WHAT’S GOING ON IN TOWN & ITS SURROUNDS…

IMMACULATE concept Sudsies owner Jason Loeb has answered his customers’ call for a dry cleaner that takes care of them, their luxury clothing and the environment.

40

APRIL 2016

Sudsies owner Jason Loeb (center, in color) surrounded by employees in his Miami store.

Brooklyn-born and raised in Miami Beach, Jason Loeb is a people person—and we’re not using that term loosely. At 48, the entrepreneur and visionary actually says, “We’re in the people business,” and he’s not just issuing sound bites. Once he decided to launch Sudsies, Loeb’s operation catering to clients who want to feel confident handing over their high-end clothing for cleaning, he did his research, even conducting polls to gain insight into what consumers wanted most from a dry cleaning operation. What did he find out? “People want you to take care of them,” he says. “If they bring you a challenge, they want to feel they are being heard; that you’ll treat them well and accommodate their needs.” Sudsies does just that and more for its 85,000 customers—who are not just local, but as far-flung as Hawaii—ensuring that their designer and couture pieces are treated with the utmost of care and delivered back to them in pristine condition, at their convenience. “We are a store on wheels, offering everything from pickup to delivery; we’ll go to your neighborhood six days a week if you want,” Loeb notes. “We custom-tailor our delivery schedule to what you need.” All that, and they’re environmentally conscious, eschewing common dry cleaning solvents like tetrachloroethylene for the more eco-friendly hydrocarbon, an organic compound of hydrogen and carbon that also eliminates that tell-tale dry cleaning odor. As Loeb says, Sudsies aims to please. “We find out what our customers’ expectations are, and then exceed them.” A formula for success, indeed.

shape shift

Let’s get moving and kick our bodies into gear for healthier and happier living. Who’s with me? By Katina Taylor

5 Ways to SPRING into ACTION NOW Why wait another day to feel a pep in your step and a happier and healthier vibe? • Hire a professional trainer. Most

of us don’t know where to begin in the gym. I passionately recommend getting a jumpstart in the right direction with a knowledgeable trainer, even if it’s for just one session or a month of sessions. I hired one 10 years ago and it was the best gift I ever gave myself. You might think you can’t afford a trainer, but there are many different options available. Calling and asking questions is free. And giving up a night out for dinner so you can afford one session will be well worth it. A few of my friends that happen to be at the top of their training game and will point you in the right direction of your goals include Billy Beck III and Michelle Diaz at BB3, Steve Van Zandt at SVZ Performance, Terry Kirby at Ultimate Sports Institute, and Sandor Morris and Martha Theran at Midtown Athletic Club.

46

APRIL 2016

• Recruit a dedicated workout buddy. This is a good idea for those who

already have the basic workout knowledge, but need motivation to show up and not give up. Find a friend that is close to your fitness level and is as dedicated as you want to be or more.

• Join group fitness classes and schedule them in ink on the calendar. Plan for the month. If you

can’t squeeze in the Pilates class, ballet barre, spinning, trainer or workout buddy, write in a 30-minute home workout. If you’re a beginner and have spent a few sessions with a trainer, he or she can write you an at-home program and walk you through the exercises with correct form.

• Plan your weekly grocery list and prepare foods in advance if necessary. Being prepared in the nutrition department is key to feeling and looking your best. Stock up on water, foods closest to their natural source, avoid processed foods and eat every 3-4 hours.

• Challenge yourself to keep learning, inspiring and motivating others. No matter your fitness level, you can inspire others to get healthier. We look our best when we feel good. Workouts should make you feel stronger and have more energy. If you are leaving a workout sore for a week or feeling injured, something needs to change. Listen to your body and treat it with care. Now go and inspire others to spring into action!

all well & good SPRING CLEAN YOUR PANTRY

Katina demonstrates the new ISOPHIT machine with Steve Van Zandt at SVZ Performance.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, have more energy, be healthier and or teach your family healthier eating habits it all starts with you, your pantry and your fridge.

Here are a few of my tips:

PHOTO: RICARDO MEJIA

• TOSS OUT THE OBVIOUS JUNK FOOD.

FITNESS FIND: ISOPHIT Steve Van Zandt, owner of SVZ Performance Training Facility in Davie, who has more credentials and hours of study and training than one can count, has invested in this innovative isometric strength training exercise system that works more than 650 muscles, which only two other gyms in Florida own. Get stronger without moving a muscle and with less wear and tear on your joints, you ask? You heard me. Isometric contraction occurs when a muscle contracts without changing its length or causing any movement of the bone to which it is attached. This is what occurs

with your biceps, for example, when you pause anywhere along the lifting and lowering phase of a bicep curl—your muscles are working without shortening or lengthening. Isometric training is known to help accelerate fat loss. “It is able to spot reduce fat in particular areas,” Van Zandt explains. “Muscle draws blood flow to the area, muscle stays contracted, blood is forced into the adipose tissue of local area, leading to an increase in metabolic activity. It’s like doing a burnout in your car. It’s the most fuel-inefficient way to drive your car, yet it

burns the most gasoline—calories, for your body—in the same time period.” Van Zandt had me hold different positions and it was up to me how much I wanted to squeeze and how much tension I wanted my muscles to be under. Isometric exercises may be helpful to someone who has been injured or has a condition such as arthritis, which could make movement painful or aggravated by using muscles to move a joint through full range of motion. For more information, stop by SVZ Performance, 11376 W SR 84, Davie, or visit www.svz.performance.com.

MY QUICK AND EASY GO-TO SALAD Want a fresh and crisp salad with a little crunch? This is your lunch. INGREDIENTS: • • • • •

48

Butter lettuce torn into bite-size pieces Cucumbers, peeled and sliced Organic tomatoes, quartered Avocado (bite-size pieces) Corn (optional)

APRIL 2016

• Himalayan Fine Pink Salt (slightly salt veggies to taste before tossing into salad) • Slivered almonds (toasted a few minutes on the stove till brown) • Add grilled shrimp, chicken, salmon or steak • Balsamic dressing or olive oil and vinegar

Sodas, cookies, candy, ice cream, cheese puffs, chips, sugar-filled juices and highly processed foods that can sit on your shelf for years. Pick them up only occasionally as a guilt-free treat.

• STOCK UP ON HEALTHY FOOD OPTIONS. Water, veggies, fruits, greens like lettuce, kale and spinach, nuts, salsa, hummus, eggs, yogurt, granola, lean proteins, sweet potatoes and guacamole are just a few.

• MODERATION AND BALANCE IS KEY. I can repeat this until I’m blue in the face: Find your balance. I am constantly learning and trying to improve my health, but I allow myself a treat almost daily. I predominately make healthy choices throughout my day, so a treat in moderation keeps me happy and guilt-free.

I’M INSPIRED IN MY WORK DAILY BY… The generous,

dedicated and driven community members I get to work alongside each day. My role allows me the opportunity to collaborate with our community’s best and brightest as we all work toward a common goal: making Broward County the best place to live, love, work and raise a family. MY PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT IN THIS ROLE THUS FAR IS… The creation, execu-

tion and success of United Way of Broward County’s Mission United initiative. Through the collaboration of many, many community agencies and the generosity of organizations like JM Family Enterprises, Inc., Mission United has provided critical services to more than 3,000 veterans and their families in Broward County. The ability to play even the smallest part in giving back to those who have given so much for our country has been more humbling and fulfilling than I ever could have imagined. I STILL PLAN TO... Make

Broward County the strongest, most united community. While we have experienced much success and changed so many lives, there is still a great amount of work to be done. That’s what gets me out of bed each morning—the desire to make an even greater impact. AT THE END OF MY TENURE, I HOPE TO LOOK BACK AND FEEL THAT I’VE...

Made a difference, changed a life, and inspired others to stand up, speak out and give back.

greatest moments have been watching others become successful because they were given an opportunity where they could succeed, and they have. And I love looking back now at projects that were by all standards in “transitional areas.” From Il Villaggio in South Beach to one of the first buildings ever built in Sunny Isles Beach, Ocean One. Las Olas Riverhouse, one of the very first high rises built on Las Olas, and now Sabbia Beach, which is a real game changer for this hidden little jewel of a town in Pompano Beach.

move some fat around It seems there are always new procedures coming around to help sculpt our bodies, but this spring you can actually target that stubborn double-chin fat, back fat, and even those pockets that detract from your underarm area during tank-top and bikini season. “Fat has become a primary focus of facial rejuvenation and aesthetic enhancement of the body and buttocks,” Dr. Charles Messa. says Weston plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Messa, of Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center. “Removal and transfer is now an integral part of many cosmetic surgical procedures. The latest treatment modalities focus not on the addition of fat cells, but rather the nonsurgical removal of unwanted fat deposits through injection or freezing techniques.” Thanks to Kybella injections and Zeltiq Coolsculpting’s new applicators, the double chin may soon be a thing of the past for certain patients that suffer from localized fat in that area. “A chemical known as deoxycholic acid (Kybella) is injected to dissolve the fat. Similar patients also may benefit from the smaller Coolsculpting applicators to reduce fat in this region as well as other stubborn areas, like the underarms and bra fat around the back. These treatments require little to no downtime with documented results over time. Additionally, Galderma has enhanced its soft tissue filler line by modifying their hyaluronic acid product Restylane to provide a more ideal product for fine lines around the mouth and face in Restylane Silk and Restylane Lyft for enhancement of the cheeks and midface region.” For more information or to schedule a consultation, call Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center at 954-659-7760 or visit www.westoncosmeticsurgery.com.

Linda Tical, owner of Goddess Lashes, is all about the eyes, from the brows to the lashes and the surrounding area. Tical, who has a studio in her Pembroke Pines home but also travels to customers in need of her magic touch, is a master at individual eyelash extensions, eyelash correction (just in case yours ended up looking wonky from the last place you tried), lash lifts, dips and tinting, eyebrow design, tinting, reconstruction, embroidery, microblading, extensions and henna, as well as permanent makeup (think eyeliner, lip liner and brows). “I started Goddess Lashes 10 years ago in 2006 and began doing brow extensions two years ago, as it’s a very new, emerging service,” says Tical, a native of Italy who travels around the world to train with the top instructors in their fields to bring the latest beauty trends and innovative beauty services to South Florida. “Lashes are incredibly transformative. They immediately make someone look 10 to 15 years younger; they give you an instant eye lift, a more rested appearance and are a great boost to confidence as well. Most people do not know they can enhance their bottom lashes, too, which will complement and balance out the eye, resulting in a more complete look. They also help diffuse under-eye bags, wrinkles and discoloration.” Tical says that brow enhancements are the second-most transformative service after eyelash extensions, as the eyebrows frame one’s face. “There are numerous new semi-permanent services, such as brow henna and reconstruction, and more permanent like brow microblading for those with sparse brows,” she points out. Every service Tical offers is tailored to the specific individual according to that person’s lashes, with prices ranging from $250+ for full sets while brow extensions start at $175+. Dr. Patty of Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique decided to start including things like massage, Botox, etc. as part of her practice because she wanted to make it “the one-stop dental office that I’d want to go to. It would fit my lifestyle and my needs, so I felt there must be others who had the same desires.” That means that instead of trying to find time in your already packed schedule to make separate appointments for teeth whitening, Botox and facials, you can take care of everything at once. Dr. Patty says that most commonly, clients who come in for their three-month cleaning procedure will also have their three-month Botox “maintenance” injection along with a facial, or clients who come in to have a smile makeover with veneers or an implant surgery will first take their anti-anxiety medication and have a facial or massage while it starts to take effect. “They will then enter my surgical dental suite totally relaxed and we can start their IV sedation and complete the procedure,” she explains. “When the procedure is done, all they remember is having had a relaxing spa treatment.” As a spring pick-me-up, she recommends Hydradermabrasion, the latest technique of crystal-free exfoliation that utilizes the natural healing powers of water and oxygen to effortlessly exfoliate the skin without the use of hard crystals or abrasive textured wands to generate deeply hydrated and healthier looking skin. make up as you go “Spring is a time for newness,” says longtime celebrity makeup artist Leslie Munsell, who is also the creator of Beauty For Real, a cosmetics line that focuses on the absolute ultimate in essential beauty products that every woman needs. And Munsell would know what those are. Each item has been created to offer women the very best formulas, colors and package designs that make buying and using makeup both easy and fun. “For example, we have LED lights and mirrors on our lip glosses and lip creams, our Blush + Glo has both a highlighter and a blush, and our (Total) Glo is a must for headto-toe beauty,” she says. Her spring 2016 forecast? “The freshest look for the season will include a transparent pop of color on the cheeks and beautifully highlighted, luminescent skin. Pair this with either a bright, sheer lip gloss or a more full-color lip cream and black mascara. You’ll have an updated, modern look that’s also quick and easy.”

HERE ARE LESLIE MUNSELL’S SUGGESTIONS FOR CREATING THE PERFECT SPRING LOOK: ✱ Always begin with a sunscreen, either in your moisturizer or your foundation. ✱ Try Beauty For Real Blush + Glo in Coral Crush/Hi Beam. This is a creamto-powder formula that works perfectly for color and highlighter in warm, humid climates. ✱ Hi- Def Mascara will be your new favorite mascara. It lengthens and volumizes, creating full, gorgeous lashes in a flash. The formula doesn’t budge, even in July. ✱ If you’re a newcomer to color on your lips, try our Lip Goss + Shine in Light My Fire, which looks red in the bottle but goes on sheer with just a bit of color. If you love color, try our Lip Cream + Color in Really Red—it’s bold enough to stop traffic! PURCHASE BEAUTY FOR REAL PRODUCTS ONLINE BY VISITING WWW.BEAUTYFORREAL.COM.

HEN SARAH BARBER-BAZAIL WAS COMMISSIONED to redesign a Mediterranean-style home in Miramar for a pair of doctors, the Brazilian husband asked for a neutral hotel vibe. While the Cuban wife agreed on the hotel concept for their house, she was more smitten with color and texture. “He wanted to feel like he was walking through a tranquil hotel when he came home from work,” says Barber-Bazail, who is based in Miami and once worked for Roche Bobois. “She liked the idea but wanted more color and texture with patterns. So I created a calming, neutral palette for him and added wallpaper for her.” In 2013, the couple, who now have a baby, knew what they wanted when they began the interior design process but they weren’t sure how to articulate it. The job, which took three years to fully complete, was to change the cookie-cutter interior into a beautiful and functional home. They felt Barber-Bazail, an international traveler who is originally from Utah and who had moved to Miami in 2001, was the perfect designer to achieve their goals in the 3,500- to 4,000-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 3 ½-bath home. The floor was an existing marble, and the walls were a grayish tone. The house was in good shape structurally and didn’t need major restoration, but it was bland and “vanilla.” The designer encountered challenges from the beginning, but nothing she couldn’t handle. “I had to remember all the way through the process that the owners were about to have a baby,” says BarberDesigner Sarah Barber-Bazail said she turned a “cookie cutter Bazail. “So the house had to be kid-friendly and aesthetically pleasing, with house” into an aesthetically pleasing, kid-friendly home.

durable rugs and light fabric colors with appropriate tweeds and textures.” Keeping it in the hotel mode while maintaining a sense of privacy and residency—as well as remaining within the couple’s budget—were challenges, but Barber-Bazail enjoyed the project and felt it went smoothly. “They were such super people, it was easy to work with them,” she says. Then there was the issue of the height of the husband and of the members of his family, some of who tower over other people. “Members of his family are tall, and he is tall, so I had to accommodate for that in the selections I made.” Making good use of the walls was one solution. At the entrance area to the home, which is located in a Miramar community, there are niches. Here Barber-Bazail lent texture to the design by enlisting the walls. She used beautiful handmade ceramic sculptures on wallpaper made of taupe grasscloth. She was able to give the area flair and refinement without the fear of hanging anything that could accidentally hit heads. The living room is elegant, with custom

off-white linen drapery bordered in dark gray. There is enough furniture to make it functional, but not so much that it looks cluttered. For one thing, both doctors love to entertain their friends and large families in the home. So there had to be plenty of space to mill around in without the stress of rubbing elbows with anyone else or feeling crowded. “When people enter the house, the first thing they see is the living room,” says Barber-Bazail, who used the green of the plants to add some light color. She used an animal-skin area rug for both style and function. A large starburst mirror over the sofa gets people talking and admiring the beauty of the furnishings, which are understated and classic, much like a guest would indeed find in a boutique hotel lobby. The dining room is another area where the designer was able to satisfy the wife’s desire for color, texture and pattern. The walnut table is custom, the chairs are elephant gray, and the wallpaper is gray and off-white with golden brass

accents. There is another brass accent piece to amplify the idea as well as a row of framed abstract photos that offer more color. “This room is delightful, but we had to make the chairs tall, which the husband loves…but the wife’s feet don’t quite touch the ground,” Barber-Bazail laughs. The breakfast nook, located off of the kitchen, features a simple, threependant chandelier, a large framed contemporary photograph with subtle tones, and the same marble flooring as is used in the rest of the house. For the family room, the husband wanted a deep, clean, modern sofa, so the designer custom-made him one in the right height. She embellished it with perky turquoise and mustardcolored throw pillows. “He wanted a couch where he would be comfortable lying down and relaxing,” says Barber-Bazail. “Underneath, I used a gray rug.” That cozy and serene sitting vignette carries over from the living room theme. Both rooms are designed with lots of open space for ease of movement and access to the outdoor pool area. The designer used the guest baths to show off more great pattern. The pool/guest bath is chic, with Koi wallpaper done in taupe gray with an ivory finish above a porcelain tile floor. A dark wood vanity with white sink against the gray gives the room a clean and finished feeling. The other guest bath is also decorated with wallpaper to give it movement. Done in off-white with silver and gold, the look combines a refined quiet with sense of style. A small framed picture that the wife likes—an old photo from Vogue magazine of a woman floating in a pool—adds color and more motion to the space dominated by a Restoration Hardware vanity. The house reflects what the couple knew they wanted from the beginning, even if they couldn’t quite describe it. “We were all happy with the results,” says Barber-Bazail. “I gave them what they had in their heads, and they told me that I nailed it.”

With a colorful lobby emulating the energy of South Beach and renovated suites resembling what you might expect on an exotic Caribbean island, The Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples is perfect for a family weekend getaway. The only all-suite beachfront hotel in Naples, the Edgewater Beach has a long and lasting relationship with this charming west coast Florida city. The hotel is located on 250 feet of sandy white beach along the Gulf of Mexico, where warm water, beautiful sunsets and outdoor sports enjoyed in balmy weather make this beach area a perfect weekend respite for families, couples or singles seeking solitude and a few healthy days of sun, swimming, boating, cycling and shopping. 15th STREET FISHERIES

Fort Lauderdale’s most idyllic waterfront seafood spot brings locals and out-of-town guests the best of casual elegance.

T

hose of us in South Florida appreciate Fort Lauderdale for its laid-back luxury, sugarysand beaches, trendy Las Olas Boulevard, 300+ miles of sparkling waterways and small-town feel. Fresh off its first-ever Taste of Fort Lauderdale Series, which marked its official South Beach Wine and Food Festival debut this past February, our beloved city also boasts an impressive dining scene. And in the center of its upscale eateries, seaside taverns, casual lunch spots, sexy lounges, delicious dive bars and more lies none other than 15th Street Fisheries, a casual-meets-elegant seafood spot right on shores of the Intracoastal. Sitting next to the 17th Street Causeway bridge, in the heart of Lauderdale Marina, Fort Lauderdale’s most famous nautical landmark, 15th Street Fisheries boasts some of the best views in the city. Welcoming patrons by foot, car and (since Lauderdale Marina is still in operation) boat, this local spot combines two dining experiences in one: luxurious, white-tablecloth dining upstairs, or casual fare dockside. Led by Executive Chef Ulises Mar, 15th Street Fisheries has become known across the globe for its friendly atmosphere and fresh seafood—like Florida stone crabs, red and yel-

Now celebrating its 38th year, the restaurant has earned countless accolades in nearly four decades, including, most recently, the 2015 Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence,” the Best of South Florida “Best Seafood Restaurant” and “Best Waterfront Restaurant” in 2015, OpenTable’s “2015 Diner’s Choice” and much more. Combining its extensive menu of seafood favorites with a charming and intimate atmosphere, 15th Street Fisheries is the just-right spot for everything from a quiet date to a large family gathering. Hovering over the Intracoastal below, the restaurant’s upstairs dining area promises an upscale dining experience; complemented by panoramic seaside views and “Old Florida” boathouse charm, this locale serves an inventive menu of upscale cuisine. Start with Citrus Black Mussels and Clams Colada appetizers, and move on to delectable entrées like Dry-Rubbed Mahi-Mahi, Provençal

More is Mejor PANNA expands its delicious reach into Weston.

Sixteen years ago, Mauricio Meneses and Beatriz Meneses Morrison purchased a service station in Weston that included food service in the form of PANNA. Eventually, the spot became a meeting point for Latinos in the area, particularly Colombians and Venezuelans. Thanks to the quality of its products and excellent service, the locale continued to become more popular, leading the brotherand-sister team to invest in its growth. Today, the family has taken the concept from a single store based out of a service station and turned it into a chain of well-loved Latin restaurants, where customers savor delicious mini ham-stuffed bread loaves (cachitos), breaded cheese sticks (tequeños), Colombian Pandebono, and empanadas from Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela. Lucky for us, the latest—the seventh, opened in February of this year—is located in Weston Town Center. Stop by 1731 Main Street and get addicted.

The expansion also includes the opening of a brand new concept in late May or June, Angelo Elia The Bakery Bar, which will offer up Italian pastries, breads, sandwiches, gelatos and coffee. Elia’s fifth location of his casual dining concept, Angelo Elia Pizza, Bar & Tapas, will be opening in Miami at CityPlace Doral in November, and in Aventura ParkSquare in 2017.

Huracán LP580-2

THE 2016 LAMBORGHINI

Huracán LP580-2

Huracán LP610-4 Spyder: Huracán force, applied two ways.

By Steve Siler

Huracán LP610-4 Spyder

F

loridians know a thing or two about hurricanes. But how much do we know about the Lamborghini Huracán, the junior supercar in the Lamborghini lineup? Certainly, it would be easy (and accurate) to judge any Huracán by just looking at it: every last one is as fast, loud and extreme as it appears. But as with the named storms that visit us on occasion, not all Huracáns are the same, with two derivatives introduced within the last few months.

LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN LP580-2 COUPE

The standard Huracán model, called the LP610-4, boasts a 602-horsepower V-10, four-wheel drive, and a demeanor that’s as serious as a NASA control room. But the Huracán has a more playful side, too, and as proof, Lamborghini just introduced the LP580-2 coupe, with the “2” referring to the fact that it only has two-wheel drive. What makes

110

APRIL 2016

it more playful? Well, despite the fact that it’s down a few ponies with “just” 572 horsepower, with all of them galloping just to the rear wheels makes the rear end a little more, um, dynamic. Ever heard of “drifting?” Yeah, that’s the stuff. If Bo and Luke Duke won the lottery, this is what they’d buy. Rest assured, there’s still a tremendous amount of grip before the rear wheels break loose, and any oversteer is announced clearly and is easily catchable. And if you think you might miss those 30 horsepower, you won’t. Interestingly, the LP580-2’s suspension is actually a tad softer than the standard car, making it someone more compliant over bumps, though you’ll never mistake this for a Bentley in that regard. When not being driven like a James Bond villain, the LP580-2 feels exactly like the standard Huracán, with which shares everything inside its tech-laden, eminently comfortable interior. The thinly padded

wheel life

There’s a $38,000 difference between the LP580-2 and the LP610-4, but either way you get a ridiculously sexy machine, each with its own advantages.

Advantage LP580-2:

racing seats and faux-suede steering wheel offer the perfect blend of support for track-day shenanigans and long-haul comfort, and the cool foot-wide TFT screen in front of the driver handles everything, including audio and Google Maps-enabled navigation information, all in glorious high definition. Best of all, no one on the street will know you saved $38,000 by opting for the LP580-2 over the LP610-4. Only the most eagle-eyed Lambo fans will note its modified front and rear bumpers and 19-inch wheels, versus the 20-inchers on the LP610-4. At a starting price of under $200K, this is not only the cheapest way you can ride out a Huracán, but with its lighter weight and frisky demeanor, it’s also the most fun.

LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN LP610-4 SPYDER

If the LP580-2 is targeted at well-heeled hooligans, the LP610-4 Spyder (or “convertible,” in Lambo-speak) is for the see-and-be-seen crowd. Lamborghini considers the Spyder its “lifestyle” model, as powerful as the LP610-4 coupe, albeit a touch less quick on account of its 265 extra pounds of folding roof and rollover protection components. And by “a touch,” we mean only a touch: 0–100 km/h (62 mph) takes a scant 3.4 seconds, according to Lamborghini, just 0.2 seconds longer than the

112

Advantage Spyder: • Better to see out of • Better to be seen in • Most comfortable ride

hardtop. And hold on to your hair plugs, gentlemen: Lamborghini says the Spyder matches the coupe’s 201-mph top speed with the top down. As a convertible, the Spyder is probably the best Huracán for Florida’s rather more casual driving environments. The suspension is slightly softer, and lowering the fully insulated soft top, which takes 17 seconds and can be performed at speeds up to 31 mph, puts all of Florida’s scenery in clear view, from palm trees to glassy high-rises to the shining sun. A word of warning: this is a highly visible automobile, and going topless in such a car will yield much attention from passersby and fellow motorists. If you’re an extrovert, this may be exactly what you’re looking for, and it’s always fun to let fellow car enthusiasts get an up-close look at the Spyder at gas stations, restaurants, etc., especially if it’s their first time getting close to a Lamborghini. If you’re not an extrovert, well, consider the Huracán coupe. Or better yet, a Bentley. Not surprisingly, the Huracán Spyder is considerably pricier than both the LP580-2 and LP610-4 coupes, and it’s not hard to push the Spyder’s price well above $300K once you open Lamborghini’s vast “Ad Personum” customization catalog. We do expect a Spyder version of the LP580-2 to appear within a year or so, but that car will still likely cost around a quarter million to start. No one ever said looking this good would come cheap.

Brian FREED AND

This month, Wendi Sugarman Bieber hangs with the guys behind the hospitality brand 3-J, which encompasses Revolution Live, America’s Backyard, Stache 1920’s Drinking Den and the upcoming CWS in Lake Worth. Photographs by Aaron Lurie So, back in the ‘90s, there are two guys, Chicago native Jeff John and Pittsburgh native Brian Freed, who met in college and became close friends sharing their love of food, drink, music and having a great time. Did you ever think those years would be the pre-cursor to a successful future as business partners in the cool and edgy Hospitality brand 3-J? After opening Revolution Live and seeing its success and growth, it was a given and a frequent conversation of ours that he would be the ideal partner to assist in growing the 3-J brand. Brian had success and a great background and interest in the areas of art, and extensive training in the craft cocktail industry. We shared the same vision of unique and cutting-edge concepts, and our focus was driven by the obligation to getting back to community and supporting charities, foundation work, local interests, talents, municipalities, businesses throughout the tri-county as well as with tourists. There was something bound to happen in the future. Jeff, you opened up the establishment Revolution Live. Let’s start with the name you chose and the concept of it. The Revolution of Music was coming. Live Nation had been our partners since day one. I looked at it as an opportunity to hit upon the industrial revolution of music bringing together artists and people; alliances with local municipalities and Convention & Visitors Bureau, while still understanding I needed to turn an eyesore of a property into a venue hosting the hottest of bands appealing to all different ages and genres of music, as well as finding and providing local talent the ability to showcase their talents and following. This property is a venue like no other. A 100-year-old building with no sight-line obstructions and top-ofthe-line sound and light.

126

APRIL 2016

Jeff John, Wendi, and Brian Freed.

Throw out some names of the bands you’ve brought through the doors of Revolution Live. Kings of Leon, Lady Gaga, Smashing Pumpkins, Katy Perry, John Legend, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Arctic Monkeys, Chris Cornell, Panic at the Disco.... Florida is actually a tough place for bands to tour because of how spread out the state is and the time and financial investment needed to hit all the main areas. We bring 100-plus bands a year here, blowing their fans away, bringing in locals, tourists, while supporting the interests of our community as well.

Speaking of the talent that has entered the doors, let’s discuss the talent you commissioned to actually create the interior decor of Revolution Live. You commissioned someone who is now so famous, the Smithsonian has his work as a part of its permanent collection. I commissioned Shepard Fairey, one of the most famous street artists known for his OBEY brand, to develop our logo and the live installations within Revolution Live in 2004. At that point it was his largest of installations. It seems that Revolution Live also was probably the most notable extra in the movie Rock of Ages. The story is pretty unbelievable. Yes, it is an amazing story. Director Adam

Shankman held a focus group in Los Angeles. At the end of the focus group, a girl approached him and says, “Whatever you do, you need to go to Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale.” Turns out that girl was Hayley Williams, the lead singer of Paramore, who had performed at Revolution. We ended up closing for almost five weeks while they filmed Rock of Ages at Revolution Live in June 2010. I did some reading on this and found out something that I believe says a lot about you, your loyalty towards your staff and what seems to be the core of the 3-J brand in its business: your request to New Line Cinema. Well, I was concerned for the employees that would be affected by Revolution Live being shut down for filming. I made sure to negotiate that my staff would be taken care of, and if they wanted to, they would have the opportunity to be in the movie. The All-American Backyard seems like it appeals to so many and was conceptualized to provide something for everyone in a real kick-back, old school way. Talk about it. The All-American Backyard is a fun concept

where the staff interacts with the customers in a vibrant and safe environment. Where else in the world can you be on a 15,000-square-foot outdoor patio? If you want an in-depth look, just Google or YouTube 4 a.m. showers at America’s Backyard. That for sure will provide a visual description. Stache 1920’s Drinking Den: I ventured on my own a few nights before I met up with you guys to get a sense and feel for this unique concept of a venue. I wanted to experience the vibe of a concept I was not familiar with. Frankly, I was enamored by the feel, sounds and visuals of this eclectic place. Stache is the real deal. It’s all about the Prohibition Days. There is nothing out there like it. We have bridged the finest of the old and new, providing an environment that pleases the pickiest of spirit connoisseurs, as well as investing in our own single barrels. We hand picked Buffalo Trace, a 4-year signature old-fashioned bourbon. Our Old Weller Antique, a 9-year, one-of a-kind barrel, was handpicked by Harlan Wheatley himself. It’s the real deal for the Bourbon Aficionado. We’ve invested a lot to learn about the cocktail industry by hir-

ing top people in the industry for Master Distillers to train. Given that Dale DeGroff, the master talent of the legendary Rainbow Room, who was known to be the pioneer of the gourmet approach to “recreating the classic cocktail”, this seems to be the perfect segue into hearing about your next upcoming venture: CWS. CWS is a casual but sophisticated Craft Cocktail Bar and Kitchen opening in spring 2016 in Lake Worth. From the cocktails to the food and the vibe, it’s one of those places you are going to have to experience. This will be the place for craft cocktail enthusiasts and foodies alike. Give me your response to the following phrases: PROUDEST OF SUCCESS OF REVOLUTION BECAUSE... “It’s still rolling and

growing after 10+ years.”

MOST BLOWN AWAY BY STACHE’S...

“The opportunity of what can be done with the concept.” MOST EXCITED BY THE POTENTIAL OF CWS TO... “Be the platform for growth/
