pop of yellow reflecting the Florida sunshine. Outdoor living is brought inside via the cabana-esque balconies framed by draperies and outfitted with whimsical hanging chairs and

a dining area. This vignette overlooks the water, yet connects to the room. Everything Adler included in the rooms, from carpet to furniture to artwork, conveys a sense of place. “The colors are fresh and vibrant,” he says. “The blue is the blue of the sea. The yellow is the yellow of the sun. The white is the white of the puffy clouds in the afternoon.” Overall, his furnishings and accessories are designed to celebrate the spirit of Palm Beach with a modern spin on the old preppy vibe. Bold chrome and nickel finishes and accessories mix with space-style light fixtures that resemble the Sputnik satellite. There are also Lucite consoles, mid-century-inspired velvet sofas and chairs and bamboo wallpaper. The only wooden element in the guest rooms and suites is the media unit on the wall opposite the bed, which is done in a pickled oak to resemble driftwood. Adler’s desks stand out with tassels, which he humorously calls “the earrings of the home.” The Butterfield sleeper sofa, Preston cocktail table, Nixon slipper chair and dining table, Maxime dining chair, mini

Sputnik chandelier, Talitha console and Bel Air lucite scoop vase are all Adler’s designs. “The furniture is low and great for lounging without blocking the view of the beach,” the designer points out. “The table is perfect for work, breakfast, or cocktails with friends. And the bold carpet grounds the room.” For the walls, Adler combined his talent for design with his society infatuation. Classic work of the late society photographer Slim Aarons is featured in all of the rooms as an ode to the glory of Palm Beach. Artist Donald “Drawbertson” Robertson created a Palm Beach portrait with a scene of multigenerational families and guests of all types, which highlights the diversity in and around the hotel. Jenna Snyder-Phillips painted a large-scale oceancentric watercolor of a sea horse. And Leila Jeffries did the parakeet print in the bathrooms. Adler’s vibrant design taste encourages hotel guests to escape the daily doldrums. “I hate when I open the door to my hotel room and feel like I could be anywhere,” says Adler. “Palm Beach is singular and dreamy, and I

wanted to honor that spirit and sense of place. When you enter your room here, there’s nowhere else you could possibly be.” Adler also recreated the hallways and room corridors of the hotel. All doors are in teal; the carpet is bold and dark, and portions of the ceiling are teal with anemone lights reflecting off of them. Hallways are moody and dark so when guests enter their rooms they are happily surprised to be bathed in the light, airy and sunny space. There are also white light fixtures and nickel accents. A 102

white Preston console table with embossed leather finish and chinoiserie details is an ode to society-favorite designers like David Hicks. Adler’s mix of fantasy, luxury, whimsy and glamour works perfectly in this seaside resort. The redesign exhibits the carefree yet sophisticated lifestyle of Palm Beach and all of south Florida. As he puts it, “The colors are crisp and clean; all of the textures are squishy and luxurious, and the whole look says jet-set glamour with a nod to the nautical.”

MAX’S SOCIAL HOUSE

If you’ve been around the South Florida restaurant scene long enough, you’ve heard of restaurateur Dennis Max, the man behind the magic of Mizner Park’s long-running Max’s Grille. Max has recently added another notch to his culinary belt with Max’s Social House, affectionately referred to as SoHo, where terms like “local,â€? “seasonalâ€? and “sustainableâ€? are more than just buzzwords. Start with the Warm Stilton Dip with house-made potato chips or Chorizo Stuffed Dates wrapped in housesmoked bacon, then move on to more unique offerings including a Bahn Mi Kobe-style hot dog or Cauliower “Steakâ€? with lemon oil and herbed breadcrumbs. Make sure to take a peek at the cocktail list as well, where you’ll ďŹ nd more than two dozen tasty temptations. Don’t miss the Fig and Walnut Old Fashioned, which includes dried ďŹ g- and toasted almond-infused bourbon and Hemingway’s Hallucination, a combination of light and dark rums, passion fruit purĂŠe, Luxardo Cherry Liqueur and a few drops of absinthe.

Angelo Elia has become a household name ever since opening his famous Fort Lauderdale namesake institution, Casa d’Angelo. If you need another excuse to go, all four locations— Fort Lauderdale, Delray Beach, Coral Springs and Weston—recently launched a weekly ladies night every Thursday from 4 pm to 10 pm, where you and the girls can enjoy 2-for-1 drink specials and half off the specialty tapas menu, which offers yummy options like Caprese salad and turkey and chicken meatballs.
