MAY/JUNE 2016
Acclaimed drummer Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience returns to Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Wednesday, June 8, at 8 p.m. The concert pays tribute to the iconic band’s career including albums Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti, and celebrates the life of Jason Bonham’s father and legendary Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham. “It’s part storyteller, with [the use of] multimedia screens…We’re creating little pieces that I will narrate over, which give a little background about some songs we play and the reason why I’m playing them,” says Bonham, who fills in for his father in the Led Zeppelin Experience. Bonham explains how the show will include “stories of myself growing up with dad and how Zeppelin has been . . . part of my life from the beginning.” Tickets are on sale now and range from $30-$55. Reserve your seats today by calling 800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

t takes strength to be a mom—super strength—and superpowers to juggle everything that comes with it. I’m in awe of mothers and their abilities every day. The amount of energy it takes to care for our families—cooking, working, organizing schedules, being the taxi driver for all the kids’ activities, helping with homework, the list goes on—leaves a mom with little time to herself. I’m grateful for my own strong mom, who instilled in me at a young age the importance of exercise and healthy eating. She led

This lifestyle gives me the energy I need to keep up with my kids and live a happier and healthier life. MARCIE SIEGEL SALES REPRESENTATIVE FOR KOWA PHARMACEUTICALS AMERICA, INC. MOM TO GRANT, 19, AND CAMILE, 16
MY WORKOUT: Is an
everyday ritual. It gives me a sense of balance and strength. I am a certified Yoga Instructor and teach a weekly Hot Vinyasa class. I take two to three Pilates classes a week for core strength and I am an avid road cyclist for my cardio, averaging 150 to 200 miles per week. I’m very consistent with my routine and love the way it makes me feel. MY EXERCISE: Exercise
is my passion. When I’m teaching Yoga I feel
grounded, authentic and of service to others. Yoga and Pilates complement each other by using total body integration, which activates my stabilizing muscles. This increases my strength, flexibility and balance when I’m on my road bike. MY MOTIVATION: I
surround myself with teachers and friends who inspire me to be the best version of myself. MY DIET: I’m not a big
breakfast person, so before a ride I have a scoop of peanut or almond butter and a banana. On a day I’m not riding early, I will have yogurt or oatmeal with fruit. As a pharmaceuticals sales representative, we have
several lunch appointments throughout the week, so my lunch options are limited and not always the healthiest. I usually eat whatever is available but keep my portions small. For dinner during the week I cook fresh, healthy, lean meals with protein, vegetables, salad, rice or pasta. I use the crockpot to cook hearty soups and chilis. On the weekends I splurge going out to dinner and pretty much eat whatever I want. I enjoy a good filet with pinot noir or guacomole and chips with a margarita. Living life in moderation allows me to find balance.

On becoming a parent: Life changed in many ways, like waking up every two hours in the middle of the night for feedings and still getting up by 6 am for work. Then learning how to plan and adjust my life—I couldn’t just get up and go; there were many steps I had to take to make sure my girls were taken care of for the day. What she never expected parenthood would bring: So many emotions and so much laughter. My girls make me cry and laugh at the same time. It’s a girl thing.
The lessons she most wants to impart to her children: Honesty fortifies a solid foundation for all values. Always tell the truth. Honor and love your family; if they don’t respect us as parents or each other as siblings, they will struggle to ever have respect for others or even themselves. And always be grateful and thankful.

What fascinates her most about her children: How intelligent, witty and caring they are. Naturally, girls are maternal, and I can say all three are very nurturing.

DESIGNER, ADRIANA HOYOS DESIGN STUDIO KIDS : Eduardo José Pérez Hoyos, 27, & Andrea Pérez Hoyos, 24
On becoming a parent: It certainly changed my life. The challenge was to balance my time as a mother and a professional. Today I am very proud of my role as a mother and when I see my children Eduardo Jose and Andrea, I know the sacrifice paid off. What she never expected parenthood would bring: I never expected to have the strong connection we have. The bond between both my children and me is something I never experienced before and never ceases to amaze me. What fascinates her most about your children: Eduardo Jose has a great and very particular sense of humor, and he is very outgoing. We have a strong connection and we think alike in many cases. Andrea is very charismatic and easy going; she makes friends and connects with people easily. She really cares for other people and has a strong sense of social responsibility. They both share the same passion for design that I have, and they manifest it in their own unique ways. The lessons she most wants to imparts to her children: I always tell my children that the most important things in life is to be true to yourself and never compromise your values. Whatever they do, they should do it with all their passion and hard work. Persistence is what will get them to the finish line.

Channing Crowder II and Aja Crowder DAVIE
CHANNING IS A FORMER MIAMI DOLPHINS LINEBACKER AND CURRENT CBS SPORTS RADIO HOST of the Hochman,
Crowder & Krantz Show on WQAM AJA IS A REAL ESTATE AGENT with Coldwell Banker in Weston and owns her own concierge beauty business, La Bella Lash Bar PARENTS TO Channing III, 4, & Ava Milan, 3
On becoming a parent: Our perspective shifted because it was no longer about us. No more crazy fishing trips, wild horseback rides or hog hunting in the middle of the night. We were living like college students our whole relationship, wrapped up in the football lifestyle. Once we got married and start having kids, it was time to bring it down a notch but still be true to who we were. So I traded horseback riding for pony rides at Tree Tops Park, and Channing still takes his fishing trips, but now we have a larger boat to accommodate the kids. What they never expected parenthood would bring: Parenthood has definitely brought out the researcher in me. I would leave things to my own knowledge or opinions before, but now I need to talk to at least three different moms, read reviews online, read a book or two, or subscribe to a few mommies’ blogs, especially with my first child. When Ava arrived, I cooled off a bit.
PHOTO: RICARDO MEJIA
What fascinates her most about her children: Channing is so much like his father: outgoing, smart, super social, extremely athletic and fearless. Ava is the most beautiful little brainiac. She picks up things very quickly and always wants to know, “Why?” Her two’s were a breeze and I was feeling like I had it all figured out, [but] that didn’t last long—the threes have been pretty mischievous. We call her our little sweet-and-sour patch!
60
The lessons they most want to impart to their children: We’re huge on giving back to the community. Channing has several events that we do every year to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County. Every step of the way we involve the kids. Our fishing tournament, toy drive, football camps…the kids are front and center. It is imperative for them to keep this legacy of community service going. As blessed as we are, we would like them to always be humble, show gratitude and have a positive attitude no matter what the world throws at them.

PRESIDENT, Durée & Company PR, Marketing & Special Events MOM TO Harrison Ross, 13, & Harlee Ross, 9
On becoming a parent: I always say there’s one thing that changes when you become a parent: everything! Parenthood definitely makes you become selfless—and more responsible. Our kids are at really great ages and it’s a pleasure to hang and spend time together as a family. What she never expected parenthood would bring: Endless amounts of happiness, worry, fun, snuggles—and tons of unconditional love.
The lessons she most wants to impart to her children: Always be kind and respectful. Nothing worth having comes easy. The only way to do great work is to do what you love.

What fascinates her most about her children: I am fascinated by Harrison’s compassion and kindness for all those around him. He is a gentle soul, a genuinely sweet young man, and a people pleaser. He is very much like his father. Harlee’s zest and excitement for life leaves me in awe. There isn’t a task she won’t finish or an opportunity she won’t seize. She’s a phenomenal student and is very proud to be making the million-word reader club this year in addition to joining her dance studio’s “company” program, which requires her to dance five days a week in a variety of dance genres—ballet, tap, jazz, hiphop and acro. Being the daredevil that she is, Harlee loves a downhill skiing race.

On becoming a parent: Responsibility! Knowing my future decisions impacted more than just myself. Being responsible for an entire family with my wife, Caroline, and deciding what is best for all. What he never expected parenthood would bring: So many girls! Also, the daily challenges of developing our children into solid citizens of the community with the addition of social media into all of our lives. Didn’t see all that coming!
PHOTO: RICARDO MEJIA
What fascinates him most about his children: I married my second wife, Caroline, about 10 years ago. The girls at that time were 5, 5 and 7 years old. They didn’t ask for it; they were just put into a new and different family environment. With all the inconsistencies of three different homes, different schools, different parents, and different personalities, they have turned out to be really great kids.

The lessons he most wants to impart to his children: To not grow up with a sense of entitlement. It will not serve them well in their future careers.

Sarah BarberBazail INTERIOR DESIGNER, B. Design KIDS: Alex, 11 & Lincoln, 8
On becoming a parent: After having kids, my life changed in so many ways but mostly in the way that I wasn’t alone anymore. Everything I did would now involve my kids, and all thoughts and actions were done keeping their best interest at heart always. It taught me to be less selfish, [and] I am an only child, so that can be challenging at times. What she never expected parenthood would bring: So much love and joy as well as worry and frustration all at the same time. What fascinates her most about her children: I think what fascinates me the most is the way they see life. When you grow up, you sometimes lose sight of what is important, and a child teaches you exactly what is important—to smile and be happy and not to forget to laugh. Alex never ceases to amaze me with his ability to be a peacemaker and always look at the positive side of life. Lincoln fascinates me with his free spirit and lust for adventure! The lessons she most wants to impart to her children: To always be the kind and loving souls that they are and to treat everyone fairly. Always stay positive and never give up. I also hope to teach them to always have each others backs. I never had any siblings and so, to me, it is a very special bond that they share and I hope never lose.

prep FOR summer As the “mean season” descends on South Florida, it’s time to think about ways to lighten and brighten our décor, reduce stress and increase ease of living. Here are a few tips and tricks to try, from quick fixes to more long-term strategies.

behind the bed in a solid texture. Even if it’s white, it gives the room light.” A minor change like a shag rug put down in front of the bed changes up the look of the room immediately, as does a bright coverlet laid over the duvet. “Blues are hot right now—cobalt, teal, turquoise—along with citrus.” And our favorite idea of Bleustein’s: “Switch out your ceiling fan for a fabulous chandelier. It totally changes the room and you can do that in the course of a day.” Lucid Interior Designer and blogger Michelle Mawby, who recently offered her ideas for a warm-weather decorating philosophy
to styleathome.com, believes in a simple idea that South Floridians tend to practice as a rule: blurring the line between indoors and out. That can range from using sisal and seagrass rugs inside to setting an ultra-elegant table for dining in the backyard. More quick summer update options from Michelle include replacing wool cushions with lightweight cotton and linen versions in bright colors, changing out your current bathroom towels to more brightly colored ones, and paring down all your home’s rooms in general by putting away heavy displays of framed photos or accessories and leaving just one or two.
FAST FIXES
Not that it ever really gets too cool here in South Florida, but in the fall and winter seasons we tend to think of warm fall colors, heavier comforters on the beds—you get the idea. When summer begins to rear its steamy head, it’s time to rethink all of the above. Not just because of the temperatures, but because we long for change…even a small one (or two). As it turns out, that’s all it requires to freshen up and “summer-ize” any room in the house. “In the bedroom you can do this very inexpensively,” says interior designer Sheryl Bleustein, of Sheryl Bleustein Interiors in Weston. For example, she suggests, “You can throw a wall covering on an accent wall

“Solar shades may be the way to go. They’re the best thing for reducing heat and keeping visibility, because you still have the natural light.”
Sonia Najman
A LONGER-TERM INVESTMENT
Even if you love the soaring temps the South Florida summers bring, you probably don’t love the fact that that heat creeps into your house through your windows, whether they’re tinted or not. Walk by an undressed set of French doors inside when it’s 92 degrees outside and you’re likely to break a sweat. But naturally, there are solutions for that. Sonia Najman, owner of Window

Designs by Sonia in Hollywood, says solar shades may be the way to go. “They’re the best thing for reducing heat and keeping visibility,” she says, “because you still have the natural light. They’re what I always recommend for people who have a lot of heat coming in. Unlike a fresh coat of paint or a new coverlet for the bed, however, you don’t just do this for the summer and bring them down in the winter. The shades are expensive. They work on both windows and sliders, are battery oper-
ated and can be put on a remote control.” And in addition to being functional, the shades also add to the décor. “The Hunter Douglas Pirouettes are beautiful and can look very contemporary,” says Najman. As for color trends in general, she cites gray and taupe—“but mostly gray”—as the color trends to watch this year (“Gray is the new beige,” she says), with a pop of color that you can switch out from season to season. BOOST THE BACKYARD
Check out your grill—is it rusted out, crusted over, outdated? If so, take advantage of the annual Memorial Day Sales that offer up new gas and charcoal grills and smokers at crazy-good prices. Then, up your grill skills. Every guy thinks he’s got game when it comes to firing up those flames, but everyone can benefit from some summer tips from two true masters: internationally acclaimed Chef Michael Lewis (formerly of Zuma and now owner at KYU) and Chef Makoto Okuwa, owner of Bal Harbour’s much-loved Makoto. Here are three from each to keep and grill by:
Chef Michael Lewis:
• No two grills or smokers are the same. No two pieces of meat, fish or vegetables are the same. Find a cooking medium that you’re comfortable with, whether it’s wood, charcoal or gas. I choose wood, specifically old oak because I love the flavor and the way it burns (hot at first, then slow and low). Wood is also a renewable resource that we are happy to help plant more of, here in Florida and afar. • Get a fire or temperature that you feel comfortable with; there’s nothing worse than running around because your fire is too
hot or waiting around because it’s too cold. That’s when you make bad decisions. • You have to play with what you have to get your desired result. Make small changes to time, temperature and seasoning each time you grill and you’ll figure out your mistakes and your favorites.
Chef Makoto Okuwa:
• Use good amounts of high-quality olive oil for vegetables and shellfish because they don’t produce their own fat. Oil protects against dehydration from high heat and gives better caramelization, especially with vegetables and shellfish. • Grill fish at a high heat, but with distance from flames; if the fish is too close to the flames, the skin can burn. • Grill meat at a lower heat and closer to the flame. This way you can gently cook meat slowly inside and out and by the time you reach your desired temperature the meat should have a good crust outside, especially thick cuts of tenderloin or rib eye. The exception to this rule is to cook meat with high heat and short distance when you have thin cuts of meat or skirt steak or even skewered small meats so they don’t dry out from the longer cooking process. We’ll check in next month with more ideas for July and August, but in the meantime, for more information on our expert sources, visit www.sherylbleusteininteriors. com; www.windowdesignsbysonia.com inWESTON MAGAZINE

his jewel of a home in Weston’s
Windmill Ranch Estates was brand new when awardwinning designer Toby Zack was given the green light to demonstrate her skills. Once she toured the 4-bedroom, 2½-bath space located on an acre of land, Zack was happy with what she envisioned for the blank canvas. Not only was the nearly 6,000-square-foot house clean and contemporary, it had good-sized rooms, easy angles and uncluttered lines. “I was so thrilled. I flipped when I saw this house,” says Zack, both an interior designer and contemporary furniture designer based in Fort Lauderdale. “I wanted to create a clean environment that flows.” The homeowners are in the jewelry design business. The husband creates the pieces, and the wife works with him in the company. Since their children are grown, the house was designed with their tastes in mind. Once she got the commission, Zack went right to work. This was not the first house she had designed for the couple, so she knew what they liked. “They wanted a simple home with easy maintenance because they have

dogs,” says Zack. “But it had to be sophisticated because they do a great deal of entertaining.” Creating the design of a brand-new house and completing it in a short period of time was a challenge. There wasn’t much construction—just combining two baths into one large master, improving a powder room in the public area of the house and waving a magic wand in the kitchen, where the wife spends as much time as possible pursing her passion for cooking. Keeping in mind the words “clean, simple and minimalist,” Zack began to put her plan together. The home’s floors are made of uninterrupted largeblock limestone pieces. The ceilings and walls are clean and white so that the couple’s art work stands out. In fact, it’s the designer’s studied use of art that lends the home its necessary color and texture. “I had really good pieces of art to work with,” the designer notes. The modern lighting in general adds another dimension to the home, plus the designer used lots of natural light to open things up. and easy theme in each room. Zack used furniture from The Toby Collection, an exclusive and eclectic line of furnishings that she discovered during her frequent travels to France, Italy, Belgium and different areas in North and South America; the line also includes many pieces that Zack has designed herself. The living and dining room areas are double-level and a contrast in light and dark, which results in a dramatic tableau while retaining the goal of presenting light and clean spaces absent of clutter. Sophisticated vignettes are constant repetitions of rectangles and circles, and squares and rounded edges, all in alternating dark and light tones. The couple and their guests walk down a few steps to the living room, where white leather club chairs, a parsons table, floating shelf and kicky piece of realist art standout, after enjoying a home-cooked meal at the high gloss ebony and glass table in the dining room with a watercolor painting overhead. “I do things right by studying the size, scale and proportion of the rooms, then custom designing to
those specifications,” says Zack. “That is the only way to do it and get a perfect result.” A screen separates the family room from the living room, yet this entire public area flows effortlessly. “The flow from room to room is consistent— another thing that makes the home so unique,” says Zack. “It is a wonderful place to entertain.” The eat-in kitchen is a natural and strong setting for cooking, family pow-wows and visits with friends, with countertops of Jerusalem limestone, which is sturdy like granite and needs practically no care. Cabinets are made of pearwood, an attractive and uniform material from Africa. Appliances are modern and streamlined. Attached to the kitchen is the open family room with more stunning and relaxing views of the landscaping from high windows and tall glass French doors that open to the patio. As people walk from room to room, they admire the furnishings, art, and great outdoor views. “The homeowners spend a lot of of time in this space,” says Zack. “It feels so natural and inviting.” A small powder room with a dark vanity

that follows the same dark-and-white theme is also located in this area. The tiny room is distinguished with a mirror highlighted by a black surround on the white wall. Another stylish accomplishment for Zack is the master bedroom and bath. The clean limestone floor continues, and the bed furnishings are a delicate white with brown lines that look embroidered. Lamps are simple yet elegant, and the room has the look of a fancy hotel suite in a foreign land. The spacious master bath, which Zack created by combining two existing bathrooms, is a masterpiece, with two gorgeous atriums outside the windows that provide more park-like views for the couple when they are relaxing. “This space is open and simple, with more limestone flooring to maintain continuity,” Zack points out. “It is simply gorgeous and lends itself to a place where they can relax in the tub or just gaze out of the window into fresh, wonderful greenery.” The entire project was completed in six months and, needless to say, the owners were delighted with their new home, especially the designer’s creativity and ability to understand and execute their vision. “We all love this house,” says Zack. “Not only is it located in a fine area of Weston, the space offers the owners a home they can’t wait to come home to.” inWESTON MAGAZINE

break
without breaking THE bank By Dr. Mary Jo Almeida-Shore
While many would argue that “family vacation” is an oxymoron, there actually are a few places that offer exciting, entertaining and relaxing activities for the whole family, without depleting the college funds. The Florida Keys and Club Med Sandpiper are excellent “island” getaways for Florida families that don’t require a plane ticket. Washington, D.C., the premier family travel destination, is a short, inexpensive flight away, with loads of affordable hotel accommodations, and the history of the world and our nation at your fingertips. The best part? Most of D.C.’s worldfamous museums and attractions are absolutely free. We’ve hand-picked a few of our favorite, tested-and-true recommendations for when you’re planning your next family adventure.
The Keys are the place to head whether you’re seeking total relaxation or water-based fun. BELOW: The laid-back luxury of Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada.
The Florida Keys The place where the rest of the world vacations, the Florida Keys is just steps away from home. Each distinct in its unique atmosphere and offerings, both the Cheeca Lodge & Spa and Hawks Cay resorts are two perfect places to unwind, get up-close and personal with marine life, enjoy fine dining and create special memories with the family.
Cheeca Lodge & Spa Dubbed the “Queen of the Florida Keys,” the luxurious Cheeca Lodge & Spa is set on a 27-acre private estate in Islamorada, the Sportfishing Capital of the World. This gorgeous tropical paradise boasts classic Florida Keys architecture, chic West Indies décor, and “barefoot elegance”—a term that was coined at Cheeca. The property houses 212 spacious guestrooms, suites and bungalows, including 62 enormous Premier Oceanfront and Island View Suites that offer panoramic ocean or is-
land views, expansive private lanais, open-air hot tubs on the terrace and posh amenities. But while Cheeca is luxurious and extremely romantic, the fun activities it offers make it a great spot for the whole family. Kids of all ages will delight in the resort’s signature 525foot wooden fishing pier, which extends so far into the ocean you’ll feel as though you’re on a fishing expedition. Throughout the day and night, anglers can be seen pulling up snapper, nurse sharks, barracudas and more. Cheeca provides complimentary fishing rods and sells bait to set you up for hours. (Highlight: feeding the friendly pelicans who hang out on the pier, excitedly waiting to snag your catch.)
The resort also offers guests complimentary kayaks and paddleboards for hours of fun on the water. Available for rental are two cuttingedge clear canoes, catamarans and paddle boats. Those who prefer marine encounters in the water will enjoy Cheeca’s saltwater snorkeling lagoon, with room for only fish that are smaller than its human guests. Cheeca’s also got a children’s environmental activity program, bicycles with which to explore the island and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. possibly the best in the Keys—and a unique selection of Japanese sake and wine. Atlantic’s Edge is elegant, with a seasonal fine-dining menu of fresh local seafood, prime steaks and organic local produce. Mornings, don’t miss the crab eggs Benedict or the breakfast buffet, which is also a bargain. For casual, traditional Italian fare, Limoncello serves cuisine inspired by the Tuscan countryside. The expanded Spa at Cheeca includes 11 treatment rooms, which join the poolside cabanas, Tahitian-style Spa Lagoon, adultsonly lap pool and an oceanfront tiki hut for al fresco treatments. There are also shops and a rooftop bar to enjoy and a conference center. It comes as no surprise that Cheeca

Hawks Cay
Situated on Duck Key, Hawks Cay, home to NBC Sports’ Saltwater Experience, offers fullscale fun in the sun for the entire family, with virtually every water-related activity imaginable. In addition to a full-service marina, Hawks Cay’s guests have access to some of the world’s finest diving, snorkeling and fishing sites; kiteboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, guided Jet Ski tours, SNUBA® and kayaking in the lagoon. Dolphin lovers will rejoice in the onsite Dolphin Connection, home to four bottlenosed Atlantic dolphins, the only resortbased program of its kind where guests can interact and swim with dolphins in their natural environment, with free public viewing of trained dolphins. Preferred Hotels & Resorts Lifestyle Collection member and AAA Four-Diamond Award-winner Hawks Cay boasts a total 427 villas and hotel rooms, several restaurants, a saltwater lagoon, five swimming pools, and an award-winning spa. The recently renovated resort has added a number of amenities including luxury cabanas at the Tranquility Pool in The Oasis, a new adultsonly area for leisure and relaxation, chic penthouses and family suites with a built-in sleeping area for children. The culinary experience at Hawks Cay in-

cludes a variety of dining options. Signature restaurant Alma features Nuevo Latino cuisine, and the soon-to-open Angler & Ale will serve fresh seafood, craft beer and the resort’s signature hook-and-cook experience. There are also several casual eateries at the resort. Coral Cay, the adventures and activities center for kids and teens, is home to the Pirate Ship Pool, complete with slides, tunnels and water shooting cannons. Babies and
toddlers can splash around and explore the zero-entry shallow pool while older siblings enjoy the ship. Camp Hawk (ages 5-12), the game room for teens (ages 13-17) and babysitting for infants, keeps children busy while parents relax. Camp Hawk offers organized snorkeling, scavenger hunts and dockside fish feedings, just to name a few.
The words “Club Med” likely conjure images of far-flung locales on Caribbean islands, but Club Med Sandpiper Bay could arguably be considered “right in your own backyard”. Located just north of Weston, within easy reach of St. Augustine, Miami and Orlando, and the only Club Med in the United States, Sandpiper allows locals to experience the unique all-inclusive Club Med experience without need of a passport or airline ticket. With a plethora of recreation options for parents and children, the resort affords guests the opportunity to be as adventurous or relaxed as they’d like. There’s even a L’Occitane spa on site for parents to enjoy while the kids are on the flying trapeze at circus school, sailing, paddle-boarding or fishing on the lake, or improving their volleyball game with a trained professional. The little ones can also participate in a fun-filled summercamp like experience at the kids’ club. Club Med Sandpiper Bay is best known for its dedicated sports academies offering guests of all ages and skill sets an opportunity to up the ante on their tennis, volleyball and golf games. All family members can also take advantage of the onsite fitness/wellness facilities alongside expert instructors. Also noteworthy is Club Med’s abundant and varied world-class cuisine, available at all times of the day, served in three restaurants (the white chocolate bread is the stuff of legend). Families will also delight in the nightly entertainment, as the talented GOs put on a show every night followed by dancing, which comes in handy to work off all of that delicious food. Free-flowing cocktails, which are part of the all-inclusive packages, make for an extra fun and relaxing vacation. Starting this summer, Sandpiper will be offering free golf green fees at Sandpiper Bay’s 18-hole course for guests ages 18+ and free group lessons for all levels. The offer runs from May 1 to October 31.

Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C., home to the most important and historic sites, monuments, museums and artifacts in the world, is pretty much a must when it comes to family vacations. Teeming with attractions, families could spend days or weeks exploring the city, depending on their pace, and never experience a dull moment. Bonus: Most of Washington’s attractions are free, including all 19 Smithsonian museums and the Library of Congress, the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, The White House and all of the monuments. And most are accessible without advance planning, except for the White House and Capitol tours, which should be booked well in advance by contacting your local Senate or House representative. While teenagers will be disappointed to learn that the National Mall is not an actual shopping mall, they will be dazzled by all of the cool exhibits contained in the major Smithsonian museums and the sheer magnitude of our Nation’s monuments and memorials. From the first signs of human life, to the Hubble telescope, to Neil Armstrong’s spacecraft, the Columbia, to meteorites containing every element of the periodic table, a visit to the Smithsonian museums trumps a decade in the classroom. Spend a day or two exploring the Mall, stroll toward the Washington Monument and keep walking past the reflecting pool all the way to the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. Take time to visit the World War II Memorial and walk around the Tidal

Basin to the Jefferson Monument. Also visit the Vietnam and Korean Memorials. Worth a visit, Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, a short subway ride from the Mall, is poignant and impressive, especially the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Teens, especially, will enjoy a trip to Georgetown; the university is breathtaking and the hip, neighboring town is chock full of terrific shops, restaurants and bars. The National Cathedral and National Zoo are close to one another. The top highlights of the zoo are the giant panda bears, with whom you can get up close and personal in an intimate viewing pavilion. Four year-old Bao Bao loves to perform, and her baby brother, 4-month-old Bei Bei, will make you want to take him home. The Capitol Hill Hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of historic landmarks and sites, including the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and the National Mall. The hotel offers complimentary breakfast every morning and is located a couple of blocks from several excellent dining options. Two favorites
include Goodstuff Eatery and We, the Pizza, both owned and operated by celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn. A favorite restaurant, filled with pomp and history (including Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting trophies), is the Old Ebbitt Grill, located near the White House. Another must is Founding Farmers, a topnotch local restaurant chain with comfort foods and signature desserts that will delight the whole family. For a fun adults’ night on the town, the 18th Street Lounge features multiple venues with various genres of music playing set within a three-story brownstone, complete with a rooftop bar. Quarter + Glory is one of D.C.s newest bars, with a chic, sophisticated, New York vibe. Consider taking the Big Bus Tour for a convenient way to see and visit Washington D.C.’s top attractions without wearing out your soles or worrying about transportation. Spend a day or two hopping on and off the tour bus, getting acquainted with the city, then visit the top museums and attractions on your own. ask THE experts If friends, family and gift guides all fail to inspire when it comes to gifts for Mother’s and Father’s Day, consult the experts. (Actually, we did it for you.)
By Carolina Vargas Photographs by Ricardo Mejia
The most important thing to remember when choosing a gift for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day is that it isn’t all about you—selecting the perfect present means coming up with an idea that speaks to the person receiving the gift. “I think the most important thing to do is ask a lot of questions in order to find out as much as we can about the recipient such as favorite color, daily style, and current jewelry,” says Tracey Dikes, co-owner of Weston Jewelers. “These tend to be the best indicators as to what the perfect gift will be.” Tracey, along with her co-owner and husband, Ed, know of what they speak when it comes to gifting. “I like to consider the type of occasion and the jewelry the recipient may presently have in order to best mix and match later on,” he says. “Most men, for example, tend to already gravitate towards the things they know their wives would like. It’s a matter of asking the right questions to help guide them toward the best choice. We want to ensure that our customers leave satisfied as we are in the business of making people happy.” And that means everyone, regardless of budget range. As Tracey says, “We do a great job at offering great selections and varieties at all different price points for anyone’s budget starting from $150. These can include more affordable gifts, such as the Montblanc pen, to the more luxurious watches seen here.” Weston Jewelers, 1728 Main St., Weston, 954-389-7990; www.westonjewelers.com.

ith the insane and non-stop proliferation of restaurants across South Florida showing no sign of slowing down, it becomes more and more difficult for restaurateurs, chefs and space designers to come up with ways to impress diners. If the competition was tough here in this industry ten years ago, today it’s positively ferocious. So when a dining destination—which is what Burlock Coast is—stands out among the crowd, it’s worth noting. And requires a visit. It’s not the first restaurant where you’re going to hear the terms “farm-to-table” and “responsible sourcing,” nor will it be the last. But this spot nestled at the base of the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale takes the concept above and beyond that, because in and of itself it is all about our community. The location is prime—oceanfront, with a huge terrace containing tables and a bar perfect for people watching

and relaxing while you savor Chef Gavin Pera’s amazing offerings—and casual and comfortable while at the same time being stylish and cool. The space was redone to the tune of a multimillion-dollar renovation after the hotel’s last restaurant there, Via Luna, closed last summer; Burlock opened in November and immediately garnered rave reviews. Sometimes that happens, then the novelty wears off and the warm fuzzies grow cold; in this case, it turns out, what initially sparked that passion in diners continues to fan the flames. That’s because everything from the cocktails, so painstakingly developed and crafted to showcase the restaurant’s rum collection, to which an entire room inside is devoted, to the smoky, delicious Panther coffee to the irresistible crusty bread courtesy of local rock star Zak the Baker (Zak Stern in real life) to the just-caught-fresh seafood—whether savored raw in Pera’s unique ceviche recipe containing Funky Buddha beer and shishito

peppers or divinely seared, as was the hog snapper served atop a red quinoa salad we chose on the night we most recently visited—is consistently outstanding. It may be difficult to make a choice from the menu, where you may be stumped as to whether the best idea for an appetizer is the Artisanal Cheese & Charcuterie with nuts, jam and mustard, a salad of Sea Salt Roasted Beets with candied walnuts, goat cheese and citrus, or the oysters of the day—East Coast, West Coast, you can’t go wrong with these little gems doused with tangy citrus champagne mignonette. Sandwiches pop with flavors thanks to some decidedly, wonderfully unorthodox combinations; the Bc Burger is made from ground brisket and dressed up with rum bacon jam, arugula pistou, mt. tam cheese and marinated tomatoes and The Grouper is tempura-ed, then tucked between slices of raisin brioche with creamy lime
slaw and hot sauce. “Plates,” or “entrées,” are simple in concept yet anything but when they hit the palate—from simply grilled, meticulously crusted fish of the day served atop garden greens to skirt steak with red onion, bleu cheese, blistered cherry tomatoes and arugula. And while key lime pie may seem like a pedestrian choice when dining out in Florida—perhaps it is, when you compare it to some of the bizarre concoctions chefs are fashioning as desserts these days—one that is simple and perfectly rendered is not easy to find. Or at least, it hasn’t been, until now. Go to Burlock Coast hungry. Leave—with your arms full of goods from their on-site marketplace—a little fatter, but happy. Varicose Veins: More Than a Cosmetic Concern Varicose veins might appear to be a cosmetic issue, but they can cause problems beyond just making your legs look unattractive. Even if Mehrdad Farid, MD you aren’t bothered by your varicose veins, you should be aware of some problems that can occur if you ignore them too long. There are several different treatment options for troublesome varicose veins, ranging from minimally invasive heat treatments to traditional ligation. Ask your doctor which is best for you. Causes of varicose veins Your veins have valves that keep the blood flowing and prevent blood from backing up. When these valves fail, blood pools and increases pressure on the vessel walls, causing the blood vessels to distort and balloon out. Large or numerous varicose veins can make your legs ache.
In addition to genetic predisposition, being overweight or standing for many hours at a time increases your risk for developing varicose veins. Varicose veins can be a side effect of pregnancy as well. Problems that can occur • Malfunctioning valves in your veins allow the blood to stagnate. This can spell trouble because when blood pools, it can clot. “I use the analogy of a running stream versus a stagnant pond,” says Mehrdad Farid, MD, a vascular medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “This can cause phlebitis, a superficial clot that can be painful, but usually not life threatening.” • Eventually, blood pooling or stagnating in the blood vessels can also cause ulcers and sores to develop. Venous stasis ulcers, or open sores, form when drainage of fluid is inadequate. This type of ulcer can be difficult to heal and may reoccur frequently, if left untreated. • When extensive varicose veins hinder the circulation in your legs, you can develop edema, or swelling caused by resulting

fluid buildup. When this condition exists, you are more at risk for fungal and bacterial infections of the surrounding tissue and area. • Finally, when veins become distended with blood and weakened from chronic pressure on them, they can hemorrhage, or burst, and cause bleeding. Treatment options “There are three methods to decrease venous pressure conservatively: leg elevation when appropriate, pumping your feet or exercise, or external compression with stockings. Should the conservative measures fail, you should seek consultation for further treatments,” explains Dr. Farid. Small veins can be treated with outpatient procedures such as, sclerotherapy (vein injection), laser or radiofrequency treatment. However, in more severe cases, patients may require more aggressive treatment, which might include vascular surgery. For a consultation with Dr. Farid or another vascular medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic Florida, call 866.293.0621, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

2016 Cadillac CT6 CTS-V
Cadillac CT6
Cadillac CTS-V
Grace or pace? We check out Cadillac’s two flagship sedans.
By Steve Siler
C
adillac loves to remind us that it was once considered the “Standard of the World” for luxury automobiles. But that was a very long time ago, and the extravagant, floaty cushmobiles that Cadillac built at the time are no longer in vogue per se. After decades languishing in the doldrums of GM’s dark ages, Cadillac has reemerged with products that dispense with gratuitous flash and retain the marque’s creature comforts while chasing the best Germany can serve up in terms of performance and handling. With not one but two sedans reaching into the $90K range, Cadillac has never been more ambitious. Which is best? Well, that depends on whether you like your four-doors fancy or ferocious.
2016 CT6: THE FANCY ONE
After many years without a proper flagship sedan, Cadillac installed the all-new CT6 earlier this year at the top of its lineup. While its mid$50K starting price for the four-cylinder model (!) is rather cheap for a “flagship” luxury sedan, the higher-spec versions, such as the $88,460 twin-turbo V-6 Platinum model, seem fully deserving of the designation. As spacious inside as a short-wheelbase 2015 BMW 7-Series, the CT6 is truly full-size, yet its styling is dignified and understated. No

rocket-age tailfins or chrome-drenched body addenda here; the flashiest elements on the CT6 are its tastefully detailed grille and width-enhancing vertical LED running lamps. Even the Cadillac crest has been stripped of its wreath. The CT6’s interior is Cadillac’s best in memory. You’ll sink into creamy, contoured leather seats while coming face-to-face with a wide, tall dashboard that’s none too techno-shy with TFT gauges and an infotainment system operable via a huge touchscreen or a touchpad in the armrest. The options list includes reclining and massaging rear seats, slim entertainment monitors that motor up from behind the front headrests, a 34-speaker Bose Panaray sound system, and much more. And all is rendered in a resplendent combination of wood, chrome trim, and in some models, carbon fiber—exactly how a Cadillac should look and feel in 2016.
wheel life
There’s a $38,000 difference between the LP580-2 and the LP610-4, but either way you get a ridiculously sexy machine, each with its own advantages. To test drive and experience either vehicle for yourself, call or stop by Vera Cadillac, 300 S. University Drive, Pembroke Pines; 954-871-2630.
CT6:
While Caddys of yore were known for their heavy weight, the CT6 is extremely light, allowing the 404-hp twin-turbo V-6 to fully keep pace with far pricier V-8-powered sleds from across the pond. When the road gets curvy the Platinum model’s standard all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering keep the CT6 on its line with remarkable acuity. At no point, however, does the CT6 feel harsh, its suspension masterfully muting out impacts while allowing a bounty of road feel for the driver. Cadillac is still mulling the possibility of a sedan even larger and more premium than the CT6. Until that car arrives, this one fits the flagship bill just fine.
2016 CTS-V: THE FEROCIOUS ONE
If the CT6 is what you’d hope Cadillac would build in 2016, the $84,990 CTS-V is the Cadillac you might never expect the brand to make. Indeed, as one of the most powerful four-doors on the planet with a supercharged V-8 churning out 640 horsepower, the CTS-V makes a performance play that no one could have envisioned GM’s ole wreathand-crest division 20 years ago. Why did it go over the top with performance? Well, it’s a brave new

world for luxury customers, many of whom find it just as important to get somewhere quickly as it is to get there comfortably. Besides, power is sexy, right? So Cadillac stuffed that big motor under the hood of its mid-size CTS, slapped some gleaming carbon fiber on the body, and slammed it all down on a lowered suspension. The result is one of the quickest and nimblest sedans in the world; America’s audacious answer to the popular and sexy BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 sedans— incidentally, out-powering both. Yet the CT6 is still a Cadillac, which means that behind that racy sheetmetal is an interior full of treats, from a sophisticated infotainment system to exceedingly lovely materials such as soft leather, faux suede and of course, more carbon fiber. The seats are decidedly sporty, with thick bolsters to help keep you in place in the event you get frisky on a curvy two-laner or even a racetrack. (Yes, a Cadillac on the racetrack!) And unlike other Caddies, this cabin is no library on wheels but rather a chamber where supercharger whine and exhaust rumble play a powerful and sometimes loud duet. The CTS-V is the foil to the CT6, as feral as the other is finely tuned. Both suitable flagships for a brand seeking to restore its position of prominence in the luxury car world.

Thanks for Making Us the Best! MAGNA WINNER 6 YEARS IN A ROW 25% Year Over Year Sales Growth Audi Pembroke Pines earns the award for the sixth consecutive year since its opening in July 2009. Audi honored 91 top-performing dealerships in the U.S. with 2015 Magna Society Awards, a distinction for dealers who achieved excellent performance in 2015. To earn Magna Society recognition, dealers must demonstrate exceptional level of customer service as well as strong business performance. The Magna Society was created by Audi to identify and recognize dealerships that go above and beyond the standard business objectives and sales targets. To qualify for Magna Society status, a dealership must show that they are engaged in sales and service programs and adhere to specific business processes. Their facility and staff should also properly represent the Audi brand and culture. Congratulations to the entire team at Audi Pembroke Pines for winning the Magna Award in 2015 – a truly exceptional job!
