HEART TO HEART In today’s world, where it feels often like there’s an epidemic of insanity sweeping the globe and every day we hear less and less about love and more and more about hate, it’s nice that there’s at least one day that’s devoted completely to the former. Not that Valentine’s Day ever effects outpourings of love between nations, or religions, or political parties, but at least for one day we feel warm and fuzzy and get to bask in a display or two of affection, whether it’s in the form of a card, a box of candy, a bouquet of flowers— you get the idea. So we at inWeston used that one day as inspiration and themed much of this FebruaryMarch issue around it with our annual Love & Romance Issue, which you’re holding now. It’s a lot of fun, and frankly, uplifting to spend weeks interviewing and putting together photographs of loving couples who are beating the odds in modern times, such as those in our feature on page 60. It’s also not exactly arduous work gathering ideas for our annual Valentine’s Day Gift Guide (page 102), or selecting sparkly delights for our Jewelry Box section. And it’s most definitely no hardship to travel on your behalf to romantic destinations

so that we can report back to you on them, three of which we’ve included in “Three for Two,” on page 72. But really, all that isn’t about us, or how much we enjoy putting it together, because in the end, we’re putting it together for you. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy reading through and perusing the pics on the pages of this issue as much as we enjoyed creating them. And maybe they’ll actually not just keep you entertained, but offer you an idea or two for one of the most inspiring days of the year. Because no matter who you are or what you think about a manufactured holiday, it’s hard to argue with the power of love, and what showing it does for those around us. Enjoy the issue.

SWITCHING GEARS TACKLING A MID-LIFE CAREER CHANGE, PUBLISHER JIM NORTON HAS SET HIS SIGHTS ON THE REAL ESTATE MARKET. By Jennifer Kramer

Q&A with Jim Norton

Jim Norton began his career in direct marketing, carefully climbing the corporate ladder from sales to management, eventually being recruited by a group of local newspapers. “After that, I founded my own magazine group. We had great success and it was incredibly rewarding for me to see something succeed from the ground up.” Norton is hoping to do exactly that with his new real estate venture, which is “geared toward the luxury market in Weston, perhaps first-time homeowners or those who are ready for an upgrade,” he says. According to Norton, the next four years are critical for the city. “We’re currently experiencing

Q:1 Why did you decide to make the switch from publishing to real estate? “Even though I have left the publishing industry—for now—I’m still very tuned in to the community, the businesses here and the lifestyle the city offers both residents and visitors. Now that I’ve hung my hat with Coldwell Banker, I can continue to share my passion for the city and help others who want to experience the lifestyle.”

40

inWESTON MAGAZINE

Q:2 How has your life changed because of it? “The truth is, it hasn’t changed too drastically. It’s been a very smooth transition. I continue to work from the road, attending networking meetings and working with community organizations like the Rotary Club and the Weston Philharmonic.”

a redevelopment stage where we need to ensure our infrastructure is not only maintained, but [improved], which will create new business opportunities along with supporting the current local business.” Norton believes part of this redevelopment includes attracting empty nesters to the neighborhood by building condominiums and apartments. Even with all this underway, “Weston is an easy sell. It makes perfect sense that this was my next move.” Jim Norton can be reached at 954.600.5896 or jim@jimnortonpa.com.

Q:3 When did you become a commissioner for the City of Weston? “I’ve been serving on the commission since 2010 and was reelected in 2014. I’ve been involved in so many aspects of the city from the very beginning, including the Charter School, the Rotary Club and the Weston Philharmonic, that people have gotten to know me, and most importantly, trust that I have the city’s best interests at heart.”

Q:4 What do you love about Weston? “Our residents really make the city what it is. Even with the diversity in the community, everyone works together for the betterment of the neighborhood to ensure Weston continues to be a great place to live, work and play. We’ve also been tapped as the safest city in Florida, so that’s a real selling point. And then there’s the aesthetics—the icing on the cake. We place a lot of value on that and see it as an investment, not only in the city itself but also because properties continue to appreciate in value.”

WOMEN FOR WOMEN

The doctors at Esse Plastic Surgery have a built a practice that focuses on supporting women. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, roughly 90 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2013 were performed on women. And yet, more than 90 percent of plastic surgeons in the US are men. Dr. Tracey Stokes and Dr. Laura Sudarsky, partners in Esse Plastic Surgery, are out to change that by focusing on reassuring women about their essential concerns they have when contemplating surgery. Game, Set, Match SHOP WITH THE PROS AT MATCH POINT TENNIS. While “love” in the game of tennis is something to be avoided, the game itself is perfect for keeping the love alive—between couples who like to get competitive with each other, or team up for a literal double(s) date. Whether you’re a newbie or an old pro, Match Point Tennis has everything you need to keep your game on point. “Whatever you need, we have it,” says owner Joel Greenbaum. “Racquets, shoes, apparel, accessories—it’s all here. Plus, everyone that works here plays the game. We use the products we sell so we can speak to you with experience.” Beyond the essentials, all three of their locations have a professional stringer on staff to keep your racquet in good shape. “The stringer from our Davie store is very talented and travels with the pro tournaments. Plus, it’s all catalogued in the computer and benchmarked for the future,” add Greenbaum. “In fact, many pros that live in the area—Ivo Karloviþ, Genie [Eugenie] Bouchard—come in to have their racquets serviced for upcoming tours.” If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. Visit the Davie location at 11306 W. State Rd. 84 or shop their online store at matchpoint-tennis.com. 44

FASHION BLOGGER MARIA TETTAMANTI—AKA “THE WORDY GIRL” OF THEWORDYGIRL.COM— DISHES ON HER LUSTS, MUSTS AND ONES TO WATCH.

ROCK ON: The Valentino Rockstud phenomenon shows no signs of simmering down (thank goodness!). The Italian label’s latest incarnation of its coveted heel is proof that we live in an unequivocally stud-obsessed world. Available at The Webster, 9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour.

2

BOLD BIJOUX: Give your simple studs the day off and try a bold pair instead. These Courtney Lee Collection earrings from the South Florida-based Love & Pieces online boutique are perfect for partying or elevating an everyday look. Available at loveandpieces.com.

3

TIME OUT: The Datejust Pearlmaster 34 is unmistakably Rolex’s crowning jewelry watch. Made of Everose gold and encrusted with dazzling diamonds, the bejeweled bezel is one to watch (pun intended). Available at Mayors, 19501 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura.

4

LUCITE LOVE: Glittery goodness aside, this Edie Parker clutch is utterly unique and replete with a built-in mirror perfect for makeup touchups. Genius. Available at The Webster, 9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour.

WHITE HOT: Designer Carolina Herrera once advised me to never underestimate the power of a crisp, white shirt. This Rag & Bone dress is modern twist on a classic wardrobe staple. Available at Rag & Bone, 9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour.

6

SEEING RED: For great basics, Frank & Eileen’s crinkled tops are my go-to brand. Comfortable and classic, you’ll feel the love, too, whenever you wear one of their off-thebeaten-path blouses. Available at Tupelo Honey, 18785 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura.

MIRROR MAGIC: iÌ Ãi wi ready in a snap! The Glam Screen Super HD Mirror/ Screen protector turns your smartphone into an actual mirror. How so? It adheres to the front of all iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones, and is clear when you’re on your device but turns into a mirror when you’re not. Mind. Blown. Available at glamscreen.com.

8

FLIRTY AND FUN: Palm Beach prep is creeping into to the boudoir, compliments of a cheeky collaboration between Lilly Pulitzer and Hanky Panky. Their bra and panty sets are the perfect mix of naughty and nice. Available exclusively at Nordstrom and Lilly Pulitzer boutiques.

FEROCIOUS FASHION: My sentiments toward this rare Sophia Webster specimen are literally inscribed on its sky-high heels. Killer, indeed. Available at The Webster, 9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour.

relationship and wasn’t looking to jump into anything new. Then he met Tony Beall. “We were playing * ÃÌ "vwVi] Ì i « «Õ >À L>À }> i] at Roscoe’s on Sunday afternoon in Chicago, so I left him a message,” recollects Beall, who offered to make him dinner, a romantic habit the couple still partakes in after 22 years together. “Even if we’re running around all day, if Tony’s home, he’s cooking—my favorite is a pasta with cream sauce—and we sit down together, at a properly set table with candles and all,” says Birbalis. The couple left the icy Chicago winters behind in 1998, choosing to relocate to South Florida. “An affordable place to live 15 years ago,” jokes Birbalis, “where we could enjoy the beach,” which they like to do on their one day off together. They’re also passionate home remodelers. “We love taking on projects big and small,” he adds. “We’re on our third home that’s a wÝiÀ Õ««iÀ°» ƂÃ Ì i v Õ `iÀ v ÃÌiÀ «À wÌ Consultancy, which received the 2012 Small Business of the Year Award presented by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Beall is very involved in the community, often with both daytime and evening obligations. “We’re both so busy,” he says, “but Ray really carries the torch at home and makes sure things are taken care of. It’s what you hope for in any relationship and we have a great partnership. I always say that we’re together to complement—not complicate—each other’s lives, and it’s true. We have a very playful and optimistic approach to our life together.”

This is truly one of those resorts that is so complete, you never need to leave the property—nor will you want to, other than to at least see what the 120-square-mile Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba offers, or indulge in a sinfully luscious breakfast at Linda’s Dutch Pancakes and Pizzas (Palm Beach, 3 6-D, Noord; lindas-aruba.com). The ever-breezy weather on the island is so inviting, you may want to spend all your time outdoors, and you can, for the most part, taking in breakfast on the terrace at La Vista, hanging at one of the pools (complete with swim-up bar, natch), getting out on the water for some exercise, or chilling at the members-only beach. But there’s plenty to enjoy inside the hotel, as well, from the upscale shops, including jewelry stores like Colombian Emeralds (which

carries treasures from our own Lauren G Adams) to the truly lovely gift shop that carries souvenirs, beautiful designer beachwear, hats, items handmade by locals, snacks, towels, hats and sundries. And for those who still aren’t exhausted after a full day of sun, sea and dining, the Stellaris Casino is open— and lively—24 hours. Guest rooms are the most spacious on the island, and super comfy with the Marriott’s cozy Revive bedding, 37-inch LCD y>Ì «> i /6Ã > ` À Þ «À Û>Ìi balconies perfect for relaxing with a cocktail or cup of coffee and just gazing out at the view, whether it be the pool or the water or both. There’s a reason Little Palm Island & Spa was named among the World’s Best Hotels by Travel + Leisure magazine. Actually there’s more than one reason. Although you might miss it the wÀÃÌ Ì i Þ Õ ÌÀÞ Ì w ` ÌÃ L>Ài Þ visible entrance off the Overseas Highway, once you do pull into the reception building, you’re warmly greeted by the staff, who proffer some of the most delicious rum punch this side of the Caribbean (sprinkled with

freshly grated coconut) that you can savor until you’re collected by the water shuttle that will transport you to the diminutive (5½ acres) Little Torch Key, where the 30 thatched-roof bungalows are located. (The only other way to reach it is by seaplane.) All are rustic outside, lovely inside, with `iÀ wÝÌÕÀià > ` L> L furnishings, and showers both inside and out. Lush, secluded and meticulously maintained, this little piece

of paradise is all about romance, serenity, unwinding and unplugging—and while there is WiFi (though service is sketchy at times), there are no televisions iÝVi«Ì v À Ì i i Ì i Ài>Ì Room, where comfortable sofas are arranged in cozy vignettes and there are books and games available. a all, in the form of lazing poolside sipping the concoction of at yyour choice and tucking into freshly made ceviche, sandwiches or burgers for lunch (served at your chair, if you like). The dining experience in the evening is arguably one of the loveliest you’ll have anywhere. Make your reservations nightly at The Dining Room; request a table outside on the terrace and take a chance on the tasting menu with wine pairing, which changes nightly and is truly outstanding. Heads up: you may w ` Þ ÕÀÃi v v>Vi Ì v>Vi Ü Ì Ì i iÞ `iiÀ Ì >Ì vÀii Þ À > Ì i à > `] Ü >««i>À Ì>L ià `i >Ì Ì i wÀÃÌ Ü vv v Ì i LÀi>` basket, hoping you’ll invite them to join you. (Full Meal Plans are available, which are inclusive of all three meals for $195 per day per person, plus tax and gratuity). The wine list is also varied and extensive, comprising 300 varieties. Sunday brunch is a half-day event, as you’ll learn when you see the off-island guests piling in Ì }iÌ Ì i À w v Ì° And while you are here in heaven on earth, don’t miss an ethereal and indulgent treatment (or two, or four) at the SpaTerre, the setting of which strikes the perfect balance between island rustic and of-the-moment and the ambience of which will leave you lingering, reluctant to leave. The old adage says that it takes 40 days to change a habit—could the same be said for love? So they agreed to date each other for 40 days and record their experiences on a website they created for this purpose. What began as an experiment between two friends became an Internet sensation, drawing 5 million visitors from around the world since its launch. KOSHER LUST: LOVE IS NOT THE ANSWER Shmuley Boteach

Celebrity Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and author of the best-selling Kosher Sex has a new book for all denominations: Kosher Lust: Love is Not the Answer. It goes something like this: Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Boy and girl enjoy the sparks in the early years but eventually settle into a comfortable friendship, and all passion disappears from their marriage. Sound familiar? As many as one in three long-term marriages in America are sexless, and most people accept this as the inevitable course of a romantic relationship. In this book, Boteach explains why the prioritizing of love and companionship in marriage is all wrong, and why we should not go quietly into that dark night of celibate marriage. It is not love, Boteach theorizes, but lust that is the glue in a marriage. Here, he writes about the three principles of lust and how to tap into them, plumbing the depths of the erotic mind and delivering a revolutionary message with the power to completely transform your most important relationship. $24.95, Gefen Publishing. 100
