ANNUAL SHARING NIGHT EVENT

OPEN HOUSE | CONCHITA ESPINOSA ACADEMY

Divine Savior Academy celebrated their annual Sharing Night event on Saturday evening, November 4. Many local restaurants and vendors sponsored this time for parents and teachers to socialize in a relaxed, upscale atmosphere. Over 300 guests sipped wine as they tasted various delicacies offered from new and established local eateries. With child care provided onsite, parents could relax and chat with each other and their children’s teachers. Many generous businesses donated valuable raffle prizes such as spa packages, gift cards, and hotel stays. “This is important for our sense of community,” remarked Tim Biesterfeld, Head of Schools. “Even with our hectic schedules, it is necessary to take time to spend with each other, getting to know one another. We are very grateful to our Parent Teacher Organization for doing such a great job putting this event together each year. Even though our school continues to grow, we are a family and want to keep it that way.”

Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA) is a private, coeducational K-8 school first established in Havana, Cuba, in 1933. CEA began with a dream and a piano. Conchita Espinosa believed that every child deserves and has the right to a complete education in the arts and sciences. She dreamed of a school where students would develop passion and character and have the opportunity to enjoy the precious years of childhood. Conchita reopened her school in Miami, Florida in September 1963. Since then, CEA has earned an outstanding reputation for giving its students an excellent academic education, the opportunity to become involved in the arts as part of their day-to-day lives, a sense of worth, and strong human values. CEA’s educational programs are thoughtfully designed to meet the specific needs of each developmental stage from K3 through 8th grade. Through a solid and integrated academic and arts curriculum, students develop leadership skills, compassion, service, self-awareness, and pride in themselves and their community. Conchita Espinosa Academy will showcase the school for prospective parents on Saturday, January 20, 2018. For more information or to schedule a personal tour, contact Audrey Gonzalez (agonzalez@conchitaespinosa.com) or call 305-227-1149.

Chyno Miranda performs a surprise concert at CityPlace Doral.

GET INTO THE SPIRITS Celebrate the season with a couple of wintry cocktails from Craftsman in Mary Brickell Village. Whether the temperatures outside feel like it or not, it is just about winter in Miami— and that deserves a toast. But not with just any cocktail—something that’s seasonally festive. One of Miami’s newest additions, Craftsman, located in Mary Brickell Village, has just what we’re looking for—and they shared their recipes with us. Cheers! PUMPKIN PATCH 1 oz. Tequila Reposado 1 oz. FOS Greek liqueur 1 oz. pumpkin purée 1/2 oz. lemon juice Barspoon of maple syrup Shake all ingredients well; strain into martini glass and garnish with a toasted cinnamon stick.

surprise CITYPLACE Chyno Miranda promoted his newly launched solo career—and latest single— at Miami’s hottest new lifestyle destination.

Venezuelan superstar Chyno Miranda surprised fans with a free pop-up performance at CityPlace Doral last month to promote his latest single, “Hasta El Ombligo,” featuring Zion and Lennox. Because of its large Venezuelan community, Doral was the perfect location for Chyno to perform live, and he drew a massive crowd with just an hour’s notice. The singer, who as part of the duo Chino & Nacho gained fame around the world and earned a Latin Grammy in 2010, entertained the audience with his signature tropical urban beat, leading with hit singles and finishing the half-hour concert with his newest material. Chyno selected CityPlace Doral as the venue because of its energetic outdoor-indoor vibe—and it turned out he made the right choice.

BRIGHT APPLE 1 1/2 oz. FOS Greek liqueur 1 oz. apple cider 1/2 oz. lemon Barspoon of honey Dash of allspice Shake all ingredients well. Strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with apple slices and cinnamon.

Dr. Julia Harper at work addressing her audience.

Justice FOR Superwoman How to get it? Neuroplasticity expert Dr. Julia Harper shows us the W.A.Y.—which, incidentally, stands for “What About You.”

26

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

We can’t control the universe—even though many of us try very hard, on a daily basis, to do just that—but we can change our behavior. Just ask Dr. Julia Harper, a Davie-based expert in neuroplasticity, or the rewiring of our brain to break old, reactive and negative behaviors, patterns and habits. She doesn’t just talk the talk, though; on the contrary, she recognized that she, too, was in need of a solution to the Perfectionism Syndrome—aka Superwoman Syndrome—that would leave her feeling miserable at the end of any given day whether she had met her to-do goals for that day or not. So she developed a way to “walk myself out of it,” as she says. That’s how the W.A.Y. method was born. Best of all, Dr. Harper can actually help the rest of us learn how to do it, too, and take back our lives—along with our mental well being. To hear Dr. Harper speak in person, check out “Blame It On Your Brain! Change Your Behavior Through Neuroplasticity,” on Wed., January 17, 2018, from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. at The Sacred Space, Miami; visit juliaharperinc.com.

The “Superwoman Syndrome” moniker is one that rings a bell with so many women today who feel the pressure to make everything in their lives work perfectly, not just for themselves but for everyone around them. It can breed resentment and anger, though, because of the unjust burden it creates. What’s it all about? I can only talk to you about Superwoman Syndrome because I’ve got it myself. I discovered it because at the end of my “super” days, I was still miserable. The idea we have is that if we check everything off our list today, this day is going to be better, this day is going to be different. And somehow, you get to the end of that day, and you’ve got some things done or even all of them, but you ask yourself, “Why is it I still feel not-so-super?” I noticed myself not feeling the exhilaration of accomplishment, when I would sit down and realize my to-do list fell somewhat short of perfect. And then we tend to think, well, if I can’t be 100 percent, I’ll go for 98 percent—still aim for the “A.” And then we still come up short.

So how do those of us caught up in that cycle retrain ourselves, or “rewire” our brains, as you put it—especially after operating this way so long? I like to quote Julie Andrews and say, “Begin at the beginning.” Everything starts with the “don’t want”, and every time you are faced with a “don’t want” your brain is wired

to react. “I don’t want to miss a deadline. I don’t want the kids to still be awake at 9:01 p.m.” These show up all day long in your life. You think it is your choice to be angry, nasty or bitchy when you miss that deadline or the kids are still up at 9:01, and you try to talk yourself out of it, but the part of the brain that drives your reaction doesn’t care what you want. You have to realize you do not get to control whether or not it’s coming, but you can control how you’re going to handle it when it does come. The shift for the Superwoman is to move where you put your control. Take all your smarts and put it where you have control, which is in yourself. The W.A.Y. method is all about getting out of the cycle. I know this well because I used the method to see myself and walk myself out of it. It’s practical, and you can use it over and over, using simple steps. I wanted to bring it to real women with real lives, with businesses to run and children to raise. The bottom line is you can’t change what you can’t see.

Sophisticated Sustainable AND

Oak Park in Davie offers home buyers a new vision of fine living with a mix of elegance and an emphasis on preserving the environment.

By Linda Marx

With 55 beautiful oak trees shading the 22-acre parcel project that Julian Consuegra and his partners at Magna Developers bought in late 2013, the concept of Oak Park was designed to respect the environment and the wonderments of nature. The Davie-based residential housing development is a 22-home community with 50 percent of the lots already sold, according to Magna CM sales and marketing manager Maria Botero. In the next six months, she expects the remaining 11 lots to be snapped up as well. The first residence at Oak Park is slated for completion in December-January, with the entire project expected to be sold out by the end of 2018. Buyers from all over the world as well as South Florida—and especially Doral—also like the central location near significant roads and arteries and good schools and colleges with easy access to Broward County parks and recreational offerings. In fact, Oak Park offers four acres of green parks with trails and lots of gazebos for leisure time activity and perfect seclusion. The development is also popular because the homes are large, and the prices are some of the best in the area, ranging from about $1.8 million to $2.3 million. The one- and two-story homes have open designs on 20,000—27,000-square-foot lots and interiors are inspired by Adriana Hoyos of Adriana Hoyos Furnishings, an international firm specializing in high-end interiors and furniture design. “Oak Park’s design concept goes beyond a paradise gated community,” says Stephanie Farache, Design and Construction Coordinator for the project. “When entering the houses, all the senses will be tickled in every way. The great glass windows allow natural light to flow into the three different house models filling each room with warmth and comfort.” With more than 30 years of international experience and 15 years in South Florida, Magna Developers look at Oak Park as one of their most prized and unusual projects. Finding the right balance between contemporary design and preserving nature in a development that offers a great location, security, and a perfect sense of community is what people want. “The developer is serious,” says Botero. “When people buy at Oak Park they become part of our family. We truly care about our customer.”

Stephanie Farache is the Design and Construction Coordinator for Oak Park.

Looking to begin the New Year with good health, but want to skip the typical doctor’s office experience? the biostation, a full-service medical, anti-aging and wellness practice in Delray Beach, will open its second location in Miami in December. Founded and run by Dr. Martin Bloom, a cardiologist and functional medicine expert, it’s a place where you can stop in for an energizing B12 shot and a shot of Botox—or, on a more serious note, opt for a comprehensive blood panel and let them dig deeper into your health problems. “At the biostation, we’re changing the way traditional medicine is practiced,” says Dr. Bloom, who has designed a total wellness package that provides patients more one-on-one time and more testing than most traditional doctors usually offer. “From the hour-long appointment with our doctors to our in-depth lab testing and full spectrum of services, the biostation offers all one’s wellness needs under one roof.” Each patient also has their own dedicated Patient Advocate, who becomes their guide through the entire process, and best part: they take most insurance. “We look to identify the root cause of any issues to restore the body

Mauricio Comitre DORAL

PREVIOUS LIFE: Owner, retail motorcycle stores CURRENT PROFESSION: Owner and CEO of

Miami Yachts Group

HIS STORY:

After 15 years in the motorcycle market, managing three stores between Miami and Orlando, running a specialized mechanics’ shop, and organizing a motorcycle racing team for five years, I was feeling overwhelmed and unsatisfied with the results. In 2015, I was invited by a friend to visit the Miami Boat Show and was introduced to the owners of one of the largest boat manufacturers in Brazil, who were interested in entering the American market. From that moment on, I began to study and understand the American market in order to help them. During my research, I realized Florida was strongly positioning itself as the largest boating market in the U.S. That was the turning point for me and I quickly decided I wanted to take part in this growth. The project became a reality and we started importing boats to South Florida. But that was not enough for me. I wanted to manufacture my own brand, so I started traveling and participating in various boat shows all over the world. I also started looking for potential manufacturers that could inspire me to fill a market void back home. Once I found the right designs, it was time for me to launch Miami Yachts Group. This year, I realized my dream by debuting my first two luxury boat models during the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. It was a great challenge. At the age of 50, I had decided to make a big change in my life and take a risk.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

The most rewarding part is being able to work hard and play harder. The lifestyle that the business attracts is what I was looking for at this stage of my life. Once the boats are finished and turned over to the client, I’m able to see them enjoying the outdoors and creating special memories with their family and friends. I also find it exciting to network with like-minded boaters, manufacturers and suppliers. I needed a change and it’s definitely been worth it.

K-Sos of The Hoy Polloy

MIAMI SHORES PREVIOUS LIFE: Possibly Karen Carpenter CURRENT PROFESSION: Frontman for The Hoy Polloy & community talk show host for the Early Late Night Show

HIS STORY:

Getting your heart broken has some real rewarding effects sometimes. Although I have been doing music almost my entire life, it wasn’t until I got my crushed by this girl in college that I looked at myself in the mirror and said, “Stop wasting your time with the inconsequential. Pick something and go for it. The whole world is at your fingertips.” Well, there was only one obvious answer: music. Barely anyone saw me for the next three months; I was locked away in my room crafting the album that would set in motion what was to become my life.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

It’s hard to distinguish between the emotions sometimes—it’s scary, it’s exhilarating, you just finished a show in Portland only to drive through the night 15 hours to play in Vegas the next day, maybe for 50 people if you’re lucky. Most people think that doesn’t make any sense, but they don’t see the bigger picture. One of my favorite Miami artists, Renda Writer, always says, “Your comfort zone will kill you,” and he could not be more correct. You have to always be pushing yourself into the uncomfortable, and that has as many rewards as it does consequences. The most important thing is not to compare your success to others; everyone is on their own journey, and if you don’t give up, your time will come. The rewards can be as simple as a video message from a friend who lets you know your music is psyching them up for a long day at work on their commute. It’s some random guy or gal you talk to in an elevator, give a free CD to, and then he or she posts about how much he enjoyed it all over social media (both true stories). It’s the piano or guitar riff one of your bandmates presents you and the lyrics pour out of you like a waterfall and you write lyrics to an entire song on the way home from work (voice memo is recommended in this scenario). Surely no one is a musician for plush rewards, because any true musician knows to be a great musician you are working hard every moment of every day while trying to maintain some sense of balance in your personal life. Never stop learning. Reinvent yourself. Be a Bowie, and leave them as confused as possible as often as you can.

Brett Benza MIAMI

PREVIOUS LIFE: Professional baseball player

(Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals); Wall Street executive CURRENT PROFESSION: Founder of EazyO App

HIS STORY:

As a veteran in finance, I spent many years entertaining clients, family and friends on South Florida’s most coveted beaches, and by the pools of the area’s high-end hotels. After too much time spent trying to flag down servers to get a menu, put in a drink order, or even pay for the services, I realized that resort and hotel staff are faced with a large geographical location, making it difficult to properly serve guests. Recognizing that the antiquated service model needed to be upgraded, I knew we had to disrupt the system. The idea of EazyO, a mobile app that allows customers to order beach and poolside food, drinks and sundries from participating hotels and public beaches from the convenience of their smartphones, was born. I guess, in the back of my mind, I had always wanted to be more entrepreneurial and my own boss.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

I was very encouraged that within the first few months we started working with some of the largest venues in South Florida, like [the] Fontainebleau, Boca Raton Resort and Club, Naples Grande and many others. We knew at that point it was going to help guests have a better ordering experience at these venues and be a very scalable business. Guests are able to order as often and as quickly as they want right from their smartphones. Over 90 percent of people that download the Eazy O app use it and 54 percent are repeat users. Hotels are now able to run drink specials, happy hours and reimagine their beach and pool service, and we are raising revenue 20-30 percent at some of these venues because their order velocity is increasing and they can control their headcount. The Eazy O app is delivering the menu, taking the order and payment. Now the staff can spend more time with guests. We are doing a very common thing in an uncommon way which is both relatable and inspiring for them.

FORT LAUDERDALE

HIS STORY:

The moment my life and career changed was when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North World Trade Center the morning of September 11, 2001. I had left active duty from the Navy in late 2000 to pursue the dream airline pilot career of working one day a month and flying to exotic locations around the world. As I took my brand-new American Airlines uniform out of the plastic, my wife came into the bedroom with a horrified look on her face and told me that I needed to take a look at the TV. The first thing I noticed was that the weather in New York was beautiful and the impact hole in the World Trade Center’s north tower was too large for a small plane. As I stood there in stunned silence, going through my mental aviation checklist of how such a thing could have happened, I saw an airliner streak in from the right side of the screen and explode in a massive ball of fire and debris into the side of the second tower. My heart jumped. I knew we were under attack. I ran into the bedroom, reached past my brand-new American Airlines uniform, and grasped the familiar feel of my well-worn green Navy flight suit. I zipped it up as fast as I could, pulled on my flight boots, and ran out the door, nearly tripping on laces I hadn’t tied. I broke the land speed record getting out to Naval Air Station Fort Worth, and got through the gate just as they locked it down and went to THREATCON 5—the highest combat posture. I went from flying an airliner that day for the first time to possibly shooting one down. A couple of days after the attacks, we were sitting alert and I scrambled and forced down an aircraft that was flying near Presidential airspace around Crawford, TX. When I was hired by American Airlines, I received a nice letter on colored stationery, signed personally by the Chief Pilot. On October 1, 2001,

42

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

I received a photocopied letter from American Airlines HR that started with: “Dear Crewmember”. Since I was one of the newest hires at American Airlines, I was immediately furloughed, along with thousands of other pilots. Furloughed is airline-speak for “laid off”. I lost everything—my job, my healthcare, my retirement. We had just bought our first house—we had lived in military housing for 10 years—and we had used up what little money we saved in the Navy for a down payment. But I still had my family and I needed to provide for them. I was going to take control of my future. I wasn’t going to let myself become complacent again. And never again would I put all my eggs in one basket.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

I directed all of my energy into something that, until this point, I never thought of as a full-time career: my stock and options trading. I started trading stocks and options as a young fighter pilot and immediately recognized something interesting. The same discipline and risk management methodologies that allowed me to successfully fly and fight the Hornet over the skies of Iraq could be applied to my trading as well. It worked. Extremely well. Eventually I popped up on the radar of a leading Wall Street equity options volatility arbitrage trading firm. I was brought on as the Managing Director of Strategy. We grew from 99 people and $150M to over $2.5B and 600 people in 3 years. A couple years later I became the founder and CEO of the Options News Network. We provided a behind-thescenes look at the options market to average retail traders and investors, the “CNBC for Options”. It would be an understatement to say that I felt like Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) in Trading Places. I have a saying: “Trading is combat.” There’s a winner and there’s a loser and at Top Gun Options I train my members to win.

PREVIOUS LIFE: Mostly a Mom, but also a law school

graduate/entertainment industry account executive CURRENT PROFESSION: Real estate broker and interior decorating company owner

HER STORY:

My “aha” moment came by way of the economic recession in 2009, my last year in law school. I was specializing in family law. As suddenly as the recession hit, I was diagnosed with autoimmune disease and started to battle ailing health. My doctors told me that I would probably never have children of my own. I was devastated—working with abused children in Florida’s poorest county during the day and battling my own health issues was taking a toll on my life. I decided to relocate to Miami after graduating from law school. I joined an entertainment company and began handling client accounts as an account executive, which allowed me to work from home. I finally had my first baby girl; two years later, I was able to have another baby girl, but my marriage was falling apart. My parents decided to relocate to Miami from Orlando in order to help me with my children. I urged them to build a home, they agreed, and I embarked on finding them a lot to build and finding a construction company. During this process, I fell in love with real estate, especially new construction, and it gave me the courage to be a single mom and the ability to support myself and my two girls.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

For the first time in my life, in my 30s, I was finally pursuing a job that I loved every minute of the day. As the saying goes, if you do what you love, you won’t have to work a day in your life. My fears of not being able to support my children were very real. Everyone and their mother has a real estate license in Florida; what made me special to where I can make a living selling homes? But I found a niche: new construction, designbuild was different. My clients are looking for a turnkey product; from the purchase of land to curtains on their windows and furnishings, I offer my clients a hassle-free experience in obtaining their dream homes. I am fortunate to have the chance to work with a lot of celebrities, especially professional athletes and entertainers.

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

Autumn Schmidinger Sales

Manager, Bulla Gastrobar, Coral Gables Coral Gables “As a mother of an 8-year-old and 6-year-old who works 50-55 hours during the holidays, this is a busy time for my personal and work life. When it comes to holiday shopping, the trick is to do it early and online. After I get a gift list from my kids, I go online— Amazon is my go-to place—and usually buy it all in one swoop before Thanksgiving. December just gets too crazy. Because I must decorate the restaurant and my home, I get inspiration from magazines and then usually keep the tree and decor simple with nice red and green colors. I shop for both places at once, so my house usually looks the same as the restaurant. Ha!”

Natalia Sol

Senior Vice President, After School-All Stars, Doral South Miami “Holiday shopping can be stressful for me—especially when trying to find something that is truly meaningful and heartfelt. We are in the process of moving into a new house, so to keep things easy, I’m making a list of my friends and family members and donating to our favorite local charities in their names. Also, my birthday falls on Christmas Day, so I’ve learned not to be bound by dates. For those who have multiple families or places to be on Christmas Day, spread out your holiday celebrations on different dates so you don’t have to be in five places at the same time and end up missing out on quality time.”

Shane Danner

Sales Manager, Dragonfly Izakaya & Fish Market, Doral Doral

“When it comes to holiday entertaining, I try to take the easy route: the low- prep and highyield approach. For cocktails, I choose something already prebatched or have sake and wine for guests to pour themselves. For food, I go for something that’s easy but hearty, like a pork butt that I baste in the oven, and offer steam buns and lettuce wraps as complements. I also encourage poke bowls, which are trending right now, so hosts can set-up a station for guests to make their own bowls with tuna or salmon. Guests can get creative with their bowl ingredients, and as the host, you can socialize instead of being in the kitchen the entire party.”

Steven Bradley Floor Manager, KINGS Dining & Entertainment Doral Doral

“Since I work as a party planner, I think the best way to cut down on stress when entertaining is knowing your guests—think about what they like from music to food. My wife is Venezuelan, so when we throw a holiday party, we’ll make an arepas bar with a variety of arepas. While we make them the day of so they’re super fresh, everyone in attendance is given a specific role, from prepping to cooking, which takes the stress off one person during the holidays, and we all get to enjoy the end result. When it comes to music, I build a playlist that offers something for everyone, from my in-laws’ favorite Latin musicians to my old-school hits from Tom Petty.”

Brett Beveridge CEO/Founder, The Revenue Optimization Companies (T-ROC) Coral Gables

“We all know the holidays can be stressful, so I plan each year for the family to get away for some bonding time so the stress doesn’t get to us. As far as work goes, I encourage the team to decorate their space and get in the spirit. It’s a team-bonding experience and we have fun creating winter wonderlands in our Coral Gables office. I also organize a companywide Christmas party with significant others invited—it’s a nice way to unwind from work while pulling everyone together outside of the office. I also try to decrease stress at the office by having activities, like games or mixers, after hours with the team.”

Iva Kosovic

Director of Corporate Partnerships & Friends of New World Symphony Coconut Grove “With social engagements and my work schedule with NWS, which has its own event schedule, planning is key. Ordering gifts in advance, organizing menus, reaching out to friends, sending holiday cards on time—all of this takes meticulous planning and spreadsheets are a godsend in those situations. I stay on top of my calendar and make sure that all my professional responsibilities are taken care of early in the month so that I can relax during the most festive times. It’s important to do something that relaxes you amid the chaos. Personally, I love to play piano during this time of year; even the most stressful of days can be made easier with the sounds of holiday tunes.”

Dr. Bill Kelley Physical Therapist, USA Sports Therapy Coconut Grove

“Before any holiday party, I set aside 30 minutes of cardio, even if it’s just a quick round of push-ups and jumping jacks at my house, to offset the eating and so that I don’t feel guilty. I usually have one cheat day a week, and I stick to that during the holidays, scheduling them on Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve, and then I also get rid of any leftovers so that I immediately return to clean eating. My biggest trick to staying on track is that when I receive any treats or food gifts at my home or office, I put them in my office break room, so I don’t have it at my house where I will be tempted to eat it all and I’m sharing with others.”

Vivianne Garcia-Tunon

Spa Consultant, Wonder Flower Coral Gables “For me, being less stressed during the holidays means being organized to the point that I take my family Christmas pictures the second week of October, I have my Christmas cards in the mail the day before Thanksgiving, and my tree is up by the Saturday after Thanksgiving. With so much happening during the month of December, I believe that taking care of yourself is very important. I book a therapist at least once a week for a 90-minute massage, which in addition to being relaxing also helps boost your immune system, and I start December with a trip to the dermatologist for rejuvenating treatments like a facial and Botox. If you look good, you feel good! I also keep essential oils such as lavender and peppermint in my nightstand to aid in better sleep, because rest is so important.”

Marile Lopez

CFO, Jorge Luis Lopez Law Firm Coconut Grove “The key to avoid stress during the holidays is organization and prioritizing. We have five children ages 22 to 11, and they have their own events, and then my husband and I have 29 events this season from chairing galas to social engagements. I use an Excel spreadsheet of upcoming events and what I’m wearing to each one, which I update each month. I keep my evening gowns in a closet with a picture of the gown on the outside, along with an index card with the date and the event that I’ve worn the gown. Every season, I look to see what I haven’t worn, and plan where I will re-wear a gown, and then usually buy or have Ivonne de la Vega design two new dresses. It helps me stay organized and not stress over what I will wear so I can enjoy this busy season.”

Anthony Lopez Owner/Operator, LCL Food Services Pinecrest

“The holidays are a crazy time for everyone, so my wife and I always like to plan out Noche Buena, Christmas Day and the rest of the holiday break to make sure we see everyone on both sides of the family. Making a plan, communicating it and sticking to it is the best way to make sure that we can spend plenty of quality time with everyone. It’s also about reducing stress for others in need, so I always try to make time during the holiday season to give back. I support Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade by going to buy my Christmas tree at the Club on 32nd Avenue and US 1, as well as supporting the Ronald McDonald House at Jackson Memorial Hospital in any way that I can!”

hen Miami’s First Couple of music set out to do something special, it invariably succeeds. The golden duo of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, who brought conga and an exotic sound to the far reaches of middle America (and the world) in the 1980s, are devoted to keeping their Cuban culture alive, first with Larios on the Beach, where J-Lo met her first husband, waiter Ojani Noa, then loads of projects including the smash Broadway hit On Your Feet!, and now Estefan Kitchen, their latest culinary venture in the Design District’s lush Palm Court. Stroll through the catwalk of high-end boutiques developer Craig Robins lured into their new Miami homes, take a left at Valentino, past Bvlgari, Vacheron Constantin and the sparkling diamonds shimmering inside Jason of Beverly Hills, and you’ll arrive at Estefan Kitchen and enter into the intoxicating environment that emanates from its outside bar and wide-open entrance. Based on a conceptual design by Emilio Estefan and Aldo Ducci of Arkitekto Co., the black and white interiors, elegant bisazza floors and striking iridescent blue-tile walls are inspired by 1950s Cuba and the vibrant design, culture and warmth that permeated Havana and the island. Men in guayaberas and women in fine dresses arrive with a touch of nostalgia for a bygone era, surrounded by a new generation attracted by unabashed glamour and great food. The air fills with lively conversations as guests perch on white mock-crocodile banquettes that flank the expansive dining room and are punctuated by sparkling mosaic palm trees that command the room’s center.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Lechon Flatbread; the bar at Estefan Kitchen; Lechon Asado.

The Estefan coat of arms lights the back wall. The atmosphere begs one to start with a cocktail, and Estefan Kitchen doesn’t disappoint, with a selection of signature drinks and “worldfamous mojitos,” including the Chusma Fina (“pretty girl” in Cuban slang, or so we’re told), a sparkling number made with rum, mint leaves, lime juice and sugar cane, and topped with Martini & Rossi prosecco. Although potent, there’s no need to settle for just one glass; it’s available in a pitcher (as are all the restaurant’s mojitos) for $65. Come to Estefan Kitchen with an appetite, for as in any good Cuban home, Abuela is ready to feed you ʼtil you burst with her delectable cuisine, only in this case, it’s Chef Odell Torres bringing Cuban favorites to life.

Men in guayaberas and women in fine dresses arrive with a touch of nostalgia for a bygone era, surrounded by a new generation attracted by unabashed glamour and great food. Start with handmade Ham or Chicken Croquetas, made with a creamy béchamel sauce and balsamic guava reduction or Bacon Wrapped Maduros, sweet plantains wrapped in Applewood smoked bacon, queso blanco and Estefan Kitchen Guava Cream. The Mini Cuban Sandwiches are just as you would imagine: bite-sized portions of the classic pressed sandwich made from slow-roasted pork, ham, fontina cheese, pickles and mustard, but with a little extra: tiny Cuban flags on toothpicks stand proudly on each morsel. Small plates include the not-to-be-missed Lechón Crispy Moros with award-winning roasted pork, sweet plantains, grilled onions, cilantro sauce, organic honey and truffle oil. Yes, it is as mind-blowing as it sounds, and makes it harder to progress to main courses, as nearly every dish is as tempting. Favorites include Tuna Tartare with fresh tuna, avocado, fresh-squeezed lime juice, gluten-free soy sauce and sesame oil; Masitas de Puerco, mojo-marinated crispy pork bites, grilled onions, mojo and fufu (mashed green and sweet plantains) and Salmon Tiradito, made with thinly sliced salmon, fresh-squeezed lime and orange juice, red onion, pickled pineapple, jalapeño pepper and chili cream.

Chef ’s specials, or Tajasos, change weekly, and sometimes more, for Chef Torres infuses more traditional Cuban favorites into the menu, which includes such favorites as Lechon Asado, Chicken Vaca Frita, Paella for two and the famous China Cubana, Cuban-style fried rice with shrimp, steak, chicken, bacon, egg, vegetables, sweet plantains, gluten-free soy sauce and sesame oil (a vegetarian option is available). Talented servers break into song accompanied by a pianist seven nights a week, while weekends (Friday–Saturday) usher in a Buena Vista Social Club-mood with piano, horns and a conga beat. When the band takes a break, some of the best, rarely seen videos from the 1980s (think A-Ha’s “Take on Me,” Earth Wind and Fire’s “September” and Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration,”) keep the happy vibes going. The restaurant continues the afternoon Cafecito tradition with an express café for traditional Cuban “grab & go” items, espresso drinks, fresh juices and healthy shakes available throughout the day. D

ozens of models brandish Mercedes-Benz’ vaunted ThreePointed Star on their hoods, but none is as steeped in automotive lore as the SL-Class roadster. The direct descendant of the 300SL gullwing and roadster of the 1950s, the SL-Class is as legendary as a great many of the privileged men and women who have owned one. For 2018, however, a second six-figure roadster may be found next to the stately and luxurious SL in the Mercedes showroom: the Mercedes-AMG GT roadster. Low, sleek and extroverted, the new GT Roadster is a purpose-built sports car that captures the spirit of the original 300SL even better than the actual SL. Certainly, each of these Teutonic two-seaters is utterly delightful to drive, but visually, dynamically, and conceptually, they’re extremely different creatures—one for drivers who like to chill, the other for those who like a thrill.

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ SL-CLASS (BASE PRICE RANGE: $89,195—$222,995)

As the beneficiary of over 60 years of continuous improvements, the 2018 SL-Class is an exceedingly evolved automobile, engineered to deliver all the benefits of convertible ownership while eliminating most of the known drawbacks. The Nappa leather on its splendidly comfortable seats, for example, is heat-resistant so as not to fry one’s thighs

And of course, instead of a fabric top, the SL-Class utilizes a retractable hard top with a transparent center section, with a trick Magic Sky Control panel optionally available to electronically darken the overhead glass with one button. New for 2017 is the ability to raise or lower the top at speeds up to 25 miles per hour; also, the cargo separator in the trunk is now powered. That said, the SL is graying at the temples. Its design dates back to 2013, and, like an aging starlet, it entered its mid-life years with a new nose and a butt tuck, thus bestowing a more youthful, if somewhat less

distinct, visage upon all SL models from 2017 on. And indisputably luxurious though it may be, the cabin is peppered with buttons and dials that appear to have come from another era altogether. True to its name—or half of it, anyway (SL officially stands for Sport Leicht, or “Sport Light,” in German)—the SL is remarkably lightweight despite the considerable mass of its complex retractable hardtop. It’s not terribly sporty, however, even with the optional active suspension that actually leans into turns like a motorcycle. The SL450’s quiet, smooth, 362-hp V-6 is perfectly sufficient, I think, though the SL550’s 516-hp V-8 is throatier and obviously quicker. Even more go-power comes in with the AMG SL63 with its rowdy 577-hp V-8 or the AMG SL65, with its prodigious 621-hp V-12. Prices start under $90K for the SL450 and top out at an eyewatering $223K for the SL65. For better or worse, those lofty prices, combined with a softening market for high-end coupes and convertibles in general, ought to ensure that new SLs will remain rare.

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

2018 MERCEDES-AMG GT ROADSTER (BASE PRICE RANGE: $125,395—$157,995)

As the market for luxurious grand tourers like the SL dries up, six-figure sports cars are selling just fine, thank you. Until recently, Mercedes watched enviously as its cross-town rival in Stuttgart, Porsche, sold $100K-plus 911s as fast as it could build them, but since 2015, Mercedes has challenged the prolific Porsche with a gorgeous, all-new sports coupe called the Mercedes-AMG GT. Three years later, the longawaited Mercedes-AMG GT roadster has arrived, giving 911 Cabriolet buyers a shapely new alternative with a big personality. In pictures and especially in person, the GT roadster is achingly beautiful. Its extreme, long-nose proportions nod to early 300SLs without copying them, and its toothy “Panamericana” grille treatment looks so good it will appear on nearly all Mercedes-AMG models moving forward. The 469-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that powers the base, $125K GT roadster would be enough to satisfy pretty much anyone on earth if only Porsche didn’t offer the 911 in some 22 different body styles and powertrain combinations. To face off against the faster 911s, then, is the stupefyingly fast, $158K GT C roadster, which bristles with 550 hp underhood while receiving a raft of AMG-developed chassis

68

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

upgrades and an exhaust note sent down from the gods. Meanwhile, the GT C ratchets up the visual drama with two additional inches of rear width. As with the SL, the GT Roadster’s seats come standard with Airscarf, but the seats themselves split the difference between conventional sport seats and racing shells, with thin frames, aggressive bolsters and truly beautiful craftsmanship. Mercedes-AMG has packed a lot of design into the roadster’s snug cabin, including huge round air vents in the dashboard and a center console that’s home to an octet of round buttons and dials for quick adjustment of the various AMG performance bits. With its rich mix of materials, it feels no less luxurious, however, than the SL—somewhat of a surprise and an indicator of how masterfully Mercedes-AMG combines performance with panache in its sensational new ragtop. The GT coupes and roadsters may take a while to establish themselves in the sports car world, but in the Mercedes world, they’re already a hit.
