Hot on the heels of the Rio Summer Olympics, ArtBrazil 2016 will hold its fourth annual exhibit in South Florida showcasing the contemporary Brazilian art scene throughout the month of September at venues in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties for the first time, holding separate opening nights in each county. The event brings known artists from Brazil, the US and the rest of the world together along with collectors, spectators and gallery owners and features installation works, photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics and other forms of art that incorporate Brazilian tradition and culture in a modern, contemporary context. Among the 120+ noted Brazilian artists exhibiting are Marcos Amaro, whose work is featured in permanent exhibits at the James L. Knight Center & Conrad Miami; Mariza Formaggini; Felipe Misan and award-winning artist and architect Anna Mallmann (Macy’s “Brazil: A Magical Journey”). One of the most unique aspects of ArtBrazil 2016 is that all artists must be citizens of Brazil. In addition to U.S.based artists, approximately half of the exhibiting artists are coming in from South America. Educational aspects of ArtBrazil 2016 include field trips for over 250 Miami-Dade and Broward public school K-12 students to the exhibits over a four-day period, during which they'll interact directly with ArtBrazil exhibiting artists during question-and-answer sessions, and workshops and events related to the arts and healing and social change via various panel workshops including Eye Contact with Autism. “We’ve supported the ArtBrazil exhibit from the start as a way to give the local community the opportunity to appreciate diverse expressions of Brazilian culture and soul, through the works of a wide range of talented Brazilian artists,” says Hélio Vitor Ramos Filho, ambassador and consul general of Brazil in Miami. “Each year the exhibition has grown in size and stature and we are pleased to renew our support and once again place it on the official calendar of Brazil’s National Day celebration in Florida.” For more information, visit www.artbrazil2016.com.

Katina Taylor shares how she does just that with her annual Camp Katina: Cartwheels to Character and pays tribute to those who help her get it done.

I

can always find happiness and contentment during the times I’m helping others. When I get outside of myself and put my energy and focus on helping other people, I forget my own worries and realize that this is what life should be about. It’s always nice to have someone to pick you up when you are down, inspire you to stay strong when times are tough, and to remind you to focus on the positives.

Ten years ago, I founded Camp Katina: Cartwheels to Character, a gymnastics and life skills program serving young girls ages 6-14 from the Boys and Girls Clubs, Overtown Youth Center and the Urban League. This program could not be possible without so many giving, generous and charitable people in our community. I want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart for helping make a difference in the South Florida Community and the lives of over 600 deserving campers.

Charitable organizations: Dan Marino Foundation, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Jason Taylor Foundation and Camp Katina. How do you make the time to volunteer your services? I am blessed to have a great studio with photographers and support staff who cover me or the events when I can’t personally photograph events. You have been involved with Camp Katina for a decade. Tell us about your experience. Words can never describe the experience of seeing the real difference in all the young ladies from the minute they arrive on the first day to the minute they leave on the last day. Katina’s energy is infectious. Katina’s commitment in making a difference is life changing in the most positive way that we may never see, but it does happen to each camper. That’s something you know is bigger than yourself, and you want to be a part of it. Why is it so important to you to give back to the community? I have always felt that God gave me a talent. It is up to me to know when to give it away. What inspires and motivates you to volunteer year after year? Inspiration and motivation comes from knowing that the seeds Katina plants in the young ladies become the shade tree of life values that they and their families will sit under.

JEFF ENGLISH STORE MANAGER, PUBLIX

How does it feel to give back to the community? Awesome! The more organizations I get involved with, the more I can’t wait until the next one. You have been involved with Camp Katina for a decade.

What inspires and motivates you to keep doing this year after year? The energy from Katina and the generosity from Silvana with West Broward Gymnastics Academy and the other organizations that have helped make Camp Katina so successful for the past 10 years. Publix helps so many charitable organizations in our community. What’s it like to be part of such a giving company? I suggest that everyone think seriously about what they want to be involved in and then contact the Community Foundation of Broward County and they will match them with their passion and the best organization to get involved with.

Katina approached me with the idea of Camp Katina and I was more than happy to take part in the journey. She spoke of Camp Katina with such passion and excitement; it seemed like the perfect opportunity to help out a wonderful person and to give back to the community. Each year, I donate the West Broward Gymnastics Academy facility to Katina and the coaching staff volunteer their time for this event. Our staff are truly passionate about coaching gymnastics and they appreciate the opportunity to coach the girls alongside Katina. She comes in each day with such a high energy and positive spirit. Katina provides more than just a gymnastics camp for these girls. She promotes positive attitudes, body images, and most importantly, encourages the young girls to be strong and confident. She is always so kind and compassionate with the children and you can see she sincerely enjoys interacting with them and coaching them. Katina, the coaches, the volunteers and the girls spend a weekend learning gymnastics, cheerleading, dance and self-love. I believe everyone feels so grateful to be involved in such a delightful program.

or a city that many environmentalists and city planners said should never have been built, Weston has emerged as a carefully designed hometown community for families from around the world. While the residents of the city—more than 68,388, according to statistics compiled in 2013—celebrate the city’s 20th anniversary this month, visionary developers, mayors, businesspeople and citizens lionize its virtues. And there are many to applaud. According to current Mayor Daniel J. Stermer, Weston is a unique place to live because the city truly focuses on families. It provides members of the community with facilities and programming geared specifically toward them. “Whether it’s our worldclass parks system, our nationally recognized bicycle system, the cultural and arts programming through community partners, our home of A-grade schools that the city interacts with safety and security by utilizing the latest technology and equipment, or our houses of worship that meet the needs of our diverse composition of residents,

we have it all,” says Stermer. He adds, “We do everything for the benefit of our residents, yet strive to make their investment in our city appreciate so in years to come, it will be worth more than when they first purchased.” Stermer, along with other city fathers and long-time residents, especially likes the original concept for Weston, for which the developer’s emphasis was placed on the residential aspects over commercial possibilities. “We knew early on that we had to put amenities for residents upfront,” says Patrick Sessions, who served as president of the Weston division of The Arvida Corp., the city΄s original developer. “We focused on parks, athletic clubs, sidewalks, boulevards, tree-lined streets, a band shell, city club and homes that had to meet our specifications. We put residential needs above commercial opportunities.” Sessions and his team wanted to create a community for families with perfectly designed neighborhoods, upscale homes, flawless lawns, and cutesy mailboxes, street lights and plantings. Nothing should be out of place. Not a Celebration, Florida, with a cinematic storybook feel, but a well planned, functioning city that looked great and worked well. “We did 100 houses a year,” Sessions remembers of the early days. “And they were not really high-end at that time; $200,000 was an average price.” (Arvida eventually went on to build 1,000 homes a year in Weston.) Now comprising 15,000 acres, Weston has become one of the best-selling planned communities in the U.S. Today, more than 44.9 percent of its population is of Hispanic or Latino origin, with 51.5 percent of its overall homeowners speaking a language other than

English. “Weston was not so international when we first developed it,” reveals Sessions. “This international element happened after Hurricane Andrew, when people needed to stay for a while while their damaged homes were being repaired. Many ended up buying and moving to Weston permanently. Latins, Central Americans, Nicaraguan friends and families, etc., got this segment of the population going.” Indeed, Weston now has a fascinating and diverse community of people from around the globe who work together for the benefit of all. They are proud of their postcardperfect city and spend the time it takes to keep it beautiful, peaceful and prosperous. “As a child, I never quite appreciated growing up in Weston,” says Elizabeth Pratts, a senior account executive with rbb Communications in Coral Gables. “The movie theater and mall were 15 minutes away, but for a pre-teen still unable to drive, it might as well have been as far away as Disney World. Today, as an adult, I relish visiting home after a long work week in the city. There is a calmness to Weston. Plus, it’s my favorite place to stargaze.” But it wasn’t always that way. The earliest beginnings were anything but peaceful, international and family-oriented.

In a 1991 Sun Sentinel article by John deGroot and Chuck Clark, the question of Weston being built at all was examined at length. Since Weston, the largest housing project ever created in South Florida, was being developed on 10,000 acres of former Everglades brush and swamp, controversy swirled around Arvida and its intentions for many years. The reporters wrote that environmentalists had spent nearly 20 years waging an eco-war against Arvida, claiming that Weston was destroying the finest wetlands outside of the Everglades conservation areas, “endangering South Florida’s water supply and slaughtering a fragile ecosystem.” Arvida hired its own lawyers and lobbyists to fight back and convince the naysayers that they were trying to build a hot new city on land that looked like it could have come straight out of the film Deliverance. They endeavored to convince environmentalists that nothing but good could come from its development. The developer would raise more than a half-billion dollars in special taxes and fees from Weston homeowners after transforming the wetlands into a super city. And proper, eco-friendly development would keep nature and the environment intact. Sessions was astute in countering the en-

vironmental negativity around Arvida’s idea of developing Weston, employing a green consultant named Roy Rogers who became his conscience. Together, they focused on landscaping and parks and developing with the residents’ best interests in mind. They landscaped interchanges, created parks and wide sidewalks, and made building sports facilities a priority. While enduring flack from architects, land planners and environmentalists, Sessions and Rogers went beyond what would make people happy to live in Weston and raise their families. “I grew up in Coral Gables and still live there,” says Sessions of his vision for Weston. “My childhood memories are of sidewalks and parks. We created Weston based on my memories of Coral Gables. There is a lot of that city in Weston.”

Arvida’s “master plan” for the suburban city that Money magazine later touted as one of the top places to live in the U.S. was first envisioned by Arthur Vining Davis, the original owner of Arvida. The Weston land was originally known as Indian Trace. In 1978, with the first of what would be many development plans, the Indian Trace Development of Regional Impact (DRI) was approved, which permitted 25,000 dwelling units to be built, although it was eventually reduced to17,000. In 1981, the Indian Trace Community Development District was created to finance and manage the construction and to maintain water, sewer and water management bodies and arterial roadways. It was governed by a five-member developer appointed Board of Supervisors. The name Indian

Trace was changed to Arvida, and in 1984, the first homes were completed in Windmill Ranch and Country Isles, and Weston became home to its first residents. In November 1991, with more than 5,000 residents in Weston, and the Indian Trace Community Development District 10 years old, residents were given power to make their own decisions by being elected to three of the five seats on the Board of Supervisors. Two years later, other residents were elected to the two remaining seats. So residents had full control of their district. After research, project studies, conversations, unpleasant conflicts and everything else that goes into convincing people that something new can actually be better, Weston developed into a self-sustainable community, then a new city, as the tax dollars generated by the residents inWESTON MAGAZINE

would remain in Weston under the control of and for the use of the residents. Plus, planning and zoning matters would also be decided by the residents. On Sept. 3, 1996, the residents of Indian Trace Community Development district went to the polls. Of those voting, 90 percent voted to incorporate, and the city of Weston was born. The interim city commission had Harry Rosen as interim mayor, and John Flint, Mark Myers and Eric Hersh as interim commissioners. Hersh became mayor in 2001, and was re-elected three times. He felt Weston was a financially powerful city, and a special place to live with a unique form of government. But there were disagreements over everything. “At the beginning we didn’t agree on anything,” says Hersh. “But in the end we quit fighting and agreed. We cooperated and became leaders in the state. We spearheaded November elections, real estate tax exemptions and worked on aspects of life to protect our community. We never acted like a distressed community. And Weston became the premier place in Florida to raise a family.” Yet, like anywhere else, Weston has endured its challenges, among them Hurricane Wilma, financial downturns in the economy, and dry years in general where money needed

FIRST WESTON MAYOR

Harry Rosen

DISCUSSES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF WESTON.

Lawyer Harry Rosen, who was the strong mayor of Miramar, established a procedure that he carried over to his tenure as the first mayor of Weston. He held a weekly meeting with the city manager to keep in the loop with what was going on in the city. “John R. Flint has been the city manager of Weston since the beginning,” says Rosen. “We had a weekly meeting where we discussed what was going on in town. It was very beneficial and has continued to this day.” Rosen still lives in the city and attends

events and participates in lots of the local activity. He sees the population growth as the biggest change during Weston’s 20 years of existence. “Weston has gotten much bigger over the years and there are so many more events to attend,” says Rosen. “Although there are things about Weston that have stayed the same, the population then was much smaller.” Rosen remains a good citizen and leads an active life in Weston.

to be raised. Then, add the merging of diverse cultures that were laying down roots in Weston, and ensuing disagreements forced compromises. Latinos, Asians, Europeans, residents from Pacific Island nations, and other international spots joined Americans in this beautifully planned city. But eventually, most differences were resolved with rational talk that actually helped strengthen real estate values and preserve financial assets. In the end, Weston was the least affected city by the financial downturn. “We always had a good working relationship with the county and the developer, so we continued to work well together,” says Hersh. “Arvida was happy, and Weston residents were happy. Today, Weston remains unique.” Another positive aspect of Weston life was that, with the development of so many parks, clubs and sports fields, the city attracted top jocks in all disciplines. In fact, former Miami Dolphins star Dan Marino was Arvida’s initial hook. The superstar quarterback worked for Arvida as a spokesperson for five years while raising his family in Weston. (The 1999 film Any Given Sunday, starring Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz and Al Pacino, was filmed using Marino’s mansion at the time.) “Dan did a great job for us,” says Sessions. “In the end,

we couldn’t afford his fee, and when we told him, he said he still wanted to stay on.” Other athletes, like former football star John Offerdahl and former Major League Baseball star Jeff Conine, also bought property in Weston because they loved the city and what it had to offer. “I love Weston because it is a great place to raise a family,” says Conine. Sessions, who left Arvida to form his own company in the late 1990s, says he is prouder of Weston than any other city he has developed. He was smart enough to make some sweet deals with prestigious companies that opened businesses and offices in Weston. A major coup was attracting the Cleveland Clinic in 2001, a nationally respected medical institution and hospital. Fifteen years later, Wael K. Barsoum, MD, president of Cleveland Clinic Florida, has no regrets. “We established an expanded presence in Weston with a long-term view of providing worldclass care to the region into the 21st century and beyond, just as Weston was beginning to realize its long-term vision for creating a world-case residential and business community,” he says. “The future looks right as the City of Weston and Cleveland Clinic Florida continue to grow together.” Orthodontist John J. Marchetto, who

practices in the Weston Town Center with Dr. Marissa Cooper, has watched Weston grow into a vibrant community while retaining its small-town roots. “From the landscaping to the architecture, everything has been well planned and maintained to keep a small-town feel,” says Dr. Marchetto, who has lived in Weston for 20 years. “It is a wonderful place to live, raise a family and practice.” Lawyer and resident Andrew B. Yaffa, a partner in Miami’s Grossman, Roth, Yaffa and Cohen law firm, loves living in Weston because of the closeness of the community, the safety, the impeccable beauty beyond the gates, and the quality of life afforded to those who live there. “Nowhere else in Florida can you raise a family with such community support,” says Yaffa. “We have some of the best public schools in the nation and our parks rival any city—anywhere! I commute to Miami for work and despite the time it takes me to drive, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else than Weston.” As a model for other cities in Florida and around the U.S., Weston is still attracting attention. More developers want to share in the glory of Arvida’s suburban nugget. Terra of Miami is developing Botaniko Weston because its president, David Martin, sees

many of the same possibilities that the early developers of Arvida first imagined. He wants to enhance people’s lives by combining great design with the beauty of nature and well landscaped spaces and pocket parks for bike riding, jogging, dog walking, showcasing art and sculpture, even for practicing yoga. Since Weston has already proven itself in many areas, new developments like Botaniko Weston can prosper and complement the original with the right kind of environmentally prudent developing, future planning and open communication within the local government, planners and city fathers. “Weston is a pristinely planned community,” says Martin. “It is a vibrant, evolving city that boasts some of the best schools and parks in South Florida. It is not only one of the most coveted suburban neighborhoods in the region, it’s also a model for other cities to emulate.” inWESTON MAGAZINE

“I like to dress for success. My industry requires flexibility and is casual, but sometimes you have to step it up a notch.” STYLE IN A NUTSHELL:

Casual. I have to be flexible. As a handson developer in South Florida, I can’t dress up or down too much. I move around a lot and spend half my time in the office and the other half on job sites. My style has to be acceptable in a room full of institutional investors from Manhattan and also has to work in the brutal heat of South Florida while meeting with project managers on job sites. GO-TO ENSEMBLE:

7 jeans, Armani sport coat and dress shirt. It works in most situations. WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN…

Bright, colorful loafers. They seem popular these days, but they are not for me. PERSONAL STYLE ICONS:

Architects such as Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and my father, Dan Adache. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP:

My time is limited, and therefore I am a one-stop shopper in most cases. Nordstrom would be my first choice. They have most labels and I can get in and out quickly, which is my goal. CAN’T GET ENOUGH…

Shoes—I ruin them constantly on the job sites. I always try to bring an extra pair, but it rarely happens and I end up destroying a nice pair of shoes after a few weeks of owning them. MOST TREASURED WARDROBE ITEM:

Armani sport coat. I can throw it on if need be in any situation.

“A wise woman once remarked that true style is not about flaunting luxury labels and logos—that being a billboard for a brand is never the height of fashion, style or good taste. I think it’s a shortcut for dressing well and as the luxury market becomes increasingly saturated, looking great without advertising someone else’s initials is even more fun and sophisticated.” STYLE IN A NUTSHELL:

My style is fashion-forward and fearless; a hybrid of sophisticated chic with a definite edge. I gravitate toward clothing and accessories that exude luxe quality and convey a personality statement. GO-TO ENSEMBLE:

Skinny jeans, silky top and heels. WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN…

Socks on a dance floor. Heels or the highway! PERSONAL STYLE ICONS:

Ivanka Trump and Gwen Stefani. Both are goddesses of their domains, and each has her own distinctive style. FAVORITE DESIGNERS & PLACES TO SHOP:

Locally, Neiman Marcus—Cusp has it all! Mix in a little Anthropologie, J. Crew, Zara and Alene Too. But my best finds are always spotted along my travels—fashion is the best souvenir! Go to brands: Rag & Bone, Stella McCartney, Frame, AG, McGuire, Veronica Beard, Alexander Wang, Fendi, Akris, Manolo Blahnik, Stuart Weitzman. CAN’T GET ENOUGH…

These days, it’s hats! Living in Florida, there are never enough occasions to wear them except for sunny-day style, but I still can’t stop coveting and collecting them. Also, glasses. As the days go by, my 20/20 vision isn’t what it used to be. I started finding and collecting cute readers from Anthropologie, EyeBobs.com and See Paris. If you’ve got to wear them, they may as well be fashion-forward. MOST TREASURED WARDROBE ITEM:

“Coming from a cold climate with European influences to living in an American tropical paradise hasn’t changed my style. I still love to wear playful socks and sport jackets; they just need to be lighter.” STYLE IN A NUTSHELL:

Athletic, clean and casual. Having grown up in Canada where it’s always cold, I became accustomed to wearing sport jackets, nice shoes and jeans all year. GO-TO ENSEMBLE:

Cole Haan shoes, Joe’s Jeans and a purple gingham check dress shirt, accompanied by a navy John Varvatos sport jacket with a pocket square (and don’t forget the purple plaid socks to match the shirt!). WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN…

I never wear any jewelry. As an athlete, it just seems to get in the way. PERSONAL STYLE ICONS:

David Beckham always looks like he came off the field, yet ready for a night out; Ryan Reynolds, because he is Canadian and plays a great superhero; and Derek Zoolander—he gave us Blue Steel! FAVORITE DESIGNERS & PLACES TO SHOP:

Boutique stores on Las Olas and Lincoln Road that you can pop into. I’m not a huge fan of shopping malls. Cole Haan for work. Brooks for running. English Laundry and Thomas Pink shirts. John Varvatos, Hickey Freeman and Hugo Boss suits and sport jackets. Nordstrom Rack, Last Call and Zappos.com CAN’T GET ENOUGH:

My socks—I don’t have any solid colored socks; only colorful playful patterns that match my shirts, which are not solid colors, either. MOST TREASURED WARDROBE ITEM:

My Panerai watch — I think a nice watch makes any outfit look more sophisticated. I usually wear it with a rubber watchband, trying to stay sporty.

“Do not let fear of being the oddball scare you; rather, let that be the drive to push you to experiment with new clothing and styles. Remember, an original is more precious than a copy.” STYLE IN A NUTSHELL:

Bohemian edge, meaning that I’m a person that goes with the flow and can be very laid back, but the edge comes from being a strong girl ready to take on each day with style. GO-TO ENSEMBLE:

My go-to outfit is boyfriend jeans paired with a simple but unique top, cool detailed sandals and finished off with a solid-color choker. WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN…

There’s not much I would not wear. I love experimenting with different styles and colors… I see every piece of clothing as an opportunity to grow as an avid fashion lover. However, since I am so fond of clothes, I would not wear designer knockoffs. I respect the industry and designers too much to rip off their artwork. PERSONAL STYLE ICONS:

I gather my eye for fashion from a multitude of celebrities, cultures, and even decades, but my favorite sources of fashion inspiration are Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, early ‘90s street style, and a blogger by the name of Alex Centomo. FAVORITE DESIGNERS & PLACES TO SHOP:

Forever 21, thrift stores, Ron Jon, boutiques, and Urban Outfitters, just to name a few. My favorite labels are Billabong, Levi’s and Vans. CAN’T GET ENOUGH…

For some reason I’ve developed a strong obsession with boyfriend jeans. Maybe it’s because of their comfort or effortless look, but I love them and cannot get enough. MOST TREASURED WARDROBE ITEM:

My most treasured wardrobe item would have to be my thrifted cropped cream sweater. I knew it was a steal when I got it, but never would have guessed how much use would come out of it as well. It has never failed me and carries many memories.

“Being 6 feet tall, I sometimes find it fun to show my legs, and I always gravitate towards leather or suede shorts. I also like a short skirt paired with a fresh button-up men’s shirt. Something about the toughness of leather just makes me feel invincible.”

GO-TO ENSEMBLE:

That’s easy…I love a fitted plain, black or gray tank and dress pants (either a high-waisted wide-leg trouser or straight-leg fitted with a cuff) with a great pair of shoes or boots. I also love a great pair of jeans and a blouse with a pop of color either on my lips, my shoes or my bag, but never all three at once. WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN:

Wild prints…OK, any print, really, or bright colors. PERSONAL STYLE ICONS:

I love Iris Apfel. She personifies what fashion means. Ralph Lauren as a brand and lifestyle is just perfection and true elegance. I do appreciate when people push the envelope. Rihanna does that with her fashion statements, and I love it! FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP:

My Home Fashion Boutique of course is my favorite place to shop. Online I think Polyvore is great, as is Top Shop. As far as my most common labels or brands that are my favorite, I do love Sen, Bella Luxx, Coclico, BCBGMax Azria, Ralph Lauren, Acler, Karolina K, Santika and Rebecca Minkoff. CAN’T GET ENOUGH…

STYLE IN A NUTSHELL:

I was raised by an extremely elegant and sophisticated Canadian mother in Europe and upstate New York and I think that definitely encouraged my fashion “taste buds.” My style is a healthy mixture of the “classic” look with a spin. I like to have a high-fashion element to my look, but I like to deconstruct the image by softening it with denim, maybe a t-shirt or even a pair of Stan Smiths or by adding a little offbeat edge like a hat or statement necklace that will add texture, like African beaded necklaces or large raw stone pieces. My style represents my outlook on life that you should always color outside of the lines if that means being true to oneself.

“I always say fashion found me. Growing up in Jamaica, my mother owned one of the leading manufacturing houses. I remember like it was yesterday, taking afternoon naps under the huge cutting tables as I laid on bolts of fabric. It seemed inevitable I would be a designer.” STYLE IN A NUTSHELL:

I feel my style says I’m sassy, vibrant, and elegant. Women should be empowered by their bodies. I take much pride in maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle and having a body I am proud to be in. I believe style should be a reflection of one’s inner beauty, and that’s the message I want my two girls to always embrace. GO-TO ENSEMBLE:

As an island girl and former Miss Jamaica beauty queen, I always go back to my roots. An easy, breezy sundress always takes me home. WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN…

A pantsuit. PERSONAL STYLE ICONS:

Ciara is my standout girl crush. She always keeps it classy and glamorous, with just the right amount of sexy. She is fearless in fashion and flawless from head to toe. FAVORITE DESIGNERS & PLACES TO SHOP:

Roberto Cavalli is certainly my fashion splurge. His fashion never takes a woman’s curves for granted. His designs always accentuate her best assets, whether it’s her tiny waistline or that sexy shoulder. I admire how flattering and tasteful his collections are. Let’s be honest; Bebe is every girl’s go-to store! Bebe is like your LBD (little black dress). She’s always there when you need her. CAN’T GET ENOUGH…

Miami designer Carmen Alcaraz Gomes was asked to design this Plantation home in a shabby chic motif using muted colors. In the living room, the Oriental rug behind the sofa offers color and sophistication in the same way as the two rectangular pieces of art function to attract attention. Practical yet beautiful furniture comes from Restoration Hardware, Addison House and Artefacto.

Rustic Sophistication

This Plantation home was created to reflect the needs of the Brazilian owners who wanted a mixture of rustic and modern design. By Linda Marx

couple with two young children, two cats, two dogs and a zest for life were seeking a fresh start in Plantation, they hired Carmen Alcaraz Gomes of Cg1 Design in Miami to execute their ideas. Their two-story, 4,500-square-foot home was brand new, modern and square. But the wife wanted shabby chic, and pet- and kid-friendly interiors. And this presented a problem for the designer. “She didn’t want a modern look, because the home had to be welcoming,” says Gomes, an award-winning designer who honed her skills at Ethan Allen. “Since the home was modern, her desires presented a challenge.” The five-bedroom, six-bath home with living room, dining room, family room and kitchen is located in the Hawks Landing development in Plantation. After hours of consulting, it took Gomes about seven months to complete her design project for the owners, who are in the logistics business. The wife asked Gomes to create an interior of shabby chic using muted colors. She wanted nothing flashy. Pet- and kid-friendly materials had to be used in all of the rooms to help keep maintenance short and simple. “She likes the cozy look, but I had to incorporate that into a thoroughly modern interior,” says Gomes. “I used chenille for the sofa, fibers for the

chairs and carpets because they are easily washable, and slipcovers for much of the other furniture.” Gomes says the client was pleasant, but particular. To put together a look that she requested was challenging given the space, its limitations and the children and pets. So Gomes went to visit her client nearly every day during the design process to be sure they were on the same wavelength. “I really got involved with the client,” says Gomes, who was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and speaks both Spanish and Portuguese. “I asked her to give me input all the way through.” One of the changes Gomes made to the bare-spaced interior was the addition of wood panels in several rooms. Enhancing the blank canvas helped create the warmth the wife desired. “I added wood art and rustic fibers but needed to be practical while doing so,” she explains. Gomes respected the architectural characteristics of the home and balanced that with the rustic look. But she had to avoid the easy option of turning the interior into a country spectacle. “I really had to achieve balance, and it was hard to do.” The living room is spacious and open so Gomes made it warm with her use of wood tables and upholstered chairs. She added comfort and preppy looks but didn’t go overboard. “It had to look sophisticated and be practical for everyday living with her family and pets,” says the designer. The dining room was more of a project. By adding the wood panels and a large mirror, she made the space look and feel warm and inviting. She used a rustic table and modern chairs and buffet together with raw silk drapery. “The wife likes to cook, and they entertain frequently, so this room is popular and used often,” says Gomes. “The walls are darker beige tones.” The family room is the most used space in the house and reflects the cottage aesthetic with a zip of color. Gomes added a red wall which makes a statement and allows the designer to put some color in the room and utilize her sense of style. Again, Gomes designed the space inWESTON MAGAZINE

OPPOSITE: The daughter’s bedroom reflects her love for vintage films. A black and white picture of actress Audrey Hepburn dominates the room because the daughter loves Breakfast At Tiffany’s, one of Hepburn’s most famous movies. Custom linen drapery is trimmed in pink. with a large sectional in beige with slipcovers so the family can lounge effortlessly while watching their favorite sport of soccer on television. The practical and functional materials used allow family members to sit, lounge or crash without worrying about ruining them. “It’s a beautiful room and all the family members love it,” she says. “They spend hours here enjoying international soccer games.” Repeating the burst of color, she created a green wall in the guest bedroom. The furniture and furnishings are from West Elm, Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn, so the guests feel welcome and at home when they stay with the family. “The parents of the couple often stay in this room,” says Gomes. “With the bold color combined with easy living pieces they feel like they are part of the family scene,” says Gomes. “The green wall is a nice touch.” The son’s bedroom was created with his sports passion in mind. It reflects every detail of his athletic life. A soccer player, he likes to surround himself with the sport. So Gomes found a large colorful photo of a soccer player and also created a wallboard with metal displays that feature soccer balls. “Then I attached the balls to give it an arty look,” she says. “It serves a specific purpose to highlight the son’s talents as a soccer player. Each ball is signed.” The daughter’s room is also a metaphor of her personality and interests. A lifelong movie lover, especially old, glam tales like Breakfast

at Tiffany’s, it needed to reflect the vintage sophistication of that New York era when women dressed in white gloves and pretty outfits. While Gomes designed the room in pink and white, she also found a striking black and white picture of Breakfast at Tiffany’s star Audrey Hepburn, which she placed over the bed. “I made the room look romantic with custom linen drapery trimmed in pink, a full feminine linen bed, and mirror.” The designer even added a shiny throw pillow with a kitten motif which adds texture, animation and sophistication to the charming decor. Even the first-floor powder room looks straight out of a film. Gomes added beige print wallpaper to add texture but kept it casual without going overboard on the shabby chic look. “The wallpaper is country without being country,” the designer notes. “It is another version of beige and certainly is not shabby chic.” Despite the differences in the wife and the designer’s ideas, they meshed perfectly in the execution of the design, thanks to the open communication throughout the process. “I was delighted with the outcome,” says Gomes. “When I saw how happy the owners were as they saw the entire house come alive, I was thrilled. As a designer, I went inside of their heads and heard their live stories. It helped me achieve our goal, which was the ideal environment that they had envisioned.” Their happiness is what gave Gomes the most satisfaction. inWESTON MAGAZINE

colombian fever The new El Colombiano Restaurant & Bakery gives diners an authentic taste of Colombian cuisine. By Jennifer Agress

I

n neighborhood Weston, we love it when a new part of the world pops up right here in our own backyard. So when El Colombiano Restaurant & Bakery, an authentic Colombian breakfast and lunch spot, opened in late January 2016, we were excited. Located right on North Commerce Parkway, in the Comfort Suites Plaza, the restaurant was started by husband-and-wife duo Adriana Michelsen and Bernardo Grau. As delicious as it is traditional, this locale is a testament to the couple’s childhood growing up in Bogota, Adriana’s lifelong passion for cooking, and of course, the delicious flavors of Colombian cuisine. Born and raised in Bogotá, Adriana and Bernardo first moved to South Florida nearly two decades ago, where they eventually found a home in quiet, family-friendly Weston. “We first moved to Miami, in the neighborhood of Key Biscayne, but we had small kids at the time and they needed to go to school,” Adriana remembers. “Everyone told us that the schools were great up here, so we decided

112

SEPTEMBER 2016

to move. We ended up making a lot of friends and fell in love with the area, so we’ve been in Weston ever since.” Much to their surprise, moving to Weston brought this husband-and-wife duo, their two children, and now their two grandchildren more than a good school district; it brought them a piece of the country they once called home. Here in Weston, Adriana and Bernardo found a vast Colombian population with whom they shared customs, history, cultural understanding and the cornerstone of all celebrations in South America, an appreciation for the same traditional Colombian food they grew up eating. “There is a large Colombian population, but before us, there was only one Colombian restaurant,” says Adriana. “We saw the need for another one here in Weston, and I wanted to open it. So I saw this opportunity and said, ‘Why not?’ Since then, we’ve liked it very much.” And with that, El Colombiano Restaurant and Bakery was born. It originally opened as a place for breakfast and lunch, and just

recently it started offering dinner on the weekends. It serves breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to noon, lunch from noon to 8 p.m. daily, and stays open for dinner until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Go there on a weekday, in the early morning or afternoon, and you’ll find the local business crowd grabbing coffee, Colombian breakfast or lunch before work or on their lunch break. Fast-forward to the weekends, and El Colombiano Restaurant & Bakery is all about meals with family and friends. Because in Colombia, when it’s time to eat, you’re always surrounded by family and friends. So, what do you eat when you get there? Get “Cocina Criolla,” a style of cuisine common in Colombia that reflects a fusion of American, African and European cuisine. If you’re like most businesspeople in Weston and head there for breakfast before your workday, start with a cappuccino and a basket of Pan de Bono, or homemade bread stuffed with farmer’s cheese. For something more filling, kick off your day with Sencillo, a mix of rice, beans and eggs, paired with a cheese arepa. If you’re there for lunch, munch on Chicharrón, traditional pork rind, or order the Plátano Maduro con Queso y Bocadillo, a plate of sweet plantains with guava and cheese. Bandeja Paisa, which has rice, beans, meat, egg, pork rind, avocado, sweet plantains and a small arepa, is one of the most popular lunch items on the menu. The EL COLOMBIANO burger—which is topped with caramelized onion, tomato, cilantro, a fried egg, Colombian potatoes and guacamole—is a

114

SEPTEMBER 2016

definite must-try, but if you ask Adriana, her favorite lunch item is ajiaco. A traditional dish from her childhood in Bogotá, this chicken and potato soup comes with a side of avocado and has fast become a staple on the restaurant menu for both lunch and dinner. Speaking of the latter, El Colombiano Restaurant & Bakery offers select dinner options of global cuisine, which pairs special dishes like pasta and fish with the traditional restaurant menu. The menu aside, however, at the heart of this Weston restaurant is a passion for food and cooking that its owner has nurtured for years. “In my house growing up, there was always food. Everyone came to our house for the holidays, or in general, because they knew that my mom was always cooking something good,” Adriana remembers. “And my mom loved it, so she was always inviting people

over. I try to bring that mindset into the restaurant here.” And when you look at their success so far, like the fact that they’re packed for breakfast and lunch every day, it’s easy to see how that mindset has worked. “We are focused on everyone leaving the restaurant happy and planning to come back,” Adriana says of El Colombiano Restaurant & Bakery. “All of our customers are regulars, and people that come in every single day for lunch. We spoil our guests, we change anything they want, and we make food anyway they want it. Everyone has to leave happy. And when they’re here, they do.” El Colombiano Restaurant & Bakery, 2221 North Commerce Parkway, Weston, 954-451-5200; www. elcolombianorestaurant.com.

Volvo S90, V90, and XC90 Volvo’s new flagships: so stylish you may forget how safe they are.

By Steve Siler

E

veryone knows Volvo. Or at least they knew Volvo. For most of Volvo’s history, its cars have been seen as peerlessly safe, but as sexy as a cargo crate. Starting this year, however, Volvo is proving that its cars can do more than ensure the well-being of their occupants, first with the 2016 XC90 crossover and soon, the S90 sedan and V90 wagon. Together, Volvo’s flagship “90” models bring more luxury, elegance, technology—and yes, safety—than any Volvos ever, while wrapping it all in styling that’s as sensuous as it is Swedish.

2016 VOLVO XC90

Volvo’s full-line revolution started at the top with its largest model, the 7-passenger XC90 crossover. Based on a state-of-the-art, scalable architecture (also shared with the S90 and V90), the XC90 is larger and more spacious yet lighter and much more efficient. It also debuted Volvo’s slinky new design language, which is characterized by long, broad hoods, clean sheetmetal, and signature details. Most of the XC90’s forms are generally rectilinear, but close inspection reveals few truly straight lines and even fewer right angles, so rather than looking boxy, it appears broad-shouldered. Body jewelry is minimal but effective, including concave chrome grille vanes, “Thor’s Hammer” headlamps, and skinny LED taillamps tracing the edges of the body. Sporty R-Design and off-road packages are available for showier types, but even the base XC90 arrives dressed to impress.

118

SEPTEMBER 2016

The tasteful restraint mantra continues inside, where muted décor imbues the cabin with nearly Zen-like calmness. Dash and door panels combine low-gloss, soft touch materials with swathes of aluminum, wood and gloss black trim. Most controls are handled via voice controls, steering wheel buttons, or a logical, portrait-oriented screen interface, and what few hard buttons remain are contained in a small bank below the latter. Knurled metal switches may remind you of fine etched crystal each time you start the engine, adjust the volume, or switch drive modes. Spring for the range-topping T8 and the gearshift is rendered in actual etched crystal. And Volvo’s longstanding mastery of seat ergonomics (a little-known Volvo strength) blesses each outboard seat with perfect support, whether or not one splurges on the sexy contoured sport seats. Folks who associate luxury automobiles with V-8s and V-12s may be surprised that the XC90 uses only four-cylinder engines, but these

high-tech four-bangers are fully up to spec, boasting 250 horsepower in the turbocharged XC90 T5 and 316 horsepower for the turbocharged and supercharged T6 model. If that’s not enough, the T8’s standard plug-in hybrid powertrain yields 400 total horsepower, along with an all-electric range of about 12 miles. Fuel efficiency, as you might expect, is impressive. Alas, pricing also takes Volvo to new heights, starting in the mid$40Ks to more than $100K for the exclusive T8 “Excellence.” That’s bona fide luxury vehicle pricing, to be sure, but the XC90 is a bona fide luxury SUV, one that’s deservedly won dozens of awards from the automotive industry. Oh yeah, and it’s safe.

2017 VOLVO S90/V90

Lovely as it is, the XC90 is not Volvo’s sole flagship. This fall, the 2017 S90 sedan joins the XC90 atop the Volvo range, and the V90 wagon arrives next Spring to complete the trifecta. In look and feel, the S90 and V90 are very much aligned with the XC90, sharing a vast number of the parts you can see and even more that you can’t. That said, with their lower posture and leaner-looking body sides, the S90 and V90 wear Volvo’s new design language even better. The V90 wagon pushes the look to the very edge with unique LED taillamps that zig-zag down the pillar and into the tailgate. The sedan model is somewhat unsurprising; for most luxury auto brands, flagship models take the form of proper sedans even if their SUVs are equally luxurious. And we’re particularly happy with Volvo’s decision to bring the large, proper wagon to the U.S. With most of Europe’s great wagons kept out of reach from U.S. customers due to apparent lack of interest in such cars here, it’s nice to see a

proud and unapologetic wagon appear. And who better than Volvo, with its long history of swank stay-ways, to bring such a thing? Dynamically, the S90 and V90 are outstanding. While the XC90 can hardly be described as tippy, the ground-hugging S90 and V90 feel even more buttoned down, exhibiting direct, precise steering and well-managed body motions without sacrificing a creamy ride. Initially, both will be offered with front- or all-wheel drive with a choice of the same 250-hp T5 or 316-hp T6 engines as the XC90, with a T8 Plug-in hybrid expected later. Super-fast “Polestar” models may appear after that, and a “Cross Country” version of the V90 wagon— basically a V90 with some added ground clearance and ostensible off-road prowess—is also expected. Volvo has priced the S90 at roughly $48,000 to start, with the fancified T6 Inscription model with all-wheel drive available at $67,000. Don’t be surprised to see an even more premium take on the S90 when the T8 plug-in arrives. Pricing for the V90 will be known closer to that vehicle’s arrival next year, but don’t expect it to cost much more than its four-door counterpart.
