ersonalized in the truest sense of the word, the spaces in which Sheryl Bleustein creates are vividly original and flawlessly reflect the passions, pursuits and lifestyles of her clients. “I never do anything twice,” asserts Bleustein. “Every project is a new canvas where I can turn each client’s unique dream into a reality.” With an obsession for detail, Bleustein-created interiors are infused with custom crafted luxuries, such as electric cabinets and drawers for a gourmet chef; a sumptuous vanity that opens up as jewelry storage; and an extravagant closet for a watch collector. An industry icon for more than 21 years, Bleustein’s innate sense of proportion, eye for exquisite details and finishes, and relentless quest for perfection has earned her a position as one the most sought-after interior designers in South Florida and commissions for discerning clients worldwide. “I love, love what I do,” enthuses Bleustein. “I will do anything and everything for my client.” Delivering luxury residential interior design services to an elite clientele, from celebrities to CEOs, Bleustein places great importance on attentive, one-on-one service of the highest quality, believing the process is as critical as the result: “It is my goal to achieve a beautiful home that is as luxurious to live in as it is to look at; and I want this to be an enjoyable journey for my client,” she says.

fall
forward Not to sound cliché, but it really is hard to believe another summer has come to an end. The heat may still be in full force, but fall is here—and in South Florida, that means the start of “season.” Even though the lines have blurred in recent years between those former ghost-town summer months and the point where the throngs begin flooding in, the truth is, we still do have a “season,” because there are so many rituals and events that come along with that on an annual basis: gala season, football season, basketball season, the holiday season and of course, performing arts and concert season. One of the events we’ll be looking forward to most in that last category is the return to town of one of our local favorites—and this month’s cover star— Marc Anthony, who will be packing fans into the America Airlines Arena for two nights in October. (A word to the wise: grab your tickets sooner rather than later.) But even as we kick off this magnificent mayhem, welcoming pro athletes back into our living rooms on Sundays, Broadway stars to the stages, and galas galore, the goings-on around us in Weston and its surrounding
communities continue to be pretty exciting, too. If you’re at all doubtful, check out five of our fascinating neighbors who are doing great things—and that’s not an exaggeration—in our feature “Making Waves,” on page 76. To get a look at how Pompano Beach is being rejuvenated, turn to our “Real Estate” section on page 58. And for some unexpected but welcome advice on how to get the most out of your home décor efforts with the least amount of stress, flip to “New & Improved” on page 86. And that’s just a sampling of what this issue has to offer, let alone this coming season. Enjoy the issue.

Q&A with
Maria Penaloza
Q:1
Why do you like the real estate business? “You get to see a side of people’s lives that is very positive. For example, you see them as their families are growing and they need a bigger home. Or you see couples that are past the age when they have raised their kids and they want to retire. To see people in those kinds of circumstances is a lovely thing and I enjoy being able to help them.”
Q:2 Michelle Ramer
“One thing that is unique about our company is that it was founded and is run by Hispanic women. And we are very proud of that. We like to consider ourselves pioneers. Even though there are examples of women who were pioneers in other industries, not many real estate brokerages are owned by women. So that makes us different. Another thing that makes us different is that our philosophy is the opposite of most brokers, who think agents work for them. Ours is that we work for our agents.”

Maria Penaloza, co-founder of 10-year-old Broker’s Real Estate Broward, prides herself on her stellar reputation. Born in Venezuela, she came to the US in 1978 at the age of four. After returning to Venezuela and earning a law degree, she came back to Florida and became a licensed real estate agent in 2005. In 2010, she became a licensed broker. Her company, which has offices in Aventura and the Brickell district of Miami, services buyers and sellers in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. In August 2014, Penaloza opened the Weston office and serves as its in-house broker. Today, the expert help of a good broker is more important than ever, she says. “And that’s because the Miami real estate market is now very competitive.” Broker’s Real Estate Broward is located at 2225 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 9, in Weston. For more information, call 954.384.1616 or visit brokersinvestments.com.
“The most important thing is to look for someone you know you can trust. That’s because a real estate buyer is making one of the most important decisions they will ever make in their life.” 36
inWeston Magazine
What sets you apart from other real estate brokers?
Q:3
What’s the number-one thing buyers or sellers should look for in a broker? “The most important thing is to look for someone you know you can trust. That’s important because a real estate buyer is making one of the most important decisions they will ever make in their life. So in order to be comfortable, you need to work with people who really know what they’re doing. And you also need to know that your broker is honest, because there are plenty of people who know a lot, but they’re not very honest.”
Q:4
What do your clients appreciate most about you? “The most common thing I hear from clients is usually that they appreciate me going the extra mile to make sure that their transactions actually go through to completion. I like to make sure the process is as stress-free as possible. Of course, it’s always stressful when you’re buying or selling a home. But as long as the client feels you are giving them the best possible service and paying attention to every little detail, then they experience less stress and they’re happy.”

Wheel Style Bungalow 33 reinterprets the shopping experience By Bringing the Boutique to you. Much like food trucks have mastered delivering quality cuisine right from the street, a new “Bou-Truck” movement is underway. To wit: Bungalow 33 is an 18x7-foot roving boutique that will deliver a collection of the latest fashions—plus select shoes, jewelry and other accessories—right to your door. “The concept provides an ever-changing aspect that one doesn’t get with a standing retail location,” points out owner Michelle Applebaum, “and isn’t the new and exciting the very essence of fashion?” The air-conditioned truck houses an industrial-meets-glam décor that includes crystal flush lighting, wood floors, and dressing areas with curved draping; there’s even a mini lounge with a flat-screen TV and refreshment bar. The inventory is ever-revolving with mid-priced labels—think $19$180—including designers Donna Mizani, Style Stalker, RD Style, Wilde Heart, Saylor, Madison Square, L’Atiste, jewelry artist Cecilia Gonzalez, among others. Events, pop-ups, and exclusive perks can be tracked by following the boutique’s social media sites on Instagram and Facebook @bungalow33boutique. MAKING ARRANGEMENTS BB of Flowers specializes in innovative floral designs for every occasion. Fashion trends are seasonal, yes—but color palettes also change with the seasons when it comes to flowers. according to Bibiana Pérez, owner of BB of Flowers, the colors that are most predominant for fall are earth and fire tones. “Lots of beautiful yellow, orange and red flowers in the form of roses, sunflowers, callas, etc.,” she reports. “Come autumn, colors are tilted toward ochres, oranges and browns. Incorporated in the design are dried fruits and vegetables that give it a harmonious and very seasonal feel. We close autumn with Halloween and then enter into our winter season.” So if you can’t make it up north for a fall foliage sightseeing trip, she’s got you covered—and with no ordinary bouquets. “The passion we felt for flowers is what drew us to this business,” says Pérez, who opened the store in July, “with the intention of offering our clients the power to express their emotions and feelings through the beauty and aroma of floral arrangements.” Pro tip: They also do corporate and special events, so put the number in your phone in preparation for the upcoming holidays. “i’m a foodie who loves Latin food, but i am also conscious about my weight and health. For a long time i would alter my own family recipes to make them a little healthier by using brown rice or quinoa instead of white rice and baking instead of frying. eventually i realized that a lot of my friends were doing the same, so i began collecting recipes.”
What’s the best part about working in radio? “i love the immediate access to my listeners. there is something about being live everyday that keeps you on your toes. i also love the comfort that most artists feel doing radio interviews…radio is still where the best interviews happen.”
What do you love about the Miami market? “Miami is definitely my second home. When I was 16, I moved to Margate and attended Coconut Creek High school. there is so much culture in Miami and some of my closest friends live there, so i’m back and forth all the time.”

Automobiles are innately functional creations—getting from Point A to Point B remains their primary purpose—but by virtue of their being, well, physical things, they also have an element of style. And when it comes to style, some err on the side of the practical and emotionless, while others take a more evocative and passionate countenance. The all-new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class coupe models featured here are pure examples of the latter. Available in GLE450 AMG and a mega-powered GLE63 form, the GLE-Class coupes are essentially four-door hatchback versions of the familiar M-Class crossover, which also has been refreshed and rechristened the GLE-Class for 2016. As with most coupes, the GLE-Class coupe is a pure style statement, with a thick, muscular body and arcing roofline replacing the SUV model’s boxy profile. Highlighted—literally— by jewelry-like LED headlamps, the GLE’s coupe’s bold face is

shared with the SUV model, but manages to look completely different when grafted to the coupe’s sculptural fuselage. Sure, it’s harder to fit tall people and cargo in the back than in the SUV model thanks to a lower roof and an extra-high liftover, but as BMW has proven with its X6, a sizable chunk of luxury SUV buyers don’t give a damn about how much stuff you can fit in the back. It’s all about rockin’ a look. Mercedes did, however, make room for plenty of spoils in the GLE Coupe’s lavish interior. These are MercedesBenz automobiles, after all, with all of the attendant cache and sybaritic delights, including a sparkling Harmon/ Kardon audio system and marvelous sport contoured seats. Mercedes redesigned the M-Class’ dashboard and other details as part of the mid-cycle refresh that begat the GLE-Class in the first place, and the results are splendid. Elaborate stitch patterns and lustrous new wood and carbon fiber veneers are part of the GLE’s new suite of available trappings, and the porcelain-and-black “designo” edition is simply gorgeous. A panoramic sunroof and a flat-bottom steering wheel come standard on the GLE63, as does a sprinkling of other sportified interior elements. The GLE-Class coupe comes in two flavors, which can best be summed up as “powerful” (362-hp GLE450 AMG) and “ridiculous” (577-hp GLE63 S). Both trucks are ostensibly performance-oriented, at least by crossover standards. In a straight line, the GLE450 AMG (which is powered by a zesty, 362-hp turbocharged V-6) accelerates with authority and a snappy bark. The GLE 63, however, gets the full, AMG performance treatment, including a monster turbo V-8 motor with 48

577 hp that can blow many a Porsche away during stoplight fights, should you care to pick one with a driver sitting two feet lower than you. For such sizable and tall automobiles, each GLE-Class Coupe can handle its mass heroically well when the pavement gets twisty, but between the high seating position and formidable mass, hurling one around a corner to find their handling limits feels a tad surreal. Gearheads and lead-foot drivers may insist on the flagship GLE63, but for most folks, the GLE450 AMG will be more than sufficient, and with its considerably higher fuel efficiency, you’ll be stopping at the pump far less often. The GLE-Class Coupes are in dealerships now, with prices starting at a tick over $66K for the GLE450 AMG, and $110K for the GLE63 model. Naturally, these prices are a fair bit higher than their SUV counterparts, to further filter out customers who rely on their left brain for making automotive purchases. Indeed, this is the kind of automobile that sells on emotion, not rationality. And when it comes to this and any of the lovely coupes it sells, Mercedes-Benz would have it no other way. 50

Miami-based artist elysa D. Batista is not just about purely visual communication; in fact, a running theme of her works is the constant evolution of language as a form of interpreting the world. that curiosity is at the heart of Batista’s three-dimensional works exploring signs and text as sculptural communicators of coded information, using various materials such as wood, cardboard, foam core, cork or even plexiglass. intrigued? originating at the nevada Museum of art, this exhibition brings together the work of nine aboriginal artists whose works explore complex and innovative modes of abstraction, relating to cultural systems, religious beliefs, and social structures. No Boundaries: Aboriginal Australian Contemporary Abstract Painting originated at the nevada Museum of art in Reno, nevada, and was organized by William Fox, Director, Center for art and environment, and scholar Henry skerritt. the exhibition is drawn from the collection of Debra and Dennis scholl.
EVENT:
Jim Couper: There Are No Other Everglades in the World The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU
WHERE:
SEpTEmbER 12, 2015-NoVEmbER 1, 2015
this exhibition features a new series of paintings by Jim Couper, professor emeritus in the Department of art and art History at FiU and founding director of the art Museum at FiU. His paintings have no people or even any traces of people in them, only nature in its purest form. according to Couper, “it’s the experience of the wild landscape, not a picture of it, that interests me.” the everglades are the artist’s favorite place to paint, so of course he has witnessed their decline over the years and he’s got deep concerns for the preservation of what remains of them. these concerns are the conceptual basis for making this body of work, and the everglades provides an endless source of visual and spiritual inspiration. EVENT: William WHERE:
J. Glackens: A Modernist in the Making NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale
SEpTEmbER 4, 2015-AuguST 31, 2016
according to New York Times art critic Roberta smith’s 2014 review of his exhibition at nsU, “William Glackens is among the most intriguing and underestimated participants in the first wave of 20th-century American modernism. That perception is confirmed by the enlightening and overdue, if still deficient, survey of his dappled canvases and dazzling drawings…it should be required viewing for anyone interested in the period.” in celebration of the 2015 return of works from nsU art Museum’s collection that were part of this traveling exhibition, the museum is mounting a new exhibition to demonstrate the leading and important role the artist and his work played in the formulation and growth of modern art in america. EVENT:
Carlos Estevez: Celestial Traveler The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU
WHERE:
SEpTEmbER 12, 2015-JANuARy 3, 2016
“Celestial traveler” takes its name from one of Carlos estevez’s works of art that is included within the exhibition. The work, an exquisitely ornate kite, serves as a many-layered metaphor for the artist, his work and the exhibition and represents the connection between heaven and earth, the pursuit of dreams and the artist’s own spiritual and physical journey, which has been a source of inquiry throughout estevez’s artistic career. through his work, estevez both examines and interprets how we navigate the concrete and ethereal worlds that surround us. “Celestial traveler” addresses the complex and layered internal, spiritual, familial and public conversations that occur throughout the journey of life, as well as the dynamics that are elemental to them, sharing a personal yet universal, experience about human and spiritual connections. 54

Marc
the Selling more than 12
million records in his 26-year career,
Marc Anthony is one
of the most successful performers in the
world. This month,
he launches a much anticipated world
tour that brings him right into our own backyard.
By Linda Marx
M arc Anthony
may just be the sexiest singer alive.
There are millions of fans out there who would agree. Outfitted in his trademark Gucci suits, the award-winning Latin crooner (né Marco Antonio Muniz) delivers riveting performances to packed houses around the world on a regular basis, driving audience members into a heated frenzy as he whirls, twirls and belts out sultry ballads and jamming salsa tunes with a winning combination of vocal talent and high-energy showmanship. “Marc has star power in every way,” says a Spanish friend of the performer. “He always steals the show. And he is a true Latin gentleman. He especially makes women feel important.” Smiling and self-assured, Anthony, 47, perches at the edge of the stage and shakes hands with audience members. He accepts the cell phone of a female fan to chat with a family member of hers who adores him. He endears himself by being open, charming and friendly while jumping around like a jack rabbit—sometimes barefoot. “God blessed Marc with a voice very few others have, and he is a special person,” his wife Shannon De Lima, a Venezuelan model he married in 2014 in the Dominican Republic, told a friend. On October 3, Anthony will perform for a devoted Miami audience at American Airlines Arena as part of his latest tour, which kicks off this month and has him traveling around the world to entertain his fans.

“What you see is what you get. My God, I don’t have the time nor the energy to live up to some persona.”
—Marc anthony
The son of a music-loving Puerto Rican family who grew up in New York, Anthony, while most famous for his salsa, Latin pop and freestyle oeuvre, is also a respected actor and record and TV producer. To that end, he recently launched Magnus Media, which handles artist management, music publishing, digital content creation, film and TV, a music label, and an entertainment-oriented marketing practice focused on leveraging the power of top Latino content creators in the US and around the world. His influence is staggering, far beyond his well publicized marriages and divorces to 1993 Miss Universe Dayanara Torres (2000-2004) and superstar Jennifer Lopez (2004-2014). “Marc gets women like Jennifer and Dayanara because of his smile, energy and wit,” said a friend of the doting father of five, who has one child with Debbie Rosado, two with Torres and twins with Lopez. He’s sold more than 12 million albums worldwide, with a number of gold and platinum certifications of success from the Recording Industry Association of America. In 2009, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington, DC. He has won 24 Premio Lo Nuestro Latin Music Awards, the most received by any male artist. And he’s been honored by ASCAP with their Founders Award for his exceptional contributions to music worldwide. And then there is his list of Grammy Awards: a 1998 GRAMMY for Best Latin Tropical Performance for “Contra La Corriente” was followed by the 2000 first-ever Latin GRAMMY Song of the Year award for “Dimelo” (I Need To Know)”. Riding the momentum of that hit single, Marc Anthony, his eponymous English language album debut, went 72
inWeston Magazine
triple platinum in the US and helped ignite the Latin pop explosion of 19992000. In 2005, he was awarded double best album Grammys—Best Latin Pop Album for Amar Sin Mentiras and Best Salsa Album for Valio la Pena. In 2010, he released Iconos, which reached platinum status and was number one on the Top Selling and Airplay lists of Billboard magazine for six weeks. Three years later, Anthony returned to the recording studio to work on his first project of original music in the tropical genre. Within hours of its release, “Vivir Mi Vida” jumped to number one on iTunes, Billboard and national radio, staying there for 18 weeks, making it the longest-running number-one salsa tune of all time. The album, called Marc Anthony 3.0, was released in July 2013 and received an American Music Award, a Grammy nomination, five Premios Lo Nuestro awards, ten Billboard Latin Music Awards, three Billboard Awards and a special recognition from the powerhouse Univision TV Network. All that, and Anthony has also been acting since 1996, appearing opposite A-listers like Salma Hayek in Showtime’s The Time of the Butterflies and Denzel Washington and Christopher Walken in Man On Fire. He played Puerto Rican salsa legend Hector Lavoe opposite Lopez in the biopic El Cantante and had a role alongside Jada Pinkett Smith in the TNT series Hawthorne. Then he and Lopez brought the TV series ¡Q’Viva! The Chosen to both Spanish and English TV in the US and Latin America. In 2009, the avid football fan became a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins, because, he says, “I love football and I love Miami, and I couldn’t be happier with this
new affiliation.” When he is here in South Florida, he can be spotted in restaurants like Zuma and The Forge, where he often dines in the private Wine Cellar, taking an espresso on Lincoln Road and shopping at Bal Harbour. Anthony even hosted his 43rd birthday party at the Viceroy and asked all of his friends to stay and party till the wee hours while he left around midnight to rest for his next show. “Marc works very hard and deserves all of his success,” a music industry producer said. “He puts his heart and soul into every song. He is very passionate.” That’s clear in his performances but also in his personal life: Anthony was visibly upset at the demise of his marriage to Lopez, whom he has called “the love of my life”. They first met in 1999, then reunited in 2004 after Lopez split with actor Ben Affleck. During their courtship they spent most of their time in Miami, recording, enjoying his children and falling deeper in love. Today, he has found happiness again with de Lima, and he and Lopez share a solid friendship as they co-parent their twins, Max and Emme. Anthony is also using his love for children and his career success to help others. He has created a foundation called Maestro Cares intended to address the housing, academic and health challenges that orphaned kids face in developing Latin American countries. Last year, the non-profit opened its first orphanage, Niños de Cristo, in La Romana, Dominican Republic. So far it has provided a home for more than 150 orphaned children. His father told him from the earliest days to always work on his personality because it builds character. It’s apparent to all who know him that Anthony heeded his father’s advice.

ANTONIO LYON
Founder & CEO at U-Glove, Inc. In 2008, while vacationing in Spain, Antonio Lyon was feeling hypersensitive about germs, especially since his wife was pregnant. At a gasoline station, he spotted some clear plastic gloves that were intended to protect customers’ hands from the germy pump handles. “I instantly wondered why we don’t have something like this back home,” says Lyon, 29, who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and now lives near Weston. “I came home and did some research and figured out we don’t have them because of the cost.” Upon further investigation, Lyon, who graduated from FIU in 2009 with a degree in political science, did some investigating and learned that gas pumps, among other similar services, are the most contaminated items we touch. “I saw this as a growing health problem, since the American gasoline pump market is mainly self-service,” he says. Lyon, the father of two young children, figured out that hand sanitizers don’t solve the problem, but gloves would give people zero contact with germs and dangerous chemicals. He crunched numbers and asked himself, Who pays for it? Working with his wife, Lily, a marketing professional, Lyon came up with an advertising platform at the pumps that would help defray the cost of the gloves, which he has named U-Glove. then he found a manufacturer and secured a patent pending on the marketing. Last year, his application was submitted and cleared. Now, U-Glove, Inc. based in miramar, supplies clear plastic gloves to nearly 250 gasoline stations around Florida, and in cities like Las Vegas, Houston and Atlanta. by the end of the year, Lyon expects to see U-Glove at 1,000 gasoline stations. He is also approaching other businesses, including hospitals, sports facilities and small businesses. At gas stations, the large gloves are placed in a sleek dispenser that can be attached to any gas pump with a peel-and-stick adhesive and made available to the customer at no charge. Lyon’s marketing plan for clients incorporates “Advertising with purpose.” Lyon is anxious to promote more consumer awareness of ways to protect the public’s health. the glove, he believes, is good for people. And little by little, he sees increases in the advertising side of the concept. the busy entrepreneur is super charged about the growing business and its future. “I feel great about this,” says Lyon. “to have an idea is one thing, but to execute it is another. It has taken four to five years, but it is most satisfying to see the success.”

FELIPE GOMEZ DEL CAMPO As a high school student growing up in Weston, Felipe Gomez del Campo’s grades were lackluster. He was far more interested in jet engines than geometry. “I’m a little off,” laughs the mexico City-born 22-year-old, who is the son of a political scientist mom and engineer dad. “I am a fifth-generation engineer. As a young boy, I played with Dad’s equipment and read books. I got interested in aeronautics when we lived near Kennedy Space Center in melbourne before moving to Weston.”
Today, as he finishes his double major in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Case Western reserve University in Cleveland on full scholarship, his research involves improving the safety and efficiency of jet engines with a plasma-assisted fuel injector. the project started off as a high school science fair; now he has filed a patent and spun off his own company called FGC plasma Solutions. the patent pending GALDI fuel injector uses plasma to increase safety and decrease fuel consumption in a package that

is easily integrated with current jet engine architecture. “We are working to integrate my research into a novel fuel injector concept for jet engines,” he says. “I thought early on this would help in jet engines. I am very excited.” Indeed, his company has raised $130,000 in funding, including a recent grant from the Dept. of energy, which came as a result of placing first in the Midwest Clean energy Challenge. He now has his own lab for testing and research and plans to do whatever it takes to make airplane travel faster,
safer and as efficient as possible. the focused student, who also swims distance freestyle on the men’s Varsity swim team, says, “In two years, I hope to be back in South Florida,” he says. “It will take six years to develop my current project. And I then hope to work in industry propulsion. this is a great time to be doing research. And even if the project fails, I have something important to put on my résumé.”

HELEN FRIED Author, How to Love Your Kids More Than You Hate Your Ex
after suffering a painful divorce, remarrying an attorney, dealing with ex-spouses and raising a blended family, Helen Fried knew she had a lot to share with other men and women. so the 12-year Weston resident wrote a book about her travails, How to Love Your Kids More Than You Hate Your Ex (Hatherleigh Press). the book, published last november, proposes reasonable, effective ways to move forward and rise above the struggles common to such situations. Fried suggests keeping focused on the good things in life—starting with the children. “i was married to my first husband for eight years, so it wasn’t easy to divorce,” says Fried, who was born in new York and raised in Miami. “in 2006, i remarried a man with a different personality from mine, who had two children to add to my son and daughter. so we had a full house. But i worked on making the best out of the situation, not the worst, and wrote a book about it.” Fried, who owned a jewelry business before she became an author, is happy that she had met a diverse group of men and women through her work who had similar divorce stories to share. it was after years of listening and absorbing their problems and targeting her own issues through a monthly support group that she felt a book was due. “i had been keeping a journal and knew there was an interesting story to tell,” she says. “i wrote the book in 2013 and sent it to 30 publishing houses, all of whom turned me down in the eight months i tried to sell it without a literary agent.” then, when she decided to selfpublish, an editor from Hatherleigh Press, a subsidiary of Random House, offered her a contract. the book is now available online and in many book stores and retail outlets. Fried has subsequently written a second book, Good-bye High School, Hello World, which she is currently shopping to publishers. and she still has three of her four grown children living at home. “it can be exhausting,” admits Fried. “even though i have been a stay-at-home mom in recent years, i am always busy.” For recreation, she and her husband like to play golf together and travel, including cruising on casino boats where she can unwind and let loose at the tables. “Raising a blended family is a full-time job,” she says. “i often need a vacation where i don’t have to think!”

It happens to all of us at some point or another: we walk into a room in our home—or through the front door—and think, “Boring!” No matter how much you loved those beige walls when they were first painted, or how little those Formica countertops bothered you when you first moved in, after a while, we all get tired of looking at the same old scenery. But instead of conceding aesthetic defeat because you’re not up for a renovation, think about revitalizing your environment with a few here-and-there updates: a custom piece of furniture with an unexpected finish; new vanities in the bathroom to replace those cookie-cutter versions; totally different paint colors—or even a different texture—on the walls; new cabinets or hardware in the kitchen. The options go on and on, but we asked a few experts in our midst for their suggestions because, after all, they know best. “Whether people are buying or about to buy a home and they don’t like the condition it’s in, they have to determine where to run first,” counsels Elliott Landman, of Kitchen Designs & More, who’s been in

business more than 35 years. “What’s the most pressing project for them? It’s different for every customer, and each customer has to determine how much a job will cost because it’s all over the map. You can go to Home Depot and buy something inexpensive, you can buy middle-of-the-road or you can buy custom.” But whichever of those roads you take, Landman advises, it’s best to use someone who is local to you. “It’s easier that way to communicate,” he elaborates. “If you go to Miami or West Palm Beach because you’re only looking at price, they aren’t always readily available to you.” His tip: Look for quality, a nearby professional with a solid reputation, who can come into the house and get started, whatever the project is. “Find out how many years they have been strictly in that field and make sure they understand it from top to bottom.” He likens contracting someone for a home project to a romantic relationship: “It’s like someone you’re going to be dating, getting engaged to and marrying. The whole relationship could take between a month to six or seven months depending on how intense the project is. People don’t get it. They say, ‘I like this guy.’ That’s just dating; you haven’t been living with him.” “The first question I ask a customer is what’s

eLLiott LanDMan: • Be realistic when viewing websites and images. A lot of what can be done often depends on the house’s architecture and whether or not it has good bones. • An effective change can be as simple as a new paint color or crown molding or changing a door. For example, Landman suggests, “Instead of a solid door, try a door with frame around it and frosted glass and call it a day.” • Lighting makes a big difference. “LED is the hottest thing right now you can retrofit it into existing cans. For $30, you can get a brand new light bulb you’ll never have to change, and with 15-foot ceilings, who wants to change them?” • Don’t be fooled into indulging in fleeting trends. “You may think you want a gray kitchen now, but when you look back at it ten years from now, you’ll kow what year it was,” Landman points out. your favorite style of décor? Is it modern, contemporary, traditional… because all clients are different,” says Humberto Hernandez of Home Smart Décor in Weston. “Next, I talk to them about their color preferences: silver, beige, white, bright colors. Then I start asking other questions, like exactly how much do they want? You don’t have to take everything out to refresh the room. For example, you can put in laminate floors and that will change the look entirely.” Hernandez says he doesn’t go straight to discussing budget because, he finds, “Most people don’t know or have an idea. Some start with ‘I want to do two bathrooms,’ but you have to know if they want average or high-end. We show them options.” But even if those options are sometimes a bit more expensive than they were thinking, Hernandez says, Home Smart makes every effort to give them what they’re looking for without taking the client out of their financial comfort zone. “What we care about most is giving them exactly what they want,” he says.

HUMBERTO HERNANDEZ: • Change not just the wall colors, but the texture, with something like Venetian plaster, which is inexpensive but adds a fresh dimension. • In the kitchen, switch out the hardware or the doors of the cabinets instead of the whole kitchen. • Custom furniture is expensive, so if you want to change the look without commissioning a new piece, one of Home Smart’s carpenters can change the color or surface of a table or the doors on a cabinet. “It’s the easiest and most affordable way to make a change,” he says. • One of the hottest décor trends right now is bathroom vanities. “They are our best sellers because we’re bringing them in directly from a fabricator in Barcelona who makes them of marble and quartz, but the prices are affordable.” Home Smart Décor is located at 1671 Bonaventure Blvd., Weston; visit homesmartdecor.com.

The latest options in prostate cancer treatment. Improvements in the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatments are changing the outlook for men diagnosed with the cancer for the better. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer Barbara Ercole, MD in men, and the second Urologist leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. One in seven men is likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime; most cases are found in men over age 65. Today’s prostate cancer treatments include surgery, radiation and drugs that slow cancer cell growth. The safety and effectiveness of these treatments are steadily improving. “Each treatment has its own benefits and risks, and choosing the right approach can be complicated,” says Barbara Ercole, MD, a urologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston. “Narrowing treatment options depends on several factors, which include the stage of the cancer and patient comorbidities and preferences.” In some cases, no treatment might be the most appropriate first step. Called “active surveillance,” this strategy allows men with earlystage or very slow-growing prostate cancer to avoid treatment and its side effects. The patient’s cancer is regularly monitored so that action can be taken if the cancer grows or spreads. Radiation therapy is a treatment option that kills cancer cells and shrinks tumors. Radiation can be produced from a machine outside the body (external radiation) or by putting materials (often referred to as radiation “seeds”) that produce radiation into the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation or brachytherapy).
The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.
Same-day
One of the most common surgical treatments for prostate cancer is radical prostatectomy, which involves the removal of the entire prostate. This can be done through an incision in the lower abdomen (open approach), or using robotassisted surgery. Robotic prostatectomy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses robotic equipment and allows surgeons to operate through small ports rather than large incisions. “Unlike many cancers, prostate cancer usually allows the patient a significant window of time to consider their options,” says Dr. Ercole. “Make sure you understand all of the information before you and your physician agree on a course of treatment.”
