After a three-year hiatus, The Botaniko Weston Town Center Food & Wine Festival (formerly The Weston Food & Wine Festival) is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever before. “The event was around for many years up until 2012,” says Angie Paulson. “After a three-year break, the WTC is proud to relaunch the event in 2016. Every year the event has gotten better, and [for this one] they anticipate a high-energy, new and improved version of the event, as for the first time it will not only be held but hosted by the Weston Town Center.” Paulson says this year they’re expecting 700 participants, and in addition to food and wine tastings attendees will get to enjoy live music, a fashion show and a children’s area. “The event was created for the sole purpose of integrating the community together in a fun environment,” says Paulson. All proceeds will benefit the HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday) charity. The event takes place from 1 pm-6 pm on Sunday, January 31 at the Weston Town Center. Art Basel Miami inspires creativity not just at fairs and in galleries, but everywhere across South Florida, especially the Wynwood Arts District.
W
ynwood Walls, the epicenter of the Wynwood Arts District launched in 2009 by the late, legendary Tony Goldman as a “Museum of the Streets,” draws hundreds of thousands of visitors year round. But it’s early December every year that Wynwood’s star shines brightest for artists, collectors, and celebrities, who converge on Miami during Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami Beach. Curated by Goldman Properties’ CEO Jessica Goldman Srebnick since 2012, this year’s program, “Walls of Change”, will include 14 new largescale murals and installations by globally acclaimed street artists as well as a program of events within the art park that will be free and open to the public. Goldman Properties will also debut The Wynwood Walls Garden this year, a new art space adjacent to the Wynwood Doors, which the company recently purchased to

augment its artistic imprint in the neighborhood. Walls of Change will showcase the work of a varied mix of outstanding artists—some household names in the street art world, others up and coming—include Casing (Germany), Crash (USA), Cryptik (USA), el Seed (France), Ernest Zacharevic (Singapore), Fafi (France), Hueman (USA), INTI (Chile), The London Police (UK), Logan Hicks (USA) and Ryan McGinness (USA). Spanish artist duo Pichi & Avo will create their mural on stacked shipping containers in the newly minted Wynwood Walls Garden, while Magnus Sodamin (USA) will paint the floors and walls of the new gallery/events space along with Alexis Diaz (Puerto Rico) creating a one-ofa-kind sculpture. he Broward Center for the Performing Arts, never content to rest on its illustrious laurels, is ending 2015 in sensational fashion—and then celebrating its 25th anniversary with a magnificent event in February. In between are hot-ticket concerts and Broadway shows. The holiday season kicks off December 4-5 with performances of It’s a Wonderful Life, followed on December 5-6 by another beloved seasonal classic, A Christmas Carol. December 11-12, Miami City Ballet will perform George Balanchine’s immortal production of The Nutcracker. On December 18, the acclaimed male string quartet Well Strung will perform A Well Strung Christmas. From December 15-27,

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas comes to town as part of the Broadway in Fort Lauderdale Series. On December 23, An Irish Christmas will be performed, and on December 28, The Ten Tenors: Home for the Holidays will end the calendar of seasonal events. January will bring performances by legendary folk singer John Sebastian on January 9, Paul Anka on January 13, Kristen Chenoweth on January 14, Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage on January 19, and Broadway mega-hit The Book of Mormon from January 26 through February 7. In February, the Zuckerman Trio and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra will perform. Then, on February 26, Broward Center will host an elaborate and much-anticipated 25th anniversary celebration gala with an evening that begins with a cocktail reception at 5 p.m. in the complex’s courtyard, followed by a dinner in the Amaturo Theater and a performance by superstar vocalist Josh Groban—a perennial South Florida favorite. A post-concert party will be hosted on the outdoor pavilion. Individual and corporate sponsorship opportunities are available. “There are many ways to get involved through sponsorships and the purchase of gala tickets,” says vice president of external affairs Jan Goodheart. All proceeds will benefit education enrichment programs at the complex. verybody has a secret passion. The question, of course, is whether they pursue it and transform it into a genuine avocation. Carlos Oropeza did just that after five years of employment in other South Florida flower shops. In August, in partnership with his uncle and aunt, Luis Delgado and Bibiana Perez, Oropeza debuted BB of Flowers—the “BB” stands for “beautiful business.” Oropeza provides the floral expertise and aesthetic vision, while Delgado handles business administration, and Perez manages marketing and advertising. Where he started: My first “real” job was as a mortgage underwriter at a bank. I worked there for two years, until my boss called me in to tell me they were closing their doors and that I would get a severance package. With no college degree but a good understanding of the mortgage industry, I decided to start Mortgage Approval Group and Florida New Construction Realty in 1999. For eight years, I built a business that employed over 100 people with three offices in Tampa and two offices in Fort Lauderdale. In 2007, when the real estate market crashed, I was hit hard. Just one year later, I was bankrupt.
His a-ha moment: My a-ha moment was when I was at a Digital Marketing Seminar listening to the world’s top internet marketing experts. I was blown away by what they were saying about Search Engine Marketing. How was the transition? Tough the first year because I was not a techie, so I spent a lot of time just “learning” this industry. I was fortunate to have kept my real estate broker license active and during that first year I did rentals on the side as I built my new business. What’s the best aspect of having made the change? Lifestyle. When I was in the real estate industry, I had to work long hours and rarely took vacations. Now I have two daughters (and number three on the way) and I’m able to spend a lot of time with my family.

Where she started: In 1996 I started Sobol Fashion Productions, a full-service fashion show and special event production company. Within a few months, I was hired to produce a two-day fashion event in Guayaquil, Ecuador, for live television. The organizers of that event had 21 of the biggest designers from 12 Latin American countries participating in the shows. They all wanted to come to Miami. Two years, I launched the first Miami Fashion Week and brought them all here. Her a-ha moment: From 1999 to 2010, I ran Miami Fashion Week alone…from my house! In 2010, I was joined by my first business partner, Aaron Perry, who worked on the strategic development and global expansion of the company. In 2013, he brought in a group of European investors to help continue this growth; the 2014 event was live-streamed to an audience of over 600,000 people. In 2015, the new partners asked Aaron and me to buy the entire event, with plans to turn it into a television production. Her advice to those with a fear of change: The “unknown” is the most exciting challenge! This is where you really get to be creative, industrious and become the “mad scientist” in your chosen industry to develop new ideas and plans for growth. That has been my philosophy since high school and I have never looked back or regretted a single day in my life or the choices I have made both personally and professionally.

When we sold the bank, one of our new businesses became BBX Sweet Holdings, and we entered into the candy industry with the acquisition of Hoffman’s Chocolates in January 2013. What’s the best aspect of having made the change? Unquestionably, it’s getting to eat and try chocolates and other confections from all over the world! While Hoffman’s Chocolates is an established Palm Beach company and brand, we have really enjoyed expanding its reach into Broward County. We are thrilled to open our fourth Broward store at the Weston Town Center later this year and look forward to celebrating the sweet life with the community of Weston.

Where he started: I worked in the accounts payables department for two companies in the span of 10 years. The job was something to do, but didn’t give me any type of purpose or fulfill a passion. It was a sense of job security and at the time thought it was what I needed to be “successful” in life. His a-ha moment: I was pretty miserable and was on anti-depressant medication. I knew there had to be something better. I realized that if I could put effort into a job I hated, why not direct that energy toward something I was passionate about. How was the transition? It was tough. Not only did I quit my job to start my business; I also moved from my hometown of Dallas and came to South Florida. I had the experience of training people for about three years before I made the leap, but that still didn’t prepare me for truly doing everything on my own. On a small budget, I had to learn to do everything from marketing and branding myself, keeping my own books, and networking within the community. What’s the best aspect of having made the change? I love the freedom and flexibility that self-employment brings. Also I really enjoy what I do now. I get to teach people how to be healthy. I’ve also become a big nerd when it comes to learning about the human body. All the different conditions I come across makes my job interesting. It’s actually lead me to want to focus on Yoga Therapy as well, which I am taking a course in starting in January. His advice to those with a fear of change: I always say find something you enjoy doing, because there will be days you want to give up. On those days, you have to dig deep and remember why you chose the route. Also, remember that fear will only keep you from realizing your full potential. If you are always scared, you’ll never step forward. It’s not easy to step out on your own, I applaud anyone who’s found their own path. It really is the greatest journey I’ve taken.

Her a-ha moment: I turned on the TV and saw the coming attractions for Debbie Ford’s movie The Shadow Effect. Immediately, I knew it was a message for me to watch it. After seeing the movie, I knew right away that I had to meet Debbie Ford. I grabbed my computer and registered for the upcoming Shadow Process two months later. In the meantime, knowing something inside of me had shifted, I applied to a well-known university to complete my degree in social work. I was surprised to learn that I had received a full scholarship to my school of choice. My life has shifted in so many ways. I have a thriving coaching practice. I am also certified in another module called Heal Your Heart, in which I learned how past relationships are re-created until they are healed. Now, I travel the country with The Ford Institute as an assistant for the participants at The Shadow Process weekend. I am a mentor for a small group of students that are going through the certification to become an integrative coach. My dream of helping people has truly come true. What’s the best aspect of having made the change? The biggest change that I have made is definitely the trust I have instilled in myself. I’m able to set and maintain boundaries because I honor myself and love the woman I have become. I am open to new possibilities that I would not have experienced had I continued giving up on myself. I have made amazing connections along my path. As a result, my heart is so much more loving and compassionate.

The transition was not only a career change but also a relocation to South Florida. We would visit Arvida’s Weston as snowbirds every January and February from 1989 to 1995; we both decided that would be our future new hometown to raise our two children, who were 4 and 7 at the time. It was in New Jersey that we decided that we would become a great team together joining forces in residential real estate (Rose was selling real estate in New Jersey since the late ‘80s), with our interpersonal skills and great work ethic. How has it affected other areas of your life? It’s the best of both worlds being able to work alongside your partner in life and build such an amazing career in real estate. I have always been a goal setter and that I have been fortunate to reach the highest level of achievement in both careers says everything. The most challenging of having made the change? Going from 100 employees to no employees (just me in the beginning). That was tough, because I enjoyed motivating my team and after starting Paton Marketing, I found that I was giving myself pep talks. What piece of advice would you give someone who has spent years cultivating a career but wanting to make a change, only he or she fears the unknown? Don’t make your decision based on money. If you’re doing something you love, the money will come.

Mission accomplished! Her a-ha moment: During my last three years at CBS4 I created a company doing online marketing videos for companies. I was offered so many other opportunities, like shooting commercials or doing media training for companies, but it was a conflict of interest with my job. I was negotiating another contract with CBS4 when my dear friend Dana Rhoden, who owns a phenomenal PR and event agency, called and said she wanted me to come on board. I would be able to work with her and run my own company. The stars had aligned, and I made my departure from TV news. How was the transition? It’s amazing! After I anchored my last show just there weeks ago, I walked in the house and my husband had hung up a banner that said, “Welcome Home.” For the first time in our marriage I was going to have a normal schedule and better balance. Her advice to those with a fear of change: Fear is natural and it’s a good thing, but change is also good. Put your toe in the water of that next career you want to try. Feel it out on your own time and really see what kind of work is out there for you and if you would enjoy it. Then, when the timing is right, jump—and don’t look back!

Scream He’s a
T
he talented Diego Boneta, now appearing in the hit Fox-TV horror satire Scream Queens, got his start at age 8 in Acapulco when he asked a DJ for the microphone and began belting out tunes. “It was a ‘wow’ moment at the beach with my friends and lots of models around me,” remembers Boneta, now 25 and living in Los Angeles. “My parents looked at me and were amazed!” From there, Boneta, who was born in Mexico City to a Mexican father and American mother, began taking singing lessons. He loved them, excelling, and began his performing career at age 12 when he participated in Codigo Fama, a children’s reality series in Mexico. After finishing in the top five on the show, he landed his first television role starring as Ricardo in Alegrijes y Rebujos, which had a cool musical group attached to the series. His involvement with the group earned him a nomination for the Best Children’s Group at the Latin Grammys in 2004; he was nominated for his second Latin Grammy in 2005 for the soundtrack of the Mexican soap Mision S.O.S. Boneta took his own path to Hollywood by starting out in a Spanishlanguage TV series, then working his way to the American market with recurring roles on Beverly Hills 90210, Pretty Little Liars and the made-forTV movie Mean Girls 2. His breakthrough role, however, was in 2012’s feature film Rock of Ages, made in Miami. He played opposite Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julianne Hough, Malin Akerman and Paul Giamatti, earning Cinemacon’s Rising Star of the Year Award

and an Alma Award for best actor. “I absolutely love 1980s music.” Boneta grew up listening to The Police, U2 and other groups his parents liked, “so Rock of Ages was perfect,” he says. “Those early influences are still a big part of my life.” Boneta got the part in Rock of Ages and, more recently, in Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens because of a tape he made for Murphy’s Glee while trying out for the Fox TV show. “I tested for Glee but didn’t make it,” he says. “But that tape got me Rock of Ages.” And more recently, he got the role of Pete Martinez, the editor of the school paper in Scream Queens. The show sounded unique and different to him, a dark comedy that was kind of twisted—so he jumped on it. “This was a great opportunity, and I have had a blast shooting it,” says Boneta. Today he’s got many projects on his plate. Summer Camp, a horror movie by Lionsgate, is coming out soon; a couple of action flicks in which he’ll act alongside big-name co-stars are on the horizon, and he has already launched two albums. A third album, The Hurt, for which he wrote the tracks, was just released Oct. 30. “I am real excited about this album,” says Boneta, who recently signed with Sony Music Latin. “It will have six singles—one released per month, with a music video in each. Four songs are in English and two are in Spanish. I love singing!” With his crossover talents and dual passions for making music and movies, Boneta’s career is set to totally rock.

OUNG COUPLES GROWING THEIR FAMILIES, AND OLDER, EMPTY NESTERS whose children have gone off to college and careers, are fueling the booming Broward County residential market. Whether buyers are seeking larger homes to accommodate their kids, or downsizing because couples or single parents now need to live on their own, lifestyle changes directly affect the real estate market. Trends in this area are specific and especially relevant in the luxury corridor, where developers are building beachfront towers with less density and bigger units offering stellar amenities. For example, if a family decision-maker decides to sell the large suburban house in western Broward County because the children are grown and living elsewhere, and the parents have no use for such a large space, they are looking for something new because they have the means to do it. “Their motivation to downsize is not financial and not necessarily defined by age,” says Bradley Deckelbaum, principal of Premier Developers, the company creating Riva, a contemporary waterfront condo in Fort Lauderdale across from the Galleria and close to the beach and Las Olas Blvd. “Rather, it’s about wanting a lifestyle upgrade. These buyers want to come east and live on the water and be close to downtown restaurants and cultural activities.” They also want the most modern new design, with large rooms, bright and open floor plans, and large terraces for outdoor living. They don’t want to spend their time and money commuting and taking care of a large home. (Been there, done that.) Rather than the goal of downsizing just for a smaller space, it’s more about discovering a new quality of life. And usually, this involves living on the water. “There are many luxury products being built on the ocean now,” says Mark Behar, real estate investor, broker, bodyguard and private concierge to the rich and famous. “Beachfront properties are in highest demand in Broward County, with prices going above the listing—especially units with

deeded boat slips.” These new Fort Lauderdale condo projects are addressing the needs of empty nesters who have the money to spend on the good life. Peggy Fucci, CEO of OneWorld Properties and exclusive broker for Paramount Fort Lauderdale Beach, a development-in-progress, has seen an influx of West Broward buyers who are trading the suburbs for a beachfront lifestyle. They’re seeking a carefree existence where they have the flexibility to do more now that they have become empty-nesters. “They stress the walkability of a high-rise tower like Paramount and its location, where they have access to the beach and to the area’s dining options and entertainment scene,” says Fucci. Ocean Land Investments, a developer revitalizing waterfront properties in East Fort Lauderdale with luxury boutique condos in the Las Olas Isles and along the Intracoastal Waterway, is also seeing a great deal of interest from empty-nesters. Aqua Vita, a 22-residence building sold out within eight months of launching sales, according to its developers. Numerous buyers moved from expansive estates in South Florida, including five from Weston. The company has three other projects, AquaLuna, AquaMar and AquaBlu, with residences ranging from 2,136-5,717 square feet and selling from $1.4 million to more than $3.75 million. Amenities at these buildings include boat slips, heated saltwater swimming pools and state-of-the-art fitness centers. The individual units have 10-foot ceilings, gourmet kitchens and large terraces.
“Our Aqua-branded condominiums have attracted empty-nesters who want to eliminate the upkeep of their large homes without sacrificing space or amenities,” says Jean Francois Roy, president of Ocean Land Investments, whose buildings are mostly smoke-free. “Baby Boomers want to continue enjoying an active lifestyle, going out on their boats or to the beach, entertaining family and friends, and indulging everything else Fort Lauderdale has to offer.” Another haven for empty nesters is Auberge Beach Residences & Spa in Fort Lauderdale. This luxury project is being constructed on the 4.6acre site of the former Ireland’s Inn Beach Resort, an iconic hotel where many locals and visitors loved to stay and play. The Related Group and Fortune International Group of Miami have partnered with Fairwinds Group, the third generation owners of Ireland’s Inn. Together, the developers are creating an unusual, luxury-on-the-sand residential property. Overseeing every aspect of living will be Auberge Resorts Collection, the Mill Valley, CA-based luxury hotel operator known for creating intimate and understated elegant destinations on the U.S. West Coast. This development will offer private swimming pools highlighting select terraces overlooking the ocean. Kitchens are being designed with Italian cabinets, stone countertops, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, and an integrated espresso/cappuccino maker. Master bathrooms will feature deep soaking tubs. All residences have 9’ 6” ceiling heights and floor-to-ceiling windows with ocean, Intracoastal and city views. inWESTON MAGAZINE

Auberge has become the go-to luxury destination for those who desire the comfort and perks of resort living in a beachfront setting, and still have ample space and a vibrant atmosphere for when the family comes to visit.” This approach is proving to be very much within specific demands of the Broward County market. Still, the other side of this market is also buzzing with activity and impacting sales. The upsizing segment is attracting domestic buyers as well as those from outside the U.S., like South America, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela. These buyers are looking for a safe and sophisticated haven where they can live and raise their families, which continue to grow. In addition to having their own children, other family members, for a variety of reasons, often move in. Foreign buyers, who like to pay cash, have propelled the South Florida real estate market for several years. But they are being joined by domestic buyers who want to live more lavishly in larger spaces. “People are actually asking for space over location,” says Patricia Lake, who works with luxury homes at Karma Realty in Fort Lauderdale. “With three or four kids, they want to be relaxed and comfortable. These buyers are moving west because nothing east is big enough, and prices are crazy.” Small houses don’t work for these kinds of buyers. They want a movie theater in the home so they don’t have to go out to the public complexes and expose their children to danger that could be lurking in the aisles. They want to host big house parties, and they want the space to do it with style. “I showed one man a big house that he liked but when he discovered there was no home movie theater he said no,” says Lake. She believes Weston is a hot market in Broward County. Buyers like the family feeling of the commu-

nity and the abundance of fine schools and restaurants. They want to live in a sun-filled town where they can use the swimming pool and tennis courts on a regular basis. “These buyers also want enough space to be able to build a basketball court at their own house,” says Lake, who also sees people that request lakefront views. “Younger couples want big homes for their growing families. They want to celebrate New Year’s with everyone of all ages in their family at their own homes.” To find a comparable-sized house with a movie theater and other high-end truffles on the east side of Broward County, a buyer eager to upsize would likely pay the same price for a three-bedroom house as for a larger home in the western areas. “A buyer looking for a new and modern five-bedroom home in Miami-Dade or other areas on the water are looking at $10-$20 million for the same size/quality as they could get in Weston for a five- to seven-bedroom mansion,” says Olga Pyrinvova, in-house sales executive at Botaniko Weston. “Out here, they get bigger and better values for their money.” That’s because cities like Weston hold their property values, even in a down economy. “As a real estate investment, it makes a lot of sense to target a new city like Weston,” says Pyrinvova. “But I am not seeing a lot of pure investors in Weston. It’s mostly big families with two or more kids and the in-laws. They are buying for themselves.” They want an active and fulfilling family life with enough space to make everyone comfortable.

BARÚ—which already has two locations in Miami-Dade, where it’s been open for five years now and has several more in the pipeline—is famous for its epic happy hours, laid-back ambiance, multicultural cuisine, music, art, and of course, signature cocktails. hen it comes to a popular travel destination like Fort Lauderdale—one saturated with countless raved-about hotels and resorts, a dazzling downtown and a sparkling shoreline —there’s something to be said for a restaurant that makes a name for itself all on its own. Located inside the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, the seaside 3030 Ocean, open nightly from 6 pm, has become one of Broward County’s most adored buried treasures. And now, after an extensive two-month renovation, it’s back stronger than ever, with a new look, a new menu and the newly appointed, award-winning Adrienne Grenier at the helm. Returning to the place where her career first began, executive chef Grenier, who earned her stripes as 2012 champion of Food Network’s Chopped, adds a little something special to the 3030 Ocean experience. Known for her inventive twist on farm-to-table cuisine, the young prodigy has created a menu of indulgent delights just in time for fall, using none other than South Florida’s best, locally sourced catches

and produce. And complementing her new menu is the 216-seat restaurant’s more intimate, sophisticated redesign. Inspired by the waters of the deep blue Atlantic right outside its window, this locale, which now includes an expanded bar and lounge area and purposely relaxed vibes, is adorned in organic, ocean-inspired textures, colors and accoutrements, all meant to put you in a vacation state of mind from the moment you walk in. Backed by such an enchanting setting and talented team, the only trouble foodies will have at 3030 Ocean is deciding what not to order. While you try to narrow down your favorites (trust us, there will be many), indulge in a Peter Pumpkin Eater Martini—a tantalizing combination of American Honey Bourbon, pumpkin purée and cream—or hit the raw bar. As a 3030 mainstay, it’s home to a smorgasbord of East and West Coast oysters, Gulf shrimp, snapper crudo with fennel, crushed olives, lemon, chile and mint; Florida
clams with bacon, baby potato, fresh herbs and créme fraîche; spiny lobster ceviche with coconut, lime, papaya and chile; and more. And as any local knows, just because we live in sunny South Florida doesn’t mean we don’t relish the warm flavors of fall. Reopening in the heart of the season, 3030 Ocean has whipped up a bevy of hearty dishes
steeped in autumnal comfort, like farm-fresh raw Swank Farms squash with hazelnut-mint pesto, lemonette and queso fresco; or roasted pumpkin soup with toasted seeds and crème fraiche. For the meat lovers among us, the pulled-pork pasta with hand-cut noodles, smoked tomatoes, aged goat cheese and house ricotta won’t disappoint, while the Grenier fan favorite, sautéed Florida flounder with cauliflower purée, almonds, golden raisins, capers and brown butter, keeps loyal diners coming back for more. Of course, no dinner is complete without the perfect sweet ending, and because she understands the magic of food, Chef Grenier has come up with decadent desserts that just might do the trick. If it’s light and fresh you’re craving, pick the local tropical fruit tart with crispy vanilla bean meringue, mandarin curd, fresh fruits and guava sorbet. Otherwise, go big or go home with a throwback to your teenage years: the Snickers tart, a layered hodgepodge of dark chocolate ganache, Caramelo, peanuts and salted caramel ice cream. It promises to bring out the kid in you. Whatever you choose, one thing’s for sure: it won’t be anything less than spectacular. How do we know this? o you’ve got your heart set on a new Porsche, but you or your significant other can’t get around the fact that the 911 Carrera and Cayman/Boxster twins are just too small and impractical for your lifestyle. So you compromise on one of Porsche’s more spacious, luxurious offerings, the Panamera sedan or Cayenne SUV. While both have engines in the front, not the back, as with the Carrera, they are among the very sportiest vehicles in their class. Yet they’re rather different in certain key respects. Which one slices the Porsche pie best is up to you. Porsche Panamera (Base price range: $79,095 to $201,495) If you really, really, reeeeally did want that Carrera, the low-slung Panamera may be the one to get, combining as it does the scintillating driving character of Porsche’s legendary sports cars with real space for four adults, lavish accoutrements and usable, easy-access cargo space. Clearly attempting to look like a 911 that’s been stretched into a sedan, the Panamera goes with a sloping hatchback instead of a proper trunk, resulting in a somewhat awkward but distinct profile. This is particularly true in the limo-like, long-wheelbase “Executive” form. The benefit, of course, is good cargo space with folding seats, and,

love it or hate it, the car looks sleek and fast, certainly compared to its stodgier luxury brand competitors. Another way the Panamera differs from it competitors involves its low-slung cabin—so low, in fact, that many of the buttons usually found on the dashboard are arranged in a herringbone design along the tall transmission tunnel. That same tunnel remains relatively high in back, actually bisecting the Panamera’s rear seat into two separate (and pretty special-feeling) thrones. And Porsche being Porsche, the rear chairs are supportive sport bucket seats, just like the ones up front. Executive models boast cross-at-your-knees legroom; indeed, if a limo mated with a Carrera, it’d feel something like this inside. Under the hood is an assortment of available engines ranging from a 310-hp V-6 to a prodigiously powerful 570-hp twin-turbo V-8, with my favorite being the viscerally sport-flavored GTS. And if your partner happens to be a Tesla-phile, a plug-in hybrid model can travel about 20 miles or so on electricity alone before the gas engine enters to help you go the full distance, however far that may be. Regardless of engine, all Panameras tackle curves like a racecar, with pan-flat body control and gloriously talkative steering. And the Turbo/Turbo S models in particular are supercar-quick.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: The Cayenne is tough enough to take you over any terrain, which in Florida means potholes and puddles; the roomier interior better suits families; the Panamera is reminiscent of the sexy sportscar feel that other Porsches, such as the Carrera, are famous for.
Something to note: the Panamera was introduced in 2009 as a 2010 model, and a completely redesigned model is expected to appear by the end of 2016—something to bear in mind (or use as leverage for a possible discount) when the time comes to sign on the dotted line. Porsche Cayenne (Base price range: $59,295 to $158,295) If your partner is set on an SUV, and/or you already have a Carrera and want something different, then you might want something higherprofile—literally—than the Panamera, and the Cayenne fits that bill perfectly. The Cayenne attempts to transcribe Porsche’s time-hewn sports car form vocabulary to SUV proportions, and does so arguably successfully. Being an SUV, it has a more conventional tall-wagon profile and exhibits a few macho conceits in the form of egg-crate grilles up front, black lower body and fender trim, and bevels in places where the Carrera and Panamera stay radiused. That said, it is certainly sleek. The Cayenne’s interior décor closely mimics that of the Panamera, albeit with more upright seats, a lower floor and a far more commanding view of one’s surroundings through the relatively upright windows. With a three-person back seat and large cargo area, the Cayenne is definitely the better family car between the two. And trust us, no kid will be embarrassed being dropped off at school when you pull up in a Porsche. Like the Panamera, the Cayenne is offered with a similar array of

V-6 and V-8 powertrains, ranging from 300 horsepower to 570 hp, as well as the same plug-in hybrid with 15–20 miles of electric range. Higher and heavier than the Panamera, the Cayenne is not quite as sporty from behind the wheel—no surprise there—yet the standard all-wheel drive system tenaciously claws the pavement, and the firm suspension does a stunning job keeping it flat in corners. The Cayenne’s biggest trump card, however, is how it Advantage remains unfazed by deep pools in the Panamera: road, or if the road is replaced altogether by muddy ruts or a peppering • Sportscar performance of rocks. “The primary purpose and mission of UWAC is to provide spiritual and physical food to the most lost and broken of our society; to those people that society often overlooks,” explains Pastor Frank Diaz of United All We Can (UWAC). The organization also assists adults, kids and the homeless living in South Florida with emergency needs, working with a consortium of seven faith-based restoration homes that provide aid to the chronic homeless and to people with habitual addictions who make a minimum of an 18-month commitment to the program and exhibit a genuine desire to get off the streets. UWAC also works with the Department of Children and Family Services through a community program called Share Your Heart, in which they assist in providing essential needs during domestic emergencies. Operating out of a 3,000-square-foot warehouse in Opa Locka, and with small coolers and freezers spread around in separate locations where they can store perishable items, each week UWAC delivers food and clothing to the restoration homes with which they partner. When Bieber called Pastor Diaz wanting to donate the leftover food from her daughter’s party, he came out to Weston at 1 am to pick it up. The next day, less privileged guests at a baptism enjoyed the food. The day after that, still more of it was used to feed needy people in Overtown.

lunch with... make it difficult for people to do that. So when I spoke to you, I was blown away that you actually enable people to give back. Listen, the health department is put in place to help society. But they also put regulations in place saying what society can and can’t do. What is more important, though, than helping others? They don’t want to be legally liable, but do you want to be so health-conscious that you don’t want to help someone? Is it evil to do good? The answer is no. People are eating out of garbage cans. But they say if you give them food that wasn’t packaged right, they might catch something and die. How less healthy can it be to give people than what homeless people are eating out of dumpsters? Surely that’s not a healthier option. I remember one day we were just finished feeding people in Overtown, and we were cleaning up. We always do a sweep so that no one can say we leave a mess. We were picking up some food and using a plate to scrape it up. There were rocks and leaves on the ground that were getting into the food. A prostitute came running up to me and said, “Do you guys have any food? I’m hungry.” And we said, no, we’re sorry, we’re just cleaning up. We can give you a soda and bag of chips. She asked me, “What’s in your hand?” and snatched the plate with the food from the ground and started eating it. She hadn’t eaten in three days. We could hear her crunching on the gravel. But that, to her, was the best food she’d ever eaten. How far did that happen from the Broward County line? It’s in our backyard.It’s nationwide. Not just in Broward or Miami; it’s worldwide. It’s an epidemic. But in the most powerful nation in the world, it shouldn’t be. So many people don’t realize that charity starts at home. You can’t feed other countries first when there’s a child next door that’s going hungry. We want to find solutions, starting in our own backyard. Feeding them that leftover food is only a small part of it; it’s also about helping the soul, teaching people to weather the storm and stand on their own, restore and put people into a system where they can be part of society. That’s part of our business model. We are a nonprofit—we don’t make money; we spend money. And we are a team of three. Imagine what 300 or 3,000 could do, applying it in their own community? The government is tapped out now. If you go to homeless centers, there is a three-month waiting list to see if there is a room available—if there is one. For one person. Are they going to call you? Never. They don’t have the system in place. How can somebody help regardless of religion? It’s a human thing—social responsibility. It’s all about being united, same mind, same heart, same vision. If you have a member in your organization who doesn’t have the same vision, it doesn’t work. And when you put the needs of others before your own needs, that’s when you succeed. No one has ever gone poor by giving. Right? I read that quote a couple years ago and it struck me. It’s a true statement.
