London Fields Soap Company Launching as an artisan brand in east London, this new company wanted an identity that complimented their handmade, organic and beautiful products. The brand’s ambition is to “bring back the bar”, with soaps that are good for the skin and the environment. For their branding we looked to clean, graphic Art-Deco textile patterns that reflect both a history of craft and a modern sensibility.

“We always want to make our soaps from only the best ingredients. In many instances those ingredients are good enough to eat.” So says founder of the London Fields Soap Company, Tabitha Kleinert.

Approaching us with a vision of a traditional but wholly modern soap product, we worked with her to evolve an identity based around her brand goals. All of London Fields Soap Company’s products are made locally by hand in small batches in Hackney, east London. Ingredients include tea and peppermint, and they also make specialist soaps including a blend for cyclists. Choosing a range of artmoderne-inspired patterns for the labels, and elegant serif fonts also from

the 1920s and ‘30s, we balanced these with bold sans-serif fonts to give the packaging a contemporary feel.

We drew on the visual grammar of craft as a way to define this new brand.

The packaging was also inspired by place. The East End of London has a long tradition of textile design and manufacturing, including Warner & Sons, who were working in the fabric trade in Spitalfields since the early eighteenth-century, and who had a reputation for excellent weaving work of both traditional and modern patterns – through to the twentieth century.

Things We've Never Thought Of: Hanging Whisk Tealight Holders!

For your Friday morning delight: why use a whisk to actually, you know, whisk things when you could suspend one (or three) from the ceiling and light tealights inside instead? This is kind of genius. Faith called it "a fire hazard, but also awesome," while Ariel noted that this "screams Pinterest because it looks like a fun/easy DIY, but it also might end it total disaster" — true on both accounts! But still, props to whoever thought this up. We deem it amazing. What do you think? Would you ever try your hand at hanging whisk tealight holders? http://www.thekitchn.com/ t h i n g s - we ve - n e ve r - t h o u g ht - o f hanging-whisk-tealight-holders201816?utm_source=RSS&utm_ medium=feed&utm_campaign=Fe ed%3A+apartmenttherapy%2Fthe kitchn+%28TK+Channel%3A+Ma in%29

Very Unique Staircase That Will Inspire You In most people’s homes a staircase is just a functional means of travelling from one floor to another. Usually there is nothing very remarkable

about a staircase, though some are more attractive than others. It used to be that you had a choice. Closed or open sides, and natural or painted wood. Some might have more ornate spindles and balusters, while others would just have paneling underneath the handrail.

Duncan Meerding expands his cracked log lamp range I first came across Duncan Meerding, a 27 year old Designer, early in 2013 with his beautiful and ingenious Cracked Log Lamp. I then met him at Decoration and Design and fell even more in love with his work. At DesignEx this year, he showed me his new range with the hanging log pendant lamps which

are just beautiful! In April this year he launched a range of products at his first solo show since early 2010. The show entitled ‘From the Side’ was taken from the location, but also the influence light from the side can have on our mood when we walk into a room. As well as these two reasons, the exhibition lent its name to Dun-

can’s visual fields which are concentrated around the side. This vision of light emanating from the peripheries and the highly tactile nature of Duncan’s work, highlights the alternative sensory world in which he designs – being legally blind. The exhibition launched the range of new Designs in the Cracked Log Light Range.

One of the new larger iterations in the series is called ‘Stump’ and there are two new variations in the range. The Stump W which is ready to wire indoor or outside to 12volt power, and the Stump B which is battery powered. Developing on the original Cracked Log Lamp, Duncan has almost doubled the size of the Stump designs (making them 400 mm high and 300 mm wide approximately) and made them possible to weight bear as a table or stool. The development of these 3 new Designs in the Cracked Log Light series showcases the continued interest that there is in these unique objects. When you see them in the flesh they are even more beautiful. The Designs are influenced by what is often associated with waste wood and embraces the cracks, making them a feature in “This design showcases how Design and sustainability can add to each other. The more energy efficient light source used in this design results in adding not taking away from the overall design. The process of design with consideration for the environment and longevity in design I believe should happen at the beginning of the design process not get tacked on at the end as an afterthought”, Duncan explains. the Design. The warm yellow light emanating from the cracks highlights the alternative fiery fate much of the salvaged wood would have met were they not rescued by Duncan. Duncan was recognised for his contin-

ued interest in sustainability earlier this year, receiving the Green Award for Best Sustainable Design at ‘The Edge’ 2014. A fabulous achievement, the prototype of the stump lamp won the Award, not just for its re use of

salvaged materials, but also the low energy consuming LED light source. This source adds to the designs over all aesthetic, pushing multiple shards of light from each LED through the different fissures in the Stump.

Awesome Products: Cloud concrete toilet roll holder The minute I saw this design, I was mesmerized. Yes… over a concrete toilet roll holder. The Cloud is a wall mounted storage shelf that has cumulus cloud-shaped scallops that perfectly fit toilet paper rolls. Consumable bathroom supplies normally taking up space in storage can now be displayed with this design.

Part of a series of concrete products by Frenchmen Bertrand Jayr and Lyon Béton, this functional sculpture turns an extremely ordinary and let’s face it, rather ugly, product into something that is beautiful… and it can hold many, many rolls!
