Gulfstream Park adds more attractions just in time for summer-fun days.

There are three new places to head to the next time you’re looking for ways to amuse yourself during the lazy days of summer: PlugIN, a music and entertainment destination; Elby, a leader in the emerging pedal-assisted e-bike market; and Color Me Mine, a paint-your-own-pottery studio, are all open at Gulfstream Park. In case you’re not familiar, PlugIN has 18 upscale karaoke rooms and digital catalogs containing more than 35,000 songs in multiple languages, all with the latest in audio and visual lighting technologies. Private rooms and in-room dining make it perfect for celebrations or nights out with friends. Elby, which opened earlier this year, offers up pedal-assist hybrid bikes that are intuitive and versatile and bound to inspire you to get moving. The Gulfstream Park showroom is the first physical location for the brand and offers personal demonstrations to experience the state-of-the-art bikes firsthand. And Color Me Mine lets creative types choose from hundreds of ceramic shapes and dozens of paint colors to design their original masterpiece, then leave the glazing and firing to them. FOR THE KIDS

Feeding South Florida fights childhood hunger here at home.

paying it forward

Fact: more than 260,000 kids in South Florida don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That’s why Feeding South Florida is continuing its Summer Hunger Ends Here Campaign with their Summer Hunger Ends Here Community Breakfast on July 12 at the Signature Grand in Davie. During the event, Feeding South Florida will honor its Partner Agency of the Year in each county it serves (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties) as well as outstanding volunteer leaders who continually serve and better

El Dorado Furniture’s 50 Years/50 Families Community Relations Campaign helps those who help others. As part of its 50th Anniversary, El Dorado Furniture officially launched the start of its “50 Years/50 Families Community Relations Campaign” with a kick-off event in January at its original location on SW 8th Street in Miami. As part of their ongoing mission to give back, the company is changing the lives of 50 underprivileged families in the community by providing them with the primary essentials of home furnishings. “When you see someone who needs helps, it touches you. There’s something magical that happens when you give back, especially in the community, that has made us what we are today,” says Pedro A. Capo, Chief Operations Officer of El Dorado Furniture. “Every time you help somebody, it doesn’t just touch the lives of the people who you’re helping—it touches the lives of everyone on your team.” One such family is The Herrera family. After raising their daughter and son, who are now in their 20s, Ruth and Raul Herrera adopted Ruth’s cousin’s baby daughter, Lesly, who was born in the Dominican Republic with cerebral palsy. They brought the child to the U.S., where she could receive the best medical care; she was later diagnosed with West Syndrome and Chronic Lung Disease. The Herreras subsequently adopted Lesly’s brother, Alan, at birth; now 5, Alan has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and suffers from severe aggressive behavior caused by the autism. Thanks to Ruth’s caring and compassion, both children are in a better situation. But the Herreras have been challenged financially due to the situation. For that reason, the family was gifted with furniture from El Dorado. “For a family that goes above and beyond to help these children, we try to do what we can as a charity to provide them with some moments of fun but can’t financially provide them with some of the necessities of living,” says Capo. “We don’t know of a more deserving family to receive a gift than this one.”

their communities. Feeding South Florida has launched its Summer Hunger Ends Here campaign with a community wide Sort-A-Thon in both their facility locations (Pembroke Park and Boynton Beach). As the campaign continues, it gives Feeding South Florida the ability to provide more children with the nourishment they need to stay healthy, grow strong, do well in school and thrive at home. SAVE YOUR SKIN

A revolutionary nonsurgical treatment called Superficial Radiotherapy makes cutting out skin cancers unnecessary.

treat yourself to a daily retreat Thermae Retreat, that is— and feel yourself decompress in no time.

This is not a spa. I repeat: this is not a spa. Thermae Retreat in Fort Lauderdale was created by owner Kelly Doyle as a daily refuge where locals can disconnect, relax their mind, detox their bodies in saunas and benefit from preventative or holistic treatments. Doyle discovered the benefits of saunas, especially infrared, during a month-long trip to Europe. “About three weeks into my daily sauna experience, my friend looked at me and asked, ‘What are you thinking about?’ And for the first time, I could answer, ‘Absolutely nothing.’ My head was completely clear. I came back a very different person,” says Doyle about what prompted her to open a sanctuary to help others deal with stress. Your experience begins in the Move Room, where you’ll jump on a mini-trampoline to promote lymphatic drainage and shake on a vibration machine to boost circulation, then move on to the core of Thermae, the Finnish and infrared saunas, to detox the skin—and end with quiet time in the Meditation Room. “People have forgotten how to be present and relax. We teach people how to be still,” says Doyle. You can also indulge in organic facials, dry scrubs, sound and crystal therapies and cupping massages. Memberships start at $109 a month and that includes daily use of the facility. Doyle recently expanded into Delray Beach (members can enjoy both locations) and has plans to open another Thermae in western Broward County by the end of the year. Thermae Retreat, 604 S. Skin cancer is always top of mind in South Florida, and if you’ve ever had a cancerous spot, you know all the cutting (and scarring) from surgery can be just as scary as the diagnosis. Now, there’s a new, nonsurgical treatment called Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) for the removal of non-melanoma skin cancers. SRT uses lowenergy radiotherapy to penetrate just below the surface of the skin to alter the cancer cell’s genetic make-up and its ability to grow, which ultimately kills the cancer. “There is a 95-percent cure rate for non-melanoma skin cancers,” says Dr. Jason Green, a board-certified dermatologist who was one of the first to offer the breakthrough treatment. “This is revolutionary because it provides patients with an attractive alternative to removing their skin cancers without cutting, scarring, pain and downtime.” Dr. Green says SRT is especially suited for skin cancers on the head, nose, eyelids, lips and ears that would otherwise lead to a less-thandesirable cosmetic outcome if surgery was performed—and it’s usually covered by insurance. OMBRE TREND Beyond Yoga

Luli Fit by Luli Fama

Forget the tank top and shorts at the gym—fitness has become fashionable, and now you can be dressed to kill from the athletic courts to the yoga mat. The Miami-based production company FUNKSHION (known for producing events such as Miami Swim Week) showed off the latest trends in activewear from top brands like Beyond Yoga, Luli Fit, Michi, Shape Active and Ultracor, along with interactive wellness events, nutritional panels and fitness classes, at a four-day event called THE RETREAT Miami. This summer, keep cool (and sexy) in mesh, whether it’s a top or a head-to-toe outfit. “I think the mesh trend is making activewear more feminine,” says Luli Hanimian, founder of Miami-based company Luli Fit. “Mesh styles are comfortable, breathable and, most importantly, stylish. They can be worn to the gym over a sports bra, out and about layered over a tank, and for a night out, you can pair it with your favorite bralette.” When it comes to leggings or sports bras, take a cue from hair trends and choose an ombre style—and slouchy “joggers” are hot to trot, whether you’re really jogging, or just jaunting to Happy Hour.

SHEILA WOLDENBERG Early Childhood Director, Temple Dor Dorim WESTON What does the position of Early Childhood Director entail? It involves hiring and managing staff, creating policies, communicating with the parents, placing children with the right teacher, the daily operation of the school, putting all programming on the school calendar, calendar set up, budgeting the program, marketing, teacher evaluation, teacher agreements, staff meetings, ordering supplies and more. I have worked at the school for 18 years and the last several years as assistant director. When the director left, I was offered the job. What are the most important aspects of education to address for students in that age group? Children in preschool need to have the opportunity to explore and learn through play. They need to be active and learn through hands-on activities. Social development, language development, small and large motor development and intellectual development are the primary focus for preschool. What do you think is at the heart of Dor Dorim that sets it apart from other schools? We have incredible teachers! They are loving and dedicated to the field of education. All of our teachers are trained and certified. The children also experience different programs that enrich their learning… snow day, truck day, bike safety day, community helper’s day, farm day, gardening and a multicultural curriculum. We also have a dual-language program beginning in the fall. What are some of the different or special programs for each category of students that they aren’t likely to have access to at traditional schools in South Florida? This year we have started a dual-language program for Pre-K. The children will be learning the first half of the day in English and the second part in Spanish. All children are exposed to Hebrew, English and Spanish. Our special programs are sports, music, Spanish, Judaics and yoga, library and gardening. We have many special activities throughout the year…challah making, shofar making, farm day, senior citizens visit to have Thanksgiving with the students, oil making, snow day, bike day, truck day, BSO/Community helpers week. In addition to a topnotch academic experience, what are the traits that Temple Dor Dorim students are encouraged to develop? In our curriculum we teach Jewish values…acts of loving kindness, respect for ourselves and community, giving back to others, and respect for parents, taking care of our world and community and manners. BUDDY EVANS Executive Vice President, YMCA of South Florida WESTON YMCA FAMILY CENTER For those who are unaware, explain the Y’s STEM program. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) has been recognized as being deficient throughout the school systems in the country. This phenomenon is further heightened by the fact that economically challenged families and women are not encouraged to pursue STEM Training. Yet there continues to be a void in exposing our young children to the STEM disciplines. Currently 7,500 open IT jobs in Broward County cannot be filled because of unavailable qualified personnel to fill them. These jobs typically start at $50K-plus. By 2020 there will be over two million jobs nationwide that will be unfilled. The alternatives are to leave them unfilled, ship them overseas or bring in foreign nationals to fill the void. A better solution is to begin tapping into the available resources of the economically challenged and our female population to create a pool of available resources thereby creating a win/ win for our kids and the country. We have these untapped resources, and job opportunities waiting to be filled: a perfect marriage. The Y’s objective is to provide early exposure and interest (grades 2 through 6) in these disciplines and provide a platform with which to continue the student’s STEM education through high school and beyond. It sounds like it’s a program that is truly in sync with the times. Do kids who attend learn through recreation, or is it more of an academicoriented program? Both. Our kids learn how to write basic code through a program developed by Carnegie Mellon. It allows the student to write basic programs using a process called Scratch Coding. The second part is using a program developed by LEGO and MIT in which the student builds programs and operates robots. What advantages do children have who attend something like STEM Camp end up having as opposed to those who don’t? Hopefully, we will have stimulated interest that will carry through to IT careers. This type of education is not the best way, it is the only way to build the homegrown pools of people that will meet the needs of the country while creating meaningful jobs that would not typically be available to our disadvantaged and female population. Who are the counselors and/or instructors for this program and are they specially trained? The overall management of the program is provided by one of our employees who was previously a primary education principal, Angie Miller. The day-to-day teaching is provided by Angela Ashley, who is a nuclear physicist by trade but has taught science and math for the past 10-plus years at Cypress Bay High School. She is also the sponsor of the national champion robotics competition. She utilizes two assistants to deliver the requisite training. Marty Goldenberg, Board Member and Chairperson of our Education Committee, provides consulting and oversight services to this and other programs as we plan to expand our education services to include tutoring for math and science through High School; a drone program, internet proficiency for our seniors and more. We also have two junior counselors we have hired that were or are students in the Cypress Bay High School STEM program. What has been the response to this program thus far, from both the campers and the parents? The response has been overwhelmingly positive from both. Thus far we have filled 50 of the available 80 slots. We will probably have to expand our capacity to up to 120 to accommodate demand. The program would not have been possible for the Y to offer without the generous support of our donors: Milner Technology, Dr. Moshin Jaffer and Samsung. Because of their financial contributions, we were able to purchase 30 laptops and 10 LEGO robots. For more information, visit ymcasouthflorida.org.

J. DAVID ARMSTRONG, JR. President, Broward College In the 10 years you’ve been with Broward College, the school’s become one of the top community colleges in the country. When you first arrived, what did you feel should be your first order of business to improve and strengthen the college overall? The impact our college system has on the workforce and the economy is often underestimated. When I was appointed, my first goal was to address the misconception that Broward College should be a last resort for the pursuit of higher education. Previously, it was seen as the option for those who did not qualify for, or could not afford to attend, the institution of their choice. During my first two years, we worked to change that perception. This involved not only a name change but improving our programs and services. The approach included streamlining courses, adding new areas of study and working with local businesses to align our curriculum with their human resource needs. We actively engaged the community in a number of areas. Today, Broward College ranks highly not just within the Florida College System (FCS) but across the nation. This year, we were honored by the Aspen Institute as a College of Distinction, officially validating us one of the top three community colleges in the United States. What would you consider to be some of the most important changes or implementations you’ve made, that have made the most impact thus far? First, let me say that the successes we have achieved are not only the results of my effort but of a great team of executives, academic leaders, faculty, and administrative staff. Our primary goal is the success of our students and all our measures are geared towards that. This means keeping abreast of academic trends and job market demands while remaining affordable and accessible to anyone who wishes to pursue an education. We have continually been at the forefront of academics, including launching 12 in-demand bachelor’s degrees and restructuring our educational paradigm into a much more student-centered model called Pathways. The program guides our students from the point of acceptance to selecting the right courses and programs to achieve their academic and career objectives. We also have kept tuition affordable by accepting challenges from Governor Rick Scott, like the 10K Degree Challenge and transitioning to online open resources to keep textbook costs low, and we’ve brought creativity to the approach of education through expanding our online program and offering blended courses to accommodate busy schedules. We also have strengthened our community relationships through targeted events such as our annual Speaker Series and Village Square panel discussions. Volunteerism is another fabric of our culture, with signature endeavors like the MLK Day of Service and lending support to a wide variety of nonprofits. We also foster business development through two innovative programs: Business Incubator and Accelerator. What would you say have been some of your more challenging objectives, and how did you go about overcoming those obstacles? The College has multiple campuses and centers and a diverse student population, which made streamlining our plans and activities an initial challenge. To address the issues, we implemented a number of measures that have proven very effective. We established weekly GOAL calls, where departments across the College report ongoing initiatives and share ideas of best practices. We have increased our communication with faculty and staff and provide ways to garner feedback from students so they can help us serve them better. Another challenge remains the declining budget from our Legislature. Each fiscal year, we are faced with limited resources to accomplish all the projects we would like to implement for our students and the community. In spite of this, with the help of our dedicated faculty and staff, we manage to develop annual spending plans that put our stu-

dents first. Our priorities continue to remain focused on improving the student experience by enhancing opportunities to successfully enroll, graduate and achieve employment. Aside from topnotch academics, what do you consider to be other factors crucial to an excellent college experience? The college experience is far more than what is taught in the classroom. Every higher-education institution should strive to produce graduates who have been afforded the chance for personal development and civic engagement. This transitions our students into responsible and active citizens. They must be motivated to get involved in student government, sports, volunteering and philanthropy, cultural presentations, and if possible, study abroad. After all, college is a time to broaden your horizons and build real-life experiences. What sets the Broward College experience—as opposed to other community colleges—apart for students? At Broward College, our academic programs are ranked among the best. We have a number of student support strategies and extracurricular activities, which supplement the classroom experience. Our Academic Success Centers, advising teams, specialized tutoring, and mentorship supports the academic experience. Additionally, our Career Centers create partnerships with the business community to provide students with valuable work experience through internships, on-thejob training, and job placement. We also have a rich student life network that offers community outreach initiatives, fun activities, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to participate in events the college hosts. For example, Broward College has been the location of political debates, including the state gubernatorial and senate debates where students sat in the audience, served as stand-ins for the camera crew, and volunteered in various roles including runners for the candidates. What else should prospective students, their parents and engaged community members know about? We are ranked as one of the top three best colleges in the nation because we are always finding new ways to improve our programs and keep our curriculum tied to the job market. In the last year alone we added eight new programs. Among them is the New Media and Communication associate degree which will start this fall. We are the only college in the state to offer the program. In fact, our art, design and film programs recently received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), making us the only one within the Florida College System (FCS) and one of only 28 colleges nationally to have this designation. We are also looking forward to welcoming the inaugural class of the Bachelor’s of Aerospace Sciences, a field which is seeing an increased demand in the region. In addition, there a number of recently completed expansion projects, such as our Aviation Annex, a 13,500-square-foot facility that houses classrooms, faculty offices and shop space at North Perry Airport; and the Automotive and Marine Center, an 18,000-squarefoot complex on our Judson A. Samuels South Campus. We are also upgrading our campuses and facilities, the most notable being the redevelopment of our downtown campus in Fort Lauderdale. Soon, it will be a state-of-the-art commercial and classroom space, creating a dynamic way of serving the community and our students while finding additional revenue to keep tuition affordable and provide improved service. Let me just add that our college is more than just the programs it offers. We recruit some of the brightest and most qualified faculty and staff, who are committed to serving our students. In fact, just a few weeks ago we were ranked on Forbes’ “America’s Best Employers 2017 – Midsized Companies” list.

DR. REBEKAH FREEMAN SCHULZE Founder, Pathway College Consulting Tell us what Pathway College Consulting is all about. I offer personalized college application services for students as they apply for college. I work with them on their college essays, as well as the entire application process. It’s a customized service, so I meet with each family to determine exactly what they need. Typically, we meet once a week until the applications are done and submitted. Some people just want help with the essay; some want a comprehensive service for essay and applications. What is your objective? Overall, my goal is to add some structure to the process, setting deadlines and offering my guidance, which reduces the stress often put on families. With me as the driving force, parents and their students aren’t fighting with each other to get everything done and meet application deadlines. This should be a fun process, while they also have time to enjoy their senior year of high school—it shouldn’t be spent fighting with parents over these applications and writing essays. It’s also highly competitive to get into schools these days, so my goal is to find the right fit for students, and then ensure they put out the absolute best application possible. I also serve as a consultant on SAT/ACT, what courses to take, how to maximize extra-curriculars, etc. What drove you to develop this service and this business? I started this business because as someone who works in Higher Education—I’m the Director of Scholar Development and a Professor at FIU—I would see many students at risk of failing out of high-level institutions. When I would start to get to know these students, it became clear they had not made the best choice of where to go for college in the first place—the “fit” was wrong. Most of them were failing not because they weren’t smart enough, but because they weren’t engaged with the institution. I decided I wanted to get involved at the root—at the admissions level—and help students through the process. Lastly, I love working with the essay. So many students start off telling me, “I don’t have a good story; I have nothing to say.” But then we start talking about their lives and they realize they have lots to say. They just need my help expressing it. It’s wonderful watching those essays evolve to a place where they are so proud of themselves. How far in the process does your assistance go with these students? This is a time of great anxiety for most students. My research is on mental health— specifically, suicide prevention. My approach to working with high school students is making sure they are excited and ready for this transition. In our weekly meetings, we talk about so much more than just the application. I want to make sure they are emotionally ready for this next big step in their lives. The application is just the beginning—and I am here to help them even after they get that first acceptance letter. BRIAN AUGUSTIN Owner, College Nannies & Tutors WESTON How did the concept for College Nannies & Tutors come about, and what makes Weston and West Broward an ideal market for its services? The company was founded by St. Paul, MN, resident Joe Keeley in 2001 while he was a student at the University of St. Thomas. Keeley took his business model nationwide in 2005 and it’s now owned by Bright Horizons. Today the College Nannies, Sitters and Tutors franchise is the largest employer of Sitters in the nation and a national resource helping busy families in 130 territories and 30 states. Western Broward County is a strong fit for a high-quality and service-oriented nanny and tutor business. Based on this type of need, I opened this Weston franchise location to serve families in Broward and NW Dade Counties. How are the tutors trained and what do they offer that independent tutors do not? Child safety and well-being are CNT’s top priorities, which is why any role model must successfully pass the following before beginning with CNT: • Application and interview process including pre-screening and personal interview steps. • Education, Legal Right to Work, Employment History and Reference Checks. • Industry-leading background checks, including Social Security traces, county/state criminal record search, national record search, sex offender registry that includes all known AKAs and aliases in all locations where candidate has resided, been employed, or attended school in the last seven years. • CNT Role Model orientation and training. • Alignment of the student’s subject needs requirements with tutors specifically trained in those subject matter areas. Are your services and/or programs affordable for all or most families? Our nanny and tutoring services are customized for all families. We recruit a “role model” for your family based on an in-depth personal interview with the family. After completion of the background and reference investigation, we set up a meeting between the selected candidate, College Nannies, and the family. Our staff is provided orientation and ongoing training. For our families, we supply ongoing support and guidance from our local team members. Our nanny services start as low as $19 per hour, with tutoring rates as low as $39 per hour for elementary students. What is the underlying philosophy at College Nannies & Tutors when it comes to what they want their students to get out of the tutoring? [Our] mission is to build stronger families. We achieve this by addressing the needs of individual families, throughout the life stages of their children. All our tutoring sessions are one-on-one and 100 percent customized for each student. We specialize in two specific areas. The first is homework help and study skills for students in grades 1 through 12. While helping to improve grade-level performance, it is just as important to build self confidence in your student and build on study skills that can be transferable to other classes. The second area is college Prep. College Tutors prepares a customized one-on-one program to help your child maximize their scores on either the SAT and ACT exam. Our program is supported with professional material and practice exams supplied to us from the Summit Educational Group. We also provide high-quality trained tutors AP exams and college-level courses. For more information, call College Nannies, Sitters, and Tutors at 954-839-9939, e-mail westonfl@collegenannies.com or visit collegenanniesandtutors.com/westonfl.

Nova Southeasten University Oceanographic Center.

It’s

the dream of many a high school student:

life on a tree-dotted college campus, wearing the school colors, strolling to classes with friends, studying in nearby cafes and letting loose in local beer joints. But for other students—those who already have responsibilities like full-time jobs, mortgages to pay, children to raise, or elderly parents to care for, that traditional college scenario is not an option. But the degree they seek still is. For practical and logistical reasons, studying for a college diploma online from home sounds extremely appealing. And with today’s diversified options, it can be a dream come true. “Online education is a natural evolution of technology,” says Dr. Michael Simonson, the head of Instructional Technology and Distance Education at Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler College of Education in Broward County. “Now we are able to do this. And some people prefer to learn at a distance.” (Out of the 23,236-member student body, more than 9,000 take online courses.) Nationally, about 25 percent of all college students take at least one online course each year. Many students today combine online options with brick-andmortar classrooms on the college campus. Students make their decision based on geography, life situation and program availability since costs between the two options are often pretty competitive. (Sometimes distance costs of online educations can be even more than residential student costs depending on the university and programs, and vice versa.) Despite interference from Florida politicians about pricing and quality of education, online programs are increasingly popular choices for public undergraduate and graduate educations, with numbers growing exponentially. Dr. Simonson says there are two distinct growth areas in online education: traditional students who demand to take classes at a distance so they can have at least a part-time job, and others who have settled in a town yet want an MBA or other advanced degree and can’t make a move. “The research is clear that the growth of online education is impacting certain groups of learners positively,” says Dr. Simonson, who has worked in this specialty area for 20 years and another 20 in the education field. “For example, older, place-bound learners who are seeking college degrees are better served because of the availability of online programs.”

University of Florida Research and Academic Center at Lake Nona.

Nova Southeastern University is a pioneer in the area of distance education, having begun the practice in 1972. It was the first U.S. university to offer graduate programs in an online format with the creation of the electronic classroom and has been offering online programs and programs with an online component since 1983. While it is possible to offer most any educational experience at a distance, it is not always appropriate. So the trend over the last decade is to offer more portions of courses, course degrees and programs at a distance, with blended offerings that fit into individual situations. At Nova, distance education includes online course delivery systems, synchronous meetings in the electronic classroom, traditional classroom instruction with a live instructor on-site, compressed interactive video and audio teleconferencing. Some programs even use a blended instructional approach. This pairs face-to-face instruction with online resources and video components. Others use an online course area exclusively. According to the influential web site politico.com, the Florida state university system could exceed its goal of having hundreds of thousands of undergraduates take almost half of their courses virtually. The university system leaders’ stated goal of delivering 40 percent of undergraduate credit hours online by 2025 is well within reach. Florida Governor Rick Scott supports online education as a way of enhancing access for students who work while they study, as he did. He even argues that fees penalize working students. (Scott is a U.S. Navy veteran who attended college and law school via the G.I. bill and also worked while completing degrees in business administration and law.) “I clearly would have done a lot of my courses online because I worked full-time during school,” he told politico.com. The University of Florida in Gainesville has a total enrollment of 54,854 in undergraduate and graduate

“Our UF online program offers a degree with real faculty member and studies that are worth a student’s time. ” Evangeline Cummings, Assistant Provost and Director of UF Online at University of Florida

programs. Of that total, 2,244 students are getting their education online, with 60.5 percent taking at least one online course and 15.8 percent of undergraduate and graduate students studying full-time online. The average age of the University of Florida online student is 28. And online programs offer a choice of 19 majors. But the state university got off to a bad start in 2013 when it entered into an online venture with Pearson, the large education publishing concern. Pearson would manage and build the university’s online program in an 11-year deal that would have netted the company a cool $186 million. But the marriage ended in 2015 when the university took online education into it own hands. Among other issues, marketing, admissions, attracting out-of-state students and advising students were less than stellar in this joint venture. So University of Florida decision makers decided to take the school out on its own. “When we terminated with Pearson, we kicked the training wheels off our bike,” says Evangeline “Evie” Cummings, Assistant Provost and Director of UF Online at University of Florida. “We decided to do the online program internally as part of our growth.” While many University of Florida students are fresh out of high school and prefer the residential experience, the older stay-at-home parents or caretakers who have earned some credits are opting for online study. In fact, the nontraditional student is now the traditional student. And students at any age are evaluating the versatile options. “Students like versatility, yet the studies must be academically viable and offer a real degree,” says Cummings. “Our UF Online program offers a degree with real faculty member and studies that are worth a student’s time. We offer improved delivery online. Our lecture halls are not face-to-face or ideal. We offer high quality education, a cut above, and we are now doing it right.”

University of Central Florida College of Medicine.

Cummings acknowledges that the university is fortunate because the state of Florida gives them $5 million a year to help with cost control. “The Florida legislature wanted to fuel a more affordable way for students,” says Cummings. “The online students pay fewer fees and tuition than the residential students, about 66 percent less, but the résumé for either student is no different. Our transcript does not say online; it is the same.” With such advances in technology and as more people engage over time, the online reputation will become stronger because the course of study is not isolating or impersonal. Advice for students in general looking to find a solid online program includes looking at the university’s reputation, evaluating the total academic program, researching the student experience and, if there is access to an academic advisor, checking the availability of networking and career services after obtaining the degree and being aware of the overall value in the program selected. University of Central Florida in Orlando, the largest in the state with an enrollment of more than 64,000 students, would not be able to add more students or grow their revenues if they didn’t have an excellent online program focusing on new ideas and student needs. Established in 1963, UCF has had great success with online education during the past 20 years. In the 2016-17 academic year, 81 percent of all students took an online course or a blended course with 72 percent studying completely online. And 42.2 percent total credit courses were completed with online and blended activity. “We have a two percent online growth each year,” says Thomas Cavanaugh, Director of the Center for Distributed Learning. “We provide the services and make it quality learning. We exceed some national programs.”

“We offer the same faculty, the same outcome, and the same objective, which is to expand our reach, allowing every student the opportunity to have the same access to education.” Thomas Cavanaugh, Director of the Center for Distributed Learning at University of Central Florida

The staff is methodical. They design curriculums, train professors and make themselves available to assist with online courses. The university built its online program organically and continues to manage all aspects in-house. The faculty assigns an online developer who works with them through the duration of their careers at the university. While not every course offered to the residential student is available online, more choices are offered than most people think. Some lab techniques are not offered online but students can study concepts like music or art and many other options. Costs differ although tuition is the same for online students or residential students at University of Central Florida. There are distant course fees, and of course, the residential student must pay other fees associated with living, studying, playing sports, etc. on campus. Like other Florida public universities, University of Central Florida’s online program allows them to service more students than the campus could ever hold, so more students have access to education. Students enroll from within Florida or around the country, and the university can continue to grow without erecting any new brick and mortar buildings to house classes. Whether students opt for a blended education, or they prefer studying all courses all online, there is much to offer everyone at University of Central Florida. “So many students now do a mixture of modalities,” says Cavanaugh. “We offer the same faculty, the same outcome, and the same objective which is to expand our reach allowing every student the opportunity to have the same access to education.” This idea, embraced by other Florida universities, is a win-win situation for the institution as well as for the diversity of college students who want to earn their diplomas and their post-graduate degrees electronically. inWESTON MAGAZINE

For adults: Spend a few hours recharging with a massage on a heated quartzsand bed at the Tierra Santa Healing Spa, dine at chef-driven restaurants such as Pao by Paul Qui and Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann, or take in the familyfriendly show Magique, which is Cirque-meets-the-magic-of-Houdini. Turnberry Isle Miami 19999 W. Country Club Dr., Aventura 305.932.6200 | turnberryislemiami.com

Think of this sprawling Aventura resort as a “staycation wonderland” that kids and adults will never want to leave. But if you do, the resort is situated right across the street from the shopping mecca of South Florida, Aventura Mall. S

hopping can work up an appetite. Ask anyone who’s embarked on the ultimate quest for fashion’s Holy Grail at Sawgrass Mills’ tony Colonnade Shops, which resembles a mini Rodeo Drive and is a place where many have been lost for hours, only to emerge depleted in every sense of the word. Overlooking Barneys NY, Helmut Lang, Ted Baker London, Tory Burch and Furla, those in need of sustenance can now stroll into Matchbox American Kitchen + Spirit, the company’s first foray into the Florida market. Though this Matchbox still sports the industrial-chic decor for which the chain is known, its indoor-outdoor setting takes advantage of South Florida’s toasty climate and unrivaled people-watching. The rectangular Birchwood bar seats 58, with the bar top resembling a shuffleboard table, a nod to Matchbox’s Capitol Hill restaurant that yielded a 1920s era shuffleboard in the original building and is a design element now incorporated into every location. Warm evenings lure guests outdoors to dine on a patio that seats 89 beneath propeller fans, or around a cozy corner fire pit that seems more luxury-hunting-lodge than mall locale. The bar is where Matchbox hosts a popular happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with more than 10 small wood-fired pizzas on the menu priced at $9 each, including the Matchbox Meat with spicy Italian sausage, pepperoni, crispy bacon and mozzarella, Pig + Peppers with capicola, mozzarella and marinated Fresno peppers, and

table hopping CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Tuna tartare tacos served with crispy malanga chips, honey-garlic sauce and wasabi oil; fresh pizza emerges from the oven; Chef Brock KurylChampine; mussels and shrimp in white wine broth with garlic bread.

Mushroom White, with cremini mushrooms, ricotta cheese, caramelized onions and mozzarella. Appetizer “Share” specials range from $5 to $9 and include not-to-miss spicy tuna tartare tacos, spicy mini meatballs and CAB mini burgers. Happy hour cocktails are all $7 and include wines and a selection of four cocktails, with the refreshing Patio Pounder Lemonade on the list. Made from house-infused watermelon vodka, lemonade and fresh watermelon, it could very well be habit-forming. Inside the two-story restaurant are exposed pipes, brick walls and pine wood ceilings, and upstairs, touchable walls made from wood reclaimed from a Cincinnati, Ohio, cattle stockyard dating back to the 1800s. A private chef ’s table on the second floor seats eight to ten guests, while around it is a collection of booths overlooking the action below at the bar and pizza exhibition kitchen. An expansive menu offers something for nearly every mood, from light starters and entrée salads to pizzas, grinders, sandwiches and main favorites including Italian Sausage Rigatoni ($15), Braised Short Ribs with smashed Yukon potatoes, cornbread and honey butter ($25) and Mustard-Crusted Salmon with leeks, Yukon potatoes, kale and lemon ($21). Its popular Sunday Brunch sees standard favorites like crab benedict and huevos rancheros served alongside cheeky items like “The Walk of Shame Burrito.”

JULY/AUGUST 2017

Be sure to try the “Table Bubbly Bar” with bottomless Simonet Spanish Cava, paired with juices and nectars for just $18. Did we mention it’s bottomless? Founded in 2003 with its first restaurant in Washington, D.C., Matchbox now has 10 restaurants in four states, generating a following for its brick-oven pizzas, miniburgers and comfort food, served at tables with matchboxes embedded beneath the glass top, a nod to the owners’ first collections. According to lore, the original shape of the first restaurant, inside an old grocery store, was designed like a matchbox, thus the name was born. If everything inside Matchbox, including the service, appears warm, inviting and convivial, it is—shopping respite not required.

VOLVO

Wide wagon or compact crossover: How do you prefer to get your cross country on?

By Steve Siler

Volvo XC60 interior

V

olvo is in the midst of a product revolution right now, starting from the top down with its “90 cluster” vehicles (a.k.a. S90, V90, XC90) that we covered about a year ago. The overhaul continues with the two cool crossover-type vehicles you see here: one sexy derivative of the V90 wagon called the V90 Cross Country and the first of the “60 cluster” cars to get redesigned and successor to its namesake, the XC60, which happens to be Volvo’s best-selling vehicle. With a fair bit of overlap between the two both in purpose and components, I crossed some borders myself to ferret out the differences.

VOLVO V90 CROSS COUNTRY

Behold the V90 Cross Country, the sexy successor to the V70 XC, a.k.a. the V70 Cross Country, which commenced the skyward march of Volvo wagons two decades ago. But as the “90” in its name implies, however, Volvo’s newest tall wagon has gone upscale as well as up high. The V90 Cross Country is based on the wonderful 2017 V90 wagon, but is only one you will see in U.S. Volvo showrooms in 2017. The standard V90 wagon is available only as a special-order model, but since the Cross Country model, with its 2.6-inch higher ride height and two inches of additional width between the wheels, is likely to be the more popular model in the wagon-phobic U.S., Volvo is making life easier for its U.S. dealers by officially promoting the butch version and letting the true wagonistas and contrarians (who likely know about the V90 already) order the low-slung version if they want it.

112

JULY/AUGUST 2017

Flared over-fenders in black along with matching lower sills and bumpers give the V90 Cross Country a rugged visual foundation, and customers who aren’t afraid of scratches and rock chips can have them painted to match the body color as part of the Luxury package. Beneath the skin is an air suspension and Volvo’s “T6” engine, a 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine that is aided and abetted by a supercharger and turbocharger, yielding an impressive 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Thus equipped, the car is rather swift, at least on paper—Volvo claims that the V90 Cross Country can sprint to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds—but with its quiet and unremarkable engine sound and smooth-shifting eightspeed transmission, it doesn’t feel terribly quick. Rather, it feels merely competent. Fortunately, it has three operation modes: comfort (acceptable), eco (sluggish), and dynamic (lively). Hence, we spent much of the time in dynamic mode just to feel the car’s pulse a little bit. Handling proved reasonably impressive for a vehicle with so much suspension travel, while impacts are absorbed with the suppleness you would expect of a luxurious station wagon that costs between $54K and $69K, depending on options. We also did some mild off-roading in the car, not exactly Rubicon Trail-grade stuff but more than we would muster in, say, a Ford Edge, and the V90 Cross Country never lost its footing nor did it scrape its underbelly. Volvo says that people who buy its Cross Country wagons actually do the stuff you see the models do in the glossy SUV brochures, and after our day with the V90 Cross Country in Arizona, we believe it.

wheel life

Volvo V90 interior

2018 VOLVO XC60

As Volvo prepared to launch its so-called “60-Cluster” cars, it told us how the designs would be very distinct, but what we discovered during our day with one in Spain is that some 50 percent of the XC60’s parts—including nearly all of its interior goodies—are interchangeable, and not surprisingly, much of its character evokes its big brother, the seven-seat XC90. That, by the way, is a compliment. Visually, the two trucklets are near clones. The XC60’s overhangs are shorter and the look is a big punchier, but the XC60’s design strays little from the look established two years ago by the larger XC90. While the XC60 conveys the same maturity and style as the XC90, its dimensions place it closer to that of the sporty Porsche Macan than the large Porsche Cayenne. I bring up the Porsche intentionally, since the gutsiest of its XC60’s powertrains, the 400-hp T8 plugin hybrid powertrain, produces roughly the same amount of power as the powerful Macan Turbo, currently most powerful compact luxury crossover in the segment. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to drive that one, nor the base model with its 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder; I only got to drive the 316-hp T6 powertrain, which, like the V90 Cross Country above, uses a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine to get about town. Compared to the V90 Cross Country, I would say that the XC60 felt livelier and more buttoned down, though I wouldn’t venture as far

2017 V90 Cross Country (BASE PRICE: $54,295)

•Relaxed dynamics • Vast cargo space • Luxurious and quiet interior • Impressive off-road capability

2018 XC60

(BASE PRICE: $42,495)

• Looks as slick as the XC90 • Same seats and interior technology as larger Volvos • Available plug-in hybrid with 400 hp • Sporty handling, standard all-wheel drive

off-road in the XC60 as the V90 Cross Country. On the back roads of Catalunya, however, the XC60 proved to be equally athletic and elegant. It corners with razor-sharp precision, yet absorbs bumps like a four-wheeled sponge, allowing the cabin to remain as Zen as all of Volvo’s other recent debutantes while letting the driver have all the fun he or she pleases. If you’re bent on a compact lux-o-ute, there are few as sexy and prolific as the 2018 XC60. And if the SUV is this good, we can’t wait to see what Volvo does with the rest of the “60 cluster” cars—S60 and V60—when they emerge in the not-too-distant future.
