WHOLE LOTTA
Whole Foods’ Instacart service helps busy people stay on point nutritionally.
42
APRIL 2017
Short on time and desperate to stick to your healthy eating routine? Thank Whole Foods for coming to the rescue. Their Instacart service allows customers to order groceries online by connecting them with personal shoppers who hand-pick items at customers’ local favorite stores and deliver straight to their doors. How it works: Customers go to www.delivery.wholefoodsmarket.com or open the Instacart mobile app on their iPhone or Android device, select their city and store, add items to a virtual cart, and then choose a delivery window (within one hour, within two hours or up to seven days in advance) and check out. An Instacart Personal Shopper accepts the order on his or her smartphone, uses the Instacart Shopper app to do the shopping, and then delivers the order to the customer in the designated delivery timeframe. Launched in San Francisco in 2012, Instacart has quickly scaled to 35 metropolitan areas across the U.S. and is available in major markets where Whole Foods Market is located. Bonus: the first delivery is free. Visit www.delivery.wholefoodsmarket.com.

YOGA & YOLKS
DETOX/RETOX
ACTIVE TUESDAYS
There’s no better way to relax your mind and body than holding a pose while gazing at the calming Intracoastal. That’s why Shooters Waterfront hosts “Yoga & Yolks” every Saturday, a free, one-hour yoga session on their waterfront lawn that’s led by Taryn Allen of Fort Lauderdale’s Barkan Method Studio. After the final pose, yogis can treat themselves to a healthy, all-you-can-eat brunch buffet ($34), along with bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys ($20). Reservations are required. Shooters Waterfront, 3033 N.E. 32nd Ave., Fort Lauderdale | 954-566-2855 | www.shooterswaterfront.com
At Tap 42’s quarterly “Detox/Retox” brunch, guests can detox with a fitness class led by local yogis or instructors from studios like CycleBar and Flywheel, then retox with a boozy brunch on the patio that features an array of Tap’s favorite menu items along with bottomless mimosas, Bloody Marys and Funky Buddha beer. It’s also a chance to burn calories for a good cause: classes are $10 and proceeds benefit local charities like Women in Distress, Humane Society, Foster and Adoptive Parent Association and more. Check-in starts at 9:30 a.m. and brunch begins at 11 a.m. The next Detox/Retox brunch is set for April 15th. Tap 42, 1411 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale | 954-566-2855 | www.tap42.com
The garden at Rhythm & Vine in Fort Lauderdale is known for its chill, party vibe, but every Tuesday night during the month of April, the garden transforms into a workout arena for their new Active Tuesdays. Expect a killer workout with some of South Florida’s favorite fitness instructors from CycleBar, Orange Theory, The Yoga Joint and more. After class, guests can shop a pop-up market that features fitness and wellness products as well as local organic food vendors. The ticket price ($20) includes entry to the class and market, plus passes to the featured instructor’s gym. Rhythm & Vine, 401 N.E. 5th Terrace, Fort Lauderdale | 954-533-3734 | www.rhythm-vine.com
all well & good Lauren Loparo will meet you at the beach for a life-changing Thai massage.
Rachel Loren Bolber works her micro-needling magic in the comfort of your home.
MICRO-MANAGE YOUR SKIN
try thai
Want something totally different from the standard Swedish or deep-tissue rubdowns? Try Thai. I recently sampled Thai massage, which has been around for more than 2,000 years, and my world was blissfully changed. Unlike traditional massages performed on a table, you’ll lie on a thick, comfy mat while fully clothed in yoga or workout clothes. During my massage, Lauren Loparo from Expand Thai Massage used her arms, feet and knees to pull and stretch my tight muscles (think of it as a yoga session where someone else is doing all the work for you) and also applied acupressure along the body’s energy lines. “Acupressure is like acupuncture, but with fingers instead of needles,” explains Loparo. “It helps with circulation, joint mobility and relieving muscle tension.” In addition to her Oakland Park studio, Loparo will come to your house or find a stunning beachside location to do the body work. Prices start at $120 for 90 minutes; $180 for in-home massage. Expand Thai Massage, 1427 E. Commercial Blvd., Oakland Park | 754-212-7769 | www.expandthaimassage.com
If you’re looking to turn back time— without going to a dermatologist’s office—now you can receive one of the top skin-care treatments to help do just that, and in the comfort of your home. Rachel Loren Bolber, a medical aesthetician who is master-certified in micro-needling, recently launched the at-home service MicroMe to cater to clients’ busy schedules. During the micro-needling procedure, Bolber uses an electric pen with fine needles to deliver tiny punctures to the skin. This “skin injury” causes the body to trigger natural healing processes, stimulating coveted collagen and elastin production for improved skin texture and firmness along with reduction of wrinkles. It even works on acne scars and stretch marks. So, does it hurt? “Micro-needling feels like sandpaper exfoliating the skin. It’s extremely tolerable and comfortable,” says Bolber, who also points out that patients can expect some redness after the treatment, which subsides after a few hours. Results can be seen in one to three sessions and the price is $200 per session. www.micromemiami.com
NO PAIN, LOTS OF GAIN We always need to be beach-ready in South Florida, but for many women, that often means enduring the dreaded discomfort of waxing. Catherine Lebreton, owner of Uni K Wax in Weston and Miramar, says women can make their waxing sessions less painful by properly preparing their skin. “You want to make sure the skin has been exfoliated and that you’ve removed all the dead skin cells two days before your service,” she advises. “Also, hair is easily removed from hydrated skin, so drinking lots of water to hydrate from the inside out and applying a moisturizer to the area the day before your service will help.” Lebreton also suggests avoiding alcohol before a wax because it tightens pores, and a tight pore holds onto the hair follicle. Last tip: Apply a cold pack to the skin after the wax session to quickly close pores. Lori Scott PRESIDENT & OWNER
Yoga Factory & Fitness Inc. In what ways does yoga help get us into shape that working out in a gym doing tough cardio and weight-bearing exercise doesn’t? It’s a simple answer. Yoga feeds the soul! Although working out with weights has many positive effects, such as building stronger bones and strengthening and toning the body, there’s an overall magic after every yoga class that fulfills me on every level mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. You don’t get that from lifting a weight. Yoga is the answer for an overall mind-and-body experience that tones you, builds muscle, releases stress, detoxifies, improves posture, burns calories, prevents injuries, quiets the mind, relieves stress, lessens chronic pain, helps heal arthritis and headaches, lowers blood pressure, reduces insomnia, improves balance and focus, increases flexibility and blood flow, boosts your immunity—well, you get the point now. What do you say to those who have always wanted to give it a try, but feel nervous about it because they are physically inflexible or clumsy? New yogis are my favorite! We take pride at Yoga Factory in welcoming all new students. Our studio is very mainstream with tons of “newbies” walking in the door, and as you can imagine we have heard every excuse under the sun as to why they have not done it yet. I just smile and say, “We have all been there.” I remind them that they are coming into yoga to make a change and walking through the door is half the battle. We all have visions and goals as to where we would like to be; just take it one day at a time. Are nutritional habits important to maximizing the benefits of yoga? Just like I tell my kids in class, your body is like a car—if you don’t fuel it properly, you won’t get very far. What you put in your body is extremely important. Eighty percent of how you will look and feel is what you eat is and exercise is the icing on the cake. Do both and you will always be one step ahead. They are the key ingredients to being the best versions of ourselves we can be. What is the healthy motto you live by? Do yoga! It makes everything better.

Dr. Tamy Faierman PLASTIC SURGEON
Reshape Your Image What are some of the latest and greatest procedures you offer to help us “refresh” for spring? Injectables (Botox/Dysport and fillers) are a fantastic way to refresh. Sometimes it even just takes a small amount with precision placement and that can make a world of difference. Lasers such as Infini Rx provide improved texture, reduced acne scarring and tightens the skin by stimulating collagen production. These treatments along with a regimented daily skincare routine with occasional peels can make a drastic difference in your overall look. What would you say to someone who has been thinking for a long time about a procedure but is afraid to take the leap? I often have patients that feel this way. I like to remind them that if they have been thinking about a procedure for a while then it is clearly a priority in their subconscious and conscious mind. It is important to remember that body, emotion and mind are all connected. Aligning our outer body often helps reconnect us to ourselves. What’s different about what you offer in terms of not just procedures but support and service to patients? In my medical practice, my overall philosophy is to treat patients holistically and help them achieve optimal wellness. It really just stems from my thinking that we should not treat everything with just medicine or medical procedures and that we can incorporate complementary, holistic and integrative approaches at the same time. Therefore, we offer holistic care by addressing a patient’s overall need, which can include acupuncture, postoperative massages, facials and skin care, nutritional support, hormonal support, a personal trainer and other modalities that support overall healing, health and well-being. Do good nutrition and exercise go along with making plastic surgery successful in the long run? Nutrition and exercise are imperative to sustaining excellent long-term surgical results as well as overall longevity along with a healthy lifestyle. These go hand-in-hand. My recommendation is to begin to undergo a change into a healthier lifestyle as soon as one has the intention, preferably pre operatively. What is the healthy motto you live by? Reclaim your body and yourself!

Dr. Brandon J. Hochman, DC CHIROPRACTOR
Med Plus Centers What do you say to those of us who feel stiffness or pain and are afraid to start an exercise routine because of potential injuries? Exercise is extremely important not only for the musculoskeletal system, but has major benefits for all the systems of the body. The problem we’ve found is that so many people follow the mantra of “no pain, no gain” that their exercise routines become more hazardous to the body. At our offices, our patients receive a combination of the latest in physical rehabilitation and transitional training—a bridge to more advanced workouts. We help determine the safe zone and ranges of motion for our patients to exercise in safely and still make positive gains. Tell our readers about some of your specializations, such as Muscle Activation Techniques. Muscle Activation Techniques was founded by a brilliant man named Greg Roskopf. The principle behind it is that the communication from the brain to the muscles can become inhibited over time due to stress, trauma or overuse. As the muscles reduce the amount of work they can do, other muscles responsible for similar movements become overworked, causing inflammation, pain and dysfunction. The technique is designed to activate those inhibited muscles to work more efficiently and allow for the taxed muscles to work less strenuously, reducing pain and creating a more stable a smoother movement. This past year, I have implemented AFNI (American Functional Neurology Institute) protocols into the office. With the help of these principles we have been able to get some incredible results, especially for patients with chronic knee issues. We’ve seen patients with pain for 20 years, relying on pills and injections, contemplating surgery, improve their function drastically. Not everyone is a candidate for our treatment, but those that are have been very happy. It seems back pain is one of the most common ailments people have, of all ages. Is most of it able to be addressed without having to be on meds constantly or worse, undergo surgery? I think so, of course. Back pain is very common, but the frequency and levels of pain people experience can certainly be mitigated with proper spinal maintenance. Once a patient achieves optimal results from treatment for an acute issue, we recommend visiting us once every 4-6 weeks for a tune-up. We find that if patients follow our maintenance protocols they rarely have back flare-ups, and if they do it’s infinitely more manageable. Medications should be used to reduce pain during the acute stages, while therapy returns the body to proper functioning. Surgery should obviously always be the last resort if all else fails. What’s the healthy motto you live by personally? The body needs balance. Eat healthy, but it’s ok to indulge once in a while. Exercise is important, but listen to your body; it may need rest. Work hard, achieve your goals, but make time for enjoyment.

Gavin De Souza HEAD PERSONAL TRAINER
BB3 Fitness & Nutrition Center What’s the first thing we need to do to psych ourselves up to get into shape? The first thing you need to do is take some time to find clarity with what result you want to achieve, know why you want to achieve that result, create a plan of how to get there working backwards from the result(s) you want, and then take massive action. Knowing your “why,” that deep-down feeling in your gut, is super important, as this is what is going to psych you up each and every day to get up and attack the day with purpose, and as a result make your journey a little less daunting. What are some tips for getting and staying motivated? • Have a workout partner • Be part of an accountability group •F ocus on making small, habit-based changes every 1-3 weeks • Celebrate small victories • I f you are not measuring, you are guessing, so measure your progress no matter how small. Seeing progress is massive motivation to keep going • I nstead of asking, “Why is this so hard?” ask “What can I do to make this more fun?” Are nutrition and exercise of equal importance? One is just as important as the other and they work hand in hand. You cannot out-train a bad diet, as they say. From a health and wellness perspective you need to find that balance between the two, as they complement each other. What are the advantages of working with a personal trainer? Your personal trainer should be like your coach, guiding you to the result(s) you want to achieve. Your trainer will hold you accountable for your actions, challenge you to get the best out of yourself, be supportive and empathetic to your situation and what level you are at with your nutrition and exercise, ask precise questions to make you think to overcome any challenges that arise, lift you up when you are down, celebrate victories with you and challenge you to step out of your comfort zone to do things you thought you could not do. The stars have trainers, so why shouldn’t you? What is the healthy motto you live by? Live like a lion!

NeuroSport Elite, PC
What would you say to someone who has been thinking for a long time about getting into shape but just can’t seem to make the leap? The absolute most important thing one must ask is “Why?” Why change your lifestyle? Why change the foods you love to eat? Why waste your time in the gym or running the streets? Why cause yourself so much pain? I can teach someone every single thing there is to get into the best shape and health of their life, but it would be a big fat waste of time until I uncover the deep-seated and heartfelt reason why someone would be motivated to engage in the struggles of becoming healthy. It takes dedication and commitment on a consistent basis. How can we break old habits and mindsets and get motivated? There is no one way of doing this. Everyone is wired differently, so here are a couple of triggers that may ignite your own personal fire: •W rite your new habit down and post it up around the home (keep it positive). •T ell friends! Announcing this to non-judgmental people in your life will help you stay accountable for this new action step. •K eep a log book of your intention every day. Small increments (baby steps) of improvement will amount to scaling the mountain. •C reate a storyboard of only photos of your goal. The new bikini or bathing suit. The new look you desire. Completing the marathon, the competition, being awarded the trophy. • Set small, hourly or daily goals. NeuroSport Elite seems to address all aspects of fitness, from nutrition to mental optimization to pain-free physical fitness. How did the concept come about? Having spent 20+ years as the official chiropractor to the Dolphins, Marlins, Panthers and major league baseball teams from around the country, I was witness to the best healthcare strategies in the world. For every minute, hour or day that a superstar athlete is unable to play, it costs a team hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in lost revenue. Watching bone, muscle, tendon and ligament heal faster than what we are traditionally used to seeing became my mission to bring to the public. It was time to bring together the tenets of what health is all about: a balance of optimum physical, nutritional and mental strategies for the average, active human. It was what brings excitement to my every single workday— how can I treat the next person like a pro athlete? What’s the healthy motto you live by personally? I don’t quite have a motto. I live with excitement!

Eli Sapharti MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER
Author, From Fat Boy to Fit Man How would you advise a person who is desperate to get into shape to start what often seems like it’s going to be a daunting task? The very first thing I would tell a person desperate to get into shape is to stop or reduce their desperation. When we do things out of desperation, we end up having false expectations that lead us to ultimately losing faith in the process and quitting all together. Ultimate success comes from doing something toward your goals everyday consistently. What are three major things that sabotage our efforts to lose weight and get in shape? Setting goals that are unrealistic to gain short- term gratification. (For example, setting a goal of losing “X” amount of weight in “X” amount of time.) Making excuses to ourselves. For example, excuses about why we can’t exercise today or why we “deserve” that piece of cake or slice of pizza. What we must work on in order to successfully lose weight and get in shape is to start being honest with ourselves and call ourselves out. And expecting to go from 0-100 overnight. In order to succeed at maintaining any exercise routine you have to slowly build up to it by creating a commitment of maybe 15 minutes per day and build up from there every few weeks or even every couple of months. Do you find nutrition and exercise to be of equal importance? This question has several right answers, depending on each individual’s goals and where they are starting from. For instance, someone who is 100 pounds overweight can make very small changes to their nutrition, such as not drinking sugared soft drinks or juices, and they may see immediate weight loss although they continue eating burgers, fries, pizza and desserts. Someone in better shape and with only a few pounds to lose must make much stricter changes in order to see the same results. Regular exercise will help speed up the process and in turn also help get the body healthier and fitter. What is the healthy motto you live by? As you will tell by the title of my book From Fat Boy to Fit Man: A One Step at a Time Story of Success, the motto I live by in terms of health and life in general is “one step at a time”. This motto is more than mere words to me. Not only do I live by them daily, but I do my best to instill them in others as a way of life for sustainable weight-loss and fitness goals.

In the last few years, Broward County has seen an explosion of healthy eateries, all thanks to restaurant owners who’ve either
used food to heal their bodies or who just want to offer a fresh, good-for-you perspective on eating. Whether you’re on the extreme “green” team or simply trying to clean up your diet, here are seven healthy dining choices.

MY ORGANIC CORNER
127 Weston Road, Weston | 954.888.4700 | www.myorganiccorner.com
Run by a husband-wife team, the heart of this restaurant goes much deeper than just serving healthy food. Five years ago, Janeth Roldan decided to open My Organic Corner to help others after she witnessed the power of a vegan diet. Roldan had been extremely sick for years, and she believes going vegan helped her body heal. “I feel like I’m fulfilling a mission that God has given me after my sickness,” says Roldan. “It goes beyond just feeding you. I’ll sit with you and help you learn about healing foods.” Some of the menu favorites are a Lentil & Beet Burger served with avocado for a protein- and iron-packed combo; and their Baked Falafel Wrap, a healthy twist on fried falafel with generous amounts of soft, baked chickpeas served with hummus. Although the menu is mainly vegan, the couple did add a tuna dish for non-vegans, which Roldan says has really taken off. “It’s a sweet potato stuffed with our wild-caught tongol for a salty and sweet combination. The best part is that this dish has encouraged people who were afraid of eating vegan to try other things on our menu.” Roldan even brings in a holistic doctor each week for a free, 20-minute consultation with customers, and often allows customers to offer up some of their own personal recipes. inWESTON MAGAZINE

When it comes to healthy living, this place is the real deal. Everything on the menu is raw vegan (which means it’s uncooked or unprocessed), organic and gluten-free, except for a daily hot soup that’s made of veggies or beans. Owner Raoul Valle opened his restaurant nine years ago, after he says he beat prostate cancer and other ailments thanks to a plant-based diet. “It’s all about giving your immune system the right fuel,” says Valle. Everything on the menu “mimics” dishes most of us are used to seeing on mainstream menus, like cheeseburgers or lasagna, but swaps meat for plant-based ingredients along with nuts, seeds, and fresh or dried organic herbs. Valle says some of the most popular dishes are the Coconut Curry Falafel Wild Rice, made of rice that’s been soaked instead of cooked, and dehydrated hummus instead of fried chickpeas; and the Lasagna, which is composed of zucchini, homemade marinara sauce and “ricotta” (blanched almonds). “I have some Italian customers that come in and say it’s the best they’ve ever had,” says Valle. A real treat—ask for a Young Thai coconut to sip. “It’s probably the purest water on earth and it’s loaded with minerals.”

GREEN BAR & KITCHEN
1075 S.E. 17th Street, Fort Lauderdale | 954.533.7507 | www.greenbarkitchen.com Elena Pezzo and Charlie Grippo set out to make healthy eating “cool,” and they’ve done just that with their bustling, fast-casual Fort Lauderdale restaurant. The couple’s nutritious mission began after Pezzo helped her brother, who was on his deathbed after a life-threatening brain injury, recover with juicing and powerful fish oils. “I made a promise to God that if he would bring my brother back, I would teach people about nutrition,” recalls Pezzo, whose brother is now fully recovered. Everything on Green Bar’s menu is plant-based, and while there are superfoodpacked salads, cold-pressed juices and smoothies, many of the dishes are considered “vegan comfort food.” Grippo, who’s behind the creative and ever-changing menu, says the number-one seller is the delicious Coconut Burger, with textured veggie protein that’s flash-fried in toasted coconut flakes and topped with mango salsa, lettuce and tomato, and the Mushroom Steak Sandwich, which showcases mushrooms that have been hickory-smoked for three hours and sit on a bed of slaw, horseradish and Worcestershire sauce. Grippo made a resolution of “no waste” in 2017 (after seeing the kitchen throw out tons of organic product) and recently came up with the idea for hushpuppies, which uses the beet pulp from their popular beet juice along with carrots, apple and flax. GBK’s busiest day is Sunday, when brunch means an array of healthy choices like their coveted gluten-free Chia Pancakes. And, good news for those who love ice cream but can’t stomach dairy: they’re now serving CocoWhip, a coconut-based cool treat containing only six grams of cane sugar.

MYAPAPAYA JUICERY + KITCHEN 1040 Bayview Drive, Fort Lauderdale | 954.338.5651 | 954.338.5651 | www.myapapaya.com More than four years ago, former private chef Adam Kanner jumpstarted Broward’s heath craze when he opened Myapapaya (which, sweetly, is named after his daughter Mya) because he wanted to create a restaurant that served real, whole foods. His goal: To make healthy food for everyone, from meat lovers to vegetarians. “This place is for anyone who’s concerned about what they’re putting into their body. Everything we serve has an identity, so you know where it’s coming from. Meat from a farm in Pennsylvania, only wild-caught fish, and only antibiotic-free chicken,” says Kanner. And it’s not just the ingredients that are transparent—the open-air kitchen allows customers to see their food as it’s being prepared. The menu is expansive, with customer favorites like the Whole Grain Bowl with black rice, brown rice, quinoa, tons of veggies, amino acids and coconut oil; a grass-fed Bison Burger that comes with the side of the day; and the filling Sweet Potato Power, a huge baked sweet potato topped with grilled chicken, kale, black beans, avocado and different seeds. There’s always a daily special and Myapapaya also serves one of the few hot organic breakfasts in town. Not someone who can stomach green juices that are reminiscent of grazing in a pasture? Fresh Fusion is a good place to begin your cleaneating path. “We are for the transitional palate,” says owner Kay Finch, who opened the Davie restaurant one year ago. “This is for the people who want to eat clean but are not ready for the extreme green route. We want to offer dishes that will keep people coming back and not deter them from eating better.” The restaurant is centered around fresh, organic foods—Finch started following an organic diet after she noticed that her daughter was over-developed for her age. “We were making a lot of bad food decisions. I started to read more and I realized it was the foods we were eating,” she explains. The restaurant offers breakfast and lunch, serving up dishes like the Skinny Greek, an egg-white omelet with sautéed spinach, onions, tomatoes and purple cabbage; Banana Crunch Pancakes, gluten-free pancakes with granola, caramelized bananas and pure maple syrup; and Sweet Potato Kale Hash, composed of diced sweet potatoes, kale, green and yellow peppers, and smoked paprika, paired with two fried eggs. While the restaurant does serve juices, two drinks that you probably won’t find anywhere else are the Golden Milk, a traditional Indian drink made of coconut milk, turmeric, ginger and honey; and the Ginger Turmeric Latte, which is built just like a latte, but with turmeric, ginger, your milk of choice, coconut oil and black pepper—a smart swap for coffee.
Think of this Fort Lauderdale hotspot as your healthy-ish splurge when you want a nice dinner out. Siblings Aaron and Kirsta Grauberger, who are both sommeliers, opened the restaurant more than six years ago to emulate the farmto-table wine country cuisine found in Sonoma and Napa Valley. Chef Lauren DeShields is the creative mind behind the eclectic menu that is literally printed every day based on farmers’ availability and what’s in season. “Everything is made from scratch. Our produce is organic, our proteins are free-range and antibiotic-free, and we only use Florida fish or wild, line-caught fish,” says Aaron, who also admits the kitchen doesn’t shy away from butter, cream and salt. Some of his healthy picks are the Ceviche chock full of the fish of the day, veggies and a citrus marinade; Grass-fed Beef Tartare; and vegetarian options like Almond & Herb Chickpea Falafel with sweet baby peppers, roasted golden beets, grilled okra and eggplant pudding. For those who count calories, there are tasting options available, which means you get a half-size entrée portion. Our healthy tip: opt for their wholesome daily Happy Hour from 5-7, when all appetizers are half off. Now that you’re eating healthier, you can indulge in a guilt-free glass of vino selected from their extensive wine list, which features around 500 bottles.

This is not fake news: You can throw a delicious, health-conscious event that your friends will rave about for days. Chef Amber Antonelli of The Naked Bite will cater your next event or show you how to up your culinary prowess during a fun cooking party. “Vegetables will always be the star of the show,” says Antonelli, who’s been in the restaurant industry for more than 15 years and started her plant-based company after she returned to United States from living in Thailand and Peru. During a private class, she’ll come to your kitchen and teach four recipes of your choice, or you can host a cooking party, during which the chef will demonstrate how to make the dishes while you simply relax and enjoy. “I love Thai food and I do a Pad Thai with rice, zucchini or kelp noodles and make veggies the highlight of the plate. I bulk up the dish with quinoa,” she explains. Antonelli also enjoys showing people how to swap cream and butter for dairy-free options like coconut milk or cashew-based sauces, and she’ll show you how to make sweet treats with dates, maple syrup, almond and coconut flour.

Find yours and enjoy the full Jamaican luxury experience at Montego Bay’s Half Moon Resort. By Bob Curley

W When Prince Harry coincidentally visited Jamaica for a friend’s wedding at the same time I was staying at Montego Bay’s Half Moon resort in March, I half-expected to round a corner and find His Highness canoodling with girlfriend Meghan Markle. It’s that kind of place. Alas, the couple chose a different locale for their “Jamaican love nest” (as breathlessly reported by the British tabloids) this time around, but a royal visit to this iconic MoBay resort would have been nothing unusual. Appropriately, the prince stayed in one of Half Moon’s posh Royal Suites when he toured Jamaica in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, and a quick scan of the photos in the hotel lobby reveals a black-and-white snap of his father, Prince Charles, touring the grounds as a young man. The Queen herself has also stayed here, as did the Kennedys and a long list of other luminaries. That’s a long way of saying that Half Moon is a pretty exclusive resort: in fact, the hotel has set the standard for Jamaican luxury for more than 60 years, and shows no signs of letting its crown slip. Yet despite the tony pedigree, Half Moon manages to succeed where so many other Jamaican resorts—especially

a ll-inclusives—fail: making guests feel like they’re part of the local community. Spread across more than 400 acres of oceanfront a few miles east of downtown Montego Bay, Half Moon certainly is a big enough place to disappear into if you’re a pap-dodging prince or celebrity. On-property activities are diverse and uniformly excellent, and restaurant options include bayside dining under seagrape trees sparkling with lights and one of Jamaica’s best fine-dining restaurants, built in and around a historic sugar mill. You can begin your day at Sunrise Beach and end it over cocktails at Sunset Beach. And of course the resort’s signature whitewashed suites and villas, most located oceanfront, are temptation enough to simply hang around your own private pool and soak up the sun all day long. Yet Half Moon is blessedly devoted to its sense of place, from simple stuff like featuring local treats like bammy and festivals on its restaurant menus to showcasing mento, Jamaica’s traditional country folk music, at the Sunset Bar cocktail hour rather than just defaulting to more tourist-friendly reggae bands. Even the jerk chicken, pork, and sausage served at Moonchie’s on Sunset Beach and the weekly barbecue at Sunrise Beach are sufficiently spicy to satisfy locals. Half Moon’s off-property tours also highlight excursions to coffee plantations in the Blue Mountains, Jamaica’s rugged backcountry, and a culinary adventure to Stush in the Bush, an organic farm where you can enjoy a Rastafarian-style vegetarian dinner prepared with locally sourced produce, much of it grown by hosts Lisa and Christopher Binns at Zionite Farm. Couples who marry at Half Moon are gently encouraged to give back to Jamaica via the Half Moon Foundation, an extension of the resort’s founding principles “to respect and contribute to the welfare of the community while offering discerning travelers the opportunity for remarkable vacation memories.”

One of Jamaica’s best jerk restaurants, Scotchies, is within walking distance of Half Moon, while another, the Pork Pit, is a must-do when visiting downtown Montego Bay. The nightlife at the resort is pretty lowkey, so if you crave some late-night excitement take a cab into town and cruise MoBay’s Hip Strip, a string of waterfront bars and nightclubs that includes Margaritaville, the Jamaican Bobsled Cafe, and Pier 1. To explore further, take the wheel of a spry Mini Cooper for a coastal tour with Island Routes to Ocho Rios or Negril, with stops for food and fun along the way. Many of the Half Moon’s 800 employees live right on property, so you’re constantly greeted with friendly waves whenever you’re riding the resort’s signature powder-blue bicycles from place to place. The ideal form of transportation at a place this big and flat, bikes are equipped with big baskets for your beach towels and water bottles. At a resort that enforces a dress code of long trousers and collared shirts even at lunch on the Seagrape Terrace, the bikes are refreshingly egalitarian: it’s hard to look stuffy while you’re pedaling around on a single-speed beach cruiser. Bicycling is just a warmup to Half Moon’s many fitness options: among the resort’s 50-plus (!) swimming pools is an Olympic-sized lap pool, and the spacious, modern gym is equipped with a LifeFitness circuit, treadmills, spin bikes, and a studio offering yoga and pilates. The adjoining tennis center is one of the best in the Caribbean, and Half Moon’s sheer size makes it easy to run a morning 5K without ever straying off the grounds. And the golf is legendary: 18 holes designed

by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., right across the street, plus the equally acclaimed White Witch and Cinnamon Hill courses just down the road. The best activity at Half Moon, however, involves trading two legs for four and joining one of the resort’s daily Surf & Turf horseback rides. If a trot along the beach sounds tame to you, be forewarned: this is as much a swim with the horses as a ride. Half Moon has the only full-fledged resort equestrian center in Jamaica, with more than two dozen resident horses (many retired thoroughbreds from Jamaica’s racetracks), and the ride begins with a warmup in the show ring before you head to Sunrise Beach. Entering the surf bareback, you’ll soon discover that a wet horse is a slippery horse: riders are almost guaranteed to fall off once you reach deeper water. By that point, however, your former mount will actually be swimming (they can horsie-paddle up to a mile with ease), and your job is simply to grab a tail and enjoy the ride back into shore. It’s thrilling, silly fun. The resort’s Fern Tree Spa is an oasis unto itself: entering the spa grounds is like passing into a private estate, which it indeed once was. Lush tropical greenery hugs a warren of treatment rooms, steam room and sauna, outdoor waterfall pools, a yoga pavilion and a labyrinth. The Couples Fern Tree Signature Massage, which for us began with a gentle foot bath and ended with a plunge into a heated waterfall lagoon pool, is heavenly healing for two — truly the royal treatment at a resort that still reigns supreme for sophisticated Jamaican luxury.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% Farah Tejpar, MD over the past Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health Specialist decade. In 2016, it was estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, sports health specialist, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.
Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons. Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.
Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Tejpar or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health specialist, call 866.287.2963 or visit us online at clevelandclinicflorida.org/sportshealth.

Made with Absolut Elyx vodka, Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut, aperol, hibiscus and rose water, the equally refreshing and romantic elixir is symbolic of its surroundings, a much-heralded contemporary Argentine asado (outdoor grill) restaurant by one of the world’s foremost chefs who has brought a level of sophistication, glamour and approachable cuisine to South Beach in surroundings that transport diners to London or Paris, or the era of the Great Gatsby. In a word, it is magical. This level of refinement is rare in South Beach, well known as a bastion of glitter and excess. Enter Faena, with its grand murals, chandeliers and intimate lobby, and stroll down a grand villa-style hallway past the opulent Living Room bar to Los Fuegos, which could hold its own in any international capital. The crowd is varied: young, old, dressed up or down in $600 Italian t-shirts, for glamour and grace speak the same language. On any given evening, and especially weekends, the hum of convivial conversation and a bustling staff of 60 attentive and well-trained staff pulsate through the grand salon, yet nothing can be overheard, which makes for privacy amidst the 85 tables indoors and 100 seats on a lush garden patio. the same reds and golds that infuse the restaurant with its comfortable elegance. Background music is unobtrusive, and when it can be heard, might be Gerry Rafferty assuring you, “It’s been you, woman, right down the line.” Red chairs, glossed wood tables and gold accents are punctuated by leopard-print banquettes, and with it all having been custom-designed by Frank Pollaro, it more than works. It is said the grand chandelier is electronically linked to Los Fuegos in Buenos Aires and flickers when there is lightning in Argentina’s capital city. The décor is a work of art that prepares the palate for what’s in store from Chef Mallmann’s custom-designed kitchen and grand wood oven “piano” that are the first of their kind in an urban environment and allow the renowned Argentine chef to meld his fire-cooking techniques into one over-thetop culinary atelier. Every dish is crafted by the extraordinarily talented Chef de Cuisine Cristian Menendez, at 27 a handplucked Argentinian prodigy of Mallmann’s for the past six years. Mallmann, who is at his South Beach outpost at least once a month (each time arriving with a suitcase of steak knives that were handmade in his native Patagonia), molded a naturally gifted chef with the nuances of his craft, helming an impressive (and impressively hot) open-fire kitchen turning out grilled masterpieces over a combination of 70 percent mesquite and 30 percent Florida hickory wood that gives the Bone-in Ribeye (and all the delectable meats) their incomparable flavors. The menu is only difficult for the decision-making process it requires, as nearly everything seems alluring and order-worthy. Appetizer favorites include Yellowfin Tuna with mango, shaved avocado, cilantro and sesame oil

Running the show like a finely tuned orchestra is Director of Restaurants Antonio Palomares, whose refinement and global experience is reflected in the perfectly timed tango of the staff. Younnes, one of the cast of congenial waiters dressed in smart red jackets, doesn’t just present the appetizers; he serves them with elegance acquired from his native Morocco and global fine-dining posts. A young man from the Philippines proudly describes each of the freshly baked breads he presents. Jalil, a most gracious and knowledgeable French sommelier, handpicks perfectly paired selections from a vast list that includes the Faena family’s first wine, the Faena Malbec. The delightfully cosmopolitan nature of the staff contributes to the restaurant’s international appeal, and they have clearly hand-picked the best of the best. After dinner, don’t miss C’est Rouge!, the Paris-meetsBuenos Aires cabaret in the Faena theater every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening. exuses have been known for certain qualities since Toyota first launched its premium division in 1989 with its ambitious LS luxury car supported by a warmed-over Camry called the ES250. Both were upscale, conservatively styled and faultlessly assembled, and over time they proved highly reliable and, well, highly forgettable. More than a dozen additional Lexus models have emerged since with similarly high marks for quality, but little to stir the loins in terms of styling. Then Toyota President Akio Toyoda, a genuine car enthusiast and talented racer, held a particularly impactful discussion with potential customers at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during which most in attendance characterized Lexus products to be nice but rather, uh, boring, the mandate to set: add emotion to the brand and “ensure that the words ‘boring’ and Lexus never showed up in the same sentence again.” Well, mission accomplished, we’d say, especially with the two we are profiling this month.
2018 LEXUS LC
If the LC500 looks like a concept car, that’s because a concept car is how it started out in 2012, and that’s all it was expected to be. But soon after the original show car debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the design’s overwhelming response prompted Lexus to green-light the swoopy coupe for production in two forms: the juicy V-8-powered LC500, or the more serene, fuel-efficient LC500h hybrid. And after driving both on the road and on a racetrack at the LC preview drive in Spain, I can say that the

last word any sane individual will use to describe it is “boring.” Styling is really quite radical, especially for a Lexus. The classic, longhood/short-deck proportions are Corvette-like, only with cabin that’s been enlarged sufficiently to add a pair of tiny rear seats that are rather useless for humans but plenty accommodating of gym bags and/or little dogs. The controversial “spindle grille” design that’s now a Lexus design hallmark is rendered more three-dimensionally than ever, with the upper region jutting forward then tucking back in near the base. Head- and taillamps are set within wild graphic elements that will be echoed on future Lexuses, we’re told, with the taillamps incorporating nifty two-way mirrors to give the illusion that they’re several feet deep. Clever. Things are more conventional inside, but the ambience remains decidedly avant-garde. As a true sports car, the sculpted sport seats are set low within the dash, doors and center console that seem to rise around the occupants like giant leather flower petals. The gauges are big and purposeful and the infotainment screen graphics are gorgeous, and while the LC introduces yet another evolution of Lexus’ control interface, it’s easy enough to learn. And as ever, the appointments are divine and assembled as well as cars that cost three times as much as the LC. Speaking of prices, after lots of time in both versions, we can say that
WRIGLEY
Wrigley is the sweetest pup in the world. At 20 months old this guy had a very rough start to life, but he is ďŹ nally enjoying being part of a loving foster home. Wrigley is very smart and has excelled at basic obedience; he would do best in an active, patient home. Wrigley has separation anxiety so he currently gets crated when he is left alone. Wrigley loves a game of fetch and going anywhere in a car!

the 471-hp LC500 delivers far more satisfaction for the money at its $92,995 base price than the $97,485 LC500h, the latter costing more on account of its sophisticated hybrid V-6 powertrain but which produces just 354 docile horsepower. Deliveries commence in May.
2017 LEXUS LX570
CNN recently ran a story about a ranch in southwest Texas that lets visitors drive around in World War II-era tanks for fun. And indeed, it looks fun. Well, the hulking Lexus LX570 SUV is about as close as you can get to replicating that experience in an automobile that can be driven on public roads in peacetime. Only without the turret and antique cool-factor, the fun is decidedly missing. Like the LC coupe, it’s far from boring, just at the opposite extreme. Certainly, there’s considerable daylight between the eight-passenger LX570 and a Sherman Tank, though the LCX’s 6,000-lb. curb weight is closer to tank level than most other four-wheeled things, including the gargantuan, long-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade ESV. What’s the point of it, you ask? Well, the LX570 is a Toyota Land Cruiser beneath the skin and, as such, boasts astounding off-road capability that is bound to remain untapped forever by its customers yet is a necessity in order to sell against Range Rovers. It’s a proper SUV flagship, and at the flagship SUVs level, customers demand that their demand that their vehicles can actually do what they look like they can do, even if the furthest they ever go off-road is parking on the grass at a neighbor’s estate. However unstoppable the LX570 is, it’s a dinosaur next to most other SUVs. This model first appeared in 2008, and a 2016 freshening just

made it scarier—the only way you could make it more intimidating would be with camouflage paint and machine guns. At the helm, one never forgets how big and tall it is. You’re never close to the action—it’s like driving in a tree—and between the window pillars, rear headrests and huge side mirrors, outward vision is poor, making tight quarter maneuvers a daunting task. Even with its big V-8 corralling 383 ponies underhood, the LX570 is reticent to accelerate, though once your chosen velocity is reached, it’s pure, Lexus-grade serenity. At $90,855, the LX570 is far pricier than other luxo-utes with as many seats and similar or better powertrains. It certainly fits Toyoda-san’s antiboring mandate, but unless a mobile missile launcher finds its way onto the options list, we’re not sure why we’d want one. If that does happen, however, Texas here we come! To test drive one of the models reviewed here, visit Lexus of Pembroke Pines, 16150 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, or call them at 888-235-1274.
