High Note The iconic guitar hotel tower under construction at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood is set to become one of the world’s most recognized landmarks.

Rocker Steven Van Zandt and Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain came out to Hollywood for the “Guitar Smash” event.

In the spirit of the Sydney Opera House, Paris’ Eiffel Tower, the St. Louis Gateway Arch and even the Washington Monument, Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel, as part of a spectacular $1.5 billion expansion project, is putting up a guitar-shaped hotel tower on the property with a Hard Rock casino inside that houses 3,267 slot machines, 178 table games and a redesigned and rebuilt (to the tune of $100 million) Hard Rock Live with 7,000 seats in a theater-style configuration. Designed to resemble

back-to-back guitars, with guitar faces, necks and brightly lit guitar strings that reach 450 feet into the sky on both sides, it will be the flagship destination of the Hard Rock International empire owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The expansion will also include 60,000 square feet of new retail and restaurant space. What else we can expect: 806 additional guestrooms and suites, with 638 in the guitar tower, where all the rooms will be 525 square feet or larger, and an additional 168 guestrooms and suites that

Family Days, funded by a grant from PNC Arts Alive! at the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood, which offers interactive arts activities as an expansion of its current Free Admission Day program offered for contemporary visual arts exhibitions presented on the third Sunday of each month. “We’re excited that PNC’s generosity has allowed us to offer this wonderful program to families,” says Joy Satterlee, executive director of Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. “It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to connect to and benefit from the arts by participating together in hands-on activities that encourage education, communication, cooperation and fun.” Free Arts! Family Days focuses on the four key pillars of arts education: visual arts, dramatic arts, dance/movement and percussion/ music. will be located in a seven-story Pool Tower that will flank the pool complex, bringing the total number of guestrooms and suites at the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood to more than 1,300. At the base of the guitar tower will be an elaborate 10-acre pool complex highlighted by the “Bora Bora Experience,” with private villas surrounded entirely by water and waterfalls, with luxury accommodations that include private plunge pools and butler service. The expansion will open in mid2019, in advance of Super Bowl LIV at nearby Hard Rock Stadium in February 2020. Leaders of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Seminole Gaming, who own and operate the casino complex, recently got together on the expansion site to celebrate its construction progress with a traditional Hard Rock “Guitar Smash” ceremony and community event. “Our ancestors and elders welcomed curious tourists to our Florida reservations, and today’s members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida will soon welcome visitors from all over the world to what will become a landmark destination,” says Seminole Tribe Chairman Marcellus Osceola Jr. “Our guitar tower will attract global attention.” Indeed, it will.

Dr. Julia Harper at work addressing her audience.

Justice FOR Superwoman How to get it? Neuroplasticity expert Dr. Julia Harper shows us the W.A.Y.—which, incidentally, stands for “What About You.”

58

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

We can’t control the universe—even though many of us try very hard, on a daily basis, to do just that—but we can change our behavior. Just ask Dr. Julia Harper, a Davie-based expert in neuroplasticity, or the rewiring of our brain to break old, reactive and negative behaviors, patterns and habits. She doesn’t just talk the talk, though; on the contrary, she recognized that she, too, was in need of a solution to the Perfectionism Syndrome—aka Superwoman Syndrome—that would leave her feeling miserable at the end of any given day whether she had met her to-do goals for that day or not. So she developed a way to “walk myself out of it,” as she says. That’s how the W.A.Y. method was born. Best of all, Dr. Harper can actually help the rest of us learn how to do it, too, and take back our lives— along with our mental well being. To hear Dr. Harper speak in person, check out “Blame It On Your Brain! Change Your Behavior Through Neuroplasticity,” on Wed., January 17, 2018, from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. at The Sacred Space, Miami; visit juliaharperinc.com.

The “Superwoman Syndrome” moniker is one that rings a bell with so many women today who feel the pressure to make everything in their lives work perfectly, not just for themselves but for everyone around them. It can breed resentment and anger, though, because of the unjust burden it creates. What’s it all about? I can only talk to you about Superwoman Syndrome because I’ve got it myself. I discovered it because at the end of my “super” days, I was still miserable. The idea we have is that if we check everything off our list today, this day is going to be better, this day is going to be different. And somehow, you get to the end of that day, and you’ve got some things done or even all of them, but you ask yourself, “Why is it I still feel not-so-super?” I noticed myself not feeling the exhilaration of accomplishment, when I would sit down and realize my to-do list fell somewhat short of perfect. And then we tend to think, well, if I can’t be 100 percent, I’ll go for 98 percent—still aim for the “A.” And then we still come up short.

So how do those of us caught up in that cycle retrain ourselves, or “rewire” our brains, as you put it—especially after operating this way so long? I like to quote Julie Andrews and say, “Begin at the beginning.” Everything starts with the “don’t want”, and every time you are faced with a “don’t want” your brain is wired

to react. “I don’t want to miss a deadline. I don’t want the kids to still be awake at 9:01 p.m.” These show up all day long in your life. You think it is your choice to be angry, nasty or bitchy when you miss that deadline or the kids are still up at 9:01, and you try to talk yourself out of it, but the part of the brain that drives your reaction doesn’t care what you want. You have to realize you do not get to control whether or not it’s coming, but you can control how you’re going to handle it when it does come. The shift for the Superwoman is to move where you put your control. Take all your smarts and put it where you have control, which is in yourself. The W.A.Y. method is all about getting out of the cycle. I know this well because I used the method to see myself and walk myself out of it. It’s practical, and you can use it over and over, using simple steps. I wanted to bring it to real women with real lives, with businesses to run and children to raise. The bottom line is you can’t change what you can’t see.

New Y ear, NEW APPROACH STOP BY THE NEWEST SOUTH FLORIDA LOCATION OF THE BIOSTATION, A ONE-STOP MEDICAL, WELLNESS AND ANTI-AGING PRACTICE.

Looking to begin the New Year with good health, but want to skip the typical doctor’s office experience? the biostation, a full-service medical, anti-aging and wellness practice in Delray Beach, will open its second location in Miami in December. Founded and run by Dr. Martin Bloom, a cardiologist and functional medicine expert, it’s a place where you can stop in for an energizing B12 shot and a shot of Botox—or, on a more serious note, opt for a comprehensive blood panel and let them dig deeper into your health problems. “At the biostation, we’re changing the way traditional medicine is practiced,” says Dr. Bloom, who has designed a total wellness package that provides patients more one-on-one time and more testing than most traditional doctors usually offer. “From the hour-long appointment with our doctors to our in-depth lab testing and full spectrum of services, the biostation offers all one’s wellness needs under one roof.” Each patient also has their own dedicated Patient Advocate, who becomes their guide through the entire process, and best part: they take most insurance. “We look to identify the root cause of any issues to restore the body

E. Matthew “Whiz” Buckley PREVIOUS LIFE: U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornet fighter pilot CURRENT PROFESSION: Founder & CEO Top Gun Options (financial company)

FORT LAUDERDALE

HIS STORY:

The moment my life and career changed was when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North World Trade Center the morning of September 11, 2001. I had left active duty from the Navy in late 2000 to pursue the dream airline pilot career of working one day a month and flying to exotic locations around the world. As I took my brand-new American Airlines uniform out of the plastic, my wife came into the bedroom with a horrified look on her face and told me that I needed to take a look at the TV. The first thing I noticed was that the weather in New York was beautiful and the impact hole in the World Trade Center’s north tower was too large for a small plane. As I stood there in stunned silence, going through my mental aviation checklist of how such a thing could have happened, I saw an airliner streak in from the right side of the screen and explode in a massive ball of fire and debris into the side of the second tower. My heart jumped. I knew we were under attack. I ran into the bedroom, reached past my brand-new American Airlines uniform, and grasped for the familiar feel of my well-worn green Navy flight suit. I zipped it up as fast as I could, pulled on my flight boots, and ran out the door, nearly tripping on laces I hadn’t tied. I broke the land speed record getting out to Naval Air Station Fort Worth, and got through the gate just as they locked it down and went to THREATCON 5—the highest combat posture. I went from flying an airliner that day for the first time to possibly shooting one down. A couple of days after the attacks we were sitting alert and I scrambled and forced down an aircraft that was flying near Presidential airspace around Crawford, TX. When I was hired by American Airlines, I received a nice letter on colored stationery, signed personally by the Chief Pilot. On October 1, 2001,

66

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

I received a photocopied letter from American Airlines HR that started with: “Dear Crewmember”. Since I was one of the newest hires at American Airlines, I was immediately furloughed, along with thousands of other pilots. Furloughed is airline-speak for “laid off”. I lost everything—my job, my healthcare, my retirement. We had just bought our first house—we had lived in military housing for 10 years—and we had used up what little money we saved in the Navy for a down payment. But I still had my family and I needed to provide for them. I was going to take control of my future. I wasn’t going to let myself become complacent again. And never again would I put all my eggs in one basket.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

I directed all of my energy into something that until this point, I never thought of as a full-time career: my stock and options trading. I started trading stocks and options as a young fighter pilot and immediately recognized something interesting. The same discipline and risk management methodologies that allowed me to successfully fly and fight the Hornet over the skies of Iraq could be applied to my trading as well. It worked. Extremely well. Eventually I popped up on the radar of a leading Wall Street equity options volatility arbitrage trading firm. I was brought on as the Managing Director of Strategy. We grew from 99 people and $150M to over $2.5B and 600 people in 3 years. A couple years later I became the founder and CEO of the Options News Network. We provided a behind-the-scenes look at the options market to average retail traders and investors, the “CNBC for Options”. It would be an understatement to say that I felt like Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) in Trading Places. I have a saying: “Trading is combat.” There’s a winner and there’s a loser, and at Top Gun Options I train my members to win.

Social entrepreneur FORT LAUDERDALE

HIS STORY:

My son Andrew has autism. When he aged out of the public school system at 22 years old, I decided to change my career and create a business where he and others like him could find sustainable employment, have purpose and hopefully gain independence. I started Rising Tide Car Wash in 2012. I now have two car washes and employ over 80 persons in the spectrum. It was exhilarating starting over at 51. Creating a social enterprise where 80 percent of the staff was in the spectrum in full view of the consumer with intent of educating the public on the capabilities within the diversity was unknown territory to say the least, but with the help of my eldest son, Thomas, we made it happen in a big way. I have been an entrepreneur for most of my adult life and my mindset here was the same as it has always been: to remain disciplined, well organized, goal-oriented and most of all unafraid to take risks and make mistakes along the way while rising to the challenge of business.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

From a business perspective, the most rewarding aspect of what I am doing now is working with a group of people who are genuinely happy to come to work, who care about the business, take great pride in the product we deliver, and value the relationships they form at the company and our community as a whole. On a personal level, the rewards are endless. Watching people like Andrew go from a quiet, marginalized and unsure young man to empowered, ready to try new things and take on new challenges, is one that I find most fulfilling. It is amazing what employment can do for somebody who was put on the fringe.

PREVIOUS LIFE: Entrepreneur and CEO of too many jobs

trying to find the right fit (11 in one year!) CURRENT PROFESSION: President & CEO, Winterfest, Inc. FORT LAUDERDALE

HER STORY:

While working in a position that was out of my element in 1993 and reaching out every lunch hour and evening looking for the right fit, I was beyond frustrated. I would find myself crying while driving home and I knew in my heart that I was destined to be in marketing and PR, but I so desperately wanted to be involved in the community at the same time. I had been volunteering for Winterfest since 1987 and just loved being involved in this amazing family event. When I came across the perfect job as Director of Advertising at the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, I just knew I had to get an interview. Problem was, the day I came across the position was already the deadline! I left work early and drove to the Chamber ten minutes before it closed and begged the receptionist to let me meet the decision maker. He finally agreed, as there was only one way out and I was in the doorway. That said, he gave me ten minutes and two hours later I walked out as the new Director of Advertising for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce! After a fabulous two years, I heard my calling, and in 1995 I ended up walking across the hall to the Winterfest office to start a new position as Director of Public Relations and within a year I took over as the President and CEO. It was meant to be.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

I was absolutely terrified when I became CEO, as I was only 29 and the Board of Directors had concerns with my experience. In fact, I was so apprehensive about even applying for the position, I actually waited until the night of the deadline to toss my name in the hat. I went through numerous interviews with a variety of board members. I developed a strong level of confidence with each interview as I began to realize that I was already doing much of the responsibilities they were looking for. Right after my final interview and during the other candidate’s interview, I had the chairman’s assistant place a note in front of him saying I knew in my heart that this was my job and to please hire me. Thank goodness he liked my style, as it gave him the boost to hire me. From the moment I got the call, I was off and running and continually striving to make this event the best. With an amazing staff, board and sponsor family that I adore, Winterfest produces the largest one-day live event in Florida and the seventh-largest in the United States, with over 1 million spectators coming from all over the world to watch it from the shoreline. In addition, with millions more watching our parade on television, we are proud to be ranked in the top 20 parades out of the 50,000 recognized parades worldwide…right up there with the Macy’s and the Rose Bowl Parades!

HER STORY:

I was doing well with my team building business—working with some big hotels—when I was asked to volunteer with a local non-profit supporting children of incarcerated parents in 2004. Through a grant award from Health and Human Services, I guided the program mentors and kids through team-building activities to help them find good mentor/mentee match-ups. That experience showed me a whole neighborhood full of kids with no place to play and no adults available to supervise them. Seeing all those kids with nothing to do and no place to go was the “kick in the gut” experience that made me start FLIPANY. I started an open training drop-in program twice a week, and pretty soon I needed to hire more staff. My passion and determination grew each day seeing those kids moving, resolving conflicts, and using team-building skills. The motivation those kids gave me was strong enough to get me through the difficulties (almost two years) of not knowing anything about how to start or manage a nonprofit organization—and those difficulties were especially rough at first. I was such a novice!

THE HAPPY ENDING:

There are so many rewards; helping others is the key. As a collaborative partner, FLIPANY works with other businesses and organizations serving low-income communities. When those businesses are ready to support healthy lifestyles in the neighborhoods they serve, FLIPANY delivers programs customized for those neighborhoods. The most rewarding part of this work is building layers of trust in communities and redefining social circles through health and wellness programs—going in with one kind of program, getting positive results, and responding to requests for more kinds of programming for that same community. We love to see a community go deep in its commitment to health and wellness for all of its residents. With a healthy foundation in place, the community is set to build new perspectives on what it means to live healthy.

CURRENT PROFESSION: Headshot

FORT LAUDERDALE

HIS STORY:

A friend of mine put a camera in my hand at a nightclub I was promoting. I was hooked from day one. Then, after the positive feedback began rolling in from my first set of photos, I immediately knew I was onto something and that I had to make this my future career. Jumping feet-first into a new business by yourself, no matter what it is, can be terrifying. I couldn’t believe I was starting a new career in a field that I didn’t know much about. But I was passionate about photography and people really liked my work. So I knew if I worked hard enough I had all the right elements for success.

THE HAPPY ENDING:

I truly love what I do and being able to make a living from it is awesome. Not only am I able to do well for myself, but more importantly, the headshots I take have helped so many of my clients in their own careers. I love getting that type of feedback and it warms my heart knowing that my work helps others achieve their goals.

may remember the talented Reed Krakoff from his tenure as the creative director of Coach. During the 17 years he spent with the company, Krakoff transformed it into a $4 billion handbag and accessories brand that rapidly became a household word. But even then, Krakoff, who has lived in South Florida and still spends a great deal of time here with family and friends, would proclaim his love for design, furniture, architecture and art. As an influential creative force in the world of design, he became a superstar in fashion, yet always leaned toward product design. “I think what makes life beautiful is when you live with things that are both functional and incredible to look at,” says Krakoff, whose wife, Delphine, is an accomplished interior designer, and whose South Florida-based mother, Sandra, is an internationally known collector of fine furnishings and art. “The concept of American design is that form follows function.” Now, as Chief Artistic Officer of Tiffany & Co. in New York, Krakoff is the first designer in the luxury company’s 180-year history to become an executive. That’s because such creative geniuses need to have a harder hand in running the business these days. And Krakoff understands the nuances of luxury, design and

home fashion like a well traveled tourist who prefers English watering places in winter. Tiffany & Co. has just launched a new luxury home and accessories collection—available at the Aventura Mall store—spearheaded by Krakoff. It was born out of his concept that beautiful pieces should not be limited to special occasions. The collection is Tiffany and Krakoff’s take on modern life, in which creativity and wit merge with fine materials. “I think what makes the collection unique is that is incorporates the best quality, craftsmanship and design with a level of functionality that allows you to use these things every day,” he says. “This is at the heart of American luxury—a sort of effortless, off-handed, understated luxury that is in your life every day as opposed to something precious that you put on a shelf and take out for special occasions.” Gone are the days when your mother and grandmother kept special items hidden away, then produced them for the holidays. Krakoff and Tiffany created a line of beautiful objects for the home that can be used constantly. For example, bold tableware patterns appear throughout the collection. The wheat leaf de-

sign applied to bone china and cut crystal pieces is architectural and brilliant. A diamond cutlet inspires the geometric pattern in the Diamond Point series comprising glass, porcelain, silver objects and small leather goods. A casual tea service set in bone china and on leather accessories features a color-blocking pattern offering a unique twist on the beloved Tiffany Blue. Handcrafted in silver are a protractor, ruler, twisted drinking straw, paint can, yo-yo, first aid box and cup, ordinary objects made extraordinary by the fine craftsmanship displayed by Tiffany artisans. These accessories offer the whimsy that maintain the Tiffany sensibility, a concept that has developed and matured over the years. These ordinary objects come to life with brilliant execution. The company is known for its subtle approach to design, with impeccable taste and a dash of humor. The Tiffany archives are filled with objects that embody this concept: a sterling silver pillbox in the shape of a Chinese takeout food carton, a sterling silver gardening spade, a hip flask shaped like a fish, a sterling silver telephone dialer that a person could keep in her purse or bag and produce to make a call without chipping away at a manicure. “Tiffany

has incorporated wit, intelligence and humor into its advertising and marketing for many years,” says Krakoff. “The idea was to embrace intelligent irreverence and incorporate that quality into the designs themselves as well as the marketing around the collection to embrace storytelling. That sense of wit and charm embodies an approachable, offhanded kind of luxury.” The company was also one of the first to offer tasteful baby gifts. Tiffany continues this tradition by having its talented artisans create exclusive items like a piggy bank and a cashmere and wool blanket in signature Tiffany blue, all destined to become heirlooms for future generations who never want to part with such collectible gems. The imaginative use of found objects to showcase Tiffany jewels was a signature of the famous Gene Moore, Tiffany’s legendary window designer. In his 1978 window installation, a paint can is artfully displayed with a sculptural splash of neon. In this new Krakoffinspired Home & Accessories Collection, this common household item is transformed into a crystal ice bucket with a sterling silver trim. The Loring Tea Set—inspired by the steel tread pattern found in the streets and subways of New York—pays homage to the 1979 tabletop items designed by Tiffany design director emeritus John Loring, who now lives in South Florida and has become a creative force here. This unique tread detail was recreated by hand in the

Tiffany & Co. hollowware workshop. But Krakoff, who collects 20th-century and contemporary design, has his own personal style and talents. He just published an illustrated book with his wife, Houses That We Dreamt Of: The Interiors of Delphine and Reed Krakoff, in which they combine the sophistication of luxury interiors, the innovation of period and contemporary furniture and art, and the glamour of fashion. “A home is beautiful when it incorporates someone’s personal style in a comfortable, livable way; when you can really feel their essence in the space,” says Krakoff, who believes design is about choices, like this proportion instead of that, this lamp instead of that. “The whole idea that luxury doesn’t equal formality is so important.” Also important is the fact that Krakoff fully understands the purity of design. He has spent a career designing fashion and home objects with an unabashed passion. His inspiration for the Home & Accessories Collection does not incorporate a stage or specific aha moment. His process begins while working. He is always thinking, drawing, researching and sketching, trying to come up with a real idea. Nothing should happen because it’s only beautiful, or nice, or functional. It has to be a combination. “It’s all about creating a narrative for each piece,” says Krakoff. “And each piece has an idea, a story that makes it something far greater than simply what it is.”

On your feet! The flavors at Estefan Kitchen could just put you there.

W

hen Miami’s First Couple of music set out to do something special, it invariably succeeds. The golden duo of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, who brought conga and an exotic sound to the far reaches of middle America (and the world) in the 1980s, are devoted to keeping their Cuban culture alive, first with Larios on the Beach, where J-Lo met her first husband, waiter Ojani Noa, then loads of projects including the smash Broadway hit On Your Feet!, and now Estefan Kitchen, their latest culinary venture in the Design District’s lush Palm Court. Stroll through the catwalk of high-end boutiques developer Craig Robins lured into their new Miami homes, take a left at Valentino, past Bvlgari, Vacheron Constantin and the sparkling diamonds shimmering inside Jason of Beverly Hills, and you’ll arrive at Estefan Kitchen and enter into the intoxicating environment that emanates from its outside bar and wide-open entrance. Based on a conceptual design by Emilio Estefan and Aldo Ducci of Arkitekto Co., the black and white interiors, elegant bisazza floors and striking iridescent blue-tile walls are inspired by 1950s Cuba and the vibrant design, culture and warmth that permeated Havana and the island. Men in guayaberas and women in fine dresses arrive with a touch of nostalgia for a bygone era, surrounded by a new generation attracted by unabashed glamour and great food. The air fills with lively conversations as guests perch on white mock-crocodile banquettes that flank the expansive dining room and are punctuated by sparkling mosaic palm trees that command the room’s center.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Lechon Flatbread; the bar at Estefan Kitchen; Lechon Asado.

The Estefan coat of arms lights the back wall. The atmosphere begs one to start with a cocktail, and Estefan Kitchen doesn’t disappoint, with a selection of signature drinks and “worldfamous mojitos,” including the Chusma Fina (“pretty girl” in Cuban slang, or so we’re told), a sparkling number made with rum, mint leaves, lime juice and sugar cane, and topped with Martini & Rossi prosecco. Although potent, there’s no need to settle for just one glass; it’s available in a pitcher (as are all the restaurant’s mojitos) for $65. Come to Estefan Kitchen with an appetite, for as in any good Cuban home, Abuela is ready to feed you ʼtil you burst with her delectable cuisine, only in this case, it’s Chef Odell Torres bringing Cuban favorites to life.

Men in guayaberas and women in fine dresses arrive with a touch of nostalgia for a bygone era, surrounded by a new generation attracted by unabashed glamour and great food. Start with handmade Ham or Chicken Croquetas, made with a creamy béchamel sauce and balsamic guava reduction or Bacon Wrapped Maduros, sweet plantains wrapped in Applewood smoked bacon, queso blanco and Estefan Kitchen Guava Cream. The Mini Cuban Sandwiches are just as you would imagine: bite-sized portions of the classic pressed sandwich made from slow-roasted pork, ham, fontina cheese, pickles and mustard, but with a little extra: tiny Cuban flags on toothpicks stand proudly on each morsel. Small plates include the not-to-be-missed Lechón Crispy Moros with award-winning roasted pork, sweet plantains, grilled onions, cilantro sauce, organic honey and truffle oil. Yes, it is as mind-blowing as it sounds, and makes it harder to progress to main courses, as nearly every dish is as tempting. Favorites include Tuna Tartare with fresh tuna, avocado, fresh-squeezed lime juice, gluten-free soy sauce and sesame oil; Masitas de Puerco, mojo-marinated crispy pork bites, grilled onions, mojo and fufu (mashed green and sweet plantains) and Salmon Tiradito, made with thinly sliced salmon, fresh-squeezed lime and orange juice, red onion, pickled pineapple, jalapeño pepper and chili cream.

114

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

Chef ’s specials, or Tajasos, change weekly, and sometimes more, for Chef Torres infuses more traditional Cuban favorites into the menu, which includes such favorites as Lechon Asado, Chicken Vaca Frita, Paella for two and the famous China Cubana, Cuban-style fried rice with shrimp, steak, chicken, bacon, egg, vegetables, sweet plantains, gluten-free soy sauce and sesame oil (a vegetarian option is available). Talented servers break into song accompanied by a pianist seven nights a week, while weekends (Friday–Saturday) usher in a Buena Vista Social Club-mood with piano, horns and a conga beat. When the band takes a break, some of the best, rarely seen videos from the 1980s (think A-Ha’s “Take on Me,” Earth Wind and Fire’s “September” and Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration,”) keep the happy vibes going. The restaurant continues the afternoon Cafecito tradition with an express café for traditional Cuban “grab & go” items, espresso drinks, fresh juices and healthy shakes available throughout the day. For 2018, however, a second six-figure roadster may be found next to the stately and luxurious SL in the Mercedes showroom: the Mercedes-AMG GT roadster. Low, sleek and extroverted, the new GT Roadster is a purpose-built sports car that captures the spirit of the original 300SL even better than the actual SL. Certainly, each of these Teutonic two-seaters is utterly delightful to drive, but visually, dynamically, and conceptually, they’re extremely different creatures—one for drivers who like to chill, the other for those who like a thrill.

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ SL-CLASS (BASE PRICE RANGE: $89,195—$222,995)

As the beneficiary of over 60 years of continuous improvements, the 2018 SL-Class is an exceedingly evolved automobile, engineered to deliver all the benefits of convertible ownership while eliminating most of the known drawbacks. The Nappa leather on its splendidly comfortable seats, for example, is heat-resistant so as not to fry one’s thighs

after it’s been parked in the sun. For top-down driving on cooler nights, Mercedes’ nifty “Airscarf ” seat vents gently blow heat upon your nape. And of course, instead of a fabric top, the SL-Class utilizes a retractable hard top with a transparent center section, with a trick Magic Sky Control panel optionally available to electronically darken the overhead glass with one button. New for 2017 is the ability to raise or lower the top at speeds up to 25 miles per hour; also, the cargo separator in the trunk is now powered. That said, the SL is graying at the temples. Its design dates back to 2013, and, like an aging starlet, it entered its mid-life years with a new nose and a butt tuck, thus bestowing a more youthful, if somewhat less

distinct, visage upon all SL models from 2017 on. And indisputably luxurious though it may be, the cabin is peppered with buttons and dials that appear to have come from another era altogether. True to its name—or half of it, anyway (SL officially stands for Sport Leicht, or “Sport Light,” in German)—the SL is remarkably lightweight despite the considerable mass of its complex retractable hardtop. It’s not terribly sporty, however, even with the optional active suspension that actually leans into turns like a motorcycle. The SL450’s quiet, smooth, 362-hp V-6 is perfectly sufficient, I think, though the SL550’s 516-hp V-8 is throatier and obviously quicker. Even more go-power comes in with the AMG SL63 with its rowdy 577-hp V-8 or the AMG SL65, with its prodigious 621-hp V-12. Prices start under $90K for the SL450 and top out at an eyewatering $223K for the SL65. For better or worse, those lofty prices, combined with a softening market for high-end coupes and convertibles in general, ought to ensure that new SLs will remain rare.

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

2018 MERCEDES-AMG GT ROADSTER (BASE PRICE RANGE: $125,395—$157,995)

As the market for luxurious grand tourers like the SL dries up, six-figure sports cars are selling just fine, thank you. Until recently, Mercedes watched enviously as its cross-town rival in Stuttgart, Porsche, sold $100K-plus 911s as fast as it could build them, but since 2015, Mercedes has challenged the prolific Porsche with a gorgeous, all-new sports coupe called the Mercedes-AMG GT. Three years later, the longawaited Mercedes-AMG GT roadster has arrived, giving 911 Cabriolet buyers a shapely new alternative with a big personality. In pictures and especially in person, the GT roadster is achingly beautiful. Its extreme, long-nose proportions nod to early 300SLs without copying them, and its toothy “Panamericana” grille treatment looks so good it will appear on nearly all Mercedes-AMG models moving forward. The 469-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that powers the base, $125K GT roadster would be enough to satisfy pretty much anyone on earth if only Porsche didn’t offer the 911 in some 22 different body styles and powertrain combinations. To face off against the faster 911s, then, is the stupefyingly fast, $158K GT C roadster, which bristles with 550 hp underhood while receiving a raft of AMG-developed chassis

upgrades and an exhaust note sent down from the gods. Meanwhile, the GT C ratchets up the visual drama with two additional inches of rear width. As with the SL, the GT Roadster’s seats come standard with Airscarf, but the seats themselves split the difference between conventional sport seats and racing shells, with thin frames, aggressive bolsters and truly beautiful craftsmanship. Mercedes-AMG has packed a lot of design into the roadster’s snug cabin, including huge round air vents in the dashboard and a center console that’s home to an octet of round buttons and dials for quick adjustment of the various AMG performance bits. With its rich mix of materials, it feels no less luxurious, however, than the SL—somewhat of a surprise and an indicator of how masterfully Mercedes-AMG combines performance with panache in its sensational new ragtop. The GT coupes and roadsters may take a while to establish themselves in the sports car world, but in the Mercedes world, they’re already a hit.
