What’s going on in town & its surrounds…
How TO Work IT Out
Homebuilder and divorced dad Michael Daniels was looking for a more effective way to manage family life. The Weston resident, who shares custody of his two grade-school-aged kids with his ex-wife, who lives in Miami, was becoming overwhelmed by the expense and challenges of co-parenting. After one particularly trying day, Daniels began thinking about how he and his ex could prevent small mix-ups from escalating into major problems. “That kind of anxiety kept me up at night,” he says. “I’ve got these two amazing kids and I just didn’t want to waste time in life on ridiculous things.” So Daniels came up with Fayr, the groundbreaking parenting app that simplifies everyday matters for divorced parents by creating a joint family calendar to track activities and timesharing and generates digital records of expenses and real-time location check-ins. It also offers
36
SEPTEMBER 2017
in-app texting to simplify communication between parents and exportable, as well as PDF reports for transparent documentation. Parents using Fayr can drop a geo-pin upon arrival at a location; the other parent receives a notification instantly. It also streamlines all the bookkeeping for family expenses and creates a transparent audit trail, eliminating the need to hunt down receipts or dig through accounting archives. Court-ready documents can be exported with just one touch. The app’s time-sharing calendar enables parents to easily adjust their schedules, trading days if needed while keeping track of their children’s time and activities.
The app was featured on the July 25th episode of Apple’s reality tech series Planet of the Apps, where Daniels’ mentor/advisor was the actress (and divorced mom) Gwyneth Paltrow. “My favorite thing about Fayr is that it was created with the whole family in mind,” Paltrow says. “Separating is a challenging transition for any couple. When children are involved, it’s especially tender and worrisome. Fayr removes unnecessary stresses and tension so parents can collaborate to create calm and stability for their children.” Fayr is available on iOS with a monthly subscription of $4.99. It will be available for Android at the end of 2017. To learn more, visit fayr.com.

Drift your way to improved physical and mental health at the new Float8 Wellness Lounge.
Float8 Wellness Lounge, a brand-new, multi-tank float center that’s the first of its kind in South Florida, has just opened in Deerfield Beach. Founded by husband-and-wife co-owners Matt and Destiny Beck, the facility provides flotation therapy, an alternative health and wellness treatment that reduces stress and offers holistic pain relief by restricting sensory input to the brain. By removing light, sound and the effects of gravity, floaters reach a deep level of mental and physical relaxation that is ideal for healing and meditation. The tank holds 10 feet of water supersaturated with 1,000 lbs. of Epsom salt, creating a dense solution more buoyant than the Dead Sea, allowing the body to float with zero effort. The water is heated and maintained to the same temperature of the surface of the skin (93°F), dissolving the perception of where the body ends and the water begins. The tank is also light-proof and sound-insulated, creating a quiet and dark space. With external sensory input at a minimum, floaters enjoy a profound relaxation response that carries a plethora of benefits, plus scientific research shows floating as a promising treatment for afflictions such as high blood pressure, insomnia, migraines, fibromyalgia, PTSD, addiction and ADHD. Professional athletes and teams that vouch for its benefits include including New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, NBA MVP Steph Curry and Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman and Michael Phelps, among others.
ONE Sotheby’s International Realty recently released its mid-year trend report containing figures and trends on the current state of South Florida’s luxury real estate market compared year-over-year. Anthony M. Graziano, senior managing director for Integra Realty Resources, provides the following expert real estate intel: Buyers are back. Buyers came back in 2017, as a result of better pricing, particularly on the singlefamily side. Buyers are executing on deals and negotiating, and sellers are adjusting the pricing, with properties selling at about 20 percent less than the original price mark. Broward County’s prices hold well and have remained more consistent. While Broward’s volumes have slowed and pricing has leveled off a bit, it still continues to have much better value than what you get in Miami-Dade. Most of the waterfront product in Dade went down 6-9 percent while in Broward pricing went up in every sector. There’s no oversupply. What we see going up are remaining projects that launched 2-3 years ago and were mostly presold at about 40 percent before breaking ground. Notable single-family markets midyear over midyear include Parkland, Plantation and Sunrise, which led Broward County total transactions in the first half, with Sunrise also showing a 12 percent lift in average pricing.

Elemental Herbology has what it takes to make your skin glow—and you’ll actually watch it happen.
Paradise Found It’s right here in Hollywood at the St. Somewhere Spa.
Now that the kids are back in school, waste away the day in true Jimmy Buffett-style at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. At the property’s St. Somewhere Spa, you’ll indulge in tropical treatments such as the “Lost Shaker of Salt Scrub,” an invigorating body scrub that ends with sipping a salt-rimmed margarita; the “Breathe In, Breathe Out Aromatherapy Massage,” a healing massage with customized essential oils, or the “Tequila Sunrise,” a brightening facial that offers a just-back-from-vacation glow. After you’re finished being pampered, unwind in the unisex hot tub and relaxation chaise lounges, or have lunch on the oceanfront terrace (and people-watch at the lively resort below). Top off your spa day by sipping a tropical drink at the dockside 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill or take a leisurely stroll down the popular Hollywood Beach Broadwalk. St. Somewhere Spa, 1111 N. Have you ever received a beauty product sample and immediately become so obsessed that you scrape every single drop from the tube? For me, it’s Elemental Herbology, a UK brand that’s based on the “Five Element Philosophy” of Chinese Medicine (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) meant to benefit different skin types. While the natural line is free of all the bad stuff like parabens and sulfates, it boasts a powerhouse of potent botanical ingredients. “The products use therapeutic levels of plant compounds, herbal extracts, essential fatty acids, botanical oils, vitamins, pure essential oils and antioxidants, which results in well-nourished skin,” says Cassandra Forrest, director of spa at the new Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, where they use the award-winning products in their body treatments. Standout products are the Vital Cleanser, which warms up and contains yummy ingredients like Manuka honey with malic acid, and the Vital Glow Overnight Resurfacing Cream—every time I use it, my skin glows like I had a facial peel from a dermatologist in my sleep. ZACH DISHINGER
Founder & CEO of Formula Z Cosmetics; makeup artist WESTON
“About four years ago, I started making my own makeup concoctions in my kitchen. Every weekend was another chance for me to glam someone up for a production, prom, wedding or special event. Now, the same compulsion to play with colors, textures and formulas is one of the underlying motives of our brand. Formula Z Cosmetics is an edgy-chic makeup line that motivates makeup artists and the makeup-obsessed to be themselves. We are always put in this mold of what ‘beauty’ and ‘pretty’ should look like. Makeup is and always will be a form of expression. It can be used to embrace, empower and liberate.” His personal style, in a nutshell: Edgy meets chic modern-day rock fashion. • 3 closet staples: Black jeans, fun shoes and a bomber or leather jacket, even in the summer. • Item that always completes his look: My Forever Lips liquid lipstick. • Favorite wardrobe item: Bomber jackets and band t-shirts. • Favorite designers: Alexander McQueen, Natacha Morro, Marc Jacobs. • Favorite places and websites to shop: Dolls Kill, Alien Outfitters, and Trash & Vaudeville in New York City. • Style philosophy: “If you walk in the footprints of others, you won’t make any of your own.”

JULIANA RAMIREZ Fashion enthusiast, Philanthropist, Fundraising Chairman for Haape Autism Foundation WESTON
“I was born in Brazil, and since I was little I used to design my dresses and a seamstress would sew them for me. In my high school years, I wanted to travel the world to be a model or a fashion designer, but my mother wouldn’t allow me to because she was scared for my safety. I decided to go to school and study tourism. After I completed two years, I went to Boston to study English. That’s where I met my husband, [Major League Baseball star] Manny Ramirez, and together we have two beautiful boys.” Her personal style, in a nutshell: I dress depending on my mood and where I’m going. I can be trendy one day, edgy, or girly and really elegant, but what defines me is keen attention to detail, quality and one-of-a-kind pieces. • 3 closet staples: A white blouse with personality, vintage-style jeans, silk scarves. • Most regrettable fashion purchase: A Balmain studded biker jacket that I fell in love with while I was in Paris. Since they didn’t have my size I bought it one size down and I never wore it because it was too tight. • Favorite designers: For clothing: Isolda, Adriana Degreas, Sandra Mansour, Luisa Beccaria, Maticevski, Rosie Assoulin, Brandon Maxwell, Givenchy, Dior, Hellessy, Adeam, Esteban Cortazar. For shoes: Gianvito Rossi, Aquazurra, Rene Caovilla, Sophia Webster. • Style icons: Audrey Hepburn for her elegance and Bianca Jagger for her effortless style; she also inspires and makes a difference. • Style philosophy: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”—Coco Chanel Makeup and hair by Amanda Robinson @mandarobinson

“I had a very modest upbringing and had my fair share of difficulties growing up. Because of the neighborhood in which I grew up, I constantly faced situations that could have left me like most of my childhood friends—either dead or in prison. That background is what motivates me to wake up every morning and zealously fight for my clients. My upbringing ignited a flame in me that inspires me to work hard, never make excuses and to always be grateful for another day. It gives me a unique insight into some of the struggles that many of my clients who’ve lost loved ones face. I, too, lost a loved one at 7 years old.” His personal style, in a nutshell: My personal style can be summarized as corporate chic. You can follow some of my fashionable posts on Instagram at @josiahdgraham. • Fashion crime he’d like to put a stop to: Guys are now wearing leggings! This must stop. Now. • Worst style gaffe he’s ever committed: Wearing a leather bubble jacket that looked like a huge garbage bag. • 3 closet staples: A handkerchief always ready to be handed out like a gentleman. A solid tie. And funky socks. • Favorite designers: Steve Madden, Salvatore Ferragamo, Joseph Abboud. • Favorite places to shop: H&M works wonders! It’s trendy and affordable. But if you are in Miami, Satori Amici is a must! • Style philosophy: Less is more.

JOEY EPSTEIN CPA; Principal in the Fortt Lauderdale office of MBAF DOWNTOWN FORT LAUDERDALE “I am not your typical CPA. I enjoy shopping. Clothes, fine dining/wine and watches are my vices. Originally from Chicago, I relocated to South Florida right after college graduation (Miami University (Ohio)). I am an “orange freak”—almost all of my golf/casual clothes include orange. It also covers my three favorite sports teams— the Chicago Bears, the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes. Lastly, I enjoy giving back to my community and profession. I currently sit on the Board of several local not-for-profit entities and recently finished my term as the statewide Chair of the Florida Institute of CPAs (FICPA).” His personal style, in a nutshell: Colorful and well-coordinated. • Fashion crime he can’t pardon: Besides not being able to match colors, it drives me crazy when men wear their ties too short. Also, wearing nice clothes in a “shleppy” manner. • 3 closet staples: Orange shirt/orange sneakers/baseball hats. • Favorite style accessory: I am definitely a watch guy and have many nice luxury watches. My favorites are Hublot, IWC and Panerai. • Favorite designers: All my suits and sports jackets are Canali. My slacks are primarily Zanella and shoes are Ferragamo. • Favorite stores and websites to shop: Pepi Bertini is the best. It is a fantastic men’s boutique on Miracle Mile where I buy most of my dress clothes. Not only do they carry high-quality merchandise, but their tailoring is outstanding. Pepi doesn’t let you take the clothes out of his store until they fit perfectly. For casual, I buy many items from the Robert Graham website. I always go to Weston Jewelers for my watches—Ed and Tracey Dikes are the best. • Style philosophy: Be adventurous!

Causing A Lather Mexico City-born soap star Pablo Azar acts in telenovelas, paints in Wynwood, drives for Uber and campaigns to unionize acting projects in Miami. BY LINDA MARX

lthough his dream was to play soccer, Hispanic soap star Pablo Azar, raised in a small town in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, studied acting because his mother thought it would be a good way to make friends. He took folklore dance and acting classes to hone his skills. By age 16, the family had moved back to Mexico City where he was born, and he continued his mission with photo shoots, modeling and attending casting calls. One day he saw a sign for TV Asteca, a Mexican multimedia conglomerate, that said “bring a headshot.” He jumped at the chance for exposure. “I did an audition, was one of 15 picked out of 2,000 to attend a school, and a career was born,” says the handsome, green-eyed Azar, 35. “I got into the character creation process and fell in love with acting by doing novelas.” Now living mainly in Miami (and back and forth between Mexico City), where he acts, paints, drives for Uber (really) and lobbies for better acting conditions, Azar got his first whiff of South Florida in 2005 when he was sent to Miami to shoot Second Chance, a novela for Telemundo, the Spanish-language network owned by NBC Universal. In it, Azar played a cocky, energetic character who captured the attention of audiences around the world. “I was cast as a silly guy who fell in love with too many ladies,” he laughs. “It was a huge success here and internationally in 100 countries. I got lots of work doing novelas and other projects for Telemundo after the success of that novela.” He also won three Best New Actor awards in Latin America for this role and was able to promote the soap around the world, which broadened his reach. Azar did another project in Colombia, then three years ago was cast in his first English-language show, a TV series for TBS called Wrecked, playing Pablo the fighter. “My character was a starving guy who fought for food,” recalls Azar. From there, the actor did another telenovela for Telemundo called Le Sand, and now he is doing short films for his own company called PAYPA Productions. When he’s not acting, Azar enjoys a second career as an artist. He paints from a Wynwood studio located not far from his Miami digs. He is known as a pop realist who invented a unique, fantasy-journey painting style that he calls “Toonymania.” He has

reinvented the visual arts mixing cartoon and color in images of everyday life, and uses small figures to create one painting, forcing the viewer to look up close and see more than initially meets the eye. “My main objective is to have the observers gaze at my work, losing themselves in a timeless dimension where I invite them to discover what I denote as my creatures,” he explains. “There is always something beneath.” In perfect harmony, his diverse “creatures” fuse together to make one larger and complete picture. (He was a finalist in the painting festival “Le Touquett” in France.) Azar shows his work in Miami, Delray Beach, the Florida Keys and in Chicago, and has had international exhibits in Belgium, Paris, London, Mexico City and around Colombia. He also draws murals and keeps busy with the business of selling art. To make extra money, he drives for Uber, a gig that has led to meeting interesting people. “I have a big ego,” he admits, “and for a while I didn’t want people to know I was an Uber driver. But I am not rich. Although I do well with novelas, they still don’t make me wealthy.” (He adds that his Latin American fans erroneously assume he is rich and driving a Bentley around Palm Beach and Beverly Hills.) So after feeling embarrassed about the sideline for a period of time, he now embraces it as an interesting experiment, a slice of life, and fodder for his upcoming works. What could be better than moonlighting in Miami? “I see how others behave and speak out in the car,” he says, amused. “They think that they are alone so they talk intimately about subjects they should not be talking about. It has become an interesting acting experience for me, and at the same time, it makes me money.” The Uber driving is part of his overall plan to help improve the lives of actors. He says Telemundo actors “don’t usually make as much money as actors in American soap operas.” On a more serious note, Azar started a campaign to unionize acting
projects with Telemundo and Univision, encouraging an agreement to protect members of his craft from starving and spending downtime in the unemployment line. “You need protection in Spanish because there is no pension or overtime,” he complains. “That lack of protection is what forced me to look for a side job. But we won the election, and now we are negotiating to get a SAG-Aftra contract. Conditions have not yet changed, but I am hoping that they will.” Azar intends to get even more political in coming years so he can put pressure on local and state government to allow more tax incentives and get companies to come back to Miami and produce TV. His goal is to become president of Miami SAG/Aftra. With his contacts, heartthrob looks and ability to talk to people on a positive level, he is a good candidate. “I would like to bring new projects to Miami for actors to have choices,” he says. He also makes time for sports, especially soccer—playing and watching it both here and in Mexico City. He enjoys the game of ping-pong and goes to the gym to stay fit. For recreation and downtime, he likes to play video games and spend time with his girlfriend, a Colombian actress. (He was married for six years and is now divorced.) They go to restaurants with friends, travel by car to experience new landscapes like Captiva Island, Micanopy and Indiantown in Florida, and other out-of-the-way places

around the Southeast. “I love traveling to small towns and seeing how others live,” he says. “I don’t drink and I don’t like clubs. I prefer visiting weird places.” Currently, he is working on a project with a poem that his late father wrote. It is not ready for prime time yet but he hopes to finalize the project in coming months to share with others. Down the road, he wants to continue acting, doing many more diversified projects in English. “I want to act in more shows like Wrecked, and I will go to more auditions,” he says. “I will continue to act in Spanish shows, and I hope to do more films. Basically, I do what comes naturally. My art started as a hobby, then became a profession.” Now he wants to take his acting to the next level and at at the same time, make life better for his fellow actors. Could we have a Hispanic Ronald Reagan in the making? Time will tell.

the process of designing the prototypes on his website to show fellow model car buffs each stage of the fascinating behind-the-scenes process. As an expert and aficionado, Goldvarg was the first South American journalist to write about scale-model car collecting in Corsa and Palabrisas, and later, Classic Wheels magazine, and he still writes today. His home is filled with framed Formula One racing posters and signed 8x10 photos he’s taken with legendary drivers, including Michael Schumacher, Mario Andretti and Juan Manuel Fangio, who were all friends. “Since the time I knew cars existed, I was fascinated,” says Goldvarg. “There is a strong car culture in Buenos Aires and I went to races with my father, a physician, who didn’t particularly enjoy the sport but took me because I loved it.” Goldvarg became immersed in all things auto, and in the late ‘90s was the Vice Director of the Argentine Formula One Grand Prix. In 2011, he authored a book about Carlos Pairetti, one of Argentina’s most famous race car drivers. In 2014, he was inducted into the Diecast Hall of Fame in Las Vegas for his dedication to the scale model car industry. Tempted by the beauty of model cars, Goldvarg acquired his own collection of some of the world’s rarest and most desirable vintage cars, which he takes out in rotation every weekend: a 1965 powder-blue Re-
nault, a 1964 mint-colored Mini Cooper, a 1958 orange and yellow BMW, a cream 1962 Volvo from the movie The Saint with Roger Moore, and a 1963 red Alfa Romeo from the manufacturer’s official team that Goldvarg first saw being lowered from a cargo ship by crane at age 5; then fortuitously acquired 40 years later. His hands-down favorite, though, is the 1966 Batmobile, used in the original Batman television series and autographed by Adam West and Burt Ward, who included personal dedications to Goldvarg on the dashboard. “I was 10 years old the first time I saw Batman,” says Goldvarg about the cult classic. “I saw the Batmobile and said, ‘Someday that car will be mine.’ I acquired it 25 years ago in 1993 and at the time it was the only Batmobile registered outside the U.S.,” he says. It’s the Batmobile that stops traffic, and Goldvarg not only uses it for Publix runs, but in community efforts organized by the Broward’s Sheriff’s Office and Hollywood Police Department, including Toys for Tots and Night Out Against Crime. “I show up in full regalia and it helps the cause,” says Goldvarg with a twinkle in his eye. His mobile phone rings. Zock. Pow. Biff! It’s the Batman theme song.

bicycle helmet and riding a Segway through a spice market is, if not exactly normal, at least accepted as part of the reality of being a tourist destination. Grenada is not one of those places. As I rolled unsteadily through Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, on a busy Saturday morning, the looks I got from locals were less “crazy tourist” eye rolls than the gaping stares one might reserve for visiting space aliens. The issue wasn’t with the tour: the guides from Caribbean Rentals Grenada actually did a great job keeping us upright and shepherding us through the narrow streets, the claustrophobic Sendall Tunnel (built in 1894 to connect the two halves of the city and keep horse-drawn carriages from rolling back down a steep hill into the ocean) to the Grenada National Museum. It’s just that, while visitors aren’t exactly unknown in Grenada, they do tend to blend
in a little better. That’s because this isn’t an island you come to for booze cruises and parasailing, but for authentic culture and amazing local food, not to mention some of the most luxurious resorts in the Caribbean. The difference starts with the smell: Grenada is known as the Spice Island, and the scent of nutmeg and cinnamon suffuse the air in Market Square. In Grenada, nutmeg is everywhere, from a sprinkle on top of your rum punch to nutmeg butter on your morning toast. You can even buy it as a pain-relieving salve at the nutmeg factory in

Gouyave, where workers sort and grade nuts straight from the fields in a process straight out of the 18th century. It’s the best $1 tour you’ll find anywhere. For $2, a guided tour of the historic River Antoine Rum Distillery adds rum tastings: you’ll definitely want to pack their silky-smooth chocolate rum in your checked luggage home. Like the nutmeg factory, the distillery is a throwback to simpler times: a river tumbling down a hillside from the rainforest is channeled into an aqueduct to turn a water wheel, which crushes fresh-cut sugar
cane to extract the sugary “honey” that’s distilled into fiery 180-proof spirits. Unless you’re ordering a cheeseburger (and you probably shouldn’t), nearly everything you eat on Grenada is produced locally—it’s literally a farm-to-table island. The “Bean to Bar” tour at the Belmont Estate moves effortlessly from cocoa and spice production to lunching on papaya salad, green banana soup and mutton. Dessert, you say? includes a savory 71-percent cacao bar flavored with sea salt. Also keeping it real with the local food scene is the True Blue Bay Resort, which hosts a lively Wednesday night “street food” buffet where you can sample Grenada’s national dish, the one-pot “Oil Down”—a mix of local herbs, spices, callaloo, vegetables, salted meat, and even bananas. If it’s good and it grows in Grenada, chances are it’s in the Oil Down. The dish is hearty eating, but you can dance it off to live local music as street food gives way to a street party as the night goes on. The low-rise luxury resorts along Grand Anse Beach step up Grenada’s culinary experience at restaurants like Oliver’s at the Spice Island Beach Resort and Arawakabana at the Coyaba Beach Resort. Seaside dining hits its peak with lunch at the Beach Club restaurant at the Calabash Beach Resort, where we grazed through a refined tapas menu of ceviche, callaloo and feta fritters, and panseared mahi-mahi. La Belle Creole, located in a hillside estate home, richly rewards you with traditional fine dining: butter-fried loCLOCKWISE FROM TOP: La Luna Restaurant; Spice Island Beach Resort; Calabash Beach Club; underwater statues at the Troy Lewis’ Underwater Sculpture Museum; the view from Mount Cinnamon Resort.

goosey’s house
Miramar has one of the largest Jamaican populations in the U.S., so it’s not surprising that its adopted son and Jamaican native Paul Bennett would find a receptive audience for his authentic Jamaican cuisine.

ou won’t find the Jamaican national flag, life-sized pictures of Bob Marley, or photos of exotic waterfalls on the walls of Roun-A-Goosey, Paul Bennett’s authentic Jamaican “fine dining” restaurant in Miramar. The first-time restaurant owner says the cuisine is his native island’s ambassador and justly, takes center stage. No one walking through the door is just a customer. “You are family,” says Bennett, flashing his signature megawatt smile. Every child knows him as “Uncle Goosey.” While Bennett has taken liberty with the term “fine dining” (as he explains, it’s to differentiate from mostly takeout Jamaican spots), he’s created a warm, family atmosphere within a relatively new Mediterranean-style development centrally located on Red Road. Groupings of silk roses grace the restaurant’s six indoor tables, as the cozy place bustles with takeout orders (“Jamaicans traditionally like to eat at home,” explains Bennett). It was the Jamaica native’s lifelong dream to open a restaurant, but professional detours led him to spend a decade as the Chief Administrative Officer of Meteorological Service in Jamaica, then relocate to Miami for an MBA and 12 years as the City of Miramar’s Human Resources Analyst. In 2016, Bennett switched gears and made his dream a

reality, first choosing the all-important name, Roun-A-Goosey, a nod to his Jamaican nickname and the place to watch sporting events. When people at home would ask, “Where are you watching the game?” the response would inevitably be “Roun-A-Goosey,” i.e., Goosey’s house. Next, he hired Jamaica native and 30-year culinary veteran Lucal Gordon as his executive chef to create authentic dishes that Jamaicans would recognize and newbies would savor. Finally, the opening date of June 13, 2016, was considered auspicious as Bennett’s lucky number, past dorm number and teen soccer jersey are all 13. Those who have never tried Jamaican food are in for a treat here. Those who consider themselves aficionados are seen coming and going all day for the familiar flavors and spices and recipes that are, for the most part, kept under lock and key, as is the ingredients for “Goosey Punch,” the sweet, flavorful, non-alcoholic concoction that provides a nice balance for the spiced delicacies Chef Gordon presents. The menu is simple and manageable, highlighting the best of Bennett’s island cuisine, including flavorful brown stew chicken (all the meat is seasoned the day before and allowed to marinate), oxtail with butter
It’s generous, home-cooked food that transports Jamaicans back to “the rock.” beans, curry goat, chicken or shrimp, and the ever-popular jerk pork and jerk chicken, all with flavors that pop yet don’t overwhelm. Chef Gordon combines scallions, thyme and bell peppers with Jamaican seasonings to give nearly every dish a spicy kick. Flavorful grouper and red snapper are served in a variety of styles: brown stew, roasted, escovitch-style and stuffed with callaloo. Every entrée comes with a hearty cup of soup, which changes daily (don’t miss Thursday’s red peas soup with beef and dumplings, which is a meal in itself), or salad and a choice of white rice, rice and peas or vegetables. It’s generous, home-cooked food that transports Jamaicans back to “the rock,” with prices and variety that allow multiple visits per week. Dinner entrées start at $13, while lunch entrées begin at $10, with weekday lunch specials offered for $5.95. A Healthy Choice menu includes jerk chicken salad, wraps and chop suey with prices that range from $8 to $16.50. Weekends are for saltfish with ackee or callaloo, stew peas, and cornmeal or hominy porridge, which Bennett says will satisfy any appetite for an entire day. New to Roun-A-Goosey is the Friday After Work Jam, with music from 6-9 p.m. indoors and al fresco on the patio, and Live Music Sundays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with a variety of local artists, including the local Bush family, featured on the Today show and touted as “America’s most amazing family.” It’s all part of the dream for Paul Bennett, who as a natural host and island ambassador, invites all to come Roun-a-Goosey. 2017 GENESIS
G80V. GENESIS G90
Hyundai’s spin-off luxury division starts. By Steve Siler
I
n 2008, Hyundai drove a stake in the luxury automotive ground with its feature-laden, mid-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan, the Genesis. But Hyundai had loftier ambitions than the Hyundai brand name could support, so it ripped a page from the Toyota/Lexus playbook and elevated Genesis into a standalone luxury brand. Now six unique models are planned by 2020. Just as Lexus debuted in 1989 starting with its full-size, four-door flagship, the LS400, the Genesis brand entered the scene with a palatial sedan, the G90, and to avoid confusion, the Hyundai Genesis sedan was re-christened Genesis G80, positioned one tier down the price/ prestige ladder. Having spent many comfortable hours driving both the G90 and G80, I have no doubt that, despite what people think of Hyundai, the Genesis-branded vehicles will be competitive not only on price, but on substance.
2017 GENESIS G90 5.0
As a luxury brand borne of a brand that’s well-known for being quite the opposite, Genesis must prove that it’s not simply pilfering gussiedup econo-cars but rather automobiles born and bred for the modern aristocracy. Shouldering most of that burden is the G90 flagship, which faces off against the Lexus LS, Audi A8, even the Mercedes-Benz SClass. So does it belong? A luxury car’s merits are arguably earned from the inside out, and the G90 checks all the important boxes. Soft-close doors seal the cabin, creating optimal listening conditions for its 17 shimmering Lexicon speakers. Pillowy seats provide heavenly comfort front and rear, with the long wheelbase bestowing serious stretch-out room for reclining rear seaters. Genesis banished hard plastics, leaving soft hides, polished

wood and high-grade metallic materials in their place. A 12.3-inch infotainment system is controllable from every outboard seat via front and rear rotary dials. While its competitive set offers most of this stuff in some form, none makes everything standard, including power rear sunshades, head-up instruments, semi-autonomous radar cruise control, and more. The customer needs only to decide between the V-6 and the $2,500-pricier V-8 model, rear or all-wheel drive, black or beige upholstery, and exterior color. Ideally, flagship sedans should be as powerful as the VIPs inside them, and fortunately, neither the 365-hp turbocharged V-6 in the G90 3.3T Premium nor the 420-hp V-8 in the G90 5.0 Ultimate is remotely underpowered. But the G90’s most impressive aspect may be its uncanny smoothness. In contrast to many top-shelf sedans that transmit certain road textures to the cabin, the G90 lets nothing in, leaving passengers feeling like they’re floating above the ground. I personally prefer more buttoned-down handling, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the G90’s surreal glide. If only the G90’s styling was so inspiring. As a brand establishing its very identity, Genesis needs a flagship with certain distinctive features destined to become Genesis hallmarks. Alas, most of its exterior bits seem derivative—and I’m not saying they are—but the bolt-upright, six-sided grille sure does recall the Audi A8, and there’s palpable BMW 7-Series influence in the sheet metal. The Benz S-Class appears to have informed the sloping rear while the S-Class’ Maybach spinoff could

have donated the thick band of chrome surrounding the windows. The G90’s pastiche of elements comes together nicely enough, but if Genesis expects to gain the respect of these customers, it can’t sneak in through the back with an innocuous-looking sedan. While the G90 fails to beat any of its stalwart competitors at their own game, it does makes some impressive plays, particularly insofar as feature content, spaciousness, ambience and smoothness. Most important, there’s nary a whiff of Hyundai-ness to be found except in price, which at $69,075 is thousands less than its closest competitor.

2018 GENESIS G80 SPORT
Genesis may be a new brand, but the G80 actually arrived for 2015 as the second-generation Hyundai Genesis. Technically a mid-size sedan, but seeming larger with its long, blunt nose and slab sides, the suddenly substantial rear-driver felt more like something a luxury brand should be selling, especially with its optional 420-hp V-8. And that’s exactly what happened, of course, when the G90 and the Genesis arrived for 2017. Now that the G80 wears a premium-brand badge—a winged medallion that reads “GENESIS” in all caps—how does it fare next to such fancy four-doors as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series and Cadillac CTS? Well, its bona fides are solid—quiet cabin, comfortable seats, impressive space front and rear, and an ability to iron out every wrinkle in the road before the occupants feel them. Very close inspection reveals its inner Hyundai, however. For example, the dashboard’s cliff-like height and asymmetrical A/C vents seem more Sonata than S-Class; ditto the plain-Jane script fonts used for buttons and displays screens, and at night, I counted four different shades of white among those various white-on-black gauges and displays. Minor as they are, each of these details represent what separate thoroughbred luxury cars from their plebian counterparts. For what it’s worth, the G90 didn’t
112
SEPTEMBER 2017
suffer from any of this, and we looked. The new-for-’18 G80 Sport I tested borrows the G90’s 365-hp twin-turbocharged V-6 and eight-speed automatic, effectively splitting the difference between the G80’s base 311-hp (non-turbo) V-6 and the aforementioned 420-hp V-8. In addition to cutting the 0–60 time down to the low five-second range, it boasts a retuned suspension (that’s still soft), upgraded brakes, bronze-tinted exterior brightwork, a mesh grille, dark chrome wheels, aero skirts, blackout mirrors and headlamps surrounds, plus carbon fiber interior accents. However comprehensive the upgrades are, the G80 Sport never achieves a sporty character, primarily due to its weight, which is among the heaviest of all mid-size cars. With the bronze trim, however, it looks great, and even at $56,225—$14K more than the base V-6 and just $1,750 shy of the cushier V-8 model—it remains a strong value next to its German counterparts. Make ours red. To test drive the Genesis G90 or G80, stop by Rick Case Genesis at 3550 Weston Road, Davie, or Rick Case Genesis, 925 N. SR 7, Plantation.

More than 300 VIP guests gathered at the Botaniko Sales Gallery for the foodie affair, where they had the chance to meet and greet with the renowned panel participants, including Adrienne Grenier, Kim Bokamper, Mike Linder, Tim Petrillo and Giovanni Rocchio. The panel engaged and delivered as the bigname participants dished about what’s cooking on the East Broward culinary scene and shed some light on the latest trends, developments and concepts in the market. Prior to the panel, attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour that included a sampling of bites from participating restaurants 3030 Ocean, Casa D’Angelo, Valentino Cucina Italiana, Silver Lining Catering and Bokampers, along with hor d’eouvres and drinks, including a specialty craft cocktail courtesy of YOLO. Tim Petrillo and Giovanni Rocchio.
