POOL LabShow offers up designs not found in your (former) favorite boutique. The store, which caters to women who are all about individual style, was inspired by co-founder and creative director Beatriz Carrillo, a Spain native who made it her mission to bring up-and-coming design talents from Europe when she relocated to Miami from Madrid and couldn’t find pieces here from her favorite designers—smaller, less-established labels. POOL LabShow carries more than 20 of those brands, such as Ailanto, Alvarno, Angel Schlesser, Ball Pagès, Cortana, Majestic, Giada Forte, Jorge Vázquez, Juan

Strike
UNLUCKY Protect your home from lightning during hurricane season—and all year—with these 3 expert tips.
It’s that time of year again—we’re at the halfway point of Hurricane Season. Hopefully, yours won’t be one of the unfortunate 1 in 200 homes that’s hit by lightning every year, but just in case, we decided to ask for some advice on the subject from insuranceQuotes senior insurance analyst Laura Adams. How can homeowners prevent lightningrelated damage? Have a qualified contractor install a certified lightning protection system. These systems can’t prevent a lightning strike, but they do help conduct
a charge to the ground, which reduces the likelihood of fire or explosion in your home. The easiest way to protect electronics and appliances is to unplug them when you first hear thunder or when you go out of town. Having surge protectors between them and your electrical outlets can help, but aren’t failproof if you get a powerful lightning strike. What is covered by homeowners insurance for lightning-related incidents? A standard homeowners insurance policy covers damage caused by lightning, such as fire or power surges. It also pays to repair or replace damaged personal belongings—such as appliances, electronics, and furniture—up to certain limits. Plus, if you can’t live in your home while repairs are being made after a strike, “additional living expense coverage”
reimburses a certain amount of your temporary living costs, such as a hotel and meals. Any other tips and resources for learning more about lightning safety? It’s important to know that if you hear thunder, you or your property could be at risk. Don’t stay outdoors in a storm. Some of the safest places to take shelter are in your home, any large enclosed building, or inside a hard-topped vehicle. If you’re indoors during a lightning storm, move away from windows and don’t lean on the walls. Avoid using the plumbing, since the pipes in your home may conduct electricity. Stay away from electronics, corded phones, or any device connected to an electrical outlet. Lightningsafety.noaa.gov is a good resource to learn more lightning safety tips.

Juan y Nelson Entertainment has mastered the art of changing along with the music industry— and thrives as a result.
The history of Latin music cannot be written without mentioning Juan Hidalgo and Nelson Estevez. For 35 years, the Doral-based duo has led their record company, Juan y Nelson Entertainment (J&N Ent.), using innovation as the key to their success, and three decades later they’re still going strong. “We started with a $13,000 investment and thank God for the success he has given us ever since,” says company president Juan Hidalgo. “We are the only monopoly-free record company and very proud of that. Little by little, we have been changing the dynamics in the company to stay in tune with all the modern technology. Digitalizing is now an aggregate value in the business that helps music reach the most remote places

throughout the world. I believe in innovation for world globalization.” Juan’s brother and partner Nelson Estevez notes that the bright side of this business is its unpredictability. “You never know where the next hit will come from,” he says. “So through the years you never get bored, and it all becomes something to remember. We have been changing, which is an important factor in business. Of all the independent record businesses created several years ago, we are the only one still in the market. We have produced merengue, salsa, balada, bachata and as a company are open to every and anything…and we are going to keep doing this, as long as it is well done and they are willing to be directed.” J&N Entertainment presently works with new talent in the urban genre, the most popular right now, according to
Juan, in addition to pop and salsa. They also have ongoing projects with other exponents of the tropical genre, have built a recording studio as well as a television studio to record music videos and presentations, and are working on a digital teaching format so that children from other countries learn music at low cost. Have you ever received a beauty product sample and immediately become so obsessed that you scrape every single drop from the tube? For me, it’s Elemental Herbology, a UK brand that’s based on the “Five Element Philosophy” of Chinese Medicine (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) meant to benefit different skin types. While the natural line is free of all the bad stuff like parabens and sulfates, it boasts a powerhouse of potent botanical ingredients. “The products use therapeutic levels of plant compounds, herbal extracts, essential fatty acids, botanical oils, vitamins, pure essential oils and antioxidants, which results in well-nourished skin,” says Cassandra Forrest, director of spa at the new Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, where they use the award-winning products in their body treatments. Standout products are the Vital Cleanser, which warms up and contains yummy ingredients like Manuka honey with malic acid, and the Vital Glow Overnight Resurfacing Cream—every time I use it, my skin glows like I had a facial peel from a dermatologist in my sleep. “I was born in Brazil, and since I was little I used to design my dresses and a seamstress used to sew them for me. In my high school years, I wanted to travel the world to be a model or a fashion designer, but my mother wouldn›t allow me to because she was scared for my safety. I decided to go to school and study tourism. After I completed two years, I went to Boston to study English. That’s where I met my husband, Manny Ramirez, and together we have two beautiful boys.” Personal style: I dress depending on my mood and where I’m going. I can be trendy one day, edgy or girly and really elegant, but what defines me is keen attention to detail, quality and one-of-a-kind pieces. • 3 closet staples: A white blouse with personality, vintage-style jeans, silk scarves. • Most regrettable fashion purchase: A Balmain studded biker jacket that I fell in love while I was in Paris. Since they didn’t have my size I bought it one size down, and I never wore it because it was too tight. • Favorite designers: For clothing: Isolda, Adriana Degreas, Sandra Mansour, Luisa Beccaria, Maticevski, Rosie Assoulin, Brandon Maxwell, Givenchy, Dior, Hellessy, Adeam, Esteban Cortazar. • For shoes: Gianvito Rossi, Aquazurra, Rene Caovilla, Sophia Webster. • Style philosophy: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Since 1999 I have assisted hundreds of people on their journey towards optimal health and fitness. This is my calling; it’s what I was born to do.” Personal style: I would call it Miami simple chic. I’m in workout clothes 99 percent of the time, but when I’m out and about, I’m in jeans, a bright-colored tee and Prada sneakers. At night it’s jeans, a custom Tom James button-down and Ferragamo boat shoes. • Style crime he can’t pardon: I think it would have to be wearing sunglasses on the back of your head. • 3 closet staples: 7 For All Mankind jeans, Orlebar Brown tees and Prada sneakers. • Go-to designers: Vilebrequin for bathing suits and shirts, Prada for shoes, Tom Ford for cologne. • Style philosophy: “Keep it simple—less is the new more.”

YVONNE ROSEMEIER
Jewelry artist and owner/designer of Yvonne Rose (Yvonnerosejewelry.com) “I am a creative nomad. Originally from Honduras, I’ve lived in Miami for over 25 years. Since I was a young girl, I had a strong desire to do something creative. I discovered the art of jewelry-making and fell in love with working with my hands…to transform raw materials into something beautiful. Through my travels, I developed a deep appreciation for semi-precious stones and their incredible healing properties. I love to travel and explore the world. There is a rawness and edginess in fashion and design outside the U.S. that is palpable.” Personal style: My personal style is sophisticated bohemian. I seek refuge in the contrast of cutting-edge looks mixed with classic pieces. I can take a very simple classic piece and give it life with something new, exciting and interesting, including natural and raw materials of stone and metal. • On breaking rules… The one rule that everyone should break is: Take off one accessory before leaving the house. Why? Fabulous women from Iris Apfel to Pop star Rita Ora have proven time and time again that piling on the baubles can be fabulous and totally idiosyncratic. • 3 closet staples: My three closet staples are layered pieces from my Yvonne Rose jewelry, designer denim and lady boots—from black booties with a slim heel and subtly pointed toe to edgy moto boots and over-the-knee boots. • Fall trend favorites: I’m in love with military jackets and oversized denim jackets. • Prized style possession: A YSL Blood Lust leather jacket. • Style philosophy: “Fashion is an expression of oneself. Whatever’s going on inside you, let it out. Show it on your body.”

Causing A Lather Mexico City-born soap star Pablo Azar acts in telenovelas, paints in Wynwood, drives for Uber and campaigns to unionize acting projects in Miami. BY LINDA MARX

Azar with Venezuelan actress Carolina Tejera during the filming of the movie Miami On Alert.
lthough his dream was to play soccer, Hispanic soap star Pablo Azar, raised in a small town in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, studied acting because his mother thought it would be a good way to make friends. He took folklore dance and acting classes to hone his skills. By age 16, the family had moved back to Mexico City where he was born, and he continued his mission with photo shoots, modeling and attending casting calls. One day he saw a sign for TV Asteca, a Mexican multimedia conglomerate, that said “bring a headshot.” He jumped at the chance for exposure. “I did an audition, was one of 15 picked out of 2,000 to attend a school, and a career was born,” says the handsome, green-eyed Azar, 35. “I got into the character creation process and fell in love with acting by doing novelas.” Now living mainly in Miami (and back and forth between Mexico City), where he acts, paints, drives for Uber (really) and lobbies for better acting conditions, Azar got his first whiff of South Florida in 2005 when he was sent to Miami to shoot Second Chance, a novela for Telemundo, the Spanish-language network owned by NBC Universal. In it, Azar played a cocky, energetic character who captured the attention of audiences around the world. “I was cast as a silly guy who fell in love with too many ladies,” he laughs. “It was a huge success here and internationally in 100 countries. I got lots of work doing novelas and other projects for Telemundo after the success of that novela.” He also won three Best New Actor awards in Latin America for this role and was able to promote the soap around the world, which broadened his reach. Azar did another project in Colombia, then three years ago was cast in his first English-language show, a TV series for TBS called Wrecked, playing Pablo the fighter. “My character was a starving guy who fought for food,” recalls Azar. From there, the actor did another telenovela for Telemundo called Le Sand, and now he is doing short films for his own company called PAYPA Productions. When he’s not acting, Azar enjoys a second career as an artist. He paints from a Wynwood studio located not far from his Miami digs. He is known as a pop realist who invented a unique, fantasy-journey painting style that he calls “Toonymania.” He has

reinvented the visual arts mixing cartoon and color in images of everyday life, and uses small figures to create one painting, forcing the viewer to look up close and see more than initially meets the eye. “My main objective is to have the observers gaze at my work, losing themselves in a timeless dimension where I invite them to discover what I denote as my creatures,” he explains. “There is always something beneath.” In perfect harmony, his diverse “creatures” fuse together to make one larger and complete picture. (He was a finalist in the painting festival “Le Touquett” in France.) Azar shows his work in Miami, Delray Beach, the Florida Keys and in Chicago, and has had international exhibits in Belgium, Paris, London, Mexico City and around Colombia. He also draws murals and keeps busy with the business of selling art. To make extra money, he drives for Uber, a gig that has led to meeting interesting people. “I have a big ego,” he admits, “and for a while I didn’t want people to know I was an Uber driver. But I am not rich. Although I do well with novelas, they still don’t make me wealthy.” (He adds that his Latin American fans erroneously assume he is rich and driving a Bentley around Palm Beach and Beverly Hills.) So after feeling embarrassed about the sideline for a period of time, he now embraces it as an interesting experiment, a slice of life, and fodder for his upcoming works. What could be better than moonlighting in Miami? “I see how others behave and speak out in the car,” he says, amused. “They think that they are alone so they talk intimately about subjects they should not be talking about. It has become an interesting acting experience for me, and at the same time, it makes me money.” The Uber driving is part of his overall plan to help improve the lives of actors. He says Telemundo actors “don’t usually make as much money as actors in American soap operas.” On a more serious note, Azar started a campaign to unionize acting
projects with Telemundo and Univision, encouraging an agreement to protect members of his craft from starving and spending downtime in the unemployment line. “You need protection in Spanish because there is no pension or overtime,” he complains. “That lack of protection is what forced me to look for a side job. But we won the election, and now we are negotiating to get a SAG-Aftra contract. Conditions have not yet changed, but I am hoping that they will.” Azar intends to get even more political in coming years so he can put pressure on local and state government to allow more tax incentives and get companies to come back to Miami and produce TV. His goal is to become president of Miami SAG/Aftra. With his contacts, heartthrob looks and ability to talk to people on a positive level, he is a good candidate. “I would like to bring new projects to Miami for actors to have choices,” he says. He also makes time for sports, especially soccer—playing and watching it both here and in Mexico City. He enjoys the game of ping-pong and goes to the gym to stay fit. For recreation and downtime, he likes to play video games and spend time with his girlfriend, a Colombian actress. (He was married for six years and is now divorced.) They go to restaurants with friends, travel by car to experience new landscapes like Captiva Island, Micanopy and Indiantown in Florida, and other out-of-the-way places

around the Southeast. “I love traveling to small towns and seeing how others live,” he says. “I don’t drink and I don’t like clubs. I prefer visiting weird places.” Currently, he is working on a project with a poem that his late father wrote. It is not ready for prime time yet but he hopes to finalize the project in coming months to share with others. Down the road, he wants to continue acting, doing many more diversified projects in English. “I want to act in more shows like Wrecked, and I will go to more auditions,” he says. “I will continue to act in Spanish shows, and I hope to do more films. Basically, I do what comes naturally. My art started as a hobby, then became a profession.” Now he wants to take his acting to the next level and at at the same time, make life better for his fellow actors. Could we have a Hispanic Ronald Reagan in the making? Time will tell.

Miramar has one of the largest Jamaican populations in the U.S., so it’s not surprising that its adopted son and Jamaican native Paul Bennett would find a receptive audience for his authentic Jamaican cuisine.

ou won’t find the Jamaican national flag, life-sized pictures of Bob Marley, or photos of exotic waterfalls on the walls of Roun-A-Goosey, Paul Bennett’s authentic Jamaican “fine dining” restaurant in Miramar. The first-time restaurant owner says the cuisine is his native island’s ambassador and justly, takes center stage. No one walking through the door is just a customer. “You are family,” says Bennett, flashing his signature megawatt smile. Every child knows him as “Uncle Goosey.” While Bennett has taken liberty with the term “fine dining” (as he explains, it’s to differentiate from mostly takeout Jamaican spots), he’s created a warm, family atmosphere within a relatively new Mediterranean-style development centrally located on Red Road. Groupings of silk roses grace the restaurant’s six indoor tables, as the cozy place bustles with takeout orders (“Jamaicans traditionally like to eat at home,” explains Bennett). It was the Jamaica native’s lifelong dream to open a restaurant, but professional detours led him to spend a decade as the Chief Administrative Officer of Meteorological Service in Jamaica, then relocate to Miami for an MBA and 12 years as the City of Miramar’s Human Resources Analyst. In 2016, Bennett switched gears and made his dream a

reality, first choosing the all-important name, Roun-A-Goosey, a nod to his Jamaican nickname and the place to watch sporting events. When people at home would ask, “Where are you watching the game?” the response would inevitably be “Roun-A-Goosey,” i.e., Goosey’s house. Next, he hired Jamaica native and 30-year culinary veteran Lucal Gordon as his executive chef to create authentic dishes that Jamaicans would recognize and newbies would savor. Finally, the opening date of June 13, 2016, was considered auspicious as Bennett’s lucky number, past dorm number and teen soccer jersey are all 13. Those who have never tried Jamaican food are in for a treat here. Those who consider themselves aficionados are seen coming and going all day for the familiar flavors and spices and recipes that are, for the most part, kept under lock and key, as is the ingredients for “Goosey Punch,” the sweet, flavorful, non-alcoholic concoction that provides a nice balance for the spiced delicacies Chef Gordon presents. The menu is simple and manageable, highlighting the best of Bennett’s island cuisine, including flavorful brown stew chicken (all the meat is seasoned the day before and allowed to marinate), oxtail with butter
It’s generous, home-cooked food that transports Jamaicans back to “the rock.” beans, curry goat, chicken or shrimp, and the ever-popular jerk pork and jerk chicken, all with flavors that pop yet don’t overwhelm. Chef Gordon combines scallions, thyme and bell peppers with Jamaican seasonings to give nearly every dish a spicy kick. Flavorful grouper and red snapper are served in a variety of styles: brown stew, roasted, escovitch-style and stuffed with callaloo. Every entrée comes with a hearty cup of soup, which changes daily (don’t miss Thursday’s red peas soup with beef and dumplings, which is a meal in itself), or salad and a choice of white rice, rice and peas or vegetables. It’s generous, home-cooked food that transports Jamaicans back to “the rock,” with prices and variety that allow multiple visits per week. Dinner entrées start at $13, while lunch entrées begin at $10, with weekday lunch specials offered for $5.95. A Healthy Choice menu includes jerk chicken salad, wraps and chop suey with prices that range from $8 to $16.50. Weekends are for saltfish with ackee or callaloo, stew peas, and cornmeal or hominy porridge, which Bennett says will satisfy any appetite for an entire day. New to Roun-A-Goosey is the Friday After Work Jam, with music from 6-9 p.m. indoors and al fresco on the patio, and Live Music Sundays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with a variety of local artists, including the local Bush family, featured on the Today show and touted as “America’s most amazing family.” It’s all part of the dream for Paul Bennett, who as a natural host and island ambassador, invites all to come Roun-a-Goosey. 2017 GENESIS
G80V. GENESIS G90
Hyundai’s spin-off luxury division starts. By Steve Siler
I
n 2008, Hyundai drove a stake in the luxury automotive ground with its feature-laden, mid-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan, the Genesis. But Hyundai had loftier ambitions than the Hyundai brand name could support, so it ripped a page from the Toyota/Lexus playbook and elevated Genesis into a standalone luxury brand. Now six unique models are planned by 2020. Just as Lexus debuted in 1989 starting with its full-size, four-door flagship, the LS400, the Genesis brand entered the scene with a palatial sedan, the G90, and to avoid confusion, the Hyundai Genesis sedan was re-christened Genesis G80, positioned one tier down the price/ prestige ladder. Having spent many comfortable hours driving both the G90 and G80, I have no doubt that, despite what people think of Hyundai, the Genesis-branded vehicles will be competitive not only on price, but on substance.
2017 GENESIS G90 5.0
As a luxury brand borne of a brand that’s well-known for being quite the opposite, Genesis must prove that it’s not simply pilfering gussiedup econo-cars but rather automobiles born and bred for the modern aristocracy. Shouldering most of that burden is the G90 flagship, which faces off against the Lexus LS, Audi A8, even the Mercedes-Benz SClass. So does it belong? A luxury car’s merits are arguably earned from the inside out, and the G90 checks all the important boxes. Soft-close doors seal the cabin, creating optimal listening conditions for its 17 shimmering Lexicon speakers. Pillowy seats provide heavenly comfort front and rear, with the long wheelbase bestowing serious stretch-out room for reclining rear seaters. Genesis banished hard plastics, leaving soft hides, polished

wood and high-grade metallic materials in their place. A 12.3-inch infotainment system is controllable from every outboard seat via front and rear rotary dials. While its competitive set offers most of this stuff in some form, none makes everything standard, including power rear sunshades, head-up instruments, semi-autonomous radar cruise control, and more. The customer needs only to decide between the V-6 and the $2,500-pricier V-8 model, rear or all-wheel drive, black or beige upholstery, and exterior color. Ideally, flagship sedans should be as powerful as the VIPs inside them, and fortunately, neither the 365-hp turbocharged V-6 in the G90 3.3T Premium nor the 420-hp V-8 in the G90 5.0 Ultimate is remotely underpowered. But the G90’s most impressive aspect may be its uncanny smoothness. In contrast to many top-shelf sedans that transmit certain road textures to the cabin, the G90 lets nothing in, leaving passengers feeling like they’re floating above the ground. I personally prefer more buttoned-down handling, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the G90’s surreal glide. If only the G90’s styling was so inspiring. As a brand establishing its very identity, Genesis needs a flagship with certain distinctive features destined to become Genesis hallmarks. Alas, most of its exterior bits seem derivative—and I’m not saying they are—but the bolt-upright, six-sided grille sure does recall the Audi A8, and there’s palpable BMW 7-Series influence in the sheet metal. The Benz S-Class appears to have informed the sloping rear while the S-Class’ Maybach spinoff could

have donated the thick band of chrome surrounding the windows. The G90’s pastiche of elements comes together nicely enough, but if Genesis expects to gain the respect of these customers, it can’t sneak in through the back with an innocuous-looking sedan. While the G90 fails to beat any of its stalwart competitors at their own game, it does makes some impressive plays, particularly insofar as feature content, spaciousness, ambience and smoothness. Most important, there’s nary a whiff of Hyundai-ness to be found except in price, which at $69,075 is thousands less than its closest competitor.

2018 GENESIS G80 SPORT
Genesis may be a new brand, but the G80 actually arrived for 2015 as the second-generation Hyundai Genesis. Technically a mid-size sedan, but seeming larger with its long, blunt nose and slab sides, the suddenly substantial rear-driver felt more like something a luxury brand should be selling, especially with its optional 420-hp V-8. And that’s exactly what happened, of course, when the G90 and the Genesis arrived for 2017. Now that the G80 wears a premium-brand badge—a winged medallion that reads “GENESIS” in all caps—how does it fare next to such fancy four-doors as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series and Cadillac CTS? Well, its bona fides are solid—quiet cabin, comfortable seats, impressive space front and rear, and an ability to iron out every wrinkle in the road before the occupants feel them. Very close inspection reveals its inner Hyundai, however. For example, the dashboard’s cliff-like height and asymmetrical A/C vents seem more Sonata than S-Class; ditto the plain-Jane script fonts used for buttons and displays screens, and at night, I counted four different shades of white among those various white-on-black gauges and displays. Minor as they are, each of these details represent what separate thoroughbred luxury cars from their plebian counterparts. For what it’s worth, the G90 didn’t
70
SEPTEMBER 2017
suffer from any of this, and we looked. The new-for-’18 G80 Sport I tested borrows the G90’s 365-hp twin-turbocharged V-6 and eight-speed automatic, effectively splitting the difference between the G80’s base 311-hp (non-turbo) V-6 and the aforementioned 420-hp V-8. In addition to cutting the 0–60 time down to the low five-second range, it boasts a retuned suspension (that’s still soft), upgraded brakes, bronze-tinted exterior brightwork, a mesh grille, dark chrome wheels, aero skirts, blackout mirrors and headlamps surrounds, plus carbon fiber interior accents. However comprehensive the upgrades are, the G80 Sport never achieves a sporty character, primarily due to its weight, which is among the heaviest of all mid-size cars. With the bronze trim, however, it looks great, and even at $56,225—$14K more than the base V-6 and just $1,750 shy of the cushier V-8 model—it remains a strong value next to its German counterparts. Make ours red. To test drive the Genesis G90 or G80, stop by Rick Case Genesis at 3550 Weston Road, Davie, or Rick Case Genesis, 925 N. SR 7, Plantation.

Ubiera toasted his guests while signing select bottles in the space, which was transformed into a rum cellar with copper punch bowls, lanterned lighting and the golden bottles all around.
