If left untreated, VI can lead to circulatory problems or difficult-to-heal skin ulcers. Local Flavors Eat and drink your fill of them at the third annual Weston Food and Wine Festival.

It’s that time of year again: The Weston Food and Wine Festival is back on February 18. Come out and taste a variety of wines and liquors along with dishes from more than 30 local restaurants; while you sip and sample, take in live music from bands that will be playing all day on one stage while mixology demos take place on a second stage. And P.S.: this is a family-friendly outing, with a kids’ zone for the little ones to enjoy. Proceeds from the event go to benefit H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday), which helps people in the community who are having trouble making ends meet due to job loss, disability health crises or other such unexpected circumstances. The Food and Wine Festival takes place 2 p.m.-6 p.m. at the Weston Town Center; tickets range from $20-$40 and can be purchased online at westontowncenterfoodandwine.com. The Dallas Brass

SWEET NEWS

CREAM’s third South Florida location is now open in Pembroke Pines.

Ice cream is just about everybody’s favorite sweet, so it’s no surprise locals were mobbing the premises as the celebrated ice cream sandwich franchise CREAM opened the doors to its brand-new Pembroke Pines location in December. The sweet shop quickly gained major momentum when it landed on the scene in South Florida two years ago, drawing crowds who clamored for their ice cream sandwiches made with warm, freshly baked cookies, brownies, waffles and do’sants. CREAM Pembroke Pines is the third of its kind to open in Florida, with all three locations owned and operated by the Martinez family and partners. The idea to bring the booming West Coast ice cream business to South Florida initially began as a DECA high school project for then-sophomore Armando Martinez Jr. With the help of his mother and father, Corina and Armando Sr., and younger brother, Tomas, as well as their partners the dream of opening a CREAM franchise became a reality when they opened their first CREAM store in Aventura in 2016 and a second location in Weston the following year. CREAM Pembroke Pines is located at 306 SW 145th Ave., Suite 118, Pembroke Pines; visit creamnation.com.

Check In & Check It Out The cool new CIRC Hotel in Hollywood ups the hip factor for both locals and out-oftowners.

South Beach is definitely one of our favorite staycation spots, but its cool vibe is fast spreading northward. Proof: CIRC Hotel, the new, 111-room modern boutique hotel on Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood. Inspired by the area’s burgeoning arts scene, the contemporary hotel houses the Italian eatery Olivia by well-known South Florida restaurateur Piero Filpi (Carpaccio at Bal Harbour Shops, Mezzanotte) and Marcello Sindoni (Il Toscano); Muse, a chic rooftop bar and lounge on the 12th floor pool deck; Presto Market & Coffee Bar; a state-of-the-art fitness center; and 3,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. And then there is the location: it’s smack in the heart of Downtown Hollywood, within walking distance of restaurants, bars, cafés and boutiques, and directly across from The

PARTNERS IN ART The Diplomat Beach Resort and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale join forces to celebrate a 60-year milestone.

Off the heels of a recent $100 million makeover and in honor of its 60th anniversary, the Diplomat Beach Resort has forged a partnership with NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Like the Diplomat, the Museum was founded in 1958 and is the hub of the South Florida Art Coast. To kick off the partnership, The Diplomat is offering the “Art of Travel” package July 8, 2018; it includes two complimentary tickets to “Frank Stella: Experiment and Change,” a major exhibition spanning legendary artist Frank Stella’s 60-year career from the late 1950s to the present that comprises approximately 300 paintings, relief sculptures and drawings. Upcoming at the Museum from February 4 to October 18, 2018 is the exhibition “Midnight in Paris

ArtsPark at Young Circle, which hosts weekly food and arts events and has a Visual Arts Pavilion that offers glass blowing, jewelry making and painting classes. In fact, the CIRC recently launched an arts contest, encouraging South Florida artists to submit pieces that will be displayed in the hotel’s lobby and meeting space and available for sale to the public (artists will receive all proceeds from the sale). “CIRC Hotel was designed to reflect Downtown Hollywood’s unique, culture-centric personality,” says CIRC GM Kara Lundgren. “It will be the ultimate haven for business professionals, vacationers and social groups to indulge, relax and unwind.” Located at 1780 Polk St. between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, minutes from Hollywood Beach and the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk; visit circhotel.com.

and New York: Scenes from the Fin-de Siecle,” which explores a fascinating and influential period through paintings, prints, drawings, architectural designs, and the decorative arts. “As Hollywood begins to boom, so does the art and culture scene, and we wanted to offer that component to our guests,” says The Diplomat Beach Resort GM Ed Walls. “We plan to hold several special events on site with the Museum, host intimate dinners at our signature restaurants, and offer our guests enticing art-related hotel packages.” Room rates begin at $249 and are based on availability at time of booking; visit diplomatresort.com.

By Alison Ryan

FertileFebruary HOW TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF EXPANDING YOUR FAMILY.

Valentine’s Day celebrates romance, and, well, romance often leads to baby-making. But for many couples, getting pregnant can be difficult and stressful. Farrar Duro, reproductive acupuncturist and owner of Florida Complete Wellness in Davie, wrote The Smart Couples Guide to Getting Pregnant, An Integrated Approach in 2015—and recently re-published it in order to offer couples the latest research on what really works. “The book is compiled from 15 years of working with infertility, both naturally and in assisting couples undergoing IVF,” says Duro. See her top tips for increasing your fertility below. KNOW YOUR BODY EARLY ON. If you’ve had a history of irregular or painful cycles, don’t mask or ignore the symptoms with medications such as birth control pills or OTC pain relievers. Instead, try to chart your cycles to find out what your hormones are really up to for a few months. GO FOR A HORMONE CHECKUP. This should include your reproductive hormones, along with measuring your thyroid, vitamin D3 levels and stress hormones. We use a combination of blood and saliva sampling for the most accurate picture of which hormones are truly circulating in the body at different times throughout the day.

FIND A REPRODUCTIVE ACUPUNCTURIST. Traditional Chinese medicine has been used to treat infertility for over 2,500 years. By lowering stress hormones and aiding in

circulation to the pelvis, acupuncture can help improve egg quality. Research shows that techniques such as electroacupuncture, which involves a small microcurrent machine attached to the

acupuncture needle, can even help improve pregnancy rates. 4745 Volunteer Rd., Suite 304, Davie, 954.765.6505; floridacompletewellness.com

About the Pout

Here’s an easy new way to keep it soft and sexy.

Want a plumper pout in time for all those Valentine’s Day kisses, but don’t want to spend the cash on lip fillers? Check out the PMD Kiss Lip Plumping System ($139), a device that uses pulsating vacuum technology and a serum to create the appearance of a fuller lip. After putting on the serum, apply the device in sections along your lips, as the pulses work to pump up your lips. You’ll see instant results, but with daily use, you can expect it to boost collagen (to reduce those pesky lip lines and wrinkles) and create long-lasting results. Pucker up! pmdbeauty.com

Lady ın Red HOW TO DRINK ALL THE WINE YOU WANT AND STILL LIGHT UP THE ROOM WITH YOUR SMILE.

You probably can’t wait to sip plenty of red wine at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival this February, but all that burgundy vino can leave behind unwanted stains on your teeth. Dr. April Patterson, owner of Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique and Spa in Fort Lauderdale, has some tricks to make sure your pearly whites stay that way. “Throughout the day or evening that you’re drinking red wine, eat textured foods like apples, cheese or celery, which will naturally clean your teeth,” advises Patterson. “Another trick is to chew Trident gum with xylitol. It creates saliva in your mouth, which helps clean your teeth. Or you can take a cue from celebrities who are rinsing with coconut oil to protect your teeth.” The dentist also suggests using an electric toothbrush to get a thorough cleaning—her favorite is the Philips Sonicare FlexCare, which connects to an app via your bluetooth and lets you know if you’re brushing correctly. Time marches on—but not across your face, thanks to Glow Drops.

Gee Beauty never fails us when it comes to looking good, and now the South Florida beauty boutique is offering exclusive local access to internationally renowned skincare specialist Dr. Barbara Sturm’s newest product, Glow Drops ($145). And they’re simple to use: just dispense a few drops in your hand and pat on your face for an instant glow. While the brightening product contains hyaluronic acid, nutrient-rich oils and light-reflecting pigments, the magic ingredient is Purslane, which is supposed to stimulate the skin’s own antioxidant system to combat harmful free radicals, while activating telomerase, the “fountain of youth” enzyme proven to slow the aging process. Guerdy Russell

ABRAIRA

MIRAMAR

She’s an event guru known for creating weddings for high-profile clientele such as Miami Heat player Chris Bosh. He’s a fire captain who hails from a long line of first responders.

You’ve known each other since high school. How do you keep the spark alive? We’re never bored, as we always have a hot topic to debate and that brings a zesty element to our relationship. We’re constantly surprising each other—recently, for his 40th birthday, I surprised him with a Cuban-themed bash at Nautilus South Beach that I spent months designing. Since I travel a lot for work and Russell works 24-hour cycles, we like to FaceTime or text sweet messages throughout the day to keep each other excited about our next face-to-face. How have your multicultural backgrounds shaped your family? I was born in Haiti and raised in Paris until the age of 9, at which time I moved to the U.S. with my family, while Russell is a native Miamian of Cuban, Italian, Spanish and Scottish descent. Our varied cultures have created a household for our two children where a melting pot of traditions thrive. Our backgrounds have allowed our children to be more accepting of and open to others. What do you like to do as a couple for fun in Broward? We love to eat at restaurants like Brimstone Woodfire Grill, and when we feel like being adventurous, we’ll go to places like iFLY, which provides indoor sky-diving experiences. We are big nesters and love to do home renovation together, which we find very rewarding and fun.

Samantha Steven

BALANOVICH COOPER CITY

She’s a rock-star photographer. He’s a national account manager in healthcare who has never let Multiple Sclerosis slow him down.

Although you’d never know it from looking at him, Steven has MS. How do you face each day as a couple? Steven: We’re grateful that I still have great mobility, and being active is important to us, so we exercise together five days a week at CrossFit Ripped in Weston. We also support many charities that are important to us on a personal level, from running in marathons to benefit the MS Society to Samantha donating her services to local schools and charities to capture amazing photos of children.

Describe the biggest lesson that you’ve learned as a couple. Samantha: Life is full of highs and lows, and you must ride both together. When Steven was diagnosed with MS, I was pregnant with our first child. Together we went through a very traumatic period, but we remained strong for one another. There is no perfect marriage; you just have to communicate and work through things. What does romance look like in your relationship? A nice dinner out, without our two children, where there aren’t any spills or fights at the table. We’re creatures of habit, so we often go to our local favorite places like Village Tavern, but we also enjoy going to Komodo in Miami or the new Rooftop in Fort Lauderdale. Each year, we take one vacation alone, just the two of us, so we can keep that spark alive.

Paula DaSILVA Carissa OFFHAUS COCONUT CREEK

DaSilva is the queen of the cuisine at Burlock Coast in Fort Lauderdale, while Offhaus lives the sweet life as a pastry cook at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

How does your love of food bring you together? And who cooks at home? Paula: We both share a passion for food, and because it consumes a big part of our professional lives, if we ever get stumped on what to do, it’s usually, “Let’s try a new restaurant!” When both of us are home, we share cooking responsibilities; one chops while the other starts to cook, and we both love to grill. Carissa is the grill master. You have two children, ages 6 and 10. How do you balance kids, demanding jobs and your relationship? Paula: It’s a juggling act. At times we divide and conquer, but we prefer to do things as a team. I’m a huge planner, so each week we discuss what everyone has going on from our work to the kids’ school activities. Somewhere in between all the craziness we always find time for ourselves, even if it’s just having morning coffee or getting pedicures together.

What does free time look like in your relationship? Weeknights we try to stay home as much as we can, cook with the kids and make sure that we’re involved with their school work and activities. We also love to travel. Any extra days that we have, we pack our bags and go somewhere. One of our favorite date places is always somewhere we can sit outside and overlook the water.

Vicki Richard DELUCA WESTON

She’s a model with a big heart for animals. He’s a financial advisor to pro athletes with a past life as a sports agent in the NFL. You’ve been married 20 years. What’s your secret? Vicki: Being married isn’t easy, it works because we put in the work. We make time to talk and to make sure that we’re really “hearing” each other. The world is so stressful right now, and if we don’t touch base with each other every day, we’re lost. Richard also has a crazy sense of humor and always keeps me laughing.

With three teenage girls, how do you handle the parenting? It’s a game of good-cop, bad-cop. Richard is the nice one who is sweet to our “little girls” and I’m the bad one who enforces all the rules. The results are three amazing young ladies that are very strong-willed and confident. What’s a typical date night in Weston? We appreciate good food and we enjoy eating at Ceviche Arigato for dinner, or sometimes we go to Acquolina or Angelo’s for appetizers and drinks. Richard has been a wonderful support of my animal rescue organization, BulliesNBeyond, and he helps at adoption events, which makes me happy that we can do that together. We also love taking our three rescue dogs for a walk.

Rachel George PERZ SUNRISE

She’s the general manager at BRIO Tuscan Grille, Plantation. He’s an adventurous sales manager at Morris 4x4 Center.

Tell us your love story. We met when I took my Jeep in for service and George was at the service counter. I had a book with me—Wicked by Gregory Maguire—and George asked me about it, totally catching me off guard and piquing my interest. I learned that George has a passion for Jeeps, which was made even more apparent when we went offroading together for the first time. I was incredibly impressed with his knowledge and skill.

You’re both heavily involved in the community. Why is philanthropy important to your relationship? We chose to establish our home in Broward County because there is so much culture and diversity here. We both learned from our parents the importance of contributing to our community, and the time we spend together volunteering for MADD and ARC Broward helps reinforce those values and reminds us of our families. What’s your favorite way to spend time together? We enjoy experiencing new things and new places, whether it’s trying a restaurant we haven’t been to, going to a show or a lecture (usually at the Broward Center), or a new activity. We recently attempted archery! Usually, one of us introduces the idea to the other, but we make sure to give every new activity 100 percent.

Triple Threat FORT LAUDERDALE ATTORNEY JESSE BERNHEIM FOCUSES ON PERSONAL INJURY LAW, HOMEOWNER INSURANCE DISPUTES, AND PHARMACEUTICAL/MEDICAL DEVICE LITIGATION. By John Buchanan

J

esse Bernheim is a highly experienced attorney who focuses on personal injury cases, homeowners insurance claims, and pharmaceutical/medical device litigation. Born and raised in New Jersey, he attended the University of Massachusetts and received a degree in business administration with a focus in finance. Following graduation, he moved to Miami and attended the University of Miami School of Law, where he graduated cum laude in 2001. Bernheim Dolinsky Kelley is located at 1936 South Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954.894.5900 or visit duejustice.com.

Q&A with Jesse N. Bernheim, founding partner at Bernheim Dolinsky Kelley

What types of homeowner insurance cases do you handle? “A large focus of our firm is representing homeowners against their insurance companies for any type of water damage, tile damage, fire, and hurricane or other storm damage. We walk clients

through the claims process. In the past few years, homeowner insurance carriers have become very difficult to deal with. Our experience helps level the playing field and maximize the recovery so that the homeowner can make the necessary repairs to their homes.” What is your track record in pharmaceutical/medical device cases? “I have represented thousands of clients in litigation against pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers. Some of the things I have represented clients for are defective prosthetic hips, and dangerous drugs with inadequate warnings, such as Actos, Xarelto, and Pradaxa. I’ve also represented hundreds of women and men due to, respectively, transvaginal and hernia mesh failures.”

PHOTO: RICARDO MEJIA

What sets you apart from other personal injury attorneys? “There are a lot of personal injury lawyers in South Florida to choose from. But you don’t see my firm on TV or billboards, because we offer a boutique, personalized experience that has resulted in great success for our clients. I have represented victims of car, motorcycle and boating accidents; slip-and-fall incidents, and other kinds of injuries for 16 years. So I have built a large referral network by word of mouth, due to our track record. That’s what brings us most of our new clients.”

Experience Counts FOR MORE THAN A QUARTER-CENTURY, WESTON ATTORNEY LEE GLASSMAN HAS BUILT A FORMIDABLE REPUTATION AS A PASSIONATE ADVOCATE FOR HIS CLIENTS. By John Buchanan

L

ee Glassman, whose focus includes real estate law and insurance disputes, has been practicing law for 26 years. Born in Miami, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.A. in political science. He earned his law degree in 1991 from Emory University. He is peer-rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell and was named as the top real estate boutique law firm in Florida in 2017 by the Legal Elite Awards. The Glassman Legal Group is located at 2200 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 105, Weston. For more information, call 954.915.8800 or visit glassmanlegalgroup.com.

Q&A with Lee D. Glassman, founder and principal of The Glassman Legal Group

What kinds of legal issues come up between home buyers and sellers? “There are so many issues, especially since the real estate crash 10 years

ago. Those issues involve necessary repairs, or homes with liens or code violations that have never properly been resolved. And issues with liens or code violations also affect title to the property. Then there are the disputes between buyers and sellers before a closing. Today, in almost every closing we do, there is some kind of issue that needs to be dealt with.” What kinds of insurance-related cases do you focus on? “We handle insurance litigation, meaning that we sue insurance companies who do not pay claims, or who don’t pay enough. Those cases include homeowner, car, health and life insurance companies. Nine times out of ten, those cases settle before they get to court.”

PHOTO: RICARDO MEJIA

What do you primarily focus on? “We are real estate attorneys and we do everything in that field. We represent people who are buying and selling homes or buying investment properties. We represent banks in commercial transactions. We represent people involved in foreclosures. We also handle family matters, like when someone inherits a property and they want to sell it, but there are certain orders that must be obtained through the courts in the estate process.”

Leveling the Playing Field FORT LAUDERDALE ATTORNEY MICHAEL J. COHEN HELPS BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUAL CLIENTS USE THE LEGAL SYSTEM TO WIN JUSTICE IN PERSONAL INJURY AND INSURANCE DISPUTE CASES. By John Buchanan

M

ichael J. Cohen is a veteran attorney with more than two decades of experience. He focuses on litigation related to personal injuries, disputes with insurance companies, and medical malpractice. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1998. After serving as a managing member of two prior firms, he founded the Weston-based Cohen Legal Group in 2012. Cohen Legal Group is located at 2883 Executive Park Drive, Suite 200, Weston. For more information, call 954.617.6500 or visit accidentalinjurycounsel.com.

Q&A with Michael J. Cohen, founder and principal of Cohen Legal Group

What kinds of personal injury cases do you handle? “With regard to personal injury cases, I represent people injured in auto accidents, commercial accidents, slip-and-fall incidents, and medical malpractice cases. We’re able, as a result of our expertise and experience, to help clients get compensated for their losses when they’re injured

because of the fault or wrongdoing of others. And we also take those cases on a contingency basis, meaning that the client owes us nothing if we do not win the case.” What kinds of insurance disputes do you handle? “I represent clients who have any kind of dispute with an insurance company. I represent medical providers who are not paid by insurance companies. I also represent homeowners who have disputes with their insurance companies as a result of property damage issues. Unfortunately, claims against insurance companies are very common. The fact is, they make their profits by collecting premiums and then delaying or denying claims. We help level that playing field.”

PHOTO: RICARDO MEJIA

What types of litigation do you focus on? “As far as litigation is concerned, I help small businesses and individuals with any sort of legal dispute involving monetary issues. I help them use the legal system to resolve those issues successfully, either through negotiation or trial. I offer a free consultation with prospective new clients. I’ve litigated cases ranging from their early stages all the way through to trial.”

Did you know that varicose veins might be an indication of a serious medical condition called venous insufficiency or VI? Beyond unsightly bulging veins, other symptoms of VI include numbness, tingling, or heaviness in the legs and feet. Left untreated, VI can ultimately develop into other conditions including difficult-to-heal leg ulcers. Unfortunately, most people don’t know that they have VI, nor do they know how to address it—until now. • Venous insufficiency cannot be treated cosmetically, as the problem is more than skin-deep. It is a medical condition covered by insurance that typically requires the repair of a faulty valve within a vein. Dr. Ariel Soffer is a world-renowned vascular expert who, over the past fifteen years, has trained hundreds of physicians and treated over 10,000 patients. Basic, But Not

Expect the unexpected at CHARCOAL Garden Bar + Grill.

F

ifteen years ago, a global real estate developer swept his arm about the vast darkness and desolation of a then-menacing Wynwood landscape and said, “Invest any money you have here.” I nodded dutifully, but thought, “I wouldn’t want to be here alone at night, much less buy empty lots in No Man’s Land.” The rest, as they say, is history. Writers don’t generally invest, but entrepreneurs and visionaries do; thus, Wynwood is now a hip destination, home to galleries (including the Rubell Family Collection in a repurposed warehouse), Wynwood Walls street art, brew pubs and experimental concepts. A pebbled swath of empty land became Wynwood Yard, the al fresco go-to gathering place with bar, curated food trucks (including one by a Michelin-star chef) and live music, and attached to it, a restaurant that is more than meets the eye. CHARCOAL Garden Bar + Grill’s owner, Ken Lyon (of Fratelli Lyon and Lyon Frères fame), broke through roadblocks and barriers to create one of the country’s first full-service restaurants built entirely out of modified shipping containers in a space that allows no permanent structures. And lest you think you’re dining in grubby port surroundings, this spot is well designed, welcoming and what one could accurately describe as industrial chic. Step past lush foliage into a magical space with hanging lights, a brightly lit bar, an open dining room, Spanish tile, and a glass-enclosed “conservatory” for indoor dining. It’s a relaxed, come-as-you-are spot with-

Josper-roasted young root vegetables from local farmers with olive oil, Maldon salt and cracked pepper. RIGHT: Charcuterie and cheese board with American farmstead cheeses and artisanally cured meats.

out pretense that attracts visitors and a cross-section of the local population every night (and Sundays for a delectable brunch. Try the Spanish Inquisition, or if you have a sweet tooth, the Belgium “Liege” waffles). No one would ever guess that this restaurant could conceivably be broken down and removed in a matter of days. In fact, the massive containers are so subtle, they blend into the background and are overtaken by the ambience, lively open kitchen and uplifting surroundings. If you’re looking for a “happy” place to dine, this is it, and it’s full of surprises. Order a martini and it arrives in an etched crystal coupe glass, the kind you’d see Cary Grant gesturing with in a vintage film. It’s an unexpected elegant detail, of which CHARCOAL prides itself with what it calls an “analog” approach to its menu. It’s an unusual term, but it means “back to basics,” according to Lyon, and it starts and ends with charcoal cooking over enclosed Spanish Josper grills that were initially born in Barcelona, Spain, to combat wind coming off the coast. The entire menu at CHARCOAL comes from two Jospers housed in an 8x20' container kitchen that’s run by an equally small army of chefs whose scarred arms are a testament to the massive power and 700-degree heat emanating from charcoal grills. There are no fryers or sauté pans here; every delectable dish, including the not-to-miss desserts of bread pudding and Bananas Josper (a take on the classic Bananas Foster), is created in these grills.

“It’s not digital, not high-tech,” says Lyon. “There’s something primeval about cooking over charcoal versus a modern digital kitchen,” he says. Primeval and flavorful. Main menu highlights include octopus, which is slow-simmered until tender, sliced and Josper-roasted, then tossed with sorrel, oregano, thyme, lemon and olive oil. Branzino, served in a style Lyon observed in Barcelona, is cooked whole and then divided into steaks. Then there’s Choucroute Garni, roasted pork belly, praised pork shoulder, grilled Proper Sausage, beer-braised house-cured sauerkraut, tiny potatoes and grainy Dijon mustard. New to the menu is a farm-raised Hudson Valley duck breast, which is sliced and served medium rare, “as it would be done in France,” says Lyon. Chicken, pork and beef are all sourced in Central Florida, breads come from Lyon pals Zak the Baker and Sullivan Street Bakery, charcoal-grilled vegetables and must-have macaroni and cheese are all served “en casserole” in piping hot, cast-iron skillets, and nearly every dish is garnished with herbs from CHARCOAL’S garden. With 30 tub-like containers, Lyon lays claim to the largest edible organic garden in the country. The menu, says Lyon “has an American sensibility with a Spanish, French and Italian style. We’re letting the food speak for itself with simple cooking, good ingredients and great flavors.” And of course, charcoal. CHARCOAL Garden Bar + Grill is located at 82 NW 29th Street, Miami, and is open for dinner from 5 p.m. every night but Monday. Sunday Brunch is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit charcoalmiami.com or call 786.646.2998.

or more than a century, luxury carmakers got on well enough selling their goods to the well-heeled, slicing their respective sausages in one, two, and sometimes three sizes, and maybe tossing in a sexy sports car model to add some shimmer to its shine. Then this millennium happened, and the aristocracy developed a thirst for SUVs, too, sending every luxury automaker from Lexus to Lamborghini scrambling to quench it. Among the latest entrées comes from Maserati, the 104-year-old Italian performance car brand positioned between Alfa Romeo and Ferrari within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ global brand hierarchy. Maserati’s curvy new Levante SUV was crafted from the proverbial rib of its mid-sized Ghibli sedan and shares much of the Ghibli’s mechanical bits, while both models are offered in new GranLusso and GranSport trim levels. Similar but not the same, the freshened-for-2018 Ghibli and Levante both make Maserati’s performance and luxury attainable starting around $75K, thus opening two proverbial doors to the Maserati brand.

2018 MASERATI LEVANTE (BASE PRICE RANGE: $75,300—$92,000)

The Levante is to Maserati what the Cayenne was to Porsche back in 2003: a first-time effort to reproduce a storied brand’s sporting mojo in mid-size SUV form. But unlike Porsche’s awkward-looking first-generation Cayenne, which proved that the Porsche 911’s iconic styling elements might not, in fact, work so well in tall SUV proportions, the Levante SUV looks damn fine in Maserati’s Italian couture.

108

Indeed, while the Levante’s furrowed brow, hexagonal grille, curvalicious contours, and distinct side window shapes were curated over many years on lowslung Maserati sedans, they look equally natural on its taller body. Like every Maserati, the Levante has a disproportionately large lower body compared to its upper body, contributing to its decidedly athletic look that’s made even sportier with the GranSport’s red brake calipers, rear spoiler, black wheels and darkened trim. Lest anyone liken it to your neighbor’s Grand Cherokee, the Levante’s exquisite door handles, exhaust pipes, fender portholes and glistening Trident logos assert its eminence. Details matter, especially in chrome.

Maserati Levante

• Nice new infotainment system • Conspicuously cheap interior bits

Like the Cayenne, the Levante takes performance seriously, though it doesn’t cohere as masterfully as with the Porsche. The standard 345-horsepower turbocharged V-6 is plenty powerful, and the Levante S’s Ferrari-built (!) V-6 corrals 424 ponies under the Levante’s long hood, yet even the S occasionally exhibits annoying turbo lag. It brakes with authority and steers with acuity, and the air suspension’s firmest setting lets it corner confidently up to about 9/10 of its limits. Beyond that, it becomes a nose-heavy handful. Certainly, few Levantes will be driven that hard by their owners, and around town, the Levante does everything a lux-u-vee ought to sans complaint, making delightful sounds all the while. Still, if you’re a true Maseratisto, you might expect that plus Porsche-baiting performance, especially from a Levante S GranSport with every performance option—and a $104K sticker. At least the clean, businesslike cabin brought the spoils, including buttery black leather, red stitching, terrific GranSport-exclusive sport seats, sparklingly clear Bowers & Wilkins speakers and more, without resorting to frippery. The GranLusso has an even higher luxe quotient, trading the racier look for warmer décor, especially with its available Ermenegildo —Zegna silk upholstery. Like the Ghibli, however, every Levante uses Chryslersourced switches, stalks, and buttons—which is like finding Velveeta in your billionaire friend’s kitchen. The cheap stuff is more discreetly integrated in the Levante than the Ghibli—the Velveeta’s still there, only it’s stashed in the refrigerator versus left on the counter—and hence, takes little away from its uniquely Italian-feeling driving experience.

With its four doors, trunk and ground-hugging suspension, the Ghibli may technically be a sedan, but ever since the junior Maserati first appeared in 2014 looking for all the pasta in Italy like a Quattroporte left in the dryer too long, I’ve proffered that the Ghibli is effectively a coupe. Its evocative and curvaceous body, with its frameless windows and low roof, are all in line with sporty, high-end coupe design. And its back seat is rather snug by sedan standards, but it’s darn generous among coupes. A new-for-2018 grille design doesn’t make it look any more coupe-like, but it does add some sex appeal, a coupe specialty if ever there was one. Looking back a few years, the last time Maserati offered a Ghibli was 1973, and it was—you guessed it— a coupe. As a Maserati, the Ghibli must perform well, and indeed, performance is the Ghibli’s best quality. The Ghibli’s turbocharged V-6 engines produce 350 and 430 horsepower in base and “S” models, respectively, a few ponies greater than in commensurate Levantes. Being both lower and lighter, the Ghibli puts on a more satisfying hustle whilst making the same great sounds, even in nonS form, as was my test car. Also like the Levante, the Ghibli is offered in base form, or one can upgrade to the more decadent GranLusso or zestier GranSport models. All feature Maserati’s excellent new touchscreen infotainment system with dual knurled concentric control dials. My GranLusso tester featured open-pore wood and

acres of dizzyingly aromatic leather. Unfortunately, the 2018 updates didn’t effectively remedy the Ghibli’s most glaring and longstanding source of criticism: inconsistent material quality, with some pieces epitomizing Italian craftsmanship and other bits unworthy of a Fisher Price toy. Even worse, some of the most egregious cheapness is found in very conspicuous places—the awful defroster vents in the front corner of the driver and passenger side windows come to mind—and it’s the sort of stuff that borders on appalling in the higher trim levels. Whether or not that is tolerable may hinge upon on how emotional one gets about sexy styling, performance, and character, all of which the Ghibli—and every Maserati I’ve ever driven— delivers in spades.
