nine
cloud
The word “eména” means “me” in Greek, so if you’re looking for some “me time,” check in to the new eména spa located on the ninth floor of the Hyde Resort & Residences in Hallandale Beach. “I like to call it ‘cloud nine,’ because everything heavenly is on the ninth floor, from the spa and the pool deck to the gym,” says Christina Kesaris, CEO of eména. Like its first location in the Design District, this outpost boasts an eco-luxury concept, but is much bigger and comes with outrageous ocean views (unlike many spas that seem to be buried in
the basement). The new spa, which boasts an earthy vibe with copper tones, features five luxe treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite and a body treatment/shower area with those covetable water views. Kesaris says she strived to find the best massage therapists in town, and one of the standout treatments is the Shirodhara Treatment. This soothing treatment uses a high-tech copper pot that rhythmically pours sesame or coconut oil over the forehead (known as the sixth Chakra) to help quiet the mind, encouraging tranquility and
sound sleep. But since the hair salon directly faces the ocean, some may want to opt for a blow-out or a trim—you won’t find any salon in South Florida with these vistas. And if that’s not enough bliss for you, guests of the spa can hang at the swanky pool deck and order a healthy spa lunch from Hyde Beach Kitchen + Cocktails. My suggestion is to grab an organic tea and chill on the terrace, letting the ocean carry away your troubles. eména spa at Hyde Resort and Residences, 4111 S. REDEFINING FILLERS Love to laugh, but hate your laugh lines? There are two new fillers arriving at doctor’s offices that are sure to redefine the look and feel of fillers. Restylane Refyne is a soft, thin injectable designed to treat nasolabial folds (those that run from nose to mouth), while Defyne, which is thicker and firmer, is meant to plump and fill deep-set lines. So, why are these products different? “They were developed using a cross-linking technology known as XPresHAn Technology, which allows the fillers to move naturally with the face, making the presence of the filler undetectable but still giving noticeable improvement in wrinkles,” explains Dr. Melissa Lazarus, a South Florida dermatologist who is one of the first to offer these two new options. Lazarus does add that in areas that need more lifting instead of plumping, these wouldn’t be the best choice. Prices range from $650-$850. Thunderstorms are a given here in South Florida, especially in the spring and summer months, and for many pet owners that often means an anxious dog who’s hiding under the bed. Two South Florida mechanical engineers, Jonathan Azevedo and Chris Lightcap, recently teamed up to create ZenCrate, a safe retreat for dogs during extreme events like a thunderstorm, fireworks or construction. The high-tech crate and den is based on scientifically proven strategies to reduce stress in animals and is designed to drown out loud noises, play soothing music and lessen the vibrations from thunder or heavy machinery. “Once the pet feels that they are in a stabilized environment without vibrations, their anxiety and stress levels will diminish,” says Azevedo of the crate, which also uses low light for a calming effect. ZenCrate is manufactured in Sunrise and each crate comes with a memory foam mattress. Prices start at $450; www.zendogcrate.com.

GOOD FOR YOU, GOOD FOR THE PLANET I love stumbling across “good for you” products designed by locals, so when I recently met Felisa Prieto at a Broward County art fair, I instantly fell in love with her handmade organic beauty products. Prieto started making her own skin-care line called Felisa Creations after she couldn’t find any products for her ultra-sensitive skin that were free of harmful ingredients. “All I encountered were products with lists of chemicals that I couldn’t pronounce, and my skin got worse,” Prieto says of what led her to seek out natural ingredients like cane sugar, coconut oil, rosehip seed oil and grapeseed oil. “It’s gratifying to rediscover all the good nutrients that nature alone has provided us.” Choose from a Sugar Scrub made of cane sugar and coconut oil that exfoliates while hydrating the skin, a Facial Toner created with lavender and witch hazel to close pores and tighten skin, or the Hair & Body Serum that can be used as a body moisturizer or to condition (and tame) frizzy hair. The designer is always working on new scents and plans to launch lip balms and face masks later this year. Prices range from $10-$15; www.felisacreations.com

Adriana Kostencki AGE: 33
Why she’s in this group of 20: I am an attorney and partner at Berger Singerman law firm, where I lead the business and corporate immigration department of the firm. I am also the President of the Venezuelan American Chamber of Commerce and the President of the Venezuelan American National Bar Association, as well as a current Academy Fellow of The Florida Bar Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy and a member of Class VII of Connect FloridaLeadership Florida.
How she enhances her life outside of work: I use my own experiences to empower people, and have found a passion for helping others succeed. I got involved with the Venezuelan American Chamber of Commerce and became the youngest person to preside over the Chamber in 2014. During my term, we raised awareness of the importance of corporate social responsibility and promoted education and networking activities among our members and the community at large. I was re-elected this year, and our goal is to continue to empower members of any nationality, encourage entrepreneurship and give back to our community through various programs and partnerships with local charities and pro-bono work.
Proudest accomplishment: As a Latin woman and first generation [in my family] to move to the U.S., I am very proud of what I have achieved in less than ten years—from not speaking a word of English to becoming a partner and leading the business immigration practice of a prominent law firm in Florida.
Goal for 2017: I want to continue to be actively engaged with our community, promote social responsibility and serve as an example to younger generations and people who may be going through situations similar to mine when I first arrived in this wonderful country.

Dustin L. Jacobs AGE: 33
Why he’s in this group of 20: I am the Vice President of Marketing at BrightStar Credit Union, which was founded by 26 Broward County Public School teachers back in 1946 and has since grown into one of the largest credit unions in South Florida with over 54,000 members.
How he enhances his life outside of work: I love to travel—so much that my husband and I bought an RV last year. I’m a firm believer in the benefits of experiencing new cultures and different walks of life. It keeps you humble! I’m also a board member for local non-profit Partners in Education, which connects Broward County schools and businesses in an effort to guide and educate our students and future leaders.
Proudest accomplishment: Becoming VP of marketing at BrightStar is an accomplishment I’m very proud of. Last year, we implemented marketing campaigns that helped over 50,000 members obtain new homes and cars, start businesses and obtain a college education. That is a proud accomplishment for sure!
Goals for 2017: Our institution expanded its services last year to serve five new counties in Florida. Looking into 2017, I have elevated our growth goals to reach even more new members so we can make a financial difference in their lives.
The motto he livse by: If plan A doesn’t work, the alphabet has 25 more letters. This really speaks to the power of not surrendering to fear and taking risks in life, whether professionally, emotionally or physically.

Adriana Fazzano Ficano AGE: 31
Why she’s in this group of 20: In my role as Chief of Staff and Associate Vice President for Corporate Relations for Broward College, I provide leader ship and operational oversight of the Office of the President. I also oversee the management of community relations, institutional events, custom corporate training opportunities for companies, and external affairs for the College.
How she enhances her life outside of work: I’m a member of the Ambassador’s Cabinet of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance—the county’s economic development organization; a board member for the Greater Fort Lauder dale Chamber of Commerce, and, a graduate of Leadership Florida, Con nect Florida Class VI.
Proudest accomplishment: Establishing a scholarship for Vene zuelan students at Broward College. My husband, Juan Pablo, is from Venezuela, and shortly after our wedding last year we decided that we needed to do something to help this population of students who are desperately fleeing an oppressive socialist government. Since July 2016, we have hosted two fund rais ers and have supported two students with scholarships. We will be hosting our next event in March.
Goals for 2017: I hope to continue my work as a servant leader in the community. I particularly love my role as an ambassador’s cabinet member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance. In that role, I have the honor of assisting with the Alliance’s Fellowship Program for minority and womenowned business who have established themselves with staying power and are ready to take the next step in the Broward business community.

Why she’s in this group of 20: After almost 20 years in Corporate America, climbing from the cubicle to becoming the President of an almost 3,000-employee company, I found the courage to leave to follow my heart and my dream. I teach Mindfulness and Meditation full-time now. I think I have a unique perspective on how to bring mindfulness into corporate environments and held corporate cultures truly experience a shift.
How she enhances her life outside of work:
It’s very important for me that any mindfulness class or workshop I offer (outside of corporate environments) has a small or no barrier to entry—meaning it’s free. I believe that meditation is not just for the “haves” who can afford to go on expensive retreats and sign up for workshops, but it’s something that is needed by all. Every Sunday morning I teach free meditation on Hollywood Beach to hundreds of people and I also teach mindfulness for free at public schools across the tricounty area and to non-profits.
Proudest accomplishment:
Over the past twelve months, I’ve been able to teach meditation to over 30,000 people in the South Florida area, empowering individuals to become the best version of themselves.
Goal for 2017:
I’m going to continue to partner with the Miami HEAT through our program “HEAT Nation Meditation” to bring meditation to the masses. I’m publishing my book this year. I’m doing a TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) talk in Las Vegas in October. In addition to that, I’m planning a large-scale “Mindful Music Festival” featuring positive message artists such as Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson right here in Broward County.
The motto she lives by:

Heather Gilbert AGE: 38
Why she’s in this group of 20: I have the honor of working with large employers and hospitals throughout the country educating their employees and community members on how to lower their risk for a heart attack and stroke by participating in a simple non-invasive vascular screening, AngioScreen®. Our goal is to detect disease and direct individuals into mainstream medicine before a major event occurs.
How she enhances her life outside of work: We as a family are passionate about doing mitzvahs—good deeds—for those who are less fortunate. We have visited senior communities to cheer up the elderly, collected toys, toiletries and canned goods for those in need, and try each day to bring a little joy to those around us. I currently serve on the executive board as Children and Family Services Vice Chair of the David Posnack Jewish Community Center and as a general board member at Temple Kol Ami-Emanuel. I am committed to my volunteer work at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center. It is truly a special place to learn and grow. For the preschool, my husband, Randall, and I were instrumental in raising the funds and implementing a handicapaccessible, no-mulch colorful playground as well as a state-of-the-art Kids in the Kitchen Culinary Institute. These structures and enhancements teach the kids life skills that are not necessarily taught in the classrooms. I also help to raise funds for preschool and camp scholarships as well as scholarships for kids with special needs.
Proudest accomplishment: Managing to survive without my father. I learned so much from him. My greatest accomplishment is having his legacy live on in the soul and being of my children, Evan and Reese. They love life and are kind, caring, compassionate contributing members to our community.
Goal for 2017: Continue to get more people involved with the mission of enriching lives by connecting people.
The motto she lives by: Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you. Ernest Hemingway said, “Before you act, listen. Before you react, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try.”

James “Ross” Evans AGE: 26
Why he’s in this group of 20: In my role as Pastry Chef at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, I strive to create guest experiences that will not be forgotten. Creating those moments that people keep thinking about is what drives me.
How he enhances his life outside of work: I’m keen on staying happy and positive and make sure to remind myself that being aggravated or angry is a waste of time and energy. I try to exude positive vibes to set the pace and energy for any environment, and for those around me.
Proudest accomplishment: In August of 2016, I took one of my mentees up to Atlanta to compete in Pastry Live’s National Showpiece Championship. After six months of intensive training and coaching, my teammate, Michael Galindo, who at the time knew very little about chocolate, and I took the national stage together to receive a Silver Medal.
Goals for 2017: One of my goals is to focus on mentorship, as well as sharing my gained techniques and culinary knowledge with the South Florida community and throughout the country. This year is not about celebrating my achievements, but influencing the achievements of the others around me. I want to inspire others and create opportunities for success, not by following in my footsteps, but paving a path that includes education, failure and growth.

Why he’s in this group of 20: I’m the founder and CEO of SiliDog silent (no-jingle) and colorful pet tags.
How he enhances his life outside of work: Bringing my dog, Bentley, with me everywhere 24/7 always brightens a crowd. Whenever you see him, you can’t help but smile. We spread Sili-ness!
Proudest accomplishment: Rescuing an abused dog, which led to the idea of SiliDog, and sealing a deal on Shark Tank.
Goal for 2017: Moving out of my parents’ garage.
The motto he lives by: “Enjoy your life, the precious moments you have. To spend each day with some laughter and some thought, to get your emotions going. If you laugh, you think and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.” - Jimmy V.

Why she’s in this group of 20: I’m a professional Mixed Martial Artist fighting for the biggest organization in the world, ranked as high as #4 in the world in the Flyweight division. Growing up I was a four-time Florida State Champion competing in the boys’ division. How she enhances her life outside of work: I try to be a role model for the younger generation, especially the little girls that train around me and aspire to be like me one day.
Proudest accomplishment: Being able to compete in the most competitive organization in the world when doctors told me I would never be able to be an athlete again after a traumatizing motorcycle accident in my early 20s.
Goal for 2017: I plan to be a top contender in my division and hopefully compete for the best in late 2017 or early 2018.

Why he’s in this group of 20: I am the Rabbi of B’nai Aviv, the Conservative Synagogue of Southwest Broward.
How he enhances his life outside of work: The word “rabbi” means “teacher,” and I have learned that to embody that role and be an effective educator, I must be a perpetual student. To enhance my life and those of others, I turn to the tenets of our ancient texts and the corpus of Judaism’s literary tradition for inspiration and guidance. Our Torah was the first behavioral psychology book, and it remains the most useful self-help book out there.
Proudest accomplishment: My family. All of my professional pursuits and successes pale in comparison.
Goals for 2017: My goal is simply to bring each of our 700+ families closer to Torah in an accessible, sophisticated, relevant and impactful way. We recently completed a beautiful renovation of our sanctuary and ballroom, and I look forward to a similarly ambitious project for our Early Childhood Education Center, which has doubled in enrollment this year.

Why he’s in this group of 20: I’m a managing partner in Wild Felice & Partners, PA, law firm; I also serve on the Board of Directors of 2-1-1 Broward, HANDY, ARC Broward, Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale and United Way of Broward County’s Envision United. I also chair the Endowment Committees for ARC Broward, HANDY and 2-1-1 Broward, I chaired the March of Dimes Signature Chef Gala, the 14th Annual Joint Tax and Estate Planning Seminar and the 2-1-1 Broward Making Real Connections Breakfast.
How he enhances his life outside of work:
My two kids are my life, but when I’m not spending time with them or assisting clients, my true passion is the world of charitable organizations. I love networking and I love helping others, so I married the two loves and began serving the non-profit community, specifically those non-profits that serve Broward County.
Proudest accomplishment:
Being a father. The best part of owning my own law firm is that I never have to miss any important moments in their lives. I refuse to work on their birthdays and never schedule appointments before 9:30 am so I can walk them to school.
Goal for 2017:
My goal is always to find that balance between work life and personal life. My clients and colleagues become my friends, which is a wonderful thing but often blurs the line between networking and not-working. I hope to be more present in what I am doing, not worrying about what else needs to get done but rather simply enjoying the people I’m with and the things I’m doing at that very moment.

Why she’s in this group of 20: I’m a full-time student pursuing a Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations degree at Lynn University in Boca Raton. As Miss Florida Teen 2017, my platform is to spread awareness about cystic fibrosis. A dear friend recently passed away from cystic fibrosis and I wanted to help educate others and raise awareness and funds for research.
How she enhances her life outside of school:
I am a big proponent of philanthropic work. I try to take part in about four charity events every week. This past summer I obtained my degree as a hair and makeup artist. I frequently work at different charitable events doing hair and makeup on women to make them feel beautiful inside and out. I am also a member of the sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma, and I hold a chairman position.
Proudest accomplishment:
Winning Miss Florida Teen USA, and now I have the opportunity to represent Florida at the Miss Teen USA competition this summer in Las Vegas, and, God willing, bring the USA crown home to Florida for the first time in history.
Goal for 2017:
I am excited to release my first book, a children’s book to educate and empower those affected by cystic fibrosis.

Why she’s in this group of 20: I’m the President and Founder of Levy Public Relations & Events, a strategic public relations firm that specializes in editorial placements and marketing plans for clients in various industries including lifestyle brands, real estate, design and hospitality.
How she enhances her life outside of work: I spend time with my children and run. I also just got into meditation, which I am excited about.
Proudest accomplishment: My three children and my family are my greatest accomplishment to date. I’m dedicated to making sure that I’m involved with my children’s education and social development. I do my best to balance all of it but, at the end of the day, I do everything for them.
Goal for 2017: This year I’m planning on expanding my company into new markets. We have plans to open an office in New York in late spring. I am also working with others to expand client relations and reach into key markets across different regions. Personally, I would love to take more vacations, especially to places I have not traveled to yet. I’m also really trying to learn more about the seven chakras and meditation. If I can take more time to spend with my kids and get more involved with their after-school activities, I would like to do that too.
The motto she lives by: I have two: “Take the ball and run with it. ” I was taught this early in my career, and I think that I’ve really done it throughout the years. Also: “Be the type of person you want to meet.” I make a point to always be respectful of others and treat them the way I would want to be treated. I do this at home, with my friends, with employees, vendors and clients.

Heather Geronemus AGE: 37
Why she’s in this group of 20: I oversee media and community relations for Ultimate Software. I suspect what puts me in this esteemed group is my leadership in the community. After a lifetime of volunteering for various organizations, I took the tragic loss of my father to a drunk driver in 2009 and turned it into a passion for advocating for safer streets through fundraising and awareness-generating efforts with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). I serve the organization locally, at the state level and last year I was elected to the National Board of Directors of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
How she enhances her life outside of work: I volunteer as much as possible. I live a very fortunate life and I feel that it’s my duty to spend my time helping others. In addition to MADD, I serve on the Pine Crest School Board of Trustees, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Broward Advisory Board and National Volunteer Leadership Council, the Winterfest Board of Directors and the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation Board. I also serve on the committee for the National MS Society South Florida Chapter’s annual gala luncheon. I have volunteered with this organization since I could walk and talk. I firmly believe that giving on any scale is the single-best way to improve the word.
Proudest accomplishment: I founded Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K in 2011 to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving as well as to raise funds to support MADD’s mission in Broward County. In its seventh year, the event will have raised $1 million and is the largest event of its kind in the country.
Goal for 2017: I will continue to connect people, nonprofits and companies to build better, stronger and safer communities.

Why she’s in this group of 20: I’m the Executive Director of the Coordinating Council of Broward, an organization made up of senior executives from the largest health and human service funders and providers in Broward County. In addition, I also serve as the Executive Director of the Nonprofit Executive Alliance of Broward, a collation of nonprofit CEOs.

Goals for 2017: In my work life, I look forward to moving forward with a community solution to address our workforce housing crisis. Lack of affordable housing for the workforce in Broward is an economic development issue that affects everyone.

Danielle Peacock AGE: 38
Why she’s in this group of 20: I established Peacock’s Pantry Boutique Catering in 2012 from a true love of cooking, with no formal training and a commitment to making events an unforgettable experience for my clients. Each year, our growth rate exceeded our expectations, which allowed me to build our unique, chic kitchen venue without investors.
How she enhances her life outside of work: My commitment to helping to end hunger is very important. I donate all of our leftover food to the Broward Partnership Homeless Shelter. We recently became involved with supporting LifeNet 4 Families and the community kitchen. Giving back to our local community and ending hunger couldn’t be more fulfilling.

Goals for 2017: For 2017, our focus is building our wedding segment and getting involved with more community outreach. We’re planning upcoming events with Make-A-Wish and United Way local chapters. This is expected to be our best year yet.

Shahmeer Alam AGE: 30
Why he’s in this group of 20: I’m an attorney by trade, but fell in in love with The Halal Guys—the famous gyro and chicken food cart—during a visit to New York City with my family in 2011. My partners and I had a meeting with The Halal Guys corporate in New York in November 2015, then we applied to become a franchisee for the brand. We received our acceptance for franchising in December 2015. At that point we started looking for the ideal space for our first location. I did all of this before the age of 30!
How he enhances his life outside of work:
I’m a criminal defense and commercial contracts attorney. As a lawyer, it’s my goal to ensure that each individual is protected by their constitutional rights—they have their liberties and rights intact and they receive due process. I am also a Guardian Ad Litem, where I make sure that a child is cared for properly, is in a safe environment, and that the child’s best interest is ensured.
Proudest accomplishment:
Said simply, having my mother say she’s proud of me and commending my success.
Goals for 2017:
I plan to work hard and strive to build The Halal Guys brand in South Florida but, most importantly, to give back to the community that has supported us along this journey.

Katrina Blanco AGE: 23
Why she’s in this group of 20: As a corporate event planner by day and fashion blogger by night, my time is usually split between my profession and my passion. My blog is my space to discuss fashion the way I want to see fashion being talked about while also giving my readers fun tips and tricks on how to style their wardrobes; it’s a balance of a bit of everything.
How she enhances her life outside of work: It would be nice to say that I teach yoga on the side and am learning a fourth language to help expand my horizons, but in all honesty, my blog and my job are my life. I love what I do daily and my blog helps me surface and conceptualize my passion into words and pictures. I’m obsessed with both aspects of my life and work hard to make it better each day.
Proudest accomplishment: My proudest accomplishment thus far is, hands down, starting my blog. Publishing that first post was the hardest, scariest, most nauseating challenge for me. I delayed posting for about two months out of fear alone, but seeing the overwhelming positive response and knowing that the hardest part is just starting made it so much easier to hit publish and just run with it.
Goal for 2017: In 2017, my goal is consistency and growth. I plan to grow this blog into a successful website and if I focus on steady growth and learning week after week, I know I’ll be able to achieve more than I set out to do.
The motto she lives by: Just. Keep. Moving. Also: You never know until you try.

April (Dr. Patty) Patterson AGE: 34
Why she’s in this group of 20: I’m the CEO of Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique & Spa in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. We are a chic dental boutique that caters to a highend clientele in Fort Lauderdale. I spend half my time in the business as a cosmetic dentist with a niche in smile makeovers with dental veneers, implant surgery and cosmetic braces.
How she enhances her life outside of work:
I was recently the co- chair of the March of Dimes luncheon. I was so happy to be part of such a great cause.
Proudest accomplishment:
Figuring out how to keep my Pomeranian after adopting him from the Humane Society of Fort Lauderdale. He had already been returned twice and I later found out that it was because of his severe separation anxiety. I made him a part of my life both personally and professionally. He has become a service dog and goes to the office whenever I go. He helps calm my clients who suffer from dental anxiety. Oliver has become famous in his own right and is now loved by many, especially me.
Goal for 2017:
To spend less time at the dental chair and more time on the yoga mat. I also hope to use more resources toward training for my staff in 2017. My goal is to give at least $20,000 to my favorite charities and causes in our community. I hope to bring on two exceptional associate dentists and expand my business with a second location. This is the Big Year!

Where focus goes, energy flows.

Toni Losada AGE: 39
Why she’s in this group of 20: I help people look beautiful using products that are nontoxic. I’m partnered with a company called Monat Global that sells salon-quality, non-toxic, anti-aging haircare products. We have products for all hair types for men, women and children, including a line for regrowth, using all botanically based ingredients with zero harmful chemicals.
How she enhances her life outside of work: It’s important for me to educate others about healthier options of products, foods and lifestyle changes that they can make to help reduce the risk of chronic diseases. I run a social media group called “Nontoxic Toni,” which is a non-selling site where people can share safer products that they use, ideas, tips, recipes and ask questions.
Proudest accomplishment: In 2015, I was diagnosed with and beat cancer. That negative situation turned into something positive. As I started researching a healthier lifestyle, I stumbled upon Monat and decided to sign up and start sharing it with the world. I can now work from home, get paid for washing my hair, and help others have awesome hair all while using nontoxic products.
Goal for 2017: Continue to spread the word and inspire people to make healthier lifestyle choices, build my shampoo empire, and help my friends and teammates find financial freedom.
The motto she lives by: Don’t sweat the small stuff...and everything is small stuff.

1. Shift Your Skincare
Even though we don’t undergo the extreme weather changes that other states experience, our skin-care routines still need to shift with the seasons. Medical esthetician Dora Salazar says to take a triple-threat approach to obtaining a fresh face for spring: exfoliate, stimulate and nourish. “You can make a simple exfoliating facial scrub at home by mixing brown sugar, honey and olive oil. It’s great for dehydrated skin,” explains Salazar. To stimulate the skin, she suggests using at-home technologies like LightStim, which is an LED light therapy, or a microcurrent facial lifting device such as NuFace or ZIIP Beauty. And when it comes to nourishing your skin, Salazar says to feed your face with a strong vitamin C product like Dermophisiologique Vita C ($80), which boasts a potent 25 percent of vitamin C. 13055 W. your closet: Neutrals. “Take your favorite neutral blouse and pair it with a fringed shoe or pant in the color of the season, Niagara, which is a soft blue denim shade.” So, what items should you spring for this season? “One of the best ways to recharge your wardrobe is by adding new accessories,” advises Saucier. “Sunglasses are an inexpensive way to refresh your look, and this season it’s all about the round shape.” www.saucistyle.com
3. Detox Your Diet
Cleaning up your diet this season is just as important as cleaning your home. Renew healthy eating habits by making a choice to eliminate as many processed foods as possible and opt for whole foods. “Juicing is an easy way to start a plant-based diet,” says Barry
2. Wake Up Your Wardrobe Instead of buying an entirely new wardrobe this Spring, stylist Caitlin Saucier of Sauci Style suggests reimagining items already in your closet. “Revamp key pieces such as a scarf. Take it from tying it around your neck to looping it around your handbag,” she says. “The bomber jacket was also a must for fall. Pair it with a floral top or dress.” The other trending item you’re sure to have in

Rapkin, owner of the new Raw Juce Weston. “Most of our juices contain three to five pounds of fruits and vegetables. It’s often hard for people to eat that many vegetables.” Rapkin suggests that beginners start with tasty fruit juices like the Berry Peary Chia, which is made of pear, pineapple, strawberries and chia seeds. Another healthy swap? Trade ice cream for açai bowls, which are chock full of the Brazilian superfood açai, fruits and nut butters. Surprisingly, Rapkin doesn’t think we all need to kick our coffee habit, just what we put in it, such as artificial sweeteners and creamers. 4. Beat the Burnout
Already ditched your New Year’s resolutions to get into the best shape of your life? Spring offers the chance to revive your workout. “Don’t always do the same routine. Mix up your exercise by trying different classes such as barre, spinning, boot camp, circuits, Zumba and pilates. These classes allow you to train your muscles in speed, balance, power and flexibility,” says Katherine Gomez, owner of K Cycle Studio, one of the many new cycling studios opening in Weston. Gomez also recommends freshening up your workout wardrobe. “Look for bright colors that will boost your energy and confidence.” And if

you’re looking for a workout buddy, join a weekly running club like the Weston Run Club for extra motivation to keep exercising. 5. Free Your Mind
With so much going on in the world right now, we all need to quiet our minds. While meditation is becoming more mainstream, for many it’s still daunting. “Meditation is really not that complicated when it is understood.
Think of it as the cessation of thought or the space between two thoughts,” explains RoseAnn Rajni Sbona, owner of The Prana Lab, who points out there isn’t just one way to meditate. “Find a style that best suits you. There are guided meditations, silent meditations, musically driven, walking, even coloring books are popular these days to teach the mind to focus and be in the moment.” Other ways to invigorate your mind: Find time to reconnect with an old friend, start journaling, and spend more time in nature. 6. Flower Power
(WITH A BREATH OF FRESH AIR) Nothing says Spring renewal like blooming flowers and plants. “A great way to refresh your home is to choose plants that have citrus tones, or succulents that are lemonlime in color,” says Kim Fuentes, co-owner of Ann’s Florist Las Olas. “You also want to look for plants which will help purify the air, like Sansevieria, philodendron, spider plants and the Peace Lily.” Another way to “up” your flower game is to update your containers. “Instead of metallic or heavy stone, upgrade to lighter textures like clear glass, wicker or the trendy macramé plant hangers.” One more idea: Plant an herb garden for a fragrant smell and ingredients for delicious meals. Ann’s Florist Las Olas, 1001 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale | 954-7613334 | www.annsfloristlasolas.com.
7. Switch Your Scent
Whether it’s your house or personal fragrance, it’s also time to alter your scent. Replace heavy, wintry candles for clear diffusers that a boast a lighter, floral smell like ZODAX Jardin de Rochelle Porcelain Diffuser in Chrysanthemum or Peony. “I think sometimes people tend to choose overpowering floral smells, and these aren’t too strong,” says Fuentes of Ann’s Florist. “The diffusers have a beautiful presentation with a porcelain flower that looks like a work of art or an expensive perfume bottle.” When it comes to perfume or cologne, try out a luxury fragrance subscription service like Scent Bird, which allows customers to try a 30-day supply of a designer fragrance of their choice—and there are more than 450 choices. ScentBird, $14.95 a month, at www. scentbird.com; Jardin de Rochelle Porcelain Diffusers sold at Ann’s Florist Las Olas.

8. Declutter Your Life
Nothing makes you feel lighter than a clean, de-cluttered house. “The first decision is to choose a place to start. Is it the desktop, the floor or your e-mail folders? Look at what is creating the most stress or anxiety and start in that area,” advises professional organizer Jennifer Alman of Organize and Systemize LLC. “I often suggest clearing off the areas that you use every day first, like the top of your desk. At home, maybe it is where you handle the mail or the items on the guest bed.” Use this opportunity to discard things that you rarely use. Alman suggests The Stuff Shop, a free resource that provides information on charities and organizations in your area that can use your unwanted stuff. “The Stuff Shop can help you find new homes for everything from light bulbs, buttons and fabric to musical instruments and much more.” And if you want a different look in your home, reposition furniture, paint a room a fresh new color, or hang some new photos or artwork. Organize and Systemize LLC, 954-328- 8052 | www.organizeandsystemize. com; www.thestuffshop.com.
Now that you’ve cleaned house, it’s time to create new habits that will ensure the clutter doesn’t build again. “Don’t leave dishes in the sink to soak if they don’t have stuck-on food. Wash them right away or put them directly in the dishwasher,” Alman suggests. “Make a habit of cleaning the stovetop after each use. If something spills over into the drip pan while cooking, promptly remove and wash it.” She also advises to do one load of laundry per day, depending on the number of people in your home, to keep clothes from being strewn everywhere. To mind your floors, keep a handheld vacuum near the bathroom/kitchen to easily sweep up pesky hairs and crumbs. “Take five minutes to tidy up the busiest rooms in your house before going to bed, putting papers, newspapers, clothes and shoes in their proper place.” And don’t forget your car. “Car organization is a daily chore. When arriving home, bring everything in that was added to the car that day. Put a garbage can in the garage for immediate disposable of trash.”
10. Rev Up Your Routine
Monotony can be your worst enemy, so this Spring, break your routine. Learn a new language, take a painting or photography class, or do something really daring. If you’ve always wanted to skydive (but don’t want to physically jump out of a plane), try the new iFLY in Davie, an indoor skydiving facility. You’ll slip into a flight suit and goggles, and a flight instructor will show you how to “fly.” Once you’re inside the flight chamber, you’ll experience the thrill of safely soaring through the air. “Watching people fly for the first time is a life-changing experience,” says Jim Braun, general manager for iFLY Fort Lauderdale. iFly Fort Lauderdale, 11690 West State Road 84, Davie | 954.280.4359 |www.iflyworld.com/fort-lauderdale

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Importance of Colon Cancer Screening Colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. But how much do you really know about colon cancer? Colon Brenda Jimenez, MD cancer is one of few diseases where benign tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Therefore, preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think.
Prevention and Detection You can help avoid colon cancer just by getting screened. “If we detect precancerous polyps during a colonoscopy, we can remove them at the same time, before they turn into cancer,” says Brenda Jimenez, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist. That’s one reason colon cancer is so preventable. “It takes approximately 10 years for a small colon polyp to become cancerous,” she adds.
Other tests for colon cancer include sigmoidoscopy, fecal occult blood test and CT colonoscopy. However, if they show any abnormality, a colonoscopy is needed.
Who is at risk of colon cancer? Everyone is at risk of developing colon cancer. Over 75% of patients who are diagnosed have had no identifiable risk factors. People at increased risk include those with a strong family history of the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis. These patients are at moderate to high risk. The risk is particularly strong if the first degree relative with cancer was less than age 60. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. Other common risk factors are; age, obesity, physical inactivity, diet, alcohol and tobacco use. Symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or anemia. Patients with symptoms should have an examination of the whole colon called colonoscopy. People with no symptoms should be screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50.
Are there symptoms? According to the American Cancer Society, colon polyps often don’t cause any symptoms, particularly in the early stages. That’s why screening is so important. You may have polyps and not know it. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings for everyone age 50 and older, age 45 or older if African-American. Your doctor may recommend earlier screenings if you have a family history or other high risk of colon polyps or cancer. t was 2001. The doctor shouted, “You’re going to die!” as Raoul Valle left the medical office, refusing to undergo what he considered poisonous chemotherapy and radiation treatment for prostate cancer. At six feet and 260 pounds, the construction business owner and former paramedic firefighter was also battling heart disease. After a steady diet of grilled steak, ice cream and high-fat, processed foods, his body was rapidly breaking down. Valle speculated there was another way to heal. Armed with mountains of research, he discovered intravenous high-dose Vitamin C therapy, traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, for ozone therapy treatments and attended the Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach. At the same time, he began a raw food diet. The combination of natural therapies, treatments and diet transformed his life. “Nine months after I went raw, everything was normal. The cancer was gone. I was down to 179 pounds. The doctor thought she had the wrong file because the numbers were so good,” says Valle.

Valle was passionate about raw food and its healing properties; so much so, in fact, that he closed his construction business in 2006 and opened The Green Wave Café, a tiny, unassuming “plant-based gourmet, all-living organic foods café.” It’s a mouthful for the unassuming spot easily overlooked in the Plantation Village shopping center off West Broward Boulevard. Nearby, a sign reads “Historic Plantation, where the city’s first homes were built in the 1940s.” On what was once rural farmland, the Green Wave Café goes back to the basics, feeding devoted customers flavorful, raw, natural, organic, vegan cuisine using plant-based ingredients along with nuts and seeds and fresh or dried organic herbs and seasonings and dehydrated goodies “that mimic the real thing.” Valle and his team make onion bread, spinach and golden flax crackers, almond bread and caramelized onions in a dehydrator. A menu special, chicken wings made out of breaded cauliflower, was an instant hit. Although Valle changes the menu every few months, he adds new items based on collaborations with his chef and travel discoveries like soaked wild rice dishes, which are Valle’s interpretation of a raw Vietnamese restaurant in California that’s run by a Buddhist monk who’s taken a vow of silence. Lunch and dinner menu favorites include Super Nachos, crisp chips loaded with walnut meat paté, cashew red pepper cheese, fresh guacamole and salsa ($12.50); Signature Cheeseburger, a raw nut-based dehydrated patty with red pepper cheesy cream sauce on a choice of onion bread or almond bread, served with marinated mushrooms ($14.50); Burrito Fiesta, an enormous, raw red pepper wrap filled with walnut meat paté, homemade guacamole, fresh salsa and “the cheesiest of cheese” (14.50), and Steak Teriyaki, wild rice soaked in a special coconut tree sap, ginger, onion and cayenne pepper teriyaki sauce, accompanied by creamy cashew cheese with avocado and topped with slices of portobello mushrooms ($14.50). The spices (from Frontier Coop) make every dish burst with authentic flavors. Mouthwatering desserts include cheesecake made from silky smooth cashews and walnuts, coconut and dates ($10-$12). New to the café on Sundays are brunch and “Dinner and a Movie” or “Dinner and Demo.” The lineup for the latter changes every week, so call for details. What excites Valle most about his Green Wave Café? “You know what? The appreciation from clients,” he says. “A man with diabetes came in and hugged me for a full five minutes. A doctor arrived in

tears and said I saved her life. People come in every week and tell me I changed their lives. There’s nothing more gratifying.” The man whose happiness and good health radiate from within lectures every semester at Florida International University’s “Happiness at Work” class. “Being healthy is one of the main ingredients of being happy,” says Valle. “Being healthy is the most lucrative richness you can have.” The Green Wave Café is open Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. With just five tables and 19 seats, no reservations are necessary. At the Mercedes showroom, 43 is where Benz ends and AMG begins.

ercedes-Benz has more models than New York and Milan combined, and it’s easy to get them all confused, especially since none of them have proper names like Gisele or Naomi but rather meaningless alphanumerics that seem to change every year. Well, to simplify things somewhat, the Three-Pointed Star range can generally be separated into two camps: Mercedes-Benz models, and Mercedes-AMG models, the latter engineered from the tires up for a more intensified driving experience, with cabin and styling enhancements to match. All AMG models are well-balanced machines: not only are they faster, but they stop and handle better, too. These days, there’s at least one AMG version of nearly every Mercedes in the lineup, at the very pinnacle of the range. So powerful and pricey have AMG’s flagship products become, however, that there’s now room for “AMG-lite” models to slot in between the standard models and today’s steroidal AMGs. Instead of barrel-chested, 500-plus-horsepower V-8s underhood, these new “43” models brandish prolific, twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engines and quick-shifting 9-speed automatic transmissions. Stronger brakes, tighter suspensions and sinister interiors with lots of metal trim are also part of the deal, and most get sexy red seat belts, too. As with AMG’s halo

products, powertrain response and ride comfort can be adjusted instantaneously via a toggle switch on the console. Mild or wild, your choice. So far, nine Mercedes models—five cars and four crossovers—are offered with these milder AMG sportifications. The cars include the SLC43 roadster, the C-Class-based C43 sedan, coupe and cabriolet models, and the mid-sized E43 sedan. The crossovers include the compact GLC43 and mid-size GLE43, both of which are offered in standard SUV or slant-back “coupe” profiles. All but the SLC43 roadster feature standard all-wheel drive. We spent a day driving around in the whole lot of ‘em in California and found that while none offered the burly rumble of their V-8-powered brethren, each is as brilliant to drive as it is beautiful to behold. Here are our three favorites.
wheel life
What is AMG?
AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher, Großaspach, the first two words being the surnames of AMG founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and Großaspach being Aufrecht’s birth town. AMG has been tinkering with Mercedes-Benzes since 1967, ultimately becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG in 2005 and becoming famous for its prodigious V-8 and V-12 engines, which are built by hand by a single engineer who signs the engine cover upon completion. While the one-man, one-engine philosophy doesn’t apply to the new “43” models, each benefits nonetheless from AMG’s half-century of experience turning Stuttgart’s finest automobiles into serious performance machines.

2017 MERCEDES-AMG C43 CABRIOLET ($61,325)
The C43 sedan is nice, the C43 coupe is sexy, but let’s be real: our blessed Florida weather virtually begs for the C43 cabriolet. Its rocksolid structure allows the C43 to ride on a road-hugging suspension without shaking to bits, and even with its additional top-related weight, the 362-hp C43 is quick, hitting 60 mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds, according to Mercedes. When the rain inevitably comes, the C43’s multi-layer cloth top raises in less than 20 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph, you know, in case the stoplight turn green while the top is mid-pike. But what we love most about the C43 cabriolet are hearing its snarky engine note echo off nearby buildings when we’re driving fast and basking in the admiration of passersby when we’re not. Make ours red.

hold, the GLC43 coupe is certainly more sport than utility, yet the rear seat remains eminently adult-friendly and, well, look at it: it’s gorgeous. It’s also quick: with 362 horsepower, 0–60 mph takes a scant 4.8 seconds, and cornering grip rivals that of road-hugging sport sedans. Yet it retains some ruggedness, with an 11.8-inch fording depth allowing passage through some water-logged paths that would bring most performance cars to a halt.
2017 MERCEDES-AMG E43 SEDAN ($73,325)
Based on the outstanding, all-new 2017 E-Class, the E43 is the most decadent and technologically advanced of all 43 models. All the whizbang features offered on the regular E-Class can be had on the E43, including colorful, reconfigurable, side-by-side 12.3-inch dashboard screens, sexy nighttime illumination and optional heated massaging seats, but only the E43 can hurl all that luxury forward with the help of 396 ponies. If you’re in a hurry, mile-a-minute speeds are just 4.5 seconds away, and when you’re not, the E43’s luxurious confines will never let you forget you’re in a Mercedes. Among the new 43s, it offers the richest blend of luxury and performance.
