This photograph was taken on Eurostar from London to Paris. It was my starting point to explore the relationship among light, shadow, colour and movement. Experimenting with these four elements I discovered that images are changing in accordance with the time of the day. Light becomes stronger or fades away; the shadows follow like playing a game and the colours mix like in an artist’s pallet. Movement accelerates the effects, providing with more unexpected situations. I designed this wallpaper collection using the photographs for my experimentations in different locations and time during the day. John Pavlakis is a multi-disciplinary designer and teacher, painter and photographer based in London but working also in Athens. With a BA (HON) degree in Spatial design from Central Saint Martins in London and a degree from Greenwich University in teaching Design, John now works across a variety of disciplines, from teaching to design, photography and painting. He has worked in Architectural practices as a Spatial designer; as a tutor in Central Saint Martin’s Foundation Course and across London schools in secondary education. He has designed bespoke lightings commissioned by private clients. This is John’s first collection of wallpapers. His designs, an exploration of light, shadow, movement and colour are expressed on wallpaper, a medium that has spatial applications and influences the way we conceive space.

Depending on the wall size and the positioning of the wallpaper, different variations of the final outcome could be achieved. Design can be customized for specific client requirements.
METAL
Most of the major railway stations in London celebrate the metal constructions from the Industrial revolution. At night the contemporary lights and the shadows from the metal ornaments create an interesting game that fascinates the imagination. PROPOSAL #1 PROPOSAL #2

The lights are like little explosions. At dawn, the natural light mixes with the public lighting on the streets and the shadows from the surrounding area mirrored against the shinny surfaces, creating patterns and forms. The colours created depending upon the surfaces, the light hues, the signs and advertising panels. The movement elongates the shapes. The patterns enriched when overlap with each other.

During the night, the lights and shadows from the objects and the buildings in the surrounding area are mirrored against the shinny surfaces, creating patterns and forms. The movement elongates the shapes, thus making them look like thin stretched lighting stripes.

Driving at night, in a vehicle , speed has the leading role. At night, lights from cars, signs and advertising panels, seems like ranging flames. The dark is like an empty black canvas, coloured lights mixed and applied like strokes of brush. The speed elongates the lights creating flame like shapes.

The shadows from human figures in enclosed spaces are usually distorted and overlap with the shadows from objects. At night, the colours cease to have the leading role. The shadows now are the masters of the interior space creating patterns and forms. The light attacks the mass of every object and its shadow strongly reflects on the adjacent surfaces, round or flat. The movement elongates the shapes. The patterns enriched when overlap with each other.
