the winds of change Some routines in life are good: exercise, good hygiene, eating well—you get the idea. But other times, routines can become ruts after a while, and that’s when it becomes time to mix it up. Times are changing more quickly than ever, and we all have to adapt lest we fall into a rut—or worse, get left behind. We aren’t into ruts around here, so six months in, here is your redesigned copy of inWeston. We could have waited until the new year—you know: new year, new look—but we figured the sooner the better and all that. We’re hoping once you’ve had a chance to peruse the issue you’ll be as enthusiastic about it as we are, but either way, as always, feedback is certainly welcome. One of the most obvious examples of visual fabulousness in this issue is our cover guy, Enrique Iglesias—one of South Florida’s favorite sons, of that there is no doubt. As if you’re not already walking around with his current hit, “Bailando,” running through your head at all times, now you can get the inside scoop on how and why he’s teamed up with that other Florida favorite, Pitbull, for their upcoming concert tour (they’re performing right here at the Hard Rock in October). And then there is the Miami United Soccer Team, who, as part of our “Around the World on Every Block” feature, we gathered together for a group photo and asked each import for his take on his experience since moving here. And of course we’ve got the usual news you look forward to each issue on shopping, dining and events not to be missed. We’ll see you next in the Fall. Until then, enjoy the issue.

A FuLL Service ApproAch Lorei Body toning studio heLps cLients find Beauty from the inside out. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

2

At a glance, Lorei may seem like your typical spa. But looking over the list of treatments, it’s evident that here transformation occurs from the inside out. Sure, there are still plenty of massages, facials and body treatments to choose from, but there are also ultra cavitation and radio frequency therapies, which aid in body contouring and cellulite removal, and semi-private fitness classes, which max out at three people, that combine SBT [suspended body training] with Power plate sessions. “Many celebrities and NBA players use Power plate because it’s so efficient,” says Rei. “In just 20 minutes, you can get the same results as an hour spin class because of the vibrations. Plus it improves skin elasticity, circulation and bone density.” While Lorei always stresses the holistic approach, they recently welcomed Dr. Laura Sudarsky, a board-certified plastic surgeon who has taken on the role of medical director. In South Florida, a little nip and tuck is almost de rigueur. “Many of our clients were looking for something more than what we offered, and with the addition of Dr. Sudarsky, we can fulfill all their needs in one place.”

LUCIANA REI After working for years in the medical field, Luciana Rei was ready for a change. “I realized health should come from the inside out, so I switched my specialty from ophthalmology to the health and wellness business,” she says. “Not only does it let me spend more time with my family, but I am exactly where I want to be doing exactly what I want to do. I love helping people learn how to feel their best.” So what’s next for the Argentine transplant that has carved a new path for herself in South Florida? “We’re working on expanding Lorei to other locations in Florida and around the country. So many of our clients travel frequently and are always asking for more locations. They just can’t bear to be away for too long.” 24

“We approach each client on an individual basis. We find out what they want and create a program to match that by giving them the tools they need to feel better about themselves.”

JODI COHEN

tHe CongRegation oF temple Dor Dorim celebrates in the sukkah, which was built for sukkot, the Harvest Holiday.

By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Temple Dor Dorim began nearly two decades ago as a small community school and has since become a community touchpoint offering religious services and schooling for both kids and adults, parenting resources, organized social groups and events, enrichment classes like self-defense, sports, yoga or cooking, a summer camp, community service opportunities, and now, an infant program called the Nest. “With high demand from the community and parents of current students, we’ll begin the program in August,” Cohen says. “It’s especially wonderful for parents who want their children to be with us the whole way through. The Nest provides a seamless transition from infancy through Pre-K.” Parents can rest assured that their children are getting a stellar values-based education at Temple Dor Dorim. In fact, the school was accredited as soon as it was able to apply, following its first full year in business. “The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is an incredibly rigorous program,” admits Cohen, “but there is no other choice. They know what’s best; they are the leader in early childhood education and research, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.” temple Dor Dorim is located at 2360 glades Circle, Weston, 954.389.1232; dordorim.org. 26

tHe CongRegation gathers for tu’Bshevat seder, to give thanks for nature and its surrounding beauty.

As director of the Early Childhood Center at Temple Dor Dorim, Jodi Cohen has been part of the team for 18 years. During that time, she has seen the early childhood education program—which focuses on tots 12 months old to pre-Kindergarten age— from a small storefront location to the impressive campus and religious and cultural life center it is today. Her background in elementary education and psychology, as well as stints with Nova University and Broward County (where she was responsible for writing countywide curriculum), she’s a perfect fit. “I was here before the building was,” she laughs. “I had such a unique opportunity to start this school from a clean slate, developing the budget, and most importantly, the curriculum, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Ain’t thAt A KicK in the heAd Broward HealtH’s Baseline pre-testing for student atHletes aims to offset concussion repercussions. Concussions are a big topic in pro sports, but more and more they’re becoming a part of the conversation about school-age athletes. And while a standard sports physical is required by nearly all school and youth sports leagues, that doesn’t let doctors know everything they need to about a student’s cognitive abilities should he or she sustain a concussion. A baseline concussion test can do just that; combined with a complete medical history and physical, it can help keep your student athlete safer and healthier. Broward Urgent Health Care offers the recommended tests for kids aged 10-18—a Sports Physical & EKG as well as Baseline Concussion Testing— at their three urgent care centers, and during the months of July and August, they’re offering the tests free of charge. For more information, visit browardhealth.org.

Q:1 How would parents of children who play sports become aware or know about this baseline testing as a possibility for their children before school starts? We are advertising locally and have a grassroots campaign through the youth sports leagues. We will also be advertising online, and through social media.

Q:2

Q:3

Is the testing recommended for all student athletes who play sports on a yearly basis, including baseball players, swimmers, and those who don’t face as high of a risk of head injury as football players?

Is it recommended for all student athletes even if they have never been in a situation where they may have had a minor concussion?

Yes, it is recommended for all athletes, including recreational athletes. You are at risk riding a bike, falling off a trampoline—it doesn’t have to be a high-impact sport to sustain a concussion. Concussions happen in all sports: cheerleading competition, wrestling, karate, etc. While the schools are providing testing for the majority of high school student athletes, kids that play in community or sports leagues are missed.

Yes, definitely. The purpose of a baseline test is to determine an individual’s “normal” state of the brain prior to a concussion. This provides valuable information for comparison after a concussion occurs to help determine if an athlete is ready to return to play.

Stop Shouldering the Burden repair tHat rotator cuff and get out of pain and Back into tHe swing. Shoulder pain is not uncommon to those who play sports regularly, whether it’s at the top, front, back or side of the joint. According to Dr. Fernando Moya, orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon at South Florida Institute for Sports Medicine, it’s usually a traumatic episode that triggered the shoulder pain to start, such as throwing a football, a collision, or serving or hitting a tennis ball. Left unaddressed, this type of shoulder pain usually worsens with time and can reach the point in some patients where it prevents them from sleeping through the night. 28 inweston magazine

Icing and anti-inflammatories can help to a point, but, Dr. Moya says, “Arthroscopic surgery is indicated on the patients that are unresponsive to conservative management protocol and have an MRI scan with findings consistent with a rotator cuff tear.” Rehab following the surgery is divided into a healing phase followed by a regainmotion phase and a strengthening phase under the supervision of a trained licensed physical therapist. Most patients can return to unrestricted sports activities in about three to six months. For more information, call 954.430.9901 for a consultation or visit drtonymoya.com.

Elle Décor recommends casting a glow with gleaming metal furniture and accessories. HGTV advises we accessorize with metallics. And Better Homes & Gardens counsels more specifically, “For so long, silver and its cohorts have been the first place metal in home décor. But yellow metals are inching back into the spotlight. Embrace the trend with gold accents that have a little softer finish, rather than metals with a full-on shine.” Of course, you can—and should—do what you please. little tHings Mean a lot this is esPecially true at teacuPs, where tiny creatures get big love.

Healing Broken Hearts Peer grouPs and furry friends helP grieving children find joy. Few things in life are more difficult for a child than losing a parent. Abby Mosher, founder and executive director of Tomorrow’s Rainbow, witnessed this tragedy firsthand when she lost her husband. “After my husband died, I was struggling to make the best decisions possible for my son and me,” she says. “I really couldn’t believe that in a community our size the options for children were few.” But the real ah-ha moment came when adults would share their stories with Mosher of how devastated they felt as a child when their parent died. “Hearing their stories of the lifelong effect of suffering such a tragic loss at a young age gave me even more determination to ensure that my own son had a more resilient, successful outcome,” she says. As the only stand-alone grief center in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, Tomorrow’s Rainbow offers onsite and offsite programs—in addition to bi-weekly support groups, a family grief camp is offered twice a year—that impact more than 1,000 children on an annual basis, completely free of charge. Much of the programming is carried out through a dedicated group of volunteers and grief counselors, which include 11 horses—nine miniature and two full-size—two miniature donkeys, three sheep, two goats and a pig. That’s right, the staff at Tomorrow’s Rainbow regularly infuse the therapeutic use of horses and other animals into their program. To learn more or volunteer at Tomorrow’s Rainbow, visit tomorrowsrainbow.org.

As business partners, Eleonora Bonfini and Donna Piro have built an empire based upon their love of all things four-legged. Launched in 1999, TeaCups specializes exclusively in t-cup (under 5 lbs. at adult weight) and toy breed dogs. But it’s more than just a business to its owners. Bonfini is so devoted to the health and safety of her charges that potential owners have to pass an extensive screening process to ensure they can provide the best possible care for such a fragile pooch. The on-site boutique portion offers everything imaginable to indulge your pet, ranging from a $5 training treat to a $4,000, one-ofa-kind gown and custom beds, and their grooming facility, Pet Are People Too. Bonus: In addition to purchasing a pup at TeaCups, you can also adopt a dog through Glimmer of Life, their non-profit, no-kill rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of neglected, abused, sick and injured animals whose devastating health conditions would have caused them to be euthanized anywhere else. Q&A

sure, every kid loves chocolate, but Jarett Levan, president of BBX Capital (formerly Bankatlantic Bancorp), found a way to parlay his love of sweets into a legitimate—and successful—business.

You started off in banking, but ended up in chocolate. How did that happen? “When we sold the bank in July of 2012 and formed BBX, we began acquiring more middle-market companies. our portfolio includes various real estate developments, Renin Corp., the Canadian door and hardware company, and of course, Hoffman’s Chocolate and Williams & Bennett [another chocolate company], along with a few other great businesses.” How did you get the courage to pursue your dreams and make such a drastic career change? “We’ve always invested in great brands. What we’re doing now is really no different than before; it’s just on a smaller scale. also, you’ve got to have a passion for the product, and in my case, that’s easy.” Why chocolate? “Chocolate is a fun business, and it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love to give or receive chocolate. Plus, even as a kid i loved chocolate; i mean i really loved it. When i would travel with my family, we would visit chocolate stores in every city, and i continued that after graduating from college when i visited chocolate factories around the world. i still make a habit of it.” What’s next for Hoffman’s? “We have plans to open a Broward location before the end of this year.” Visit Hoffman’s at 5250 town Center Circle, ste. 135, Boca Raton, 561.750.0021; hoffmans.com.

Sex and Love and Pitbull,Too As Enrique Iglesias prepares to embark on a North American tour, his musical magic has already hit the top of the charts. By Linda Marx EnriquE iglEsias is onE cool hombre. BEcausE despite being a megasuccessful, gifted singer and songwriter adored by millions of music fans around the world, the sexy, Madrid-born Miami Beach resident enjoys nothing more than the simple pleasures of home. When he has time off from touring Europe, south africa, australia, asia and all of the americas, and recording, writing, and promoting his music, iglesias likes to chill on the beach or cruise in his boat. The son of romantic crooner Julio iglesias describes himself as a low-key, uncomplicated guy. “i take pleasure in the simple things in life,” says iglesias, 39. “i enjoy spending time with my friends, going out to eat and having a good conversation, with a glass of wine and a good laugh.” The grammy, latin grammy and multiple Billboard Music award winner has sold more than 100 million albums around the world, with 24 number-one “Hot latin” hits. But he’s so much bigger than his original latin niche. in less than two decades, iglesias has also had 13 number-one tracks on the Billboard Dance charts and multiple hits atop the Hot 100. With the launch of his most recent album, Sex and Love (republic records), he has already topped the charts with five consecutive singles, including the retro, danceable confessional “i’m a Freak,” which finds him

onstage with his tour partner and fellow Miamian Pitbull. The track is a popular follow-up to the pair’s 2012 collaboration, “i like it,” from iglesias’ previous multiplatinum album, euphoria. on september 12, the Miami superstars will begin their much touted “Enrique iglesias & Pitbull Tour” (#EnriquePitbullTour) at the Prudential center in newark, nJ. This up-close and immersive north american extravaganza will be a 15-city aEg live tour with latin urban star J. Balvin as the supporting act. The show, which also travels to Montreal and Toronto, will reach its sexy denouement right here in Florida at Hollywood’s Hard rock live on saturday, october 25. What inspired iglesias to work with Pitbull is their mutual love of music. While it might seem like they come from different musical backgrounds, the pair have discovered a synergy. after they started talking, iglesias learned that they have many of the same tastes. “He is a little bit of a music encyclopedia,” iglesias says. “He loves all kinds of music, and we have the same tendency to sit down in the studio and listen to a song and try to figure out where the inspiration came from.’” and both find collaboration to be a pleasure. “it didn’t feel forced at all,” says iglesias. “and that is why we’ve kept on working together, because he is easy to work july/August 2014

with—extremely talented, so energetic and very downto-earth.” Pitbull enjoys working with Iglesias because he believes the pop singer is a talented musical star and a friend who has taught him a great deal. “Together,” he says, “we are going to give fans great music, energy and what they really deserve—to enjoy life and forget the rest for three hours.” The upcoming tour is also exciting to Iglesias because his passion in general is to hop a plane and play to audiences. He loves being on the road, because touring gives him the best opportunity to show off his skills in the moment. His Sex and Love album pretty well sums up why audiences become maniacal when they watch him perform: It makes them think of sex and love, and can swiftly escape anything else that gets in the way. “I personally feel that life is all about sex and love,” explains Iglesias of his popularity on stage. “Not only for women, but I am flattered how they bring their boyfriends or husbands and even their kids [to concerts]. My fans are diverse, and that is a blessing for me. But they all need sex and love. And while I am on stage, it’s all about having fun. I think that we have a magical connection.” The pop star also has magical connections off of the stage. His gorgeous mother, Isabel Preysler, a well known Manila-born, Madrid socialite, TV host and journalist, is his best friend. Although they live in different countries, he sees her frequently and has all of his life. “We get together in America, or when I play close to Spain,” he says. “I love to have her around me.” His other magical connection is with longtime partner Anna Kournikova, the beautiful Russian-born retired tennis star. They began dating in 2001 when she appeared in the music video for his song “Escape.” He quickly fell in love, bewitched by her beauty and cool demeanor. Now, 13 years later, they’re still solid. Iglesias has called Kournikova the “coolest girl in the world.” He likes to take her to the movies, then to a Miami restaurant for hamburgers and fries, or out for a spin on his boat. "My favorite date with Anna is on the boat in the open ocean under the stars," he says. With the exception of frustrating work-related separations, the longterm relationship works well without marriage for this pair of cosmopolitan stars. “I am not against marriage,” Iglesias says. ”But thank God, I am part of a generation that has a different point of view. I believe that a paper is not going to give me happiness. The only guarantee you have in a relationship is mutual trust.” Down the road, Kournikova wants kids, but Iglesias—who, like her, is a child of divorce— knows it is a major undertaking, and he’s not yet prepared to tackle the issues that go along with child-rearing. “I am happy at this point in my life,” says the performer. “I feel having children is a big responsibility. You have to be prepared 44

inWeston Magazine

for a child.” And since his days are filled with work followed by the necessary recuperation time from such a busy international career, the timing for a family is not ideal. Currently, a normal day in Miami Beach finds Iglesias happily ensconced at home. “I like to be on my favorite sofa watching TV, reading, looking at the ocean or in my room making music, out on the boat/playing aquatic sports, and later, having dinner with a group of friends,” says Iglesias, who prepped at the private Gulliver school before enrolling in University of Miami to study business for a year before tackling music full-time. He also likes to bowl and play pool, or just chill at the beach. He deals with lingering jet lag by drinking a lot of water, working out and sleeping whenever he can find the time.

I personally feel that life is all about sex and love. And despite the ongoing stresses to his body, touring remains his bliss. (This past spring, he performed in Chile, Argentina and Mexico.) He can’t get enough interacting with fans: it never gets boring or dull. There is always a new experience with the opportunity to meet amazing people in every city he visits. “I love meeting my fans around the world and being able to share these experiences with them,” he says, adding, “The only thing about touring I dislike is having to do photo shoots. It's just not my thing.” But it’s a necessary evil of being an international superstar, and so he acquiesces, especially when it’s in support of a charity (in particular, those that benefit children in need). Still, when work is done he likes to hide. A favorite spot is his private paradise in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Here, the desert collides with the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, offering a picture-perfect escape. “I’m a Miami boy,” he insists, “but when I want to relax, I like going to Cabo. It is my favorite holiday destination because there I've found the most breathtaking sunset on earth.” And no doubt, a world of inspiration.

Weston’s foreign flavor attracts a diverse population of family-oriented residents. By Linda Marx

With its unusual marriage of cultural and ethnic diversity, Weston has become an international place to live. No wonder Money magazine named Weston as one of its top choices for the best city to live in America. It may be a small town, but it offers everything diversified families care about most: multiple job opportunities, fine schools, low crime, good health care, and not least of all, interesting people. One of the best-selling planned communities in the country, its nearly 70,000 residents have come from around the globe to put down roots here. According to the 2010 U.S. Census report, 44.9 percent of the population is of Hispanic or Latino descent, and 51.5 percent of households speak a language other than English. Of the large Hispanic population, a greater percentage of the people come from South America (27.9 percent) with others from Central America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. And a whopping 42.9 percent of Weston’s Hispanic residents own their own businesses. Other nationalities significantly represented in Weston’s population are Asians, Europeans, and those from Pacific island nations. With such a melting pot of international personalities, a thriving economy and a soundly designed infrastructure, it’s no wonder everybody wants to be here.

Bonaventure’s east Course is one of the main attractions in Weston.

Time To Fly Whether you’re heading out to visit your native country or on a vacation abroad, you needn’t be at the mercy of Miami International Airport. Now Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is more international than ever.

steve Belleme, business development manager for the Broward County Aviation Department at Fort lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, gets excited when he talks about all the good stuff happening where he works. After ages of domination when it comes to traveling in and out of the country, Miami International Airport—while still offering flights to more international destinations than Fll-Hollywood, at least for now—

A HAPPY HOMECOMING Paula DaSilva returnS to ocean 3030 aS itS executive chef nearly 15 yearS after her firSt Stint. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer It’s no surprise that Paula DaSilva ended up in chef whites. As a child, she spent her days at her family’s Brazilian restaurants, both here and in Massachusetts, so it was a natural transition into culinary school and then the restaurant world. She joined the team for the first time at 3030 Ocean at Fort Lauderdale’s Marriott Harbor Beach Hotel at the tender age of 20, fresh out of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale; since then, she’s become a driving force on the culinary scene, helming 1500 at the Eden Roc in Miami Beach to rave reviews. The restaurant closed last summer, but, DaSilva says, “It has been incredible returning to 3030 and slowly making it my own. It’s definitely been full circle.”

Q:1

What’s your go-to meal after a late night at the restaurant?

“Can I say nothing? I really avoid eating late at night; that’s how you get into trouble as a chef. So at some point in the day, I try to sit down for a full meal. A big lunch will usually carry me through the night, plus I’m tasting all through dinner service, so I don’t end up that hungry when I get home.”

Q:3

Q:5

Meat or fish?

“Fish, and not just because of 3030!”

Q:2

Favorite ingredient to work with?

“Lately I’ve been using a lot of grains, like freshly ground cornmeal grits and farro. But now that summer’s here, I’m leaning more toward lighter items, with lots of summer fruit. Carambola is a great one down here.”

Q:4

Favorite guilty pleasure food?

Favorite way to spend your day off?

ROCCO’S TACOS What better way to kick off your #sundayfunday than with Mexican Mimosas and tableside guacamole? That’s right, the guacamole of your dreams is also being served at brunch—served Saturdays, too—and if we’ve learned anything from our recent Rocco’s Tacos trips, it’s this: Always order the guacamole. An array of Mexican-inspired breakfast eats have joined the fiesta and they are not to be missed, either. If your sweet tooth is calling, you can that route as well, with Pan Dulce y Compota Manzana, a Mexican-style French toast with bacon, agave, apple compote, maple syrup and a sweet sour cream. 1313 EAst lAs OlAs Blvd., FOrt lAudErdAlE, 954.524.9550; rOccOstAcOs.cOm.
