What’s going on in town & its surrounds

Making IT Modern Venus Williams and her V Starr Interiors set the tone for the clubhouses at Modern Doral. Venus Williams’ design firm V Starr Interiors is making its mark here in Doral, designing the clubhouses for Modern Doral, the much-anticipated master-planned community of 319 single-family luxury homes and about 150,000 square feet of space that will comprise shopping, recreation and fine dining spots. “Our interiors are a modern representation of quintessential mid-century Miami and boast sculptural lighting, fun artwork and pops of color with cool, open floor plans,” explains Williams. “These are family communities, so we have kids’ rooms in the club homes, which is distinct from past projects. There are Lego walls and custom murals by Jeffrey Noble that maintain the modern feeling.” The firm designed three two-story clubhouses, one for each subdivision, and while all are different, the clean, open design is common to all three. They also include meeting areas, a fully equipped fitness center, library, business center with media room and kitchenette, a swimming pool, spa, sun deck and BBQ gazebo areas. Modern Doral is expected to be completed later this year. To learn more, visit moderndoral.com.

Food Fight Eat to beat disease: Dr. Sonali Ruder can show you how.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Dr. Sonali Ruder, a Broward physician who’s been dubbed the “Foodie Physician,” is here to tell us that what we eat plays an important role in the fight against the disease. “While there is no one specific food that can prevent breast cancer, there are certain foods to boost your immune system, fight inflammation, and help keep your risk as low as possible.” Ruder touts studies that show a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of breast cancer; as well, a Mediterranean diet of fish, fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes and olive oil may reduce the risk of estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer. So, which foods hold the power of prevention?

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, arugula, and cauliflower are rich in phytochemicals that fight cancer. Use quick-cooking methods like stir-frying or sautéing to retain as much of the phytonutrient concentration as possible.

Orange foods—think sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, cantaloupe and mango— are rich in carotenoids, which have a preventative effect on breast cancer.

Red foods such as tomatoes, watermelon, guava and red bell peppers are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps stop cancer cell growth.

Drink green tea. It’s known to boost the immune system, and although the exact mechanism is unknown, researchers believe that the high level of polyphenols in tea helps kill cancer cells.

played basketball, and a brother who excels at professional and minor league baseball, it’s arguable that a career in sports was in Sam Dorman’s DNA. Raised in Tempe, Arizona, an area near Phoenix where rocks are more prevalent than bodies of water, Dorman spent his early childhood playing baseball and doing acrobatics—until he discovered a swimming pool. “At age 8, I went to a pool in Tempe and headed for the diving board,” says Dorman, now 26 and a resident of Miami. “I liked the board and started doing flips.” He quickly enrolled in morning diving classes while he was still a student. After a few short months, the coach pulled his parents aside for a chat. “I was still only 8 years old, and I worried I was in some kind of trouble,” laughs Dorman. “But the coach told them I needed to work with some big-time coaches and divers at Arizona State University (ASU) because I had potential.” So he began to train under Olympians Mark Bradshaw, Marc Briggs and Finland’s Joon Puhakka, three standout talents who so inspired Dorman that he began to enter diving competitions at age 9. “I trained five days a week while going to school and won my first national championship at age 15,” he says. “I studied Joon’s dives when he was on the ASU team and watched him at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics. He is one of my role models.” But Dorman, who was obsessed with his sport from the very beginning, didn’t progress as he desired because of an accident in the eighth grade. During a dive, he shattered his foot, which forced him to stay out for an entire year and undergo a complete reconstruction of his foot. Although he took that year off to recover, he was so smitten with his sport that he went to the swimming pool each day just to watch everyone else work out and dive. “I was totally addicted even then,” he says. At 18, he accepted a scholarship to University of Miami (he majored in mechanical engineering), where he trained under Olympian Randy Abelman. Dorman did well—he won the 2015 NCAA Championship, which gave him the NCAA record, landing his name next to Abelman’s at the coach’s home pool in Iowa. After diving in international and domestic competitions for several years, he joined Indiana diver Michael Hixon as his three-meter synchronized diving partner only three months before last year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Amazingly, they won the U.S. trials in their first competition together. Despite such minimal training time, the two superstars realized their Olympic dreams by winning a Silver Medal, missing the Gold by only 4.11 points. “To avoid the pressure leading up to the Rio events, we treated the Olympics as any another competition,” says Dorman. “We were underdogs and together we had never done an international competition.” The thrill of winning the Silver was overwhelming for Dorman. “I was so excited!” he says. “Seeing my parents and coach so proud is an indescribable feeling. I always strive to make my parents and coach proud. That

he eats most of his meals there. “I love the idea that Ray and Shannon get all of their organic produce from Homestead farmers and everything I eat is a fresh, home-cooked meal,” he says. “As a jock, I am picky about what I put into my body. No crap. Grown offers fast food that is extremely healthy.” For example, at Grown, Dorman goes for a breakfast of egg white omelet with avocado, spinach, tomato and onion accompanied by a bowl of fresh fruit. For lunch, he chooses a simple green salad with apples, candied walnuts, chicken, tomato, onion and cucumber with vinaigrette. He also opts for a smoothie, like mango with fresh berries and other selections depending on what is available. “I eat light at this time of day,” he says. For dinner, it’s free-range rotisserie chicken, grilled, wild caught salmon, sweet potatoes, green beans or shrimp with a cup of “great soup,” such as the gluten-free

“Seeing my parents and coach so proud is an indescribable moment is something I will never forget.” And, of course, he wants to experience more and more of those moments. He is already training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, learning from his mistakes, experimenting with new dives, and picking everything apart to make himself better. Naturally, all this excellence requires a solid fitness program, which Dorman maintains despite the fact that he suffers from a bad back. Monday through Friday for 90 minutes, he does rehab for his back and exercises to strengthen it. From 10 a.m.-noon and 2 p.m.-4 p.m. on those days, he is at the pool concentrating on diving skills the first hour, and skill and drill basis with work techniques for the second hour. He also does workouts on dry land, exercises in the gym, and works on the trampoline and boards, from which he lands in a foam pit. Tuesdays and Thursdays he lifts weights for the legs, core, shoulders and overall maintenance. He also does stretches and warm-ups. “I spend 90 minutes in the water working on competition dives,” he says. “Fitness and diving are a full-time job. But I love it.” Dorman also follows an admirable nutrition program. It doesn’t hurt that he is the Brand Ambassador for Grown, the modern, USDA organic-certified fast-food restaurant in South Miami owned by basketball star Ray Allen and his wife, Shannon. The restaurant’s healthy dining menu appeals to Dorman so much that

feeling. I always strive to make my parents and coach proud. That moment is something I will never forget.”

vegan minestrone. Dorman will occasionally have steak, and as for a cheat food, he loves Hawaiian pizza. He also has a sweet tooth. “I like Enlightened ice cream,” he says. “It’s on the healthy side and has protein with low carbs.” Dorman stays away from sugar most of the time because his lifestyle is governed by his sport. And he tries to get nine hours of sleep a night. “I am training hard every day, so I need to be up for it,” he says. “Being fit as an athlete means you have to be in good shape. Especially to jump. The body is under pressure and keeping the exercise pattern steady helps me stay in good shape.” Part of that training time is spent with his partner at Indiana University in Bloomington. At a July international competition in Budapest, they placed sixth in the world. “My partner did great, but I didn’t do so well,” he admits. “I learned a lot and know I can have off days. I missed the last dive, so we went down in ranking.” Since it was only their second big competition together, there is plenty of time for them to train together and win more Olympic medals. In his scarce spare time, Dorman likes to spearfish because he loves the water and can never get enough of it. A normal weekend will find him fishing in the sea or free diving at the University of Miami campus pool. For fun, he likes to travel. He still visits his family in Arizona and loves his home state. But what’s most important to him in recent years is to try and live a balanced life that includes more than diving. So he decided to extend his family. “I adopted a dog to be more like a normal person,” laughs Dorman, who now owns a 50-pound Hungarian hunting dog, 2 1/2. “I got him from a Florida breeder, and I love him. He’s well trained and keeps me sane. I take him everywhere. He’s my dude.”

ORGASMIC QUINOA SALAD

Georgette Cardenas Assistant Director, Telemundo Network {DORAL}

“My absolute favorite healthy place is Delirio Fresh Co. in Doral, where the menu has great variety and they are constantly adding new dishes to spice things up. In the back, there is a cute outdoor seating area with string lights overlooking a lake. I always find myself coming back to their Orgasmic Quinoa Salad. The crunchiness of the kale and cabbage combined with toasted coconut and blue cheese crumbles—all tossed with passion fruit vinaigrette—offers a great mixture of flavors. I can order it with or without chicken, and quinoa is such a good source of protein for a rich salad. I usually combine it with a cleansing juice that has cucumber, lime, ginger and cayenne pepper.” 2475 NW 95th Ave., #8, Doral, 305.499.3304; deliriofreshco.com

My new favorite dish is the Wood-Grilled Boneless Rainbow Trout, which is perfectly seasoned and moist and is served with crushed potatoes, heritage carrots and grilled lemon. It’s hearty enough to refuel after hitting the gym and is just 450 calories. The dish reminds me of eating fresh trout in Sun Valley, Idaho, on a road trip after college, a rare one to find in Miami!” Seasons 52, 321 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables; 305.442.8552; seasons52.com

“Since my personal life and practice focus on natural health and wellness, Plant Miami is my go-to restaurant. Just like its name, Plant serves exclusively raw plant-based cuisine, and sources organic and biodynamic ingredients—all in a superbly exquisite setting. My much-loved dish is the Zucchini Lasagna, which is made with raw, living food, without any dairy or pasta. The combination of the flavorful, rich heirloom tomato sauce and macadamia ‘ricotta,’ along with the crunchiness of the zucchini slices, is otherworldly and will leave you planning your next visit before you actually leave the table.” Plant Miami, 105 NE 24th St., Miami; 305.814.5365; plantmiami.com

TONNO ALLA LIGURE

“Believe it or not, my favorite healthy place is Riviera Focacceria Italiana in Midtown Miami. Both the owner, Paolo, and the chef are from the Italian coastal region of Liguria, and the focaccia from that region is renowned for its crisp, olive oil-saturated crust and soft, puffy interior. It’s ironic that a restaurant named for bread covered in melted cheese serves the freshest, low-fat dishes you can imagine—with a menu based on fresh seafood, salads and vegetables. My favorite main course dish is the Tonno alla Ligure, which is seared, sliced tuna served over a warm, chickpea purée and topped with chopped pine nuts, Taggiasca olives and tomato. You’ve never had anything like this, and best of all, no guilt!” Riviera Focacceria Italiana, 3252 Buena Vista Blvd., Miami; 786.220.6251; rivierafocacceria.com inDORAL MAGAZINE

Bianca Morrison

Senior Account Executive, Harrison & Shriftman {DORAL} “My personal go-to is Ice Box Cafe, one of those ‘old-but-gold’ types of places, and the new location at CityPlace Doral puts the most incredible spin on a Miami classic. Everything is so good, and good for you, and there’s nothing better than enjoying my meal al fresco on the green and later indulging in a little retail therapy. My favorite dish is the Faroe Islands Salmon. It’s a perfect salmon fillet, and while I am guilty of loving Pad Thai noodles, Ice Box presents this dish as a much healthier alternative in the form of a Thai-style roast vegetable quinoa and a delicious peanut sauce. This dish literally melts in your mouth and you don’t miss anything when it comes to flavor.” Icebox Cafe at CityPlace Doral, 3450 NW 83rd Ave., Doral; 786.374.2326; iceboxcafe.com

“I love to eat fresh fish and my go-to healthy spot is House Kitchen & Bar in Coral Gables. The Tuna Poke there is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, so my skin is treated to a nice glow, and incorporating a little seaweed into the poke adds vitamins A and C, which are also great additions for radiant skin. It’s low in carbs and has just the perfect amount of spice—plus, it goes well with a skinny margarita. Another healthy option there is the flavorful Rotisserie Free Range Chicken. It’s impossible to duplicate at home… I’ve tried!” House Kitchen & Bar, 180 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables; 786.482.5599; housekitchenbar.com

Lauren Powell Investigative Producer, WSVN {DORAL}

“When I’m in the mood for something healthy I love to stop in Doral’s hidden gem, Michi’s, which has a café vibe with a modern, rustic theme. I love their Tuna Poke Bowl that’s packed with fresh tuna, seaweed salad, mango and my favorite food, avocado. I usually substitute quinoa for the brown rice and I love using the plantain chips as an edible spoon! To wash it all down, I order a Detox Juice because the sweetness of the pineapple and freshness of the cucumber pair well with the tuna. And, if I want to stay in for the night, they deliver all their healthy goodness.” Michi’s, 10437 NW 41 St., Miami; 305.629.9292; michismiami.com

HIYASHI WAKAME

Attorney and Counselor at Law, Albert Bordas, P.A. {PINECREST} “When I need a quick, healthy meal, Akashi Japanese in South Miami, a cozy place with a huge menu of creative sushi and Japanese tastings, is the place to go. The fish and seafood are packed with nutrients and plenty of minerals. I start with the Hiyashi Wakame, a cold seasoned seaweed for Miami’s hot climate, and the Tuna Tartare, which is nice and light. I end with the Alex #2 Roll, rolled with shrimp tempura, crab salad, masago and topped with avocado, eel sauce and a crunch. This roll has just the right kick and the shrimp is right out of the ocean.” Akashi Japanese Restaurant, 5830 S. Dixie Hwy., South Miami; 305.665.6261; akashisushi.com

The restaurant provides a peaceful respite from a busy day and is a great spot for a business meeting or a casual lunch, and everything on the menu is fresh and delicious. My go-to item is the Peri Peri Chicken Wrap. This seemingly simple whole wheat or spinach wrap is bursting with complex flavors. The chicken is grilled to order and the creamy avocado is a perfect balance to the spicy Peri Peri seasoning. The wrap also comes with a side salad to complete this flavorful, healthy and satisfying meal.” 1533 Madruga Ave., Coral Gables; 305.667-0504; scottsbistromiami.com

“I have to go with Deli Lane Cafe in South Miami for breakfast or Sunday brunch where my go-to breakfast is the Zola Omelet. This omelet comes with smoked salmon, which is a good source of omega-3s and selenium, and it also contains Portobello mushrooms and dill, which are known for their antioxidant properties. I usually bypass the Havarti cheese and opt for avocado. As a side, I order a bowl of blueberries and strawberries along with my must-have cup of black coffee. I appreciate that Deli Lane also offers a variety of dishes from their ‘Fit Life’ menu. Often, I become that annoying ‘fit guy’ that creates his own dish, and they’ve always been extremely accommodating to my request.” Deli Lane Cafe, 7230 SW 59th Ave., South Miami; 305.665.0606; delilane.com inDORAL MAGAZINE

Working Vacation BY BOB CURLEY

St. Lucia’s BodyHoliday is a working vacation for your body and your mind.

34

OCTOBER 2017

Nearly every resort in the Caribbean has the words “beach” or “spa” in its name. Not St. Lucia’s The BodyHoliday, even though it has both a gorgeous beach and one of the best spas we’ve ever seen. It’s not that the resort is overly modest—it just knows its priorities: making you feel better about yourself, inside and out. People talk about taking the “trip of a lifetime,” but a stay at The BodyHoliday can literally change your life, and how many resorts can legitimately say that? Honestly, you could make a typical Caribbean beach vacation out of a trip to this St. Lucia resort—the dining and drinks are also excellent—but that would be kind of missing the point. What makes the BodyHoliday special isn’t just that daily spa treatments are part of the resort’s all-inclusive package—although that’s pretty awesome— but that the resort offers an unmatched variety of wellness-enhancing programs, classes and services. A typical day’s schedule is packed with activities ranging from vinyasa yoga, tai chi and aqua fitness classes to skill-building archery, swimming, and sailing lessons. If sports are your preferred path to wellness, you can join

a volleyball game in or out of the pool, learn the fundamentals of cricket on the beach, or take part in a tennis tournament. The spectrum of activities is wide and varied, from the ease of a morning walk to nearby Pigeon Island, table tennis or a round of golf (also inclusive) to the challenge of a one- or 2.5-kilometer ocean swim, a 6.5K run to Cotton Bay, or the resort’s unique Quadrathalon—a four-stage adventure that includes a 10K mountain-bike ride, a 4K run, rappelling down a 100-foot cliff, and kayaking for 2.5K along the island’s north shore. You can take it all at your own pace, of course, but the BodyHoliday is the kind of place that makes you want to push your limits. And while you don’t need to be an athlete when you arrive, you’re likely to feel more like one by the time you leave. That’s especially true if you go down during one of the resort’s Wellfit Families programs, week-long programs offered at no extra cost and led by world-class athletes like future NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss and Olympic sprinters, swimmers and rowers. True to the overall BodyHoliday vibe, our week spent with Moss was less about fanboy moments than learning about fitness from someone who spent years keeping his body in peak physical condition— and is still finely toned as a 40-year-old retiree. The daily boot camp led by Moss was no day at the beach—entailing a mix of running through the sand, pushups, crunches and burpees— but the plunge into the surf at the end was exhilarating, and the week

also offered plenty of opportunity for one-on-one time with a sports legend, including pickup football and volleyball games and a hike to the top of Gros Piton, one of St. Lucia’s postcard peaks. Even if you’re not visiting with a world-class athlete, The BodyHoliday will keep you active with all kinds of excursions, including a weekly sunset cruise, Land Rover adventure tours and a chartered private sail onboard the resort’s new X-Treme 26 racing sailboats (take out two and race a friend!). The resort’s “equine journey” lets you work on your emotional health by communicating with horses and painting temporary messages on the sides of your steed for the day. If all this sounds a bit exhausting for a vacation, the resort’s spectacular spa stands poised upon a hilltop overlooking Cariblu Beach, ready to soothe your sore muscles and clear your cluttered mind. A dozen treatments are included in the price of your BodyHoliday stay, including two types of Swedish massage, facials, wraps, aromatherapy and a body rub designed especially for mothers-to-be. A true sanctuary, the Indian-inspired Wellness Centre has two floors of 33 treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, a fitness center and a separate Ayurvedic Temple arrayed around a sunny courtyard. Once you climb the stairs to the spa you’ll be tempted to linger for hours despite the temptation of the beach below—the Wellness Centre has the most comprehensive menu of services we’ve ever seen, and if you hang around for

Randy Moss

a while a therapist is likely to recruit you into trying something new, like the complementary bamboo massage we got on an outdoor table beside the pool one afternoon. If you’re really serious about making a BodyHoliday trip a life-changer, the resort’s BodyScience program takes pre-trip planning to a whole other level with a comprehensive health and wellness assessment that begins before you even leave home. Combining Eastern and Western philosophies, the program is supervised by the resort’s on-site medical staff and can be tailored to individual health needs, including stress-relief, physical fitness, digestive health and healthy aging. The BodyHoliday has an entire wing of singles rooms for travelers who want to make the journey to self-improvement a solo trip, with no extra supplement charged. While the resort’s facilities are widely spaced around 32 acres of tropical grounds, guestrooms are mainly concentrated in a single building stretching along the north side of the beach, with easy access to the ocean, pool and dining areas. Oceanfront rooms feature standalone soaking tubs surrounded by gossamer curtains that let in the light from spacious balconies with views out to the Caribbean and Pigeon Island, a St. Lucian national park. What you put into your body is also part of what you take out of a BodyHoliday vacation, and the resort makes it easy to support all that wellness work with healthy eating, including fruit and veggie smoothies at the beachfront deli, lots of grilled fish and locally sourced produce, and vegetarian entrées on every restaurant menu. Gluten-free, low-fat, lowcarb, diabetic and Ayurvedic menus can also be custom-designed for the length of your stay. That said, The BodyHoliday won’t hesitate to tempt you with indulgent desserts and a seven-course, wine-paired tasting menu at the Cariblue Windows restaurant: our savory nibbles of seared foie gras, sprinkled with sea salt and paired with a Tokaji dessert wine from Hungary, were pure heaven, but so were the refreshing (and far healthier) grilled watermelon and citrus kebabs served alongside a New Zealand sauvignon blanc from Tindall Vineyards—well worth the $85 upcharge for dinner. And when it’s time to celebrate all that you’ve accomplished during your stay, you can choose a special bottle from the resort’s wine salon, or salute yourself with something rummy and fruity at the beach bar. Because the BodyHoliday isn’t about denying pleasure; it’s taking joy in building a healthier, happier you.

What you put into your body is also part of what you take out of a BodyHoliday vacation, and the resort makes it easy to support all that wellness work with healthy eating.

REJUVENATION ON DEMAND The new Rejuvchip Doral Clinic, operated by Dr. Jabal Uffelman, specializes in anti-aging medicine. Its premier service is natural hormone replacement for men and women. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Rejuvchip Doral, opened a year ago and operated by gynecologist and wellness specialist Jabal Uffelman, M.D., focuses on cosmetic and anti-aging medicine. Its most popular therapy is Rejuvchip, a minimally invasive procedure for natural hormone replacement in both men and women. Born in South Florida, Dr. Uffelman is a graduate of the University of Florida School of Medicine. He did his residency at University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital. He and his staff are fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Rejuvchip Doral is located at 9582 Northwest 41st Street, Doral. For more information, call 786-563-0171 or visit Rejuvchip.com. A Fort Lauderdale office is located at 2000 South Andrews Avenue.

OF REJUVCHIP DORAL

What is the Rejuvchip procedure? As part of the normal aging process, our body’s hormonal function slowly declines. Restoring hormonal function naturally using the Rejuvchip procedure is a safe and effective way to reverse aging. The Rejuvchip procedure inserts natural testosterone pellets, which are bio-identical and are made using a botanical source. The testosterone from the pellets enters the body in its natural molecular form and therefore doesn’t disrupt normal physiology, as in the case of synthetic hormones. ¶ What are the specific benefits of testosterone therapy? Both men and women who use the Rejuvchip procedure enjoy an array of health benefits. The symptoms of low testosterone are universal, and they affect both men and women. Benefits of Rejuvchip therapy include increased mental and physical energy, improved libido and sexual satisfaction, a healthier physique and a better sense of well-being. Women, in addition, also benefit from relief of hot flashes and PMS, vaginal rejuvenation, increased bone density and improved sleep. ¶ How long does a chip last? For men, the benefits last for about six months. For women, it’s about four months. It’s up to the patients whether they choose to replace the chip and continue the therapy. Because of the benefits they get, more than 80 percent of both men and women choose to continue the therapy over an extended period of time.

ORTHOPEDIC VISIONARY

Fort Lauderdale’s Leone Center for Orthopedic Care has developed a national reputation as one of the most innovative and respected facilities in the U.S. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Dr. William A. Leone, Jr., founder and director of The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care at Holy Cross Hospital, is one of the world’s most acclaimed orthopedic surgeons. He is particularly celebrated for his ability to correct and improve the results of knee or hip replacement surgery from other doctors that has left patients unhappy or in chronic pain. He is a universally recognized expert in the most innovative orthopedic technologies. The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care is located at Holy Cross Hospital, 1000 NE 56th Street, Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954-489-4575 or visit HolyCrossLeoneCenter.com.

}

DIRECTOR OF THE LEONE CENTER FOR ORTHOPEDIC CARE

How does your practice differ from other orthopedic surgeons? We are more of a “destination practice.” For example, patients come to us after they have been to other orthopedic doctors, but did not get their problem solved. We are also known for providing the best of personalized care from a staff that is very attentive. We are very much an old-fashioned medical practice. And that’s what many patients are seeking today. ¶ In terms of the surgeries themselves, what sets you apart? What sets me apart is that I am so experienced and that I do so many surgeries. Because of that, surgeries that are often considered very complex have become routine for me. I also use the latest techniques and newest technologies available for hip and knee replacement surgeries. That means that rather than guess at things like angles and pressures, I’m actually measuring very precisely. For example, for knee replacement surgery, I use kinematic sensor technology to do a better job of ensuring the best results. ¶ What are the latest innovations in orthopedic surgery? They include, on the knee replacement side, taking devices like the kinematic sensors and using the data they provide to help understand why some people who have already had a knee replacement are not happy with the results. And then that data also provides a road map of what we need to do to fix the problem.

GASTRO HEALTH PHYSICIANS

Gastro Health is Florida’s largest physician group specializing in digestive health and is committed to top quality care and an exceptional healthcare experience. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Gastro Health, founded in 2006 by the merger of three long-running medical practices, is the largest operator of gastroenterology clinics in Florida, including 26 in South Florida. The company acquires and then manages existing practices and provides the infrastructure and support necessary for physicians to succeed in the current and ever-evolving healthcare environment. Consolidated ownership of clinics also increases the company’s ability to deliver high quality, value-based care. Gastro Health is headquartered at 9500 South Dadeland Boulevard, Suite 200, Miami. For more information, call 855-Gastro1 or visit GastroHealth.com.

CEO OF GASTRO HEALTH

How does Gastro Health position itself in the medical world? Gastro Health’s board certified physicians, allied professionals, nutritionists and administrative staff all seek to exceed our patient’s expectations. Our mission is to provide outstanding medical care and an exceptional healthcare experience. The experience aspect is particularly important because patients generally know when they have gotten good care, because they feel better. But the experience is also important because patients today are generally paying a higher portion of their healthcare costs, and they have more healthcare options. ¶ Why is Gastro Health growing so fast? The reality is that there are a lot of complexities in the business of healthcare, whether those are constraints from the government or from insurance companies. Historically, most physician’s offices started out as small enterprises, and the constraints are hard on them. So, in order for them to survive, they have to join with other physicians to share economies of scale and to expand their range of services. For example, we have both adult and pediatric gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, anesthesiologists and pharmacists all working together to provide care for the entire family. ¶ Why is that size and scope so important? Whether you’re a child, a young adult, or you’re age 50 and need a colonoscopy, or if you have any of the chronic diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, Gastro Health can address your needs. We provide excellent, ongoing care throughout every stage of your life.

PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGIST Dr. William I. Muinos of Gastro Health Pediatrics is a highly qualified, very experienced doctor who specializes in juvenile obesity and other common disorders. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Dr. William I. Muinos, M.D., FAAP, is a highly experienced pediatric gastroenterologist at Gastro Health Pediatrics. Gastro Health is the largest operator of gastroenterology clinics in Florida. Dr. Muinos is also director of the division of pediatric gastroenterology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He is double board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. He graduated from medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico in 1984. He did his residency at Miami Children’s Hospital and completed his fellowship training at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Dr. William I. }

GASTRO HEALTH PEDIATRICS

What sets you apart from other pediatric gastroenterologists? Gastro Health can deliver an entire spectrum of programs. For example, we have a weight management and obesity program. We also have a pediatric bariatric surgery arm, which has never existed in a broader single practice in South Florida before. The scope of capabilities that Gastro Health has also means we can provide specialized services like biliary duct procedures. The biliary ducts carry bile from the liver and gallbladder through the pancreas to the small intestine. ¶ What are the other advantages to patients of your affiliation with Gastro Health? In addition to offering a broader range of services in a single office, we can also deliver those services more efficiently because of the size of the company. That size and scope have also allowed us to expand the delivery of pediatric gastroenterology services to the community. For example, we can offer sub-specialties such as obesity therapy or hepatology. ¶ What do you specialize in? My passion is juvenile obesity. I did a TV show back in 2007 with Shaquille O’Neal, called Shaq’s Big Challenge. We put the kids through a nine-month program. Since then, my practice has ballooned, because childhood obesity is such a critical public health issue. And early intervention is the key to success.

Âś How do you treat children with cerebral palsy? We offer an intensive physical therapy program that uses the PediaSuit Protocol, which uses an orthotic device that is fitted to the child so he or she can learn movements and exercises that they have not been blessed to know how to do, such as sitting, crawling, standing and walking. The program requires four hours a day, five days a week, for four weeks. The program is conducted by licensed physical and occupational therapists. Âś What kinds of after-school programs do you offer? We offer after-school programs that are designed to promote generalization of skills. KEEPING UP WITH GROWTH

Fast-growing Palmetto General Hospital, which provides state-of-the-art care for heart attacks and strokes, has added a new clinical decision unit. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Opened in 1971 with just 50 beds, today Palmetto General Hospital boasts 368 beds and serves more than 130,000 patients per year. It has been awarded numerous times for the quality of its care and service. Palmetto General is one of just four hospitals in the state of Florida certified by The Joint Commission to operate as a comprehensive stroke center. It also offers a comprehensive cardiovascular surgery program. In September, the hospital debuted a new clinical decision unit (CDU). A CDU meets the needs of patients who require evaluation, testing, treatment and medical management for up to 48 hours. Palmetto General Hospital is located at 2001 West 68th Street, Hialeah. For more information, call 305-823-5000 or visit PalmettoGeneral.com.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF PALMETTO GENERAL HOSPITAL

Why have you opened a CDU? The hospital and our community have grown tremendously over the last decade. In order for us to meet current needs in our emergency room, we felt it was necessary to extend our capabilities. In order to expedite the care of patients coming to our emergency room for issues that are not as critical as a heart attack or stroke, it was essential for us to create a way to take pressure off of our ER, but also provide excellent, efficient care to those other patients. Âś What should the community understand about the importance of a CDU in a hospital? A CDU means that you can get the care you need, but you do not need to be admitted to the hospital. The CDU is adjacent to the emergency room, so every possible service you could need is available. But at the same time, you do not have to be in the same environment as much sicker patients, and you do not have to be admitted. Âś How will the new CDU benefit your emergency room? By having 31 additional beds in the CDU, we can move patients out of the emergency room more quickly. We no longer have to wait for a bed to become available in the hospital.

PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN AT BAPTIST HEALTH PRIMARY CARE

What services does Baptist Health Primary Care offer? The most important service is preventive medicine. That means a focus on catching diseases in their earliest stage, before they present any symptoms. The most important area of preventive medicine is cardiovascular disease. In practicing preventive cardiovascular medicine, we use physical examinations, medical histories, we test for cholesterol and lipid levels in the blood, blood pressure, and electrocardiograms (EKGs) if there is any reason to be concerned. Additionally, beginning at age 50, we refer men and women to a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. Âś What preventive medicine practices apply specifically to women? For women, the primary health concern is cancer. Therefore, we refer female patients to a gynecologist for pap smears, beginning at age 21. Mammograms are ordered starting at age 40. Since women are more prone to osteoporosis, we begin bone density testing when female patients turn 65 years of age. Âś What other important services do you offer? We provide diet and nutritional counseling, and exercise guidance. We treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as diabetes. We also provide nutritional counseling to pre-diabetic and diabetic patients in order to reduce their blood sugar levels. This is particularly important for pre-diabetic patients in order to prevent their progression to full diabetes.

THE

Mediterranean IS

calling

And it’s right around the corner at Panarea Sea Grill.

C

lose your eyes. Think back to your last vacation. Perhaps it was locals you met that told stories of the destination, or indigenous flavors that created the most enduring memories. If you yearn to replicate that feeling and are thinking about the warmth of the Mediterranean, its convivial conversation and authentic cuisine, make your way to Panarea Mediterranean Sea Grill on Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard. Intimate, cozy and worth the drive, this new restaurant is named after the second-smallest island of Italy’s Aeolian chain of picturesque volcanic islands. Notably famous for its large capers, the flavorful morsels are served as a welcome, perched on a glass of refreshing gazpacho to dinner guests every night. It’s a way for owner and trained sommelier Luca Delogu to welcome people into his “home” of 110 indoor seats, 15 of them outdoors on a beautifully lit garden patio and a charming, villa-like private room that seats 46 people (with its own audio-visual, in case you’re thinking of a good excuse for an off-site meeting). Delogu, who was born in Rome, grew up in the sea, diving for octopus and plucking sea urchin off the rocks in Sardinia. He nearly died diving for octopus when the tentacled creature wrapped itself around his neck and face mask, but a Sardinian cousin saved him with a quick maneuver. Yes, octopus is on the menu, no doubt recalling adventurous childhood pursuits. Delogu and Italian master

table hopping chef Claudio Sandri (who with 40 years of culinary experience beat Chef Morimoto in an Iron Chef rematch) spent months formulating the menu, which covers 15 of 20 Mediterranean countries from southern Spain to France, Italy, Turkey, Israel and Northern Africa. “We want to take diners on a journey that covers the true flavors of the diverse and vast coastlines of the Mediterranean,” says Delogu. The voyage on which Delogu and Chef Sandri lead guests is flavorful and reminiscent of a personal invitation into a local home, with rustic wood décor, framed art and hanging lights adding to the charming ambience. For dinner, it might be tempting to start with spreads like Greek Tzatziki or Egyptian Hummus, but we recommend going straight to Pejerreyes Fritos from Spain, little fried sand smelts that are considered “street food” in the country’s coastal towns and are served here with sage leaves and zucchini in a brown paper cone with grilled lemon. Then head to “Sea to be Sin” where seafood appetizers live, and try the Pulpo a la Valenciana (Spain), fresh grilled octopus served with potatoes, chick peas, mint, lemon and marinated olives, or the melt-inyour-mouth, not-to-be-missed Crudo di Branzino (Italy), a Mediterranean sea bass crudo served with radish-fennel salad and pops of crunchy pink peppercorns. Panarea is purportedly the only restaurant in Miami to make a spirulina pasta, which is original even for Italy and contains the healthy algae that is rich in beta-carotene and iron, and is simply served with

TOP: Pejerreyes Fritos from Spain. ABOVE: Grouper ravioli.

The voyage on which Delogu and Chef Sandri lead guests is flavorful and reminiscent of a personal invitation into a local home. fresh vegetables, tomatoes and olive oil to allow the spirulina flavor to shine through. Other noteworthy entrées include Ravioli Di Cernia (Italy), three large, housemade ravioli filled with fresh grouper and eggplant in a light, flavorful tomato sauce. Served on delicate floral plates from Spain, the presentation adds to the mood of being in the private home of a great local chef. From Morocco, Chef Sandri serves a hearty khroufe, an authentic lamb stew with a subtle mixture of apricots, chickpeas, potatoes, carrots, cinnamon and herbs. The authentic Pinsa Romana (Roman-style pizza) is a must to share and comes in myriad combinations, while the fresh fish (caught locally and flown in from the Mediterranean) can be served Italian- or Moroccan-style or simply with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. The dessert presentation is, in a word, charming, and comes as a treasure trove of individual postcards with authentic stamps, descriptions and wine pairings, and a “note” from the sender to the chef, as though Nonna were sharing her family recipe with the world. While they are all exquisite, our hands-down favorite was Moroccan Ma’ancha—meaning “snake”—made with rolled phyllo pastry and filled with dates, figs, walnuts and honey. The wine list deserves special attention and mention for its uncommon selection, as Delogu, who is both owner and sommelier, has scoured the Mediterranean to offer some of the most exceptional

under-the-radar boutique wines grown and bottled at the source, many available by the glass, and all presented on a colorful map, allowing guests to pinpoint their origins. “Our wine program is about originality,” explains Delogu. “We want to ensure that customers discover new gems and find a perfect match for their meal that will further enhance the flavor profiles from that region.” The wine is so extraordinary, we recommend ordering a different glass with each course. La Cattura, which we had with the grouperstuffed pasta, is made from the only Teroldego grape that grows in Tuscany and is blended with 15 percent Syrah. At $11 a glass, it is a steal for such a rare find, and this is reportedly the only Miami restaurant that offers it by the glass. The Grillo from Sardinia and Raboso Rosé from Venice are new to the Miami market; the Manto Negro only grows on Mallorca. A treat for any oenophile, 80 percent of Panarea’s wine selection is small-production and bio-organic. As if all this weren’t enough, grab a friend and learn how to make Chef Sandri’s house-made mozzarella the last Wednesday of every month. The convivial gathering is more than just cheese-making. It’s an evening with family. Panarea Mediterranean Sea Grill is located at 11052 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida 33161. For more information, call 305-640-5580 or visit panareaseagrill.com.

BMW 6-SERIES

Gran Coupe

V.

6-SERIES

Gran Turismo

BMW’s 6-Series takes on “Gran” new forms, and we’re here to sort out any Gran confusion. By Steve Siler

B

ack in my youth, BMW’s nomenclature made sense. There were three basic lines of sedans—denoted by numbers 3, 5, and 7—and a sexy, shark-nosed 6-Series coupe. Each car’s number series was followed by two additional numbers signifying the displacement of the engine. So a 525i, for example, was a mid-size 5-Series model powered by a 2.5-liter engine that was fuel injected (hence the “i” in 525i). Then the 2000s happened, and BMW assigned its various coupe models even number names like 2-series and 4-series, and its new SUV models “X” names that corresponded roughly to the car model with which it shared its platform components. Things started to get confusing when BMW’s four-door “Gran Coupes,” its so-called “Gran Turismo” 5-door hatchbacks, and fastback “coupe” versions of its SUVs came along right about the same time that BMW’s new turbocharged and hybrid powertrains rendered the two engine-size numbers irrelevant. Which leads us to today. The 6-Series two-door coupe is dead—long live the Six!—to be succeeded by a saucy new 8-Series coupe line in the future. For now, the 6-Series is still available as a convertible and as a four-door Gran Coupe, and also as a 5-door Gran Turismo hatchback, which is basically the successor to last year’s geeky 5-Series Gran Turismo. Lighter and sleeker than before, the new 6-Series Gran Turismo has almost nothing in common with the other Sixers, but it’s a fine car, whatever it’s called. After all, especially at BMW, what’s in a name?

70

OCTOBER 2017

2018 BMW 6-SERIES GRAN TURISMO

If you think of the 6-Series Gran Turismo as more or less a 5-Series hatchback and not a variant of the current 6-Series lineup, you’re spot on. That said, it’s no mere fastback version of the Five; it sits a bit higher and has a higher-pitched roof than that car, which results in a look that’s a bit controversial and, well, butt-heavy, but it’s certainly more attractive than last year’s 5-Series Gran Turismo, which was taller still. The payoff comes in the form of a very roomy rear seating area and a tremendous amount of cargo space behind its split folding rear seatbacks. Based as it is on the new 5-Series, not the previous model, it benefits from that car’s newfound premium-ness inside, which cannot be overstated. It also has lost a massive amount of weight—some 330 pounds—compared to its predecessor, benefitting handling, brake performance, and efficiency.

Wheel Life

For now, the only model we will get in the U.S. is the 640i Gran Turismo xDrive, powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 335 hp and a snappy eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, with all-wheel drive standard. Base prices start at a heady $70,695, which is nearly $11,950 more than a 540i xDrive sedan and $6500 over the outgoing 535i xDrive Gran Turismo.

2018 BMW 6-SERIES GRAN COUPE

The 6-Series Gran Coupe is essentially a 6-Series coupe—may it rest in peace—stretched into a slinky sedan body but which retains the coupe’s low-roof look, frameless door glass, and yes, snug rear seats. Under the skin, it’s little more than a comparably powered 5-Series sedan—the previous generation 5-Series model, that is. The 6-Series Gran Coupe has been out there beautifying our roads for a few years now, and it’ll probably remain with us for at least another year or two until BMW either renews its lease on life under the 6-Series moniker, or more likely, migrates the Gran Coupe models to the 8-Series family, adopting its saucier look and, yes, higher price point. For the U.S., the base model is the 640i, powered by a 315-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a snappy eight-speed transmission, with a 445-hp turbocharged V-8 available as an upgrade. If that’s not enough, BMW is happy to sell this car to you in M6 or Alpina B6 form, each with

up to 600 hp and performance envelopes bordering on the obscene. Pretty though they may be, the 6 Gran Coupes are as cramped inside and impractical as the Gran Turismo is roomy and practical. And at over $82K to start, they’re even more expensive.
