Head east to the shimmering waterfront this summer.

We invite you to visit 15th Street Fisheries for the freshest seafood and a waterfront experience in an authentic Fort Lauderdale marina. The Fisheries is situated directly inside the city's most famous nautical landmark, Lauderdale Marina, and provides a superior complement of fine food and fun along the waterway near the 17th Street Causeway drawbridge just north of Port Everglades inlet to the ocean. The Fisheries is a consistent winner in numerous readers polls, and for good reason. Enjoy lunch or dinner downstairs at Fisheries Dockside, feed the giant tarpon from our docks, stay for dinner upstairs in our waterfront dining rooms, and be a part of the best “happy hour on the Intracoastal Waterway!

ThaT TiTle could describe a loT of Things right now—most notably the weather. and because the weather is warming up, it’s time to lighten up. in this issue of inWeston, we not only go light, but also bright: with fashion that heralds the arrival of the season, beautifully captured by photographer gio alma. and you can get it all in your own backyard—hooray! Then, having honored moms that rock in our last issue, with father’s day coming up next month we were excited to do the same for four devoted dads. each of our “Kings of cool” has his own special rituals with his kids that not only keep the bond between them tight, but also are helping create a lifetime of lasting memories; you can read all about ‘em beginning on page 50. and on the topic of dads, we’ve put together our annual father’s day gift guide, starting on page 66, with ideas for every kind of dad, from the fashion lover to the tech geek. and because this is the time of year that is traditionally the most popular for weddings—although that isn’t necessarily true here in south florida—we’ve included a wedding primer guide with advice and tips to begin the planning if you’ve got a ceremony in your future. last but not least, our cover girl, Maria Menounos, seems to always be juggling a number of projects, but her latest, The everygirl’s guide to diet and fitness, is right on time for summer. in the book, which will be available June 3rd, Menounos shares the diet and lifestyle tips that helped her lose 40 pounds, along with recipes and workouts meant for real people with real lives—not just celebrities. because when it comes to spending summer in south florida, no one wants to be hot ‘n heavy. head to page 78 for the interview. enjoy the issue.

Jesse Bernheim

Even

Ground By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Jesse Bernheim and his partner Robert Dolinsky work tirelessly to help clients across the country win big.

26

magazine.com

When Jesse Bernheim, founding partner at Plantation’s Bernheim & dolinsky LLC, first began law school, he wasn’t sure exactly what kind of law he wanted to pursue. “i knew i wanted to study the law, and i also knew i wanted to be on the consumer side,” he recollects. “i thought it was important to help even the playing field between consumers and insurance companies and large corporations.” And that’s exactly what Bernheim, along with his partner, robert dolinsky—whom he met while attending law school at university of miami—has been doing at the firm they jointly opened 10 years ago. While the firm handles a number of different legal cases, from civil litigation matters such as car accidents and slip-and-falls to insurance litigation and legal malpractice, most recently it has focused on pharmaceutical and medical product liability, often leading to mass tort litigation. “i began my career representing people who were injured in car accidents and slip-and-falls, and while we still take on quite a few of those cases, we currently represent many clients who are dealing with the repercussions of

defective pharmaceutical products,” remarks Bernheim. “We were very successful in obtaining our first settlement, which was a large mass tort, and it has continued to grow from there.” for example, the firm is currently handling litigation for those patients who have been affected by the stryker hip replacement recall, and Bernheim has been tapped as lead counsel in the south florida stryker Litigation in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. “We were the first firm to file lawsuits in the state of florida,” he notes. “There were a handful of south florida doctors that put in around 1,000 of these hips. The failure rate is as high as 80 percent, and some doctors have said that 100 percent of them will eventually corrode.” By helping to bring attention to this serious matter and handling hundred of cases nationwide, Bernheim received the distinct honor of a special appointment by u.s. district Court Judge donovan frank in minnesota as state Court Liaison to the stryker hip mdL. Bernheim knows how fortunate he is to be so busy, and he acknowledges that the firm hit the ground running. “We had a large amount of clients that came with us when we opened, and we began resolving cases right away,” he shares. “our staff and office space have grown at a great pace, and we’re really enjoying the work.” evidence of such growth is witnessed in the firm’s three other offices around the country—two in Kentucky, one each in Boston and the d.C. area—which helps represent clients on a national level. But thanks to technology, Bernheim doesn’t have to travel too much, something he considers a real luxury. “i’m a family man. i like to be home with my wife and kids enjoying the south florida lifestyle,” he says. “We like to be outdoors on the water, playing sports, etc.” Bernheim’s wife grew up in Weston, and they both know, “There’s simply no better place to raise kids in south florida.” despite the adversarial nature of his work, he enjoys it tremendously. “every day brings a new experience, a new challenge. i love what i do, and feeling the satisfaction of being able to help people and make a difference in their lives gives me a tremendous amount of motivation each day to get up and do it all again.” Bernheim & dolinsky, LLC is located at 8151 Peters rd., #3200, in Plantation and can be reached at 954.962.4224 or visit bernheimdolinsky.com.

Jeannette Romeu

A Study in

Contrasts By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Whether playing classical concertos, jazz standards or performing as her alter ego Galaxy Girl, Jeannette Romeu continues to reinvent herself time and time again.

28

magazine.com

Jeannette Claudine Romeu has been playing the piano since she was three years old, and it shows. Watch any of her performances, be it at Birdland, the decades-old iconic jazz club in new York City, or closer to home at the Weston hills Country Club, and it is quickly apparent that the piano is a natural extension of Romeu. she plays effortlessly, with grace and passion. “i’ve been playing since i was a little girl,” she says. “i’m one in a long line of musicians, conductors and composers that dates back five generations.” to wit, both her father and great uncle have amassed myriad musical credits, including a number of nat King Cole albums like the Classic singles and en español, and her family has also been linked to the havana symphony orchestra, the Grammy-award-winning Cuban latin Jazz band, irakere, and the iconic Cuban cabaret and club, tropicana. “music has always been a part of my life. even when i was studying medicine and science in college, it was always there,” she recollects. Romeu soon figured out that those subjects weren’t for her

and quickly changed course to earn a bachelor’s degree from university of miami’s Frost school of music. and next year she’s returning to school to earn her master’s from the Julliard school. “i love the process of educating myself and it’s something that my entire family has always taken very seriously.” Romeu’s love of learning extends beyond the classroom as well. Branching out from her classically trained roots, she is also involved in the electronic music scene—or edm, as those in the know call it. there, Jeannette Romeu is replaced by her alter ego, Galaxy Girl. “i moved into electronica when i saw it becoming wildly popular,” she remarks. “i noticed the younger generation became very attracted to it; they would lose themselves in it and experience pure joy and happiness while listening to the beats and dancing along. i wanted to help them find that joy and forget about their daily problems for just a moment. Plus, it’s important to keep evolving,” she adds. “even though i studied classical music for many years, then moved on to jazz, i knew there was something else i needed to learn, so i began exploring the role i could play in the electronica scene. now, i deejay and produce dance music, often improvising on the spot and adding my voice or other instruments over the tracks.” she has performed around the world as Galaxy Girl, including many shows at miami’s ultra music Festival. Romeu also performs via avatar on secondlife.com, a website that allows her to deejay live for fans around the world by using a 3d animation program. While it seems her latest endeavors may have taken Romeu far from her roots, that couldn’t be further from the truth. she has recently been tapped to become a steinway artist, an honor she greatly appreciates. “to be invited to become part of the steinway family as a jazz concert pianist is incredible, and i’m so fortunate to be able to count myself among them.” as she continues to hone her craft and share her talent around the world, Romeu couldn’t be happier. “music has become my life,” she admits, “and i wouldn’t have it any other way.” For more information on Jeannette Romeu, visit jeannetteclaudineromeu.com or galaxygirl.tv.

It’s been a long road back from the real estate bust of 2008, but Kitty Hamilton, a realtor with Keller Williams, says the market is on the upswing. “We’re experiencing historically low interest rates, and it’s definitely a seller’s market,” she says. Still, she acknowledges, people aren’t quick to forget the past. “Buyers and sellers are not putting themselves over budget; they’re definitely proceeding with caution.” But that’s just the locals. The same cannot be said for investors and international buyers, who are scooping up South Florida properties—and paying in cash—at impressive rates. “Between the low inventory and cash buyers who don’t depend on bank loans, it’s a tight market,” she says. All the more reason that now is a perfect time to put your home on the market. “There’s an influx of buyers who short-sold their homes after the bubble who can now qualify for a mortgage. Plus, there are still incentives available to first-time homebuyers. All of this creates more buyers than we have homes.” So what’s a buyer to do? Call an experienced realtor. Tame That Just Air blow dry sAlon opens in weston.

Mane

Summer is here, and every woman knows what that means. Along with getting bodies bikini-ready, it’s time to figure out a way to tame the mane (read: battle the humidity). To the rescue: Just Air. Following the success of their first location in Fort Lauderdale, owners Nicole Carner and Brooke Gettler decided to head west. As with most blow dry bars, the salon specializes in straightforward 45-minute styling sessions—you can be in and out in the course of a lunch break. With a flick of their talented wrists, stylists will tame your tresses into one of the salon’s signature styles, like Just Straight, Just Waves, Floating on Air, or Just Curls. Basic blowouts cost just $35, and a variety of upgrades—updos, scalp massages, braids, Moroccan oil treatments and hair extensions—are available for an additional cost. Other fun options: bulk buys in groups of four, eight and 12 and monthly memberships, ranging from four to 12 Air Passes a month to a VIP yearly membership that includes 48 blowouts. Just Air is located in the Country Isle shopping center, at 1370 Weston Rd., Weston. To make an appointment, call 954.999.5675. 32

Weston’s MidtoWn Athletic club offers one-of-A-kind fitness trAining.

Small group training is the name of the game these days, and Weston’s Midtown Athletic Club is leading the way. A recent study showed that 43 percent of American health club members prefer working out in a trainer-led group setting. Midtown general manager Massimo Policastro knows why, pointing toward the social impact created when working out in a team environment. “In addition to being less expensive [than oneon-one training], group training offers several opportunities throughout the week to take a class,” he added. Thanks to the club’s alliance with the Italian company Technogym, it’s become the first health club in Florida to use the Omnia Training System, a circular jungle-gym type apparatus that welcomes up to eight participants of varying fitness levels for a simultaneous yet personalized workout. Omnia-certified coaches—including John Sinclair, the club’s director of fitness and one of Life Fitness’ “Top 10 Personal Trainers to Watch”— lead small groups through a wide array of exercises focused on increasing strength, endurance, stability, flexibility, coordination and speed for a total body workout. Midtown Athletic Club is located at 2300 Royal Palm Blvd, Weston; call 954.384.2582 or visit midtown.com/clubs/weston-athletic-tennis-club for more information. 34

Pastel slip dress? Check. Killer shades and new skincare regimen? Check and check. With Spring in full swing, I’m shaking matters up in both my wardrobe and beauty routines, because I’m a zealous believer that this is a season for change and rebirth. I know, I know: how cliché of me—but I’ll take any excuse to try and buy novel pretty things. Here’s what I’m coveting right now (PSST: Many of these goodies are swoonworthy Mother’s Day gift ideas, too). (1 & 2) SHADY BUSINESS: Miami-based design duo Eric Domège and Christian Roth of Christian Roth eyewear create sunnies that are both quirky and classic. These two pairs have “cool” in the bag. (3) PUMPED-UP KICKS: There’s no question that offbeat sneakers are experiencing a hot and heavy fashion moment. These Valentino kicks take my sneaker game to the next level. Watch your back, Air Jordans! (4) JET SET ESSENTIAL: I’ll be cruising to the Caribbean this month and I never leave home without my Tory Burch scarf. What can I say? I’m a glutton for a charming print. (5) GOOD TIMING: Men’s watches make me weak in the knees, and this Bulgari Octo collection timepiece is unequivocally haute. (6) SLINKY SHEATH: Aside from having clear straps, this DKNY slip dress has major sex appeal. The open V-back adds some extra oomph. (7) CROSS MY HEART: Reasons for loving a Louis Vuitton long-strapped crossbody bag: The crook of your arm remains delightfully unencumbered, and your hands can be free of handles. In other words, you hold a cocktail with aplomb. Cheers to that! (8 & 9) SKIN TIGHT: This month, I’m making major strides in taking care of my complexion and wrinkles. How so? I’m moisturizing with Clarins day and night creams, plus I added volume to my cheeks thanks to Juvéderm Voluma XC injectable gel fillers from Dr. Andrea Trowers Dermatology, which last up to two years. Take that, laugh lines!

Her Amazing

Adventure Adding to her already full and frenzied career in TV, film, magazines, and even the WWE, Maria Menounos takes on reality TV and releases her second self-help book on fitness just in time for summer. By Linda Marx

For the daughter oF greek immigrants who didn’t speak english until the third grade, then later worked as a janitor cleaning Boston nightclubs, maria menounos has the midas touch. she is a reality star on the oxygen network’s tuesday night docu-series, Chasing maria menounos, the upbeat co-host with mario Lopez of extra, an actress, author, journalist, entrepreneur, former contestant on dancing with the stars, and sometime pro wrestler for world wrestling entertainment, inc. (wwe). in addition, the Los angeles-based fireball is now promoting her new book, the everygirl’s guide to diet and Fitness (random house), the second self-help topic in her everygirl series. this time she lays out a nine-step plan for losing weight quickly, tips and tricks for getting fit, and a lifelong plan for good health and well-being. “i have so many women approach me and ask how i lost 40 pounds and kept it off, or how i stay fit in general,” says menounos. “i figured a book was the best way to help them.” 44

she’s also working on afterbuzz tV, an online broadcast news network she founded last year. it was conceived from her longtime hobby of breaking down episodes of a series or post-game wraps. the network is dedicated to producing live and recorded after-show webcast and podcast content for all types of tV programs. menounos says afterbuzz tV now receives more than 20 million weekly downloads from 75 countries; its success spawned her digital media network, Black entertainment Live!, which is totally devoted to africanamerican news. there’s more: she’s also the host and executive producer of the digital series Conversations with maria menounos, featuring in-depth one-on-one chats with stars and well-known personalities. For this series, she partners with telepictures Productions. and soon, menounos will likely begin a new project to replace her co-host role on extra. her contract ends this year, and according to new reports, she won’t be returning. although she declines to discuss specifics about what transpired at extra, menounos is looking forward to new opportunities.

“We like to go to Chili’s down the street, drink some beer and have nachos,” Menounos says of her evenings after work. discussing her favorite TV shows—and seem like your average American girl, she is wildly different from the average homemaker. Remember when she hosted Extra in a teeny-weeny bikini after losing a bet on the New England Patriots when they played second fiddle to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI? (The set was outdoors on New York’s Times Square and the temperature was in the 40s.) Or New Year’s 2012 when she caused widespread buzz over a bikini malfunction while playing football with Undergaro in Miami Beach? Crowd-pleasing antics like these do nothing but put her name in lights—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. TV hosts are made and broken by ratings. And these days, emotionally charged reality shows do the same. “Maria is ambitious, unconventional and incredibly funny,” says Rod Aissa, senior vice president of original programming and development for Oxygen Media. “She’s a modern woman at a crossroads in her life and trying to decide what’s next.” To dig deeper, Oxygen TV viewers will see that she is fearless and confident, leading a life she designed for herself. This includes confronting obstacles head on in several segments. For example, her upcoming June 8 birthday is very significant. What begins as a party evolves to reveal some of the realities of getting older. It also leads her to rethink the manner in which she lives her life, and gives viewers a chance to see how she handles emotional and difficult issues. Born in Medford, Mass., the girl with the great smile, big personality and winning stage presence grew up attending church, working at Dunkin’ Donuts and competing in teen beauty contests. In 1996, she got a taste of showbiz glamour by winning the title of Miss Massachusetts Teen USA. She then competed for Miss Teen USA, placing in the top 15. In 2000, the year she graduated from Emerson College, Menounos was the first runner up for Miss Massachusetts USA. 46

Such a schedule would arguably cause the most ambitious among us to collapse, but the heavy load gives Menounos the incentive to achieve more and do it well. “A normal day for me is to get up, squeeze in a workout, and review interviews and news while in hair and makeup,” says Menounos, who will turn 36 in June. “Then I hit Extra, where Mario and I do our interviews and standups. Later, I am on the phone doing research and bookings. By evening, I’m working from my laptop. I usually end the night watching all of my favorite shows with Kev and the dogs and fall asleep by midnight.” Yes, Menounos can also be a down-home, giggly girl who hangs with her guy and cuddles with her dogs. She has been dating her producer-director-writer boyfriend, Keven Undergaro, for 16 years, but has no plans in the works for marriage. In fact, the subject is a bone of contention on her Oxygen reality show, which is an “authentic” inside look at Menounos, Undergaro and her retired parents, Costas and Litsa. They all live together with four dogs: Apollo, a white German shepherd; Baby and Benny, adorable bichons; and Winnie, a mini poodle. On the show, Maria’s parents press her to please get married and have children like a “normal” Greek girl. But while Menounos may enjoy many normal activities—sports, movies, playing with pets, drinking beer and

After her junior year, Menounos, who was studying broadcast journalism and film, was hired as a reporter for Channel One News. She traveled around the world covering major events and serious stories. Her experience reporting on the AIDS virus in South Africa inspired her to start the non-profit Take Action Hollywood, whose mission is to utilize the power of the entertainment industry to educate, empower and raise social awareness. She also reported on the 2001 earthquake in El Salvador the same year she moved to Los Angeles. But Hollywood quickly captured her interest. In 2002, Entertainment Tonight hired her as a correspondent, a role that saw her covering movies, music and fashion. The gig led to co-hosting for ET on MTV and VH1, giving her more show biz exposure. In 2005, Menounos left most of her hosting to concentrate on a career in acting. She had filmed a few TV shows, like Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, and several segments of One Tree Hill (2004-2005), but she wanted to do more. She made her screen debut as a sexy nurse in the sci-fi action film Fantastic Four. But her love for TV came back into play the following year when she joined ET’s rival show Access Hollywood as a special correspondent. At NBC, Menounos was able to mix her hard news experience with Hollywood as a correspondent for Nightly News, the Today Show and Dateline. All of these jobs have given her the chance to interview fascinating people, increase her understanding of pop culture and travel to new places. By 2011, when Menounos joined Extra, the energetic host was a household name, having hosted and worked in so many arenas, including some of her hilarious fling-in-the-ring antics at WWE. Through it all, she has discovered that there is little she can’t do, including finding time to chill. Her visits to Miami have been educational and fun because she loves immersing in the diverse culture. “I love the

healthy energy Miami seems to convey,” says Menounos of the melting pot mentality. “Between the sun and the beaches, I always want to be active when I’m there. The nightlife is fun, too, and that never hurts.” After her busy days, Menounos looks forward to evening cuddles in front of the TV with her boyfriend and the dogs, or hanging out in neighborhood restaurants. “We like to go to Chili’s down the street from us, drink some beer and have nachos,” she says of a typical date night. “Or sometimes we like sushi with beer. We usually save movies until weekend mornings to beat the crowds.” She still loves to travel, opting for warm and beautiful locales when she has a choice. “I like anywhere that is sunny, or where I can relax and not think,” she laughs. “I need a safe place that has no computers, phones or Internet. That works for me. I rarely get to vacation, but when I do, this is the best.” Just don’t expect this workaholic woman to change that much. If she does take a few days break, it is only to rest up for her next big gig. And for that announcement, stay tuned.

These South Florida dads juggle busy careers and full family lives, but continue to put their kids first. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

PETER GLADSTONE

Partner at Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. Dad to Jaron, 21, Blayke, 20, and Lexi 13 “Parenting has taught me everything—that is truly imPortant—there is to know. the day i became a parent was the happiest day of my life. there’s a love you don’t know exists until you feel it through your children.” QUALITY TIME: “my kids are actually old enough now [where i can] enjoy them as people. rather than finding ways to entertain them, we can enjoy each other’s company. two of my kids are in college now, and in fact i just returned from Wisconsin visiting my older daughter, with my younger daughter in tow. they are really good company, and we had a great time. We went shopping and explored the local farmer’s market. We enjoy good food together, so we have some nice meals out as well.” ALL IN THE FAMILY: “i see myself—both the lighter side and the more serious side—in all of my children. all three are very sensitive, which can be both a blessing and a curse. it’s a blessing because you want them to have compassion for others and be empathic, but you don’t want them to completely sacrifice their own feelings, needs and wants in their relationships. my kids see me working hard for my clients, but the fact that i know when to take time for myself and nurture my own relationships is incredibly important, and i hope that is something i am imparting to them through my actions.” OVERCOMING OBSTACLES: “i am constantly trying to find the fine line between friend, confidante and parent, while maintaining that parent-child relationship. it’s an important piece of the puzzle as you transition from having young children to adult children. i try to find the balance between letting them know they’re being disciplined, but also not pulling rank and just imposing my will. i want them to listen to me because we have a mutual respect for one another. i’ve found i can guide them much more effectively with a gentle touch than an iron fist.” THE BIG PICTURE: “i hope my children will achieve the ultimate goal—happiness—and find a purpose in life that they are truly passionate about, no matter what that may be.”

LARRY CARRINO

Managing Partner/President of Brustman Carrino Public Relations Dad to Benjamin Lawrence, 2 “With a job like mine—which requires a full day and lots of nights—learning how to balance my time is my biggest challenge. The best way I have figured out to tackle this problem is to limit my own behaviors, including living on my phone or emails and embracing the reality that unless something requires my attention, my ‘off time’ has to be mine and my family’s.” QUALITY TIME: “Benjamin loves to run around and be outside and has an overabundance of energy, so we try to avoid being in the house or sitting around. He loves the park and is learning how to maneuver the jungle gyms. I look forward to when he’s a little older and I can take him out for real meals and movies. I sing to him all the time, do voices and read to him constantly.” ALL IN THE FAMILY: “I think he’s so much more my wife than me right now, but if there’s anything that’s totally me it would be his love for volume—crying out, making noise, etc. I don’t have a mute button and I’m not sure he does either!” OVERCOMING OBSTACLES: “I’m learning how to be more patient and trying to be a loving but mindful disciplinarian. I want to raise a ‘good boy’ and know that discipline will play a major part of that. I also need to always push myself to stay engaged, even when I’m tired from work and could use just 10 minutes of silence.” LESSONS LEARNED: “Before having Benjamin, what I thought it meant to be a parent was just the tip of the iceberg, but it’s infinitely more challenging and more beautiful than I thought it would be.” THE BIG PICTURE: “I want Benjamin to be happy with who he is. I hope people describe him as loving, intelligent, compassionate and sensitive. Careers and such are secondary for me. I want him to have a healthy self-esteem and be comfortable in his own skin with his own quirks. This so informs and influences your life as a young adult and beyond, especially the decisions you make and those you let into your life.”

JOHN D’ERI

President/Co-Founder of Parkland’s Rising Tide Car Wash Dad to Thomas, 25, and Andrew, 23 “As a parent I have learned to combine faith with perseverance. Over the years I often find myself having to make some hard choices on behalf of my boys, and that’s where faith comes in; a life dedicated to their growth and success is the perseverance part.” BALANCING ACT: “Balance between career and family life is always something that takes effort, but since the entire family is involved with Rising Tide, I am very lucky to be able to combine the two. Working together brings us closer, as our lives are directly intertwined. My son Andrew has autism and his relationship with me and my other son, Thomas, is more interactive and normal— in a neurotypical way—at work then it has ever been.” QUALITY TIME: “We all love getting up early and enjoying the South Florida life on our boat. We’ll go down to the Keys or anchor on a mooring by a reef where we can go diving and snorkeling. We’ll finish up with a barbecue or a stop at one of the many restaurants on the water.” ALL IN THE FAMILY: “Thomas has many of my characteristics, not the least of which is his ambition and drive to try and make a positive difference in the lives of the people around him. Andrew has a strong work ethic and also works very hard to try and help others. Faced with the challenge of autism himself, this is an incredible gift and he shines with happiness and a feeling of accomplishment when he helps others.” OVERCOMING OBSTACLES: “I strive to find a balance between wanting to have my sons be the best they can be by using what I have learned and taught them for their benefit, and being patient enough to let them learn for themselves.” THE BIG PICTURE: “I would hope people would describe my children as men of good moral character and positive contributors to society. I hope they find happiness, health and a feeling of self worth.”

SETH HYMAN

Business Consultant Dad to Melissa, 14, and Rebecca, 8 “My children are the centerpieces of my life. Unfortunately, since Rebecca is a severely medically complex child—she has genetic disorder called 1p36 Deletion Syndrome—she requires 24/7 care. After growing my business for over seven years, I had to make the difficult decision to put all of my efforts and energy toward Becca’s health and well-being. Since I couldn’t do both effectively, I chose to be my daughter’s advocate over pursuing further business success. Becoming the best advocate for Rebecca and other children with disabilities has empowered me to search for new ways to work toward helping the voices that can’t be heard and the families experiencing the same issues we face daily.” QUALITY TIME: “Becca is the best cuddler; holding and hugging her creates a very special bonding moment and I feel her love for me even though she can’t express it with words. She also loves being pushed in her swing and relaxing in the pool. Melissa and I love to cook together; she’s got a real knack for it. We also love to watch movies together and our favorite TV show, Shark Tank.” OVERCOMING OBSTACLES: “My family has been working to assist in the passing of the first legislation that would legalize a non-euphoric low-THC marijuana in Florida. It cannot get you high and has high levels of the compound Cannabidiol (CBD), which has been shown to control seizures.” THE BIG PICTURE: “I need to be hopeful, yet realistic. I hope Becca will be seizure-free, healthy and start to live a life of progressing instead of regressing. But at the same time, I know that Becca will be with my wife and me her whole life, and I hope we can provide her the best possible care and cherish every moment together. Melissa has played such an important role in the care of Becca over the years, and her willingness to treat her like a typical sister has enabled her to have so much compassion and understanding for individuals with disabilities. I know she is so proud to see her dad fighting for the best care and rights for her little sister. I hope she continues to learn that in order for any kind of change to happen in our world, you must be vocal, have a clear and concise plan of action and do things professionally so you can truly make a difference.”

Birks split-shank engagement ring.

Primer

Getting mentally prepped to tie the knot? In case you’re flummoxed as to where to start or who to call, we’ve got some basic first-step info for you right there. Starting with….

The Rings

Ah, the rings: perhAps the element of the whole wedding planning whirlwind that women think most about and men stress most about. the array of settings, colors and shapes of stones (even when it comes to diamonds, which in the past have always been traditionally white) available can set off a tailspin of confusion for both the bride and the groom. tracey Dikes, co-owner of Weston Jewelers in Weston, gives the following update on what’s hot now: “the halo setting is still very strong this year, as it enhances the ring sparkle and makes the center stone appear larger by circling the diamond with smaller diamonds,” she says. “What’s popular now is to set the smaller stones horizontally so that the brilliance is visible from all sides. modern cushion-cut diamonds are a hybrid of old european and mine cuts; the soft, rounded edges have a romantic shape.” One popular setting right now is a split shank ring where the diamond is set between two V’s on each side and the sides are diamond pavé set. stones from

Forevermark, a brand from the 125-yearold De Beers group, are also still a popular choice; they are hand selected for beauty and rarity, responsibly sourced, and each stone is inscribed with a number that can trace the stone in case it is ever stolen. For a nontraditional ring, Dikes says, “setting your engagement ring with a sapphire in the center is a stunning alternative to a diamond for someone who wants to stand out in the crowd.” she adds, “the fact that Kate middleton is wearing it definitely contributed to its popularity.” When working with a couple, it’s usually the woman who has an idea of the design she’s looking for. many times they know they want a particular shaped stone and sometimes a style they have seen in a magazine or on a friend who is already engaged. “many times the couple will look at rings in our case and find something they love,” Dikes says. “For customers looking for something unique, our sales associates are able to design rings based upon individual desires. We have a look book of rings we’ve designed to provide ideas for those who want something different and an amazing jeweler who creates works of art every day.” With the help of a CAD upstairs, that jeweler is able to create the wax from the drawings the customer liked and then cast the ring in gold or platinum. “While traditionally

platinum was long the most popular way to go, trending now is for the rings to be set in either yellow or rose gold for a more modern feel,” says Dikes. When a man comes in alone, he usually has an idea of what he’s looking for. From researching the internet, a lot of men are familiar with the 4 C’s (color, clarity, cut and carat weight). they also usually have an idea of what style they want, thanks to Facebook. Often times their significant other will hint about shape and style to help them by posting pictures of rings on Facebook with statements like “isn’t this gorgeous?” or “i love this!” “most men have a number in mind that they would be comfortable spending, and we are always respectful of that when selling them rings,” Dikes says. Wedding bands no longer have to match engagement rings, nor are they always worn on the same finger, although the metal color is usually the same. “men’s and women’s rings don’t usually match, either,” says Dikes. Another advantage of doing your engagement and wedding ring shopping here, besides the obvious: you can find fabulous bridal party gifts at the same time, like montblanc pens or Chopard cufflinks for the groomsmen, or roberto Coin tiny initial necklaces or a fabulous silver bracelet from hera or nanis for your bridesmaids. magazine.com

The Dress(es)

Brides are opting for colors other than white. Shown: Dress by Chrissy Wai-Ching.

Her store is famous for a reason: after nearly 30 years in business, Zola Keller is the go-to for formal occasions of every kind—even beauty pageants—but especially for brides (and mothers of the bride, and wedding parties) who truly want their style to sparkle on their wedding day—literally. And while you’ll find an immense selection when you walk into the store, the best part is you can custom-design your dress down to the last detail, whether it’s taking a dress that’s already available and adding or taking away a strap, a belt, sleeves or other details. In fact, many of the dresses at Zola Keller are customdesigned to what the bride wants. “They might have certain elements they want in a dress, such as a strapless, and then others that they don’t want. They tell us specifically, and we tailor it to their dreams.” Keller says that lately she’s been getting quite a few requests for colored bridal dresses as opposed to the traditional white or ivory. She also points out that the mother of the bride is no longer dressing in the conservative mode that was once traditional. “Not my mothers of the bride!” she says, with a laugh. “The mother of the bride is the third-most important person at that wedding,” after the bride and groom. “We do beautiful beaded dresses for all body types—I just did one in a size 24. We can do sleeves and keep it classy, yet sexy. I make everybody look good!”

Wedding bands no longer have to match engagement rings, nor are they always worn on the same finger, although the metal color is usually the same.

The Tux Mario Argiro’s namesake boutique, Moda Mario, has spent over 30 years as the go-to shop for guys who settle for nothing less than high style, meticulous fit and personalized service when it comes to their wardrobe, and that means everything from suits to shirts to shoes. Argiro travels to Europe to handpick the inventory for his store, so he can say with certainty that his customers won’t find what he carries anywhere else in South Florida. When it comes to weddings, he says, “I’ve done a lot of them, from the father of the groom or bride to the groom and all the groomsmen.” Customers can choose from a cabinet full of 20,000-plus color swatches, which set the tone for custom ties, vests and pocket squares, suspenders, shoes, ties, socks, shirts with pearl buttons, and more, all hand-selected by Argiro himself, including basic foundational pieces. He also sells his own designs, as well as womenswear for those wives, girlfriends and brides-to-be who are seeking clothing and accessories for not just weddings but also honeymoons and special events. Recently, he’s moved the boutique to a new location just down the street from its original home, from 820 Las Olas Boulevard to 1200 E. Las Olas. The current space is 937 square feet of exclusivity and elegance. “The selection remains the same; I just have an improved selection because I need to be wise when I choose everything for this smaller space,” Argiro says. “I still have my antiques here and I’ll still make you an espresso if you like. All that is the same.” A “Design Your Own” soft opening will be taking place May 7-10th from 11 am to 5 pm, where customers can do just that. “You dictate it and I’ll make it possible,” Argiro says. “For example, if you want a dinner jacket but without satin on it, or a tux without any silk band, or you’d like a crazy lining.” The four-day event will take place in conjunction with the very cool new restaurant Bao right next door, where Moda Mario clients can wait with a drink or enjoy lunch at 20 percent off while waiting for their turn in the atelier.

From traditional to dazzling, embellished Italian tuxes like this one from Dolce & Gabbana to your own custom design, Moda Mario offers the best in upscale tuxedos.

Planning the Event Weston Hills Country Club is a favorite venue for weddings in the area, and it’s not hard to see why: the patio setting with its backdrop of golf course, lakes and fountains sells itself. Averaging between 25 to 40 weddings per year, they know their stuff. And director of events Michelle Young has been at the helm of those events for 19 years. “More often than not, it’s a couple’s first time getting married,” says Young, who works closely with her valued team on each and every event. “We paint a picture for them and offer them some sage advice. We also work with many vendors, so we’ll give them a list of those vendors with contact information for each. They don’t have to use them, but they’re vendors we have relationships with, so we know and trust them.” In addition, Young says, she and her team work to create floor plans, coordinate timing, oversee dietary needs with regard to menus, and advise the bride and groom about what’s trending now, what’s “hip and happening” now and how to personalize the experience. “We take something that’s unique to each bride and their family and offer ways to make it a part of their wedding,” she explains. “We once built an entire engagement party around a very elegant camp theme complete with centerpieces made from bark, wild flowers and berries, and an upscale barbecue that ended with the most fun s’mores station to celebrate the fact that the couple met at sleep-away camp as kids.” While June may be a popular month for weddings traditionally, Young says that’s not the case in Florida. “June is our quiet time; the season runs from October right after Halloween until May, when the weather is perfect.” For Ornatus Events & Décor in Weston, the peak season takes place between September and December, but they’re busy year-round because, as owner Alejandro Figueira says, “South Florida is a wedding destination, for locals but also people from other states, 64

especially colder ones, who want to be married on the beach.” Figueira, along with his wife Gabby Santiago, who is the accounts manager for the company but “by his side” throughout their events, says that in South Florida, what he finds is that “Everything here is a show. Nowadays, brides and grooms even want their centerpieces to have a ‘wow’ effect on their guests.” To oblige them, he says that for each successive event he has to come up with something different, something no one else has seen, whether it’s through the use of coordinated lighting, different textures or even the furniture. That includes the venues—they are planning a July wedding, he says, that will take place at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. And even if a client presents an idea that Figueira might not initially have considered, he finds a way to make it work with elegance and grace using special details. “Even if it might not sound like the ideal concept at first,” says Gabby, “he manages to see it in a way that makes it beautiful.” The Weston branch of Ornatus opened three years ago as an extension of the family business in Figueira’s native Venezuela, which is still operating—so he practically grew up in the business. “We have the most efficient commercial network, using the best wedding destinations, wedding planners, invitation designers, lighting companies, luxury linens, rental, draping companies, photographers, videographers, entertainers, chefs and caterers, cake designers, ice sculptures, tent rental companies, furniture rental, both here and abroad.” Ornatus also designs and manufactures the floral concepts in addition to the theme of each event. “Being that Venezuela is a multicultural country, we are experienced in different types of events using the different customs and tastes,” Figueira points out. “Whether it’s European, Arab or Hispanic, we fulfill our clients’ needs.”

Thrice As

Ocean views, topnotch nibbles and creative cocktails welcome diners to S3. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Nice

SITTING PRACTICALLY ON THe SANdS OF FORT LAudeRdALe BeACH, S3 couldn’t be a more fitting name for the latest dining addition to the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort: The S’s stand for sun, surf and sand, and patrons dining on the outside patio can take full advantage of the Atlantic. Once seated, the lyrical lapping of the waves, salty sea air and refreshing ocean breezes are complimentary, and add an air of authenticity to the resort chic vibe noticeable throughout the eatery. If you’re one who’d rather not deal directly with the elements, don’t fret; the restaurant has considered you, too. The interiors have been cleverly designed so that every seat comes with an expansive ocean view. In addition to sun, surf, and sand, the name also reflects S3’s penchant for a few other things, namely steak, seafood and sushi, which appear prominently on a menu made for sharing. Categories like Snacks, Raw, Sushi, Specialty Rolls, Small Plates and Wood Fired encourage diners to order tapas-style and nosh from a wide array of selections. We suggest starting off with the crisp baby artichokes. Served with a lemon caper aioli, the dish personifies spring, even if Mother Nature seems to think it’s already summer. The goat cheese croquettes are another good bet, and offer a unique twist on a South Florida fave. With approximately half of the menu devoted to raw selections, in both sushi and sashimi style, you definitely don’t want to miss out, especially considering many diners come to S3 for the sushi program alone. Sushi nachos, with tuna, spicy salmon, guacamole and tobiko combine the best of both worlds—fresh-from-the-sea fish and a modern Mexican twist. And then there are the rolls. You’ll find the heavy hitters—Spicy Tuna and Shrimp Tempura rolls are a must-have on any menu—but skip those for a taste of something more creative like the Crab n’ Shrimp with sweet shrimp, crab, Asian pear and crisp noodles, or the Thai Tuna, a taste of the tropics with avocado, coconut, macadamia nuts and jalapeño wrapped in soy paper. The other two S’s—steak and seafood—shine in cooked dishes like coffee-rubbed skirt steak, which emerges from the wood-fired oven bedecked in a mango chimichurri with a 78

side of yucca; an oak-grilled rib eye steak matched up with a luxe truffle cauliflower gratin; and savory short ribs made even better with a black pepper spaetzle. OK, so that last dish isn’t steak, but bears mention nonetheless. Shortribs and spaetzle in one dish? Consider it your duty, and since it’s a small plate, there’s really no excuse. If you’re looking for something lighter, S3’s fish preparation is the way to go, and diners can choose between grilled octopus; shrimp toast; chard-wrapped Scottish salmon served with Applewood bacon and lentils, or 7 Spice Seared Scallops atop an Asian risotto with a Yuzu truffle vinaigrette. And on those nights when you’d rather drink your dinner, S3 has a solid cocktail program—much like their sister restaurant, YOLO, both of which are owned by The Restaurant People. Specialty drinks run the gamut from Asian-inspired sips like the Saki Sunset, which mixes Grey Goose with plum sake, cranberry and pineapple juices, and the Thai Coconut Crush, a combination of vanilla-infused Bacardi, basil, mint, cilantro and coconut milk, to tamer selections like a frozen banana colada that includes a shot of chocolate and a berry mojito with fresh blueberries and strawberries. To enhance the experience, do it all under a full moon at the restaurant’s monthly Full Moon Parties, where you can get bottle service at fire pit tables and complimentary sushi while being entertained by Maori fire dancers. S3 really has thought of everything. S3 at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort is open Mon.-Thurs. from 11:30 am to 11 pm; Fri. and Sat. from 11:30 am to 12 am; and Sun. from 10 am to 10 pm. 505 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954.523.7873; S3restaurant.com.

FORK & KNIFE When you’re craving classics with a twist, head to Fork & Knife, where you’ll find “the future of old school.” What does that mean, exactly? The menu focuses on modern takes on classic comfort food, and the same dishes that made you smile as a child have been reimagined for your adult palate, using fresh seasonal ingredients and housemade accoutrements. Think Turkey Meatloaf Cupcakes “frosted” with smashed Yukon potatoes, or a Chicken & Waffle Sandwich, which puts a twist on the Southern fave with maple syrup and sriracha. The kitchen has made it into the beverage program as well, with homemade purées and infusions taking center stage in drinks like the Huckleberry Berry Lemonade and the Cucumber Gin Gimlet. These are tempting offers, as is Fork & Knife’s Happy Happy Hour, which runs Monday through Saturday from 3 pm-8 pm. And then there’s brunch, where difficult decisions will inevitably ensue. Brisket Mashed Hash or Cap’n Crunch French Toast? Only you can decide, but we suggest gathering the troops. This way, you’ll get a bite of everything. Heaven

Can’t Wait JoVé KiTChen & Bar It’s no secret that reserving a room at any Four Seasons Hotel provides not just a bed for your head, but also a completely luxe experience. Most exciting among them is undoubtedly the properties’ restaurants, and the Palm Beach location follows suit with Jové Kitchen & Bar, an upscale-casual Italian restaurant, helmed by Italian native Chef Mauro Zanusso. The name, which references the Italian God of the Sky, completes the land-ocean-sky triumvirate of restaurants at the property—guests and locals alike can also dine at the Atlantic Bar & Grill and Graze. At a glance, it’s easy to see just how heavenly Jové’s menu really is. Appetizers include warm burrata with marinated tomatoes, prosciutto broth and basil and branzino crudo accompanied by arugula, pine nuts, black currants and preserved Meyer lemon. There’s also an olive oil tasting available, along with properly Italian cheese and charcuterie options. While it’s tempting to fill up on such delicacies, you’d be remiss to skip the pasta and risotto options, ranging from pumpkin raviolo with short rib, Amaretto, garlic pesto to gnocchi with figs and Gorgonzola. A variety of seafood—including raw bar selections and a full caviar service—prime meats, stone-fired pizzettes and plenty of authentic dolci complete the menu. Locals, tourists and celebrities alike come for the famed chopped salad, truffled lobster mac ‘n cheese, rum-baked sweet plantains and even the chopped salad. But beef is the star here, from an 8-oz. filet mignon to a 48-oz. Porterhouse, served with savory sauces and butters to drive up the crazy-good meter a notch. Sugar reef grill — 600 N.
