publisher’s letter

It is extremely gratifying to be looking ahead to year three, and equally pleasing to reflect back at how we got here. It seems like yesterday our premiere issue with Sofia Vergara on the cover made its debut in Weston. That issue also featured Ed and Tracy Dikes of Weston’s Jewelers, Rick and Rita Case and the grand opening of their Volkswagen dealership, Patty LaBella of PAL Clinic, and Karina Cristancho of Circles Enterprises Inc. I did not know these people in November of 2013, and now I consider myself fortunate to have forged strong bonds with all of them. I also appreciate the advertisers who believed in our vision from day one and still remain with us to this day, like Lexus of Pembroke Pines, Cleveland Clinic, Weston Jewelers, Teacups Puppies & Boutiques, The Weston Town Center, Residence Inn Marriott and Town Place Suites, Aventura Eye Specialists, Weston Town Center Executive Suites, and Mallardi’s Tuscan Grill. You will read about our exciting news in the editor’s letter penned by Lori Capullo. From the start, she and her talented team of writers, photographers, and creative directors have done an outstanding job evolving this publication. I’m excited to share her vision of what lies ahead for our readers and advertisers. As we all prepare for the holiday, I need to thank the staff at Larel Media, who work diligently to add a little joy to all in the Weston area. From my family to yours, have a Happy Thanksgiving.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN TOWN & ITS SURROUNDS…

Speaking Your Language

Communication is key to your comfort—and care—at Advanced OB/GYN Institute.

The mission of Glamopolitan owners Ricardo Flasz and Veronica Cohen is to give their clients the ultimate beauty experience.

everything OLD is NEWagain The former Helen Charles Salon has gotten a makeover. Enter Glamopolitan.

Your phone isn’t the only thing begging for an upgrade. Your salon of choice should offer every equivalent of a bell and whistle, too—it should be a one-stop shop, if you will. Husband-and-wife team Ricardo Flasz and Veronica Cohen know that, and they’ve got you covered with Glamopolitan, their reincarnation of the Helen Charles Salon London in the Weston Town Center. “We bought it from Helen and Jeff about a year and a half ago, in July 2014,” Ricardo says. “We were operating it to learn the ropes and the clients and the services and to feel the pulse of the market, and once we felt we were ready to make it our own and give Weston what it needs, we closed for about 10 days to remodel, rebrand and rename.” What the couple learned in that period was that, while plenty of salons in the area provide great results in hair, body, skin and nail services, not a lot of them focus on what Flasz calls “the experience.” “So what we’re trying to accomplish is to give Westonites the great and consistent experience they expect,” he explains. “It’s not just about having experienced professionals, but it’s knowing what the customers want, offering beverages and a snack, and having it be a one-stop shop for both beauty and wellness.” Veronica, a former model in Europe for major brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and BCBG who holds a bachelors degree in virtual design and previously owned two retail stores, was the ideal person to design the concept. “Our name is Glamopolitan Beauty,” Ricardo points out. “It’s a lounge concept, not a salon. This is the place to come in and relax.” And walk out having taken care of just about every beauty need you might have: hair sculpting, styling, cutting, texturing and treatments; facials, scrubs and wraps for the face; massages; spray tanning; waxing and threading; nails—everything from standard manicures to gel, acrylics and pedicures—and even makeup. The couple, who relocated to Weston two years ago from Venezuela and have two young children, love the area and are excited about the venture. Glamopolitan Beauty Lounge is located at 1660 Market St., Weston, 954-372-2810; www.westonhairsalon.com.

Miami Dolphins legends and top chefs get set to compete at the 6th annual John Offerdahl’s Broward Health Gridiron Grill-Off Food & Wine Festival. 34

NOVEMBER 2015

The sixth annual John Offerdahl’s Broward Health Gridiron Grill-Off Food & Wine Festival” is promising a bunch of fun new additions this year, including first-time restaurant partners, a craft beer experience, an expanded Guy Harvey’s Sustainable Seafood Village and a celebrity guest in the form of Adam Richman. “We are fired up to deliver new and exciting elements each year that exceed the expectations of our attendees,” says event founder and former Miami Dolphins linebacker Offerdahl.

Donna Piro recalls when she and her partner, Eleonora Bonfini, decided they wanted an aquarium. “We started with a 14-gallon tank,” she says. “But then we kept going. We eventually went from a 14-gallon to a 90-gallon, and before you know it, we were inundated.” Their growing passion for exotic corals and marine life eventually prompted the pair, who are also the owners of TeaCups Puppies and Boutique, to seek retail space in which they could sell to the public. Then they had another idea that made more sense to them. “We decided to move locations and build out the store,” she says, of

“The festival has become a culinary tradition in South Florida and we take great pride in making it the best it can be to Feed the Needs of Kids in Crisis.” This year, new restaurants will join the competition, including The Oceanaire Seafood Room and Naked Taco of Miami, Rebel House of Boca Raton and Piccolo Ristorante, and Beauty and the Feast in Fort Lauderdale. The Samuel Adams Craft Beer Garden will offer samples of Samuel Adams brews and other craft beer brands, and Guy Harvey’s Sustainable Seafood Village will be expanded to include an educational and interactive exhibition. Author and

TV personality Adam Richman (from Travel Channel’s Man Finds Food and NBC’s Food Fighters) will be signing copies of his new book, Straight Up Tasty, and cooking one of its recipes with Offerdahl. All of the event’s net proceeds will benefit Offerdahl’s Hand-Off Foundation and its mission to “Feed the Needs of Kids in Crisis.” The Festival is set for Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater, 1806 NE 6 St.. Regular Grand Grill-Off tickets are $85 each; the $125 VIP ticket package includes a signed copy of Richman’s book and early access into the Grand Grill-Off starting at noon. HEALTH:

SaltSuite October through May is flu season, so get your flu shot tout de suite. But if you’re too late or you just can’t fend it off, head over to SaltSuite. Their salt rooms help relieve flu symptoms and promote easier breathing through halotherapy—aka salt therapy—a holistic method that recreates the microclimate of a salt cave. Jamie Stafford, owner of SaltSuite locations in Delray Beach, Lake Worth and Palm Beach Gardens, says, “Flu season can be miserable, and if one person in the family has it, chances are the rest of the family will get it, too. People have found temporary relief from the breathing issues related to the seasonal flu from as little as a single session at the SaltSuite.” One 45-minute session is $35; unlimited monthly plans start at $75. Parentblocked With the new app ParentBlocked, parents can manage their kids’ Android phone/tablet use 24 hours a day. With one click, parents will have full control over their kids’ devices and able to “lock” any phone in a multitude of scenarios—like during school hours and homework time—but more importantly, it prevents their ability to text while driving, as the phone automatically shuts down once the car exceeds 10 mph. While the phone is locked, they will be able to dial 911 and an agreed-upon list of contacts in case of any emergency. They will not be able to text, call or participate in social media during the ‘blocked times’ specified by their parents.

Place the microfiber cleaning pad on the W830, switch it to “ON”, and place it on the window. The gadget also has sensors to stop it from moving across window frames and identifies window edges and obstacles. It’s all yours for $399.99; just visit www.ecovacsrobotics.com.

DESIGN:

Marble everything

• Trend #1: PORCELAIN FLOORS “The porcelain comes in many different plank lengths and widths. To change it up and make it different from the typical straight-and-staggered layout, try going with a herringbone cut instead,” suggests Bleustein. “It becomes different, dramatic, and most importantly, dimensional.”

Even phone cases. Obviously not real marble, though…that would get a little unwieldy. Check out the marble-print phone case from Native Union; at www.nativeunion.com.

HOME DÉCOR:

Shake yours up Want something cool and on trend to shake up your décor, but don’t know where to start? Never fear: Sheryl Bleustein is here. The namesake designer behind Sheryl Bleustein Interiors on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale shares her expert tips on the matter.

• Trend #2: POP OF COLOR “We all love the clean, sleek look,” Bleustein says. “However, to add a ‘wow factor,’ throw in a touch of fun color. It adds so much, and the design still remains elegant and yet steps things up.”

• Trend #3: ROMANCE THE STONES Get way from using the same old materials in the kitchen backsplash. “We’ve all seen quartz, marble and granite countertops and backsplashes,” Bleustein says. “Using recycled glass, frosted glass, clear or colored and/or a wood backsplash presents a timeless, dramatic, and very clean look.”

ounded in 2013 by the husband-and-wife team of Andy and Claudia Silva, Yacht Consulting Group, which is based as the landmark Eden Roc Resort in Miami Beach, has quickly established itself as one of South Florida’s most respected and sought after yacht brokers. Sales manager Claudia Silva has been in the industry for 15 years. “I used to work for Allied Richard Bertram, which was a brokerage that was located right across the street from the Bertram yacht factory,” she says. “It was one of the biggest yacht brokerage firms in Miami at the time, and for five years I was an assistant to the vice president of sales.” Andy Silva, who serves as president of Yacht Consulting Group, has been in the yacht business for a decade. “He started as a captain,” Claudia says. “That’s how we met back in 2006. And then he became a broker at another brokerage firm. We were married in 2012.” Andy, a former auto mechanic teacher, worked for Toyota for 10 years. Helping people work with their yachts—“being the mechanic,” Claudia says—is really what he does for the business. “The thing that sets us apart is that we offer onestop service, including parts and supplies,” she explains. “And Andy educates people about their yachts. That really is a different way of looking at the business. Most brokers are just focused on buying and selling.” The company’s inventory is vast and varied, from all the leading yacht builders. “We currently have listed everything from a 2005 25-foot Anacapri 25 Open for $45,000 and a 2008 28-foot Sea Ray 280 Sundancer for $70.000, all the way up to a 2014 76-foot Maiora 23 Meter for $3.2 million and a 2008 86-foot Dominator 860 Fly for $3.495 million,” Claudia says. “We sell everything from smaller comfortable fishing boats all the way up to major yachts from the best builders in the world.” And that’s what any seafaring, yacht-pursuing consumer should know about Yacht Consulting Group.

erennially ranked as one of the top hospitals in the Sunshine State, Cleveland Clinic Florida (CCF), is a not-for-profit, multi-specialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. With facilities in Weston, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Parkland, CCF has a staff of 230 physicians with expertise in 35 specialties. In July, for the sixth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked CCF among the best hospitals in the region—#3 among 66 hospitals in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area and number 9 among more than 260 hospitals in Florida. In September, CCF announced a $302 million expansion, tentatively scheduled for completion in 2018, which will include extensive additions to its Weston campus. “When you look at our occupancy rates, we have one of the highest in Broward County,” says chief operating officer Ozzie Delgado. “That tells us there is steady and growing demand from patients who want to come to Cleveland Clinic. So the expansion is essentially a reaction to that demand.” That brand awareness has always been there because of the reputation of Cleveland Clinic Ohio, but the demand in Florida continues to increase, which is the practical reason for the expan-

sion for the facility here.” Delgado stresses that one of the most important areas is in Cleveland Clinic’s emergency room services. “Our ER capacity has become stressed,” he says. “Right now, we look at about 35,000 ER visits a year, and we expect that to increase. Based on that, we understood that the level of our ER capacity was not where it needed to be. In a more general way, the level of overall services we have to provide is also increasing. For example, with the expansion of the ER comes a need for more inpatient beds, especially more critical care beds to meet the levels of complex care that we provide. As a result of that, we are doubling our critical care capacity.” Ancillary support services are also being expanded, including imaging, radiology and laboratory services, and three operating suites have been added. “The message we want to get out there is that we are always focused on creating and maintaining a patient-centered environment,” Delgado says. “We always put the patient at the center of everything we do. We not only believe in that model, but it is the foundation of everything we do and of our brand.” Cleveland Clinic, 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd., Weston, 954-659-5000; www.clevelandclinic.org.

countdown thanksgiving The only butterball on the table this year should be the turkey. Katina Taylor’s got your back with a go-to guide to keep your mind, body and soul in shape even during the most tempting times.

TO

FIND A HEALTHY BALANCE Finding your healthy balance of mind, body and soul is a daily exercise that starts within you. Your inner peace and happiness, or lack thereof, affects how you think, act and feel. Here are a few ways to get in balance and have more peace.

• MIND: Exercising gratitude helps us put into

perspective what is really important in our lives. It is important to feed our minds with positive thoughts and focus on the good. To start your day on the right foot, tell yourself a positive message before even getting out of bed.

• BODY: Eating healthy and exercising because we

love our bodies rather than because we hate them is a step toward balance. Exercise for how it makes you feel rather than just how you want to look. Sometimes we choose workouts that might be above our fitness level, so they feel like torture. Don’t quit. Try something else that’s not as challenging. With each day of activity, your body will get stronger and you will eventually want to push for more. Get to the point where you work out because you want to and not because you feel you have to.

• SOUL: Caring about others feeds our souls. We

will never experience true peace by being selfconsumed and only worrying about our own needs and wants. When we begin to genuinely care about other people, goodness and peace shines bright from within.

THE 5-MINUTE NO-EXCUSES BODY BLASTER From beginner to advanced, this quick, do anywhere/ anytime circuit will have you feeling a burst of power, strength and energy in no time. And there’s no equipment needed—you can do these at home, in the park, at the gym, etc. Set your timer to 5 minutes and see how many circuits you can do with proper form. Looks simple? Just try it.

all well & good MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR

(INCLUDING THE KIDS) • Organize a family dance-off, turn up the tunes and see who can bust out the best moves. Make this a scheduled weekly activity and see who reigns on the dance floor. Dancing is not only fun; it can be great exercise for the mind, body and soul.

• Be the activities director this Thanksgiving and get your Blueberry pecan salad with quinoa and goat cheese incorporates all three healthy ingredients.

FUEL YOURSELF To feel your best and have good energy, it’s imperative to fuel your body with healthy foods. (Pssst: I know Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and with it, temptation. My best advice: Nibble, don’t gobble. Slow down and mindfully eat and enjoy your food.) Here are 3 healthy ones to incorporate into your diet:

• DARK LEAFY GREENS Spinach, kale and Swiss

chard are an excellent source of minerals including iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. They’re also full of fiber and vitamins K, C, E and B. Make a salad, wrap it up, or add to soup, an omelet or a smoothie.

• BLUEBERRIES contain essential antioxidants and can be

enjoyed raw or baked into your favorite whole-grain muffins. These little fruits contain beta-carotene, lutein, vitamin C, folate, calcium, magnesium, potassium and fiber. Add to a smoothie, yogurt or oatmeal for a yummy healthy treat.

• QUINOA is a sprouted seed that is considered a whole grain. It

has nearly twice as much protein (8 grams per cup) as other grains and contains all 9 essential amino acids our bodies need to build lean muscle and recover from tough workouts. Eat it like a breakfast cereal with cinnamon and honey or make it in place of rice or pasta.

Debbie Zelman

CHARITY: Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer In April 2008, Debbie Zelman was 40 years old, a mother of three young children, married to a physician, and a practicing attorney with her own firm. But her life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer. “I was told my cancer was inoperable and incurable, and that I would need chemotherapy for the rest of my life,” she says. “At the time, there were very few treatment options for advanced stomach cancer, because it is not a common cancer in the United States. Therefore, my chance of being alive in five years was only 4 percent. I also realized that there were no resources available for stomach cancer patients and their families.” Zelman began to educate herself about the disease and seek the best available care. As she began to respond to treatment, she felt she could make a difference in the lives of other stomach cancer patients by using her education, experience and contacts in the community. So, in 2009, she founded Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer (DDF) to aggressively and immediately fund research into innovative, progressive, and cutting-edge treatments for stomach cancer, raise awareness about the disease; and provide information and assistance to stomach cancer patients, their families and caregivers. “It is my dream that, with increased funding, more treatments for stomach cancer will become available sooner and a cure will be found,” Zelman says. Today, Debbie’s Dream Foundation has allocated research grants totaling $350,000 and offers support services through a free Patient Resource Education Program (PREP). “Our staff assists inquirers with understanding their diagnosis, staging, treatment options, clinical trials, side effect management, research, management of the disease and more,” Zelman says. “Our PREP program has helped thousands of patients, families and caregivers around the world.” She also notes that November is Curing Stomach Cancer Month—and it is the perfect time to get involved in the fight against the disease. “I started the Gala of Hope almost five years ago with Jennifer, when my daughter was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy,” says Fiorenna. “Mia was born a perfect baby, then around her first birthday we noticed her muscles getting weaker and she was starting to lose her ability to crawl and to move. I visited over 20 specialists for exactly one year and no one could diagnose her. Finally, on her second birthday, her therapist suggested we test her for SMA. I was told to go home and make Mia comfortable since there was no cure and no treatment. That was unacceptable to me.” Jennifer’s daughter was diagnosed eight years ago with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2, just two days shy of her first birthday. “Cure SMA helped me by giving me booklets on how to care for my child on a day-to-day basis and what to do in respiratory distress to keep her alive; [it also] gave me lists of specialists to see and invited us to attend the annual conference for free to meet all the specialists and network with other families,” she says. Within a year of learning of her daughter’s illness, she started the South Florida Chapter of Cure SMA and has held fundraisers, support groups, holiday parties for the families affected, and also helped start the first SMA clinic in South Florida. To date, their efforts have raised more than $500,000; their goal this year is to raise an additional $100,000 and add more than $100,000 next month. “When we started the Gala of Hope five years ago, there were zero clinical trials,” says Fiorenna. “Today there are 17 drugs in trial to treat our children. I’m proud to be part of funding the research that lead to these drugs. But I’m just a mom trying to save her daughter’s life and all kids suffering from SMA, the number-one genetic killer in babies.” For more information, visit www.curesma.org.

Heather Geronemus

CHARITY: Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) In 2009, Heather Geronemus’s father was hit and killed by a drunk driver while crossing a South Florida street. “Nancy, a victims advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, reached out to me and took care of me when nobody else could,” says Geronemus, a public relations executive with Ultimate Software in Weston. “Here was a total stranger who walked into my life to help me and support me through an impossibly difficult time. I wanted more than anything to give back to MADD, but more importantly I wanted to be part of a world where nobody would need that call from a stranger ever again.” In 2010, Geronemus was offered the opportunity to chair a local fundraising event called Walk Like MADD, and she knew it was her opportunity to raise community awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. “Six years on, we have become the largest and fastest growing MADD 5K in the country,” she says. She started as the founding chairperson of Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K, and continues to chair the event, now in its sixth year. In that time, Broward has raised nearly three quarters of a million dollars for MADD. I work closely with local law enforcement to strengthen DUI enforcement in our county, and I serve on the MADD Southeast Florida Advisory Board, which works regionally to develop both support and awareness programs. “Broward has become nationally recognized for the commitment of our citizens and our community,” says Geronemus, who will begin serving on the MADD National Board of Directors in January 2016. “Every year I have the privilege to see the parents, kids, teachers, businesses, government leaders and law enforcement professionals line up at the start line for Walk Like MADD,” Geronemus says. “The feeling of our community coming together to stand up for safe streets and to support victims of drunk driving is just incredibly powerful. Each and every person at that starting line makes a choice to be there; a choice to support and protect their community. And in that moment, it is a choice to save a life. I can’t think of anything more important.” For more information, visit www.walklikemadd.org/fortlauderdale.

Sam Eppy & Craig Eppy CHARITIES: United Way of Broward County, Broward County Jewish Federation, ARC Broward, Junior Achievement Charity runs in the Eppy family blood. “We believe that when you are fortunate you have the obligation to take care of those that are not,” says Sam Eppy. “We also believe that you only get what you give.” Sam sits on the Board of the Broward County Jewish Federation, is the co-chair of their Young Leadership Division and one of the founding forty for Envision United, United Way’s newest donor group, and is the immediate past chair of their Young Leaders Society as well as an ARC Angel for ARC of Broward and a proud supporter of Junior Achievement. His brother, Craig, who is currently the Social Co-chair for the Young Leaders Division of the Jewish Federation, is a founding member of Envision United and sits on the membership committee, echoes Sam’s sentiments on the subject. Both credit their father, Joe (pictured, center), for instilling in them the importance of being altruistic. “My father has always been my role model for this,” Sam says. “He will spend time or money with anyone he thinks he can help, no matter what the payday might be. I look to emulate his charitable passion.” Both brothers, who work with their father in The Eppy Group financial firm in Fort Lauderdale, already do. Sam founded United Way of Broward’s Rock United event, the corporate battle of the bands hosted by Revolution Live, the fourth annual of which just took place in September. “I couldn’t be more excited to have built something that has made such a lasting impact on the community, socially and financially,” he says. And both are excited for the public to learn that ARC Broward, which works with the community to improve the lives and extend the opportunities of people with disabilities, is hosting its 3rd Annual Miss ARC Broward Pageant on November 15th. “We have supported ARC Broward for many years,” Sam says. “They have a remarkable program and I highly recommend everyone taking a tour. Your smile will be ear to ear.” Adds Craig, “One of our specialty areas is helping families that have a loved one with special needs. My father is a national expert. We have been able to provide advice and protection to thousands of families facing this issue.” For more information, visit www.eppygroup.com.

CHARITIES: I serve on the Board of Directors of 211 Broward, HANDY, ARC Broward, Impact Broward, Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, the Unsafe Structure Board for the City of Plantation and United Way of Broward County’s Envision Broward. I also serve on the Endowment Committees for the United Way of Broward County, ARC Broward and 211 Broward, Chair the March of Dimes Signature Chef Gala Committee and sit on the 20th Anniversary JEB BUSH Florida Classic Golf Tournament Committee to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He’s high energy, and he has to be, because Michael Wild is a very busy man. In addition to his role as a managing partner at the Plantation-based law firm Wild Felice & Pardo, he donates his time and energy to a plethora of foundations and organizations in need of help and support (see above). “There are so many wonderful causes, but what really attracted me to the nonprofit community was the connection I formed with the people involved,” he says. “These are people that give of themselves, not just in time and money, but in sweat and love. I have developed some of the most meaningful relationships of my life with some of the most wonderful people I could ever imagine to meet. These relationships have kept me engaged and led to my continued involvement in the Broward non-profit community. I would not trade these connections for anything in the world.” Beyond the seven non-profit Boards on which he currently sits and the multiple events he chairs, two of Wild’s most notable non-profit accomplishments have been the creation of United Way’s Envision Broward and the Captain 211 Mascot for 211 Broward. But, he says, “Every endeavor with the non-profits I work with makes me proud. It’s an honor to work with these charities. My creating United Way’s new affinity group, Envision Broward, is probably my proudest accomplishment. There are already 45 members and we have raised over $100,000 in less than one year since its creation.” For more information, visit www.wfplaw.com.

Henri Crockett CHARITY: Crockett Foundation President & CEO

“I started the Crockett Foundation in 2002 to inspire youth to dream and to push themselves to reach their full potential, because that’s what [South Florida orthopaedic surgeon] Dr. Daniel Kanell inspired me to do as a teenager after my father passed in 1991,” says entrepreneur and former NFL linebacker Henri Crockett. “My involvement with the Crockett Foundation still consists of all day-to-day duties. It’s important for me to always be involved on the ground level to ensure that the values that I have built this foundation on are still in place.” In addition to inspiring, the Crockett Foundation is also committed to improving the quality of life for youth and to helping families who need it gain access to free health screenings and medical professionals in order to decrease the incidence of health problems that plague so many minority populations, among them heart disease, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Crockett’s mentor and inspiration Dr. Kanell was honored this past June at the Crockett Foundation’s 3rd Annual Derby Days, the charity’s annual fundraiser. “Dr. Kanell gave me an opportunity to dream big,” Crockett says. “He gave me hope and confidence that I could do and be anything I wanted. He helped create an atmosphere and a mindset for me to be successful.” And through him, Crockett says, he learned that we are only bound by the limits of our own convictions. “We can transcend the script of a pre-defined story, and pave the way for the future that we design,” he says. “We just need to tap that power, that conviction, that determination within us.” For more information, visit crockettfoundation.org.

Kara Salsburg-Boehly CHARITY: Make-a-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida Kara Salsburg-Boehly got involved with Make-a-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida for one reason: “I love working and spending time with children and really wanted to make a meaningful difference, in some way, with kids’ lives,” she says. Today, she has been a wish grantor for about 20 years. “I thoroughly enjoy meeting the children, their families, and getting to know their unique stories—granting wishes is an extremely rewarding and fulfilling experience for me. A wish brings so much joy, not only to the wish kid, but to the whole family. The family suffers setbacks along with the wish child, and it’s very rewarding to see the family watch their child/ sibling experience something so exciting and fun.” After granting her first wish, she was hooked. “It was such a life-changing experience to witness the impact that one wish can have on a child,” she says. “My proudest moments have been when I see a wish kid’s face light up in disbelief that their impossible, out-of-reach dream is really happening. It takes the focus completely off of their illness for a period of time, and gives them hope that they can beat this. That makes me feel incredibly proud that I was a small part of that happiness and helping fulfill a dream come true.” For more information on Make-a-Wish Foundation, visit http://sfla.wish.org.

A new chapter in cancer care is here.

Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer, secondhand smoke, exposure to toxins, or a family history of lung cancer can also trigger the disease.

Bruno Bastos, MD

Cleveland Clinic Florida

Oncologist There is a false perception that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke, so lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as those with other types of cancer.

“There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Patients who have stopped smoking are still at an increased risk for lung cancer long before they receive a lung cancer diagnosis. “Additionally, the fact is that anyone can be exposed to toxins and develop lung cancer, so this is a disease that should concern everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has had a negative effect on lung cancer research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.

The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.

Same-day

appointments 855.324.8153

“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to tell their stories.” Despite the lack of funding for research, there has been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” Dr. Bastos said. “Genetic testing has helped researchers to develop therapies that target specific types of cancer cells.” Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, also are showing potential for treating lung cancer, Dr. Bastos said. These therapies already have been approved for treating skin cancer. Development of screening tools such as CT scans help with early identification of lung cancer, too, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

OR MANY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO are befuddled about what to do with the rest of their lives, Bank of America in Weston has come to the rescue. The bank has created programs available to high school students to help them gain work experience and build their résumés before heading off to college or to partake in other career-building programs. These opportunities also offer community leaders and business heads the chance to better develop their management skills. Programs like Student Leaders help connect community-minded high school juniors and seniors to employment, skills development and service. Other Bank of America programs like Neighborhood Builders award nonprofit leaders the chance to gain valuable skills and apply funding where it is most needed. “We have never had a clearer purpose of how to make the financial lives of our customers better,” says Bernard Hampton, Miami Area Executive in Retail Banking and Distribution and Fort Lauderdale Business and Integration Executive for Bank of America in Weston. “I spend time all year long with the Student Leaders program to offer eight-week paid summer internships. And our Neighborhood Builders helps create leaders while offering grants to nonprofits.” Since 2004, when both programs were created, the success story has been extraordinary. In an era of greed coupled with a rocky economy, both Student Leaders and Neighborhood Builders have flourished. Over the past 11 years, with $160 million invested, Bank of America has recognized more than 800 nonprofits across the country and connected 2,100 students to employment and service opportunities through Student Leaders programs. The bank has also provided leadership training to nearly 2,000 nonprofit leaders through Neighborhood Builders.

Hampton with 2013 Student Leader Rowanne Ali, who learned about the program on social media and said it led to “an amazing summer.”

student leaders In Broward County, 50 student leaders have participated in the Student Leadership program and 1,600 nonprofit leaders have completed the leadership training program. This year five high school juniors and seniors entered eight-week paid internships at the YMCA of Broward County through the Bank of America Student Leaders program. They worked 9 am to 5 pm, putting in 40-hour weeks. Other organizations involved over the years include Habitat for Humanity and Boys and Girls Clubs of America. As part of the summer internship, the students attended the week-long July National Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC, where they met other like-minded individuals and broadened their horizons. “This was one of the most amazing weeks of my life,” says Rowanne Ali, who attended Western High School in Davie and was a 2013 Student Leader. “I loved my time in Washington and had never met as many motivated people, ever. The other students from around the country far exceeded my expectations and passions. Some had already started their own nonprofits and even involved CEOs and their parents.” Ali, now 18, also loved the food, speakers and all that she learned in such a jam-packed week filled with 219 other students. “I have remained friends with many of the people I met in Washington,” she says. “We keep up with our progress in various programs. One girl was interested in setting up something for human sex trafficking.” While at the Weston YMCA during that summer, Ali interned in all departments including sports, swimming and tournaments. She had a glorious experience. “I read about this program on social media and it turned out to be an amazing summer,” she says. “I’m encouraging my younger sister, [who’s] in high school now, to apply for this internship.” Raul Garcia, a former student leader from Weston who formed part of the program in 2014 and also interned at the YMCA, felt the same as Aly about his exceptional experience. “The Student Leaders program helped me build leadership and networking skills at a very young age,” says Garcia, 19. “But more than that, it exposed me to ideas and people whom I thought I would never meet, like government officials during the Washington, DC, summit.”

“It is incredibly motivating to help youth grow and mature and also to aid others in need.” — Bernard Hampton

neighborhood builders Bank of America has also awarded 19 organizations $3.8 million since its Neighborhood Builders inception. The program began because Bank of America staffers heard repeatedly from their nonprofit partners that there was a need for unrestricted operating capital as well as leadership development. The leadership for the executive director and an emerging leader gives both a chance to develop their personal skills and organizational effectiveness while interacting with experts in the fields of philanthropy and leadership and building a network of nonprofit colleagues. For example, last year’s Bank of America Charitable Foundation named Feeding South Florida, a partner that serves Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, a Neighborhood Builder. The charity used the $200,000 grant to purchase a new 48-foot mobile freezer truck that transports perishables and healthier food options (fruits and vegetables) to the hungry in the community. That grant was part of a $461,500 collective investment the bank made last year in South Florida to address issues related to basic human services. Being selected as the 2014 Neighborhood Builder was a very humbling experience for the Feeding South Florida initiative. It was gratifying because it proved that Bank of America trusts the work the charity is doing to improve Broward County. “What makes this program so unique is the training, which is vital in helping us build our next level of leadership so we can be sustainable and continue to make a difference for those in need,” says Paco Velez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. Naturally, such positive feedback for the Bank of America youth and community programs is music to Hampton’s ears. Not only did he come to Bank of America in 2004, the year both of these programs launched, but he can see firsthand the success of his efforts. He knows that success breeds more good ideas, and more ways to help a broader segment of the population who need it. “It is incredibly motivating to help youth grow and mature and also to aid others in need,” says Hampton, whose own parents encouraged community involvement in the South Carolina area where he was raised. “This inspires the participants in these programs to contribute to the community. I see the passion from those people of all ages who have been involved, and it is infectious for our associates.” An ongoing program of “do good” goes a long way.

Ever been to Puerto Rico? Even though we consider ourselves world travelers—having hit the road or airways just about every month for the past 10 years—somehow, the U.S. territory just a little over 1,000 miles away had never made it onto our itinerary. It may be even stranger that we have family members and friends who are Puerto Rican, some actually born there, and yet we still hadn’t visited. And for no good reason, other than the fact that we were just always off someplace else. So when the opportunity to see the island—not just one aspect of it, but both the beach and Old San Juan, which friends had told me was very “romantic”— we couldn’t resist. And over the course of four days there, we took in as much as we possibly could at two of the best properties we could have.

condado plaza hilton

It’s rare that you take a vacation and start out at a beach resort only to switch gears halfway through and venture into the city, but that’s what we did, and it definitely rounded out our Puerto Rican experience. From El Conquistador, we were transported into San Juan to The Condado Plaza Hilton, which was originally designed as the Ponce de Leon Hotel by Morris Lapidus in 1960 and has been renovated to convey a contemporary vibe throughout. It’s situated on a lagoon-like inlet, so you can still sun and swim if you like, but it’s also on a city street, making its location one of the best things about it. We actually walked, as warm as it was in September—although the tradewinds make the weather here far more The Condado Plaza bearable at 88 degrees than Miami is the same Hilton makes up part time of year—about a half-mile from the hotel to of the urban skyline in San Juan, yet sits on the browse shops such as Cartier and Gucci, but diswater at the same time, covered that many of the neighboring boutiques bringing guests the best of both worlds. of this ilk had left in favor of the brand-new, sprawling and fabulous Mall of San Juan. Still, there are interesting little bars, restaurants and other lively spots to wander in and out of, and if you’re the energetic type, you can meander through the blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan and take in the numerous historic sites. Better yet, hire a tour guide from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Our guide, Antonio, was one of the most knowledgeable historians I had ever come across, and he had our group of eight rapt right up until we could no longer

take the aroma of mofongo wafting out from the nearby cafes. And by the way, I don’t care how disciplined you are or how strict your diet regimen, if you come to Puerto Rico and don’t indulge in this dietary staple here—consisting of mashed green plantains shaped and cooked with broth, garlic, olive oil and other ingredients ranging from shrimp to pork—you’ve eliminated one of the purest parts of the Puerto Rican experience. 999 Ashford Ave., San Juan, PR 00907, +1-787-721-1000; www.condadoplaza.hilton.com.

el conquistador What do you want from your Puerto Rican sojourn? Rest and relaxation? Action and adventure? Sun, sand and sea? If the answer is any or all of those, book your stay at El Conquistador Resort, perched atop the cliffs of Puerto Rican’s northeast coast. The Waldorf Astoria-owned property is almost a city unto itself, with 900+ rooms spread over 500 acres, and has so much to offer you really needn’t ever leave the property: a 26,000-square-foot spa; tennis courts and an Arthur Hills Golf Course and seven pools and an on-site El Coqui water park complete with lazy river, to start. No matter how long you stay, there’s no danger of tiring of the dining options, because there are 20 to choose from, ranging from super-casual to gourmet (if you eat at Chops Steakhouse, be sure to save room for the 11-layer chocolate cake—it’s insane). And this is not a place that leans either toDo everything or nothing at all ward families—for which it is ideal, to be at El Conquistador, from sunning and spa-ing to indulging sure—or adults. Rather, their mission is to your inner child on the slides accommodate everyone who wants to be at the onsite Coqui Water Park. there, and they’ll bend over backwards to do A funicular transports guests from the hilltop down to the it. Over and over again we were reminded lower-level restaurants, pools that “your stay can be customized however and ferry stop. you want it”, whether that means you’ve got a vegan in your party with special dining requirements, or you want the resort to set up particular activities for you before you arrive, or you’d like to have a car available to tool around in—those are the tip of the iceberg. (One TripAdvisor reviewer recounts how he asked the front desk to have someone move the refrigerator from the bathroom into the bedroom and a staff member appeared to do it “in two minutes!!” This is the norm, not the exception, here.) If you do go, be sure to take the ferry to Palomino Island, the resort’s private island where you can choose to paddle board, kayak, jump a wave runner, snorkel or dive, or best of all, laze on a lounge chair beneath an umbrella sipping their specialty drink, the Palomino Adventure, a frozen delight that marries a piña colada—a Puerto Rican original—with a mojito. 1000 El Conquistador Ave., Fajardo, PR 00738, +1-787-863-1000; www.hilton.com/El_Conquistador.

ou know how casinos have no clocks and can sweep you up into their atmosphere so you lose track of time and get absorbed into the relaxation of it all, as if you’re in another world completely? That’s about the same vibe you’ll find at Smoke on the Water, if you haven’t discovered it already. But instead of slot machines, roulette wheels and craps tables, you’ll find comfy chairs and cozy sofas, flat-screen TVs, a neighborly bar, and a 1,000-square-foot humidor packed with just about every variety of premium cigar a smoker could want. No less than Cigar Aficionado has noted what they called its “superb selection of brands,” including rare ones such as Arturo Fuente Añejo and Fuente Fuente OpusX. Even the selection of lighters is extensive, along with other cigar accessories. If cigars aren’t your thing, there are 30 flavors of shisha, the molasses-based tobacco mix, to choose from for the Hookah, and even a resident tobacco master, Mauricio, to make you your own personal blend. And then there’s the full bar, where master mixologists like Jeremiah James (“Miah” for short) will help you pair up the proper spirit with your smoke, set you up with the shots of your choice, issue a nice ice cold beer or mix you up a martini. Owner Dan Husley previously owned three stores in Mississippi, all of which were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. All’s well that ends well—Husley’s relocation to Weston brought all of us an excellent new place to chill. Smoke on the Water, 1630 Bell Tower Lane, Weston, 954-217-1994; www.cigarbarweston.com.

At Tanzy in Boca Raton, the combination of ambience, insanely good cuisine and off-the-chain cocktails make for a winning experience.

ith the explosion over the past few years of restaurants in South Florida—whether chef-driven or based on some bizarre form of cuisine involving some kind of science—the neighborhood joint has all but disappeared from the culinary map. That’s not to say that Tanzy, built into the first floor of the iPic Theater in Boca Raton’s upscale Mizner Park, is some hole in the wall where the bartender will call out your name when you walk in, because it certainly isn’t. But this restaurant, despite a flat-out beautiful décor, with a cozy lounge nestled beneath an open cave of twisty tree branches, lighted (artificial) trees in the center of the dining room, comfortable leather and wood appointments and servers decked out in LBD’s, still somehow manages to feel homey. Not that novelty items like nitrogen drinks aren’t available here, because they are. The “-196°” section features everything from light options, like the Cham-

pagne Crush with lemon-infused vodka, Moët, Grand Marnier and ginger-citrus sorbet, to heavier picks that could almost serve as a dessert, like the Chocolate Paradise with Amaretto, Bailey’s, Chocolacello and chocolate syrup. If you’re going to indulge in the latter, you likely won’t have enough room to fully experience the food, which would be a shame, so proceed with caution. After several visits to Tanzy, spurred by a rapidly acquired addiction to the “Mozzas” on the menu—combinations of charcuterie with burrata, dried figs, crispy prosciutto and the like—one starts to crave some of the dishes that will inevitably become favorites. For us, that would include the Tuscan Kale Salad with pieces of navel orange, pine nuts, pickled red onions, black currants and dressed lightly in citrus vinaigrette. With kale salad on every menu these days, it’s heartening to find

one that is tender but not overdressed and has just the right combination of ingredients to add a little life to these ubiquitous greens. What’s billed simply as Grilled Calamari is actually sliced into thin, extremely soft (read: not rubbery) slices, layered atop artichokes and roasted tomatoes and flecked with capers. Of the entrées, yellowtail snapper served atop wilted escarole and preserved lemon and flavored with a vermentino wine sauce is light yet flavorful. Pan-seared scallops came perfectly textured, and the accompanying roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon lardons juxtaposed that delicate texture. A 16-oz. ribeye at first came out slightly more cooked than ordered, but when we asked to have the matter corrected, the staff practically tripped over themselves to do so. Not one but two separate managers came over to apologize before a brand-new plate with a perfectly cooked steak appeared to save the experience. (And the fingerling potatoes, as simple as they are, were crisp and as addictive as French fries.) After taking in a Mozza, appetizers and the generously portioned entrées, the thought of dessert might send your eyes rolling and even elicit a groan. But do yourself a favor and find a way to at least share one or two here (all the sweets are large enough to share here). The specialty at Tanzy is the Red Velvet Bread Pudding, but to us, the Panna Cotta—with spiced apples and amaretti crumble on top— was some of the best, if not the best, panna cotta we’ve ever crossed spoons over. It was, quite simply sublime. And it’s one of the many reasons Tanzy keeps drawing us back, even though it’s a 40-minute drive away. Try it—you’ll see. Here’s Our Beef

With all the fancy-pants eateries in South Florida, a burger lover can always find what he’s looking for—but sometimes a $35 Wagyu beef patty topped with foie gras is not it. Enter the Tilted Kilt, a good old-fashioned sports-themed pub with Scottish, Irish and English roots where a selection of Big Arse Burgers includes varieties like the Inferno—with grilled jalapeños, pepper jack cheese and the eatery’s signature Kilt Burner Mayo—and the Pub Fried Egg Burger, among others. Nachos, wings, and pub grub such as Classic Fish & Chips and Shepherd’s Pie round out the menu, along with a looong list of beers, whiskey, spirits and killer cocktails like Tilted Tea, a mix of Long Island Iced Tea kicked up a notch with Tanqueray, Cruzan Light Rum, Three Olives vodka and Michael Collins Irish Whiskey. And now that the holidays are here, you have the best excuse possible to take platters of their goodies home: from a design-your-own Cheese Platter (three of your fave cheeses, two accompaniments, fresh baguette and fresh fruit) to a 2-lb. homemade cheese torta consisting of brie layers sandwiched with sweets, they’ve got you covered for any occasion. Burlock Coast is promising to be the hot SoFlo restaurant of the season. The restaurant just opened in November on the ground floor of The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale with chef de cuisine Gavin Pera at the helm. “Smart sourcing is the key to any smart menu,” says Pera, when asked about his menu. “We wanted to source as much as possible from our local purveyors, but take it one step further and partner with local artisans and give them an opportunity to spotlight the amazing things they’re doing.” To wit: freshly baked breads by South Florida’s revered Zak the Baker will be for sale daily in the marketplace, and Panther Coffee devotees can get a hot cup to go or buy a bag of roasted beans for home brewing. “We have some truly talented people in South Florida producing delicious food and drink with passion and an attention to detail we admire,” Pera adds. “We love what they’re about and aim to do the same with what comes out of our kitchen and bar.” Burlock Coast, 1 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., 954-302-6460; www.burlockcoast.com.

Decisions, Decisions:

Audi A6 A7

W

ith Audi’s trademark elegant lines and standard-setting interior quality offered in a vast range of shapes and sizes ranging from the perky TT sports car to the grand Q7 SUV, deciding which is the best match can be challenging even for the most ardent of Audiphiles. Even after you’ve decided between a car versus an SUV body style, and compact versus full-size, you may still have decisions to make. If, say, you’ve settled on a mid-size car, do you take the A6 sedan, or the sassy A7 hatchback? Beyond door count, what’s the difference? First, let’s cover the A6. As its name implies, the A6 splits the difference between the compact A4 and the limousine-like A8 in the Audi sedan lineup. But don’t let its middle-child status fool you into thinking it is any less splendid a creature than the A8 flagship. Sure, it’s a couple of inches narrower, and a bit shorter in length—which translates into

easier garage-ability—but in most respects it is nearly as luxurious, offering roughly 95 percent of the A8’s cushy spoils and brandishing styling that was updated for 2016 with rocket age-inspired headlamps and taillamps and new wheels and bumpers. Inside, the A6 offers an available B&O sound system, inlaid wood veneers, nappa leather, Google maps-equipped navigation, a 4G internet connection and materials that are the envy of the automotive industry. Yet, even in the case of the lower-spec models, there’s no sense of cost-cutting; even the standard leatherette seats are absolutely top-grade, and the optional semi-analine leather feels downright naughty. Starting well under $50K, the base A6 is powered by a very fuelefficient, turbocharged gas four-cylinder, while those with a penchant for power and a bit more coin may want to upgrade to the supercharged V6-powered 3.0T model or a torque-y diesel. Sportier types will definitely

gravitate to the S6, with its 450-hp turbocharged V-8 and snug adaptive suspension, though its base price of about $72K is considerably headier than the others. On the road, the A6 offers the planted feel and crisp steering for which German cars have become famous. All but the entry model come standard with all-wheel drive, which is an appreciable asset whether you’ll be traversing the snow-capped Rockies or negotiating a torrential Florida downpour. What could be more appealing than that? Well, for some, the A7. Audi bravely set out to make the hatchback A7 more practical and even sexier than the A6. And by most accounts, Audi has succeeded. The A7 casts roughly the same shadow as the A6 and contains most of the same parts under its slinkylooking skin, which was similarly updated for 2016. The interior is virtually identical to that of the A6, but the sloping rear window, tapering body, unique window shapes and frameless door glass impart the exterior with considerably more of an edge than the more conservative A6.

108

NOVEMBER 2015

This A7’s lower roof exacts a measure of rear seat space, so keep that in mind if you frequently bring taller folks around with you to the fine restaurants, shopping malls and golf courses where the A7 looks right at home. What it lacks in the rear seat, however, it makes up for in utility with its large, power hatchback and long, flat cargo floor—also a boon for those same shopping and golfing trips. Like the A6, the A7 is offered with an array of engines, though it skips the A6’s base, turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder and adds an even more powerful, supercar-quick model, the 560-hp RS7, at the top of the range. Not surprisingly, prices start higher than the A6, with the base A7 diesel starting just under $60K and the RS7 commanding nearly $110K. As close as they are in size and fitments, it’s hard to imagine going wrong with either the A6 or the A7. Both embody everything that brings people to the Audi brand to begin with, and wrap it all in timelessly styled packages. One is just a little sexier than the other.

Advantage A6: • Timeless styling • Spacious rear seat • Attractively priced base model

V.

Advantage A7: • Low-slung fastback style • Hatchback versatility • Powerful standard engines • Available 550-hp RS7 model

Mayor Dan Stermer What question have you never been asked, that you wish you had? Interesting. I’ve talked about where I come from, where I grew up, where I used to work, why moved, why I do what I do, my kids… So what’s your favorite thing to talk about? Probably my kids. Tell me about them. My oldest is 23, and he’s a secondyear law student at UM. The middle one is my princess; she’s a senior at FSU. And my youngest is 16 and a junior at Cypress Bay. So you have a son who’s 23. Do you remember being 23? Uh…. I know; it was a couple of years ago. Yeah. I was in law school. I know we’re not supposed to ask women how old they are but I’m not sure what the rule is with men… It’s OK. I’m 53. That was 30 years ago. You’re 23 years old, and someone says, “Dan, where do you see yourself in 30 years?” What did you think back then? I knew I was going to be a lawyer; that I knew. I was a prosecutor. I did that in the Bronx for eight years and then down here for the attorney general for four and a half years. I went from dealing with murderers and drug dealers to dealing with people who rip you off. So I’ve seen the whole spectrum when it comes to prosecuting cases. Now I put my legal hat on sideways, but it’s funny: where I grew up in Massapequa, on the south shore of Long Island, my friends’ parents would always tell me, “Dan, someday you’re going to be the mayor of our town.” I moved 1,300 miles away, but I guess it worked out. And now what would you say is the biggest challenge for you? Probably just letting things happen, or leaving them to others and not

getting involved. I look past this city and look to the county, the region and the state to do things, because I think we can leave this place better than how we found it. It goes beyond just the city. Where is your favorite place to go? Here. No, to travel to. I like to be here. You need to go somewhere… I wouldn’t mind going to one of the islands, to a beach. To relax. Because I’m guessing you probably don’t get a lot of time, with the mayor situation, to relax. St. Augustine, and go sit at Amelia Island at the beach. But it could be anywhere. So, social media—have to touch on that. Because I gotta tell you, it blows my mind that there’s such access to every movement made and that people are actually doing all the things they’re doing… Which is why I don’t do it. No Twitter, no Facebook, no Instagram. No Facebook? No. You’ll find me on LinkedIn, but that’s more business-related. Other than that, nope. It’s not like I hide—you can Google me, I’m at the city, or I go to Publix or I’m at the soccer field with my son at night, and people come up to me. But social media, I can’t control it. I know when I say or do something. But I can’t control if someone else puts something out there or says something that’s not true. I can’t fix it, so I choose not to engage in it. If you’ve got something to say to me, call me, email me…but I’m not getting involved in what I can’t control. And what are you most passionate about personally? I know your kids, but I mean something within Dan Stermer. Trying to be happy. What’s your definition of that? Being at peace. Less stress. Things are moving in the right direction. Work is good, kids are good, family’s good—all those things.
