inWeston Magazine

In putting together this first “Best Self” edition of inWeston, we discovered one thing is certain: Weston as a community is a microcosm of the health- and fitness-savvy (obsessed?) region that is South Florida. From busy professionals to time-challenged stayat-home moms, we all aspire to do what it takes to keep our energy levels up, feel vital, look good, and stay generally healthy through and through. It’s really a no-brainer. Here’s the good part: Any and all resources you could need or want for this are right here, if not in your own neighborhood then definitely right around a corner (or two). From dermatologists to plastic surgeons, weight loss centers to athletic clubs and personal trainers, cosmetic dentists to cardiologists, the best of the best have put down roots and hung out their shingles in West Broward. If you’re so busy racing from day to day that you haven’t had a chance to seek out these experts and are completely unaware of who and what’s at your disposal, don’t worry—that’s why we’re here. To bring you the latest and greatest on the methods and the people behind them, including their backgrounds and credentials. In this edition you’ll find insight into fitness, medical and aesthetic options you may not even know exist, and bring you up to speed on what’s going on in South Florida with regard to all three. As always, we invite your feedback, so chime in on any topic you like and let us know what you enjoyed and might want to see next time. In the meantime, enjoy the issue.

stress less Florida may be Stress Central, but you can untangle your nerves with a few good yoga poses. According to the U.S. Census’ American Community Survey, Florida is the country’s most stressed-out state. Despite our beaches and attractions, the study blames long commutes, unemployment and working hours for the Sunshine State’s woes. The least stressed-out state, on the other hand, was North Dakota—so next time you think about that as being a boring place, remember, its residents probably have lower blood pressure and fewer gray hairs than you do.

The Drive to Succeed

Intimacy hosts a bra drive in support of Free the Girls to provide lingerie to rescued victims of human trafficking.

Throughout the month of October this year, every INTIMACY {bra fit stylists} store across the United States will participate in a bra drive in support of Free The Girls organization by asking clients to bring in their gently used bras and donate them to the charity that helps women who have been rescued from sex trafficking. These women in turn sell the secondhand bras in their communities to earn a living while they attend school, get healthy and care for their families. “After last year’s success, we decided that we would have to make this bra drive for Free The Girls an annual event,” says Kelly Schmidt, director of marketing at INTIMACY. “We donated more than 7,500 bras to the organization in 2013 and hope that we will be able to surpass that donation number this year.” For every bra that a client donates at an INTIMACY store, the client will receive $10 off any bra purchase. This program urges women to clean out their lingerie wardrobes and to add in new and updated styles all while giving away pieces that are no longer being worn or might not fit anymore. “Admit it, ladies, every one of us has a stash of practically new but rarely worn bras in the back of our lingerie drawers,” says Melissa Watson, Free The Girls national director. “This is the perfect opportunity to clean out those ill-fitting bras and receive $10 toward the purchase of new, great-fitting bras. Even better, your donated bras will help employ a survivor of sex trafficking in a developing country while providing many more women the opportunity to enjoy the basic dignity of owning and wearing properly-fitting undergarments.” You can bring your donations to INTIMACY, Aventura Mall, or visit myintimacy.com.

“Thanks to our unique focus on pediatrics, our specialists are well-versed in the early markers and milestones our patients should be hitting,” explains Jamie Tarshis. “Our specialists work with children all day, every day. They have a passion for helping children and their families.”  To that end, the center is equipped to help children dealing with a number of ailments, from straightforward developmental delays to more complicated cases of cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and autism, with a majority of their patients falling into the latter category. Patients have a variety of therapeutic methods at their disposal, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and an aquatics program. Tarshis, who is also responsible for the aquatics program, adds, “The MCH Dan Marino Outpatient Center is one of only a few providers in South Florida currently using this tremendous tool for pediatric rehabilitation. In some cases, the different modality, which provides a unique sensory experience, assists patients in achieving the goals we set for them.”  The center also houses an applied behavior program for children on the autism spectrum, a diagnostics component and an orthopedics sports program staffed by physical therapists with a pediatrics specialty.

WOMAN’S TOUCH ESSE PLASTIC SURGERY UNITES TWO FEMALE DOCTORS WHO WANT TO GIVE WOMEN A WOMAN’S PERSPECTIVE. By John Buchanan Esse Plastic Surgery combines the exemplary credentials and experience of two acclaimed female plastic surgeons, Dr. Tracey Stokes and Dr. Laura Sudarsky. Both are Board-certified plastic surgeons. Between them, they have more than 35 years of experience. Dr. Stokes attended Harvard University, then received her medical degree, with honors, at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City. She completed her general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery training at Duke University Medical Center. She continued her training in aesthetic and oculoplastic surgery at Paces Plastic Surgery in Atlanta. Dr. Sudarsky is the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in New York. After receiving her undergraduate and medical school degrees at New York University, where she graduated cum laude, she completed surgical residency training at the world-renowned Bellevue Hospital in New York and became chief resident at NYU Hospital. She then completed her plastic surgery residency at Yale University Medical School.

Dr. Tracey Stokes and Dr. Laura Sudarsky of Esse Plastic Surgery

Q:1

What sets you apart from other plastic surgeons? “We are two top female plastic surgeons with exceptional educational credentials,” Dr. Stokes says. “The factor that is most important is that we are female. According to some estimates, only one in nine plastic surgeons in the US is a woman. That fact is especially significant because the majority of plastic surgery patients—91 percent, in fact—are women. We’re trying to change that dynamic, meaning that instead of men imposing their aesthetic ideals onto women patients, we hope to empower women to achieve the greatest beauty and happiness.”

Q:2

What are your specialties? “We specialize in all areas of breast surgery, including breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lifts and breast reconstruction for women who have had cancer,” Dr. Sudarsky says. “One of our particular areas of specialty is matching breasts. That means if one breast has been altered or removed because of cancer, we match the reconstructed breast to the healthy,

38

inWeston Magazine

normal breast. We also specialize in so-called revisional surgery, which means doing new and additional surgery for women who are unhappy for any reason with their prior surgery.”

Q:3

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Why is that so significant? “Unfortunately many, many women do not seek breast reconstruction after experiencing cancer,” Dr. Stokes says. “In fact, fewer than 50 percent of women seek breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. So we really want to promote that the option of breast reconstruction is out there for women. And we have the privilege of being one of the 15 centers in the US in an FDA trial for a new device called the Airxpander. It means that instead of the patient’s breast being filled by a doctor with a needle, it’s filled with air by remote control. And that means a more pain-free procedure and the patient has control over the system. It represents a major innovation.” Esse Plastic Surgery, 6333 N. Chris Wing, administrator at Broward Health Weston

Q:1

What factors distinguish your imaging center?

MEDICAL BENEFITS

BROWARD HEALTH WESTON OFFERS HOSPITAL-QUALITY IMAGING AND URGENT CARE SERVICES LESS EXPENSIVELY. By John Buchanan Opened in June 2000, the 80,000-square-foot, Mediterranean-style Broward Health Weston includes an imaging center, an urgent care center and a women’s center. The locally owned facility is operated by the Broward Health System. “That means that one of the things that sets us apart is the fact that the physicians who work in our facility are part of the same physician groups that work at the Broward Health hospitals,” says administrator Chris Wing. “They’re all Board-certified radiologists and emergency room physicians.” At Broward Health Weston, there are 12 radiologists and eight urgent care physicians. Walk-in patients without appointments are welcome at the imaging center, where they can also expect quicker turnaround times than at a hospital—that usually means within 24 hours. Most insurance plans are accepted. Broward Health Weston also boasts a highly credentialed and experienced team of emergency room physicians in its urgent care center and the only hospital-owned, freestanding women’s center in the area. All three facilities offer the benefit of cost savings over a hospital.

“The first thing is that even though we are part of the Broward Health system and have their backing with Board-certified radiologists, high-quality equipment and special training for the staff, we are licensed as a freestanding imaging center. That effectively means it’s a more cost-effective place to have your tests done. Many of the insurance companies have now created incentives for their members to go to these freestanding imaging centers because they are less expensive. We do X-rays, CT scans and ultrasound. We also have state-of-the-art equipment, such as a 1.5 Tesla MRI. Our CT system is 128-slice.”

Q:2

What about your urgent care center? “Our urgent-care center is open seven days a week. It’s also open after hours during the week and on weekends. However, because it’s part of Broward Health, you’re getting Boardcertified emergency room physicians. But in addition, you’re also not going to be exposed to the long waits and turnaround times that are typically associated with a hospital emergency room, where you can wait for six or eight hours. With us, you’re in and out in about an hour.”

Q:3

What is the significance of your women’s health center? “What’s significant is that we have a separate and distinct women’s center. It’s separate from the main imaging center. It’s a private suite and it has an all-female staff. And within it, we provide mammography, ultrasound and bone density testing. There are other women’s centers in the area, but they are all hospital-based. So this is really the only hospital-owned, freestanding women’s center. And again, that means the same benefits as our main imaging center and urgent-care center, which is that the tests are significantly less expensive than they are at a hospital. The facility has also recently been remodeled.” Broward Health Weston, 2300 North Commerce Pkwy., Weston, 954.217.5.000; browardhealth.org.

“We are centered on the entire human being and not just their teeth.”

DENTAL PHILOSOPHY DR. JOAQUIN ZAGARRA ADDRESSES THE ENTIRE PATIENT, NOT JUST HIS OR HER TEETH. By John Buchanan

Dr. Joaquin Zagarra is a veteran orthodontist who treats both adults and children. Born in Colombia, he has more than three decades of experience. A 1981 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, he practiced dentistry in his native Colombia before emigrating to the US in 2002 as a professor of orthodontics at Nova Southeastern University. Before that, he taught at the college level for almost a decade in Colombia. He was licensed to

Q:1

What makes you different from other orthodontists?

Dr. Joaquin Zagarra of Zagarra Orthodontics

inWeston Magazine

“Our philosophy is a little bit different from many dentists. We are always most interested in the entire person. That’s the way we run our practice and treat people. However, we are also very focused on aesthetics and overall dental health, because those are the things that are ultimately most important to our patients in the long run. As a result, we exercise rigorous application of clinical asepsis and oral hygiene. We perform highly individualized diagnoses and treatment planning. And we use good communication and creativity to do the best possible job we can for every patient. We also use state-of-theart technology and pursue continuing education to stay abreast of the latest developments in dentistry.”

practice in Florida in 2006 and began practicing as an associate dentist at a Plantation dental office. “While I was working at the practice in Plantation, I saw that many of my patients were coming from Weston,” he says. “And I had also been living in Weston since 2002. So it was an easy decision to open my practice in Weston.” He left Nova Southeastern University in 2008 and opened Zagarra Orthodontics in 2009.

Q:2

What are your specialties? “We see a lot of kids. At least 60 to 70 percent of our patients are children. It’s important that children start dental care early in life. We specialize in addressing issues such as a bilateral posterior cross-bite, which could be associated with TMJ and/or muscular problems. In both examples, early correction is easy, but if left untreated it could become much more complicated and even require surgery later. In fact, all problems that arise from dental habits should be treated early, first by eliminating the habit and then with proper treatment. When habits are detected and eliminated early enough, many times the body will get everything back to normal even without the aid of orthodontic appliances or any intervention by the orthodontist.”

Q:3

What’s most important for prospective patients to understand about you? “My experience is very important for new patients to understand. I’ve been doing orthodontics for more than 30 years. I have also been a university professor of orthodontics at the graduate student level. That means I’ve taught other dentists to become orthodontists. I’ve been doing that since I graduated from dental school. We also have an international staff of former dentists who now support me, and a beautiful, very comfortable, modern office. It is also paperless. Everything is digital. And that makes things very easy for our patients.” Zagarra Orthodontics, 2711 Executive Park Dr., Ste. 4, Weston, 954.321.5600; doctorzag.com.

Massimo Policastro, general manager of Midtown Athletic Club

MIDTOWN MEETUP

MIDTOWN ATHleTIC CLUB IS MORE THAN A STATE-OF-THE-ART FITNESS FACILITY. IT’S ALSO A TENNIS INSTITUTION AND SOCIAL CLUB. By John Buchanan For three decades, Midtown Athletic Club has reigned as the premier healthand-fitness venue in Weston for individuals, families, professional athletes and celebrities. The only resort-style private club in the area, the complex features more than 12,000 square feet of state-of-the-art exercise equipment, 25 outdoor tennis courts, four dedicated fitness studios, three outdoor pools, a full-service spa, and more than 100 group fitness classes weekly. In early September, Midtown debuted a completely renovated facility that features all-new equipment. “We never stop improving our facility,” says new general manager Massimo Policastro, who was recruited a year ago from Milan, Italy, where he ran one of the country’s top facilities for 18 years. Programs at Midtown include fitness and personal training, tennis, mind-body, sports activities including a soccer field, and aquatics. Among Midtown’s specialties are tennis programs for adults and children, as well as platform tennis. The facility also features the Spa at Midtown, a pro shop and a Kids Town program for children.

Q:1

What are the tennis credentials that really set Midtown apart? “We are part of the Tennis Corporation of America (TCA). For 30 years, we have provided the best instruction by the leading coaches in the premier playing environment in the area. We also offer the most challenging and fun league and team programs available. We don’t just offer court time. We actively create and develop tennis players of all ages. Our innovative teaching systems have taught thousands of adults and young players. We also have a high-performance program led by Luis Brest and Laurent LeClerc.”

Q:2

What about fitness and personal training programs? “Midtown offers a wide variety of group classes per week, held in state-of-the-art fitness studios and dedicated cycling studios. Our group classes, including Zumba, Pilates, yoga, and cycling, are tiered by level of difficulty and each class offers a different benefit, whether your goal is to burn calories, tone up, boost cardiovascular endurance, improve your game or add some flair to your moves on the dance floor. We also offer pure cardio classes, as well as mixed cardio and strength-training classes, from traditional step aerobics to cycling, kickboxing, martial arts, and dance. We also have a new program led by John Sinclair, one of the best fitness directors in the area.”

Q:3

What other benefits does Midtown offer? “We are definitely at the center of the health-andfitness lifestyle in Weston. And that includes a social component. For example, our new M Cafe, which opened a year ago, is a great spot for lunch and dinner. It serves healthy, delicious food and is a wonderful place in the evening for both members and non-members. We have a weekly happy hour. We offer family dinners and romantic dinners for couples. M Cafe also does takeout, so members can take home a healthy meal after their workout.” Midtown Athletic Club, 2300 Royal Palm Blvd., Weston, 954.384.2582; Midtown.com/clubs/weston-athletictennis-club.

Dr. Cassann Blake of Cleveland Clinic Florida

Q:1

What is the epidemiology of breast cancer?

STELLAR REPUTATION

CLEVELAND CLINIC BOASTS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED NAMES IN HEALTH CARE, WITH A SPECIALIZATION IN BREAST CANCER. By John Buchanan Cleveland Clinic is perennially ranked as one of the top hospitals in the US. It is a notfor-profit, multi-specialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. Cleveland Clinic Florida, with facilities in Weston, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Parkland, has 230 physicians with expertise in 35 specialties who are experts in the treatment of complex, difficult to diagnose conditions. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s comprehensive approach to cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery means that patients receive support and guidance from a dedicated team of experts. This method not only helps patients fight the disease, but also provides comfort and strength along their journey. Cleveland Clinic has also been a pioneer in breast reconstruction techniques. Its medical team includes fellowship-trained breast surgeons, oncologists, plastic surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists, as well as nurses and a Breast Navigator who work collaboratively to treat patients with breast cancer.

“Only 3 percent of the state’s ACcredited centers are recognized as breast imaging centers of excellence. That attests to the extraordinary quality and competence of what we do.”

46

inWeston Magazine

“A gene can develop an abnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes. There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, high-risk women can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes. However, genetic testing is done only when definitely indicated by a personal or a strong family history. Genetic testing might also be used to determine if a woman who has already been diagnosed with breast cancer is at increased risk for a breast cancer reoccurrence or ovarian cancer.”

Q:2

What are Cleveland Clinic’s breast cancer treatment options? “Our Breast Center has earned a three-year/ full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) from the American College of Surgeons. A range of treatment options is available to patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. They include surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and clinical trials, to name a few. Cleveland Clinic’s team of breast care specialists will help to determine the best treatment plan based on the type of breast cancer, size and location of the tumor, disease stage, lab test results, and a patient’s overall health. Our approach is very comprehensive.”

Q:3

What should prospective patients know about your imaging center? “Cleveland Clinic Florida’s accredited Women’s Imaging Center provides state-of-the-art screening in a soothing environment. The Center makes early and accurate detection a priority, offering digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast CAD (computer aided detection). Both our Weston and West Palm Beach locations have been designated Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The Centers are part of an elite group in Florida to achieve this level of excellence. Only 3 percent of the state’s nearly 500 ACR-accredited centers are recognized as breast imaging centers of excellence. That attests to the extraordinary quality and competence of what we do.” Cleveland Clinic Florida, 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd., Weston, 954.659.5000; clevelandclinic.org.

LEAN & MEAN SCS WEIGHT LOSS SYSTEMS OFFERS A REVOLUTIONARY SERIES OF PROGRAMS THAT TAKE POUNDS OFF AND KEEP THEM OFF. By John Buchanan

SCS Weight Loss Systems, located in Lorei Spa, represents a breakthrough in health and wellness consultation. Founded five years ago by Sarah Strock, SCS Weight Loss offers six programs tailored to the individual needs of specific types of clients. “I wanted to do something involved in weight loss and wellness, because having done hundreds of diets myself, I felt that the missing component

Q:1

What is hCG and why is it so effective?

Sarah Strock, founder and owner of SCS Weight Loss Systems

48

inWeston Magazine

“Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, known as hCG, is found in pregnant women. It taps into stored body fat to protect the fetus during pregnancy and effectively utilizes stored and abnormal fat when administered for weight reduction. Realistically speaking, a client can lose 25 to 30 pounds in 30 days. That is not the average; that is the norm. And patients only lose fat, they never lose muscle mass. After a complete medical screening, including EKG and required blood panels, SCS Weight Loss System guides you step-by-step through a four-week program. Based on the way we have our hCG compounded, you will lose weight but still have an enormous amount of energy. You will also not feel hungry.”

for success was always about the issue of really feeling good while you’re consuming a restricted number of calories,” Strock says. “I also knew I wanted to partner with the medical community, which I did.” She recruited Dr. Tracey Stokes, a top local plastic surgeon, to be her medical director. Each new patient is given a full medical screening and supervised throughout the weight loss process.

Q:2

What is “Clean & Lean?” “Clean & Lean is for the person who either is already a vegetarian or wants to become a vegetarian. It represents a lifestyle—and a lifestyle change for someone who is new to being a vegetarian. It delivers immediate health results. It is also structured as a four-week program, which includes recipes and weekly lipotropic injections, which help catalyze the breakdown of fat during metabolism in the body. Like hCG, Clean & Lean also generates tremendous results. Patients can usually lose 20 pounds in four weeks. The big motivator with Clean and Lean is that it really does represent an important and healthful lifestyle change. For example, your cholesterol goes down. Your blood sugar level goes down. But you also lose weight.”

Q:3

What is “Muscle Up Metabolism?” “Muscle Up Metabolism is very beneficial for specific kinds of patients. For example, it’s very beneficial for women who are going through menopause or for men whose metabolism has slowed down, but who want to get lean. It’s also designed as a four-week program. The way we structure the food for the four weeks—which is low-fat and high fat in intervals—is based on the fact that the cycles of food are specifically designed to speed up your metabolism. And we constantly mix things up so that your metabolism doesn’t get used to just one kind of eating and metabolic reaction. That maximizes your results and also keeps your metabolism fired up.” SCS Weight Loss & Wellness Systems, locations in Weston and Fort Lauderdale, 954.640.9222; scsweightloss.com.

Dr. Joanna Tewfik, Baptist Health

Q:1

What is your best tip for maintaining good breast health? “The American Cancer Society recommends that beginning in your 20s, you examine your breasts regularly and observe how they normally look and feel. Breasts change throughout your menstrual cycle, so examine them on a monthly schedule, when they’re not tender or swollen. Breast selfexams can be performed lying on your back, in the shower or in front of a mirror—wherever you feel comfortable.”

It was also recognized as one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” for the fourth year in a row by the Ethisphere Institute.

Q:2

When should women start getting mammograms? “The American College of Radiology recommends that every woman begin getting annual screening mammograms at age 40, unless she has a family history of breast carcinoma in a first-degree relative, which means mother, sister or daughter, in which case she should begin screening mammograms five years prior to the age of diagnosis of the relative’s breast cancer. Women with a strong family history of breast carcinoma and others at high risk may also be candidates for yearly breast MRI examinations. According to the American Cancer Society, digital mammography, with an early detection rate of 89 percent, is still the best screening tool for breast cancer. Baptist Health’s diagnostic centers feature advanced digital technology, compassionate and professional care and a physician team specializing in breast health.”

Q:3

What are the breast health capabilities of Baptist Health? “Baptist Health is committed to helping women and men live longer, healthier lives. We have dedicated radiologists specializing in breast health working at Baptist Medical Plaza in Davie and remotely covering Baptist Medical Plaza at Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines. In other words, you can rest assured that a breast-specialized, Boardcertified radiologist will review your results and make recommendations. Dr. Christopher Tirotta

Q:1

House calls seem to be a thing of the past. What gave you the idea to go this route?

The Ultimate Luxury Dr. Christopher Tirotta brings his services directly to his clients, keeping them happy, comfortable and safe in their own home. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer An anesthesiologist by trade, Christopher Tirotta, MD, MDA, has been expanding his horizons as of late. While he continues to practice this delicate branch of medicine, he has begun making house calls for a different reason. His year-old business, Aesthetic House Calls, provides clients with injectables and fillers in the comfort of their own homes. “I wanted to differentiate myself from others in the area offering the same services, so I’ve made myself directly available to my patients by performing these injections in the privacy of their own homes,” says Tirotta. “Plus, I keep my prices incredibly competitive. There’s a subset of patients who are regulars, but another group, probably about 10 times larger, that is interested but have held back due to the price.” In addition to making house calls and doing Botox parties, Tirotta is hoping to expand his services to local area hotels and spas. “I know hotel guests would be very interested. When you’re on vacation, you’re in relaxation mode and ready to pamper yourself.”

“I would say 95 percent of my patients prefer me to come to them. “

52

inWeston Magazine

“Home healthcare is growing with the aging population, so it’s not as uncommon today as it was a few years ago. It was actually my wife’s suggestion, and I thought it made good sense. So many people are now offering these services—many who have no experience with it—as a way to make extra cash. I wanted to offer my patients something not only incredibly convenient, but also safe. Safety is definitely my top priority.”

Q:2

For those clients that would rather come to you, do you have a home office? “Absolutely. I have a business office in the Weston Town Center, but I see patients in their homes, in health spas, hair salons, etc. I usually stay in and around Weston and the western Fort Lauderdale communities, but I’m happy to go further if the situation calls for it.”

Q:3

What are some of the latest injectables that are growing in popularity? “Voluma, a new dermal filler, is definitely hot right now, and providing stiff competition for Radiesse when used in the cheeks. I’m working on getting certified in that since many of my patients are requesting it. I’m also thinking about offering sclerotherapy to treat spider veins in the legs and dermal abrasions.”

Q:4

What keeps you excited about your work? “I compare the work I do to that of a hairdresser. I appreciate the artistic side of it, counseling patients as I listen to what they want and helping them decide what will work best for their particular set of needs and bone structure.” Aesthetic House Calls, LLC, 1792 Bell Tower Lane, Weston, 954.369.5568; aesthetichousecalls.biz.

LIFE CYCLE TRUJILLO MEDICAL CENTER IS A PRIMARY CARE FAMILY MEDICAL CLINIC THAT TREATS PATIENTS OF ALL AGES. By John Buchanan

Trujillo Medical Center is a family care medical clinic that offers a full range of primary and specialty services. Founder and medical director Dr. Yaneth Trujillo is dedicated to providing highquality, comprehensive primary and preventive care for the whole family. Born in Colombia, she attended medical school at Universidad Juan N. Corpas in Bogotá, graduating in 1995. After moving to the US in 2000, she returned home after her father died suddenly as a result

Q:1

Why is preventive care so important?

“As a family doctor, I tell my patients that prevention is the first line of defense for any patient. A comprehensive preventive care program can lower your odds of serious illness. For example, preventable risk factors such as avoiding tobacco use, maintaining your proper weight and exercising regularly can significantly reduce your risk of illness. I counsel my patients on effective, healthy lifestyle strategies that will eliminate or reduce risk factors. The older you get the higher the risk for different type of diseases depending on genetic predispositions and environmental exposure.”

of inadequate medical care. At that moment, she decided to become a primary family-care physician. She began her practice in Puerto Rico in 2004 and later came to South Florida. She founded Trujillo Medical Center in 2009. Trujillo Medical Center provides a wide array of general health-care services, including vaccinations, sport physicals, wellness exams and laboratory services. It also performs minor procedures such as wart and skin tag removal, skin biopsies and wound care.

Q:2

Why are regular medical checkups so important? “Regular health exams and tests can help find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, before the disease becomes serious, when it can be easily treated. Regular medical check-ups enable a primary care physician to take remedial action in time. They not only help early detection of cancer and other life-threatening diseases, but also allow your primary care physician to follow your development throughout the years and keep records of important events. When administering treatment, all this medical history proves to be incredibly useful for your primary-care physician and/or specialist who may later be treating a patient for a specific condition.”

Q:3

Why do you emphasize the importance of controlling chronic conditions? “Chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, COPD, arthritis and osteoporosis are a major concern for any primary-care physician. All of those conditions, and others, require good communication between a patient and his or her primary-care doctor. Patients with a chronic condition must be made aware of the importance of following up with their doctor. Chronic conditions are among the most common conditions that can shorten a patient’s life span. However, when a chronic condition is under control, the patient can lead the same quality of life as any normal, healthy patient would.”

“The benefits of the new surgery are less pain, smaller wounds and faster recovery times.”

UNIQUE CREDENTIALS ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON DR. FERNANDO MOYA OFFERS A RARE COMBINATION OF MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGIcAL DEGREES. By John Buchanan

Dr. Fernando A. Moya is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University and received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.) He completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Puerto Rico, and holds a master’s and a doctoral degree in pharmacology from The Massachusetts College of Pharmacology. He is currently team physician for Pembroke Pines Charter High School, and actively involved in community

“One area of specialty that truly sets me apart is single-portal arthroscopic surgery. According to Stryker, which developed the technique, I am the only doctor in Florida and one of just 32 in the US who perform that surgery. The entire surgery is done through that tiny hole. The technique is brand new and I just started doing it this year. Stryker selected me to do the surgery in Florida because I do a lot of complex knee and shoulder surgeries and a lot of arthroscopic surgeries. And you have to be very advanced in arthroscopic techniques to be able to use this technique. The benefits of the new surgery are less pain, smaller wounds and faster recovery times.”

seminars and educational programs designed to help people understand joint pain and sports injuries. Dr. Moya is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, Broward County Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, Florida Orthopedic Society/Bones Society of Florida. He is the director of joint surgery at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida, P.A.

Q:2

What else sets you apart? “I am a knee and shoulder specialist. So another important area of my specialization and something else that sets me apart is what I call ‘biologics.’ I am now going to be integrating surgery with biologics, which means supplementing the surgery with medications, stem cells and PRP from our bodies to help reinforce the things we rebuild in the operating room. And again, that means less pain and faster healing. Everything I do is based on achieving those two goals for the patient. And in practical terms for active people, that means getting back onto the playing field faster, too. My other goal is always to make the wound from surgery as small as possible.”

Q:3

What is most important for prospective patients to understand? “Even though I am a surgeon, only about 5-10 percent of my patients actually undergo surgery. And part of that is because a non-surgical approach is always my first choice for my patients. My goal is always to get you pain-free and fully functional and back on the playing field without surgery. Surgery is always the last resort, after I have done everything else I can to make you better. And that is where my pharmacological education and expertise come into play. The ability to expertly treat patients with medications rather than just doing surgery is really what makes me different from other doctors.”

Maxine Sadhai, Psy. D.

Q:1

Why perform psychological evaluations of children with learning disabilities?

HELPING HAND

PSYCHOLOGIST MAXINE SADHAI WORKS WITH CHILDREN, ADULTS AND FAMILIES TO ADDRESS A RANGE OF ISSUES. By John Buchanan Maxine Sadhai, Psy. D., is licensed psychologist with a specialty in neuropsychology. Her private practice, which opened in Weston in October 2010, serves children, adults and senior citizens, but specializes in children with learning disabilities or behavioral problems. She is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in experimental psychology in 1993, a Bachelor’s degree in social psychology in 1994, and a Master’s degree in mental health counseling in 1997. She earned her doctorate in psychology from Carlos Albizu University, formerly known as Miami Institute of Psychology, in 2007. Her career path manifested as she got her undergraduate degrees and then her Master’s. “After I received my master’s degree, I worked a lot with children,” she says. “I did in-home counseling and worked with a lot of families. I decided that I wanted to expand further and delve deeper into the field. And that’s why I decided to go back and get a doctoral degree. I wanted to do more than just behavioral therapy.”

“Learning disabilities can make it difficult for even the most driven and intelligent child to function in a classroom setting. Even a high-functioning, high-I.Q. child can struggle with behavior problems and attention deficit. Whether your child struggles with reading, verbal communication or attention disorders, his or her teachers can take special measures if they know what a neurological evaluation finds. And what I do is a much more thorough evaluation than what schools do. I focus on every aspect of their functioning—their I.Q., their achievement level in school, and anything else that could be the source of the problem.”

Q:2

Why do evaluations of children with behavioral problems? “If a child has a difficult time paying attention in class, or is known for causing disruptions, it’s important to pinpoint specific behavior disorders and find solutions. That helps parents and teachers become more effective in providing discipline and holding the child’s attention. Problems can include attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Tourette’s Syndrome, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety and depression, and adjustment disorders. So the focus is on determining what the underlying issues are and why they’re acting out and having problems. Then it’s a matter of targeting the intervention to the specific issue.”

Q:3

What are neuropsychological evaluations? “A neuropsychological evaluation involves testing that is sensitive to problems with brain function. Unlike CT or MRI scans, which show what the structure of the brain looks like, neuropsychological testing examines how well the brain is working when it performs certain functions, such as remembering. The types of tests depend upon the questions that a doctor and patient have. For example, we can assess attention and memory, reasoning and problem solving, visual-spatial functions, language functions, sensory-perceptual functions, motor functions and academic skills, or early onset dementia in older people. The tests allow me to find possible problems with brain functioning and form a diagnosis. The tests are not invasive. They do not involve attaching you to machines or using X-rays.” Maxine A. Sadhai, Psy. D., 2813 Executive Park Dr., Ste. 105, Weston, 954.439.5446; maxinesadhai.com.

PERSONAL CARE AFTER MASTERING HIS DISCIPLINE AND relocATING TO THE U.S., DR. ANDRES CARBUNARU HAS A THRIVING DENTAL PRACTICE IN WESTON. By John Buchanan

Dr. Andres Carbunaru has spent nearly two decades as a highly credentialed prosthodontist. He has extensive experience in cosmetic, restorative and implant dentistry. He graduated in 1993 from the Universidad Central de Venezuela Dental School. He then attended Columbia University in New York and in 1997 received a Master of Science degree in Prosthodontics. From 1997 until 2009, he maintained a private practice in Caracas, Venezuela,

“We are sincerely committed to sitting with patients and explaining their problems and the best treatments. We also make sure they are anxietyfree and that they have no pain, that they are comfortable with what we are doing. That makes us different from many other dental practices, because even though all of them say they do those things, most of them don’t really devote the amount of time required to really talk with patients and make them comfortable. And that’s very important, because everyone is scared of the dentist.”

before relocating to United States. He is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists and is Board-eligible by the American Board of Prosthodontists. He and his family recently moved to South Florida to take over 10-year-old Weston Dental Care, which provides general and specialized dental care. “The possibilities with your smile are limitless,” Dr. Carbunaru says. “I take pride in offering the finest in patient care and services to each and every patient.”

Q:2

What defines your philosophy? “We believe that right now, in the practice of general dentistry, the training that new dentists receive is hardly sufficient for today’s environment. And as a result, we believe that the dentists that work at a truly professional practice should all be specialists that also have advanced degrees. It’s important for patients to know that every dentist in the practice has the knowledge and skills within their area of specialty to be able to diagnose and treat any kind of dental problem effectively.”

Q:3

What else really sets you apart? “We offer all of the areas of dental specialty in a single office. That means that whether you need dental implants, porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges, an Invisalign straightening system, or teeth whitening, we can provide complete dental care in one location. And we also do everything from regular checkups to advanced procedures to cosmetic work. We also provide sleep apnea and snoring therapy. You can find everything you need here. And we do it all with state-of-the-art equipment and sterilization techniques.” Weston Dental Care, 2235 N. Commerce Pkwy., Ste. 1,Weston, 954.389.1212; westondental.com.

Scott Harris, co-founder and CEO of DeliverLean

Q:1

What sets DeliverLean apart?

The new OnJuice location at Aventura Mall offers hungry shoppers quick healthy snacks.

EAT HEALTHY, SAVE TIME

SCOTT HARRIS AND OLGA KUZENKOV CREATED DELIVERLEAN TO OFFER BUSY PROFESSIONALS HEALTHY MEALS DELIVERED FRESH TO THEIR DOOR. By John Buchanan Scott Harris is a successful businessman who ran call centers when he realized the impact that eating lunch had on him and his employees. “I’ve always looked for opportunities,” says the 43-year-old cofounder and CEO of Oakland Park-based DeliverLean, an innovative provider of healthy meals that are prepared fresh and delivered daily to the homes of subscribers. “And being a busy professional, I was always challenged with time and eating healthy food in the workplace. Just as it is for any busy professional person, it was always really challenging, time-consuming and expensive.” He also discovered that 35 percent of his work day—and those of his 250 employees—was spent on “the distractions of lunch. That meant 30 minutes with everyone in my office to figure out what to eat, an hour to go eat, and an hour to get reactivated once everyone returned to the office,” he says. “So, I hired a chef. And that chef started making calorically balanced lunches. And I saw big increases in productivity and morale.” As a result, in 2011, Harris and longtime friend Olga Kuzenkov launched DeliverLean. In addition to offering healthy, freshly prepared meals from Kendall to Jupiter, the company has now established a national footprint in the coldpressed organic juice and shelf-stable snack businesses. It recently debuted one of its OnJuice outlets in Aventura Mall. DeliverLean offers six meal plans: traditional, Paleo/low-cal, gluten-free, organic protein, vegetarian and vegan. Each plan offers the option of three, four or five meals per day. Each meal delivers between 300 and 400 calories. Meals are delivered to the homes of subscribers in the middle of the night. “The big differentiator is meals that are cooked fresh and delivered daily. We’re very, very big on transparency about proteins and produce; where your food is coming from. The quality of our product and the variety are the things that really set us apart. We have 28 different menu items every two days. We also make sure everything is properly labeled with calories, and amounts of protein and carbohydrates. We eliminate guesswork when it comes to knowing you’re eating a balanced meal.”

Q:2

What are key factors that have made you successful? “Clearly, the quality of our food is number one. The convenience of our service is also very important. One of the clear benefits we deliver is that we put time back into the lives of busy people. Our slogan is, ‘Your time, your life, your health.’ I also feel that there’s a big shift in the diet and weightloss paradigm, where vanity is a byproduct of ultimately being healthy. People are now very aware and cognizant of what they’re putting in their bodies.”

Q:3

What is most important for prospective customers to understand? “Again, it’s the quality of our food. Most people associate a diet or a healthy meal plan with a punishment. We have executive chefs who use the highest-quality ingredients to create delicious meals that are delivered to your door daily. The food could not be any healthier or be presented any better. We also spend a tremendous amount of time on menu correlation and container appeal, because people eat with their eyes.”

RoseAnn Sbona, founder and owner of The Prana Lab

DEDICATED TO YOGA

VETERAN WESTON INSTRUCTOR ROSEANN SBONA HAS CREATED A SANCTURY OF WELLNESS AND HEALING AT THE PRANA LAB. By John Buchanan More than a decade after earning a reputation as one of Weston’s most acclaimed yoga instructors, RoseAnn Sbona decided it was time to take the next step in her career. “I came to realize there really needed to be a dedicated yoga studio that would raise awareness of yoga and the type of yoga that’s available in the North Broward area,” says the Connecticut-born Sbona. “And one of the reasons for that is there is just so much room for growth in yoga over and above what’s usually available in a gym. For example, there are now more therapeutic components to it and a lot more educational information available about it and why it’s good for you. So I decided to provide all of those things.” Last January, she opened The Prana Lab, a beautiful lakeside sanctuary for yoga, meditation and healing. Prana Lab offers an extensive roster of yoga classes in all major disciplines, as well as holistic nutrition, numerology, children’s programs, sound meditation, workshops, international retreats, and Yoga Alliance teacher certification. The first class is complimentary and information about rates and schedules is available on the studio’s website.

Q:1

What makes you different from other yoga venues? “We offer really high level instruction, which is provided by a team of 14 highly trained and very well-versed teachers. Our team also covers the full range of disciplines in yoga and not just a single type. And every one of our teachers teaches their particular specialty. Nothing is diluted to make every class the same. Everything is authentic and rich and full. We also keep our class size under control so everyone gets proper attention and hands-on assistance.”

Q:2

What healing services do you offer? “We offer Reiki, which helps restore your body’s energy centers to their natural state of flow and improves your overall health. The chakras, or energy centers of the body, are used to help diagnose and heal the complete self physically, mentally and spiritually. Prana healing matches a custom blend of yoga asanas specific to your needs, followed by Thai bodywork. The session closes with a healing Reiki practice, which helps harmonize and promotes healing on all levels. We also offer chakra harmonizing. Energy can become blocked, which can result in physical and psychological disturbances. Chakra harmonizing is a multidimensional process, which uses Reiki, essential oils, crystals and color to create a harmonized sense of well-being.”

Q:3

You also offer instructor certification. Why? “We offer an intensive Yoga Alliance 200-hour Hatha yoga teacher training program. Our most recent program started in early September and runs into June. But it’s not just for people who want to actually become teachers. It’s also for beginning students who really want to build a better foundation from the beginning for their practice of yoga. The course includes instruction on the complete anatomy of yoga, a solid foundation in the history and philosophies of yoga, and the energy systems of the body. It also teaches more than 10 styles of Hatha yoga and how to teach more than 70 asanas, or positions. It also includes an extensive reading list.” The Prana Lab, 16614 Saddle Club Rd., Weston, 954.888.9008; thepranalab.com.

“At Sylvester, we work in teams to provide the best care to our patients. Certainly, your doctor may stand alone as an excellent physician, but he’s even better when he’s surrounded by a critically thinking team continually cross-checking one another.”

Winning the Battle

By treating each case individually and optimally, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is saving lives, one patient at a time. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer Prior to taking on the role of Director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Stephen Nimer served as the Head of the Division of Hematologic Oncology, Chief of the Hematology Service and Vice Chairman for Faculty Development at New York City’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he worked for nearly 20 years. Numerous other appointments and honors have been bestowed upon Dr. Nimer through the years—undoubtedly one of the top physicians in his field—and he’s currently charged with making Sylvester the next great cancer center in the United States. To that end, in the two years he’s been at Sylvester, he’s recruited 48 new faculty members with pedigrees that include Sloan-Kettering, Harvard and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. “I love to surround myself with people that are smarter than me and more accomplished, and I can do that every day here,” he says. “Plus, working here provides us great freedom and flexibility in cancer research and the way it should be done.” And it shows. Not only is Sylvester’s research program leading the way around the world—a number of promising drugs have been discovered on the grounds of the Miami campus—the center’s outcomes for many types of cancer, both early and advanced stages, are far ahead of the national averages.

“Working with kids is great because you get a chance to help them develop good habits and get them comfortable with dental visits.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR DR. SANDRA BRENER HAS QUICKLY EARNED A REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE AREA’S TOP PEDIATRIC DENTISTS. By John Buchanan

Sandra Brener & Associates opened just one year ago in Cooper City, but already, it has built a loyal roster of young dental patients and their parents. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Brener graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1993 and completed her Master’s degree in 1996. In 2002, she made her way to South Florida to seek a better life for her family, and six years later graduated from the Accredited Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Brener is now director of the Nova Southeastern

Q:1

Why do you specialize in pediatric dentistry?

Dr. Sandra Brener

“Working with kids is great because you get a chance to help them develop good habits and get them comfortable with dental visits, something many adults do not experience. What sets us apart from other pediatric dentists is that we offer the most advanced techniques and resources available to treat pediatric patients, with a special emphasis on the development of coping skills and disease management. Through behavior modification, we are also able to turn even the most fearful and apprehensive child into a compliant and happy one.”

University “Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry” course for dental students and the “Primary Preventive Dentistry” course for pediatric dental residents. She has also provided specialized treatments for patients at Nova Southeastern University Dental Clinic, Miami Children’s Hospital, Broward General Medical Center, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. She is a member of American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Education Association.

Q:2

What is your philosophy of doing business? “First and foremost, we created a stress-free environment where kids will be happy to visit. Our philosophy is to always do the least invasive procedure possible. We are very conservative when it comes to managing a child’s behavior, taking the time the child needs to ‘warm up’ and to develop the coping skills needed to get through the dental procedures.”

Q:3

What is the most important thing for families to know about you? “By far, the most important thing for them to know is that we consistently get excellent reviews. One recent Facebook review said, ‘What a great experience for my kids! The office is cozy, clean, modern, and very kid friendly. The staff is courteous and patient. And Dr. Brener is amazing.’ Another Facebook review said, ‘Thank you for your kind and caring ways when treating children. You saw both of my children this week, my 3-year-old for the second time and my 1-yearold for the first time. You will have my children as your patients as long as they need to see a pediatric dentist.’”

Gentle Vinyasa offers a gentler approach to Vinyasa, a combination of graceful, meditative and circular asanas [positions] that synchronize breath and movement. Gentle Kripalu Yoga is great for beginners or those healing from illness or injury. It’s known as being compassionate and spiritually uplifting. Sacred Space Yoga utilizes crystals, aromatherapy and other modalities of healing to bring you to your natural states of good health and joy. We offer a number of other classes as well, each directed toward a particular kind of environment or benefit.”

Shanti 3 Yoga is a serene studio that offers a wide range of yoga classes for all skill levels and promotes meditation and spiritual well being. “Shanti” means peace. When repeated three times, it balances the body, mind and spirit. Opened last February and founded by Venezuela-born Andres Lartitegui, an electrical engineer who began practicing yoga in 2008, the studio features highly experienced instructors. “Making yoga accessible to the community is one of our main goals,” Lartitegui says. “So whether you are an experienced practitioner, a beginner, healing from an injury or looking for a relaxing and meditative experience, we are the studio for you. Our teachers are really what sets us apart. They are very experienced. We have a wonderful staff and that’s what I want to emphasize to people.” An introductory first class is $5; an introductory package of unlimited classes for seven days costs $49.

Q:2

What is hot yoga? “Hot yoga is practiced in a heated, climate-controlled environment and focuses on opening the shoulders, hips and spine, as well as strengthening core and upper body. The main benefit is that the heat means that your muscles are more relaxed and therefore you have more flexibility in your muscles, joints and connective tissues. And that helps you avoid injury. Hot yoga is energizing and fun and appeals to anyone who appreciates a healthy sweat. It encompasses qualities that are both meditative and detoxifying. There are also people who like it because it makes you perspire more and lose weight. And a lot of people just enjoy hot yoga because it’s different. It’s very popular these days.”

Q:3

Shanti 3 is more than just a yoga studio, correct? “Yes. There is a broader purpose to Shanti 3 than just providing yoga classes. It’s not just a place to come and work out. It’s a place where you can meditate and work on your spirituality. That’s actually the main purpose of Shanti 3. There are many, many places where you can go work out and take a yoga class. We look at it from the spiritual side of things. We want people to come and meditate as part of their practice of yoga. It is a peaceful, beautiful, open space that is conducive to reflection and relaxation. And that aspect of the studio makes us different from a gym that has yoga classes.” Shanti 3 Yoga,140 Weston Rd., Weston, 754.800.YOGA (9642); shanti3yoga.com.

Dr. Minna Ruth Selub

Q:1

Why should prospective patients choose your facility?

CREATING PARENTS

FLORIDA INSTITUTE FOR REPRODUCTIVE SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGIES IS A LEADER IN INFERTILITY TREATMENT. By John Buchanan Florida Institute for Reproductive Sciences and Technologies, known as FIRST, is one of the premier infertility treatment clinics in the US, attracting patients from across the country and around the world. Medical Director Dr. Minna Ruth Selub is a graduate of Smith College in Massachusetts and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She then entered a four-year residency training program in ob-gyn at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, after which she completed a three-year fellowship training program in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Duke University Medical Center. At Duke, she performed award-winning research on the mechanism of sperm-egg interaction at the time of fertilization. Before establishing FIRST in 1998, Dr. Selub was Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology, where she served as Director of the Program for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (A.R.T).

“We know that undergoing therapy for infertility can be a very stressful, trying experience, so we aim to provide streamlined care in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Our patients receive the benefits of high technology in a personalized, compassionate setting. Most importantly, unlike many South Florida centers where patients are seen by a different doctor at every visit, or even a paraprofessional, at FIRST, you will be attended by one physician only: me. And I am the medical director. We pride ourselves on the continuity of care we give to each and every patient.”

Q:2

What sets you apart from similar facilities? “FIRST is a fertility center where your case will not ‘fall through the cracks’ and you won’t feel like a number. We are locally owned and not part of one of the big national companies that runs similar facilities in the area, but we offer the same expertise and credentials. We know that with persistence, and, at times, creativity and flexibility, almost every infertility problem can be overcome. We never give false, or negligently omit, information about your individual chances of success. Patients thank us over and over for being candid and offering realistic expectations. We also present the most affordable route to making their dreams of parenthood come true.”

Q:3

What are the most important things to know about FIRST? “Whether your treatment involves intrauterine insemination, ovulation induction with oral or injectable medication, or in-vitro fertilization, you will be given specific instructions for your individualized treatment plan. You will always also be given written instructions, as well. And in order to achieve success, it’s important to study them closely. We realize, however, that there are times you may find yourself confused or unsure about your treatment or uncertain about how to take a particular medication. Our office will give you information about how to get in touch with us 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for critical situations. We continually check email, as well, so that is a good way to contact us for after hours attention that is not urgent.” Florida Institute for Reproductive Sciences and Technologies, 2300 N. Commerce Pkwy., Ste. 313, Weston, 954.217.3456; firstivf.net.

Dr. Maria Yazji

Q:1

What sets you apart from other orthodontists?

PERFECT SMILE DR. MARIA YAZJI HAS EARNED A STELLAR REPUTATION AS AN ORTHODONTIST WHO SPECIALIZES IN AESTHETICS. By John Buchanan Dr. Maria Yazji is one of Weston’s top orthodontists. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she came to South Florida as a teenager when her parents, both dentists, relocated to Miami, where she later attended the University of Miami. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS) from Northwestern University, graduating in the top 5 percent of her class. She then completed an additional two years of orthodontics specialty training and earned a Master of Science in Orthodontics degree (MS) from Northwestern. During her residency, she learned the special skills required to manage tooth movement and guide facial development. She is trained in the latest techniques and the most modern treatment philosophies that emphasize the preservation of all teeth. She is known for being patient-friendly, family-oriented and progressive. “And that’s because I come from a legacy of dentistry,” she says. Dr. Maria Yazji, 2751 Executive Park Dr., Ste. 101,Weston, 954.217.3737; orthodonticsinmiami.com. 74

inWeston Magazine

“One thing is my focus on aesthetic orthodontics. I specialize in Invisalign and lingual braces. The Invisalign teeth-straightening system is a revolutionary and sophisticated system that utilizes invisible plastic retainers, which are designed to slowly realign teeth into the perfect smile. Invisalign Teen is comfortable, affordable and effective. I am an Invisalign Super Elite Premier Provider, which places me in the top 1 percent of dentists in North America. I also specialize in lingual braces, which are hidden behind teeth so they are not visible from the front. While those techniques are important to aesthetic orthodontics, it’s really my experience that is most important. The techniques are only as good as your experience.”

Q:2

What other specialties do you practice? “Early treatment for kids. It’s so important for them to see a dentist at an early age; ideally, starting at age 7, so they can have the best long-term treatment and results. For example, jaw [or skeletal] problems can be easily identified. It is estimated that 80 percent of our facial growth is complete by 8 years of age. An early exam allows me to determine how and when a child’s particular jaw and/or dental problems should be corrected for optimal results. Other significant dental problems are also best treated at an early age, when various types of dentofacial orthopedics can be used to alter or reshape the jaws and supporting bone to a more normal jaw relationship.”

Q:3

What else should prospective patients know about you? “In order to be able to give patients the best possible aesthetic results, I also offer patients fillers and Botox in order to be able to further enhance their smiles. I offer all FDA-approved fillers, such as Juvederm. The goal is to restore lost volume to the face and lips by using fillers. And we minimize wrinkles with Botox to showcase the smile, like a good frame around a picture. My office also provides services such as teeth whitening, gum lifting, and tooth reshaping. When it comes to obtaining a great smile, every detail counts. And the big goal is always a perfect smile.”

MARIE RAMOS

A Simple Plan

Marie Ramos, along with thousands of other consultants, find success on their own terms as part of the Rodan + Fields family. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer “I joined the Rodan + Fields team about two years ago,” says Marie Ramos. “But being a pilot and an extreme researcher, it took me about six to seven months to really get going. I wanted to learn everything I could about the business and our products, and the more I read, the more impressed I became.” These impressive products exploding in popularity—especially across social media platforms, where many consultants share their knowledge, success stories and before and after images—were created by Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, two Stanford-trained dermatologists who also happen to be the brains behind another über-successful skincare product: Proactiv. So what’s the secret to their success? Ramos acknowledges the power of the company’s branded Multi-Med Therapy, which offers “the right ingredients and the right formulations in the right order. Our customers get prescription strength results without having a prescription because the doctors saturate the products with the highest levels of powerful ingredients legally allowed without a prescription. Plus, the line is very straightforward. There’s not an overwhelming amount of products, which not only helps our customers become accustomed to their new skincare routine, but also creates a simple and transparent business plan for consultants.”

Professional-grade tools like the REDEFINE MACRO Exfoliator (left) and the AMP MD Micro-Exfoliating Roller (right) work in conjunction with R + F’s products to create fast-acting and noticeable results. 76

A pilot for American Airlines by trade, Marie Ramos knew she needed something to devote her energy to during her days off. “Prior to joining the team of independent skincare consultants at Rodan + Fields, I was involved in real estate, but it wasn’t a great match with my schedule,” she explains. “One of the best things about working for this company is that it’s so flexible. I can work off my iPad and iPhone wherever I happen to be flying that day.” Ramos does more than simply sell the products. She also focuses on teambuilding and training others. “I enjoy that aspect of the business tremendously. I’ve hired a marketing strategist coach that is incredibly talented. She helps us build a supportive community with weekly motivational calls. I love sharing my knowledge and helping others find success, and that’s a big part of this business.” Marie Ramos, Rodan + Fields Executive Consultant, 954.599.8158, marieramos.myrandf.biz

Drs. Nathan Schramm and Julie Abraham of Natural Eyes of Weston

Q:1

What differentiates you from other eye doctors?

HEALTHY EYES

NATURAL EYES OF WESTON IS MORE THAN AN OPTOMETRY CLINIC. IT HELPS PATIENTS MASTER NUTRITION. By John Buchanan Natural Eyes of Weston, founded in 2012 by the husband-and-wife team of Dr. Nathan Schramm and Dr. Julie Abraham, is a modern optometry practice with a nutritional focus and a spa-like atmosphere. In addition to their traditional expertise as Board-certified optometric physicians, Drs. Schramm and Abraham also discuss with patients the kinds of dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments that can help prevent or slow down eye diseases such as dry eye, macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. Born in New Jersey, Dr. Schramm moved to South Florida with his family when he was 12. Dr. Abraham relocated to Texas from her hometown of Oklahoma City and lived there before coming to South Florida in 2005 to attend Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry, where she met her future husband.

“One thing is the way we treat our patients,” says Dr. Schramm. “We hire our staff as if we’re hiring for Disney World. Everybody is super friendly. I think that makes a huge difference for patients in South Florida, where customer service is often not a real priority. It’s part of our mission statement that we’re a modern optometry practice with a nutritional focus, but also that we want to be recognized in Weston as a real leader in customer service. We also do very thorough eye exams in what is essentially a spa-like environment, with a lot of unique, customized eyewear. For example, we have some made of bamboo. We also sell many leading designer brands like Gucci, Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss.”

Q:2

You specialize in scleral lenses. What are those? “Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas-permeable contact lenses specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the ‘white’ of the eye, known as the sclera,” says Dr. Abraham. “By doing that, they functionally replace an irregular cornea caused by diseases such as keratoconus, which means the cornea actually starts to grow outward like a mountain. We call them a miracle, because we’ve had patients go from best corrected vision of 20/200, which is considered being legally blind, to being able to drive a car again, which is a wonderful thing for people with severe conditions like keratoconus. And scleral lenses can really improve life for patients like that, so I love to help patients discover them.”

Q:3

What is nutritional eye care? “Among other things, it means supporting eye care with specific antioxidants taken in precise ratios,” says Dr. Schramm. “And one aspect of that is that the eye is not just the window to the soul. It’s the window to the body, and all sorts of things can show up in your eyes, anything from high blood pressure to diabetes and heart problems. So one of the things we focus on nutritionally is that if you help the eye, often you help the whole body. We do DNA testing here and can make a supplement based on an individual’s own genetic profile. We also do DNA testing for macular degeneration to better manage that. The same is true of glaucoma.” Natural Eyes of Weston, 2863 Executive Park Dr., Ste. 103, Weston, 954.217.2992; naturaleyesofweston.com.

Dr. Yedda Gomes-Ruane

Q:1

What services do you offer? “We offer a complete range of services, including restorative and cosmetic dentistry, bonding, repair of traumatic injuries, sealants and interceptive preventive orthodontia. Another important service is the age-1 dental visit, during which we check the baby teeth for early cavities, show parents how to care for a young child’s mouth properly and discuss the importance of good oral hygiene. We also provide sedation dentistry and emergency dental services 24/7.”

CHILD CARE OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, DR. YEDDA GOMES-RUANE HAS BUILT A STELLAR REPUTATION AS A PEDIATRIC DENTIST. By John Buchanan For nearly 20 years, Dr. Yedda Gomes-Ruane has operated one of the most respected pediatric dental clinics in Weston. Born in Brazil, she came to the US in 1978 and attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where she received her DMD degree. She then earned a pediatric specialty dental degree from Temple University Dental School and Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Her education included extensive training in the treatment of special needs patients. She relocated to South Florida in 1993 and opened Dentistry for Children in 1995. She moved to her current location in 2003. Dr. Ruane offers a comprehensive range of dental care services, from infancy through adolescence, to help children maintain optimal oral health and wellness. She holds a faculty position in the postdoctoral pediatric dentistry program at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine. She also holds a medical staff position at Miami Children’s Hospital. Dentistry for Children at Weston, 1608 Town Center Blvd., Ste. B, Weston, 954.384.4560; dentistryforchildrenatweston.com. 80

Q:2

What are some other important pediatric treatments? “Topical fluoride makes teeth more resistant to decay. Dental sealants are a plastic coating can be applied at the dental office to prevent cavities by sealing the little grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth known as ‘pits and fissures.’ We also perform root canal treatments on the primary teeth that can help save an injured or severely decayed tooth, and bonding, which can repair chips and fractures in teeth.”

Q:3

You also specialize in special needs dentistry. What is that? “Children with special needs can be divided into two groups. The first group includes children with dental problems such as congenital anomalies of the oral structures, severe skeletal malocclusion, cleft lip or palate or both, and the many syndromes that include defects of the oral cavity. Dental treatment for these children requires an organized and well-trained dental and medical rehabilitation team. The second group includes those children with specific pediatric problems such as bleeding disorders, heart disease, cerebral palsy, autism, and other neurological conditions. In those cases, we also specialize in behavioral modification and management.”

hen LeBron James cramped up from dehydration during the oppressively hot first game of the 2014 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, it was Shane Battier who helped his teammate hobble to the bench. “When LeBron went down, I was his brother,” says Battier, who stands 6’8” and weighs 215 lbs. “I wanted to help. It’s what I do.” About the same time, when Battier, 36, announced he was retiring from the Miami Heat after a remarkable 13-year career in the NBA, he made “Heaties” posters for his teammates. These framed photo illustrations of the players was his way of sharing their great years together. He wanted the guys to have something to admire forever. “I love the guys on the Miami Heat; they will always be my friends,” said Battier during a recent interview at the Soho Beach House in Miami Beach. “I have spent more time with them than with my own family. The guys are funny as hell and they have always competed at the highest level. We have brought the community together. Never before was Miami a basketball hotbed. Now it is. And this is awesome.” Although Battier is launching a new career as a college basketball color analyst for ESPN, he will continue to live in Miami and commute to the sports network’s headquarters and other cities for his on-air work. Battier and his family love South Florida, and the newly minted commentator hopes to do some Heat basketball talk with Jason Jackson of TV’s Sun Sports after the upcoming games. Battier will travel for ESPN from Thanksgiving through college basketball’s annual March Madness, which ends around April 1. “Being on the Heat was

84

Three—James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. At first, Battier thought he was joining a carnival of craziness. “I worried I was getting into a chaotic, idiotic circus,” he says with a laugh, referring to the intense media hype. “But I was pleasantly surprised by the guys in the locker room. I felt we would do something good together.” His instincts were right on. Although it took him a few months to hit his stride, Battier’s unselfish and inspired performances as a defender and a three-point shooter produced something valuable for the Heat during the three years he played. He started in 16 of 23 playoff games the first season and soared in the 2013 winning game seven against the Spurs when he hit six three-pointers. Those games also put him on the map as an important player with a solid reputation for fundamental teamwork. In short, when Battier is on the court, his teammates play better. “Shane was critical to the Heat winning a championship,” said basketball writer Ethan Skolnick after the 2012 NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. ”It wasn’t just his three-point touch. It was his intelligence, his ability to keep accepting assignments and make it work, even when he was at a physical disadvantage.” Coming to the Miami Heat and winning the 2012 finals meant everything to Battier. “Winning the NBA Championship was my lifelong dream,” he says of that first year. “We played a lot of emotional and intense basketball games to get there.” The 2013 repeat was also exhilarating, but then came 2014. Battier wasn’t used often enough during the season’s playoffs, and he didn’t like it. “I wasn’t content not to play as much,” he admits. “Coach Spoelstra had challenges because the Heat was filled with so many talented guys. It’s the survival of the fittest and it doesn’t always go the way you would like. I was ready to retire even before the season started and wanted to go on my own terms. Now that it’s all done, I believe that I picked the right time.”

“I was ready to retire even before the season started and wanted to go on my own terms. Now that it’s all done, I believe that I picked the right time.”

rewarding for me and winning championships [in 2012 and 2013] was a great run,” he says. “But ESPN will present a new challenge. I’ll explain basketball in a way that hasn’t been done before.” And Battier knows the ups and downs of college basketball. Out of dozens of choices for college basketball scholarships after a rich high school career in Michigan, he picked Duke University with its excellent basketball program and coaching staff. “Duke was a fantastic period of my life,” says Battier. “It was rigorous and competitive, but I loved it.” He did well at Duke, playing for four years and helping lead the North Carolina team to the 2001 NCAA Championship while sweeping the major National Player of the Year awards, from the Final Four Most Outstanding Player to NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Defensive Player of the Year. He became the “winningest” college basketball player of all time. “I had a great college career, but there was no magic formula,” he explains. “It was hard work. Plain and simple.” Hard work and being a team player are hallmarks of Battier’s college and NBA careers. He signed with the Heat as a free agent on December 10, 2011. After playing with the Memphis Grizzlies twice (2001-2006 and 2011) as well as the Houston Rockets (2006-2011) in an NBA career that began in 2001’s first round draft, Battier didn’t know what to expect when he joined Miami Heat’s high-profile Big

Pensive and serious, Battier is also known as the resident NBA intellectual. Sporting News named him the seventh-smartest athlete in all of professional sports. While playing, he analyzed his opponents’ moves by studying advanced statistics and creating scouting reports on their recent movements. Over the years, he has succeeded on the court by interpreting that data and using what happened in the past to predict the future. But hard physical work and mental challenges are part of growing up with the singular ambition of being the best at whatever sport he played. Battier is a worker and has always been a hard driver. “I use my mind, of course, but my body is my thing...and I have always taken good care of it,” he says. “I treat it with respect.” Over the years, he has prepped himself well by adhering to a strict health and fitness schedule to stay in top shape. He has done basketball-specific workouts and remains injury-free. He plans to maintain much of this regimen now that he has retired because he intends to stay active. He’ll also continue to eat healthy—lots of fruits and vegetables with constant cutbacks on red meat, opting more for fish and chicken than those juicy porterhouse steaks. And sweets will be enjoyed in moderation. “I eat well, yet healthy, and have watched food intake all of my life,” says Battier, who won’t worry if his weight goes up to a more manageable 225 pounds. “When I trained, I ate sensibly—whole grains, no fatty or sugary foods. It’s become a way of life for me.” His new exercise regimen begins when he awakens by 7 am to help Heidi, his wife of 11 years, get their kids Zeke, 6, and Eloise, 3, to school. Then it’s off to the gym for yoga, Pilates and weights. “I don’t like to run, because my mind wanders and I quickly lose interest,” he says. “ But I do like high-intensity exercise like sprinting, where my mind churns and my heart rate rises.” Battier also swims as an efficient freestyler, golfs, and chases the kids around the yard. Going forward, he’ll engage other types of activities that will rest his joints and back from rigorous years on the court. When he trained in season, Battier went to the American Airlines 86

inWeston Magazine

Arena gym for one hour of weight training with lifts three times a week. His power lifts incorporate core, which increased his endurance; his basketball routines comprised 90 minutes of intense oncourt work. But working hard on the court was fun for him. Born and raised in Birmingham near Detroit, Battier started playing basketball in the second grade. By the sixth grade he was over six feet tall, extremely coordinated, and a skilled shot-blocker for a kid. “I liked blocking people’s shots early on,” he recalls, adding, “even if my friends cried.” Off the court, Battier has been married to his high school sweetheart, Heidi, whom he first met in the seventh grade and chased for two years until she fell for him, since the summer of 2003. Even though they have moved several times for his NBA career, the couple get along well because they are best friends and accept each other’s failures along with successes. “Heidi was a high school teacher,” he says. “She has a good sense of humor, a great perspective on life, and we both like to give back to our community.” Together, they run the Battier Take Charge Foundation dedicated to providing resources for the development and education of underserved youth and teens. The couple started in Memphis, Houston and Detroit before bringing the charity to Miami, where they look for hard-working kids and help them over the hump. They are now hoping to engage younger people in the day-to-day work of the foundation. Each winter, they host South Beach Battioke, an American Idol style competition that raises money for the Take Charge scholarships. (Stay tuned for the 2015 date.) “I like to mentor, give back and help give people chances in life,” he says of the upcoming fundraiser. “This event is our main focus. I want to leave a footprint on the Miami community.” Battier is also involved with Men’s Fellowship, a group of guys who drink beer and talk about what it means to be a modern man and mentor in the community. “We make people think,” he says. While he insists he’s a creature of habit, Battier thrives on trying new things. Sure, he’ll miss the NBA competition, camaraderie and locker room chat. But he will have new teammates and new challenges with ESPN. “Basketball has given me so much,” he reflects. “I’ve learned teamwork and skills that help me every day of my life. With ESPN, I’m looking forward to growing the game of basketball so it’s even more exciting. I can’t wait to use my brain.”

Like the full-time moms who need to be fit, busy career women on the go, and other male and female clients who lead more normal yet active lives. “A regular person has just as many stresses as a high-profile client,” says Beck, 37, owner of Weston-based BB3 Personal Training Professionals affiliated with the Bonaventure Resort & Spa’s aLaya Spa. “I’m impressed with people when I see how they have improved. I love to watch the transformation. There is no better feeling than to help someone else.” Bonaventure’s aLaya Spa Fitness Center became a BB3 training center in April of this year. Spa clients can combine soothing organic face and body treatments with sophisticated, individualized fitness training, nutritional counseling, and motivational workshops designed by Beck and his team of 14. confused by too much information, so we customize a program to fit their habits that works for them physically. Then they need a nutrition plan they can live with. It has to be simple and OK, whether they are home or traveling. And third, they need coaching and accountability. We give workshops to help people change their behavior.

Q: What is the importance of the digestive system in fitness and overall health?

A: It is very important. The digestive system needs to be in

good shape because it affects a person’s mood and attitude. And it can cause depression and other problems if it’s not functioning properly. This is why we work so hard on an effective nutrition program.

Q: Most everyone loves to indulge in spa

treatments, but do they really positively affect our overall health?

A: The spa treatment is exceptional for recovery and

recovery exercise, especially massage. What we do is pure adrenaline; then we relax afterwards in the aLaya Spa, enjoying varied treatments using the best ingredients from around the world. Putting all of this together in a total program makes us feel better and raises our levels as human beings. People fly here from all over the world to work with our program because their lives have improved [from it]. october 2014

yoga high Natalie DeRosa, studio director of Blue Sol Yoga in Weston, began her journey more than 10 years ago practicing inconsistently until 2008. She originally hoped to become a physician’s assistant, but once she fell in love with yoga she never looked back. “I love the holistic approach of yoga, so I gave up studying to be a nurse and physician’s assistant and did yoga training religiously,” says DeRosa, now 28. “My change of heart came with my love for helping people in a more spiritual, holistic way.” At Blue Sol, DeRosa taught the very first class when the studio opened in 2010. She now teaches vinyasa yoga (breathsynchronized movement that is deeper than posture) and hot yoga (performed under hot and humid conditions) classes, which last from 60 to 75 minutes. Yoga has changed her life, and she enjoys sharing her love for the discipline with others.

Q: What does yoga do for a person practicing it?

A: Yoga reduces stress, keeps the body

healthy and the mind calm or less active. We do postures to focus on the mind. And we meditate. Afterwards, people get yoga highs because they are so relaxed, they forget their shoes and car keys. They are almost in a trance!

Q: Do they feel pain after class

from some of the movements?

A: Some muscles can feel sore or tender

about two days later. But I suggest people either do yoga every other day, three times a week, or at least once a week. They also need to restretch. We have followers who say yoga has saved them. It has saved me several times and truly is awesome.

Q: Why do people begin yoga when they have never before tackled it and at what age?

A: I have people who range in age from 14

to 67. Younger ones come to learn how to focus in school. And for girls, it helps them deal with body changes. Older people like to relax their muscles, keep the body open and blood pressure levels good. Some people want to change themselves and their lives. They come to help cope with divorces, a death in the family, or for other life-altering reasons. They break down and cry in class. Once a person lets it all go, yoga becomes a release. Yoga heals the mind, body and soul.

The Grandest slam When career tennis professional Laurent Leclerc says tennis is a sport for a lifetime, he isn’t kidding. As Director of Tennis Operations at the nationally respected Midtown Tennis Club in Weston, he teaches 3-year-olds and 93-year-olds to play the game. Such a wide range of interest in the sport tells it all. “Tennis offers people the most benefits—cardio, joint flexibility, quick mind training, etc.,” says Leclerc, a former tennis champ and coach who left his native Montreal, Canada for the US in 1989. “It’s also a family sport and game where everyone can have fun.” Leclerc, who has held a variety of positions teaching tennis and managing facilities around the US, believes the full-service Midtown offers the best of everything. Tennis players of all levels can also enjoy the swimming pools, fitness studio, spa and other services. There’s also a tennis school offered twice a year so more people can learn to play the game.

Q: How does a person begin to play tennis without feeling intimidated?

A: We approach a beginner with a smaller racquet and bigger

ball to get a good feel and execute good movement. We have a tennis program with six hours of lessons to get the beginner going. It takes a while to learn to play with others. Players will eventually interact with rally drills for six weeks. And then there is follow-up and graduation. Tennis offers great socialization as people move into the competition stage.

Q: Can you elaborate on the health benefits of playing tennis?

A: Statistics show that people who participate in tennis for three

hours a week at a moderately vigorous intensity can cut their risk of death in half from any cause. Tennis players also scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem while faring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes. And competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, inline skating or cycling, according to other studies.

Q: Why do you personally love tennis enough to devote your entire life to the sport?

A: Tennis is a passion for me, especially since I know I can

continue playing at an advanced age. It requires alertness and tactical thinking and is both a social and fitness sport. We all have fun playing tennis, and we want our members and guests to feel the same way. We hope to see them leave the club with a big smile on their faces. october 2014

TWERKING BACK TO YOUTH There’s a new sexy cardio dance craze in town called The Vixen Workout, and Caro Diez, 21, a lifelong dancer and former member of the Miami Dolphins cheerleading squad, wiggles at the helm. This dynamo has been teaching The Vixen Workout for a year at AMP Fitness in Pembroke Pines and is amazed at how fast the class has grown. “This has become a craze,” says Diez. “People see how their friends’ lives have changed and that makes them want to do it, too.” The Vixen Workout gives busy women who are juggling busy lives a chance to let loose in a club-like atmosphere without the fear of being judged. It was started in 2012 by Janet Jones of Miami, a classically trained ballerina and former Miami Heat dancer. She taught Diez a few tricks, and an instructor was born. Diez says that women are attracted to the dance-workout class because it is sort of naughty, emulates Beyonce’s sexy moves and allows participants to go wild and forget their responsibilities for a while. Each class begins with a breakdown of the signature workout, including the Kitten and Hunger poses, Milkshake, P-poppin, Twerkalator, Thigh Shakes and Salt Shakers. The women are encouraged to “oooh” and “ahhh” while stretching in sync to bring out their inner vixens and escape the daily grind of being students, moms, wives, or working professionals. In short, The Vixen Workout gives women 60 minutes to sing, dance and feel sexy while sweating it all off for only $15 a session.

Q: what motivates women of all ages to

participate in your Vixen Workout classes?

A: They come in at night—Mondays and Thursdays at 8:30

p.m.—leave their husbands or boyfriends with the kids, and unleash themselves! They are leading a double life. It’s so much fun, and it boosts confidence. It is not like working out. We love to mix hip-hop and rap music because it makes them feel good. The mirrors are foggy, the lights are on…they wear unofficial leggings, sneaker wedges to tone the muscles, sexy lipstick and eyelashes.

Q: What is the mantra? A: Be what you want for an hour! Be Beyonce while dancing and sweating to club-level loud music. We especially like artists like Rick Ross, Usher, Beyonce and Britney. It is so much fun, and very one-of-a-kind.

Q: What are the results of this hot dance-it-off workout?

A: The women can each lose 60-80 pounds in less than a year if they are active and eat correctly at the same time. Teaching this class is so rewarding to me. After each session, I look at their faces and see that they don’t want to go home. I know what we teach is working.

Breaking

Through Thanks to ongoing research and advancing technology, medical

breakthroughs are happening all the time. Here are 5 recent ones you’ll want to know about.

Gene Therapy Gene therapy, in which a person’s genes are re-engineered to fight diseases and put back into his or her body, is still considered experimental, but it’s been effective recently in treating patients with leukemia and other blood cancers. First introduced to the public consciousness in 1972, the idea was presented with caution; the first FDA-approved gene therapy in this country took place in 1990, and by January of this year, approximately 2,000 clinical trials had either been conducted or approved using various techniques for gene therapy. While there have been several failures, there has also been reason to hope: patients have been treated successfully for a number of conditions and diseases including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, multiple myeloma and Parkinson’s disease. And some of the latest good news came this year, when it was discovered that the procedure actually reversed breast cancer development in mice, raising hope that one day it could become a new way to treat early stages of the disease in humans without resorting to surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.

From the gut Another area of research showing a lot of promise has to do with our guts, specifically all the bacteria residing there. Among the more recent findings: that there may be a direct physiological connection between the mix of microbes in our digestive tract and how our brain functions, and that that mix can also be a factor in whether a person is thin or obese. WebMD reported just last month that research done by an international team of scientists showed that people who put on the most weight lack certain bacterial species or have them at extremely low levels. Hence, says Dusko Ehrlich, a co-author of the study and coordinator of the International Human Microbiome Standards project, “This opens ways to develop bacterial therapies to fight weight gain.” The report also states that a study released in March by the journal Science Translational Medicine suggested that gastric bypass surgery leads to weight loss in mice because it changes the makeup of the bacteria in their intestines. Another study involved monitoring gut bacteria as 49 overweight and obese people tried to lose weight with diets that were low-fat and low-calorie, but high in protein and fiber-rich foods. The diet appeared to actually change the bacterial makeup in the guts of the participants. In response, Jeffrey Cirillo, a professor at Texas A&M Health Science Center’s department of microbial pathogenesis and immunology, said that these findings suggested management of one’s diet could potentially improve the richness of the flora within our guts and decrease our chances of becoming obese.

ADVANCES ON ALZHEIMER’S A blood test has been developed to predict if someone will develop Alzheimer’s within a year, raising hopes that the disease could become preventable. After a decade of research, scientists at Oxford University and King’s College London are confident they have found 10 proteins that show the disease is imminent. Clinical trials will start on people who have not yet developed Alzheimer’s to find out which drugs halt its onset. The blood test, which could be available in as little as two years, was described as a “major step forward” by health secretary Jeremy Hunt and by charities that said it could revolutionize research into a cure. “Although we are making drugs, they are all failing. But if we could treat people earlier it may be that the drugs are effective,” Simon Lovestone, professor of translational neuroscience at Oxford, told the Telegraph UK. “Alzheimer’s begins to affect the brain many years before patients are diagnosed with the disease. If we could treat the disease in that phase we would in effect have a preventative strategy.” Meanwhile, just this month here in the US, Alzheimer’s disease experts at NYU Langone Medical Center reported success in harnessing a mouse’s immune system to attack and remove the buildup of toxic proteins in the brain that are markers of the disease. In a report in the online journal Acta Neuropathologica Communications, senior study investigator and neurologist Thomas Wisniewski, MD, a professor at NYU Langone, said, “Our study results show that precisely boosting the immune system in mice can work effectively against Alzheimer’s disease, a treatment model that could very well be applied in humans.” 98

STEM CELL THERAPY CNN has reported that, in what’s being called a breakthrough in regenerative medicine, researchers have found a way to make stem cells by purposely putting mature cells under stress. Two new studies published in the journal Nature describe a method of taking mature cells from mice and turning them into embryonic-like stem cells, which can be coaxed into becoming any other kind of cell possible. Both studies represent a new step in the thriving science of stem cell research, which seeks to develop therapies to repair bodily damage and cure disease by being able to insert cells that can grow into whatever tissues or organs are needed. Bringing an organ that’s functioning at 10 percent of what’s normal up to just 25 percent can already vastly reduce the likelihood of fatality in that disease. Before this technique, the leading candidates for creating stem cells artificially were those derived from embryos and stem cells from adult cells that require the insertion of DNA to become reprogrammable. Stem cells are created the natural way every time an egg that is fertilized begins to divide and

have the ability to turn into any cell in the body. Removing stem cells from an embryo destroys it, which is why this type of research is controversial. But researchers have developed a method of producing embryonic-like stem cells by taking a skin cell from a patient, for example, and adding a few bits of foreign DNA to reprogram the skin cell to become like an embryo and produce pluripotent cells, too. These cells are usually used for research because researchers do not want to give patients cells with extra DNA. The new method does not involve the destruction of embryos or inserting new genetic material into cells and also avoids the problem of rejection: The body may reject stem cells that came from other people, but this method uses an individual’s own mature cells. In fact, a recent episode of Breakthrough Medicine on University of Miami Health System’s website shows experts from the university’s Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI) using a heart attack victim’s own stem cells in an effort to repair his damaged heart muscles. Watch the video at uhealthsystem.com/ breakthrough/stem-celltherapy.

THE WAR ON CANCER

And in what Science magazine has called the breakthrough of the year, numerous experts believe that the treatment known as cancer immunotherapy is the latest and greatest innovation that’s been made in years. Cancer immunotherapy is the practice of using drugs that spur the body’s immune system to battle tumor cells directly. One of the reasons tumor cells are so resistant is because they are able to wrap themselves in a protective shield; these drugs, which have already begun to be tested, enable the immune system to penetrate that shield and therefore allow the body to fight the cancer cells on its own. While the number of cases where immunotherapy has been tested is still relatively small, the results have been encouraging. And, as Jennifer Couzin-Frankel wrote in Science, “Immunotherapy marks an entirely different way of treating cancer—by targeting the immune system, not the tumor itself.”

“Fish, for sure. I love halibut and, for something local, whole grouper. Getting a whole fish, breaking it down, and having the creative freedom to come up with unique dishes is really exciting.”

Favorite guilty pleasure food?

“Definitely cheese. If I’m going to indulge, it’s got to be worth it, so I’ll spend the money on a nice Taleggio or ash-aged truffle cheese.”

Executive Chef Evan Eisen is pleasing palates at an under-the-radar Fort Lauderdale gastropub.

Q:5

Favorite way to spend your day off?

“What’s that? When I get a chance, I’ll definitely be at the beach or reading. Sometimes I have to force myself to put down those cookbooks and pick up something different. When I get the chance, I love Tom Robbins. Jitterbug Perfume is a favorite of mine.”

By Jennifer Leslie Kramer A California transplant by way of New York City, Chef Evan Eisen of Fort Lauderdale’s d.b.a./café had no idea what his future held when he started washing dishes at a restaurant in Honolulu. “I was out there with some buddies of mine just living the life: snorkeling, fishing, diving, surfing,” he recalls. “But once I moved back to San Francisco, I realized I wanted to be a chef and got serious about it.” Since then, he has worked his way through Napa Valley, New York City, and some of the best restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, including Market 17 and Wild Sea Oyster Bar & Grille at the historic Riverside Hotel.

Although Eisen has only been at d.b.a. a few months, he is already putting his stamp on the offerings. Having worked in fine dining restaurants, he’s got the culinary chops to execute elegant, technically precise dishes like Vichyssoise with smoked salmon, caviar and fleur de sel, which is requested on the regular. “I’m looking forward to doing more dishes like that at an upcoming Summer in Napa wine dinner we’ve been planning,” he divulges. “And in the meantime, I’m thrilled to be a in a place where I have the luxury to experiment daily for a crowd that truly appreciates it.”

chow From Creative Kitchen, the brass behind Hollywood’s Whiskey Tango: All American Bar + Grill, comes another exciting concept: CHOW Sushi + BBQ + Bar, where the dishes take Asian-American fusion to the next level. Think crispy fried chicken brushed with a sticky soy garlic sauce; a mammoth Bahn Mi burger topped with cucumbers, jalapeño, cilantro, pickled carrot and radish, and Saigon sauce; and American Fried Rice, with jalapeño, bacon and barbecue sauce. Then there’s the sushi. Along with plenty of options for purists, there are also unique— cooked—choices filed under the “Not So Sushi” section of the menu, where you’ll find standouts like the Hawaiian roll, with slow-cooked pork, charred pineapple, cilantro, avocado, spicy mayo and house barbecue sauce, and the Philly Cheese Steak Roll, a combination of thin-sliced beef, onions, peppers, and—wait for it—Cheez Whiz. (Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.) You’ll need a proper beverage to wash down all that goodness, and our pick is the Pineapple Bang cocktail, served in a stand-alone resealable baggie, apparently the way drinks are served from Asian street carts, with a straw just wide enough to slurp up the boba lingering in the bottom of the bag.
