Terra’s Pines City Center in Pembroke Pines is 70 percent pre-leased as construction continues apace.
Terra, one of the region’s most active residential and commercial development firms, has announced a string of recently signed leases at phase one of Pines City Center, the 47-acre mixed-use development taking shape off Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines. Now 70 percent pre-leased— the tenant roster so far includes Publix, Carl’s Patio, Cooper’s Hawk, BurgerFi, Smoothie King, PizzaRev, Bento Café and The Halal Guys—demand for retail space at Pines City Center points to the community’s rising population and plans for continued residential and commercial growth. The project will unfold in two phases, with phase one composed of 200,000 square feet of Publix-anchored retail space and phase two composed of 100,000 square feet of commercial space and 385 apartments. Construction of the project’s first phase of retail is now underway, with

SUNSHINE The Dylan Schopp Sunshine Foundation hosts its annual fundraiser for suicide awareness and prevention.
The Dylan Schopp Sunshine Foundation recently hosted its second annual “Sunshine at the Park” event at Markham Park, raising more than $40,000 for suicide awareness and prevention. Over 200 people came out to this year’s festival to enjoy face-painting, bounce houses, sand art, yoga and Zumba classes, a karate demonstration and live performances by Hip Hop Kidz. Attendees signed a pledge wall where they wrote down commitments of how they plan to #SpreadTheSunshine and had the opportunity to purchase their own butterfly for a butterfly release. Dylan Schopp’s life was cut short in 2015 when he committed suicide at the age of 21; the foundation was later formed to help children and young adults in hopes of preventing such tragedies through education and public discussion. Event proceeds went to benefit suicide prevention organizations, including the HOPE Sunshine Clubs operated in partnership with Weston-based Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP). Markham Park is an important location for the Schopp family, because it was one of Dylan’s favorite spots to enjoy time outdoors, jet skiing and mountain biking with his dad. The City of Weston has a new chamber of commerce focused on building business and strengthening the community. The Weston Florida Chamber of Commerce officially launched in January 2017 after meeting with area business leaders on the need for a local Chamber of Commerce for the City of Weston. Business leaders met with Robert Goltz, President/CEO of the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce, in November to discuss options of starting an organization that represented the business community, offered programs and services of a mid- to large-size chamber and would look and operate like a stand-alone organization. After a series of meetings, a plan was made to create the Weston Florida Chamber of Commerce, a division of the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce. But the Weston Florida Chamber of Commerce was built with its own brand in mind. In February, the Chamber launched its website and a social media page on Facebook. The launch started with 20 businesses committed to a vision to serve the area’s business community; membership has continued to grow over the past few months, and now there are more than 50 members…and counting. Some of the networking opportunities that are already in place include Never Eat Lunch Alone, held the first Wednesday of each month from noon to 1:15 p.m. at area restaurants (that’s a Members Only event); the Monthly Membership Breakfast, held the third Tuesday of the month from 7:45 a.m.–9 a.m. at Rick Case Honda’s Community Room; and Weston Leaders Leads Group, every Friday from 7:45 a.m.-9 a.m. at the Weston YMCA. With Zika still impacting South Florida, and summer rains and hot temps creating a breeding ground for more mosquitoes, it’s becoming increasingly important to stay protected. Experts at Mosquito Squad, which is a national mosquito elimination company, offer some unique tips to “fight the bite.”
• Swap your scent. From perfume to scented fabric softeners and even hand cream, a wide range of fragrances are known to attract mosquitoes. Certain natural scents—including lavender, peppermint, basil, garlic and eucalyptus—repel the little suckers and can be worn as an essential oil on your skin. • Shower power. Mosquitoes are attracted to lactic acid, which humans emit when they are active. Wash your body with unscented soap immediately after exercising. • Choose your color. Mosquitoes tend to be attracted to dark colors, so it’s always better to lean toward light-colored attire when outside. When it comes to lighting, bugs are attracted to ultraviolet florescent and blue light.

Dad to Tyler, 12 “I’m the oldest of three and we grew up in Connecticut, spending summer vacations in Maine or Florida. My science desires took me into meteorology and the University of Oklahoma, where I studied and chased storms. Then, after a decade on TV in Colorado, my job brought me first to Tampa and then to Miami, where I traded tornadoes for hurricanes. My son was born the year of Charlie, Francis, Ivan and Jeanne, but it’s too early to tell if he will follow in my atmospheric shoes.”
The main difference between life before children and life after children is…. I used to be an action-and-adventure kind of guy. Between boating, scuba diving, skiing, traveling at a moment’s notice…all of that spontaneity took a break from my life once my son was born. As a single dad, it’s harder to do all of those spur-of-the-moment things, but I see a time in the not-too-distant future when my son will be old enough to be my adventure partner in crime. The greatest rewards of fatherhood are: For me, the greatest reward of fatherhood is watching my son go through all the stages of growing up. From when he would smile hearing my voice as a baby to now asking me to join him on his favorite computer game or in the pool, I love spending time with my son.
The greatest challenges of fatherhood are: Keeping my job out of my time with my son. Weather is 24/7 and never takes a break, so when it’s bad, I have to work. Spending time with my son is especially hard during hurricane season, when I spend many long days at CBS4. I think he has grown to fear hurricanes not because they may hit, but because they take my time from him. The greatest rewards of fatherhood are: Seeing my girls grow up and develop their own personalities. Getting to remember parts of my past that made me who I am and seeing the same happen to them. A huge plus is being able to feel like a kid again, playing games that I have not played in years. But the greatest of rewards I have experienced thus far is coming home after a long day and having three little girls running towards me to give me a hug and a kiss, telling me they love me and that they are glad I’m home with ear-to-ear smiles—nothing warms my heart more. The greatest challenges of fatherhood are: So far the greatest challenge is balancing a career with family. I don’t want a stranger raising my kids. I want them to be able to look back and remember me raising them, and to know I will always be there for them no matter what. I never want them to question if they come first—always. Even if the person is mean or rude, put a smile on and be nice to that person. You always will get further in life being positive than you would being negative.

I joined iFLY after a nearly 20-year career in operations for one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world. I have earned my B.A. and M.B.A. while working full time and raising our daughter. My hobbies all revolve around my daughter and vary by the season.” The main difference between life before children and life after children is…. Focus. Before Lauren was born I thought that my life was full. My wife and I felt our main focuses were based around our careers, continuing education, friends, etc. After Lauren was born, all focus went to her. Her health, protection, overall well-being and even planning her future before she could sit up. Any extracurricular activities that we were involved in ceased to exist and we dove head-first into all activities involving Lauren. The greatest rewards of fatherhood are: Unconditional love. No matter how bad life gets I know my daughter will always love me and I will always love her. It would be unrealistic to say that there won’t be any disagreements along the way, but at the end of the day our love for one another remains constant. The greatest challenges of fatherhood are: Patience. I used to have very little patience, but once Lauren was born I knew I had to develop some. We know that in order for her to grow and progress, there are times when we will take two steps forward and a few steps back. There is no true textbook to follow when raising kids, but with the great challenges that come with fatherhood there are even greater rewards. The one piece of advice he hopes his daughter takes most to heart as she goes through life: There are several, such as the golden rule of treat others the way you would want to be treated or be honest even when it is tough to do so. Probably the one piece of advice I hope she takes is live life to the fullest. Don’t settle.

Through the magic of color, designer Ivonne Suriel turned her Fort Lauderdale living space into a sophisticated yet comfortable home.

In her mission to create a living environment that combines sophistication and easy living, architect/designer Ivonne Suriel renovated her own two-bedroom plus convertible den/ two-bath condominium in downtown Fort Lauderdale to suit her lifestyle. With beautiful dual views of both a park and the city, Suriel, who hails from the Dominican Republic, replaced much of the original unit in this Mediterranean-style building, modernizing it with artistic flair. “I wanted a contemporary apartment for my family, but it had to have warmth that would last,” says Suriel, whose IS Design in South Florida and Santo Domingo specializes in interior design and planning. “I needed a balance of clean-lined sophistication with the feeling of home.” Throughout the nearly 1,600-square-foot apartment, she commissioned gray Italian porcelain flooring, added custom doors and ceilings, installed contemporary LED lighting and used light-toned wallpaper. She selected an overall neutral palette with bold pops of color coming from the art, furniture and furnishings. During the two- to three-month renovation, Suriel faced some challenges that were mostly due to the size of the apartment. But after careful examination of the architecture coupled with her desire for the look of the interior,

she worked through the issues. For example, she wanted to make the small space seem larger, so she picked the proper lighting and created custom closets with built-in organizers for storage. “We tore down divisions in the apartment, and everything else is custom created,” says Suriel, who has listed the unit for $499,000 with One Sotheby’s International Realty because her family is moving to Chicago. “We did everything we could to maximize space. Being here is like living in a hotel. We love it.” Adds Josh Dotoli of One Sotheby’s International Realty, who represents the property, “This is a unique opportunity to own a designer, turnkey condo at a great price in the booming downtown Fort Lauderdale-Las Olas area.” Suriel made sure that nothing was designed in any of the rooms that could disturb the amazing downtown and park views because a clear vision of the outdoors added to the feeling of spaciousness. Even the long, lean corridors come alive to create eye appeal. The designer collects colorful art, so both family members and guests have a great deal to see while walking through this elegant space. of the work by contemporary artists from the Dominican Republic,” says Suriel. “I also find paintings on trips to Europe and Asia and add them to my collection.” Art is used throughout the large, open public area with the kitchen and continues into the living room and dining space. For example, the living room is a technicolor dream with the dominant wall canvas painted by the designer’s brother, Hugo Suriel. “My brother painted this girl on a motorcycle for me because I love motorcycles,” she laughs. The blue-green tones in the canvas, which is located above the sofa, blend beautifully with the designer’s choice of a tranquil deep-blue, retro rug from Stepevi, the venerable Turkish carpetmaker. In a marked contrast to the taupe Roche Bobois furniture, the colors pop out and give the room texture and balance. The dining space is another wonder of contrasts, with a Carrara marble table that seats 10 and lovely Italian leather chairs. A retro, 10-light sputnik chandelier above the table incorporates gold into the polished area. And a Japanese console from an antique shop adds another layer of intrigue. “I like eclectic; I am not a purist,” admits the designer. Furthering the design theme, pops of orange from the Italian Frag bar stools situated at the kitchen island also give the dining space a shot in the arm since the rooms sit side by side and blend into one another. “The pop-up orange stools add fun and movement to both spaces,” says Suriel. The kitchen is modern, sleek, spare and contemporary with recessed lighting, Italian-style integrated customdesigned cabinetry, gray quartz countertops and a novel Dekton backsplash with Carrara marble print. The KitchenAid built-in stainless steel appliances, German Blanco undermount black composite sink and Hansgrohe faucets carry the contemporary theme throughout the room. “I like to entertain a great deal and especially love preparing Mediterranean dishes when I can because I lived in Barce-

lona for two years,” Suriel says. In the condo’s private area, the master bedroom stands out as a modern and clean-lined sanctuary in which the busy designer can relax. There is a huge bed with white linens from Restoration Hardware and a colorful canvas on the wall of little girls painted by a Haitian artist. “This is a functional space that is simple yet elegant,” says Suriel. “I used wallpaper to give it a warm look because it has to be ‘homey’, not a museum.” The tiled master bath is smart and functional with a custom sink, Hansgrohe fixtures and a Toto toilet. The shower is made of Spanish porcelain tile in a modern beige-white neutral color scheme that blends with the copper look of the wallpaper. The children’s bedrooms repeat the colors the designer used in the living room and with the hallway art. For example, her son’s bedroom is a coastal dream of light wallpaper with a lime green bedspread, a multicolor throw pillow from Pottery Barn and custom velvet drapes in vivid blue. A large canvas painted by the designer’s brother borrows the colors of the bedspread and curtains in his interpretation of blind monkeys. Ideal for a young girl, the daughter’s bedroom has pink silk drapes and a pink wall—it’s her favorite color— while Hugo Suriel’s painting of kids lying in the grass adds texture and color to the room. Two full beds are appointed with white Ralph Lauren sheets and cushions from Zara Home. The siblings share a black and white bathroom with a Spanish tile wall, geometric layout and wood floors in the same material as the rest of the apartment’s flooring, but finished in a darker tone. “This is a clean-lined bathroom with a busy wall,” laughs Suriel. “It has different patterns.” The chic, modular cabinets and vanity are Spanish, and the wall art is Hugo’s work illustrating two kids traveling on a plane. In total, the condo combines comfort with contemporary living in a bright and elegant way with zips of smashing color. The entire apartment has a clean and sophisticated look, yet it feels like a home. Notes Suriel, “There’s a balance of sophistication and elegance, but it still feels like home.”

Remember Operation, an electronic board game in which one wayward movement causes other body parts to spasm and a loud buzzer to sound?
Just like in the board game, an injured rotator cuff can wreak havoc with other body parts – and every day activities like writing and eating – because it’s the rotator cuff that allows us to lift and rotate the arm. The rotator cuff is composed of four muscles plus attached tendons and other tissue in the shoulder. It holds the arm in the joint and helps attach the humerus (long bone in the upper arm) to the elbow, neck and torso. Rotator cuff tendons can tear from age, overuse, traumatic injury, or a fall. When it is injured, even reaching for a book can be painful, and a tennis match or golf outing would be nearly impossible. Understandably, shoulder injuries used to be among the most dreaded by weekend warriors and professional athletes alike. In fact, a rotator cuff injury was often a career-ending incident in sports. “Shoulder patients can experience much quicker recovery and much less pain using the arthroscopic techniques
developed in recent years,” said Vani Sabesan, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in the upper extremities. “Today, my patients return to their preferred activities quickly.” Instead of a large incision circumventing the shoulder, Dr. Sabesan uses an arthroscope, a pencil-sized instrument with a tiny camera at the tip, to examine and repair the tissues in the joint. Recovery is quicker, and less painful when compared to an open procedure. Using arthroscopy also minimizes swelling, and allows patients to begin their post-operative rehabilitation sooner. In the last few years, other innovations have made the recovery process easier, including surgical improvements and better post-operative pain management. According to Dr. Sabesan, who is a team physician for the Florida Panthers, sutures today use new materials that do not require intra-operative knots. Overall, the procedures are less abrasive to the tissue. New, long-acting pain medications used following surgery last for 72 to 96 hours. Often patients need little or no pain medication after their initial recovery due to the new techniques.
“Prior to arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair required months of post-operative rehabilitation and many patients avoided the surgery,” said Dr. Sabesan. “Using arthroscopy, we can help our patients return to a fuller life without constant pain.” Arthroscopy can treat other ailments including shoulder instability or dislocation, torn biceps tendon, bone spur, inflammation or damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder impingement syndrome, and arthritis of the collarbone. Surgeons also use arthroscopes to treat knees, hips, ankles, elbows and wrists. lo and Alice are no longer behind the counter pouring coffee at the shiny aluminum North Miami Beach diner where Sean Connery would pop in for breakfast while in town. The casual eatery was all but boarded up until Chef Daniel Serfer and business partner Ryan Roman seized upon the opportunity to open a second location of their popular downtown oyster bar and seafood eatery, Mignonette. Appropriately dubbed Mignonette Uptown, the new restaurant retains its diner-like appeal, with elegant, understated additions, including 22-karat gold etchings on street-side windows aglow under a neon sign. Indoor pearl LED lighting over tan banquettes lends a glamorous-dining-car-inside-agrand-European-train effect while “French Quarter” copper lanterns made in New Orleans throw beautiful ambient lighting over the dining counter and its 24 tufted bar seats that span the length of the restaurant. It’s an ideal place to eat solo, with the action of the open kitchen, an oyster-shucking station and two-ice filled oyster displays creating non-stop motion. Background music changes throughout the evening with classic Beastie Boys, Luke Skywalker and Biggie Smalls morphing into Terence Trent D’Arby and some old-school jazz as the night progresses. This isn’t your grandpa’s diner. Front and center on Chef Serfer’s menu are, of course, oysters—12 different daily varieties in fact; six East Coast and six West Coast. It’s how Mignonette acquired its name, from a sauce made typically with vinegar, pepper, and herbs

and served especially with oysters. Thanks to years of experience at the downtown location, Serfer says he knows “enough not to mess with them,” letting the natural flavors of oysters shine through. Following the success of his Blue Collar and Mignonette downtown restaurants, Chef Serfer selected a stellar team, which includes Chef de Cuisine Anthony Ciancio and his only on-site pastry chef, the tremendously talented Devin Braddock, who reprises the Butterscotch Heath Bar Bread Pudding ($8) from Blue Collar, adds a daily pie to the menu ($9) and created the knock-me-down-this-is-so-delicious Nutella Milkshake with candied hazelnut and chocolate streusel ($7) in case extreme decadence is on your mind. For the rest of the menu, Serfer and his team have put together mouthwatering selections of the freshest seafood in town, artfully and creatively prepared in true mignonette style without masking natural flavors with heavy sauces. Buffalo Scallops with gorgonzola, crisp chicken skin and hot sauce ($15) have a distinctive barbecue overtone as the name would suggest, with a kick to them that will appeal to anyone walking on the spicy side. Barbecue Octopus ($16) is simply, yet flavorfully prepared and not to miss. Oysters Rockefeller ($19) are delicately prepared with herbs, butter and Pernod. The most addictive appetizer may be the Mussels, served either red (spicy tomato) or white (white wine, garlic and butter) for $17. Paired with a salad, it makes a lovely light dinner selection. Mains are divided into either “Plain” or “Fancy,” the former served simply with beurre blanc and a choice of side veggie. The Crispy Skin Snapper ($26) is sublimely delicious. “Fancy” preparations include Faroe Islands Salmon with orzo, peas, tomato and saffron broth ($29), Grilled Lamb Chops with zucchini and gruyere gratin demi-glace ($33), Branzino with fennel-potato hash and scampi pan sauce ($23), and the perennial favorite, Warm Lobster Roll on a brioche bun with butter and curly fries ($26). Light options include three types of salads (Greek, Gem Lettuce

and Caesar), all reasonably priced at $10 each, as well as a robust assortment of veggies bursting with flavor, all for $6 apiece. Don’t miss the Grilled Peaches with peanuts and vinaigrette. Although it’s listed in the vegetable column, it could almost be a dessert (if you have enough willpower to forgo the Nutella Milkshake). One new addition by chef Daniel and his “crew” is the Cruise Ship Special, a four-course menu that includes Shrimp Cocktail, Caesar Salad with white anchovy, parmesan and grilled sourdough, a choice of grouper or prime rib, and either Butterscotch Heath Bar Bread Pudding or Nutella Milkshake for dessert, all for $39 per person. As if that’s not enough to make you do a happy dance, Mignonette just unveiled Happy Hour with “$1 oysters twice a day every day” accompanied by specially priced appetizers, $3 beer and $5 glasses of wine from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to close daily. tradition VERSUS trend Bentley’s new SUV prompts us to rethink our expectations of automotive luxury.

ith luxury SUVs competing with, and, in many cases, overtaking four-door luxury sedans in terms of raw sales, premium car makers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar and Porsche have now become premium truck makers, too. That said, Bentley’s new Bentayga is no mere truck, wrapping most of the technology and accoutrements of the similarly priced Flying Spur sedan in a taller package that exhibits proper Bentley behavior both off road and on. Does that render the Flying Spur redundant? Hardly. Both models are spectacularly fast and are hand-assembled using most of the same top-shelf materials by the same highly skilled craftsmen and women that have been building Bentleys for generations at Bentley’s Crewe, England, factory, but the experience and appeal of each is remarkably different.

Named after the Roque Bentayga, a 4,642-foot mountain peak on Spain’s Grand Canary Island, the brazenly styled Bentley Bentayga blows the ceiling off the “lux-u-vee” segment, with the most power, prestige and sybaritic delights of any SUV available today. It’s more extroverted than the Flying Spur, with throne-height seating positions affording occupants a commanding view of the world, and high-profile styling that has the world looking back. The Bentayga comes standard with many things, chief among them a bevy of bragging rights. Its standard 12-cylinder engine churns up no less than 600 hp, directed to all four wheels to ensure adequate traction.

This makes the Bentayga one of the two most powerful SUVs ever, second only to the comparatively crude, 621-hp Mercedes-AMG G65. However, with its 0-60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds, according to Car and Driver (one of the other outlets I serve—full disclosure), the Bentley is by far the quicker of the two. Just as impressive is its 187-mph top speed, making it the fastest SUV in the world. You don’t have to hammer the Bentayga, however, to appreciate the creamy ride enabled by its computer-controlled air suspension that also eradicates lean in turns. Those air springs can also raise the vehicle offroad for a maximum ground clearance of 9.2 inches, or lower it when

parked to facilitate loading of persons, pups, or procurements from a Saturday shopping spree. While few Bentayga drivers are likely to explore its top speed or risk scratching its multi-layered lacquer paint (which for a price, can be ordered in whatever color you choose), most will appreciate the Bentayga’s unbridled opulence, which remains unmatched among SUVs (at least until Rolls-Royce’s planned crossover arrives next year). Bentley’s “if it looks real, it is real” mantra is full effect, with lustrous wood, buttery hides and gleaming matte or polished metals. Get the four-place seating with its second-row center console for a full, first-class effect. At $235,525 (delivered) to start and top-end models crossing the $300K threshold, the world’s fastest and most decadent SUV is also the most expensive, another boon to braggarts, if a rather crass thing to bring up in conversation. That said, it should be assumed that Bentley drivers have money to spend, and it’s somewhat reassuring to know that this particular display of wealth contains so much substance behind it.

Bentley’s Flying Spur sedan is many things, but hard-to-figure-out is not one of them. It’s a classic Bentley sedan, with a swept-back fascia, four low-set headlamps, a mesh grille and a long cabin that stretches back to a tapering tail. Chrome encircles the windows and appears in a few other places, but next to the bold Bentayga, the Flying Spur is subtle, a muscular and sleek saloon with understatement that’s a statement unto itself. If you’re going to be chaffeured in one of these, the Flying Spur’s more relaxed, cosseting and private cabin makes it the clear choice. Materials are equally splendid, but only the Flying Spur offers quartzite and slate—that’s right, stone!—trim in addition to the longstanding choices in veneer trim, including engine-turned or brushed aluminum, piano black lacquer, or lustrous, mirror-matched wood. As with its SUV counterpart, the Spur’s glove-soft cowhides are sourced from herds that have been protected from biting insects and barbed-wire fences, but our favorite aspect of the Spur’s cabin, as with all Bentleys, is the infusion of warmth from those barely perceptible variations in the stitching, piping, and upholstery gathers, each offering evidence that it was tailored by an actual human being. Dynamically, the low-slung Flying Spur feels a bit more planted than

the Bentayga, so drivers may feel somewhat more confident braving speeds at or above triple digit levels, which are eminently attainable regardless of whether it has one of the 500–521-hp V-8s or the 616–626hp 12-cylinder engines under the “bonnet.” All models attain freeway speeds in well under five seconds on their way to top speeds between 183 and 202 mph. Interestingly, V-8 models feel a bit livelier, with less weight over the front wheels and their delicious exhaust notes. Some can be a tad firm, however, even in the air suspension’s softest setting, however, so reclining rear seaters would be advised to keep a lid on their steaming cups of Earl Gray. Priced from $206,725, the Flying Spur and Bentayga are priced right atop each other. Which is best, the traditional sedan or the trend-driven truck? Bentley has proved it’s brilliant at both.
