Chef Angelo Elia continues rolling out more locations of his beloved Angelo Elia Pizza, Bar & Tapas with a fifth, this time right here in Doral. Just opened last month in CityPlace, the newest Angelo Elia Pizza offers up a menu of traditional Tuscan recipes similar to those served at the chef ’s other locations, plus a few exclusive dishes along with the freshly made Italian pastries from its in-house bakery. “I wanted this new Angelo Elia Pizza, Bar & Tapas location to also incorporate my Italian café concept, Angelo Elia The Bakery Bar, because I knew having a wide variety of offerings from the two concepts would appeal to the city’s diverse and growing population,” says Elia. “I immediately fell in love with CityPlace Doral’s high-end design and the quality of the shopping center and knew that this location was a perfect fit.” Angelo Elia Pizza in Doral is the ninth establishment that Chef Angelo has added to his roster of dining concepts, and he plans to continue expanding his restaurant empire by opening two more restaurants later this year. The event will be emceed by CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo and Y-100 Miami on-air personality Nick Pena. New to this year’s festivities will be the Taste of the Nation Speakeasy, where six of the hottest mixologists in South Florida will be paired with a select spirit and serve a specialty cocktail of their creation. Afterwards, the after party will take place at R House, where chef/owner Rocco Carulli will team up with other restaurants to treat guests to tasty bites and pours late into the night. General admission tickets are $125 per person; VIP tickets are $175 per person and include admission to the after party. If you haven’t heard of the Vixen Workout yet, consider yourself in-the-know. Founder and creator Janet Jones has cleverly disguised exercise as an exhilarating, hip-hop dance class that burns anywhere from 400 to 1,000 calories in 60 minutes. Channel your inner Beyoncé or Ciara as you learn some sexy dance moves inspired by Miami’s nightlife (don’t worry, the moves aren’t too complicated). Weston residents can join the “Vixen Army” at popup classes every Monday and Wednesday night at 8:30 at AMP Fitness. 111 Grand Palms Dr., Pembroke Pines; 954.450.5535; www. vixenworkout.com

JONES’ TIPS TO LOOK LIKE A VIXEN THIS SUMMER: • We all know drinking water has tons of benefits, but let’s face it, water can be, well, basic. To get a refreshing kick, infuse your waters to make them more appealing. Try lemon and mint. • Choose low-calorie alcoholic drinks and stay away from sugary options. My go-to is a “Strawberry Citrus Vodka Cocktail,” which includes muddled fresh strawberries, fresh mint, a natural sweetener, citrus vodka and fresh-squeezed lemon juice.

• Keep this mantra in mind: Bikini over BBQ. When you’re at a summer BBQ, it’s easy to fall prey to cheeseburgers, chips and potato salad. Choose healthier alternatives such as grilled chicken, shrimp and veggies.

Watermelon, a summer staple at barbeques and picnics, is now becoming the basis of a popular drink for athletes and the health-conscious to refresh and hydrate. One brand, Tsamma Juice, is made right here in Florida by Frey Farms, where the farmers grow, harvest, crush and bottle their watermelons by hand. “Each bottle contains over one-and-a-half pounds of fresh crushed watermelons, and our proprietary process gives Tsamma the highest amount of lycopene, potassium and L-citrulline Sarah Frey-Talley on the market,” says founder Sarah FreyTalley. “The amount of L-citrulline in watermelon is important. It dilates your blood vessels, enabling rapid rehydration and muscle recovery.” Frey-Talley says her juice is made from watermelons with seeds, because the original seeded variety that we all grew up eating is the best-tasting watermelon. Tsamma Juice is sold at Publix, Fresh Market and other local grocers. www.tsammajuice.com

Serena Bassil “I have always been a lover of fashion and a big supporter of women, which is why I guess I have chosen the profession of a stylist—they go hand in hand. Especially with social media putting pressure on both women and men to look a certain way and live a certain way. I try to take the pressure off and help them to see their natural-born beauty and give them a different perspective on their style, while always keeping true to who they are. That is my passion and I’m grateful to live it everyday.”

STYLIST

Mom to Olivier, 9, and Savion, 6

The best part of motherhood… The unconditional love. You could never imagine that feeling, and it goes both ways. It’s something so special. On keeping her sanity: I escape to the beach for the day. Watching the ocean relaxes and calms me. it gives me a chance to quiet my mind and appreciate the beauty of where we live and my wonderful family. Bonding time rituals: Traveling and exploring different countries and

cultures. Olivier, my oldest son, was born in Florence, Italy, where my Lebanese husband and I met and lived for 10 years, so exploring the world is important to us. I want my boys to understand how fortunate we are in the U.S. and also the beauty of other cultures. We are going to Cartagena next week and I’m so excited to bike around the city and explore. Greatest hope for her children: That they find their passion in life. It’s so important to do something you love, whether it’s their profession or just a hobby.

Erica Saylor

FOUNDER & EVENT PRODUCER, BLUE MUSTARD PRODUCTIONS

Mom to Benjamin Saylor, 8, and Stella Saylor, 6 “I’m a wife, a mother and an event producer with a lot of heart. I really enjoy the process of developing unique experiences and memorable moments for clients and their guests. While I definitely want to be a creative force in the industry, I think it’s more important to inspire people with my work, and hopefully along the way empower them by sharing the life and business lessons I have learned in the last 15 years.” The best part of motherhood… Being able to share all of the special things in life with my children and watching their reactions—often delivered with some witty commentary—to everyday moments. And the greatest challenge: Raising my kids—the responsibility of nurturing them to become good, kind, ethical and responsible human beings—is the biggest challenge of my life. On keeping her sanity: My weekly girls’ night! I have an amazing group of strong women in my life, and we truly bring out the best in each other, usually over a boozy meal and some dancing. Bonding time rituals: Travel. From the States and the Caribbean to Europe and South America, I really enjoy seeing the world through their little eyes. They truly learn and grow with every new adventure and culture we experience together. Greatest hope for her children: I want them to have fun, dream big, take risks and always believe in themselves.

They are truly best friends. And the greatest challenge: I think social media is one of the biggest

challenges all parents face right now. Trying to make sure they make wise decisions when it comes to texting and posting on social media. One bad decision can change their future forever. It’s a lot of pressure on them.

Bonding time rituals: We watch basketball games, watch basketball games and watch more basketball games. We also love to take family trips, try new restaurants and hang out at the house together.

On keeping her sanity: Working out! I set aside one hour every morning before my day gets started. It’s my personal time when no one can call me or get in touch with me. I take that time for myself every single day. Also, volunteering and giving back to the community gives meaning to my life.

Greatest hope for her children: I hope they are kind, hard-working, honest, young men who respect everyone and always have a smile on their face.

Natalia Sol

VICE PRESIDENT OF EXTERNAL RELATIONS AT AFTER-SCHOOL ALL-STARS

Mom to Valeria, 8, and Valentina, 3 “I’m the oldest of three girls. I married my best friend. Miami is my hometown. I have the privilege of helping at-risk kids through my dream job. I am grateful to have amazing and loyal friends, near and far (those include my sisters). My parents brought us to the U.S. from El Salvador almost 35 years ago, started their own company and raised us to be good people. I love my parents and if I can do just a fraction of what they’ve been able to do, that would be a huge accomplishment.” The best part of motherhood… Having a front-row seat to watch our girls grow and discover themselves is a privilege. As a parent you get to see things—funny things, amazing things—about your kids that nobody else gets to witness but you. It’s the ultimate VIP ticket. And the greatest challenge: As nurturers, we want to take care of everyone and everything. We want do it all...and we can, just not at the same time. A great and ongoing lesson for me has been accepting my limits and being okay with saying “I can’t right now.” On keeping her sanity: 1) Prayer—which gives me comfort in knowing that I am actually not in charge. 2) Deep-tissue massage 3) Good TV drama (#Madame Secretary, #This is Us) 4) Excelling at my job

Bonding time rituals: My husband and I love traveling with our girls— opening their eyes to beautiful parts of the world and discovering it together. Both our girls have had a passport since they were 2 months old. St. Augustine said, “The world is a book and those who do not travel are condemned to reading but just one page.” I want to give them volumes! Traveling together is one of the best ways to experience adventures that teach us essential life skills: openness, kindness, safety, self-navigation, communication, innovation, resourcefulness, negotiation, planning and research, gratitude and friendship. Greatest hope for her children: I want my girls to discover who they are and love what they find, knowing that they were made in God’s love and they are perfect just as they are. I would also love to see my girls be best friends and support each other unconditionally for always.

Mom to Alberto Jose Moreno, 12; Andres Moreno, 10; and Alessandro Moreno, 5 “I have been blessed to be living out my dream. For the past 16 years I have been with CBS 4 News, where I anchor the weekend morning newscast and report for the early morning weekday newscast. Storytelling is my passion; being able to share with the community where I was born and raised what is going on here brings me much joy. Also, being able to help so many people in need by sharing their stories to our hundreds of thousands of viewers everyday.” The best part of motherhood… Just being their mother. Every kiss, every hug and every time they tell me “I love you, Mami,” it melts my heart. And the greatest challenge: Being a mother is the hardest job I have ever had. I always say I have two full-time jobs—being a mom and being a journalist—but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I thank God each and every day for my amazing husband, who is an incredible father and has always supported me in my career. I wake up at 3:30 a.m. five days a week, so by 2 p.m. I am exhausted; however, I try to work out at least three to four days a week, and believe it or not that gives me the energy I need to fulfill my mommy duties. Bonding time rituals: I have three boys, so as you can imagine they have tons of energy. I love to be with them outdoors as much as I can. We also love the movies and traveling. Greatest hope for her children: My greatest hope in life for my children is that they grow up to be respectful, honest gentlemen just like their father. They are already wonderful children, great brothers (when they want to be!) and I hope one day they will be great husbands and fathers.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Whether by aerial view or at ground-level, CityPlace stuns with its dancing waters and eye-catching lights and signage; William Shewalter takes a seat in one of the residences at The Flats; a bedroom inside The Flats; the fountain moves to the beat of a playlist containing more than 20 tunes.

Doral is hopping.

Unless you’ve been to a Madonna concert, you probably haven’t heard the song “Born This Way” at 90 decibels. And even then, it wasn’t choreographed to dancing waters from a $4 million “show fountain,” the visual centerpiece of the new CityPlace Doral, the dynamic dining, retail and living destination that recently opened and is transforming the city with a lively gathering place for residents and South Floridians. The fountain, perhaps one of the most modern in the world, utilized global experts to help choreograph the sound, lights and movement to a playlist that includes more than 20 songs, each of which took 20 hours to program on 200 different devices with up to 124 settings that perfectly orchestrate water and color to move with the music. Beethoven (whose “5th Symphony” is one of the selections) is surely rolling over. If one thinks of Bellagio, then that notion is outdated, says Diamond “The Vibe Guy” Williams, the technical guru with Related Development in charge of the ultra-modern backbone of CityPlace Doral. Flanked by in-ground fog machines, the show fountain plays one to two songs every half hour from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. on weekends, turning the destination’s centerpiece Entertainment Plaza into an impromptu dance floor. One wonders if the adjacent Amadeus headquarter employees use the blast of music as a modern-day Flintstone quarry whistle to slide down the imaginary dinosaur and into CityPlace’s myriad dining and entertainment options. Three years in the making, every one of CityPlace Doral’s 20 restaurants and 12 boutiques were carefully chosen to give Doral what it lacked: a self-contained gathering place for all ages to dine and be entertained in a meticulously designed 30-acre “urban village.” The Main Street “Boutique Boulevard” houses The Flats upscale apartment rentals, boutiques on either side, and leads to restaurants and entertainment options including CineBistro, Improv Comedy Club and Kings America, a 20,000 square-foot bowling alley and restaurant. Moreover, there is ample parking—about 2,400 spaces—plus valet. “We think this is a cutting-edge environment and what residents

want,” says William Shewalter, senior vice president of Related Development, the mastermind, along with Arquitectonica, behind CityPlace Doral. With 6,000 people attending its opening on March 17, and sweets shop Sloan’s Homemade Ice Cream breaking all-time opening records with 6,000 servings, there is clearly no lack of curiosity. Unlike many entertainment destinations, CityPlace “has all the experiential, restaurant, retail and residential components folded into it from the outset, not as an afterthought,” says Shewalter. “We wanted to gather everything people desire in one place so they don’t have to get into their cars.” Its closest cousin might be Lincoln Road, the South Beach promenade designed in the 1950s by famed architect Morris Lapidus, something Doral was lacking since its incorporation in 2003. “CityPlace is a significant step forward in creating a cultural, entertainment and business center in Doral,” says founding and current Doral Mayor Juan Carlos “JC” Bermudez. “This is the vision the residents and the council of Doral had so many years ago. It’s great to see it come to fruition.” With all the bells and whistles, plus Doral’s first Fresh Market at one’s doorstep, it’s no surprise CityPlace is attracting a mixture of demographics and generations to The Flats, its luxury two-tower apartment building in the center of the development. Renting briskly

and ahead of forecast, the small community is a blend of college students, career professionals, families, empty nesters and retirees who want to be in the middle of the action. Starting at $1,645 for a studio apartment, “it’s at least $500 a month less expensive than Brickell,” points out Shewalter, plus less traffic and no 45-minute waits for an elevator from a high-rise apartment. As downtown Miami shimmers like a distant mirage and the hypnotic beauty of planes glide into Miami International Airport, The Flats pool deck becomes a hip, elevated, private viewing platform that overlooks Entertainment Plaza, which, beyond the show fountain, is rich in programming: live music pulsates every Friday and Saturday evening, and special events are planned for holidays including upcoming July 4. Car shows, an art festival and karaoke nights are being planned, and more is on the horizon. A CityPlace app was just unveiled that allows its users the ability to make dinner reservations at the destination’s 20 restaurants (see sidebar for more), in addition to providing information about events, promotions and apartments still available at The Flats. A jumbotron screen across from the centerpiece fountain rivals that of stadiums. “This is Doral’s new living room,” says William Shewalter. And it’s in the house with all the action.

54

MAY 2017

Lisbon is bursting at the seams with both charm and chill,

though it’s often overlooked in the shadow of other European capitals. Our advice: Don’t miss it. The Portuguese economy is slowly rebounding, thanks in part to a program from TAP Portugal airlines. Their Portugal Stopover program allows travelers to stay for 24, 48 or 72 hours in one of Portugal’s major cities (and the Azores) on their way to one of TAP’s 29 other destinations. The best part for you: Miami International Airport is a hub for TAP Portugal, which means the coastal country is closer than ever. Even if you’re just en route, a 24-hour stopover in Lisbon will be the highlight of your trip. 7:00 a.m.

HISTORIC HOTEL

If you’re coming from Miami, the nonstop flight will put you at Lisbon Portela International Airport (LIS) in just eight hours. A taxi ride from the airport into the center of the medieval city, crowned by a castle, takes about 25 minutes. Check into the Solar do Castelo hotel, a member of the Historic Hotels of Europe, and the only lodging located inside the castle walls. With just 11 rooms, the former mansion will feel all your own. A full breakfast is included with your stay, so if you haven’t had time to grab a bite yet, settle into a down-filled armchair in the lobby with a coffee and Lisbon’s signature sweet, pasteis de nata, a custard-filled tart. Or, take it outside to the veranda, lined with fragrant lemon trees. No one will blink an eye if you sneak a sip of Port from the bottle in your room before heading out. You’re in Portugal, after all.

The Castelo de Sao Jorge dates from the second century and sits at the highest point in Lisbon, from which visitors can take in beautiful panoramic views.

56

MAY 2017

Praça di Comércio is the main square by the river, where you can catch a bus tour of the city.

9:00 a.m.

12:00 p.m.

Round the corner to the main entrance of the Castelo de Sao Jorge, which originally dates from the second century BC. The Moors ruled the area until the 12th century, during the Second Crusade. After that, the castle became the residence of Afonso III and his court. The breathtaking overlooks from the hilltop, the highest point in Lisbon, offer panoramic views of the city and the wide, rolling Tagus river. Traverse the castle’s outer walls for a different photo opp at every cardinal direction. Take a few minutes to view the artifacts inside the museum, which include pottery—including the very first azulejos, the tiles for which Portugal is known today—and evidence of humans in the area dating back to the sixth century BC. Sit for a sec and snap a selfie with one of the vibrant peacocks that have made the hill their permanent home.

Once you reach the main square by the river, Praça do Comércio, hop on the Yellow Bus “Seven Hills” tour of the city via canarycolored tram. If you don’t get off at any of the stops, the narrated tour (12 languages are available) will take about an hour and a half, and is the best way to get acquainted with the major landmarks and geography of the city if you’re time-crunched. Each main point of interest comes with a brief history lesson and thorough description of some of the most interesting architectural and cultural stops, including Lisbon’s narrowest home, just six feet in depth. You’ll also wind through some of each neighborhood’s quaint streets, some barely wide enough for the tram to pass. Lisbon’s traditional quarters of Alfama, Castelo and Bairro Alto are where most of the city’s culture was born, but if there’s cash burning a hole in your pocket, the elegant neighborhood of Lapa is the place to make it rain.

GIMME MOOR

11:00 a.m.

ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE

If you look up from any street, you’ll notice cables running overhead. The Lisbon trams and funiculars have helped citizens and tourists traverse the cities steep streets for more than 100 years. It might be tempting to get on the tram and glide down the hill on one of these historic vehicles, but hold off. You’ll pass plenty of adorable shops and cafés on your way to the center of the city at the foot of the hill, including boutiques selling handbags, umbrellas, wallets and more made from one of the world’s most sustainable and versatile materials, almost exclusive to Portugal—cork. More than half of the world’s cork comes from Portugal, and the impermeable, stain-resistant material is harnessed by innovative designers for way more than wine bottles.

ELEGANT EATS

So far, your inner history buff has taken in all of Lisbon’s rich Romantic, Medieval and Gothic architecture. But the modern and the surreal have a spot here, too. At Espaco Espelho D’Agua, land meets sea in an experimental space dedicated to modern art and gastronomy. Make a reservation in advance to sit on the terrace for lunch, where you’ll people-watch on the promenade of the stark white building. This isn’t your traditional Portuguese fare, though you’ll find odes to the cuisine throughout the menu. a flight of reds or whites to start your oeno-journey.

4:00 p.m.

Stumble (carefully!) across the street from ViniPortugal to the Arco da Rua Augusta to watch the sun set from the city’s best vantage point. The trip to the top costs just one Euro, and you’ll stop in the middle to discover the history behind the arch’s construction. On All Saints Day in 1755, the Great Lisbon Earthquake just about leveled the city, and killed more than 50,000 people. The devastation was widespread. Before then, Lisbon was one of Europe’s most prosperous port cities, a hub for exploration, art, and science. After the earthquake, the entire city was rebuilt. The arch, commissioned by Queen Augusta, commemorated the earthquake and celebrated the city’s renaissance. At the top, look out over the Tagus River and take sunset selfies with bird’s-eye views of Castel de Sao Jorge and other landmarks in the background.

MUST-SEE MONASTERY

A few minutes’ walk from the restaurant is a UNESCO World Heritage site, Jeronimos Monastery, a perfect place to walk off your multi-course feast. Originally commissioned in 1495 and completed in 1601, the monastery is a national treasure and the hour-long tour of the buildings is a must. Here, you’ll be able to view the tomb of explorer Vasco de Gama and traverse the mosaicked fountains, where symbols of Christianity meld with pagan astrology. The monastery’s buildings also house two major national museums worth exploring— the National Archaeological Museum and Maritime Museum, celebrating Portugal’s long history of seafaring exploration. Does the name Christopher Columbus ring any bells? 5:30 p.m.

WINE O’CLOCK

Head back to the Praça do Comércio, load up a tasting card and grab some glasses for a tour of Portugal’s wine regions at ViniPortugal. The self-serve wine dispensers are filled with 20 different bottles from the country’s 14 different wine-producing areas, including the islands of Madeira and the Azores. Up until now, you might have only sipped on vinho verde or ruby Port. Here’s your chance to lounge in the vast wine hall and find a new favorite bottle to take home and share. The wine room’s mission is to bring awareness to the world of Portugal’s vibrant and sophisticated local viticulture, and tastings occur throughout the day. Ask one of the docents at the front desk to suggest

DINNER AND A SHOW

Take the funicular back up the hill toward the castle—after all that wine and spiral-staircase climbing, you’ll need a break. Chapito a Mesa is part circus school, part artist colony, and all weird and fun. Enter in through the shop, where the resident artists sell their creations. You’ll surely want to take home jewelry made from recycled cars. Under the big top, open a bottle of wine while you wait for your table upstairs. When you make a reservation, ask for a table for two facing the west windows. At night, the lights of the city twinkle below. The restaurant can get raucous, as animated conversation is highly encouraged. Enjoy out-of-the-box dishes like grilled Iberian pork and Portuguese lamb.

alph Pagano is getting Naked in Fort Lauderdale. Following the success of Naked Taco on Miami Beach and Naked Lunch in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, the Hell’s Kitchen and Iron Chef alum has opened Naked Crab Seafood Kitchen and Cocktail Bar in Fort Lauderdale’s B Ocean hotel, formerly the Rat Pack favorite Yankee Clipper. B Ocean has undergone a complete transformation, while retaining glimpses of its history and storied past as a favorite of 1950s-era entertainers. Turn left at The Florida Bar and down the corridor toward the neon-lit Naked Crab sign, you’ll see photos of Marilyn Monroe and her contemporaries (sans entourage), the original Clipper Room menu (soup, .15) and memorabilia from another era. And then with a flash of neon, one enters the dimly lit den of Naked Crab, or as Chef Pagano describes it, “a stripped-down, dressed-up crab and seafood house, cooking up classic signatures with the freshest, most delicate, impeccably sourced fish and sushi, where fundamentally, raw is hot.” The man has a way with words. Part entertainer with a wicked sense of humor and fondness for hip hop, poker and horse racing, Chef Pagano brings his signature

whimsy to the 150-seat restaurant that has both indoor and curbside patio seating. A multicolor neon sign on one wall reads: “Teach a man to fish,” above a freehand drawing of squid and fish playing a game of poker while a seahorse looks on. Miami graffiti artist Carlos created this and other playful pieces on walls, columns and supporting beams for a quirkiness that matches Chef Pagano’s mischievous side. The menu is varied, fusing food and flavor during breakfast, lunch and dinner. The “all day” menu is divided into a variety of sections, from starters including standouts Bacon, Eggs & Toast with osetra caviar + crispy pork belly confit ($31) or Signature Super Crab Dip ($15); Chilled Plates, including a variety of hearty salads and poke bowls ($12-$16); “Seaside Classics” such as The Lobster Roll ($18) and Crazy Sexy Tuna ($21) with sesame-seared tuna + edamame; the tongue-in-cheek “These Carbs Don’t Count” selections include pasta dishes like the Cavatappi ($21), Pescatore ($23) and traditional Linguini Clam Sauce, white or red ($21). “Butcher Shop” is for the meat aficionados, from the 6-oz. Filet Mignon ($24) to the 32-oz. Porterhouse ($79); “Whole Fresh Fish” includes line-caught daily options served grilled or crispy; or, for a combination of flavors, try a Menage a Trois ($59) of filet mignon, crab stuffed shrimp + garlic shrimp; the Steak & Stinger ($59) with a 16-oz. ribeye steak + cluster snow crab; or the Key Party ($59), comprising one pound of large Florida stone crab claws and blackened snapper topped with crab + cracked conch. One highlight is an up-to-date “Fish Scorecard” featuring the day’s fresh fish, oysters, clams, lobster and daily crab specials available at the help-yourself seafood bar. Oysters flown in from select coasts include the plump and briny Plymouth Rock from Massachusetts, Black Duck Salts from cold Canadian waters and the favorite Naked Cowboy and

Naked Cowgirl from Long Island. One of the most popular dishes is the visually stunning three-tier Seafood Tower, which ranges from $50-$100 and comes with a variety of clams, oysters, shrimp and crab (“That’s crazy!” exclaimed our neighbors in delight). Chef Pagano’s take on a seafood Turducken, the Crabster, is a decadent combination of two-pound Dutch Harbor (Deadliest Catch) Red King Crab stuffed with shrimp, crab and lobster meant to be dipped in butter ($100 serves up to three). And don’t miss the #GetNaked selfie wall. It’s pure Pagano. differences Audi’s all-new S4 sedan and S5 coupe bring equivalent upgrades in performance and style.

By Steve Siler

A

ll three big-name German automotive brands offer their compact luxury cars in three performance potencies. In culinary terms, we could characterize them as seasoned, spicy and OMG-my-mouth’s-on-fire HOTTTTTT!!! At Audi, this would describe the new-for-’16 A4 sedan and the new-for-’18 A5 coupe, their sportier S4 and S5 variants, and the stupendous RS4/RS5 models, respectively. At this point, RS versions of the current A4 have not been confirmed by Audi, and the recently unveiled 2018 RS5 won’t arrive until late this year at the earliest. But the good news is the S4 and S5 models—the spicy ones—have just arrived, and once you’ve driven one, you may wonder if Audi needs an RS4 or RS5 at all. You’ll only need to drive one to come to that understanding, as we drove both and found them to be virtually identical in character, however different they are in appearance. This was hardly surprising, as the two cars share nearly everything under their skin, from the “MQB” architecture that makes them so solid to the twin-turbo V-6 engines that make them so fast. The styling upgrades are also applied equally, including a larger (identical) wheel/tire package, modified grille slats, shimmery silver mirrors, more technical front bumper trim and rear bumpers with diffuser vanes and quad exhaust tips. Both secure their front seat occupants in supportive sport seats with side bolsters that can be tightened or relaxed to fit most body types, as well as faux suede ac-

cent panels and aluminum or carbon fiber trim. All S4 and S5 models get Audi’s nifty “Virtual Cockpit” instrument cluster, a customizable 12.3-inch screen that can be configured to look like conventional dials, a full-width Google map-based navigation screen with smaller instruments, or a mix of both. And what of that common character? Do they even have character? (We’re talking about German sedans, after all, so that’s not a given.) Well, happily, they do have some character—more than the A4/A5

models on which they’re based though not as much as, say, the frisky Mercedes-AMG C43 sedan and coupe. Their sheer competence as sport sedans/sport coupes, from their propensity to gather momentum regardless of the weather—thank you, sport-tuned “Quattro” all-wheel drive—to their abilities to retain so much of that momentum in corners makes them innately more fun to hustle along a twisty road. The sharp exhaust note from the 354-hp turbocharged V-6 is a) audible, and b) enjoyable, also adding to the thrill factor when accelerating, though we would kind of like to hear even more of it. And the telepathic precision of the steering and pan-flat cornering attitude made possible by the lowered suspension with adjustable shocks beg you to take the next turn ever faster than the last. That said, all the while, both cars feel like they’re holding something back, like they want to show you their wilder side but for some reason don’t, seemingly content as the driver’s humble servant rather than a partner in crime. Maybe that’s what the RS models are for. Of course, there are a few differentiators between the S4 and S5 worth mentioning. As a four-door sedan, the S4 is easier to get in and out of (especially for rear-seaters), is more spacious inside, and at $51,875, is $2,175 cheaper. The slinkier S5 boasts a more curvaceous body and a more intimate interior, but its low-roof coupe body, two-
