publisher’s letter

I’LL

TAKE As someone who was not born and raised in South Florida, I marvel at how people here complain about how hot it is in the summer. I suspect I speak for quite a few fellow transplants who are permanently finished with shoveling snow—I love New York, but not that part of it—when I say I’ll take the heat and humidity instead and just deal with it at the beach. Which brings me to beach reading. We have made some exciting additions to inWeston recently, adding columns on luxury automobiles, the arts, books and real estate. On our website, inwestonmagazine.com, you’ll not only find the online edition of the magazine, but also the new Weston Vida, which has been celebrating the Weston lifestyle since 2011. It also offers a more in-depth look at our community, showcasing local businesses, products and services, and local residents, while providing information to nourish the mind, body and soul. We’re also proud to be the only publication that has made its features available in Spanish for the reading pleasure of our Hispanic and bilingual residents who choose to read it in that language. We continue to expand on what we offer you because today, after nearly two years in, we have become part of the community. That means our quest to understand and deliver what you’re interested in and what you find relevant and entertaining is more important than ever. It’s also why we love hearing from you—most often, with compliments, thankfully—and welcome your feedback and suggestions. Keep them coming. This is your magazine and we’re here to deliver what you want. Enjoy the issue—and the heat.

OPERATIVE ARTISTRY DR. MESSA RELISHES THE CHANCE TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES, ONE PROCEDURE AT A TIME. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Q&A with Dr. Charles A Messa III

Even as a child, Dr. Charles A. Messa, III always knew he wanted to be involved in the medical ďŹ eld. “I grew up in a family surrounded by that,â€? he says, adding, “My dad was a dentist and my uncle was a physician. From the age of 15, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. Watching my father use his hands to effect change was very inspiring, and with surgery I knew I could directly intervene in a medical problem and work to eliminate it. Plus, I used to draw and paint a lot as a teen, so this ďŹ eld involving manual dexterity was very appealing to me.â€? Although Dr. Messa originally wanted to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, “dealing with life and death matters and having a huge impact on people’s lives,â€?

Q:1 What sets you apart from other surgeons in the area? “I don’t try to talk patients into surgery. I want them to really believe it is the best option for them. That means I don’t do gimmicky procedures either, buying into the latest trends, quick Ć‚ZGU QT PGZV DKI VJKPI + TGN[ on science and evidence to back up my procedures because I want to earn my patients’ trust.â€?

They were leading a normal life except for this deformity. I saw what a dramatic impact I could have on their lives by ďŹ xing their external complications. ANTONIO LEMUS Following in the footsteps of his uncle, who owned a furniture store in Sunny Isles, Antonio Lemus opened Avanti Furniture in Weston in 2001. “We came from Venezuela and settled here,” he says. “At the time, there were only one or two other furniture stores in the area, both of which were selling more classic, traditional styles. So it made sense to open here and offer the community a modern vibe and style that wasn’t available at that time.” Lemus’ plan couldn’t have worked out any better, and since 2001, Avanti Furniture has been offering Westonites transitional pieces for their entire home. “We started off with a more modern inventory with lots of bright colors and glass material,” he says, “but over the years, we have integrated more wood, natural earth tones and rustic accessories.”

DESIGN FINDS ANTONIO LEMUS FINDS SUCCESS IN WESTON WITH AVANTI FURNITURE. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer As both a resident and business owner in Weston, Antonio Lemus knows the city intimately—and it’s a pleasure for him to provide his fellow Westonites with furniture and accessories for their homes. “We carry everything they need, from furniture for every room to rugs, accessories and even outdoor furniture,” says Lemus. And if you should need a little guidance when it comes to decorating the home, he can help with that, too: Avanti also offers complete design services to their customers. Lemus explains, “We’ll go to their house and assist them with space planning by creating 3D floor plans that include furniture placement along with color and design elements.” The same goes for office space. “We do quite a bit of commercial work, from designing conference rooms to work stations,

and offer those clients the same piece of mind via our professional design services. We work a lot in Downtown Miami, Aventura and also some local areas as well.” In addition to design consultation, Lemus knows Avanti stands out from the competition thanks to its boutique feel. “We put a lot of thought into the lines we carry, many of which are from Italy and Spain,” he says. “We also carry accessories from all over the world, including Poland and the Philippines. We’re world travelers, visiting the shows in High Point [NC] and Milan and also stopping in at various factories along the way so we can keep an eye on processing and manufacturing.” Such frequent traveling helps keep Avanti’s new 7,000-square-foot location, along with a huge warehouse, stocked with fresh finds, an advantage for customers looking to fill their home right away who would rather not wait months on end for items to arrive. 111 Weston Rd., Weston, 954.358.6900; avantifurniture.net.

“Every day is something different in this business: new projects, new challenges, new customers. It keeps me on my toes.” 40

Earth’s Favorite portsCar S THE 2015 BMW i8 DOES A PLANET GOOD. By Steve Siler

For most of our lives, the majority of automobiles that were beautiful and fast came at a cost. We’re not talking about a monetary cost, but rather a cost to our environment in the form of low fuel efficiency and high emissions. Why lead off this issue’s luxury auto review with such sobering facts? Because, happily, those costs do not apply in the case of the spectacular BMW i8. The i8 is radical in every sense of the word, an expression of luxury performance that is fresh, lightweight and, of course, quite swift. One look and it’s immediately clear that the i8 is no pipe-and-slippers bruiser-coupe, à la Bentley. Nor is it a hedonistic rich-boy-racer, à la Ferrari or Lamborghini. Rendered mostly in carbon fiber and aluminum, it looks and drives like nothing else on the road. If we could describe it in one word, we’d call it “eco-chic.” Make no mistake, though, there’s plenty of exotic style covering nearly every square inch of the i8’s low-slung body, from its brooding, forward-leaning nose with active aero shutters back to the sloping, flying rear window pillars that form aero pathways through which you can

slide your hand. Black and blue graphic elements make the i8 appear like nothing else on the road. Another i8 signature is its swan-wing door design, which turns every arrival into a spectacle. This means that getting in and out takes a bit of practice—especially if you’re a female who is fond of short skirts—but once mastered, ingress/ egress can be truly glamorous. Once installed, you’ll find yourself inside the most contemporary environment in all of automobiledom. Futuristic without appearing contrived, the i8’s swoopy interior is delightfully sensible, utterly devoid of gimmicks. Indeed, if you’ve spent any time in any recent BMW, you’ll know how to work pretty much everything inside. The only drawback? The rear seats are vestigial at best, fine for purses or tiny dogs, less so for humans over the age of 12. And cargo space is rather, um,

limited, as there’s a tiny three-cylinder engine tucked between the rear seats and the rear wheels, leaving little room for the fruits of a Barneys binge. Speaking of the engine, the i8’s power is delivered in near silence from a sophisticated hybrid all-wheel-drive powertrain that uses electricity whenever possible during day-to-day driving, but turns into an eco-racer when you stand on the accelerator. Our friends at Car and Driver tested its acceleration at a neck-snapping 3.6 seconds from zero to 60 miles per hour, and rest assured, it can go much faster

than that if you keep your foot buried. Handling isn’t quite at the caliber of a Porsche 911, but is excellent nonetheless. (This is a BMW, after all.) Best of all, at least insofar as this car exists in the first place: fuel efficiency rivals that of compact cars, at 28 mpg in the city, 29 on the highway. There’s much more to say about the BMW i8. We’re all a bit old to be asking for our mother’s approval before purchasing something, but if you were to run your idea for a new sports car by Mother Earth, she’d go for this.

LEFT TO RIGHT:

The i8 combines a minuscule, ecofriendly 3-cylinder engine tucked between the rear seats and rear wheels with electric power to take care of everyday driving; the car’s body includes slick-looking aero shutters and pathways.

FLORIDA’S COOLEST HOTELS, BUT WE

The Sagamore was one of the first, if not the first, hotels anywhere to really boast a fabulous art collection, so much so that it has come to be known as The Art Hotel. That’s because its owners, Marty and Cricket Taplin, began collecting with a passion more than 25 years ago and haven’t stopped; in fact, their collection of contemporary art is so extensive that they rotate installations between their residence and the hotel, home of the Cricket Taplin Collection. Here you will encounter art literally everywhere, from the moment you step into the lobby and continuing through stairwells and hallways and the garden, as well as site-specific installations throughout the building. The art here does not just take the form of sculptures and paintings, but furnishings, light art, paper art, murals, and on and on it goes. 1671 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, 305.535.8088; sagamorehotel.com.

Located in the Art Deco district, this little 70-room jewel of a hotel is appointed mainly in neutral-toned furnishings and polished woods accented by beachy blue and teal furnishings and accents. The Art Deco era is alive and well here, as seen in the light fixtures, lobby furnishings and of course the architecture, and the art, while subtle, is well curated, from the Chinese prints in the hotel foyer to the paintings of 50s and 60s swimsuit gals. You won’t find yourself bumping into sculptures in every corner or encountering a mural around every hallway, but there are other places designed for that. This is an entirely new way to experience a few good pieces well placed and perfectly chosen for the environment in which they reside. 1400 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach, 305.531.5571; winterhavenhotelsobe.com.

The Artist House KEY WEST

Key West is an artists’ town, and nothing epitomizes that characterization more— or better, arguably—than this restored Victorian 1890s mansion-cum-guesthouse just steps from Duval St. and the ever-effervescent center of the city. That’s in large part due to its former incarnation as the home of painter Robert Otto, who studied his craft at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago and spent time working in Europe to develop his style, and his wife, Anne, an accomplished concert pianist. Today, its colorful, art-filled rooms are among the most photographed in Key West; it’s a stop on just about every tour one can take there—the Historic Walking Tour, Conch Train and Trolley Tours among them—and has even been featured on The Discovery Channel due to the rumors that Anne’s spirit, outfitted in her wedding dress, is said to have been seen in the Turret Room. 534 Eaton St., Key West, 305.296.3977; artisthousekeywest.com.

Bohemian Hotel Celebration CELEBRATION

Again here, guests benefit from the passion of the founder; in this case, Kessler Collection’s founder and CEO Richard Kessler, both a distinguished hotelier and avid art collector also known for his philanthropic efforts—especially toward education, with scholarship funds to support excellence in teaching in the fine arts. When he partnered with Marriott International and their prestigious Autograph Collection of boutique hotels five years ago, he commissioned an original work of art from expressionist Jean Claude Roy, which he then gifted to a lucky hotel guest that spring. Today, this charming and lovely hotel reflects Kessler’s love of art throughout, enhancing the experience of all who are fortunate enough to spend time here. 700 Bloom St., Celebration, 888.249.4007; celebrationhotel.com.

In 2012, Deckelbaum was paddleboarding on the Middle River at George English Park when he noticed right across the water what looked like a couple of unoccupied garden apartment buildings that could be put to better use. location across the park set his creative juices flowing. “I thought about what kind of condo design could work there,” he recalls. “Even though we had more space than we needed, I wanted to build fewer, larger residences [mostly two, three or four bedrooms], and then add a lot of amenities to be shared by the 100 owners.” The developer, whose family of builders has completed more than 2,000 units in excess of $800 million, wanted to lure back local homeowners looking to exchange their large houses in the western suburbs for carefree condos in the city. The units, ideal for empty nesters, young couples with small children, or international snowbirds who want to spend half the year in Fort Lauderdale, are being constructed for real people who want to live in real homes, as opposed to weekend crash pads. Lacking a long central corridor, residences will have their own private elevators—a unique amenity. Deckelbaum decided that the individual units should average about 2,000 square feet—the smallest is 1,700 square feet, while one of the largest is an 8,000-square-foot-long loft facing the river between the second and third floors—and have large, panoramic balconies that 58

GENESIS RODRÍGUEZ EPITOMIZES EXOTIC BEAUTY. Dark-haired, smoldering and sexy whether she’s posing provocatively in a bikini or scrubbed and conservative for a movie role like that of Abigail in Hours, the Miami-born, Venezuelan actress, at age 27, has already managed to defy the stereotype and land an impressive list of diverse and interesting roles. Still, she remains fully aware that the struggles that come with being a Latina actress in Hollywood are real—even in modern times. Not only does that not scare her; it’s encouraged her to advocate for her fellow actresses. “I am a Latina with a mission and a journey,” Rodríguez told Latin Post. “I really do have a north, and my north is to not repeat myself too much. I don’t want to be the girl that’s always the cop, or always the lawyer, or always the sexpot in a movie, eye candy. That’s so easy to put us in the stereotype. I want the Birdman roles and I know that’s not going to happen for me so easily, so I have to continue to do different roles every single movie.” Impressive, considering she grew up in South Florida the daughter of a model, Carolina Pérez, and a famous father, José Luis Rodríguez, the Venezuelan actor and singer known to millions of fans as “El Puma.” The showbiz bug bit early: at 2½, she entered the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami, where she participated in

school drama shows. The decision to stay on the path to an acting career came in those tender years, and as a teenager, she studied acting, dance and vocal preparation, even taking classes in California and in New York at The Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institutes. Back home in South Florida, Rodríguez landed a recurring role on the superpopular soap Days of Our Lives, at the same time dipping her toe into Spanish language roles, playing dual leads as Rosita Amado and Violeta Hurtado in the primetime series Dame Chocolate on Telemundo. But her big break came in 2012 when Will Ferrell was making an all-Spanish telenovela spoof, Casa de Mi Padre, that demanded a love interest who not only spoke perfect Spanish but was also willing to spoof the genre. Enter Rodríguez, who since then has appeared opposite Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy in Identity Thief and Liam Neeson in Run All Night, released this past spring, as well as with Paul Walker in his final film, Hours. Next up this year are the thriller Home with Topher Grace and Patricia Clarkson and Yoga Hosers with Johnny Depp and Haley Joel Osment. So yes, Rodríguez is clearly ensconced in Hollywood. But in an interview with GQ in 2013 she talked of how she misses Miami and still cheers on the HEAT when they visit as “the loudest, rowdiest, most obnoxious fan in L.A.—[with] the strength of 10 fans,” she said. “I go over each game with my uncle every single day they play.” But she laments the fact that she hasn’t met a single current player on the team: “No one since Shaq! I’d give anything just to take a picture with those gigantic guys.” But back to that mission she mentioned earlier. After pointing out how much her roles have differed between films like Run All Night to Identity Thief to Casa de mi Padre, Rodríguez explains, “I have a plan. That plan is to break stereotypes for Latina women, and it’s hard…. And that’s OK…. Most of my family came and did the struggle, and I am doing it my own way.” She held firm to that mission last March 8 on International Women’s Day, paying homage to her fellow strong women in show business and the support that’s building among them. “Funny story: my best friend

in LA, she’s my competition,” Rodriguez told the Latin Post. “Her name is Natalie Martinez. We go out for the same exact jobs. She is a Cuban from Miami; I am Cuban from Miami. Like, we could not be more the same in terms of our roots and upbringing, but we are two totally different actresses,” she explained. “We met and everyone wants to put us against each other. She was up for this part; if it’s not her, it’s me, and that’s how I saw it. I was like, ‘I am not going to be your competition. I think you’re the coolest chick I’ve ever met.’ I feel it’s much stronger that we show them that we’re united and support each other. I am all about female empowerment. When we’re united, we’re so much better together.” And although Rodríguez is well known for her roles in telenovelas (Prisionera, Dame Chocolate and Doña Bárbara), she has something to say about the way women are portrayed in that genre. “That’s a whole other monster,” she said. “I don’t know why it hasn’t changed. It’s just like an unsolved mystery to me. It has stayed exactly the same, stuck in time and it’s more because of tradition. I feel like they are never going to change because of that. It’s nostalgia. It’s what your mom’s mom grew up on and so on and so forth.” To further illustrate her frustration, she recounts how she took over the task of doing her own makeup for filming those shows because she couldn’t stand the feeling of having so much of it caked on her by the makeup artists. “I could not stand the huge amounts of makeup they were putting on me and how it made me feel,” she revealed. “Like if I didn’t have this makeup I wasn’t as beautiful as the rest of the cast.” But she also had a nobler cause, relative to Rodriguez’s continuing mission on behalf of Latinas and women in general. “I didn’t want the little girls in their houses to feel like if they didn’t have all this makeup on that they weren’t going to be beautiful. That has also been my mission for Latina women: ‘Live in your skin, you don’t need the mask.’ And I am a L’Oreal girl. I just got a campaign with L’Oreal and I want to empower the beauty that you have without having to cover it up and try to be something that you don’t have to be.” Genesis Rodriguez is not only talking the talk, she’s walking the walk.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: She’s beautiful, to be sure, but Rodríguez is out to prove she’s more than just a pretty face; at the Thunder v. Heat game in 2014; playing a hit man in Identity Thief; with Paul Walker in Hours; and with Liam Neeson in Run All Night.

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL Weston’s global influx of immigrants, attracted to A-rated schools, safe neighborhoods and a surprisingly bustling business scene, have helped the city rise to the top. BY JENNIFER LESLIE KRAMER 72

inWESTON MAGAZINE

DRIVING THROUGH WESTON, IT’S NO SURPRISE WHY IT’S BECOME such a notable South Florida city. The palm-lined streets, manicured retail plazas, gated residences, A-rated schools and topnotch safety record appeal to anyone. And then there are the countless awards and accolades the city has been honored with since its incorporation in 1996: Last year, the city boasted three of the wealthiest zip codes compiled by the South Florida Business Journal, all of which fell within the top 10; in 2012 it was ranked No. 63 among the 100 Best Places to Live— America’s Best Small Cities by Money Magazine; and in 2011, Weston was ranked as the No. 1 Nationwide Housing Market in a Businessweek survey of 1,000 of the largest cities nationwide, which found property values had risen 15.1 percent from February 2009 to August 2011, while most areas declined. In short, living in Weston—if you can afford it—is a no-brainer, not only for locals, but even more so for international immigrants looking to relocate to South Florida.

“They’re coming from a stellar school system—especially the private schools in Venezuela—so that’s at the top of their list when deciding where to relocate.” —MARIA PENALOZA

Á

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP:

INTERNATIONAL INFLUX While Weston may be fondly referred to as “Westonzuela,” a playful reference to the numerous Venezuelan ex-pats that have relocated to the area, there’s actually a wide variety of South American nationalities present, and according to Monica CatalunaShand of the Kores Corp., a Weston-based real estate agency specializing in international buyers and both commercial and residential properties, it’s the Colombians that top that list. Lest you think this international flood occurred overnight, Cataluna-Shand points out that it began occurring in the late 90s and early 2000s. “At that point, Colombia was experiencing political upheaval and the country was really being challenged in every way. Those who could, left, looking for a safer

ra their children and continue place to raise their business endeavors. Soon after, in the mid 2000s, a large portion of Venezuelans followed for similar reasons. Beyond that, we see a lot of Brazilians as well, and a small but growing Asian population. Weston is truly a melting pot.” Maria Penaloza, a broker with Broker’s Real Estate Broward LLC, echoes this sentiment. “When I came from Venezuela in 2002, the Colombians were already here, and the Venezuelans were starting to come on strong. Recently, I’ve started to notice more Brazilians. But what’s most interesting is the large amount of Asians and Southeast Asians, from countries like China, Korea, Japan and India, who are here via company transfers.” Indeed, an impressive number of international companies have large branches in the Weston environs, such as Royal Caribbean and Marriott International. Despite word from locals in the know, the overarching belief about Weston is that it’s comprised solely of South Americans. Yet, according to the 2010 US Census, which indicated that the city’s population was 44.9 percent Hispanic, they had not yet become the majority of the population. In fact, Adele Pick, a realtor with Weston’s Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate and a South African transplant, notes that in the early 90s, a third of Weston locals were Jewish, which was reflected in the number of Jewish schools and temples that flooded the area. “Certainly, it’s a different story today as many of those same schools are struggling to fill classrooms.” She continues, “Beyond that, Weston was originally a middle ground for local families looking for a new neighborhood between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. There were many newlyweds just starting out, with young children who wanted that idyllic piece of the pie—that was our story as well.” And then there was that pesky little storm named Andrew, most definitely a recordsetting event for South Florida as a whole, but also for the city of Weston specifically. “Following [Hurricane] Andrew in 1992 there was a huge influx of locals from South Miami and Kendall who were simply looking to start over,” explains Pick. “Certainly, many of those residents were Cuban-Americans, but they weren’t new to the state. They’ve lived here

for generations and have been so successful at assimilating themselves that many times you would never even know they weren’t born and raised in South Florida. The same can’t be said for more recent arrivals who tend to jell together. You see them out and about in large boisterous groups. They make the [Weston] Town Center vibrant and alive; they’ve really made the city their own.”

WHY WESTON? Ask any Weston resident what originally drew him or her to the neighborhood and you’ll likely hear the same answer nine times out of 10: the schools. Penaloza points out that most of the monied crowds arriving from South America are accustomed to high-caliber private schools. “They’re coming from a stellar school system—especially the private schools in Venezuela—so that’s at the top of their list when deciding where to relocate. Additionally, many families are following in the footsteps of their friends and relatives,” Penaloza continues. Literally. It’s not uncommon to find large groups of family members or friends living in the same communities and even on the same street. “They want to be near familiar faces to make their new neighborhood feel as much like home as possible,” she reasons.

Monica Cataluna-Shand and business partner Carilin Frau are both Puerto Rican ex-pats who moved to Weston and opened a business focused on helping other new, international residents.

“I still run four other martial arts schools in Mexico, so it’s important for me to live somewhere with access to my country.” —IVAN SANDERS

Á

Ivan Sanders, seen flying through the air at the World Hapkido Championships, is a recent resident of Weston who relocated from Mexico in March to expand his martial arts business.

Saul Rosa, a Weston resident and business owner since 2006, when he relocated from Venezuela with two of his sons, is a prime example of all of these instances. “My sister had been living in Weston since 2004 and we wanted to be close to her and the family,” he recollects. “Plus, my sons were five and nine at the time, so finding an excellent school system was very important for us.” Schools aside, safety is another top concern, especially for South Americans relocating from notoriously dangerous locations. “Many families are coming from political hotspots where it’s often risky just being outside,” explains Penaloza. “Weston’s great reputation for safety and numerous gated communities bring a sense of security and peace of mind to new residents.” Indeed, the city lays claim to the lowest crime rate per capita in Broward County, a point of pride for both residents and city officials alike. As if all this isn’t enough, there’s also the most basic and time-honored criterion for choosing a new home: location, location, location. For families relocating from other countries, especially those in South, Central and

Latin America, South Florida is ideally located, and with two international airports serving the local community, it’s a hop, skip and a jump from their native countries. Ivan Sanders, owner of Imperial Martial Arts in Weston, moved here this past March with his wife and three children. “Besides the great schools and already knowing some friends in the area, I can get home to Cancún quite easily. I still run four other martial arts schools in Mexico, so it’s important for me to live somewhere with access to my country. It’s only a little more than an hour to fly back, which lets me travel every three months or so as needed.”

BOOMING BUSINESSES According to Penaloza, about 95 percent of Weston is residential, but the rest of the city is made up of businesses, many of which happen to be internationally owned. The most recent US Census confirms that about 43 percent of businesses are Hispanic-owned. While this doesn’t indicate that all of those businesses were formed by recent international arrivals, it’s safe to deduce that this is indeed the case for a large portion of them.

Cataluna-Shand explains the phenomenon: “Rarely will you find new immigrants looking for any old job. They have saved and planned for many years to relocate to the US, and a key point in this plan involves starting or purchasing a business upon arrival. This way, they can obtain a work visa. Logistically, it’s a step in the right direction.” One such success story is Maria Cerruto, who moved to Weston from Bolivia in 1998 with her family. They originally settled in Key Biscayne, but were unhappy with the transient nature of the community. They moved to Weston upon hearing of the excellent schools and finally found a place that felt like home. “Once we had established ourselves in Weston, I opened a Kumon learning practice. I started with five students, renting a room in the old community center. Ten years ago, we moved to the Bonaventure Town Center Shops, and today, we have more than 300 students in the program and a lot of international customers, not only from South America, but also from India and Asia.” Rosa has a similar story. Not only did he and his wife purchase a Pak-N-Ship, which they recently sold, he also began work as a business broker under Kores Corp., helping new international residents navigate the business buying process. “It’s incredibly difficult to just pick up your life, relocate and find a new job, so they end up starting a new business or purchasing one, hopefully in the same field they previously worked in,” Rosa explains. “It’s my job to educate these parties about their purchases. Many of them are focused on the end goal—receiving legal immigration status—but it’s important they understand the transaction entirely, especially because they’ve had to come up with so much cash to get here and purchase these companies outright. The US doesn’t recognize the Venezuelan Bolivar—they won’t exchange it for you at the airport—which means that they’ve had to make the exchange on the black market and get far less than they should. And yet, if you manage to gather the money and take an educated risk, you can succeed.” Indeed, the city of Weston proves this tenfold.

Young At Art Museum DAVIE

In 1989, Young At Art began as a small, 3,200-square-foot children’s museum created to get kids interested in art for recreational and educational purposes. Since then, it has grown into a 55,000-square-foot collection of activities so extensive it’s impossible to even scratch the surface here. At ArtScapes—one of the four main exhibits—kids travel through The Cave, a slideshow of images conveying 5,000 years of human history, step into a replica of a New York City ÃÕLÜ>Þ V>À] > ` Û iÜ iÝ> « ià v }À>vwÌ >à > i> à v VÀi>Ì Ûi iÝ«ÀiÃà against the oppressive forces of aluminum spray cans. Culture Scapes helps kids understand the diversity of today’s world through the eyes of artists from Haiti, Latin America, Cuba, Africa, Native America and Asia. Greenscapes educates about environmental issues by tying them into art. And on and on it goes. Exhibits run year round, and studio art classes are open to every age range, in the summer as well, from kids aged 3 to teens 13-18 and adults. There are also art camps, from one-day camps to seasonal camps, with different themes (Performance Art, Digital Art and Drawing & Painting are among the choices). As we said: we can’t even scratch the surface here. Just don’t miss it. For more information and details, visit youngatartmuseum.org.

Rock Spa IN THE SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO

1 Seminole Way Hollywood seminolehardrockhollywood.com

When you think of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel, you probably think more about one-arm bandits than two-handed massages. But that’ll change as soon as you’ve experienced the Rock Me Gently warm stone therapy massage ($120 for 50 minutes; $180 for 80 minutes), or the One of a Kind Seasonal Body Wrap, a limited-edition body wrap treatment involving an exfoliating gel and an aromatic modeling syrup meant to melt

stress and leave skin silky smooth and scented with seasonal fruits and flowers ($150 for 80 minutes). A long list of facials for women and men—including the Poker Face ($110 for 50 minutes), using volcanic rock to detoxify, for the latter—addresses everything from aging to lack of hydration (the air conditioning in the casino can be drying, you know). There are also salon services from special occasion makeup to specialty manicures and pedicures, false eyelash application to body waxing. Basically, everything you could ever imagine to get yourself glam for a night out at Council Oak or dancing in one of the clubs on site—or just to go back out into the daylight lookin’ good. To book, call 954.797.5888.

KEEPING IT FRESH RICHARD HALES REFUSES TO REST ON HIS LAURELS, INSTEAD BRINGING THE MIAMI MASSES A NEW DOWNTOWN TACO SHOP. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Q:1

What’s your go-to meal after a late night at the restaurant?

Q:3

“I eat mostly vegan and vegetarian these days, and my wife makes great vegan dishes. The other night she made some falafel for me with a vegan tzatziki sauce. She does great cauliflower tacos also.”

Q:2

Favorite guilty pleasure?

If you don’t know the name Richard Hales, you are missing out: on loaded beef tater tots; on Sichuan twice-cooked Brussels sprouts and, soon, on housemade tortillas. Beyond the impressive Asian fusion dishes coming out of Hales’ food truck, Dim Ssäm à gogo, and his kitchens at Sakaya and Blackbrick Chinese, the latter of which—and the lone Miami locale—was recognized last year as one of Bon Appétit magazine’s 50 nominees for the title of America’s Best New Restaurants, there’s also Centro, the soon-to-open taco spot in Downtown Miami. Following the lead of his other concepts, which serve authentic dishes with a local twist, Centro will use a Mexican pantry as base while riffing on major Miami cultural influences. “I want to incorporate the Cuban, Jewish and Haitian cultures that infiltrate the city and explore how it can play into the vibe here,” says Hales. That means favorites from Wynwood Brewing Company in the housemade salsa and tacos that include roti, schmaltz and even some raw, vegan options. It also means milling corn to make tortillas from scratch and pressing them daily. “It’s quite a process,” he admits, “and of course you have to be consistent every day as you make thousands of them. But it’s important to me to continue the process of sourcing quality items and making everything fresh. That’s not even a media hook. It’s what you do to stay in the game. Not to mention, learning these new tecÚiques, mastering them and opening new concepts is what keeps it exciting.”

Favorite ingredient to work with?

“I use a lot of chilis and garlic, but my secret favorite ingredient is miso paste. It adds the umami and salt profile and helps pss to p bring out the flavor of anyy dish. dish h. I put it in everything, even v n ve mashed potatoes.”

Q:4

Favorite South Florida dish?

“It has to be croquetas— they are just so Miami— alongside a colada, standing at a little window with a friend. That’s the real Miami experience.”

Q:5

Favorite way to spend your day off?

“I love vintage cars. I had a ‘64 Cadillac that I recently sold to Guy Fieri, of all people. Now I have another ’64 Riviera. If I’m off and you can’t find me, chances are I’m under a car in a garage in Doral somewhere. That’s what takes me away from everything.”

“I don’t eat junk food or drink soda; I don’t go to fast food places, but I cannot get enough Pringles. Those things are just incredible, even though that’s not the way I eat.”

GIARDINO’S GOURMET SALADS

The next time you’re in the mood for something healthy, or—let’s be honest— if you simply need a break from the cheesy carb overload that can so easily take over your life, head to Giardino’s. The name isn’t new to South Florida—there are 11 locations—but the newest one has opened right here in Weston. While there are plenty of composed salads to choose from—the spicy Thai Thai is a local favorite—you can also customize your own by choosing from more than 50 fresh ingredients. If you’re looking for something a little heartier, go for a grain bowl, which combines various proteins with fresh vegetables and your choice of rice, quinoa or beans.
