all well & good

By Alison Ryan

Food Fight Eat to beat disease: Dr. Sonali Ruder can show you how.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Dr. Sonali Ruder, a Broward physician who’s been dubbed the “Foodie Physician,” is here to tell us that what we eat plays an important role in the fight against the disease. “While there is no one specific food that can prevent breast cancer, there are certain foods to boost your immune system, fight inflammation, and help keep your risk as low as possible.” Ruder touts studies that show a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of breast cancer; as well, a Mediterranean diet of fish, fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes and olive oil may reduce the risk of estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer. So, which foods hold the power of prevention?

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, arugula, and cauliflower are rich in phytochemicals that fight cancer. Use quick-cooking methods like stir-frying or sautéing to retain as much of the phytonutrient concentration as possible.

Orange foods—think sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, cantaloupe and mango— are rich in carotenoids, which have a preventative effect on breast cancer.

Red foods such as tomatoes, watermelon, guava and red bell peppers are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps stop cancer cell growth.

Drink green tea. It’s known to boost the immune system, and although the exact mechanism is unknown, researchers believe that the high level of polyphenols in tea helps kill cancer cells.

a sweet new way to smooth your skin.

There They Grow Harpke Family Farm’s known for its fresh, organic produce—but book a visit and you’ll find much more.

While others around the country are enjoying fall fun at farms, we can do the same—minus the major drop in temperatures. Check out the hidden gem Harpke Family Farm, an urban farm located in Dania Beach that’s run by Tamer and Claire Harpke, a young couple known for supplying their fresh, organic products to many of Dade and Broward counties’ hottest restaurants. While South Florida doesn’t have the growing season that many cities around the country have, you’ll find 30 varieties of live microgreens and micro herbs, hydroponic gem lettuces, petite root veggies such as heirloom carrots, turnips, radishes and tomatoes. Bring the kids and enjoy your bounty under their Seminole Indian chickee hut at the fully shaded farm table or take a monthly yoga class with nature as your backdrop. Farm visits are by appointment only. 2781 SW 36th St., Dania Beach; harpkefamilyfarm.com.

KIKO Dolphins linebacker

Kiko Alonso fits right in

here in South Florida— and find his new(ish)

to stay in tip-top shape. Here’s how he does it. By Linda Marx

Keeps His Mojo

The son of Hispanic parents, Kristian “Kiko” Alonso, aka “El Bravo” to his 82,800 followers on Instagram, is thriving in his career as a linebacker with the Miami Dolphins. He also loves his Spanish culture and its influences, which run rampant in South Florida. Even though he was born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, spent years growing up in Los Gatos, California, and played college football for the Ducks at the University of Oregon, he has recently taken a serious interest in his Spanish roots. Alonso’s mother is from Colombia, where he spent summers growing up; his father was born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico. “I like to visit my family in Colombia and Puerto Rico,” says Alonso, 27, who is bilingual and practiced Spanish over the years with both of his parents. “Out of everywhere I travel, I like to go to those inWESTON MAGAZINE

trates more on running and lifting. He also enjoys the beach when he has a rare pocket of spare time. And, he adds, “California has a lot more mountains than Florida, so I like to go hiking.” Alonso is also strictly disciplined when it comes to diet. He endeavors to eat healthfully at every single meal. “I stay away from cheat

meals, although it’s really hard when you are on the road,” he says. “I like to eat vegetables, fruits, good grains and lean proteins.” His role models are his father, a computer engineer; his mother, a retired Spanish teacher; and his brothers and grandparents, because he admires the way they conduct their lives. “I am around them the most, and I see my values in them,” he says proudly. But the early influence from his revered Los Gatos High School head football coach, Horace “Butch” Cattolico, has reigned supreme over the years and taken him from college into the pros with aplomb. “He taught us what it takes to play at a high level,” says Alonso. “He is like a legend in California. And he was just a great coach.” These days, in addition to football and fitness, Alonso loves life in South Florida, where he enjoys the weather and being in the thick of his Hispanic culture. In many ways, it has reconnected him with his roots after his NFL stints in New York and Pennsylvania. “The weather here is great,” he says. “The food is great. The beach is great. And since I speak Spanish, I definitely feel right at home.”

places the most. While I have some cousins, some aunts, and a great aunt in South Florida, most of my family lives in Colombia and Puerto Rico.” Excited for this NFL football season, Alonso was traded to the Dolphins in 2016 from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played for one year after leaving the Buffalo Bills. The 6’3”, 233-pound star, who often starts as middle linebacker, signed a whopping four-year, $28.9 million contract with the Dolphins, including a $7 million signing bonus. Last year, in his first season with the Dolphins, Alonso started 15 games with 115 total tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble and a defense touchdown against the San Diego (now Los Angeles) Chargers in week 10. In these NFL years, he has tried to take the upper hand mentally, getting down to business with no nonsense. “A linebacker is a linebacker,” is how he simplifies it. “You run and you hit.” “The addition of Kiko to the Dolphins linebacker corporation brought speed and aggressive spirit back to what historically had been a position of strength for Miami’s defense,” says Bill Newgent, host of South Florida’s City Voice Podcast and a sports information pro. “Alonso’s speed and talent are recognized by everyone. He also happens to bring a hero factor to South Florida’s huge Cuban fan base.” Alonso grew up in an environment that was all about sports. All of his family members and friends played something, whether baseball, soccer, basketball or football, or a combination. “Sports was basically what we did,” he recalls. “My brother Carlos and I played football and baseball. Carlos migrated toward baseball while I went to football. We always supported each other. We were really competitive as kids, and I think that carried on when we grew up.” Admittedly, Alonso favored football over baseball because he had more opportunity to “smash guys” and “make them think.” He told Philadelphia magazine when he played for the Eagles that he “got bored with baseball because I can’t hit anybody.” The ultra-fit Alonso is also totally smitten with mixed martial arts and boxing. Laid-back and chill in demeanor, he uses some of the training he has had in these combat sports to enhance his football performance. “I am a big fan of combat sports,” he says. “I like to train; I like to watch combat sports. It’s a great workout. It’s also just something I love to do. It’s good cardio. It’s also good for hand-eye coordination.” He has been a devotee of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the American mixed-martial-arts organization based in Las Vegas that is becoming more and more popular today with sports fans and athletes everywhere. They utilize this discipline to boost their performance levels and cross train. To that end, Alonso and his two brothers, Carlos and Lucas, have frequented Boxeo Cubano in Hialeah, boxing and cross-training there. Alonso says he doesn’t get hit much and likes to shadowbox and do some sparring. His overall fitness regimen is one that’s well rounded. In addition to the mixed martial arts, he follows a brutal regimen that would collapse an ordinary mortal. “I like to do different stuff,” he explains. “Weight training, running, crossfit, swimming, hiking—I am pretty active. I spend from two to five hours all day training.” During the off-season, he increases his variety, doing “everything,” from field work to weights, surfing, swimming and yoga to boxing and ultimate frisbee. This differs from in-season work, when he concen-

“My favorite place to get a healthy meal is The Cheese Course in Weston Town Center, a charming place with fresh and delicious salads, sandwiches and soups. My go-to healthy dish is the Classic Greek salad, which includes tomato, cucumber, green peppers, red onion, Kalamata olives, and feta on a bed of fresh greens served with dolmas and a fresh baguette. It has a variety of healthy ingredients that are light, yet satisfying. It’s big enough to share and you still feel as though you have indulged yourself.” The Cheese Course, 1679 Market St., Weston; 954384-8183; thecheesecourse.com

My favorite items are the House Salad—it’s packed with tons of veggies and the Dijon dressing is so good—and the Falafel Wrap is amazing. “A few years ago, I discovered Juice Therapy Cafe in a little plaza in Davie and I was immediately hooked on their wheatgrass shots and the lemon ginger wheatgrass shots, which are like healthy espressos that offer a lot of energy and boost the immune system. Since I don’t eat animal protein, I love the Black Bean Burger with vegan mayo and their house dressing that’s made from scratch—and I like that they don’t charge extra for the avocado like many places do. “My favorite go-to restaurant for a healthy meal is Giardino Gourmet Salads. I eat there at least twice a week after my workouts. My top salad is the Caprese in the Mix, made with romaine greens, luscious ripe plum tomatoes, fresh mozzarella that melts in your mouth, crisp red bell peppers, capers, and topped with fresh pesto balsamic vinaigrette and baked croutons. Eating there absolutely helped me lose my baby weight after having my son Dillon, while fulfilling the protein and carbs needed for strength.” Giardino, 1390 Weston Rd., Weston, 954-446-6677; giardinosalads.com

Power Pizzeria bakes whey protein into their crust, doesn’t add sugar, cuts their meat and veggies in-house, uses organic sauces and natural skim cheese, and always has fresh natural toppings. The result is a pizza with less carbs, calories and fat, and more protein. Since you can customize your pizza to your liking, I go with a thin crust to cut carbs even more, load up on my favorite veggies, and add some meats. The best part is that it’s some of tastiest, most savory pizza I’ve ever eaten.” Power Pizzeria, 2246 Weston Rd., Weston, 954-218-5975; powerpizzeria.com SALMON WITH MOZZARELLA SALAD

Working Vacation BY BOB CURLEY

St. Lucia’s BodyHoliday is a working vacation for your body and your mind.

52

OCTOBER 2017

Nearly every resort in the Caribbean has the words “beach” or “spa” in its name. Not St. Lucia’s The BodyHoliday, even though it has both a gorgeous beach and one of the best spas we’ve ever seen. It’s not that the resort is overly modest—it just knows its priorities: making you feel better about yourself, inside and out. People talk about taking the “trip of a lifetime,” but a stay at The BodyHoliday can literally change your life, and how many resorts can legitimately say that? Honestly, you could make a typical Caribbean beach vacation out of a trip to this St. Lucia resort—the dining and drinks are also excellent—but that would be kind of missing the point. What makes the BodyHoliday special isn’t just that daily spa treatments are part of the resort’s all-inclusive package—although that’s pretty awesome— but that the resort offers an unmatched variety of wellness-enhancing programs, classes and services. A typical day’s schedule is packed with activities ranging from vinyasa yoga, tai chi and aqua fitness classes to skill-building archery, swimming, and sailing lessons. If sports are your preferred path to wellness, you can join

a volleyball game in or out of the pool, learn the fundamentals of cricket on the beach, or take part in a tennis tournament. The spectrum of activities is wide and varied, from the ease of a morning walk to nearby Pigeon Island, table tennis or a round of golf (also inclusive) to the challenge of a one- or 2.5-kilometer ocean swim, a 6.5K run to Cotton Bay, or the resort’s unique Quadrathalon—a four-stage adventure that includes a 10K mountain-bike ride, a 4K run, rappelling down a 100-foot cliff, and kayaking for 2.5K along the island’s north shore. You can take it all at your own pace, of course, but the BodyHoliday is the kind of place that makes you want to push your limits. And while you don’t need to be an athlete when you arrive, you’re likely to feel more like one by the time you leave. That’s especially true if you go down during one of the resort’s Wellfit Families programs, week-long programs offered at no extra cost and led by world-class athletes like future NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss and Olympic sprinters, swimmers and rowers. True to the overall BodyHoliday vibe, our week spent with Moss was less about fanboy moments than learning about fitness from someone who spent years keeping his body in peak physical condition— and is still finely toned as a 40-year-old retiree. The daily boot camp led by Moss was no day at the beach—entailing a mix of running through the sand, pushups, crunches and burpees— but the plunge into the surf at the end was exhilarating, and the week

also offered plenty of opportunity for one-on-one time with a sports legend, including pickup football and volleyball games and a hike to the top of Gros Piton, one of St. Lucia’s postcard peaks. Even if you’re not visiting with a world-class athlete, The BodyHoliday will keep you active with all kinds of excursions, including a weekly sunset cruise, Land Rover adventure tours and a chartered private sail onboard the resort’s new X-Treme 26 racing sailboats (take out two and race a friend!). The resort’s “equine journey” lets you work on your emotional health by communicating with horses and painting temporary messages on the sides of your steed for the day. If all this sounds a bit exhausting for a vacation, the resort’s spectacular spa stands poised upon a hilltop overlooking Cariblu Beach, ready to soothe your sore muscles and clear your cluttered mind. A dozen treatments are included in the price of your BodyHoliday stay, including two types of Swedish massage, facials, wraps, aromatherapy and a body rub designed especially for mothers-to-be. A true sanctuary, the Indian-inspired Wellness Centre has two floors of 33 treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, a fitness center and a separate Ayurvedic Temple arrayed around a sunny courtyard. Once you climb the stairs to the spa you’ll be tempted to linger for hours despite the temptation of the beach below—the Wellness Centre has the most comprehensive menu of services we’ve ever seen, and if you hang around for

Randy Moss

a while a therapist is likely to recruit you into trying something new, like the complementary bamboo massage we got on an outdoor table beside the pool one afternoon. If you’re really serious about making a BodyHoliday trip a life-changer, the resort’s BodyScience program takes pre-trip planning to a whole other level with a comprehensive health and wellness assessment that begins before you even leave home. Combining Eastern and Western philosophies, the program is supervised by the resort’s on-site medical staff and can be tailored to individual health needs, including stress-relief, physical fitness, digestive health and healthy aging. The BodyHoliday has an entire wing of singles rooms for travelers who want to make the journey to self-improvement a solo trip, with no extra supplement charged. While the resort’s facilities are widely spaced around 32 acres of tropical grounds, guestrooms are mainly concentrated in a single building stretching along the north side of the beach, with easy access to the ocean, pool and dining areas. Oceanfront rooms feature standalone soaking tubs surrounded by gossamer curtains that let in the light from spacious balconies with views out to the Caribbean and Pigeon Island, a St. Lucian national park. What you put into your body is also part of what you take out of a BodyHoliday vacation, and the resort makes it easy to support all that wellness work with healthy eating, including fruit and veggie smoothies at the beachfront deli, lots of grilled fish and locally sourced produce, and vegetarian entrées on every restaurant menu. Gluten-free, low-fat, lowcarb, diabetic and Ayurvedic menus can also be custom-designed for the length of your stay. That said, The BodyHoliday won’t hesitate to tempt you with indulgent desserts and a seven-course, wine-paired tasting menu at the Cariblue Windows restaurant: our savory nibbles of seared foie gras, sprinkled with sea salt and paired with a Tokaji dessert wine from Hungary, were pure heaven, but so were the refreshing (and far healthier) grilled watermelon and citrus kebabs served alongside a New Zealand sauvignon blanc from Tindall Vineyards—well worth the $85 upcharge for dinner. And when it’s time to celebrate all that you’ve accomplished during your stay, you can choose a special bottle from the resort’s wine salon, or salute yourself with something rummy and fruity at the beach bar. Because the BodyHoliday isn’t about denying pleasure; it’s taking joy in building a healthier, happier you.

What you put into your body is also part of what you take out of a BodyHoliday vacation, and the resort makes it easy to support all that wellness work with healthy eating.

A LEAD TEACHER AT YOGA FACTORY & FITNESS

What is your message about the benefits of yoga? Yoga is not just about working out. It’s about a healthy lifestyle. The practice of yoga allows students to find stillness in a world consumed by chaos. Yoga’s deep breathing and meditation practices help foster an inner shift from to-do lists, kids and spouse’s needs, financial concerns, and relationship struggles to something a little bit bigger than the issues you face. Yoga helps relieve stress and unclutters the mind, helping you to become more focused. ¶ What are the most important benefits of yoga? At its core, yoga is an exploration of the body and mind. A regular practitioner is able to develop an in-depth knowledge of the body’s biomechanics, including a greater understanding of exactly how it functions, and the changing nature of its limitations. Over time, yoga works with the body’s inevitable changes and allows the practitioner to live a more balanced life. ¶ What are the specific benefits of hot yoga? Yoga Factory’s hot yoga, with infrared heating, provides many healthy benefits. Once committed to the practice, you will see yourself transform. After a few regular sessions, your skin will be clearer, you’ll feel more energetic and you’ll sleep better. There will be noticeable changes in your body. Hot yoga will aid with weight loss, healing and repair of injuries. And best of all, it brings peace of mind.

DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN

Over the past two decades, Dr. Yedda Gomes-Ruane has built a solid reputation as Weston’s most experienced and successful pediatric dentist. BY JOHN BUCHANAN For more than 20 years, Dr. Yedda Gomes-Ruane has operated the most respected pediatric dental clinic in Weston. Dentistry for Children at Weston offers a comprehensive range of dental care services, from infancy through adolescence, to help children maintain optimal oral health and wellness. Dr. Gomes-Ruane holds a faculty position in the postdoctoral pediatric dentistry program at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine. She also holds a staff position at Miami Children’s Hospital. Dentistry for Children at Weston is located at 1608 Town Center Boulevard, Suite B, Weston. DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN AT WESTON

What services do you offer? We offer all of the important pediatric dental services. A very important service is the age-1 dental visit, during which we check the baby teeth for early cavities, show parents how to care for a young child’s mouth properly, and discuss the importance of good oral hygiene. We also offer 24-hour-a-day emergency services to treat traumatic injury. ¶ What are some other important pediatric treatments? We offer a variety of treatments for the prevention of tooth decay or to save or repair teeth when that is necessary. They include topical fluoride, which makes teeth more resistant to decay. Dental sealants are a plastic coating that can be applied to prevent cavities by sealing the little grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth known as pits and fissures. We also perform root canal treatments that can help save an injured or severely decayed tooth. ¶ You also specialize in special needs dentistry. What is that? Children with special needs can be divided into two groups. The first group includes children with dental problems such as congenital anomalies of the oral structures, severe skeletal malocclusion, cleft lip or palate or both, and the many syndromes that include defects of the oral cavity. The second group includes children with specific pediatric problems such as bleeding disorders, heart disease, cerebral palsy, autism and other neurological conditions. We specialize in treating both groups.

A UNIQUE HISTORY

Two decades ago, Dr. Steven L. Singer arrived in Broward County as its only pediatric ear, nose and throat doctor. Today, he is the area’s only independent practitioner. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Dr. Steven L. Singer is a board certified pediatric otolaryngologist—an ear, nose and throat doctor, and head and neck surgeon—with more than 20 years of experience. He earned his medical degree at the UCLA. He completed his internship and residency at University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital. He completed his fellowship at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis. Dr. Steven Singer is located at 2900 Commerce Parkway, Weston. For more information, call 954-987-5430. A Hollywood office is located at 1150 North 35th Avenue, Suite 395.

PEDIATRIC OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

What is your history in South Florida? I arrived in 1996, as the only fellowship-trained children’s ear, nose and throat doctor in Broward County. And I held that distinction for 15 years. I served as chief of surgery at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for nine years. And that history makes me unique, because I brought my specialty to Broward County. And even today, there are only three other doctors that are competitors of mine. ¶ What most sets you apart from the other doctors? We treat children from the day they are born through their teenage years, for issues from breathing problems to ear problems and tumors. We provide all pediatric ear, nose and throat services. General ENT practitioners often do not handle the more complex medical issues. We handle everything. That allows to bring a lot of new techniques to the community. That kind of experience is why parents whose children have more complicated needs tend to gravitate toward us. ¶ What other factors set you apart? Because I was the only doctor doing what I do when I came to the area, I have always been an independent. Today, I am the only independent pediatric otolaryngologist in the area. That means I am not beholden to any particular hospital or entity. My focus is always on whatever is in the best interest of the patient, not on any “affiliation.”

REJUVENATION ON DEMAND The new Rejuvchip Doral Clinic, operated by Dr. Jabal Uffelman, specializes in anti-aging medicine. Its premier service is natural hormone replacement for men and women. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Rejuvchip Doral, opened a year ago and operated by gynecologist and wellness specialist Jabal Uffelman, M.D., focuses on cosmetic and anti-aging medicine. Its most popular therapy is Rejuvchip, a minimally invasive procedure for natural hormone replacement in both men and women. Born in South Florida, Dr. Uffelman is a graduate of the University of Florida School of Medicine. He did his residency at University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital. He and his staff are fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Rejuvchip Doral is located at 9582 Northwest 41st Street, Doral. For more information, call 786-563-0171 or visit Rejuvchip.com. A Fort Lauderdale office is located at 2000 South Andrews Avenue.

OF REJUVCHIP DORAL

What is the Rejuvchip procedure? As part of the normal aging process, our body’s hormonal function slowly declines. Restoring hormonal function naturally using the Rejuvchip procedure is a safe and effective way to reverse aging. The Rejuvchip procedure inserts natural testosterone pellets, which are bio-identical and are made using a botanical source. The testosterone from the pellets enters the body in its natural molecular form and therefore doesn’t disrupt normal physiology, as in the case of synthetic hormones. ¶ What are the specific benefits of testosterone therapy? Both men and women who use the Rejuvchip procedure enjoy an array of health benefits. The symptoms of low testosterone are universal, and they affect both men and women. Benefits of Rejuvchip therapy include increased mental and physical energy, improved libido and sexual satisfaction, a healthier physique and a better sense of well-being. Women, in addition, also benefit from relief of hot flashes and PMS, vaginal rejuvenation, increased bone density and improved sleep. ¶ How long does a chip last? For men, the benefits last for about six months. For women, it’s about four months. It’s up to the patients whether they choose to replace the chip and continue the therapy. Because of the benefits they get, more than 80 percent of both men and women choose to continue the therapy over an extended period of time.

BEAT THE CLOCK

At The Vera Medical Institute in Weston, Dr. Carolina Vera offers the latest non-invasive, non-surgical anti-aging procedures and medical weight-loss programs. BY JOHN BUCHANAN The Vera Medical Institute is an aesthetic medical practice operated by Dr. Carolina Vera. It offers anti-aging procedures, skin care, laser services such as hair and vein removal and skin resurfacing, weight loss, hair restoration and body contouring. Dr. Vera earned her medical degree in osteopathic medicine in 2005 from Nova Southeastern University. She began her career as an emergency room doctor and is a board certified emergency room physician. She later pursued additional education in aesthetic medicine. She opened The Vera Medical Institute four years ago. The Vera Medical Institute is located at 1500 Weston Road, Suite 207, Weston. For more information, call 954-401-0039 or visit TheVeraMedicalInstitute.com. An additional office is located in Plantation at 1531 South University Drive, Suite 105.

OWNER AND MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE VERA MEDICAL INSTITUTE

How did you become interested in aesthetic medicine? My medical journey actually started with my own mother having plastic surgery done but not getting optimal results. That ignited my interest in offering patients non-invasive, non-surgical alternatives for anti-aging treatments that require no down time. That is now the entire focus of my practice. ¶ How has your approach evolved? We are working to steer the practice toward more of a holistic approach. For example, we do a lot of medical weight loss management and body contouring. But we start with a full evaluation of the patient in terms of what they want to accomplish in an overall way, and then we address the entire patient rather than just a specific issue, like weight loss. ¶ What comes after the weight loss? Once a patient reaches his or her weight loss goal, they often realize they have loose skin, or a little “pooch”’ somewhere on their body, so they ask what they can do about that. We then focus on those issues, with things like skin tightening, or body contouring, or Botox or fillers, as the next steps in creating the new you.

UNIQUE TRAINING Among South Florida’s evergrowing population of plastic surgeons, Dr. Nathan Eberle of Weston Center for Plastic Surgery has a rare background and expertise. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Weston Center for Plastic Surgery, previously owned by Dr. Barry Schwartz for three decades, is the oldest plastic surgery practice in Weston. It is now owned and operated by Dr. Nathan Eberle, who graduated from the University of Florida School of Medicine in 2010. He did his maxillofacial and general surgery residencies at the University of Florida and his plastic surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic. He completed dental school and trained as a dental surgeon before he attended medical school. He began his plastic surgery practice one year ago, specializing in cosmetic surgery. Weston Center for Plastic Surgery is located at 17160 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 4, Weston. For more information, call 954-228-6052 or visit PlasticSurgeryWeston.com.

OWNER OF WESTON CENTER FOR PLASTIC SURGERY

What sets you apart from other plastic surgeons? My background and training are unique. There are fewer than 100 plastic surgeons in the U.S. who have gone through dental school and then maxillofacial and plastic surgery training. Most plastic surgeons go through medical school and train in general surgery, then plastic surgery. So the most unique thing about me is the nature and comprehensiveness of my education and training. ¶ What procedures do you specialize in? I do a lot of facial cosmetic surgery. But because I’m a young plastic surgeon, a lot of younger female patients find me because they come for breast and body surgery. So, I perform the full gamut of cosmetic plastic surgery on the face and body. I’ve actually been very fortunate, because of my background, to do as much facial surgery as I have, because it usually takes years to develop a facial cosmetic practice. ¶ What is the message you want to get out to prospective patients? In South Florida, it’s important to seek out and find a properly trained and fully qualified plastic surgeon. And to do that, you need to do your research and see the surgeon’s training and background, including where they went to school.

EYEBROW DESIGN

Brazilian entrepreneur Antonio Teixeira and his partner have brought one of the world’s hottest and most innovative beauty treatments to Weston. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Founded in Brazil, Eyebrow Design offers the world’s most unique and effective eyebrow treatments for women. The company operates more than 420 individually owned boutiques around the globe. On July 1, Antonio Teixeira, a Brazilian entrepreneur who emigrated to the U.S. in 2014, and his partner, Cyro Bandeira, debuted an Eyebrow Design franchise outlet in Weston. As evidence of its innovation, Teixeira notes that Eyebrow Design has won several awards in its home country. Eyebrow Design is located at 282 Indian Trace, Weston. For more information, call 754-2237244 or visit EyebrowDesign.com

OWNER OF EYEBROW DESIGN

What sets Eyebrow Design apart from other eyebrow salons? We use an exclusive technique that helps our clients achieve the most gorgeous, naturallooking eyebrows possible. We start by outlining the brows based on the unique symmetry of each face. We then clean the top and middle of the brows with our organic, anti-bacterial thread, which is infused with Vitamin E. Then we remove the hairs below the brows with sterilized tweezers. ¶ How is the treatment completed? We apply our exclusive Jojoba Color Treatment, which provides nutrients to the brows, promotes hair growth, conditions the hairs and hydrates the skin. This treatment is pigmented, so it will offer a tinted look to the brows and fill in any gaps or sparse areas that you may have. To finalize the process, we define your brows even more by applying our clear mascara to hold your hairs in place. We follow that with an application of our highlight pencil underneath your brows, then a subtle amount of our highlight eye shadow. ¶ You also sell makeup products, correct? Yes. We have developed an exclusive line of makeup products based on our knowledge of women’s needs and desires. We offer the best and most unique eyebrow makeup in the world. Our Serum Plus promotes growth. Our Pencil 4X1 enhances your design. Our Toning Gel aligns and holds your design.

ORTHOPEDIC VISIONARY

Fort Lauderdale’s Leone Center for Orthopedic Care has developed a national reputation as one of the most innovative and respected facilities in the U.S. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Dr. William A. Leone, Jr., founder and director of The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care at Holy Cross Hospital, is one of the world’s most acclaimed orthopedic surgeons. He is particularly celebrated for his ability to correct and improve the results of knee or hip replacement surgery from other doctors that has left patients unhappy or in chronic pain. He is a universally recognized expert in the most innovative orthopedic technologies. The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care is located at Holy Cross Hospital, 1000 NE 56th Street, Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954-489-4575 or visit HolyCrossLeoneCenter.com.

}

DIRECTOR OF THE LEONE CENTER FOR ORTHOPEDIC CARE

How does your practice differ from other orthopedic surgeons? We are more of a “destination practice.” For example, patients come to us after they have been to other orthopedic doctors, but did not get their problem solved. We are also known for providing the best of personalized care from a staff that is very attentive. We are very much an old-fashioned medical practice. And that’s what many patients are seeking today. ¶ In terms of the surgeries themselves, what sets you apart? What sets me apart is that I am so experienced and that I do so many surgeries. Because of that, surgeries that are often considered very complex have become routine for me. I also use the latest techniques and newest technologies available for hip and knee replacement surgeries. That means that rather than guess at things like angles and pressures, I’m actually measuring very precisely. For example, for knee replacement surgery, I use kinematic sensor technology to do a better job of ensuring the best results. ¶ What are the latest innovations in orthopedic surgery? They include, on the knee replacement side, taking devices like the kinematic sensors and using the data they provide to help understand why some people who have already had a knee replacement are not happy with the results. And then that data also provides a road map of what we need to do to fix the problem.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY CANCER CARE The nationally acclaimed Cleveland Clinic Florida provides specific medical expertise that focuses on the treatment of specific types of cancer. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Cleveland Clinic Florida (CCF), consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals in the Sunshine State, is a not-for-profit, multi-specialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. With facilities in Weston, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Parkland, CCF has a staff of 235 physicians with expertise in 35 specialties. Its highly acclaimed Maroone Cancer Center, which provides multidisciplinary cancer care, opened in 2015. Cleveland Clinic Florida is located at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Boulevard, Weston. For more information, call 954-659-5124 or visit Clevelandclinicflorida.org.

DIRECTOR OF MAROONE CANCER CENTER AT CLEVELAND CLINIC FLORIDA

How does multidisciplinary cancer care benefit patients? Multidisciplinary care is the backbone of excellent quality cancer care today. That’s because each type of tumor requires special resources and support. Every type of cancer requires a particular type of expertise that includes oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists and so on. They all specialize in treating specific types of cancers. For example, in the treatment of breast cancer, we have dedicated oncologists who only treat breast cancer and the same is true for our surgeons and radiologists. Patients can be exposed to all of those specialties in one day, in one place. ¶ What is so important about the recognition Cleveland Clinic gets from hospital rating publications such as U.S. News & World Report? U.S. News & World Report annually names the best hospitals in the country. Cleveland Clinic Florida was recently rated as a highperforming cancer center. To give that rating, the magazine looks at eight standards. We were rated highly for all of them, such as nurse-to-patient ratio, the lowest mortality rate within 30 days after surgery, and support services. ¶ What are the complimentary services you offer and why are they important? We provide social workers and patient navigators, as well as nutritional counseling, massage therapy, art therapy and music therapy. We support the patient in many different ways to help them deal with the stress of having cancer.

PHYSICAL THERAPIST AT NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S DAN MARINO OUTPATIENT CENTER

What physical therapy services do you provide? We specialize only in the pediatric population, from ages 10 to 21. Most of our patients are from eighth grade through high school. We provide comprehensive care for young athletes that have been injured, whether that means a sprain or a strain or something more serious. We provide the full spectrum of rehabilitation services, from post-injury through someone’s return to sports activities. We also provide services for special cases such as scoliosis and patients with chronic pain conditions. ¶ What types of patients do you typically treat? Sports injuries account for a lot of our patients. The most common types of injuries that we see are ACL-related knee injuries. Most come from football, soccer or gymnastics. But they come from all sports. We typically treat patients both before and after ACL-reconstruction surgery is performed. We also do what we call “return-tosports testing,” to make sure it’s safe for a young athlete to return to sports. ¶ What factors are most important in the successful treatment of sports injuries? How quickly they seek treatment after the injury is very important. Another factor that is important is one-on-one, individualized treatment with a physical therapist for 45 minutes to an hour at each session.

CONVENIENT CARE Broward Health Weston offers hospital-quality, state-of-the-art imaging and urgent care services at significantly lower cost than a hospital. BY JOHN BUCHANAN The 80,000-square-foot, Mediterranean-style Broward Health Weston complex features an imaging center, urgent care center and women’s center. The locally owned facility is operated by the Broward Health system, which is part of the Community Public Healthcare System created as a special act of the state legislature. Its staff features radiologists and urgent care physicians. All three departments offer the advantage of significant cost savings over a hospital. The center has added a new ultrasound system because of growing demand for that service. Broward Health is also extending its evening and weekend hours for radiology and women’s center services. The urgent care has hours mon-sun 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. Broward Health Weston is located at 2300 North Commerce Parkway, Weston. For more information, call 954-217-5000 or visit BrowardHealth.org.

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT BROWARD HEALTH WESTON

What’s new or noteworthy at Broward Health? One thing that is new, something we have not had for a while, is breast MRI examinations. That is an important complement to our women’s center. That means if their visit shows they need additional testing done, such as after mammography, everything can be done in a single location. And MRI capability is also something that has been a frequent request from our patients in the women’s center. ¶ What else is new with your testing and diagnostic capabilities? In addition to adding breast MRI, we also updated all of our MRI capabilities. For example, we updated all of our MRI coils so that we can get clearer images. We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on that. We also brought in a new mammography machine and we upgraded our ultrasound equipment. ¶ What comes next? There is still more equipment that we want to replace. Our effort is now expanding even further into the women’s center. We’re going to upgrade our second mammography machine. We also plan to upgrade two other ultrasound machines. And at that point, everything we have will pretty much be brand new.

We offer an intensive physical therapy program that uses the PediaSuit Protocol, which uses an orthotic device that is fitted to the child so he or she can learn movements and exercises that they have not been blessed to know how to do, such as sitting, crawling, standing and walking. THE YOGA EXPERTS

The Prana Lab, founded by one of South Florida’s most respected expert instructors, offers topnotch classes, as well as meditation and healing services. BY JOHN BUCHANAN The Prana Lab, opened in January 2104, is a beautiful, serene lakeside sanctuary for yoga, meditation and healing. It offers an extensive roster of yoga classes in all major disciplines, as well as holistic nutrition, numerology, sound meditation, workshops, international retreats, children’s programs and Yoga Alliance teacher certification. Prana Lab was founded by RoseAnn Sbona, who was a well-known local yoga instructor for more than a decade before she decided to create Prana Lab as the first serious, dedicated yoga studio in West Broward. The Prana Lab is located at 16614 Saddle Club Road, Weston. For more information, call 954-888-9008 or visit ThePranaLab.com.

FOUNDER AND OWNER OF THE PRANA LAB

What distinguishes you from other yoga studios? We offer very high-level, expert instruction, which is provided by a team of 10 highly trained and very well-versed teachers. The most important things for people to know about us are the experience of our instructors and the extremely high level of instruction we offer. Our team also covers the full range of disciplines in yoga, not just a single type. ¶ What healing services do you offer? We offer Reiki, which helps restore your body’s energy centers to their natural state of flow. It also improves your overall health. The chakras, or energy centers of the body, are used to help diagnose and heal you physically, mentally and spiritually. So-called “Prana” healing matches a custom blend of yoga asanas specific to your needs, followed by Thai bodywork. The session closes with a healing Reiki practice that helps harmonize and promotes healing on all levels. ¶ What instructor certification do you offer? We offer an intensive, 200-hour, Yoga Alliance-certified teacher training program in Hatha yoga. Our program starts in September and runs until May. But it’s not just for people who want to actually become teachers. It’s also for beginning students who really want to build a better foundation from the beginning for their practice of yoga.

Improvements in Breast Cancer Treatment Help Patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida Breast cancer is a topic that concerns so many of us and needs greater attention. In the last few years several high-profile women and men including Good Morning Margaret Thompson, MD America anchor Breast Surgical Oncologist Robin Roberts have been diagnosed with the illness. Her public bravery in post-operative photos added to her popularity. Did you know that Dame Maggie Smith, Diahann Carroll and Richard Roundtree (better known as “Shaft”) also battled breast cancer? The state of the science in breast cancer is promising. However, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women and the chance that a woman will die from breast cancer is about 1 in 37. We can do more to prevent it and indeed, we must do more. For instance, mammograms, previously done by two-dimensional equipment, are now being replaced by 3D equipment, called tomosynthesis. With better screening and improved technology, we have better diagnostic capabilities. Tomosynthesis has reduced the “call-back rate.” Meaning, we are more accurate in diagnosing a spot that is likely to be cancerous, thus eliminating other unnecessary procedures.

“From a surgical aspect, treatments are changing continuously and patients are benefiting from new therapies,” said Margaret Thompson, MD, breast surgical oncologist. “We’ve found that patients who required the removal of all lymph nodes can now be spared this invasive treatment option, and only have a few lymph nodes removed. Radiation can now take its place, safely, and with fewer troublesome side effects.” According to Dr. Thompson, “Every day, we understand how important a team approach is in conquering cancer. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, our patients typically see a multi-disciplinary team that includes not just a surgeon but also a radiologist, pathologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, plastic surgeon and ancillary staff,” she commented. For our patients who require reconstruction, a cohesive team approach is critical too. One of our most noteworthy innovations involves using fat injections during the plastic surgery portion of treatment. Our team removes the excess fatty tissue from the abdomen or thighs, and injects it into the breast during reconstruction. Cancer care is complicated and overwhelming, but Dr. Thompson comments that Cleveland Clinic Florida helps ameliorate the non-medical issues, too. “We provide navigators, genetic counselors, support groups, plus massage, art and music therapists to help patients undergoing treatment. There’s even a boutique to help patients look their best by supplying wigs/hats, post-mastectomy bras and makeup seminars,” she said.

GASTRO HEALTH PHYSICIANS

Gastro Health is Florida’s largest physician group specializing in digestive health and is committed to top quality care and an exceptional healthcare experience. BY JOHN BUCHANAN Gastro Health, founded in 2006 by the merger of three long-running medical practices, is the largest operator of gastroenterology clinics in Florida, including 26 in South Florida. The company acquires and then manages existing practices and provides the infrastructure and support necessary for physicians to succeed in the current and ever-evolving healthcare environment. Consolidated ownership of clinics also increases the company’s ability to deliver high quality, value-based care. Gastro Health is headquartered at 9500 South Dadeland Boulevard, Suite 200, Miami. For more information, call 855-Gastro1 or visit GastroHealth.com.

CEO OF GASTRO HEALTH

How does Gastro Health position itself in the medical world? Gastro Health’s board certified physicians, allied professionals, nutritionists and administrative staff all seek to exceed our patient’s expectations. Our mission is to provide outstanding medical care and an exceptional healthcare experience. The experience aspect is particularly important because patients generally know when they have gotten good care, because they feel better. But the experience is also important because patients today are generally paying a higher portion of their healthcare costs, and they have more healthcare options. ¶ Why is Gastro Health growing so fast? The reality is that there are a lot of complexities in the business of healthcare, whether those are constraints from the government or from insurance companies. Historically, most physician’s offices started out as small enterprises, and the constraints are hard on them. So, in order for them to survive, they have to join with other physicians to share economies of scale and to expand their range of services. For example, we have both adult and pediatric gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, anesthesiologists and pharmacists all working together to provide care for the entire family. ¶ Why is that size and scope so important? Whether you’re a child, a young adult, or you’re age 50 and need a colonoscopy, or if you have any of the chronic diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, Gastro Health can address your needs. We provide excellent, ongoing care throughout every stage of your life.

THE

Mediterranean IS

calling

And it’s right around the corner at Panarea Sea Grill.

C

lose your eyes. Think back to your last vacation. Perhaps it was locals you met that told stories of the destination, or indigenous flavors that created the most enduring memories. If you yearn to replicate that feeling and are thinking about the warmth of the Mediterranean, its convivial conversation and authentic cuisine, make your way to Panarea Mediterranean Sea Grill on Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard. Intimate, cozy and worth the drive, this new restaurant is named after the second-smallest island of Italy’s Aeolian chain of picturesque volcanic islands. Notably famous for its large capers, the flavorful morsels are served as a welcome, perched on a glass of refreshing gazpacho to dinner guests every night. It’s a way for owner and trained sommelier Luca Delogu to welcome people into his “home” of 110 indoor seats, 15 of them outdoors on a beautifully lit garden patio and a charming, villa-like private room that seats 46 people (with its own audio-visual, in case you’re thinking of a good excuse for an off-site meeting). Delogu, who was born in Rome, grew up in the sea, diving for octopus and plucking sea urchin off the rocks in Sardinia. He nearly died diving for octopus when the tentacled creature wrapped itself around his neck and face mask, but a Sardinian cousin saved him with a quick maneuver. Yes, octopus is on the menu, no doubt recalling adventurous childhood pursuits. Delogu and Italian master

table hopping chef Claudio Sandri (who with 40 years of culinary experience beat Chef Morimoto in an Iron Chef rematch) spent months formulating the menu, which covers 15 of 20 Mediterranean countries from southern Spain to France, Italy, Turkey, Israel and Northern Africa. “We want to take diners on a journey that covers the true flavors of the diverse and vast coastlines of the Mediterranean,” says Delogu. The voyage on which Delogu and Chef Sandri lead guests is flavorful and reminiscent of a personal invitation into a local home, with rustic wood décor, framed art and hanging lights adding to the charming ambience. For dinner, it might be tempting to start with spreads like Greek Tzatziki or Egyptian Hummus, but we recommend going straight to Pejerreyes Fritos from Spain, little fried sand smelts that are considered “street food” in the country’s coastal towns and are served here with sage leaves and zucchini in a brown paper cone with grilled lemon. Then head to “Sea to be Sin” where seafood appetizers live, and try the Pulpo a la Valenciana (Spain), fresh grilled octopus served with potatoes, chick peas, mint, lemon and marinated olives, or the melt-inyour-mouth, not-to-be-missed Crudo di Branzino (Italy), a Mediterranean sea bass crudo served with radish-fennel salad and pops of crunchy pink peppercorns. Panarea is purportedly the only restaurant in Miami to make a spirulina pasta, which is original even for Italy and contains the healthy algae that is rich in beta-carotene and iron, and is simply served with

TOP: Pejerreyes Fritos from Spain. ABOVE: Grouper ravioli.

The voyage on which Delogu and Chef Sandri lead guests is flavorful and reminiscent of a personal invitation into a local home. fresh vegetables, tomatoes and olive oil to allow the spirulina flavor to shine through. Other noteworthy entrées include Ravioli Di Cernia (Italy), three large, housemade ravioli filled with fresh grouper and eggplant in a light, flavorful tomato sauce. Served on delicate floral plates from Spain, the presentation adds to the mood of being in the private home of a great local chef. From Morocco, Chef Sandri serves a hearty khroufe, an authentic lamb stew with a subtle mixture of apricots, chickpeas, potatoes, carrots, cinnamon and herbs. The authentic Pinsa Romana (Roman-style pizza) is a must to share and comes in myriad combinations, while the fresh fish (caught locally and flown in from the Mediterranean) can be served Italian- or Moroccan-style or simply with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. The dessert presentation is, in a word, charming, and comes as a treasure trove of individual postcards with authentic stamps, descriptions and wine pairings, and a “note” from the sender to the chef, as though Nonna were sharing her family recipe with the world. While they are all exquisite, our hands-down favorite was Moroccan Ma’ancha—meaning “snake”—made with rolled phyllo pastry and filled with dates, figs, walnuts and honey. The wine list deserves special attention and mention for its uncommon selection, as Delogu, who is both owner and sommelier, has scoured the Mediterranean to offer some of the most exceptional

116

OCTOBER 2017

under-the-radar boutique wines grown and bottled at the source, many available by the glass, and all presented on a colorful map, allowing guests to pinpoint their origins. “Our wine program is about originality,” explains Delogu. “We want to ensure that customers discover new gems and find a perfect match for their meal that will further enhance the flavor profiles from that region.” The wine is so extraordinary, we recommend ordering a different glass with each course. La Cattura, which we had with the grouperstuffed pasta, is made from the only Teroldego grape that grows in Tuscany and is blended with 15 percent Syrah. At $11 a glass, it is a steal for such a rare find, and this is reportedly the only Miami restaurant that offers it by the glass. The Grillo from Sardinia and Raboso Rosé from Venice are new to the Miami market; the Manto Negro only grows on Mallorca. A treat for any oenophile, 80 percent of Panarea’s wine selection is small-production and bio-organic. As if all this weren’t enough, grab a friend and learn how to make Chef Sandri’s house-made mozzarella the last Wednesday of every month. The convivial gathering is more than just cheese-making. It’s an evening with family. Panarea Mediterranean Sea Grill is located at 11052 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida 33161. For more information, call 305-640-5580 or visit panareaseagrill.com.

BMW 6-SERIES

Gran Coupe

V.

6-SERIES

Gran Turismo

BMW’s 6-Series takes on “Gran” new forms, and we’re here to sort out any Gran confusion. By Steve Siler

B

ack in my youth, BMW’s nomenclature made sense. There were three basic lines of sedans—denoted by numbers 3, 5, and 7—and a sexy, shark-nosed 6-Series coupe. Each car’s number series was followed by two additional numbers signifying the displacement of the engine. So a 525i, for example, was a mid-size 5-Series model powered by a 2.5-liter engine that was fuel injected (hence the “i” in 525i). Then the 2000s happened, and BMW assigned its various coupe models even number names like 2-series and 4-series, and its new SUV models “X” names that corresponded roughly to the car model with which it shared its platform components. Things started to get confusing when BMW’s four-door “Gran Coupes,” its so-called “Gran Turismo” 5-door hatchbacks, and fastback “coupe” versions of its SUVs came along right about the same time that BMW’s new turbocharged and hybrid powertrains rendered the two engine-size numbers irrelevant. Which leads us to today. The 6-Series two-door coupe is dead—long live the Six!—to be succeeded by a saucy new 8-Series coupe line in the future. For now, the 6-Series is still available as a convertible and as a four-door Gran Coupe, and also as a 5-door Gran Turismo hatchback, which is basically the successor to last year’s geeky 5-Series Gran Turismo. Lighter and sleeker than before, the new 6-Series Gran Turismo has almost nothing in common with the other Sixers, but it’s a fine car, whatever it’s called. After all, especially at BMW, what’s in a name?

118

OCTOBER 2017

2018 BMW 6-SERIES GRAN TURISMO

If you think of the 6-Series Gran Turismo as more or less a 5-Series hatchback and not a variant of the current 6-Series lineup, you’re spot on. That said, it’s no mere fastback version of the Five; it sits a bit higher and has a higher-pitched roof than that car, which results in a look that’s a bit controversial and, well, butt-heavy, but it’s certainly more attractive than last year’s 5-Series Gran Turismo, which was taller still. The payoff comes in the form of a very roomy rear seating area and a tremendous amount of cargo space behind its split folding rear seatbacks. Based as it is on the new 5-Series, not the previous model, it benefits from that car’s newfound premium-ness inside, which cannot be overstated. It also has lost a massive amount of weight—some 330 pounds—compared to its predecessor, benefitting handling, brake performance, and efficiency.

Wheel Life

For now, the only model we will get in the U.S. is the 640i Gran Turismo xDrive, powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 335 hp and a snappy eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, with all-wheel drive standard. Base prices start at a heady $70,695, which is nearly $11,950 more than a 540i xDrive sedan and $6500 over the outgoing 535i xDrive Gran Turismo.

2018 BMW 6-SERIES GRAN COUPE

The 6-Series Gran Coupe is essentially a 6-Series coupe—may it rest in peace—stretched into a slinky sedan body but which retains the coupe’s low-roof look, frameless door glass, and yes, snug rear seats. Under the skin, it’s little more than a comparably powered 5-Series sedan—the previous generation 5-Series model, that is. The 6-Series Gran Coupe has been out there beautifying our roads for a few years now, and it’ll probably remain with us for at least another year or two until BMW either renews its lease on life under the 6-Series moniker, or more likely, migrates the Gran Coupe models to the 8-Series family, adopting its saucier look and, yes, higher price point. For the U.S., the base model is the 640i, powered by a 315-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a snappy eight-speed transmission, with a 445-hp turbocharged V-8 available as an upgrade. If that’s not enough, BMW is happy to sell this car to you in M6 or Alpina B6 form, each with

up to 600 hp and performance envelopes bordering on the obscene. Pretty though they may be, the 6 Gran Coupes are as cramped inside and impractical as the Gran Turismo is roomy and practical.
