We are currently working on a pro bono project alongside St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Davie. Two teens who lost their parents to a car accident were living in a home that was not habitable—it had water leaks, mold in the kitchen due to water damage, and was overall destroyed. We pulled together with our contacts to completely remodel the floors, bathroom, kitchen and roof. The project will be completed this week at no cost to the two teens.”

Give us some tips we’d be surprised to hear.

“We highly recommend the use of vinyl floors to our clients in the South Florida area. Not only is this a growing trend, but they are resistant to water and heat. Also, wallpaper concepts have totally revamped over time. Today, they come in different textures and designs that are very modern and will create a contemporary feel in any space.”

barely remembers a time when he wasn’t working on ice. Skating at age 2 and hitting the puck by age five, this Sudbury, Ontario raised National Hockey League (NHL) star has spent his life practicing and playing ice hockey. “This is normal for Canadians,” says MacKenzie, 35, a forward and alternate captain for the Florida Panthers. “Winters were spent skating on outdoor rinks. Everyone plays hockey there.”

Like football or basketball in the U.S., playing hockey is a natural way of life for aspiring athletes in Canada.

With the country’s long and freezing winters, living on ice is de rigueur—as it was for MacKenzie, who lives in Parkland during the hockey season with his Sudburybred wife and their two children, a 5-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. “I didn’t really know how talented I was while growing up,” says MacKenzie, who played junior hockey in Sudbury, the Canadian town that has turned out more NHL players than almost any other small city there besides Thunder Bay. “I was as good as the others, and I was committed.”

Since MacKenzie’s father, Ken, was a hockey player (left wing) who became a coach and assistant general manager of the Sudbury Wolves, there wasn’t much wiggle room in his family. He balanced school and friends with hockey, while playing soccer and baseball during the short summer season. “I missed a lot of other things because of my dedication to hockey,” he says. “But I was happy with the sport and turned pro at age 20.”

Standing 5’11” and weighing 175 pounds, ­MacKenzie began his professional career with the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. (He was drafted 128th overall.) He played in that organization from 2001-2007 before joining the Columbus (Ohio) Blue Jackets. He stayed there until he signed with the Panthers on July 1, 2014. During the 20142015 season with the Panthers, he ranked fifth in the NHL for hits, played in all 82 games and recorded 11 points. In last year’s season, he led the Panthers in faceoff win percentage (54.8), led all Panthers forwards with 154 hits and ranked second on the team overall.

He recorded 13 points in 64 games. And he has served as alternate captain since 2014.

In July, he signed a two-year extension with the Panthers worth a cool $2.75 million. His daily life is busy, and he knows he has to stay in fighting shape for such a rough-and-tumble sport. (According to ESPN statistics, ice hockey is the second-roughest sport in the area of difficulty after boxing. Football and basketball

come next.) As one hockey pundit put it in an online report, “Ice hockey is figure skating in a war zone.”

And die-hard fans can’t get enough of the shoving, hitting, stitching and overall brutality the players can show toward each other in the heat of a game. While most players try to keep a game face and continue to play even after being struck by a puck, they all know how important it is to keep in good form to survive such a combat zone.

To keep in shape, MacKenzie adheres to a nononsense exercise regimen. During the off-season, he starts slowly by unwinding and relaxing away from the ice. He spends time socializing with his friends and family before heading home to Sudbury for the summer. But once he’s back on track in his hometown, MacKenzie heads for the gym every morning and lifts weights for 90 minutes before mixing in cardio, alternating between time on the bike and time on the track.

MacKenzie also has a healthy nutritional routine, which includes eating often to sustain his energy level. He starts the day with a big breakfast that includes eggs for protein.

He usually has lunch at the arena, which can be foods like chicken salad or pasta. Dinner at night is always solid and nutritious, with salmon or steak, vegetables and pasta. “We are encouraged to get what we need in our meals,” says MacKenzie. “Especially on game days. The Panthers organization provides us with great food.” While he is pretty strict during the season, the jock says summer with his children is when he can let loose and have more fun with food. “While I eat in moderation, I do enjoy ice cream and pizza once in a while, especially when I am out with the kids,” he admits.

MacKenzie advises others to eat in moderation and find a specific exercise or sport that they enjoy doing. He suggests they work hard at repetitions and make it a regular part of the day. “For the best fitness, find something you

“I get into the best hockey-playing shape until late July,” MacKenzie explains. “Then I begin skating until training camp starts on Sept. 24 and the season routine begins.”

This includes MacKenzie’s first days back in Florida, where he undergoes physical exams from the team’s doctors. Those are followed by physical testing, with exercises like chin-ups, pushups, the Windgate Test on a bike that measures peak anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity, and vertical jumps to raise his center of gravity higher on the vertical plane with his own muscles. This functions to see how high he can jump off of the ground from a standstill position.

After completing these tests, he heads for the ice and practices each day. The first game of the season is Oct. 9, beginning a long and intense hockey season with the Panthers. “In-season mornings consist of my going to the rink, doing a workout and staying on the ice for 90 minutes,” he says. “After that, I see a video, then I go home.”

In addition to spending time with family and friends who still live in Sudbury, the MacKenzies love to go to Lake Wanapitei, which occupies a meteorite crater in an area around the town. They have a cottage on the lake where their summers consist of swimming, boating, skiing and fishing. Another summer highlight is MacKenzie’s charity, Hats for Heroes, which benefits the Northern Ontario families of children with cancer. It helps the kids as well as their families and aims to ease the financial stress for parents so the children can get better. For the past seven years, MacKenzie has hosted a warm-weather golf tournament to raise money for the charity, sometimes earning more than $50,000 a year. “It is all about the children and making them comfortable from day to day,” he says. “We spend time with them in the hospital, and also suit them with hockey equipment.”

MacKenzie is grateful so many people support the golf tournament and make it a success each summer. (During the winter season in Florida, he goes out into the community to show people that he is more than just a “physical and fighting larger-than-life character” while supporting other charities.) He also knows that at age 35, he doesn’t have too many more years to play professional hockey in such a big way. But he never wants to leave the game. He would like to stay in hockey management or do something significant with the sport. “I want to stay involved when playing comes to an end,” MacKenzie says. “I hope to work in hockey in some way.” For this well rounded pro, that would be the icing on the cake.

He’s a happy hockey player. Not only does he excel and love the sport, but hockey has also enriched his life. He’s met interesting players along the way and remains friends with many of them, including fellow Canadian Mike Fisher, the Nashville Predators star and husband of singer Carrie Underwood. The hockey pros played together for the Sudbury Wolves earlier in their careers. Other pals include former Wolves stars like Andrew Raycroft and Taylor Pyatt, who have both played in the NHL. “I’m fortunate to have great friends I met through hockey over the years as well as new friends in the league,” he says. “We are all busy with our families but we keep in touch.”

MacKenzie also feels blessed to have traveled the world with hockey, attacking the ice in Russia and Europe, including countries like Holland, Germany and Sweden, and all over Canada and the U.S. “Seeing so many places has been a bonus for me, in addition to making a living at something I love,” he says. He adds, “But we have lived in so many places, it’s been hard on my wife and kids, so I am happy to be settled in Florida.”

While in Parkland, MacKenzie and his wife like to take the kids, who are both American citizens, to Orlando theme parks, the Keys and the Gulf of Mexico, where they especially like the beaches and laid-back atmosphere of Marco Island. “We take advantage of living in Florida,” he says of the winter season. “Then we enjoy the best

Weight training and tennis. I love to be active everyday. When the “workout stars” align with my busy schedule, I prefer three days a week of weight training/body weight exercises in the gym for no more than an hour and two days a week of tennis for my fun-filled cardio.

HOW SHE JUST DOES IT:

Ha! You just do it. Easier said than done; however, if you’ve made exercise a priority, it can’t be an option to skip. Remind yourself how great it makes you feel. When I’m not feeling up to it, I just tell myself to go for a walk or get to the gym and do something. Anything is better than nothing.

ABSOLUTE MUSTS:

Water, water and more water! It is so important to stay hydrated and something that I always have to remind myself to do: drink. So many times you think you are hungry, but you are just dehydrated. I try to stay stocked with lean proteins like fish and chicken to add to my salads or have with a side of veggies that I usually roast with a little olive oil. I also love avocados.

WILLPOWER GOES OUT THE WINDOW FOR…

My homemade salsa kills me every time. I can make a half-gallon and it won’t last two days. Also, Nutella or Oreos stay at Walgreens, and when I really want chocolate I have to drive to get the individual servings because I’ve never had Oreos or Nutella longer than two days in my house. I will eat the entire box or container—no doubt.

MOTIVATION TO KEEP MOVING:

My age—40!—and my children. The older I get, the younger I want to feel.

I’ve learned so much over the years and I need muscle to help not have injuries and to keep up with my sports and active children for a long life. I feel my best when I get proper sleep, nutrition and exercise.

I’m always mixing it up, though, and I love running on South Beach. I usually do 3.5 miles. Anything outdoors or in the water makes me happy: paddle boarding, surfing, swimming. And I love Pilates.

HOW SHE JUST DOES IT:

Sometimes I just give myself a break and I don’t beat myself up about it. It’s not the end of the world if you miss a workout or if you’re routine is off. If I’m busy or on the go, I have a 20-minute Pilates routine that I can do. It’s easy to squeeze in and makes me feel like I’m not being completely lazy.

ABSOLUTE MUSTS:

I make a large batch of green smoothie at home that lasts for about three days: 7 cups kale, 6 cups romaine, 1 apple, 1 pear, 1 banana, 1.5 cup celery, lemon juice. It’s a no-brainer, nutrient rich breakfast/snack that’s always in my fridge.

I find the energy of others to be energizing to me, so while I push myself pretty hard when I work out on my own, I push myself even harder in the presence of others. I also love a good outdoor run in a new place; I travel so much for my automotive journalism; it’s a great way to check out the places I land.

HOW HE JUST DOES IT:

I admit I’m not always successful at this, and there are many workouts I plan early in the day that I postpone until later in the day. But again, I think about 1) the friends I know will be at the gym, and 2) the results, of course, and if I’ve had too many cheat meals that day, and that usually gets me there.

ABSOLUTE MUSTS:

I also start the day by pouring a cup of pasteurized egg whites and a cup of blueberry-açai Goodbelly juice into a bottle and downing it. Sounds gross, but you don’t taste the egg whites, and you get 25 grams of protein along with a load of probiotics and vitamins all at once.

It’s an exotic location for international denizens who are eager to make Fort Lauderdale a part-time home. But whatever your reason, the Ocean Residences at Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort offer sexy and modular interior design with smashing ocean views.

Created to resemble a boat in a nod to the city’s emphasis on yachting and water sports, the oceanfront residences are flexible for all kinds of South Florida lifestyles. The various units are spread out among floors six to 24, with 109 decorator-ready and 181 fully furnished.

When Andreas A. Ioannou, CEO of Orchestra Hotels and Resorts, and a long-time general manager with Hilton Hotels, decided to develop his own properties, he wanted to buy this Michael Graves-designed building on Fort Lauderdale Beach. He loved the look, location and potential for development into lovely residences.

In 2013, when Ionnaou’s company finalized the acquisition of the building and signed a management agreement with Hilton’s Conrad, the interiors and the exterior were 90 percent finished. But he wanted to put his own nautical mark on the rooms and began to institute the many changes that were needed. “We wanted the interiors of the residences to look like a luxury yacht,” says Ioannou, who has worked at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. “We also liked the porthole windows and sixth-floor pool.”

He had a lot to work with. So he thought more about it and sought advice from design professionals in South Florida. “We looked at the interiors, then changed the design three times,” he says. “It seemed too much like a big-city luxury hotel. We wanted a sexier, beach-inspired vibe for the residences. So we brought in Steven G to design the interiors. We agreed that all of the furnishings and accessories would come from Artefacto.” Because Artefacto is known for its sleek and modern

indoor/outdoor furnishings with an emphasis on design, function and value, the contemporary look worked well with the developer’s vision.

Ioannou also believes that residents of these kinds of oceanfront units—people who are downsizing or who are used to staying in the finest hotels in the world—want to be pampered in their new homes.

So he has added that component to the mix. The developer knows that people covet their own style. Yet, in many cases of couples or families, they also like the amenities and services of a hotel, similar to what they have enjoyed while vacationing. So he put these ideas together, determined that the residents of the Conrad will have the best of everything.

In fact, the residences are part of the first Conrad Hotels & Resorts residential resort property in North America. The studio apartments and the larger units resonate everything the interiors are supposed to exhibit: nautical and luxurious furnishings with the feel of a top-of-theline yacht.

There are at least seven different designs in the various residences, all within the nautical theme and all with exquisite finishes and furnishings. “Steven G. is known for leather, high-end materials and wood, so everything worked out as we had envisioned,” says Ioannou. “We are very pleased with the look and feel of the interiors.”

In one of the studio (640 square feet) designs with its multi-use spaces, a media projector and blackout window shades that double as film screens convert the room to a cozy home theater. In another residence, a home office can change quickly into a woman’s vanity. And in another, coffee tables in the living areas can transform to dining tables for family meals or larger dinner parties.

Ioannou and his team designed a variety table that can be used for several different functions to please all family members. The designers also used white leather couches in the studio’s living space that could double as a guest’s place to snooze. And a “fighting” chair for easy lounging indoors can be used for fishing. “We like multifunctional spaces and the idea of indoor-outdoor living to take advantage of the oceanfront location as well as the nautical theme, which we keep contemporary and light,” says the developer, who worked closely with the design team.

Residents and guests enter the space via the marble foyer. Throughout the home, Italian porcelain floors look like wood. Leather panels with stitching resemble the decor of boats. Kitchens are open and light, with Sub-Zero refrigerators, Wolf cooktops and Bosch microwaves, cabinets made of wood with shiny laminate, aqua glass wall tiles and modern pendant lights. In the larger residences, the kitchens feature breakfast bars so families can have coffee together and enjoy the water views from morning until sunset.

Bathrooms are sleek, with walk-in showers, marble Kohler double vanities with Waterworks faucets and separate soaking tubs by Kohler.

And the bedrooms repeat the built-in themes with simple yet functional pieces that look like they belong where they are placed. European-style beds from Artefacto in pale gray or brown-beige are appointed with Ralph Lauren linens.

For the exterior, the architect and engineers created a glass enclosure to connect the sixth-floor swimming pool, which creates an oasis with a lounge and cabana area. Picture a movie billboard with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant catching some rays before driving their sports car along the ocean. “I want the cabana and pool area to look like Monte Carlo or Cannes in the south of France,” says Ioannou. “This building will be very alive with happy residents who enjoy a total lifestyle. With our nautical design and the very best finishes, the interiors are the finest and most luxurious in South Florida.”

What about your urgent care center?

“Our urgent care center is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It’s also open after hours during the week and on weekends. It’s also much less expensive than going to a hospital emergency room. In addition, you’re also not going to be exposed to the long waits and turnaround times that are typically associated with a hospital emergency room.

We also partner with many local Weston businesses to provide occupational health benefits to their workers and be their partner from a Worker’s Compensation viewpoint.”

What is the significance of your women’s health center?

“What’s significant is that we have a separate and distinct women’s center. It’s a private suite and it has an all-female staff. And within it, we provide mammography, ultrasound and bone density testing. There are other women’s centers in the area. But they are all hospital-based. So this is really the only hospital-owned, freestanding women’s center. And again, that means the tests are significantly less expensive.”

What can I do to prevent my child’s eye from getting worse?

Dr. Abraham: “One thing is to have them get outside at least 12 hours a week or an hour and a half a day.

Another thing is to consume less sugar in their diets and eat fewer processed foods.

And another important one is for every 45 minutes they spend on the computer, they should take a five- or 10-minute break.”

Can a person wear contact lenses if they have allergies or dry eye?

Dr. Schramm: “Yes. Allergies in the eyes are quite common. Most people don’t know that tear production is cut in half when an oral histamine such as Claritin is used. So the best option for patients is daily disposable contact lenses, because you wear a fresh pair every day and the allergens do not build up on them. A triglyceride-based Omega-3 fish oil supplement is usually helpful for dry eye.”

WITH DR. AL DESIMONE, director of sports medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida What is one of the most common injuries you treat in your practice?

“Over the last several years, I have focused on ACL reconstructive surgery.

This has become a much more common injury in sports as the degree of competition and participation in high demand athletics has increased over the last few years.”

Have you noticed any trends in this type of procedure?

“I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation. I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with attention to detail utilizing state-of-the-art surgical techniques. While re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique-related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tension and/ or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including about returning to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury.”

What are your expectations for your athletes after performing this procedure?

“The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his/her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Treatment of an ACL rupture continues to be a challenging problem for high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals and their parents understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner.”

WITH DR. THOMAS SAMUEL AND DR. DIEGO SADLER of Cleveland Clinic Florida What’s most important to understand about developing heart disease after breast cancer?

Dr. Samuel: “In patients who have cancer, and especially among those who have breast cancer specifically, many of the therapies we use, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy, actually do impact a patient’s long term cardiac risk. For example, some of the agents we use in chemotherapy increase future risk of heart failure. So, because of those issues, we have worked hard to develop a formal cardio-oncology program, which means cardiologists who have a special interest in managing patients with cancer.”

How significant are the risks of heart disease as a result of breast cancer treatment?

Dr. Sadler: “Fortunately, the percentage of patients affected by those treatments is relatively small, and there are now sophisticated imaging modalities that allow early detection and treatment of potential cardiac toxicity from those treatments. Oncologists and cardiologists collaborate in the treatment and allow patients to complete their potentially life-saving cancer treatments with minimal effects on their cardiovascular health.”

What is most important for breast cancer patients to be aware of?

“We offer a variety of treatments for the prevention of tooth decay or to save or repair teeth when that is necessary. They include topical fluoride, which makes teeth more resistant to decay.

Dental sealants are a plastic coating that can be applied to prevent cavities by sealing the little grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth known as pits and fissures. We also perform root canal treatments that can help save an injured or severely decayed tooth.”

You also specialize in special needs dentistry. What is that?

“Children with special needs can be divided into two groups.

The first group includes children with dental problems such as congenital anomalies of the oral structures, severe skeletal malocclusion, cleft lip or palate or both, and the many syndromes that include defects of the oral cavity. “It is more of a multi-disciplinary facility. We are the only licensed specialty hospital dedicated to children in South Florida. We provide evaluation and treatment for children with neurological disorders. Our medical staff consists of top pediatric specialists from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. And as an outpatient center based at the hospital, we bring a wealth of knowledge and resources to the community.”

When did the center open and how has it evolved?

“We opened in March 1998, so we will be 20 years old in two years.

Over the past few years, we have added some sub-specialty practices, such as genetics, endocrinology and rheumatology. We have also increased our aquatics program, which includes swim instruction and in-pool therapies for children, such as physical therapy and occupational therapy. And within the last year, we have begun to offer sleep studies.”

What types of services do you offer?

“What really makes us different as a children’s facility is the multidisciplinary approach. We are an all-inclusive, one-stop facility for treating neurological disorders in children. For example, our sub-specialties include allergies, immunology, genetics and rheumatology. We also offer rehab services such as physical therapy and speech and language therapy. We also offer a complete diagnostic center that includes EEG and video EEG, MRI, EKG and walk-in X-ray services.”

What exciting new treatment options are on the horizon?

“There are a lot of things to be excited about now. From a patient perspective, what they are most interested in is immunotherapy. Because of improvements in treatment, it’s also becoming harder and harder to define what exactly is chemotherapy, which we think of traditionally as IV drips, which have a lot of toxicity. Many of the newer medications have fewer side effects.”

Once diagnosed with breast cancer, how should a patient select a treatment center?

“One of the most important things is whether your doctor is constantly educating himself or herself about the newest and best available treatments. It’s also important they offer you multiple good choices, even if not all are offered in that facility. For example, for some patients, the best option for some patients might be a clinical trial that is not open at your facility.”

What is most important about the senior programs?

“The entire country, not just our area, is facing a challenge with providing seniors with independence and good quality of life.

Our new program is called HEAR, which stands for ‘hearing loss education and advocacy resources.’

It’s for seniors aged 80 and older in their homes. We provide case management, outreach, mental health and audiological services.”

What audiological services do you provide?

“We have a doctor of audiology who provides hearing examinations and evaluations, as well as treatment and counseling about hearing aids and other devices. We’re continuing to expand into more of a boutique style of service.

“It is a way to do surgery with smaller incisions. The biggest one is just 10 millimeters.

And the surgical instruments are introduced into the incisions. The benefits of that technique are lower risk, reduced recovery time and less pain. Of the common procedures we perform that way, one is tubal ligation, which means sterilization. We also laparoscopic hysterectomies and diagnostic laparoscopy.”

What is Nexplanon(R) and why do you recommend it?

“Nexplanon(R) is a type of long-acting, reversible contraception. It is a small match-sized device that is placed under the skin of the upper arm. It contains progesterone and lasts for three years. It is especially good because women do not have to remember to take a pill every day. It is also the most effective type of contraception available in the U.S. The risk of pregnancy is just 0.03 percent.”

“All breeds of dogs can become therapy dogs. But they must have remarkable temperaments. They must be calm and socially engaged with people. They must be the type of dog that naturally wants to meet new people and make new friends. And people are surprised to learn that pitbulls often actually make great therapy dogs.

They tend to be highly social.”

What is the process for becoming a volunteer with your dog?

“The training with us costs about $300 and takes 8 to 10 weeks. Once you and your dog have completed the training, the process of finding places to volunteer varies by facility. Once you and your dog are a certified therapy dog team, you contact whatever facilities you are interested in visiting and they will tell you what their policies and guidelines are. And demand for therapy dogs is growing steadily. It’s a great form of public service.”

“A therapy dog specially is trained to perform what is called ‘animal-assisted therapy.’ That means they visit places like hospitals, schools or libraries in order to comfort people. The most common use of therapy dogs is in hospitals. And the dog owners who have their dogs trained to do this then go out and do it as volunteers invited in by the facilities.”

“We are launching a cancer support group that will help patients with cancer and also cancer survivors. We hope to host our first public meeting in October. We plan to meet once a month, in the evening.

How did you become involved with the issue of breast cancer?

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 at the age of 40. I was already a fitness professional. And I found during my treatment that what really helped me, in addition to my medical treatment, was my exercise program and yoga and swimming. Being active and staying fit really aided my recovery. So I decided that in my role here, I would like to bring that same message and opportunity to the community.”

The company is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Casillas began her career at pharmaceutical giant Merck and later served as a marketing director at GlaxoSmithKline before forming two independent healthcare-related companies in her native Puerto Rico. She arrived in Weston with her family in 2011 to seek better medical care for her autistic son. “Weston welcomed and embraced me with open arms,” Casillas says.

s unlikely as a “destination restaurant” is within a mall, that’s precisely what the owners of Ciao Cucina and Bar are creating with their new Italian gastropub inside the open-air village of Promenade at Coconut Creek. “Our vision was to create a unique restaurant concept, something that embraced the spirit of an Italian restaurant and wasn’t ‘Italian,’ per se, with a different approach to classic Mediterranean cuisine,” says co-owner George Pappas, who conceptualized Ciao and also co-owns Ethos Greek Bistro in the same plaza.

That fresh approach to Italian fare takes the form of standout menu items that are

While no self-respecting Italian restaurant could be without pizza or pasta, Ciao’s bread, pizza and pasta dough is made fresh daily inside a glass-walled pasta studio, with pizzas cooked to Neapolitan-style perfection within brick ovens in full view, giving diners an entertaining look at how meals travel from kitchen to plate. What emerges from the talented culinary artists are masterful combinations such as the Underground Pizza ($12) topped with potato, gruyere and sweet onion, and Morning Sunshine ($13) that features Benton’s Bacon, soft egg, leeks, arugula and sour cream. The Rigatoni with braised short rib, mushrooms and asparagus ($19) is a must-order for the flavor combination and tenderness of the slow-braised rib.

Main courses range from Chicken Positano ($20), a lightly breaded chicken cutlet topped with eggplant, melted cheese and marinara sauce to the Dorade Portofino ($21) with Swiss chard, pilaf rice and Cioppino sauce.

Highly recommended is the grilled dry-aged pork porterhouse ($20) with mushrooms, arugula, olive and caper salsa, which is so mouthwatering, so flavorful, so divine that it alone is worth a drive to Ciao…especially from close-by Weston.

The restaurant features a carefully curated wine menu with several Italian selections and excellent wines by the glass, a fantastic assortment of beers including Sea Dog Wild Blueberry, Islamorada Ale and Kona Big Wave, local Hollywood Brewing Company draft selections and cocktails that put a spotlight on Italian liqueurs. lemon and fig jam is light and surprisingly enjoyable for non-bourbon drinkers, while the Cucumber Basil martini with its fresh lemon, cucumber juice, basil and raw sugar tastes like you should be frolicking in a happy Tuscan garden. Don’t miss the housemade Limoncello, which features a family recipe straight from Sorrento, Italy, courtesy of Ciao manager Antonio. Along with Ciao’s menu selections, it speaks volumes about the restaurant’s care for exceptional ingredients, quality and authenticity.

Open for lunch, Ciao’s menu features a well-priced mix of soups, salads, pizzas and paninis, and a special “Ciao Board” ($10) that comes with a pasta salad with a choice of protein and a house salad side. The restaurant turns up the volume at Brunch (not too loud… you can still have conversations) with a DJ that spins familiar ‘80s and ‘90s tunes alongside creative takes on brunch classics including a Waffle BLTE with Nueske bacon, lettuce, tomato and egg ($12), waffle and Nutella with caramelized banana ($10) and a Brussels sprouts and pancetta omelet ($12).

Popular sharing items from the dinner menu, as well as hand-crafted pizzas, panini, pastas, soups and salads round out the substantial brunch menu.

o invoke Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in a car review is borderline cliché—Look! A thing evolved!—but when said products come from a company that—how do we say this politely?—has evolved as slowly as Rolls-Royce has during more than a century in business, this whole “survival of the fittest” thing is worth bringing up. On one hand, Rolls-Royces can be seen as timeless, unquestionably superlative, each one an instant classic as soon as it leaves the Goodwood factory. On the other hand, the very idea of luxury has evolved: no longer is bigger necessarily better, so biggest is not always best. Baroque flourishes and opera lights are no longer in vogue, so how could cars that wear the veritable façade of the Parthenon on their noses reflect modern luxury? Well, toss the ascot, Jeeves.

Rolls-Royce is sexing it up with these lavish and lovely two-doors.

2017 ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN

Rolls-Royce considers the all-new Dawn convertible to be the sexiest car it has ever built, and we’re hard-pressed to disagree. The long, broad hood, gleaming grille, slab-sided body and rear-hinged “coach” doors instantly identify it as a Rolls, but with its gently rising rear fenders—which Rolls calls “the feminine hips of Dawn”—the Dawn appears less formal and more sensuous than other Rolls-Royces, including the Wraith coupe with which it shares its underpinnings. Should storm clouds fill the sky, the six-layer fabric roof rises in utter silence at speeds

up to 31 miles per hour, sealing the cabin in 22 seconds. Even better, the roof ’s low silhouette subtracts exactly none of its innate beauty.

While most convertibles compromise rear seat space to make room for their folding roof, the Dawn is a true four-seater, welcoming fully grown adults in any of its four deeply padded seats. The buttery hides, gleaming aluminum, polished metal and book-faced wood veneers are arranged almost exactly as in the Wraith, with a similar suite of infotainment features offered as well. But whereas the Wraith’s sloping roof and thick rear pillars keeps its cabin private, the Dawn puts its opulence on full display once that top goes down, even extending the wood veneers beyond the rear seats to the tonneau cover.

Underneath that long bonnet (that’s Brit-speak for hood) is a 563-hp V-12 that can whisk the nearly three-ton convertible to 60 mph in under five seconds in near silence. It’s a lovely creature that will be RollsRoyce’s only convertible, now that the larger, more old-school Phantom Drophead Coupe has been discontinued.

2017 ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH

With its fixed, thickly styled fastback roofline, the recently refreshed Wraith is a far more intimate and personal vehicle than the Dawn, though much of what’s under the skin is the same. The side windows are large and pillar-less, creating that oh-so-sexy full window opening when all side glass is lowered, but close �em and all other cars on the road might has well be in another universe.

A subtly restyled nose gives the Wraith a slightly cleaner look than before, and its interior architecture is nearly identical to the Dawn, thus presenting customers with the same almost infinite design opportunities. That said, only the Wraith is being offered with Rolls’ new “Black Badge” treatments for 2017, featuring dramatic interior and exterior color combinations such as black with deep blue or purple interiors.

The Wraith is also offered with Rolls’ trick “Starlight” headliner, which embeds tiny fiberoptic lights in the padded ceiling in the arrangement of one’s choice, no matter how complex.

The Wraith is powered by the same V-12 found in the Dawn, only goosed to 624 hp. It is, ostensibly, the sportiest Rolls-Royce in the lineup, and, as such, must be the most powerful. The exhaust note is somewhat more audible in this car than the Dawn, if only on account of better insulation allowing the sound to come through in a more deliberate way. It also allows a bit more road feel than Rolls’ sedans, more in keeping with the tastes of today’s drivers, who generally like to know what sort of road surfaces they’re traveling over. And being somewhat lighter than the Dawn, it’s a bit more nimble, too.

With strong performance, a modicum of road feel and sleek styling, these two-door Rollers signify that Rolls-Royce is indeed adaptable to a changing environment. Darwin would be proud.
