For the contest, Armando laid out plans for Cream franchises in Australia, where there is no ice cream place like it, and took first place in the statewide contest. Arc Broward’s 6th Annual Delish presented by PNC Bank takes place Thursday, May 4th, from 7 pm to 10 pm at the Gallery of Amazing Things in Dania Beach. The culinary event not only promises a delicious evening; it also helps break the stigma against those working with disabilities by pairing Arc Culinary students with South Florida’s top chefs. Guests will be able to taste dishes from the best restaurants in the area such as 3030 Ocean, Hardy Park Bistro, Wild Sea Oyster Bar, Artisan Beach House, Grille 401 and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit Arc Broward initiatives and programs like Arc Culinary, which provides culinary training and job placement assistance for people with disabilities and life challenges. High school sophomore Armando Martinez had an assignment for his DECA club competition: pick a company that was already in business and come up with an international business plan. When his dad suggested Cream (an acronym for “Cookies Rule Everything Around Me,” which explains their massive ice cream sandwiches made with homemade Snickerdoodles and Turtle cookies, among other varieties), an ice cream shop in San Francisco that he had visited on business trips out west, Armando

MOVES It’s easier than ever to master them now, at Fred Astaire in Weston. If the thought of going out dancing—or worse yet, attending a gala where you must move elegantly and confidently across a dance floor wearing (gasp!) heels—fills you with angst, take a breath: Fred Astaire is here to help. The newly opened studio located right on Weston Road offers lessons in salsa, mambo, cha cha, paso doble, jive, tango, waltz, quickstep and more. If you’re shy, go for the private lessons, but group lessons—where you can meet kindred spirits and learn the “mechanics” of dance—and practice lessons are also available. So whether you have a special occasion to prepare for or you just want to be more graceful moving to the music, check it out; for more information, call 954-849-8484 or visit the website at www.fredastaire.com.

Blue Stream Cable makes viewing more enticing with attractive new offers.

No more being held hostage by crazy-expensive cable subscriptions: BlueStream, the cable provider service that recently took over Advanced Cable Communications, has just launched a 1G broadband service and new Tivo-powered offerings in Weston and Coral Springs. While the normal price for 1G is about $110 monthly, as of February BlueStream is selling it for only $59.95 for the first two years (they dub it “the fastest speed in town”). The Tivo-based service allows customers to record up to six shows at one time and will eventually be integrating access to services such as Netflix and YouTube this summer. MAY 2017

Hotels and bars and cocktails have always gone hand in hand, and The Hotel Bar, now open at The Diplomat Beach Resort & Spa in Hollywood, keeps this longheld tradition going. Bartender Willy Shine is serving up his adaptations of iconic signature cocktails from hotels around the world, along with libations that pay tribute to local bartenders and the next generation of iconic drinks. All cocktails use ingredients from the resort’s “juice commissary, one of the first in South Florida. The passport cocktail menu transports guests from Havana to Singapore to New Orleans to 1800s New York City, paying homage to the cocktails made famous in global hotels, including the Singapore Sling adapted from The Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Nacional Cocktail from The Hotel Nacional in Havana. But The Hotel Bar also celebrates cocktails from recognized bartenders in the South Florida area, including the Papa Doble, adapted from Julio Cabrera, and the Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned adapted from Elad Zvi. Along with the tasty drinks, there are live musical performances every Saturday night from 10 p.m.-1a.m. The Diplomat Beach Resort & Spa is located at 3555 S. If you haven’t heard of the Vixen Workout yet, consider yourself in-the-know. Founder and creator Janet Jones has cleverly disguised exercise as an exhilarating, hip-hop dance class that burns anywhere from 400 to 1,000 calories in 60 minutes. Channel your inner Beyoncé or Ciara as you learn some sexy dance moves inspired by Miami’s nightlife (don’t worry, the moves aren’t too complicated). Weston residents can join the “Vixen Army” at popup classes every Monday and Wednesday night at 8:30 at AMP Fitness. 111 Grand Palms Dr., Pembroke Pines; 954.450.5535; www. vixenworkout.com

JONES’ TIPS TO LOOK LIKE A VIXEN THIS SUMMER: • We all know drinking water has tons of benefits, but let’s face it, water can be, well, basic. To get a refreshing kick, infuse your waters to make them more appealing. Try lemon and mint. • Choose low-calorie alcoholic drinks and stay away from sugary options. My go-to is a “Strawberry Citrus Vodka Cocktail,” which includes muddled fresh strawberries, fresh mint, a natural sweetener, citrus vodka and fresh-squeezed lemon juice.

• Keep this mantra in mind: Bikini over BBQ. When you’re at a summer BBQ, it’s easy to fall prey to cheeseburgers, chips and potato salad. Choose healthier alternatives such as grilled chicken, shrimp and veggies.

Watermelon, a summer staple at barbeques and picnics, is now becoming the basis of a popular drink for athletes and the health-conscious to refresh and hydrate. One brand, Tsamma Juice, is made right here in Florida by Frey Farms, where the farmers grow, harvest, crush and bottle their watermelons by hand. “Each bottle contains over one-and-a-half pounds of fresh crushed watermelons, and our proprietary process gives Tsamma the highest amount of lycopene, potassium and L-citrulline Sarah Frey-Talley on the market,” says founder Sarah FreyTalley. “The amount of L-citrulline in watermelon is important. It dilates your blood vessels, enabling rapid rehydration and muscle recovery.” Frey-Talley says her juice is made from watermelons with seeds, because the original seeded variety that we all grew up eating is the best-tasting watermelon. Tsamma Juice is sold at Publix, Fresh Market and other local grocers. www.tsammajuice.com

Monica Svensson PILOT AT AMERICAN AIRLINES

Mom to Nicole, 15

“I am originally from Norway and most of my family still lives over there. At the age of 20, I decided to pursue a career as an airline pilot and I moved to Arizona, where I attended flight school, landing my dream job as a pilot with American Airlines in 1999. Needless to say, besides being a mom, I have a passion for speed, flying and traveling. I have traveled to every state in the U.S., to many of the Caribbean Islands, and to Europe as well as Latin America. I thoroughly enjoy visiting and experiencing new countries and cultures.” The rewards of motherhood: Very often it can be the small things: When she suddenly takes my hand while we’re walking, the incredible poems and sweet notes that she makes for me, the never-ending hugs and kisses, when she calls just to say I love you, when she thanks me for everything I do for her, when she picks up her dirty laundry (without me nagging!), the way she has this gift of reaching out to help someone in need (could be a friend or stranger). I’m just a very blessed, proud and thankful mom. The toughest parts: To be successful as a mom and as a career woman. It’s definitely a balancing act! As a Senior First Officer, I can get an excellent schedule flying day trips, with weekends off, holidays off, and one month of vacation during the summer. I love my job, but it’s way more important being a mom and being present. On keeping her sense of self: Sometimes, all it takes is some quiet time with candles, relaxing music and a glass of red wine. Other times I feel the need to go for an intense spinning session or a quick jog. My boyfriend Mark and I love to go boating and spend time on the water. The ocean is so very calming and therapeutic in its own way. We also like to cook or barbecue and just hang out in the backyard having endless conversations around the fire pit.

Elizabeth Caristo HUMAN SERVICES MANAGER AT VICTORY LIVING PROGRAMS

Mom to Ava, 4

“I am lucky enough to have a husband, daughter and career that all fuel my passions. My husband Joe and I decided a few years ago to turn one of my first passions—pizza!— into a family business. We found a great spot in Hollywood and opened Joe’s Old School Pizza. It’s been three years now, and we have opened two other locations; one in Coral Gables and our latest shop in our new hometown, Cooper City. With our employees’ help, we have been able to turn making pizza into a charitable cause. It all started a couple of years ago. Joe knew that helping children in need has always been a passion of mine, so he contacted Children’s Home Society in Fort Lauderdale to see how our family could start giving to their cause. We set up a weekly pizza night for the kids. Every Thursday, my daughter and I drop off dinner to all the children and teens living in their crisis shelter. It warms my heart to see how pepperoni pizza and zeppoli make kids smile, and serves as a constant reminder to my family to be thankful for all that we have in our lives. “I am also grateful to have my career be one of my biggest passions. I returned to work last year, after taking a few years to stay at home full-time to raise our daughter, Ava. When Ava started preschool, I realized that there was only one place that I wanted to be: back at work. I realized that I missed my family at Victory Living Programs. We are a nonprofit in Fort Lauderdale, our organization helps individuals with disabilities in Broward County to live, work and play more independently. The will and determination of the clients that we serve and the kind nature of my coworkers and colleagues keeps me grounded and fulfilled. Our latest project is to partner up with Victory Living Programs and use the pizzerias as on-the-job-training facilities, where job seekers with disabilities learn culinary skills, get work experience to build their résumé and earn a paycheck.” The rewards of motherhood: The adventure and wonderment of it all, along with the pure unbounded love we share for each other. The toughest parts: I struggle with exposure. How much is too much? Movies, tablets, smart phones, TV shows, commercials and the news are difficult to navigate, and don’t get me started on the power of YouTube and Disney on a preschooler. On keeping her sense of self: I love a good Venti Frappuccino from Starbucks, spoken word yoga with Christine Lewis, date nights with my hubby, seeing great friends, taking Ava to spend time with her grandparents on Sanibel Island, and a sunny weekend in The Keys or a family vacation always makes me feel better.

Maria Jacobo

IMAGE CONSULTANT, TRANSFORMATIONAL LIFE COACH, PHILANTHROPIST MJ HOUSE OF STYLE AND NEWCOR HAAPE COO

Mom to Enyol Martinez, 18, and Pedro Martinez Jr., 17 “My passion is to see people develop to their full potential. Helping others achieve that gives me the biggest satisfaction. That’s why I do what I do. I help individuals change their image from the inside out. It’s great to dress well, but you’ll look even better if it comes from inside of you. Another passion of mine are various non-profits which I have been involved with many for almost 15 years, especially autism. I'm the COO of a foundation called Helping Adults with Autism Perform and Excel (HAAPE). These young adults have so much potential, and helping them discover it and achieve it is one of my greatest passions.” The rewards of motherhood: Seeing my boys develop into these amazing human beings full of compassion, kindness, integrity and faith. Knowing I’m leaving in them a legacy of love and service. The love and respect we have for each other is priceless. The toughest parts: One, figuring out how to guide them without killing their essence…helping them discover that, manage their gifts and talents so they can see them, believe in themselves and let them choose the life they want to live. And two, letting go! We get so used to micromanaging their lives that we forget they need to make decisions on their own. It’s part of growing up. On keeping her sense of self: I pray. I start my day meditating the word of God and that keeps me centered and focused and brings me so much calmness and peace. I read and spend time with my friends. I also spend time volunteering. I have a women’s group that meets every Tuesday at my house where we come together and talk about life and share our experiences and faith. It gives me so much joy to see each one of us grow together.

Mom to Daniel, 34, and Alina, 31 “I am passionate about life and all the opportunities it affords us. I am passionate about travel, meeting new people, learning about new cultures and I am also very passionate about art.” The rewards of motherhood: The biggest joy as I look at my children today, is seeing how accomplished they are and the positive qualities they possess, including good morals, work ethic and integrity. Seeing them evolve with all these qualities has been heart-warming. The toughest parts: The biggest challenge for me is watching them grow older, move on with their own lives and have their own interests, while making it a priority to keep the family united and making time to see each other with all of our busy schedules. On keeping her sense of self: I try to work out frequently and keep to a meditation practice. I also stay very active and involved with my nonwork-related friends. I also love to cook and have people over. How working together works for them: Like all relationships, our relationship is based on trust and respect. I respect Daniel very much as a professional and in every way. I trust his decisionmaking, yet although at times we may not agree, it always has its way of working out because we have great communication. When you have great communication, you work very well with one another. The gifts she has given him: I see a good person that is kind, compassionate and humble. Most importantly, he remains aware that he must work hard for anything and everything.

Claire Manowitz RETIRED FROM COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE

Mom to Barbara Hollinger Mackenzie and Randy Stein, Grandmother to Tracy Winters and Jessica Stein “I loved golf, tennis fishing and traveling, but as I got older I knew something was missing in my life—until I found JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) in 1992. Saving children was what I was put on this earth to do. I became a founding board member of JAFCO and never looked back. I was the first JAFCO Foster Parent and held the first-ever charity event for them. JAFCO now takes care of hundreds of abused, neglected and disabled children from Dade to Broward County. They built a village for abused children and one for disabled children. They are both state-of-the-art and the only ones of their kind.” The rewards of motherhood: Seeing my children and grandchildren not only being mothers themselves to their own children, but also following in my footsteps in trying to help innocent children. I tried to teach them early in life how important it is to count your blessings every day and give back to the less fortunate. I not only would tell them this but I would show them with my actions. As a mother, you don’t actually know if they are listening, but I can tell you, actions speak louder than words. My daughter Barbara was a JAFCO foundation board member for many years, has donated many monies and time to the children of JAFCO, became a JAFCO godparent 10 years ago and is an adoptive parent of a young girl from JAFCO. My granddaughter, Tracy Winters, became very involved in JAFCO when she worked there for a few years as the Assistant Development Director and just chaired the Annual JAFCO Golf Tournament at Weston Hills that raised over $80,000 for the children. On keeping her sense of self: I never thought a lot about myself, as I always kept very busy. A lot of days when things got tough I would go to the JAFCO shelter and help rock and feed the innocent little babies there that really needed someone to care for them. Helping kids would really keep me in check and realize things really aren’t ever that bad. Now that I am 87 years old and in a wheelchair I watch a lot of old movies and order my family around. I guess roles have reversed and now they take care of me.

Scott and Angelique Gerow

For Scott and Angelique Gerow,

the owners of 360 Concierge and Staffing, no lavish request is too excessive— even if it involves hoisting an expensive, precious piece of artwork up the side of a high-rise building in powerful winds, so it will gracefully greet its owners when they arrive home. “It’s definitely one of the craziest things we’ve ever done,” says Scott of the nerve-wracking feat that took more than two hours to safely accomplish. “I see the art every time I walk into my client’s home and I think of that day. But without a doubt, it was worth it.” The Plantation couple manages and staffs multimillion-dollar estates around South Florida, most of them seasonal second or third homes, and whatever a client wants, they’ll find a way to make it happen. That is, if it can be done perfectly. “We did have a client who requested to have lunch in Cuba,” recalls Scott. “We try to never say no, but timing-wise, it couldn’t be done in a few hours. We want our clients to know that ‘yes’ isn’t always the right answer.” But this duo has found the right answer when it comes to keeping clients who spend most of their time in other parts of the country (or world) feel like their South Florida home is just as familiar and comfortable as their primary house. While the owners are away, the Gerows and their meticulously hand-selected staff often visit a home twice a week, checking lightbulbs, TVs, Wi-Fi, ovens, refrigerators and home security systems, ensuring everything is in impeccable working order. “You never know when a client will call on a Thursday and say, ‘The weather looks great and I’ll be in Miami playing golf tomorrow.’ We never want to play catch-up when a client arrives,” says Scott, who meets with clients faceto-face and maintains a running list of their likes and dislikes. An “arrival day” for the Gerows usually entails a methodical process of turning on lights and opening windows so it’s light and airy inside, stocking the fridge with the client’s favorite foods, flipping on their desired music and returning furniture to the balcony. “The home needs to feel like it’s lived in. When a client walks into the home, there is no lapse of service, nothing to be dealt with and they don’t have to be disturbed. We make sure

the secondary residence runs like a first residence,” insists Scott, who also offers a database of private chefs, housekeepers, drivers and aviation specialists. Each staff member is vetted and must understand the workings of multimillion-dollar homes, along with the privacy and discretion that highend clients desire. “While each client is different, at this level, all of their expectations are high, and we’re able to anticipate what they want while they are here.” The company will go as far as finding private chefs who can properly prepare a Passover meal ( a popular request in South Florida) to arranging a yacht or plane for a client’s stay. While Gerow started out as an executive chef in Manhattan, working at highly regarded restaurants such as Dwayne Park Cafe in Tribeca and celebrity raw food chef Matthew Kenney’s Monzu and Matthew’s restaurants, it was his time working with actor Robert De Niro that prepared him for dealing with high-net-worth clients. “Living in that world with De Niro gave me the foundation of knowing how to facilitate anything and everything at all times,” says Gerow, who assisted in the management of De Niro’s estate and helped set up homes when he traveled. Traveling with the actor offered Scott more than just a lesson in exclusive home management—it also afforded him the chance to meet the love of his life, Angelique, who was working on a yacht at the time. A Plantation native, she completes the “Living in that world with De Niro gave me dynamic duo when it comes to spot-on service; she spent many years working on prominent yachts, the foundation of knowing how to facilitate sailing around the world and attending to celebrities, athletes and dignitaries. “My natural state is to anything and everything at all times.” be a perfectionist and that’s why I did so well in the —SCOTT GEROW yachting industry. It wasn’t just a career for me. I

took great pleasure in being organized and industrious,” says Angelique, who is methodical in everything she does, from properly folding a blanket to making sure there isn’t a speck of dust in sight. “In yachting, we have a term called ‘guest ready,’ which means absolute perfection on board and ready to receive a guest. I found that mentality was lacking in homes that were used seasonally. These are beautiful homes; why shouldn’t they be guest-ready at all times?” When Scott and Angelique wed and moved to South Florida, they realized the level of service they were used to offering didn’t exist for highnet-worth clients, so they created 360 Concierge in January of 2011. The two settled on a home base of western Broward, where they would be close to their clients in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach while still enjoying the serenity and open, green spaces of Plantation. The Gerows also see the area as a burgeoning market for seasonal living. “Plantation and Weston are desirable places to live. There’s a lot of land with big homes that need care and maintenance,” Scott points out. “With places like Botaniko Weston opening, it will soon be an extraordinary spot for second homeowners.” So how does the personal household of two self-proclaimed “perfectionists” operate? “We have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, so chaos is our street number,” says Angelique. “But our kids are an offshoot of us and they appreciate order. My son knows that his shoes go in the cubby, and my daughter always puts her clothes in her hamper before bath time. We make it fun and it’s their kind of structure.”

“My natural state is to be a perfectionist and that’s why I did so well in the yachting industry. It wasn’t just a career for me. I took great pleasure in being organized and industrious.” —ANGELIQUE GEROW

MAY 2017

Lisbon is bursting at the seams with both charm and chill,

though it’s often overlooked in the shadow of other European capitals. Our advice: Don’t miss it. The Portuguese economy is slowly rebounding, thanks in part to a program from TAP Portugal airlines. Their Portugal Stopover program allows travelers to stay for 24, 48 or 72 hours in one of Portugal’s major cities (and the Azores) on their way to one of TAP’s 29 other destinations. The best part for you: Miami International Airport is a hub for TAP Portugal, which means the coastal country is closer than ever. Even if you’re just en route, a 24-hour stopover in Lisbon will be the highlight of your trip. 7:00 a.m.

HISTORIC HOTEL

If you’re coming from Miami, the nonstop flight will put you at Lisbon Portela International Airport (LIS) in just eight hours. A taxi ride from the airport into the center of the medieval city, crowned by a castle, takes about 25 minutes. Check into the Solar do Castelo hotel, a member of the Historic Hotels of Europe, and the only lodging located inside the castle walls. With just 11 rooms, the former mansion will feel all your own. A full breakfast is included with your stay, so if you haven’t had time to grab a bite yet, settle into a down-filled armchair in the lobby with a coffee and Lisbon’s signature sweet, pasteis de nata, a custard-filled tart. Or, take it outside to the veranda, lined with fragrant lemon trees. No one will blink an eye if you sneak a sip of Port from the bottle in your room before heading out. You’re in Portugal, after all.

Praça di Comércio is the main square by the river, where you can catch a bus tour of the city.

9:00 a.m.

12:00 p.m.

Round the corner to the main entrance of the Castelo de Sao Jorge, which originally dates from the second century BC. The Moors ruled the area until the 12th century, during the Second Crusade. After that, the castle became the residence of Afonso III and his court. The breathtaking overlooks from the hilltop, the highest point in Lisbon, offer panoramic views of the city and the wide, rolling Tagus river. Traverse the castle’s outer walls for a different photo opp at every cardinal direction. Take a few minutes to view the artifacts inside the museum, which include pottery—including the very first azulejos, the tiles for which Portugal is known today—and evidence of humans in the area dating back to the sixth century BC. Sit for a sec and snap a selfie with one of the vibrant peacocks that have made the hill their permanent home.

Once you reach the main square by the river, Praça do Comércio, hop on the Yellow Bus “Seven Hills” tour of the city via canarycolored tram. If you don’t get off at any of the stops, the narrated tour (12 languages are available) will take about an hour and a half, and is the best way to get acquainted with the major landmarks and geography of the city if you’re time-crunched. Each main point of interest comes with a brief history lesson and thorough description of some of the most interesting architectural and cultural stops, including Lisbon’s narrowest home, just six feet in depth. You’ll also wind through some of each neighborhood’s quaint streets, some barely wide enough for the tram to pass. Lisbon’s traditional quarters of Alfama, Castelo and Bairro Alto are where most of the city’s culture was born, but if there’s cash burning a hole in your pocket, the elegant neighborhood of Lapa is the place to make it rain.

ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE

If you look up from any street, you’ll notice cables running overhead. The Lisbon trams and funiculars have helped citizens and tourists traverse the cities steep streets for more than 100 years. It might be tempting to get on the tram and glide down the hill on one of these historic vehicles, but hold off. You’ll pass plenty of adorable shops and cafés on your way to the center of the city at the foot of the hill, including boutiques selling handbags, umbrellas, wallets and more made from one of the world’s most sustainable and versatile materials, almost exclusive to Portugal—cork. More than half of the world’s cork comes from Portugal, and the impermeable, stain-resistant material is harnessed by innovative designers for way more than wine bottles.

ELEGANT EATS

So far, your inner history buff has taken in all of Lisbon’s rich Romantic, Medieval and Gothic architecture. But the modern and the surreal have a spot here, too. At Espaco Espelho D’Agua, land meets sea in an experimental space dedicated to modern art and gastronomy. Make a reservation in advance to sit on the terrace for lunch, where you’ll people-watch on the promenade of the stark white building. This isn’t your traditional Portuguese fare, though you’ll find odes to the cuisine throughout the menu. a flight of reds or whites to start your oeno-journey.

4:00 p.m.

Stumble (carefully!) across the street from ViniPortugal to the Arco da Rua Augusta to watch the sun set from the city’s best vantage point. The trip to the top costs just one Euro, and you’ll stop in the middle to discover the history behind the arch’s construction. On All Saints Day in 1755, the Great Lisbon Earthquake just about leveled the city, and killed more than 50,000 people. The devastation was widespread. Before then, Lisbon was one of Europe’s most prosperous port cities, a hub for exploration, art, and science. After the earthquake, the entire city was rebuilt. The arch, commissioned by Queen Augusta, commemorated the earthquake and celebrated the city’s renaissance. At the top, look out over the Tagus River and take sunset selfies with bird’s-eye views of Castel de Sao Jorge and other landmarks in the background.

MUST-SEE MONASTERY

A few minutes’ walk from the restaurant is a UNESCO World Heritage site, Jeronimos Monastery, a perfect place to walk off your multi-course feast. Originally commissioned in 1495 and completed in 1601, the monastery is a national treasure and the hour-long tour of the buildings is a must. Here, you’ll be able to view the tomb of explorer Vasco de Gama and traverse the mosaicked fountains, where symbols of Christianity meld with pagan astrology. The monastery’s buildings also house two major national museums worth exploring— the National Archaeological Museum and Maritime Museum, celebrating Portugal’s long history of seafaring exploration. Does the name Christopher Columbus ring any bells? 5:30 p.m.

WINE O’CLOCK

Head back to the Praça do Comércio, load up a tasting card and grab some glasses for a tour of Portugal’s wine regions at ViniPortugal. The self-serve wine dispensers are filled with 20 different bottles from the country’s 14 different wine-producing areas, including the islands of Madeira and the Azores. Up until now, you might have only sipped on vinho verde or ruby Port. Here’s your chance to lounge in the vast wine hall and find a new favorite bottle to take home and share. The wine room’s mission is to bring awareness to the world of Portugal’s vibrant and sophisticated local viticulture, and tastings occur throughout the day. Ask one of the docents at the front desk to suggest

DINNER AND A SHOW

Take the funicular back up the hill toward the castle—after all that wine and spiral-staircase climbing, you’ll need a break. Chapito a Mesa is part circus school, part artist colony, and all weird and fun. Enter in through the shop, where the resident artists sell their creations. You’ll surely want to take home jewelry made from recycled cars. Under the big top, open a bottle of wine while you wait for your table upstairs. When you make a reservation, ask for a table for two facing the west windows. At night, the lights of the city twinkle below. The restaurant can get raucous, as animated conversation is highly encouraged. Enjoy out-of-the-box dishes like grilled Iberian pork and Portuguese lamb.

Following the success of Naked Taco on Miami Beach and Naked Lunch in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, the Hell’s Kitchen and Iron Chef alum has opened Naked Crab Seafood Kitchen and Cocktail Bar in Fort Lauderdale’s B Ocean hotel, formerly the Rat Pack favorite Yankee Clipper. B Ocean has undergone a complete transformation, while retaining glimpses of its history and storied past as a favorite of 1950s-era entertainers. Turn left at The Florida Bar and down the corridor toward the neon-lit Naked Crab sign, you’ll see photos of Marilyn Monroe and her contemporaries (sans entourage), the original Clipper Room menu (soup, .15) and memorabilia from another era. And then with a flash of neon, one enters the dimly lit den of Naked Crab, or as Chef Pagano describes it, “a stripped-down, dressed-up crab and seafood house, cooking up classic signatures with the freshest, most delicate, impeccably sourced fish and sushi, where fundamentally, raw is hot.” The man has a way with words. Part entertainer with a wicked sense of humor and fondness for hip hop, poker and horse racing, Chef Pagano brings his signature

Gustavo is a leader loved by his people but surrounded by conspirators. He also harbors a secret shame: he adores Amelia, the wife of his closest friend and loyal minister, Count Anckarström. Anckarström interrupts a meeting between Amelia and Gustavo. Furious, he determines to join a conspiratorial plot to assassinate his master. At a masked ball he stabs Gustavo. With his dying breath Gustavo forgives Anckarström and assures him of Amelia’s innocence.

differences Audi’s all-new S4 sedan and S5 coupe bring equivalent upgrades in performance and style.

ll three big-name German automotive brands offer their compact luxury cars in three performance potencies. In culinary terms, we could characterize them as seasoned, spicy and OMG-my-mouth’s-on-fire HOTTTTTT!!! At Audi, this would describe the new-for-’16 A4 sedan and the new-for-’18 A5 coupe, their sportier S4 and S5 variants, and the stupendous RS4/RS5 models, respectively. At this point, RS versions of the current A4 have not been confirmed by Audi, and the recently unveiled 2018 RS5 won’t arrive until late this year at the earliest. But the good news is the S4 and S5 models—the spicy ones—have just arrived, and once you’ve driven one, you may wonder if Audi needs an RS4 or RS5 at all. You’ll only need to drive one to come to that understanding, as we drove both and found them to be virtually identical in character, however different they are in appearance. This was hardly surprising, as the two cars share nearly everything under their skin, from the “MQB” architecture that makes them so solid to the twin-turbo V-6 engines that make them so fast. The styling upgrades are also applied equally, including a larger (identical) wheel/tire package, modified grille slats, shimmery silver mirrors, more technical front bumper trim and rear bumpers with diffuser vanes and quad exhaust tips. Both secure their front seat occupants in supportive sport seats with side bolsters that can be tightened or relaxed to fit most body types, as well as faux suede ac-

cent panels and aluminum or carbon fiber trim. All S4 and S5 models get Audi’s nifty “Virtual Cockpit” instrument cluster, a customizable 12.3-inch screen that can be configured to look like conventional dials, a full-width Google map-based navigation screen with smaller instruments, or a mix of both. And what of that common character? Do they even have character? (We’re talking about German sedans, after all, so that’s not a given.) Well, happily, they do have some character—more than the A4/A5

models on which they’re based though not as much as, say, the frisky Mercedes-AMG C43 sedan and coupe. Their sheer competence as sport sedans/sport coupes, from their propensity to gather momentum regardless of the weather—thank you, sport-tuned “Quattro” all-wheel drive—to their abilities to retain so much of that momentum in corners makes them innately more fun to hustle along a twisty road. The sharp exhaust note from the 354-hp turbocharged V-6 is a) audible, and b) enjoyable, also adding to the thrill factor when accelerating, though we would kind of like to hear even more of it. And the telepathic precision of the steering and pan-flat cornering attitude made possible by the lowered suspension with adjustable shocks beg you to take the next turn ever faster than the last. That said, all the while, both cars feel like they’re holding something back, like they want to show you their wilder side but for some reason don’t, seemingly content as the driver’s humble servant rather than a partner in crime. Maybe that’s what the RS models are for. Of course, there are a few differentiators between the S4 and S5 worth mentioning. As a four-door sedan, the S4 is easier to get in and out of (especially for rear-seaters), is more spacious inside, and at $51,875, is $2,175 cheaper. The slinkier S5 boasts a more curvaceous body and a more intimate interior, but its low-roof coupe body, two-

person rear seat and smaller trunk limit practicality, and at $54,050 to start, it’s a bit pricier. A five-door hatchback fashioned in the S5’s low-slung vein may address some of the S5 coupe’s practicality concerns, while the upcoming S5 convertible model will offer more infinite headroom for all aboard. At the end of the day, however, there’s more that unites the S4 and S5 than separates them—a good thing considering how much goodness there is overall. The speedy, if sterile, S4 and S5 are on sale now. To test drive an Audi, stop by Audi Pembroke Pines, 15000 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines.
