Everything is always happening so fast. The days, weeks and months go by in a blur, and Christmas seems to show up right after the Fourth of July. And though it may sound cliché, that’s why it really is important to stop and take a moment, chill out and breathe, whether it’s with a good book or magazine (like the one you’re holding now) or for an hour on a yoga mat. Whatever works best for you. When we stay hyper-focused on one thing (hello, work), we miss so many of the things that are going on around us, things—and people—that are of interest because they could make our lives richer, or they are doing things that are exciting and noteworthy. And they are all around us. In this issue of inWeston, we’ve spotlighted six of those people, all young and spirited, each with a passion that has driven them down the path to success. Meet them in “Ones to Watch” on page 60. And this time of year when we’re crazy-busier than ever trying to meet deadlines and prepare for the holidays, it’s nice to have a little help when it comes to figuring out what to get for family, friends and co-workers, particularly when there’s not a lot of time to ponder gift ideas. For that reason, as a follow-up to our November issue’s annual holiday gift guide, we’ve included a few last-minute suggestions to those of you who otherwise will inevitably be trolling the aisles of Walgreen’s on Christmas Eve, trying to choose between a box of Russell Stover chocolates and an electric blanket for your loved one. You’ll find those in “The Final Countdown” on page 72. Then there is the ultimate way to disconnect, rejuvenate and remind ourselves what a big, wonderful world we live in: by traveling. If you haven’t been, London is one of the most amazing, fulfilling cities on any continent. And a trip to the world’s most visited city is best optimized by a stay in one of the most storied and luxurious hotels anywhere: Claridge’s. If you don’t know firsthand, get an idea of just what a phenomenal experience this is in “Rarefied Air,” on page 92. There’s plenty more in between, too—so step away from your desk and settle into a comfy seat. Before you know it, you’ll be buying Halloween candy again.

On the Case The Rick Case Bikes for Kids program returns for the 33rd year to provide bicycles for the underprivileged. Now in its 33rd year, the Rick Case Bikes for Kids program is back to provide thousands of needy kids with bicycles during the holidays, and they’re currently collecting donated bikes through December 20. Launched in 1982 by Rick Case Automotive Group’s Rick and Rita Case, since its inception the program has been responsible for giving out more than 100,000 bikes over the years in South Florida, Cleveland and Atlanta. Bikes in good condition are being accepted at seven Rick Case locations in Davie, Weston and Fort Lauderdale; for specific locations, call 954.377.7410 or visit rickcase.com.

INVEST IN A CAUSE Ensure that your charitable donations keep on giving— even after you’re gone.

South Florida sees a lot of philanthropic activity. “As wealth has grown here, the activity has increased,” says Tony Baumer, head of Miami JP Morgan Private Bank. “But today’s wealthy families want to make a lasting impact, not just write a check.” And today they are able to do that by setting up donoradvised funds, or organizations that allow them to give by investing, take tax deductions for those donations and distribute the dollars over a number of years, even involving the donor’s families. “They can include their

sons and daughters by placing them in charge of foundations they set up,” Baumer says, adding, “People don’t just want to give money away anymore; they want to make sure it will last and grow. They want their children to learn about the cause and about giving. There’s a strong degree of getting the next generation involved.” And staying on top of the details. For example, Jacqueline Elias, senior philanthropic advisor at JP Morgan Private Bank’s Philanthropy Centre, elaborates, “Someone interested

in children’s health issues may not just give to clinics, but also look at ways the pharmaceutical industry can focus on cures and drugs, so they’re using their investment and philanthropic dollars to fund early-stage research—they’re looking at the whole spectrum and utilizing their resources for social change.’” In the end, those who not only invest in a cause but also remain connected at the grassroots level are interested in making a social impact as well as funding a cause—and keeping their legacies alive while doing it.

A WINNING FORMULA PAL ACADEMY PAIRS THERAPY AND EDUCATION TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer Following a number of successful years running a clinic forr children with special needs and learning difficulties, Patricia cia A. LaBella & Associates decided to take the next step and open an academy where patients could not only be treated therapeutically, but also continue their education, all underr the same roof. “At PAL Academy, our therapists are on staff fullltime, so our students benefit from therapy sessions during the school day, which allows them to be more successful,” explains academy director Elizabeth Zayas. “Plus, we make sure there’s a strong connection between home and school. It’s truly a team effort to help our students be successful and I’m pleased to say that our parents are incredibly involved.” Currently, PAL is treating children from ages 2 1/2 to 19 and classes max out at five or six students. “Our students need the clinical aspect of care we offer, in addition to smaller classroom sizes and more one-on-one attention. But we don’t treat any of them differently,” asserts Zayas. “Whether they are on the [autism] spectrum, have Down syndrome, difficulties with reading or social interaction, or are completely non-verbal, we talk to each of them as though they were like any other child. It’s important for them to understand they are no different than anyone else and feel accepted and included at the academy.”

Q&A with Elizabeth Zayas, Director of PAL Academy and Clinic

Q:1 What’s your background and how did you come to join the team at PAL? “I always knew I wanted to teach and when I started in a pre-school class, somehow all of the undiagnosed children ended up in my classroom. At the time, I didn’t know what that meant, but I quickly educated myself in the best ways to help them succeed. After that, I worked for a family with autistic twins. I was their personal care assistant and shadowed them everywhere—at school and camp, in the house, wherever they went. This helped me learn all the moving parts of a child with special needs. Patty [LaBella] found me working at a different program and the rest is history. We’re a great team. She is certainly the brains and leader of the operation, and I stay behind the scenes, linking the school and the clinic together.”

Q:3

Tell me about your partnership with the Residence Inn in Weston.

Besides education and therapy, what other programs does PAL offer?

“Once a week, we bring the kids there to work on ADL skills— activities of daily living—with a therapist. They practice making beds, folding clothes they brought from home, and using washers and dryers. Chris Powers, the general manager at the hotel, has been incredible. He has really gone above and beyond for our children, even allowing us to use the basketball court. We’re so grateful for such an excellent partnership.”

“In addition to the Academy, our staff therapists provide speech, behavioral and occupational therapy. We also offer a movement yoga program led by our in-house yoga instructor who has a psychology background and has worked with special needs children. And we have a sports program, too. We work on each URQTVtƂTUV ƃCI HQQVDCNN CPF PQY we are doing soccer—for six weeks. It gives the children an opportunity to try something new without boundaries and the fear of bullying, and they really enjoy it. The program is open to children in the community and we have been getting more and more inquiries about it.” PAL Clinic, 2685 Executive Park Dr., Ste. 5, Weston, 954.372.9710; palclinic.com.

Dr. Iris Silverberg joined the Dan Marino Outpatient Center at Miami Children’s Hospital a little less than two years ago. “I was very excited when they invited me to join the practice,” she says. “With so many varied specialists on staff, it allows for a continuity of care. Plus, when I have patients that require the care of a specialist, we can all work together. I’m constantly amazed at the specialists that come through the Center,” she adds. “We’ve recently added a pediatric rheumatologist, an allergist, and an endocrinologist.” Another bonus offered to patients at the Dan Marino Center is Saturday hours. “Our team of pediatricians rotate schedules to accommodate family-friendly weekend visits,” explains Dr. Silverberg. “We offer Saturday appointments twice a month so working parents can accompany their children to appointments. Plus, we understand that kids are usually so busy with school and extracurricular activities that it really benefits the entire family.” Even after 10 years in the business, Dr. Silverberg remains passionate about her work. “There’s so much variety on a day-to-day bases of the cases I treat, and I enjoy getting to know my patients. I feel fortunate that I have the opportunity to practice ‘old-fashioned pediatrics,’ where I can take my time with patients and truly understand their questions and concerns.”

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

ACTING AS MORE THAN JUST A LANDLORD, JOEY BELMONT CONTINUES HIS FATHER’S LEGACY AT WESTON LEASING.

JOEY BELMONT

By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Upon graduating from Cornell Barry Belmont bought his ďŹ rst piece of property in 1989 out of an ad in the Wall Street Journal. It just so happened to be at Weston’s Bonaventure Town Center Shops. “Even though my father was originally in law, at that point he started to focus on real estate full time,â€? says Joey Belmont, director of leasing at Weston Leasing. “He was an incredibly hands-on operator who worked very closely with his tenants, acting more like a business partner than simply a landlord. From the beginning, he had a great reputation, which he upheld over the years, and now it’s my turn to make sure that continues.â€? Tenants of the Belmonts speak highly of both Joey and his father and praise them for their support and business acumen. “We don’t have any partners, so we understand ďŹ rsthand what it’s like to be in business for yourself,â€? explains Joey. “We know our tenants are putting their lives on the line with their businesses, just as we have with ours.â€? Belmont praises his team, speciďŹ cally Jose Torres, his property manager, for helping continue their winning reputation. “He is fantastic at ushering in new tenants and helping us review their business and architectural plans to look for ways that we might be able to save them some money.â€? In addition to his hardworking team, Belmont credits his continued success in large part to the company’s business philosophy. “We speciďŹ cally target clients we believe in. If it’s a start-up, we often work with them to help them develop their concept. There’s a lot of things business owners overlook in the midst of being so focused on getting their doors open, but it’s the nittygritty that can make or break a business.â€? He was heading out West to get into the acting and screenwriting business with his friends, but fate stepped in and brought him to 5QWVJ (NQTKFCtOQTG URGEKĆ‚ECNN[ Weston—where he would join his father’s leasing company. “At the time, the real estate business wasn’t jamming, so it was a great opportunity to learn about the business and what I could do not only to help improve the business, but sustain it,â€? he says. $GNOQPV MPQYU KV YCU VTKCN D[ Ć‚TG and admits that early on, his father continued to be involved in large decisions, coming down for a week or so every month. “Since then, my

More Than Mulch FOR A BETTER BACKYARD, BRING IN THE PROS. Sure, your friends and family to the north may be getting walloped with a wintry mix, but here in South Florida, there’s no better time to enjoy the winter weather poolside or from your very own hot tub. Whether your backyard leaves something to be desired or you’re looking to add some razzle-dazzle, give your better half a break and bring in the pros. The team at Luxury Outdoor Design does this for a living. You name it; they’ll make it, from custom pools with grottoes, waterfalls and infinity edges to complete outdoor kitchens that will make you the hostess with the mostest. And it doesn’t end there. Leave the landscaping to them, too, and with custom trellises, gazebos, fire pits and thatched-roof huts, you’ll be left wondering where that pool boy went—or not caring. The Depp of his Appeal At 50, Johnny Depp’s boyish good looks and Õ L i V >À >Ài wÀ Þ Ì>VÌ] > ` `ië Ìi his aversion to the evils of fame, he promises there’s more to look forward to. E ROSE TO PROMINENCE WHEN the 1980s television series 21 Jump Street launched him as a teen idol. But that wasn’t what one would call the “start” to his career, because to say it was a start would imply there is an end—and Johnny Depp, regarded by many as one of the world’s biggest movie stars, is one of those leading men whose star you just know is going to be burning brightly until the end of his days. Nearly 30 years ago, we saw him in a minor supporting role as a translator in Oliver Stone’s Platoon, mostly because many of the scenes he had filmed with the film’s star, Willem Dafoe, were cut from the finished movie. Four years later, he seemed to hit his niche playing quirky characters, like the lead role in Edward Scissorhands. A string of box office successes followed from the late 90s to the present— Sleepy Hollow, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland—with Depp collaborating on eight of those films with his friend, the director Tim Burton; their ninth, Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, is scheduled for 2016. Films featuring Depp have grossed over 52

inWESTON MAGAZINE

$3.1 billion at the United States box office and over $7.6 billion worldwide (the Pirates of the Caribbean films alone have grossed $3 billion). All this talent has won him legions of fans the world over; but it also hasn’t gone unrecognized by industry peers. Depp has been nominated for three Best Actor Oscars, and he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He also has garnered a sex symbol status in American cinema, being twice named as the “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine, in 2003 and 2009. Just before his film The Lone Ranger came out in 2013, Forbes listed him as the seventh-highest paid actor at $30 million per film. As we went to press with this issue, six months had passed since the release of Depp’s sci-fi thriller Transcendence, and he had been engaged for six months to 27-year-old actress Amber Heard (Depp turned 50 this year). In a chat with Savannah Guthrie on the TODAY show, he responded to a question about his fiancée being pregnant with, “What do you think I am, a savage? It’s not a shotgun affair.”

While Depp is known for his reclusive nature, he’s always had “rock star ambitions,” which started in a garage band right here in Miramar.

inWESTON MAGAZINE

Those people that buy the tickets are the people that I consider my boss.

Up next for Depp is Mortdecai, a crime comedy set for release on January 23, where he’ll play the title character of Charlie Mortdecai.

Having to answer those sorts of personal questions is one of the reasons Depp has repeatedly stressed how off-putting he finds fame, which he likens to “a little bit like living like a fugitive. Everything has to be some sort of strategy. To get you into the hotel, to get you out of the hotel, to get you into the restaurant, to get you out of the restaurant.” Not that he doesn’t appreciate what it’s brought him. He’s “honored” to have fans and said he’ll always be there for them, “because those people that buy the tickets are the people that I consider my boss.” But, he admitted, if he could do what he does minus the fame, he would definitely take that option. “Easily,” he said. Fame seems to have been his destiny, though. Even as a kid, he had “rock star ambitions” tied up in his desire to create art. That’s why he played in a garage band back in the days he was growing up in Miramar, right here in South Florida; at that time, he dreamed of working with the likes of then-superstars Alice Cooper and Willie Nelson. He still plays his guitar, but just because he loves to, just as he enjoys reading books. (He’s also a fan of Honey Boo Boo, along with other reality shows widely considered to be some of the “trashiest television imaginable”, he told Rolling Stone magazine last year). It’s no surprise that some of his best buds include musicians, like Keith Richards and Bob Dylan, and literary types, like the late Hunter S. Thompson. (Depp is actually working on a documentary about the Stones guitarist’s life and music, and Richards played his dad in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.) But today he is an actor, although arguably, he is also a rock star when it comes to his craft. Despite his leading-man good looks—that mop of dark hair, cheekbones so sharp they look like they could cut glass, heartshaped, full lips that many women pay good money trying to achieve—Depp has always chosen the risky roles, and ones that are among some of the most interesting in Hollywood. For this spring’s Transcendence, it was as a scientist whose brain is uploaded

to a computer after he’s injured. There was no crazy makeup or weird prostheses involved, as in so many of his part films. And even though he played a scientist in the film, Depp told the TODAY show that in real life, the advances of technology escape his grasp. “Technologically, I’m a complete and utter oaf,” he said. “A grown man, you know, attempting to send an important message with these thumbs? You know, it’s truly given meaning to the expression, ‘I’m all thumbs.’” He needn’t concern himself with tech-savviness for his next role, in the crime comedy Mortdecai, set for release on January 23. The film, which is directed by David Koepp and described in Variety as “the story of a hapless art dealer entangled in larceny on a globetrotting scale,” costars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn and Aubrey Plaza, and sees Depp—who plays the title character, Charlie Mortdecai—back in quirky character again, handlebar mustache and all; he plays an art dealer who must juggle “some angry Russians, the British MI5, his wife and an international terrorist” as he runs around the world trying to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. Sounds zany, natch—that’s Depp’s stock in trade. And the way he plays it, one would think he never tires of it. Still, he told Rolling Stone, thoughts of retirement pop up every day, though he added, “I think while I’ve got the opportunity and the desire and the creative spark to do the things that I can do right now, I should do them. And then, at a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life. Really living life. And going somewhere where you don’t have to be on the run, or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel. At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realize that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive.”

BOYS CLUB, BE GONE

Meredith Lasher President and CEO, Bombshell Productions Over-the-top productions are nothing new for Meredith Lasher, who grew up performing in South Florida. “I first set foot on a stage when I was 5 years old and I knew at that moment that’s where I would be the happiest,” she says. “I jumped around a bit, doing my own shows, working as a costume designer, and eventually becoming a producer.” Upon deciding to leave her former job, where she started its event production branch, Lasher had a long talk with her father, who told her, in no uncertain terms, that it was time to start her own company. With no financial backing and a handful of people dismissing her as an event planner, she leased a 4,000-square-foot space in Fort Lauderdale. “It was such a huge undertaking and I didn’t know what I was going to do with all that space, but I’m thrilled to say not only are we still here, but we have quickly outgrown it.” Three years, Lasher has a roster of clients that include Fendi, Harry Winston, Hermès and Mercedes-Benz. And 2015 will bring high-profile collaborations with a number of liquor brands, including Cointreau, Beluga vodka and Moet Ice. But first comes Design Miami/, where Lasher is working on the mammoth booth for architect Peter Marino, the recipient of this year’s Design Visionary award. “It’s the pinnacle,” she says, “The level of aesthetics and artfulness in the environment is ideal.”

BEAM ME UP

Daren Stabinski CEO of Tenderbox, LLC Imagine cancelling your cable service. Imagine access to more than 140 live television stations from around the world. Imagine searching for videos on the Internet and then having the ability to stream those videos directly to your television, all without the worry of viruses and pop-ups infecting your system and slowing you down. That’s exactly what Westonites Daren Stabinski and Patrick Zuili have created with YouBeam, a device small enough to fit in your hand and the corresponding cable service that goes along with it. “We like to promote ourselves as a cable-cutting service. We’re not simply selling a device, like we’ve seen with Apple TV or Roku, which then require subscriptions to services like Netflix or Hulu. Once you become a subscriber, the device is free, and that’s all you need. We’re truly a one-stop-shop.” With no contracts, excellent parental control, interactive social features, up to 1080p HD service, and an independent search engine and a browser that avoids slow, virus-ridden sites, YouBeam is out to change the way people watch TV. Despite the fact that the product only launched a few months ago, it’s already available on Amazon and eBay, along with New Egg, the largest online computer retailer. “It’s incredibly rewarding to release something into the world that will actually affect people’s lives,” says Stabinski. “I’ve always been a techie, ever since I was a little kid, and now I’m creating technology.”

BOTTOMS UP

Ryan and KC Sentz Founders, Funky Buddha Brewery Ryan and KC Sentz are living the dream. Behind the spacious taproom where crowds of craft-beer-loving fans flock, the brothers Sentz are brewing 900 gallons of beer at a time, and that’s just one batch. “We usually do two batches a day,” says Ryan, “and that doesn’t include our small test batches that still get made in our original Boca location.” While it may seem like theirs has been an overnight success, the Sentzes have actually been tinkering away for quite some time. “I opened a hookah bar seven years ago in Boca,” says Ryan. “I’ve always been a fan of craft beer and had been home brewing for some time, so I knew I wanted to include that in the concept.

When we outgrew our original space, we found a home in Oakland Park and began brewing on a small scale. Soon enough, we were getting national press.” And that was just the beginning. The brothers have tapped into the growing popularity of local and craft beers and the legions of fans who love them. Their Maple Bacon Coffee Porter made its way around the world, eventually becoming the No. 1 porter in the world. “Believe it or not, that was introduced on a 30-gallon system,” says KC. “We had 4,000 people show up to the inaugural release party. We never expected such success, but now we’re constantly thinking about the next step.” DEC 2014 /JAN 2015

ON HER OWN TERMS

Lais Pontes Founder and President, The Pontes Group Lais Pontes has never set foot in an agency. And yet, she just happens to be running one of the most successful agencies in South Florida. “From the beginning, I always said I wanted to be the anti-agency agency,” she says. “I don’t want to just work for my clients. I want longterm partnerships.” Following that philosophy, she has garnered a boatload of national press for her clients, ranging from established events like Clearwater Beach Uncorked, the city’s wine and food festival, to Headbands of Hope, a company that was launched a little more than two years ago. When asked about her success, Pontes admits, “It’s been a lot of 20-hour days, but I know this is what I was born to do. I figured I could either build my own dream or continue working on someone else’s. It was a clear choice.” Pontes started her company out of a spare bedroom in her home. Since launching two years ago, she now has offices in both Lighthouse Point and Los Angeles. “You have to take big risks to do big things,” she asserts. “I know I’ve taken a nontraditional path, but I’ve always danced to the beat of my own drum. I never took a loan. I’ve never had a partner, just the blessing of generous clients and editors and that took a chance on me and let me be me.”

A PERFECT CIRCLE

Henri Crockett Founder and Executive Director, The Crockett Foundation

Growing up in Pompano Beach, Henri Crockett, a retired NFL star who played for both the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings, yearned for a mentor following the loss of his father. He was lucky enough to cross paths with Dr. Daniel Kanell, an orthopedic surgeon with Broward Health and the team physician for the Miami Marlins as well as a number of other major league sports teams in South Florida. “He took me in like I was just another one of his kids,” he recollects. “I’ll never forget his kindness and guidance.” The Crockett Foundation, the non-profit Crockett started with his brother, Zach, which is committed to improving children’s quality of life by building strong community ties, is his way of paying it forward. “Broward and Miami-Dade counties have the highest dropout rate in the

country among middle school kids,” he laments. “It’s my mission to fix this. I want these kids to dream big and know they can achieve anything they want, but you have to show them what it takes. You have to give them ownership and make them accountable.” The Crockett Foundation currently operates three different after-school programs that include tutoring and mentorship, as well as a health and activity component. The School is Cool program pairs students who have behavior and attendance problems with those who are succeeding. “Kids are, by nature, competitive, so they want to do as well as their peers. Plus, they know my story; they’ve seen I come from a similar situation and have found success. To buy in, they’ve got to believe, and we help them do that.”

T’S CASUALLY ELEGANT, CLASSY AND RICH in design. Created with stacked stones and other natural materials, the design of this oceanfront penthouse on the 27th floor of Point of Americas condominium in Fort Lauderdale has made its owners very happy. They hired a company to collapse the wall and merge two existing apartments, creating a 2,500-square-foot living space containing two bedrooms, two and a half baths and views that are to die for. Before the couple’s eyes, a new waterfront lifestyle unfolded amid a paradise of golden sandcastles.

—MICHAEL BLUM

This stunning Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired space is as ideal for parties as it is for relaxing. The three cobalt-blue pendants are from Baccarat and complement the recessed lighting. The cabinets are all custom built.

Yet when Boca Raton interior designer Michael Blum was commissioned to create the interiors for this Chicago couple, he found himself facing some technical challenges. So he studied the plans, talked to some experts and let the ideas roll. It didn’t take long for Blum to learn that there was nothing he couldn’t overcome. After wrangling with work permits, he completed the project in about one year. The retired couple, who now live in Fort Lauderdale year-round, asked Blum to use the restaurant Seasons 52 for design inspiration. “They wanted a ranch house in the sky inspired by the sleek look of the restaurant,” explains Blum. “They dine out a lot and really like its decor.” The restaurant’s exterior is made of sedimentary stone; inside it’s glam, dark and designed with natural materials in shades of mahogany and caramel. With touches of Frank Lloyd Wright’s genius of designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, the feeling is warm and festive with a huge social space/bar. So why not translate aspects of this design into a residence? Blum decided to use Sapele mahogany wood veneer throughout the entire residence to evoke the feeling of richness and movement. He also selected a beige polished marble called Crema to create a neutral marble floor. “We wanted continuous flooring with classic marble, so we used area rugs to define

the spaces and separate the rooms,” says Blum. While the clients don’t do a great deal of cooking at home, entertaining is a passion. And they wanted to be sure the space always looks polished, structured and elegant. Since this was a firsttime collaboration between Blum and the couple, the designer had the opportunity to show them new ideas. His mind was swirling with concepts for such a magnificent waterfront space. For example, in an effort to add dazzle to the dining room, he introduced them to unique pendant chandeliers. “I wanted some sparkle in that space, so I suggested Baccarat,” says Blum. “At first they were skeptical because they were not familiar with the look. But I talked them into it, and now they love everything about it.” Similarly, in the foyer, Blum used elegant Lalique crystal fixtures, which the couple studied, asked about, and then ultimately “flipped over.”

The contrast of the splashy colors in the contemporary art works well with the wonderful view of the water. The owners and guests can enjoy the beauty of the seaside Fort Lauderdale location from various rooms.

Most of the problems Blum encountered in the penthouse’s design pertained to the creation of the fireplace area, a dominant feature of the living room. So he hired some helpers to work their magic. They created a vignette with motorized art above the fireplace as a way to hide the television. This took some clever maneuvering, but the end result was cool, like a scene out of a spy thriller. “The clients weren’t sure how to install and hide the TV, but with the push of a button—James Bond-style—we worked it out,” says the designer. “A splashy contemporary canvas camouflages the TV until the couple wants to see it.” The fireplace is warm and inviting, with a mahogany mantel and Black Galaxy granite from India with copper

leaf trim. “The views from this space are just gorgeous,” says Blum. “The clients have floor-to-ceiling windows and a huge balcony from which to enjoy the scene.” To create even more visual impact, Blum customized the cabinets, furniture, stone pillars and lighting. The public areas of the penthouse are spare and elegant and come alive in a special way, as do the custom master bedroom and bath. With architectural paneling in mahogany, modern lighting and a cool blue square panel headboard, the room is hushed and beautiful. The master bath is sleek and spa-like, appointed in the same custom mahogany with Black Galaxy countertops to match the fireplace trim. With overhead lighting, chrome sconces and double sinks, the Seasons 52 inspiration is present,

but not overdone. Even the powder room has a vessel sink and custom fixtures and cabinetry so “guests get a good impression” of the home. Despite Blum’s initial challenge to make the space come alive, the overall experience became a dream project. He customized everything from the cabinets, lighting and furniture to the smallest details throughout the residence. “We wanted to make a dramatic design statement,” says Blum. “I don’t get too many projects like this. I was so happy to work on it and see the final result...especially when I learned how much the couple loved what they saw.”

As far back as April 1966, Time magazine dedicated an entire issue to “London: the Swinging City,” in which writer Piri Halasz wrote, “Ancient elegance and new opulence are all tangled up in a dazzling blur of op and pop.” Nearly 50 years later, it’s an observation that anyone who has spent time exploring the city will agree is spot on. Then, as recently as two years ago, CNN Travel posted an article entitled “50 Reasons London is the World’s Greatest City,” citing many we already know—edgy fashion, ubiquitous sausage, its international flavor (300 languages spoken in the capital!), Sunday roasts—in addition to a few that even the most schooled Anglophile may not be aware of, such as a cocktail called The Flintlock, a concoction consisting of gin and gunpowder tincture. Speaking from experience, there’s also the hustle and bustle of Oxford Circus, the wonderful abundance of markets, the awe-inspiring historical aspect… the list goes on. But one of my newest reasons to love London, I discovered on my most recent visit this past summer, is the very hotel in which I stayed. And deciding which section of this vast metropolis to stay in when you’re planning a trip can be daunting, because thousands of appealing-looking hotels are spread throughout its 607 square miles. London is historical, yet modern, and each of the various sections reflects this in some way or another. It doesn’t really matter what your personal interests are; it behooves you to take the time to visit as many of the city’s neighborhoods as you possibly can. From the West End, considered the heart of the city and the location of the Theatre District and the Times Square-like Piccadilly Circus, to hipsters’ paradise Soho and Covent Garden; from the

South Bank, home to the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and St. Paul’s Cathedral, to smaller neighborhoods like Notting Hill, South Kensington, Hyde Park and Chelsea, to name a few, there is a confounding array of options to consider. And I’ve never been more certain that I made the best decision than after I chose to spend my most recent week in London at Claridge’s, in the heart of Mayfair in Central London. This 5-star hotel at the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street, whose long-standing connections with royalty have led to it being referred to as an “annex to Buckingham Palace,” is the epitome of meticulous elegance and service, the standard of which it is difficult to find in any city or country in the hospitality industry these days. Originally founded in 1812 as Mivart’s Hotel, it was sold in 1854 by its founder—the father of biologist St. George Jackson Mivart—to William and Marianne Claridge, who owned a smaller hotel next door. They combined the two operations, and after a period of being called “Mivart’s at Claridge’s”, they simplified to the current name. Claridge’s has hosted heads of state, international moguls, Hollywood royalty—from legends such as Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn and Alfred Hitchcock to modern-day A-listers Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway and Victoria Beckham—and discriminating travelers without marquee names who just find its caliber of accommodations and service to be unrivaled and worth the pretty penny it costs to stay there. Like the hotel itself, its location is perfection, just a short walk to the London underground, Regent Street shopping, local pubs and a number of major tourist attractions. Everything about Claridge’s, from the moment you step out of the vehicle that transports you to its revolving front door—manned by the dapper doorman decked out in top hat and tails—to the time you emerge from the elevator (and by the way, Claridge’s has the distinction of having the last manned “lift” in Europe,

THE BLUE BAR AT THE BERKELEY

Mayfair Ladies IN ADDITION TO CLARIDGE’S, THERE ARE TWO MORE LOVELY LONDON HOTELS UNDER THE MAYBOURNE GROUP’S UMBRELLA: THE BERKELEY AND THE CONNAUGHT. You may need to make three separate trips to London to experience the best it has to offer in hotels, or at the very least, book a couple of nights at each of the three owned by the Maybourne Hotel Group. The Berkeley was at one time named the Gloucester coffee house, as it was the base for drivers of mall coaches traveling to the West Country. It later expanded to become a hotel for travelers who were using the mail coach services to travel to and from London. Since 1972, it’s been in a new building in Knightsbridge and is home to the city’s only rooftop swimming pool. complete with velvet-covered sofa inside) and cross the threshold of your guestroom (or, should you be so fortunate, your suite), bespeaks the grandeur that one associates with a palace, but without the stuffy air we imagine a palace would contain (at least, in the presence of certain royals). The décor is primarily Art Deco, with plush, inviting beds and conveniences of every sort. In the suites, flatscreens are present in the living areas, the bedroom and even the bathroom, so you can soak in the tub and take in the latest news from the BBC or anything else you choose. Beds are dressed in Pratesi linens, and in case the oversized pillows aren’t exactly right for you, a pillow menu offers a dozen other options (including a V-shaped one for back support as well as a contour pillow for your legs). As for the suites, there are six “normal” suites to choose from, and then there are the Signature Suites; three of those include the 2-bedroom Grand Piano Suite designed by fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg, the Prince Alexander Suite decorated with a musical theme and which includes sheet music for those guests who may want to tickle the ivories of the grand piano, and the Royal Suite, with a dining room that accommodates ten guests and is set apart from the rest of the space by magnificent double doors. And about the bathrooms: Gleaming marble abounds, but the little touches, such as heated towel racks, Bamford toiletries and white Frette bathrobes make it a room that invites lingering long after you’re finished conducting the business at hand.

There’s a practical element at work here as well— the closets contain umbrellas for those inevitable rainy London days—but then the luxury is part of this, too, as the provided rain trenches hanging in the closets for your convenience are courtesy of Burberry. Because the hotel is centrally located in a posh shopping neighborhood, with Aspinal of London and Jo Malone just a couple of doors down, a lovely shopping tote is also provided for your use. If you’d rather not venture out much, you needn’t. Off the hotel foyer is the Map Room, where you can tuck into a book or a newspaper (imagine!) amid the red velvet walls. The Fumoir cocktail bar—which, despite its name, no longer sells cigars following the city’s smoking ban—dates back to 1929, though it was renovated in the 90s, and is a relaxing spot for enjoying one of the specialty drinks prepared by the affable house mixologist. Even the Foyer, with its massive Chihuly chandelier and inviting seating vignettes, beckons one to sit and take in the surrounding goings-on—or just the surroundings. For 12 years, the main fine-dining restaurant at Claridge’s was run by Gordon Ramsay, but after the famously temperamental chef couldn’t work out contract negotiations with the hotel in 2013, it closed. No doubt, British dining patrons aren’t pining for him, for a number of reasons, but speaking purely gastronomically, that’s because they now have Simon Rogan in their midst. At Fera at Claridge’s, Rogan—who made his name in 2002 with L’Enclume, his 2-Michelin starred restaurant, by masterminding a menu utilizing produce, chickens, sheep, cattle and bees raised on his very own farm—shows with each plate why he was named Chef of the Year and Restaurateur of the Year at the 2013 Catey Awards, a UK ceremony that’s widely considered the Oscars of the hospitality industry. (Tip: If you hope to add this to

your list of magnificent experiences, reserve your table well in advance.) And on the subject of sublime culinary adventures, it would be criminal to stay at Claridge’s and not take afternoon tea. There are teas all over the fine city of London, but this one sets the gold standard, and why wouldn’t it? They’ve been at it for 150 years. (Again: make a reservation in advance.) The hotel’s resident tea connoisseur, Henrietta Lovell, brings in teas from all over the world, then, together with executive chef Martyn Nail, orchestrates a symphony of sumptuous finger sandwiches, warm scones and sublime pastries that are baked daily on site— accompanied by tiny pots of Cornish clotted cream and Marco Polo gelée—that could very well cause your eyes to roll back in your head. Eight different seating times are available, 15 minutes apart between 2:45 pm and 5:30 pm daily, and the price is £50, or approximately $80 US, per person. But for as regal and majestic and formal as Claridge’s may be, it is all at once comfortable, warm and welcoming. The concierge, the doormen, and the entire staff, from the servers at breakfast to the housekeeping staff to the butlers that tend to your every whim, are not only friendly, they seem to have been schooled in mastering the art of respecting you as a guest of the hotel and getting to know who you are, where you’re from, and what you seek from your stay at this magical place—and they set about making sure you get it.

ABOVE: Afternoon tea is as visually enticing as it is appetizing, a true experience. LEFT: Suites come with the advantage of a private butler, such as the jovial Stephen, who presented lemon cakes, scones and other freshbaked delights when we ordered afternoon tea in our room.

Clearwater

Revival

BONNIE CLEARWATER HAS BROUGHT HER MIDAS TOUCH TO THE MUSEUM OF ART FORT LAUDERDALE—AND WITH IT, ART LOVERS IN THE MAKING FROM ALL OVER THE TRI-COUNTY AREA. After 18 years as the executive director and chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami, last year Bonnie Clearwater embarked on a new professional adventure. The Queen Midas of the arts world migrated north to Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale—and things haven’t been the same since. That’s a great thing for Fort Lauderdale. Even though it’s less than 30 miles away, the city is a different world from Miami, something Clearwater observed immediately upon arriving at her new post; she definitely had to adjust. While Miami tends to be broken up into areas by activity, Fort Lauderdale is a one-stop destination for living, work, play, and, she notes, the arts. Like the pro she is, Clearwater embraced the differences and set to work immediately achieving her main mission: galvanizing and unifying the art communities of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Another objective: to increase the museum’s regional, national and

102

inWESTON MAGAZINE

international presence—and Clearwater can check that off her list, too: in August, the New York Times published a glowing front-page review of the William Glackens retrospective (“This show reveals an inveterate Francophile who quickly moved beyond Ashcan realism to develop a late, Americanized version of Impressionism: it may not have changed history, but it still looks fresh and original.”), and in October, the Wall Street Journal featured a piece in which it asked six luminaries to weigh in on the topic of escape, among them the artist and film director Julian Schnabel, whose work was part of a joint show at MoAFL. It’s that kind of attention that brings just the sort of awareness Clearwater was and is determined to raise for the museum.

Bonnie Clearwater joined the Museum in September 2013 after 18 years at Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

The trend is likely T to co continue. “Café Dolly: Dolly Picabia, Schnabel, Willumsen”—which Willum Clearwater refers to as her Clearwa “first big eexhibit” since arriving MoAFL—is currently running at MoAFL—i February 1st, 2015; “American through Februa Photography: Martin Z. Margulies Scene Photography Collection” runs through March 22, 2015; and 2015, more than 30 from February 26-May 31, 2 works from Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera will be on display from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection in Mexico alongside works from NSU’s own Mexican Modernism collection. In tandem, Rizzoli is publishing a book by art historian and Frida Kahlo expert Helga Prignitz-Poda that will contain illustrations and document the works in the exhibition. And the hits keep on coming. In addition to the exhibits, Clearwater has implemented a number of new programs, many of which have been more well received than she could have expected. “Our lectures and talks in our 256-seat Horvitz Auditorium have been consistently attracting standing-room only crowds,” she reports. “The artist panel for the exhibition of first-generation Cuban exile artists, which took place on a Saturday evening this past July, was sold out, and we had to turn away over 100 people for my art talk with Julian Schnabel in

October. Schnabel also presented a day-long Master Painter Workshop at our AutoNation Academy of Art + Design, which was the event of a lifetime.” In August, a new series of conferences was announced that is dedicated to presenting innovative methods in art education for children, teenagers and adults called The Art of Teaching Art, to be held in the Spring of 2015 and 2016. “It’s important to show we’ve established a certain level of scholarship and tutorial expertise,” Clearwater explains. “Dr. Barbara Buhler Lynes, our senior curator, is a foremost expert on Georgia O’Keefe, and the director and founder of the O’Keefe Research Center in Santa Fe; she is now working with me on our scholarship research, curatorial program and our publications as well as establishing three major research centers.” Yet another goal, Clearwater adds, is transforming the museum’s AutoNation Academy of Art + Design, which offers year-round art classes in everything from drawing to painting to photography and digital and gaming arts, to students of all ages from childhood through adulthood, “into a major center.” It’s only been a little more than a year, but Clearwater’s already leaving her mark—and there’s much more to look forward to.
